Search

Ever since they were first detected in the interstellar medium, the radio wavelength (3.3 GHz) hyperfine-structure splitting transitions in the rotational ground state of CH have been observed to show anomalous excitation. Astonishingly, this behaviour has been uniformly observed towards a variety of different sources probing a wide range of physical conditions. While the observed level inversion can be explained globally by a pumping scheme involving collisions, a description of the extent of 'over-excitation' observed in individual sources requires the inclusion of radiative processes, involving transitions at higher rotational levels. Therefore, a complete description of the excitation mechanism in the CH ground state, observed towards individual sources entails observational constraints from the rotationally excited levels of CH and in particular that of its first rotationally excited state. Given the limited detections of these lines, the objective of this work is to characterise the physical and excitation properties of the rotationally excited lines of CH near 700 MHz, and investigate their influence on the pumping mechanisms of the ground-state lines of CH. We present NOrthern Extended Millimeter Array observations of CO(8-7), (9-8), and (10-9) lines, as well as the underlying continuum for two far-infrared luminous quasars: SDSS J2054-0005 at $\rm z=6.0389$ and SDSS J0129-0035 at $\rm z=5.7788$. Both quasars were previously detected in CO (2-1) and (6-5) transitions, making them candidates for studying the CO Spectral Line Energy Distribution (SLED) of quasars at $z \sim 6$. Utilizing the radiative transfer code CLOUDY, we fit the CO SLED with two heating mechanisms, including the photo-dissociation region (PDR) and X-ray-dominated region (XDR) for both objects. The CO SLEDs can be fitted by either a dense PDR component with an extremely strong far-ultraviolet radiation field (gas density $ n_{\rm H} \sim 10^6 \, \rm cm^{-3}$ and field strength $G_0 \gtrsim 10^6$) or a two-component model including a PDR and an XDR. However, the line ratios, including \tir and previous \cii and \ci measurements, argue against a very high PDR radiation field strength. Thus, the results prefer a PDR+XDR origin for the CO SLED. The excitation of the high-J CO lines in both objects is likely dominated by the central AGN. We then check the CO (9-8)-to-(6-5) line luminosity ratio $r_{96}$ for all $z \sim 6$ quasars with available CO SLEDs (seven in total) and find that there are no clear correlations between $r_{96}$ and both \fir and the AGN UV luminosities. The first very long baseline interferometry (VLBI) detections at 870$\mu$m wavelength (345$\,$GHz frequency) are reported, achieving the highest diffraction-limited angular resolution yet obtained from the surface of the Earth, and the highest-frequency example of the VLBI technique to date. These include strong detections for multiple sources observed on inter-continental baselines between telescopes in Chile, Hawaii, and Spain, obtained during observations in October 2018. The longest-baseline detections approach 11$\,$G$\lambda$ corresponding to an angular resolution, or fringe spacing, of 19$\mu$as. The Allan deviation of the visibility phase at 870$\mu$m is comparable to that at 1.3$\,$mm on the relevant integration time scales between 2 and 100$\,$s. The detections confirm that the sensitivity and signal chain stability of stations in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) array are suitable for VLBI observations at 870$\mu$m. Operation at this short wavelength, combined with anticipated enhancements of the EHT, will lead to a unique high angular resolution instrument for black hole studies, capable of resolving the event horizons of supermassive black holes in both space and time., Comment: Corresponding author: S. SPT2349$-$56 is a protocluster discovered in the 2500 deg$^2$ South Pole Telescope (SPT) survey. In this paper, we study the kinematics of the galaxies found in the core of SPT2349$-$56 using high-resolution (1.55 kpc spatial resolution at $z = 4.303$) redshifted [CII] 158-$\mu$m data. Using the publicly available code 3D-Barolo, we analyze the seven far-infrared (FIR) brightest galaxies within the protocluster core. Based on conventional definitions for the detection of rotating discs, we classify six sources to be rotating discs in an actively star-forming protocluster environment, with weighted mean $V_{\mathrm{rot}}/\sigma_{\mathrm{disp}} = 4.5 \pm 1.3$. The weighted mean rotation velocity ($V_{\mathrm{rot}}$) and velocity dispersion ($\sigma_{\mathrm{disp}}$) for the sample are $ 357.1 \pm 114.7$ km s$^{-1}$ and $43.5 \pm 23.5$ km s$^{-1}$, respectively. We also assess the disc stability of the galaxies and find a mean Toomre parameter of $Q_\mathrm{T} = 0.9 \pm 0.3$. The galaxies show a mild positive correlation between disc stability and dynamical support. Using the position-velocity maps, we find that five sources further classify as disturbed discs, and one classifies as a strictly rotating disc. Our sample joins several observations at similar redshift with high $V/\sigma$ values, with the exception that they are morphologically disturbed, kinematically rotating and interacting galaxies in an extreme protocluster environment., Comment: 28 pages (9 appendix pages), 14 figures (7 in appendix), 7 tables (3 in