The main objective of the study was to prepare and then subject to thorough analysis photosensitive materials to determine their usability as materials for the production of special polymer optical fibers. A comparison of the physicochemical properties of compositions containing commercially available fluorescein with compositions doped with 2.7-dihydroxy naphthalene with epichlorohydrin (2.7-NAF.EP) was made. The degree of copolymer conversion, which is one of the most important parameters confirming the effectiveness of the curing method, was calculated based on ATR-FT-IR spectra. Additionally, in order to check the processing capabilities of the obtained compositions, a thorough thermal and spectroscopic analysis was performed (the best method used for this purpose is the coupled analysis technique (TG-DSC-MS)). The obtained results indicate that the photoluminescent properties of the dopants used were not suppressed after their introduction into the matrix. Thermal and spectroscopic analysis allowed us to determine the polymerization conditions in which the physicochemical properties of the obtained materials are the best from the optical fiber-technology point of view.

The state of positive health and wellbeing is impossible without safe water. This study was aimed to assess the quality of Dilla town water sources. A total of 108 water samples were collected from twelve sites and selected physical and chemical parameters were analyzed. Most of the physicochemical parameters were in the acceptable range for water quality of WHO and CES. Three sampling sites were contaminated by nitrate with concentration range 51.68–126.30 mg/L. The heavy metal analysis indicated that the levels of iron, zinc, manganese, and chromium in some of the sites exceed values of WHO standard concentrations in the range 0.506–5.773, 3.606–4.312, 0.194–0.588 and 0.053–0.098 mg/L respectively. While three heavy metals (mercury, arsenic and lead) were above the WHO limit in all the sites. The bacteriological analysis of all the water sources indicated microbial contamination, total count of the coliforms ranging from 3 to 80 MPN/100 mL. As per WHO criteria, some of the water sources were grouped in to high-risk. The cause of such contamination may be due to no treatment or poor processing system. Therefore, the need to Hygiene promotion programs, urgent and continuous monitoring is highly recommended. HIGHLIGHTS Electrical conductivity in four sites and temperature in five sites were beyond the WHO guideline.; Highest nitrate level was determined in the water samples from untreated hand dug wells.; The level of arsenic, mercury, and lead in all the sites were above the WHO and CES limit for drinking water.; Microbial contamination was detected in all the water samples.;

Observations in crystal growth and assembly from recent in situ methods suggest alternative, non-classical crystallization pathways play an important role in the determination of the micro- and meso- structures in crystalline systems. These processes display parallels that cross-cut multiple disciplines investigating crystallization across four orders of magnitude in size scales and widely differing environments, hinting that alternative crystal growth pathways may be a fundamental scheme in natural crystal formation. Using a system of short-range attractive microbeads, we demonstrate that the addition of a small concentration of sub-species incommensurate with the lattice spacing of the dominant species results in a stark change in crystal size and morphology. These changes are attributed to the presence of fleeting, amorphous-like configurations of beads that ultimately change the melting and growth dynamics in preferred directions. From these real-time observations, we hypothesize the amorphous mineral precursors present in biological mineralized tissues undergo similar non-classical crystallization processes resulting in the complex structures found in biomineralization.

Polymer materials find many applications in various industries. Efforts are being made to obtain structures with increasingly better properties. It is necessary not only to obtain new materials but also to modify existing structures. Such is the situation with polymer optical fibers. The widespread use of polymer optical fibers is impossible, due to their very high optical losses compared to glass optical fibers. The solution to this problem can be the manufacturing of polymer active optical fibers. Active fibers are the basic components of fiber optic amplifiers and lasers that allow the direct amplification of light inside the fiber. In order for their operation to be the most effective, it is necessary to use dopants. The most commonly used are lanthanide ions isolated from the polymer network, active organic dyes, and quantum dots. These dopants are characterized by very high luminescence and long glow times. Quantum dots of CdSe are made using two organic solvents that differ in boiling points—hexane (a low-boiling solvent with a boiling point of 69 °C) and 1-octadecene (a high-boiling solvent with a boiling point of 315 °C). This work aims to test whether the type of solvent used to obtain quantum dots affects the doping capabilities of polymer structures, from which optical fibers can then be drawn.

We report a detailed study of vector modulation instability (VMI) in highly birefringent fibers with circularly polarized modes in the normal dispersion regime. We show that because of suppression of coherent terms, the VMI in circularly birefringent fibers is governed by one set of coupled-mode nonlinear Schrödinger equations regardless of the fiber birefringence. In consequence, the VMI sidebands are polarized linearly and orthogonally to the pump up to the birefringence level of 10-5, similarly like in isotropic fibers. For greater birefringence the polarization states of the sidebands become elliptical with opposite handedness while the azimuth angle deviates from orthogonality to the pump. We also point on the dependence of the critical power beyond which the VMI cannot exist upon ellipticity angle θ of the eigenmodes. We show that the critical power gradually increases with the ellipticity angle and for θ > 17.6° the VMI gain is not limited, in contrast to linearly birefringent fibers. Our findings were confirmed experimentally by observation of the isotropic-like VMI in the spun side-hole fiber with nearly circularly polarized eigenmodes, in spite of relatively high birefringence of the order of 2 × 10-6.

