Abstract

Different extensions of the standard model of particle physics, such as braneworld or mirror matter models, predict the existence of a neutron sterile state, possibly as a dark matter candidate. This Letter reports a new experimental constraint on the probability $p$ for neutron conversion into a hidden neutron, set by the STEREO experiment at the high flux reactor of the Institut Laue-Langevin. The limit is $p<3.1\times 10^{-11}$ at $95 \%$ C.L. improving the previous limit by a factor 13. This result demonstrates that short-baseline neutrino experiments can be used as competitive passing-through-walls neutron experiments to search for hidden neutrons., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

Abstract

MURMUR is a new passing-through-walls neutron experiment designed to constrain neutron/hidden neutron transitions allowed in the context of braneworld scenarios or mirror matter models. A nuclear reactor can act as a hidden neutron source, such that neutrons travel through a hidden world or sector. Hidden neutrons can propagate out of the nuclear core and far beyond the biological shielding. However, hidden neutrons can weakly interact with usual matter, making possible for their detection in the context of low-noise measurements. In the present work, the novelty rests on a better background discrimination and the use of a mass of a material - here lead - able to enhance regeneration of hidden neutrons into visible ones to improve detection. The input of this new setup is studied using both modelizations and experiments, thanks to tests currently performed with the experiment at the BR2 research nuclear reactor (SCK$\cdot$CEN, Mol, Belgium). A new limit on the neutron swapping probability p has been derived thanks to the measurements taken during the BR2 Cycle 02/2019A: $p < 4.0 \ \times 10^{-10}$ at 95% CL. This constraint is better than the bound from the previous passing-through-wall neutron experiment made at ILL in 2015, despite BR2 is less efficient to generate hidden neutrons by a factor 7.4, thus raising the interest of such experiment using regenerating materials., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, final version, accepted for publication in European Physical Journal C

Abstract

The STEREO experiment is a very short baseline reactor antineutrino experiment aiming at testing the hypothesis of light sterile neutrinos as an explanation of the deficit of the observed neutrino interaction rate with respect to the predicted rate, known as the Reactor Antineutrino Anomaly. The detector center is located 10 m away from the compact, highly $^{235}$U enriched core of the research nuclear reactor of the Institut Laue Langevin in Grenoble, France. This paper describes the STEREO site, the detector components and associated shielding designed to suppress the external sources of background which were characterized on site. Abstract

In nuclear reactors operating in nominal conditions, delayed neutrons (DN) drive the kinetic behavior of the neutron population. Predicting this behavior requires therefore the knowledge of the DN yield per fission, average lifetime, and kinetic of their emission, which is described by precursors groups abundances. Characterizing the uncertainties of these macroscopic data is essential, especially as they are used to design the safety margins of reactors. Even for major fissile isotopes such as 235U and 239Pu, discrepancies still appear between the main nuclear data library. In 2018, CEA launched the ALDEN project (Average Lifetime of DElayed Neutrons), gathering several laboratories (CEA/DES and DRF, CNRS/LPSC, LP2i and LPC Caen, ENSICAEN, and University of Caen). This collaboration aims at producing new precise DN macroscopic data for reactor applications. Three experimental campaigns were conducted in 2018, 2019 and 2021 on the thermal fission of 233U, 235U and 239Pu at Institut Laue Langevin in Grenoble (France), giving high quality results. In February 2023, a new campaign was performed at the PTB Ion Accelerator Facility in Braunschweig (Germany), focusing on the fast fission of 238U. In particular, the DN yield was measured for eight energies between 1.5 and 19 MeV. This paper presents the experimental setup, that was adapted to the new facility and neutron spectrum. The methodology of analysis is also detailed, and some preliminary delayed neutron decay curves are showed.

A re-evaluation of the Molten Salt Breeder Reactor concept has revealed problems related to its safety and to the complexity of the reprocessing considered. A reflection is carried out anew in view of finding innovative solutions leading to the Thorium Molten Salt Reactor concept. Several main constraints are established and serve as guides to parametric evaluations. These then give an understanding of the influence of important core parameters on the reactor's operation. Abstract

Research on accelerator driven systems (ADS), related new fuels and their ability for nuclear waste incineration has led to a revival of interest in nuclear cross sections of many nuclides over a large energy range. Discrepancies observed between nuclear data bases require new measurements in several cases. A complete measurement of such cross sections including resonance resolution consists of an extensive beam time experiment associated to a long process of analysis ans validation. With a slowing down spectrometer associated to a pulsed neutron source, it is possible to determine good cross section profile in an energy range from 0.1 eV to 40 keV. Abstract

Nuclear fission yields data measurements for thermal neutron induced fission of 241Pu have been carried out at the ILL in Grenoble, using the Lohengrin mass spectrometer. The relative isotopic yields for the masses 137 up to 141 have been derived with the associated experimental covariance matrices. Moreover, from preliminary results for the masses 92, 138 and 139, a clear evolution over fission product kinetic energy of the isotopic total count rate is observed.