appendix). Identifying infall motions is crucial for our understanding of accretion processes in regions of star formation. The NH3 (1,1) hyperfine intensity anomaly (HIA) has been proposed to be a readily usable tracer for such infall motions in star-forming regions harboring young stellar objects at very early evolutionary stages. In this paper, we seek to study the HIA toward fifteen infall candidate regions to assess its reliability as an infall tracer. By using deep observations of the NH3 (1,1) transition with the Effelsberg 100 m telescope, HIAs have been identified toward all the targets. Fourteen out of fifteen sources exhibit anomalous intensities either in the inner or outer satellite lines. All the derived HIAs conform to the framework of the existing two models, namely, hyperfine selective trapping (HST) and systematic contraction or expansion motion (CE) models. In our sample of infall candidates, a majority of the HIAs remain consistent with the HST model. Only in three targets, the HIAs are consistent with infall motions under the CE model. Thus HIAs could be used as an infall tracer but seem not highly sensitive to infall motions in our single-dish data. Nevertheless, the emission could be blended with emission from outflow activities. HIAs consistent with the HST model show stronger anomalies with increasing kinetic temperatures (Tk), which is expected by the HST model. On the other hand, HIAs consistent with infall motions show little dependence on Tk. (abridged) Together with gravity, turbulence, and stellar feedback, magnetic fields (B-fields) are thought to play a critical role in the evolution of molecular clouds and star formation processes. We aim to map the morphology and measure the strength of B-fields of the nearby molecular cloud, rho Ophiuchus-A ($\rho$ Oph-A), and then to understand the role of B-fields in regulating star formation and shaping the cloud. We have analyzed the far-infrared (FIR) polarization of thermal dust emission observed by SOFIA/HAWC$+$ at 89 and 154 $\mu$m toward the densest part of $\rho$ Oph-A, which is irradiated by the nearby B3/4 star, Oph-S1. The cloud exhibits well-ordered B-fields with magnetic orientations mainly perpendicular to the ridge of the cloud toward the densest region and B-field strengths are in the range of 0.2-2.5 mG, using the Davis-Chandrasekhar-Fermi method. The B-fields are strongest at the densest part of the cloud, which is associated with the starless core SM1, and decreases toward the outskirts of the cloud. By calculating the map of the mass-to-flux ratio, Alfv\'en Mach number, and plasma $\beta$ parameter in $\rho$ Oph-A, we find that the cloud is predominantly magnetically sub-critical, sub-Alfv\'enic, which implies that the cloud is supported by strong B-fields that dominate over gravity, turbulence, and thermal gas energy. Measured B-field strengths at two densest subregions using other methods that account for the compressible mode are relatively lower than that measured with the DCF method but do not significantly change our conclusions on the roles of B-fields relative to gravity and turbulence on star formation. A virial analysis suggests that the cloud is gravitationally unbound. We present JWST NIRCam imaging targeting 13 $z\sim3$ infrared-luminous ($L_{\rm IR}\sim5\times10^{12}L_{\odot}$) galaxies from the ALESS survey with uniquely deep, high-resolution (0.08$''$$-$0.16$''$) ALMA 870$\mu$m imaging. The 2.0$-$4.4$\mu$m (observed frame) NIRCam imaging reveals the rest-frame near-infrared stellar emission in these submillimeter-selected galaxies (SMGs) at the same (sub-)kpc resolution as the 870$\mu$m dust continuum. The newly revealed stellar morphologies show striking similarities with the dust continuum morphologies at 870$\mu$m, with the centers and position angles agreeing for most sources, clearly illustrating that the spatial offsets reported previously between the 870$\mu$m and HST morphologies were due to strong differential dust obscuration. The F444W sizes are 78$\pm$21% larger than those measured at 870$\mu$m, in contrast to recent results from hydrodynamical simulations that predict larger 870$\mu$m sizes. We report evidence for significant dust obscuration in F444W for the highest-redshift sources, emphasizing the importance of longer-wavelength MIRI imaging. The majority of the sources show evidence that they are undergoing mergers/interactions, including tidal tails/plumes -- some of which are also detected at 870$\mu$m. We find a clear correlation between NIRCam colors and 870$\mu$m surface brightness on $\sim$1 kpc scales, indicating that the galaxies are primarily red due to dust -- not stellar age -- and we show that the dust structure on $\sim$kpc-scales is broadly similar to that in nearby galaxies. Finally, we find no strong stellar bars in the rest-frame near-infrared, suggesting the extended bar-like features seen at 870$\mu$m are highly obscured and/or gas-dominated structures that are likely early precursors to significant bulge growth., Comment: 26 pages, 10 figures. We combine a new Galactic plane survey of Hydrogen Radio Recombination Lines (RRLs) with far-infrared (FIR) surveys of ionized Nitrogen, N+, to determine Nitrogen abundance across Galactic radius. RRLs were observed with NASA DSS-43 70m antenna and the Green Bank Telescope in 108 lines-of-sight spanning -135 degrees < l < 60 degrees, at