Our study investigated the partially degenerate intermodal four-wave mixing (IM-FWM) process in nonlinear multimode optical fibers with strain-induced birefringence. The difference in the refractive index along the two orthogonal directions was due to the photoelastic effect that occurred when the fiber under test (FUT) was subjected to uniformly applied diameter stress caused by winding on a cylinder of a given diameter. Our work analyzed how the nonlinear frequency conversion and the output modal field profiles depended on the degree of birefringence in FUT. The experimental results significantly affected the order of the excited moduli in fiber sections characterized by different amounts of birefringence. We also checked the efficiency of the FWM process for different polarizations of the pump beam to determine those for which the FWM process was most effective for the 532 nm sub-nanosecond pulses. More than 30% conversion efficiency was obtained for the FUTs with a length of tens of centimeters.

We demonstrate a partially degenerated intermodal four-wave mixing (FWM) process realized in a few-mode nonlinear optical fiber, leading to the effective generation of visible red and blue light from 532 nm sub-nanosecond pulses. We present a self-seeded FWM configuration with a signal beam obtained in the additional section of the same type of fiber that ensures perfect matching between the seed and the Stokes beams. Over 40% of the wavelength conversion efficiency in the FWM process was obtained using a fiber length shorter than 1 m.

In this paper, the application of a fiber Bragg grating written in a highly birefringent side-hole elliptical core optical fiber for two-axial strain measurement is presented. Hybrid optical fiber structures achieved by combining large side-holes and elliptical core result in a very high birefringence of 1 × 10−3 and thus high initial Bragg peak spectral separation of 1.16 nm, as well as a very high transverse force sensitivity, of up to 650 pm/(N/mm) or even −1150 pm/(N/mm), depending on the fiber orientation with respect to the applied force. Due to the ~22 %m/m GeO2 concentration in the core the fiber being highly photosensitive, which significantly simplifies FBG fabrication by UV illumination without the need for prior hydrogen loading, which worsens thermal stability. Finally, the developed FBGs written in the highly birefringent side-hole elliptical core optical fiber were embedded in the square composite plates and applied for strain measurements. Tests of two-directional four-point bending have shown usability of such FBG for two-axial in-plane strain measurement with a single FBG in iso-thermal conditions.

We report on experimental studies of polarimetric sensitivity to torsion in spun highly birefringent fibers. Two classes of spun fibers were examined, namely spun side-hole fibers and birefringent microstructured fibers with different birefringence dispersion, spin pitches, and spin directions. The polarimetric sensitivity to torsion was determined by monitoring a displacement of the spectral interference fringes arising in the output signal because of interference of polarization modes and induced by an additional fiber twist. Both the experimental results and the analytical predictions showed that the sensitivity to torsion normalized to the fringe width in the spun highly birefringent fibers increased asymptotically with the twist rate to the value of 1/ π rad−1. We have also studied the polarimetric response to temperature in the spun side-hole fibers. We have found that, in contrast to the torsional sensitivity, the temperature sensitivity decays asymptotically to zero with increasing fiber twist rate. Therefore, the spun fibers with short spin pitches are especially well suited for torsion measurements because the torsional sensitivity and the range of linear response are both enhanced in such fibers, while at the same time, the cross-sensitivity to temperature is reduced.

We performed an experimental analysis of the effect of phase mask alignment on the Bragg grating reflection spectra around the wavelength of λB = 1560 nm fabricated in polymer optical fiber by using a multiple order phase mask. We monitored the evolution of the reflection spectra for different values of the angle ϕ by describing the tilt between the phase mask and the fiber. We observed that the peak at λB is split into five separate peaks for the nonzero tilt and that separation of the peaks increases linearly with ϕ. Through comparison with theoretical data we were able to identify the five peaks as products of different grating periodicities, which are associated with the interference of different pairs of diffraction orders on the phase mask.

We experimentally characterized a birefringent side-hole microstructured fiber in the visible wavelength region. The spectral dependence of the group and phase modal birefringence was measured using the methods of spectral interferometry. The phase modal birefringence of the investigated fiber increases with wavelength, but its positive sign is opposite to the sign of the group modal birefringence. We also measured the sensing characteristics of the fiber using a method of tandem spectral interferometry. Spectral interferograms corresponding to different values of a physical parameter were processed to retrieve the spectral phase functions and to determine the spectral dependence of polarimetric sensitivity to strain, temperature and hydrostatic pressure. A negative sign of the polarimetric sensitivity was deduced from the simulation results utilizing the known modal birefringence dispersion of the fiber. Our experimental results show that the investigated fiber has a very high polarimetric sensitivity to hydrostatic pressure, reaching –200 rad x MPa–1 x m–1 at 750 nm.

