1. Combating Missing Modalities in Egocentric Videos at Test Time

Abstract: Understanding videos that contain multiple modalities is crucial, especially in egocentric videos, where combining various sensory inputs significantly improves tasks like action recognition and moment localization. However, real-world applications often face challenges with incomplete modalities due to privacy concerns, efficiency needs, or hardware issues. Current methods, while effective, often necessitate retraining the model entirely to handle missing modalities, making them computationally intensive, particularly with large training datasets. In this study, we propose a novel approach to address this issue at test time without requiring retraining. We frame the problem as a test-time adaptation task, where the model adjusts to the available unlabeled data at test time. Our method, MiDl~(Mutual information with self-Distillation), encourages the model to be insensitive to the specific modality source present during testing by minimizing the mutual information between the prediction and the available modality. Additionally, we incorporate self-distillation to maintain the model's original performance when both modalities are available. MiDl represents the first self-supervised, online solution for handling missing modalities exclusively at test time. Through experiments with various pretrained models and datasets, MiDl demonstrates substantial performance improvement without the need for retraining.

Abstract: In this report, we introduce the Gemini 1.5 family of models, representing the next generation of highly compute-efficient multimodal models capable of recalling and reasoning over fine-grained information from millions of tokens of context, including multiple long documents and hours of video and audio. The family includes two new models: (1) an updated Gemini 1.5 Pro, which exceeds the February version on the great majority of capabilities and benchmarks; (2) Gemini 1.5 Flash, a more lightweight variant designed for efficiency with minimal regression in quality. Gemini 1.5 models achieve near-perfect recall on long-context retrieval tasks across modalities, improve the state-of-the-art in long-document QA, long-video QA and long-context ASR, and match or surpass Gemini 1.0 Ultra's state-of-the-art performance across a broad set of benchmarks. Studying the limits of Gemini 1.5's long-context ability, we find continued improvement in next-token prediction and near-perfect retrieval (>99%) up to at least 10M tokens, a generational leap over existing models such as Claude 3.0 (200k) and GPT-4 Turbo (128k). Finally, we highlight real-world use cases, such as Gemini 1.5 collaborating with professionals on completing their tasks achieving 26 to 75% time savings across 10 different job categories, as well as surprising new capabilities of large language models at the frontier; when given a grammar manual for Kalamang, a language with fewer than 200 speakers worldwide, the model learns to translate English to Kalamang at a similar level to a person who learned from the same content.

4. Exploring Missing Modality in Multimodal Egocentric Datasets

Abstract: Multimodal video understanding is crucial for analyzing egocentric videos, where integrating multiple sensory signals significantly enhances action recognition and moment localization. However, practical applications often grapple with incomplete modalities due to factors like privacy concerns, efficiency demands, or hardware malfunctions. Addressing this, our study delves into the impact of missing modalities on egocentric action recognition, particularly within transformer-based models. We introduce a novel concept -Missing Modality Token (MMT)-to maintain performance even when modalities are absent, a strategy that proves effective in the Ego4D, Epic-Kitchens, and Epic-Sounds datasets. Our method mitigates the performance loss, reducing it from its original $\sim 30\%$ drop to only $\sim 10\%$ when half of the test set is modal-incomplete. Through extensive experimentation, we demonstrate the adaptability of MMT to different training scenarios and its superiority in handling missing modalities compared to current methods. Our research contributes a comprehensive analysis and an innovative approach, opening avenues for more resilient multimodal systems in real-world settings.

Abstract: This report introduces a new family of multimodal models, Gemini, that exhibit remarkable capabilities across image, audio, video, and text understanding. The Gemini family consists of Ultra, Pro, and Nano sizes, suitable for applications ranging from complex reasoning tasks to on-device memory-constrained use-cases. Evaluation on a broad range of benchmarks shows that our most-capable Gemini Ultra model advances the state of the art in 30 of 32 of these benchmarks - notably being the first model to achieve human-expert performance on the well-studied exam benchmark MMLU, and improving the state of the art in every one of the 20 multimodal benchmarks we examined. We believe that the new capabilities of the Gemini family in cross-modal reasoning and language understanding will enable a wide variety of use cases. We discuss our approach toward post-training and deploying Gemini models responsibly to users through services including Gemini, Gemini Advanced, Google AI Studio, and Cloud Vertex AI.