b=0 degrees. These positions were also observed in [N II] 122 um and 205 um lines with the Herschel Space Observatory. Combining RRL and [N II] 122 um and 205 um observations in 41 of 108 samples with high signal-to-noise ratio, we studied ionized Nitrogen abundance distribution across Galactocentric distances of 0-8 kpc. Combined with existing Solar neighborhood and Outer galaxy N/H abundance determinations, we studied this quantity's distribution within the Milky Way's inner 17 kpc for the first time. We found a Nitrogen abundance gradient extending from Galactocentric radii of 4-17 kpc in the Galactic plane, while within 0-4 kpc, the N/H distribution remained flat. The gradient observed at large Galactocentric distances supports inside-out galaxy growth with the additional steepening resulting from variable star formation efficiency and/or radial flows in the Galactic disk, while the inner 4 kpc flattening, coinciding with the Galactic bar's onset, may be linked to radial flows induced by the bar potential. Using SOFIA/FIFI-LS and Herschel/PACS, we observed the [N III] 57 um line to trace doubly ionized gas contribution in a sub-sample of sightlines. We use the H$41\alpha$ recombination line to create templates of the millimeter free-free emission in the ALMA-IMF continuum maps, which allows to separate it from dust emission. This method complements spectral-index information and extrapolation from centimeter wavelength maps. We use the derived maps to estimate the properties of up to 34 HII regions across the ALMA-IMF protoclusters. The hydrogen ionizing-photon rate $Q_0$ and spectral types follow the evolutionary trend proposed by Motte et al. The youngest protoclusters lack detectable ionized gas, followed by protoclusters with increasing numbers of OB stars. The total $Q_0$ increases from $\sim 10^{45}$ s$^{-1}$ to $> 10^{49}$ s$^{-1}$. We used the adjacent He$41\alpha$ line to measure the relative number abundances of helium, finding values consistent with the Galactic interstellar medium, although a few outliers are discussed. A search for sites of maser amplification of the H$41\alpha$ line returned negative results. We looked for possible correlations between the electron densities ($n_e$), emission measures (EM), and $Q_0$ with HII region size $D$. The latter are the better correlated, with $Q_0 \propto D^{2.49\pm0.18}$. This favors interpretations where smaller ultracompact HII regions are not necessarily the less dynamically evolved versions of larger ones, but rather are ionized by less massive stars. Moderate correlations were found between dynamical width $\Delta V_\mathrm{dyn}$ with $D$ and $Q_0$. $\Delta V_\mathrm{dyn}$ increases from about one to two times the ionized-gas sound speed. Finally, an outlier HII region south of W43-MM2 is discussed. We suggest that this source could harbor an embedded stellar or disk wind., Comment: Accepted to AAS Journals (ApJS). H II regions are the signposts of massive ($M\geq\,8\,M_\odot$) star-forming sites in our Galaxy. It has been observed that the ionizing photon rate inferred from the radio continuum emission of H II regions is significantly lower ($\sim$ 90%) than that inferred from far-infrared fluxes measured by IRAS. This discrepancy in the ionizing photon rates may arise due to there being significant amounts of dust within the H II regions or the presence of extended emission that is undetected by high-resolution radio interferometric observations. Here, we study a sample of eight compact and ultracompact H II regions with extended emission to explore its role in resolving the discrepancy. We have used observations at the uGMRT (1.25-1.45 GHz) and data from the GLOSTAR survey (4-8 GHz) to estimate the ionizing photon rate from the radio continuum emission. We have also estimated the ionizing photon rate from the infrared luminosity by fitting a spectral energy distribution function to the infrared data from the GLIMPSE, MIPSGAL, and Hi-GAL surveys. The excellent sensitivity of the radio observations to extended emission allows us to investigate the actual fraction of ionizing photons that are absorbed by dust in compact and ultracompact H II regions. Barring one source, we find a direct association between the radio continuum emission from the compact and diffuse components of the H II region. Our study shows that the ionizing photon rates estimated using the radio and infrared data are within reasonable agreement (5-28%) if we include the extended emission. The radio transient ASKAP J173608.2-321735, at the position (l,b)= (356.0872,-0.0390), was serendipitously observed by The HI/OH/Recombination Line Survey of the Galactic Center (THOR-GC) at three epochs in March 2020, April 2020 and February 2021. The source was detected only on 2020 April 11 with flux density 20.6 +/- 1.1 mJy at 1.23 GHz and in-band spectral index alpha = -3.1 +/- 0.2. The commensal VLA Low-band Ionsophere and Transient Experiment (VLITE) simultaneously detected the source at 339 MHz with a flux density 122.6 +/- 20.4 mJy, indicating a spectral break below 1 GHz. The rotation measure in April 2020 was 63.9 +/- 0.3rad/m2, which almost triples the range of the variable rotation measure observed by Wang et al. (2021) to ~130 rad/m2. The polarization angle, corrected for Faraday rotation, was 97 +/- 6 degrees. The 1.23 GHz linear polarization was 76.7% +/- 3.9% with