The strain sensitivity of a two-mode birefringent side-hole fiber is measured in the spectral domain. In a simple experimental setup comprising a broadband source, a polarizer, a two-mode birefringent side-hole fiber under varied elongations, an analyzer and a compact spectrometer, the spectral interferograms are resolved. These are characterized by the equalization wavelength at which spectral interference fringes have the highest visibility (the largest period) due to the zero group optical path difference between the fundamental, the LP01 mode and the higher-order, the LP11 mode. The spectral interferograms with the equalization wavelength are processed to retrieve the phase as a function of the wavelength. From the retrieved phase functions corresponding to different elongations of a two-mode birefringent side-hole fiber under test, the spectral strain sensitivity is obtained. Using this approach, the intermodal spectral strain sensitivity was measured for both x and y polarizations. Moreover, the spectral polarimetric sensitivity to strain was measured for the fundamental mode when a birefringent delay line was used in tandem with the fiber. Its spectral dependence was also compared with that obtained from a shift of the spectral interferograms not including the equalization wavelength, and good agreement was confirmed.

Fiber Bragg gratings written in highly birefringent microstructured optical fiber with a dedicated design are embedded in a composite fiber-reinforced polymer. The Bragg peak wavelength shifts are measured under controlled axial and transversal strain and during thermal cycling of the composite sample. We obtain a sensitivity to transversal strain that exceeds values reported earlier in literature by one order of magnitude. Our results evidence the relevance of using microstructured optical fibers for structural integrity monitoring of composite material structures.

In this paper we present an all-fiber interferometric sensor for the simultaneous measurement of strain and temperature. It is composed of a specially fabricated twin-core fiber spliced between two pieces of a single-mode fiber. Due to the refractive index difference between the two cores in a twin-core fiber, a differential interference pattern is produced at the sensor output. The phase response of the interferometer to strain and temperature is measured in the 850–1250 nm spectral range, showing zero sensitivity to strain at 1000 nm. Due to the significant difference in sensitivities to both parameters, our interferometer is suitable for two-parameter sensing. The simultaneous response of the interferometer to strain and temperature was studied using the two-wavelength interrogation method and a novel approach based on the spectral fitting of the differential phase response. As the latter technique uses all the gathered spectral information, it is more reliable and yields the results with better accuracy.

In this work, an alternative method of coupling light into microstructured polymer fibers is presented. The solution consists in using a fiber taper fabricated with a CO2 laser. The connection is formed by inserting a tapered silica tip into the holes of a microstructured polymer fiber. This alternative method is duly characterized and the feasibility of such fiber connection to enable the polymer fiber as a displacement sensor is also demonstrated.

We present a comprehensive study of an in-line Mach-Zehnder intermodal interferometer fabricated in a boron-doped two-mode highly birefringent microstructured fiber. We observed different interference signals at the output of the interferometer, related to the intermodal interference of the fundamental and the first order modes of the orthogonal polarizations and a beating of the polarimetric signal related to the difference in the group modal birefringence between the fundamental and the first order modes, respectively. The proposed interferometer was tested for measurements of hydrostatic pressure and temperature for different alignments of the input polarizer with no analyzer at the output. The sensitivities to hydrostatic pressure of the intermodal interference signals for x- and y-polarizations had an opposite sign and were equal to 0.229 nm/MPa and −0.179 nm/MPa, respectively, while the temperature sensitivities for both polarizations were similar and equal 0.020 nm/°C and 0.019 nm/°C. In the case of pressure, for the simultaneous excitation of both polarization modes, we observed a displacement of intermodal fringes with a sensitivity depending on the azimuth of the input polarization state, as well as on the displacement of their envelope with a sensitivity of 2.14 nm/MPa, accompanied by a change in the fringes visibility. Such properties of the proposed interferometer allow for convenient adjustments to the pressure sensitivity of the intermodal fringes and possible applications for the simultaneous interrogation of temperature and pressure.

In this work, fibre Bragg gratings (FBGs) were inscribed in two different undoped poly- (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) polymer optical fibres (POFs) using different types of UV lasers and their inscription times, temperature and strain sensitivities are investigated. The POF Bragg gratings (POFBGs) were inscribed using two UV lasers: a continuous UV HeCd @325 nm laser and a pulsed UV KrF @248 nm laser. Two PMMA POFs are used in which the primary and secondary preforms (during the two-step drawing process) have a different thermal treatment. The PMMA POFs drawn in which the primary or secondary preform is not specifically pre-treated need longer inscription time than the fibres drawn where both preforms have been pre-annealed at 80 °C for 2 weeks. Using both UV lasers, for the latter fibre much less inscription time is needed compared to another homemade POF. The properties of a POF fabricated with both preforms thermally well annealed are different from those in which just one preform step process is thermally treated, with the first POFs being much less sensitive to thermal treatment. The influence of annealing on the strain and temperature sensitivities of the fibres prior to FBG inscription is also discussed, where it is observed that the fibre produced from a two-step drawing process with well-defined pre-annealing of both preforms did not produce any significant difference in sensitivity. The results indicate the impact of preform thermal pre-treatment before the PMMA POFs drawing, which can be an essential characteristic in the view of developing POF sensors technology.