Abstract: We present Ego-Exo4D, a diverse, large-scale multimodal multiview video dataset and benchmark challenge. Ego-Exo4D centers around simultaneously-captured egocentric and exocentric video of skilled human activities (e.g., sports, music, dance, bike repair). 740 participants from 13 cities worldwide performed these activities in 123 different natural scene contexts, yielding long-form captures from 1 to 42 minutes each and 1,286 hours of video combined. The multimodal nature of the dataset is unprecedented: the video is accompanied by multichannel audio, eye gaze, 3D point clouds, camera poses, IMU, and multiple paired language descriptions -- including a novel "expert commentary" done by coaches and teachers and tailored to the skilled-activity domain. To push the frontier of first-person video understanding of skilled human activity, we also present a suite of benchmark tasks and their annotations, including fine-grained activity understanding, proficiency estimation, cross-view translation, and 3D hand/body pose. 7. Just a Glimpse: Rethinking Temporal Information for Video Continual Learning

Abstract: Class-incremental learning is one of the most important settings for the study of Continual Learning, as it closely resembles real-world application scenarios. With constrained memory sizes, catastrophic forgetting arises as the number of classes/tasks increases. Studying continual learning in the video domain poses even more challenges, as video data contains a large number of frames, which places a higher burden on the replay memory. The current common practice is to sub-sample frames from the video stream and store them in the replay memory. In this paper, we propose SMILE a novel replay mechanism for effective video continual learning based on individual/single frames. Through extensive experimentation, we show that under extreme memory constraints, video diversity plays a more significant role than temporal information. Therefore, our method focuses on learning from a small number of frames that represent a large number of unique videos. 8. Evaluation of Test-Time Adaptation Under Computational Time Constraints

Abstract: This paper proposes a novel online evaluation protocol for Test Time Adaptation (TTA) methods, which penalizes slower methods by providing them with fewer samples for adaptation. TTA methods leverage unlabeled data at test time to adapt to distribution shifts. Although many effective methods have been proposed, their impressive performance usually comes at the cost of significantly increased computation budgets. Current evaluation protocols overlook the effect of this extra computation cost, affecting their real-world applicability. To address this issue, we propose a more realistic evaluation protocol for TTA methods, where data is received in an online fashion from a constant-speed data stream, thereby accounting for the method's adaptation speed. We apply our proposed protocol to benchmark several TTA methods on multiple datasets and scenarios. Extensive experiments show that, when accounting for inference speed, simple and fast approaches can outperform more sophisticated but slower methods. For example, SHOT from 2020, outperforms the state-of-the-art method SAR from 2023 in this setting. These combined properties make porous materials a powerful solution for addressing the efficiency limitations that have traditionally restricted nanogenerators. Recognizing these benefits, this review focuses on the essential role that porous materials play in advancing PENG and TENG technologies. It examines a wide range of porous materials, including aerogels, nano‐porous films, sponges, and 2D materials, explaining how their unique structures contribute to higher energy harvesting efficiency. The review also explores recent breakthroughs in the development of these materials, demonstrating how they overcome performance challenges and open up new possibilities for practical applications. These advancements position porous nanogenerators as strong candidates for use in wearable electronics, smart textiles, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Abstract: The purpose of this research is to evaluate the development problem of the emotional intelligence of future social educators in line with the views of future social educators. This research was designed in accordance with the qualitative research method. The study group of the research consisted of 40 pre-service teachers studying in the department of social studies teaching at a university in Almaty, Kazakhstan, in the 2021-2022 academic year. Research data were collected with a semi-structured interview form developed by the researchers. As a result of the research, it has been determined that the majority of teacher candidates have a medium level of emotional intelligence. The majority of teacher candidates show behaviours that show high emotional intelligence. They expressed it as knowing which emotions and why, understanding the emotions of the people around them, empathising with the people around them, being able to control their own emotions and expressing their own emotions only when they want. The pre-service teachers who participated in the research evaluated the barriers to the development of emotional intelligence in three categories: family barriers, personal barriers and environmental barriers. In line with the results of the research, the necessity of organising seminars that can be guided by emphasising the importance of emotional intelligence for future social educators has emerged.