wavelength-dependent depolarization indicating Faraday depth dispersion sigma_phi = 4.8^{+0.5}_{-0.7} rad/m2. We find an upper limit to circular polarization |V|/I < 10.1%. Interpretation of the data in terms of diffractive scattering of radio waves by a plasma near the source indicates electron density and line-of-sight magnetic field strength within a factor 3 of n_e ~2 cm^{-3} and B_par ~2 x 10^5 microgauss. Combined with causality limits to the size of the source, these parameters are consistent with the low-frequency spectral break resulting from synchrotron self-absorption, not free-free absorption. CF$^{+}$ has been established as a valuable diagnostic tool for investigating photo-dissociation regions (PDRs) and fluorine abundances in the Milky Way. However, its role in extragalactic environments remains largely uncharted. Our objective is to explore the significance of CF$^{+}$ in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) and assess its utility as a valuable probe for examining C$^{+}$ and fluorine abundances in external galaxies. We performed pointed CF$^{+}$ observations toward an active star-forming region, N113 in the LMC, using the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment 12~m sub-millimeter telescope. We report the first discovery of CF$^{+}$ in the LMC through the successful detection of the CF$^{+}$ (2$\to$1) and (3$\to$2) lines. The excitation models indicate that CF$^{+}$ emission originates from dense PDRs characterized by an H$_{2}$ number density of $(0.5-7.9)\times 10^{4}$~cm$^{-3}$ in N113. Our observations provide the first constraint on the fluorine abundance in molecular clouds in the LMC, disclosing a value of $\lesssim 1.7\times 10^{-9}$. This value is about an order of magnitude lower than those previously measured toward red giants in the LMC, indicative of fluorine deficiency in the molecular gas. The estimated column density ratio between C$^{+}$ and CF$^{+}$ appears to be lower than the anticipated equilibrium ratio derived from the fluorine abundance in red giants. Both phenomena can be explained by the deficiency of CF$^{+}$ caused by the freeze-out of its primary chemical precursor, HF, onto dust grains. The deficiency of CF$^{+}$ within molecular clouds suggests that the measurements presented in this work serve exclusively as conservative estimates, establishing lower bounds for both the fluorine abundance and C$^{+}$ column densities in external galaxies., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures, 1 table, accepted for publication in A&A

The Lagoon Nebula (M8) is host to multiple regions with recent and ongoing massive star formation. With M8-Main and M8 East, two prominent regions of massive star formation have been studied in detail over the past years, while large parts of the nebula have received little attention. These largely unexplored regions comprise a large sample of molecular clumps that are affected by the presence of massive O- and B-type stars. We establish an inventory of species observed towards 37 known molecular clumps in M8 by conducting an unbiased line survey for each clump. For this, we used APEX and the IRAM 30m telescope for pointed on-off observations on the clumps. These observations cover bandwidths of 53GHz and 40GHz in frequency ranges from 210GHz to 280GHz and from 70GHz to 117GHz, respectively. Temperatures are derived from rotational transitions of CH3CN, CH3C2H and para-H2CO. Additional archival data from the Spitzer, Herschel, MSX, APEX, WISE, JCMT and AKARI telescopes are used to derive physical parameters of the dust emission by fitting spectral energy distributions to the observed flux densities. Across the observed M8 region, we identify 346 transitions from 70 different molecular species, including isotopologues. We detect tracers of photo-dissociation regions across all the clumps and 38% of these clumps show signs of star formation. We find that PDR tracers are most abundant in clumps with relatively lower H2 column densities. When comparing M8 clumps to ATLASGAL sources at similar distances, we find them to be slightly less massive and have compatible luminosities and radii. This possibly indicates a fragmentation of the gas caused by the O- and B-type stars. In contrast, dust temperatures of the clumps in M8 are found to be increased by approximately 5K (25%) indicating substantial external heating of the clumps by radiation of the present massive stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A Corrected headings of Tab. Dust grains are important in various astrophysical processes and serve as indicators of interstellar medium structures, density, and mass. Understanding their physical properties and chemical composition is crucial in astrophysics. Dust polarisation is a valuable tool for studying these properties. The Radiative Torque (RAT) paradigm, which includes Radiative Torque Alignment (RAT-A) and Radiative Torque Disruption (RAT-D), is essential to interpret the dust polarisation data and constrain the fundamental properties of dust grains. However, it has been used primarily to interpret observations at a single wavelength. In this study, we analyse the thermal dust polarisation spectrum obtained from observations with SOFIA/HAWC+ and JCMT/POL-2 in the OMC-1 region and compare the observational data with our numerical results using the RAT paradigm. In general, we show