Abstract

International audience; Nuclear fission yields data measurements for thermal neutron induced fissionof 241Pu have been carried out at the Institut Laue Langevin (ILL) in Grenoble, using theLohengrin mass spectrometer. Mass, isotopic and isomeric yields have been extracted forthe last measurements. A focus is given in this document to the mass yield results whichare obtained for almost the entire heavy peak and most of the light high yields masses,along with the covariance matrix. The mean kinetic energy as a function of the fissionproduct mass has also been extracted from the measurements. The total mean kineticenergy pre and post neutron emission have been assessed and compared to other worksshowing a rather good agreement.

Abstract

International audience; In nuclear scenario studies, the use of simplified assembly models to simulate fuel irradiation in nuclear reactor core can lead to important biases. To calculate the spent fuel composition, the CLASS package (Core Library for Advanced Scenario Simulations) uses a physic model (usually, we define physics model as: 1- Fuel Loading Model, 2- Cross Section Predictor, 3- Bateman Solver), based on a large number of different fuel evolution simulations. For that, a simple and reproducible model has been chosen: the “assembly model” that is described in this paper. In this model, the whole core is represented by a single assembly, or a part of it, with reflecting boundary conditions.As a first step to quantify the errors related to this approximation, three real size assembly configurations have been simulated: a reflected one, an axial open one and a realistic one (with moderator and reflector at its top and bottom). An exhaustive comparison is presented in this paper. Hence this work focuses on the neutron axial leakage impact on burn-up and isotope inventories calculations.Evolutions up to 50 GWd/t have been simulated with the depletion code MURE for all the geometries and main isotope inventories, fission and capture cross sections and Keff have been reported for each time step. Axial leakage effects on neutron spectrum and inventory distributions have been observed. In this paper, a bias quantification of axial leakage and a comparison with homogeneous leakage models, available in the Serpent code, are analyzed.

Abstract

Nuclear fission yields data measurements for thermal neutron induced fission of 241Pu have been carried out at the ILL in Grenoble, using the Lohengrin mass spectrometer. The relative isotopic yields for the masses 137 up to 141 have been derived with the associated experimental covariance matrices. Moreover, from preliminary results for the masses 92, 138 and 139, a clear evolution over fission product kinetic energy of the isotopic total count rate is observed. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; The global warming, the increase of world population and the depletion of fossil resourceshave lead us in a major energy crisis. Using electronuclear energy could be one of the meansto solve a part of these issues. The way out of this crisis may be enlightened by the study oftransitional scenarios, guiding the political decisions. The reliability of those studies passesthrough the wide variety of the simulation tools and the comparison between them.From this perspective and in order to perform complex electronuclear scenario simulation,the open source Core Library for Advance Scenario Simulation (CLASS) is being developed.CLASS main asset is its ability to include any kind of reactor, whether the system is innovativeor standard. A reactor is fully described by its evolution database that must contain a set ofdifferent fuel compositions in order to simulate transitional scenarios. CLASS aims at being auseful tool to study scenarios involving Generation IV reactors as well as innovative fuel cycles,like the Thorium cycle.The following contribution will present in detail the CLASS software. Starting with the workingprinciple of this tool, one will explain the working process of the different modules suchas the evolution module. It will be followed by an exhaustive presentation of the UOX-MOXbases generation procedure. Finally a brief analysis of the error made by the CLASS evolutionmodule will be presented.

International audience; The possible delay of decades for the deployment of fourth generation reactors brings upnew issues. Countries like France which are storing Plutonium for years in prediction ofstarting FBR could have to adapt their plutonium management strategy.We have compared different strategies for plutonium recycling in PWR reactors. We havechosen to limit the scope of this study to PWRs considering the standard uranium cycle,and we investigated the influence of the heterogeneity in the assembly that would containthe recycled plutonium. The comparison of different strategies is made at steady-state.This paper present a specific method developed to allow complete and detailed studiesof equilibrium scenarios and how it has been implemented and integrated inside the opensourceMURE package.We will then discuss of the results obtained through this method apply to PWRs loadedwith homogeneous and heterogeneous assemblies using the following criteria: resourceconsumption, Pu inventories in the cycle and waste production

Abstract

Research on accelerator driven systems (ADS), related new fuels and their ability for nuclear waste incineration has led to a revival of interest in nuclear cross sections of many nuclides over a large energy range. Discrepancies observed between nuclear data bases require new measurements in several cases. A complete measurement of such cross sections including resonance resolution consists of an extensive beam time experiment associated to a long process of analysis ans validation. With a slowing down spectrometer associated to a pulsed neutron source, it is possible to determine good cross section profile in an energy range from 0.1 eV to 40 keV. These measurements performed at ISN (Grenoble) with neutron source GENEPI requires only small quantities of matter (as small as 0.1 g) and about one day of beam per target.

Abstract

Energy and space distributions of spallation neutrons (from 2.5 and 3.57 GeV/c CERN proton beams) slowing down in a 3.3 X 3.3 X 3 m(3) lead volume and neutron capture rates on long-lived fission fragments Tc-99 and I-129 demonstrate that Adiabatic Resonance Crossing (ARC) can be used to eliminate efficiently such nuclear waste and validate innovative simulation.