Abstract: Contemporary post/decolonial discourses in Kazakhstan have completely excluded the following issue from the field of narrative: the question of critically reevaluating the pre-colonial cultural structure. These discourses consider current issues mostly as a result of colonialism and overemphasize external factors. It is important to read and decipher the symbols of the cultural structure to understand the origins of authoritarianism and other socio-political problems. This article aims to investigate the origins of notions of the human being and its existence in the postcolonial Kazakh culture through comparing it to its pre-colonial cultural context. I will be working with Abai’s Words of Edification, which is a collection of texts written in prose in the form of a free philosophical meditation, and it is an apt source for the investigation of the origin of the notion of human existence. The politicization of Abai’s figure starting from the Soviet period and continuing in the postcolonial era obscures the initial questions in the text, and several lines from the Words of Edification engendered the utmost controversy and overshadowed the rest of the text. The aim of this article is to demythologize the poet’s image and focus on symbols hitherto unread.

We utilize special functions and Harrow-Hassidim-Lloyd (HHL) quantum algorithm for finding temperature and arc flux functions exactly and approximately for the Stefan type problems. The Stefan type problems we are considering are based on the Generalized Heat Equation with free boundaries. As examples we consider exact and approximate solutions of inverse one-phase and two-phase Stefan problems. An Inverse Generalized One-Phase Stefan Problem is considered as a model problem. Computational experiments were conducted and demonstrated on IBM Quantum Machine.

18. SegTAD: Precise Temporal Action Detection via Semantic Segmentation

Abstract: Temporal action detection (TAD) is an important yet challenging task in video analysis. Most existing works draw inspiration from image object detection and tend to reformulate it as a proposal generation - classification problem. However, there are two caveats with this paradigm. First, proposals are not equipped with annotated labels, which have to be empirically compiled, thus the information in the annotations is not necessarily precisely employed in the model training process. Second, there are large variations in the temporal scale of actions, and neglecting this fact may lead to deficient representation in the video features. To address these issues and precisely model temporal action detection, we formulate the task of temporal action detection in a novel perspective of semantic segmentation. Owing to the 1-dimensional property of TAD, we are able to convert the coarse-grained detection annotations to fine-grained semantic segmentation annotations for free. We take advantage of them to provide precise supervision so as to mitigate the impact induced by the imprecise proposal labels. We propose an end-to-end framework SegTAD composed of a 1D semantic segmentation network (1D-SSN) and a proposal detection network (PDN).

Abstract: Egocentric videos capture sequences of human activities from a first-person perspective and can provide rich multimodal signals. However, most current localization methods use third-person videos and only incorporate visual information. In this work, we take a deep look into the effectiveness of audiovisual context in detecting actions in egocentric videos and introduce a simple-yet-effective approach via Observing, Watching, and Listening (OWL). OWL leverages audiovisual information and context for egocentric temporal action localization (TAL). We validate our approach in two large-scale datasets, EPIC-Kitchens, and HOMAGE. Extensive experiments demonstrate the relevance of the audiovisual temporal context. Namely, we boost the localization performance (mAP) over visual-only models by +2.23% and +3.35% in the above datasets.

Abstract: We introduce Ego4D, a massive-scale egocentric video dataset and benchmark suite. It offers 3,670 hours of daily-life activity video spanning hundreds of scenarios (household, outdoor, workplace, leisure, etc.) captured by 931 unique camera wearers from 74 worldwide locations and 9 different countries. The approach to collection is designed to uphold rigorous privacy and ethics standards with consenting participants and robust de-identification procedures where relevant. Ego4D dramatically expands the volume of diverse egocentric video footage publicly available to the research community. Portions of the video are accompanied by audio, 3D meshes of the environment, eye gaze, stereo, and/or synchronized videos from multiple egocentric cameras at the same event. Furthermore, we present a host of new benchmark challenges centered around understanding the first-person visual experience in the past (querying an episodic memory), present (analyzing hand-object manipulation, audio-visual conversation, and social interactions), and future (forecasting activities). A comprehensive overview of WPT/SWIPT-enabled WBANs was provided by characterizing them regarding the system requirements, network architecture, device design, and channel modeling. Considering the system requirements, optimization and performance analysis are identified as major tools to enhance and quantify the system's efficiency. Given the power scarcity issue, it is also imperative to ensure robust, user-friendly, and long-term WBAN operation; accordingly, existing battery-assisted and battery-free device designs are discussed. Furthermore, different network topologies, varying from single-input-single-output to multiple-input-multiple-output, are required to maintain WBAN applications. Therefore, this survey includes the network architecture as an important classification category requiring close attention. Additionally, understanding propagation models is indispensable to building competent WBAN. This review describes channel modeling from the perspective of stochastic and deterministic environments. In summary, this paper aims to serve as a comprehensive reference, providing readers with an insightful exploration of WPT/SWIPT-enabled WBANs, addressing their both advantages and limitations.