that the dense gas exhibits a positive spectral slope, whereas the warm regions show a negative one. We demonstrate that a one-layer dust (one-phase) model can only reproduce the observed spectra at certain locations and cannot match those with prominent V-shaped spectra (for which the degree of polarisation initially decreases with wavelength from 54 to $\sim$ 300$\,\mu$m and then increases at longer wavelengths). To address this, we improve our model by incorporating two dust components (warm and cold) along the line of sight, resulting in a two-phase model. This improved model successfully reproduces the V-shaped spectra. The best model corresponds to a mixture composition of silicate and carbonaceous grains in the cold medium. Finally, by assuming the plausible model of grain alignment, we infer the inclination angle of the magnetic fields in OMC-1. The mass assembly in star forming regions arises from the hierarchical structure in molecular clouds in tandem with fragmentation at different scales. In this paper, we present a study of the fragmentation of massive clumps covering a range of evolutionary states, selected from the ATLASGAL survey, using the compact configuration of the Submillimeter Array. The observations reveal a wide diversity in the fragmentation properties with about 60% of the sources showing limited to no fragmentation at the 2" scale, or a physical scale of 0.015 - 0.09 pc. We also find several examples where the cores detected with the Submillimeter array are significantly offset from the clump potential suggesting that initial fragmentation does not result in the formation of a large number of Jeans mass fragments. The fraction of the clump mass that is in compact structures is seen to increase with source evolution. We also see a significant correlation between the maximum mass of a fragment and the bolometric luminosity of the parent clump. These suggest that massive star formation proceeds through clump fed core accretion with the initial fragmentation being dependent on the density structure of the clumps and/or magnetic fields., Comment: Accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

W43-main is a massive molecular complex located at the interaction of the Scutum arm and the Galactic bar undergoing starburst activities. We aim to investigate the gas dynamics, in particular, the prevailing shock signatures from the cloud to clump scale and assess the impact of shocks on the formation of dense gas and early-stage cores. We have carried out NOEMA and IRAM-30m observations at 3 mm with an angular resolution of $\sim$0.1 pc towards five massive clumps in W43 main. We use CH$_{3}$CCH and H$_{2}$CS lines to trace the extended gas temperature and CH$_{3}$OH lines to probe the volume density of the dense gas ($\gtrsim$10$^{5}$ cm$^{-3}$). The emission of SiO (2-1) is extensive across the region ($\sim$4 pc) and is mostly contained within a low-velocity regime, hinting at a large-scale origin of the shocks. The position-velocity maps of multiple tracers show systematic spatio-kinematic offsets supporting the cloud-cloud collision/merging scenario. We identify an additional extended velocity component in CCH emission, which coincides with one of the velocity components of the larger scale $^{13}$CO (2-1) emission, likely representing an outer, less dense gas layer in the cloud merging process. We find that the V-shaped, asymmetric SiO wings are tightly correlated with localised gas density enhancements, which is direct evidence of dense gas formation and accumulation in shocks. We resolve two categories of NH$_{2}$D cores: ones exhibiting only subsonic to transonic velocity dispersion, and the others with an additional supersonic velocity dispersion. The centroid velocities of the latter cores are correlated with the shock front seen by SiO. The kinematics of the $\sim$0.1 pc NH$_{2}$D cores are heavily imprinted by shock activities, and may represent a population of early-stage cores forming around the shock interface., Comment: 35 pages, 34 figures (including appendices); Accepted in A&A

We present observations using the NOrthern Extended Millimetre Array (NOEMA) of CO and $\rm H_{2}O$ emission lines, and the underlying dust continuum in two quasars at $z \sim 6$, i.e., P215-16 at $z$ = 5.78 and J1429+5447 at $z$ = 6.18. Notably, among all published CO SLEDs of quasars at $z \sim 6$, the two systems reveal the highest and the lowest CO level of excitation, respectively. Our radiative transfer modeling of the CO SLED of P215-16 suggests that the molecular gas heated by AGN could be a plausible origin for the high CO excitation. For J1429+5447, we obtain the first well-sampled CO SLED (from transitions from 2-1 to 10-9) of a radio-loud quasar at $z\gtrsim 6$. Analysis of the CO SLED suggests that a single photo-dissociation region (PDR) component could explain the CO excitation in the radio-loud quasar J1429+5447. This work highlights the utility of the CO SLED in uncovering the ISM properties in these young quasar-starburst systems at the highest redshift. Stellar feedback plays a crucial role in star formation and the life cycle of molecular clouds. The intense star formation region 30 Doradus, which is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), is a unique target for detailed investigation of stellar feedback owing to the proximity of the hosting galaxy and modern observational capabilities that together allow us to resolve individual molecular clouds $-$ nurseries of star formation. We study the impact of large-scale feedback on the molecular gas using the new observational data in the $^{12}$CO(3$-$2) line obtained with the APEX telescope. Our data cover an unprecedented area of 13.9 sq. deg. of the LMC disc with a spatial resolution of 5 pc and provide an unbiased view on the molecular clouds in the galaxy. Using this data, we locate molecular clouds in the disc of the galaxy, estimate their properties such as the areal number density, relative velocity and separation, width of the line profile, CO-line luminosity, size, virial mass and compare these properties between the clouds of 30 Doradus and those in the rest of the LMC disc. We find that compared with the rest of the observed molecular clouds in the LMC disc, those in 30 Doradus show the highest areal number density; they are spatially more clustered, move faster with respect to each other and feature larger linewidths. In parallel, we do not find statistically significant differences in such properties as the CO-line luminosity, size, and virial mass between the clouds of 30 Doradus and the rest of the observed field. Studying stars that are located off the Galactic plane is important for understanding the formation history of the Milky Way. We searched for SiO masers toward off-plane O-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars from the catalog presented by Mauron et al. (2019) in order to shed light on the origin of these objects. A total of 102 stars were observed in the SiO $J$=1-0, $v=1$ and 2 transitions with the Effelsberg-100 m and Tianma-65 m telescopes. SiO masers were discovered in eight stars, all first detections. The measured maser velocities allow the first estimates of the host AGB stars' radial velocities. We find that the radial velocities of three stars (namely G068.881-24.615, G070.384-24.886, and G084.453-21.863) significantly deviate from the values expected from Galactic circular motion. The updated distances and 3D motions indicate that G068.881$-$24.615 is likely located in the Galactic halo, while G160.648-08.846 is probably located in the Galactic thin disk, and the other six stars are probably part of the Galactic thick disk., Comment: 15 pages, 6 figures, 3 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We want to investigate the influence of the powerful outflow driven by the hot core Sgr B2(N1) on the gas molecular inventory of the surrounding medium. We used the data taken as part of the 3 mm imaging spectral-line survey ReMoCA (Re-exploring Molecular Complexity with ALMA). Integrated intensity maps of SO and SiO emission reveal a bipolar structure with blue-shifted emission dominantly extending to the SE from the centre of the hot core and red-shifted emission to the NW. This is also prominently observed in emission of other S-bearing molecules and species that only contain N as a heavy element, including COMs, but also CH3OH, CH3CHO, HNCO, and NH2CHO. For a selection of COMs and simpler species, spectra were modelled under the assumption of LTE and population diagrams were derived at two positions, one in each outflow lobe. From this analysis, we obtained rotational temperatures, which are in a range of ~100-200K, and column densities. Abundances were subsequently compared to predictions of astrochemical models and to observations of L1157-B1, a position located in the well-studied outflow of the low-mass protostar L1157, and the source G+0.693-0.027, located in the Sgr B2 molecular cloud complex. Given the short distance of the analysed outflow positions to the centre of Sgr B2(N1), we propose a scenario in which a phase of hot-core chemistry (i.e. thermal desorption of ice species and high-temperature gas-phase chemistry) preceded a shock wave. The subsequent compression and further heating of the material resulted in the accelerated destruction of (mainly O-bearing) molecules. Gas-phase formation of cyanides seems to be able to compete with their destruction in the post-shock gas. Abundances of HCnN (n=3,5) are enhanced in the outflow component pointing to (additional) gas-phase formation. (Abridged) Context. Massive star formation is associated with energetic processes, which result in significant gas cooling via far-infrared (IR) lines. Velocity-resolved observations can constrain the kinematics of the gas, allowing the identification of the physical mechanisms responsible for gas heating. Aims. Our aim is to quantify far-infrared CO line emission toward high-mass star-forming regions, identify the high-velocity gas component associated with outflows, and estimate the physical conditions required for the excitation of the observed lines. Methods. Velocity-resolved SOFIA/GREAT spectra of 13 high-mass star forming clumps of various luminosities and evolutionary stages are studied using CO 11-10 and 16-15 lines. Results. All targets show strong high-J CO emission in the far-IR, characterized by broad line wings associated with outflows, thereby significantly increasing the sample of sources with velocity-resolved high-J CO spectra. The contribution of the emission in the line wings does not correlate with the envelope mass or evolutionary stage. Gas rotational temperatures cover a narrow range of 120-220 K for the line wings. The non-LTE radiative