Abstract: The object of the study is the Dalnezapadny quarry of Zhairemsky Mining and Processing Plant JSC. During the research work, an analysis of the physical and mechanical properties of rocks was carried out for further geomechanical assessment of the massif and ensuring the safety of mining operations. Based on numerical modeling using the limit equilibrium method, an analysis of the stability of the sides of the Dalnezapadny quarry was carried out. During the analysis, the program calculated stability safety factors (SF - stability factor) and constructed critical sliding surfaces (collapse prism) using the Bishop method. According to the results of the numerical analysis, it is clear that the adjacent rock mass of the eastern part of the quarry is in an unstable state (SF<1.2), while the western side of the quarry is generally stable (SF>1.2). The eastern side of the Dalnezapadny quarry was designed with a steeper general angle than the western side, which led to a loss of stability of the near-side rock mass according to the results of numerical analysis using the finite element method. 41. A Comparison of Human Rights Education in Social Studies Textbooks in Turkey and the United States

Abstract: The aim of this study was to compare the level of allocation of human rights education issues in social studies textbooks in Turkey and the United States. For this aim, six social studies textbooks from both countries were examined. Textbooks were analyzed in terms of their level of "human rights education issues," in accordance with Karaman-Kepenekci's (1999) subcategories. A content analysis method was used to analyze the textbooks. As a result, it was observed that human rights education issues were included more in Turkish social studies textbooks. The study showed that Turkish and United States textbooks contained the "rights" subcategory the most. While the intensity scores of the "democracy," "freedom," and "judgment" subcategories were listed the highest in both countries' textbooks, on the other hand, the intensity scores of the "tolerance" and "peace" subcategories were placed last in the textbooks of both countries. 47. The Half-Space Sommerfeld Problem of a Horizontal Dipole for Magnetic Media.

Abstract: A Hertz radiator's Sommerfeld boundary value problem is considered for the case when its electric moment is directed horizontally relative to the plane interface between two media with different values of magnetic permeability. An integral representation of the exact expression for the Hertz potential, which generalizes the classical solution for non-magnetic media, both in cylindrical and spherical coordinate systems, is obtained. The corresponding expressions for the scattered wave fields are given in the form of Sommerfeld integrals. Abstract: In this paper, we represent the exact solution of a two phase inverse spherical Stefan problem, where along with unknown temperature functions heat flux function has to be determined. Suggested solution is obtained from new form of integral error function and its properties which are represented in the form of series whose coefficients have to be determined. The model problem can be used for mathematical modeling and investigation of arc phenomena in electrical contacts.

Abstract: This article proposes asymptotic methods for calculating Sommerfeld integrals, which enable us to calculate the integral using the expansion of a function into an infinite power series at the saddle point, where the role of a rapidly oscillating function under the integral can be fulfilled either by an exponential or by its product by the Hankel function. The proposed types of Sommerfeld integrals are generalized on the basis of integral representations of the Hertz radiator fields in the form of the inverse Hankel transform with the subsequent replacement of the Bessel function by the Hankel function. It is shown that the numerical values of the saddle point are complex. During integration, reference or so-called standard integrals, which contain the main features of the integrand function, were used. As a demonstration of the accuracy of the technique, a previously known asymptotic formula for the Hankel functions was obtained in the form of an infinite series. The proposed method for calculating Sommerfeld integrals can be useful in solving the half-space Sommerfeld problem. The authors present an example in the form of an infinite series for the magnetic field of reflected waves, obtained directly through the Sommerfeld integral (SI).