transfer models indicate gas densities of 1e5-1e7 cm-3 and N(CO) of 1e17- 1e18 cm-2, similar to physical conditions in deeply-embedded low- and high-mass protostars. The velocity-integrated CO line fluxes correlate with the bolometric luminosity over 7 orders of magnitude including data on the low-mass protostars, suggesting similar processes are responsible for the high-J CO excitation over a significant range of physical scales. Conclusions. Velocity-resolved line profiles allow the detection of outflows toward massive star-forming clumps spanning a broad range of evolutionary stages. In the last years there has been a substantial increase in the number of the reported massive and luminous star-forming regions with related explosive outflows thanks to the superb sensitivity and angular resolution provided by the new radio, infrared, and optical facilities. Here, we report one more explosive outflow related with the massive and bright star-forming region IRAS 12326$-$6245 using Band 6 sensitive and high angular resolution ($\sim$0.2$"$) Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations. We find over 10 molecular and collimated well-defined streamers, with Hubble-Lemaitre like expansion motions, and pointing right to the center of a dusty and molecular shell (reported for the first time here) localized in the northern part of the UCHII region known as G301.1A. The estimated kinematic age, and energy for the explosion are $\sim$700 yrs, and 10$^{48}$ erg, respectively. Taking into account the recently reported explosive outflows together with IRAS 12326$-$6245, we estimate an event rate of once every 90 yr in our Galaxy, similar to the formation rate of massive stars., Comment: Accepted to The Astrophysical Journal Letters

The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observed in 2017 the supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way, Sagittarius A* (Sgr A*), at a frequency of 228.1 GHz ($\lambda$=1.3 mm). The fundamental physics tests that even a single pulsar orbiting Sgr A* would enable motivate searching for pulsars in EHT datasets. The high observing frequency means that pulsars - which typically exhibit steep emission spectra - are expected to be very faint. However, it also negates pulse scattering, an effect that could hinder pulsar detections in the Galactic Center. Additionally, magnetars or a secondary inverse Compton emission could be stronger at millimeter wavelengths than at lower frequencies. We present a search for pulsars close to Sgr A* using the data from the three most-sensitive stations in the EHT 2017 campaign: the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array, the Large Millimeter Telescope and the IRAM 30 m Telescope. We apply three detection methods based on Fourier-domain analysis, the Fast-Folding-Algorithm and single pulse search targeting both pulsars and burst-like transient emission; using the simultaneity of the observations to confirm potential candidates. No new pulsars or significant bursts were found. Being the first pulsar search ever carried out at such high radio frequencies, we detail our analysis methods and give a detailed estimation of the sensitivity of the search. We conclude that the EHT 2017 observations are only sensitive to a small fraction ($\lesssim$2.2%) of the pulsars that may exist close to Sgr A*, motivating further searches for fainter pulsars in the region., Comment: 33 pages, 7 figures, 6 Tables. U Equ is an unusual maser-hosting IR source discovered in the 1990s. It was tentatively classified as a post-AGB star with a unique optical spectrum displaying rare emission and absorption features from molecular gas. In 2022, we discovered that its optical spectrum has drastically changed. Methods: Optical high-resolution spectra of U Equ from SALT are supplemented by archival data and NIR photometry from NOT. New spectral line observations with the Effelsberg telescope and ALMA are presented. Results: No circumstellar molecular features are present in the contemporary optical spectra of U Equ. Non-photospheric absorption and emission from neutral and ionized species dominate the current spectrum. Some of the observed features indicate an outflow with a terminal velocity of 215 km\s. The H\&K lines of [Ca II] indicate a photosphere of spectral type F. Photometric measurements show that the source has been monotonically increasing its optical and NIR fluxes since the beginning of this century. SEDs at different epochs show dusty circumstellar material arranged in a highly-inclined disk. At a distance of 4 kpc, the source's luminosity is 10$^4$ L$_{\odot}$. Conclusions: The object has changed considerably in the last three decades, either due to geometrical reconfiguration of the circumstellar medium, evolutionary changes in the central star, or owing to an accretion event that has started in the system very recently. Observationally, U Equ appears to resemble the Category 0 of disk-hosting post-AGB stars, especially the post-common envelope binary HD 101584. It is uncertain if the drastic spectral change and the associated optical/MIR rise in brightness are common in post-AGB stars but such a radical change may be related to the real-time onset of the evolution of the system into a planetary nebula. We find that the post-AGB star V576 Car has undergone a similar transformation as U Equ., Comment: Comments welcome!

We present observations of population anti-inversion in the $3_1 - 4_0\ A^+$ transition of CH$_3$OH (methanol) at 107.013831 GHz toward the Galactic Center cloud G0.253+0.016 ("The Brick"). Anti-inversion of molecular level populations can result in absorption lines against the cosmic microwave background (CMB) in a phenomenon known as a "dasar." We model the physical conditions under which the 107 GHz methanol transition dases and determine that dasing occurs at densities below $10^6$ cm$^{-3}$ and column densities between $10^{13}$ and $10^{16}$ cm$^{-2}$. We also find that for this transition, dasing does not strongly depend on the gas kinetic temperature. We evaluate the potential of this tool for future deep galaxy surveys. We note that other works have already reported absorption in this transition (e.g., in NGC 253), but we provide the first definitive evidence that it is absorption against the CMB rather than against undetected continuum sources., Comment: 19 pages, 9 figures, 1 table. Context. The advent of wide-band receiver systems on interferometer arrays enables one to undertake high-sensitivity and high-resolution radio continuum surveys of the Galactic plane in a reasonable amount of telescope time. However, to date, there are only a few such studies of the first quadrant of the Milky Way that have been carried out at frequencies below 1 GHz. The Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) has recently upgraded its receivers with wide-band capabilities (now called the uGMRT) and provides a good opportunity to conduct high resolution surveys, while also being sensitive to the extended structures. Aims. We wish to assess the feasibility of conducting a large-scale snapshot survey, the Metrewave Galactic Plane with the uGMRT Survey (MeGaPluG), to simultaneously map extended sources and compact objects at an angular resolution lower than $10''$ and a point source sensitivity of 0.15 mJy/beam. Methods. We performed an unbiased survey of a small portion of the Galactic plane, covering the W43/W44 regions ($l=29^\circ-35^\circ$ and $|b|<1^\circ$) in two frequency bands: 300$-$500 MHz and 550$-$750 MHz. The 200 MHz wide-band receivers on the uGMRT are employed to observe the target field in several pointings, spending nearly 14 minutes on each pointing in two separate scans. We developed an automated pipeline for the calibration, and a semi-automated self-calibration procedure is used to image each pointing using multi-scale CLEAN and outlier fields. Results. We produced continuum mosaics of the surveyed region at a final common resolution of $25''$ in the two bands that have central frequencies of 400 MHz and 650 MHz, with a point source sensitivity better than 5 mJy/beam. Infrared observations of stellar orbits about Sgr A* probe the mass distribution in the inner parsec of the Galaxy and provide definitive evidence for the existence of a massive black hole. However, the infrared astrometry is relative and is tied to the radio emission from Sgr A* using stellar SiO masers that coincide with infrared-bright stars. To support and improve this two-step astrometry, we present new astrometric observations of 15 stellar SiO masers within 2 pc of Sgr A*. Combined with legacy observations spanning 25.8 years, we re-analyze the relative offsets of these masers from Sgr A* and measure positions and proper motions that are significantly improved compared to the previously published reference frame. Maser positions are corrected for epoch-specific differential aberration, precession, nutation, and solar gravitational deflection. Omitting the supergiant IRS 7, the mean position uncertainties are 0.46 mas and 0.84 mas in RA and Dec., and the mean proper motion uncertainties are 0.07 mas yr$^{-1}$ and 0.12 mas yr$^{-1}$, respectively. At a distance of 8.2 kpc, these correspond to position uncertainties of 3.7 AU and 6.9 AU and proper motion uncertainties of 2.7 km s$^{-1}$ and 4.6 km s$^{-1}$. The reference frame stability, the uncertainty in the variance-weighted mean proper motion of the maser ensemble, is 8 $\mu$as yr$^{-1}$ (0.30 km s$^{-1}$) in RA and 11 $\mu$as yr$^{-1}$ (0.44 km s$^{-1}$) in Dec., which represents a 2.3-fold improvement over previous work and a new benchmark for the maser-based reference frame., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 3 tables. Protostellar jets and outflows are essential ingredients of the star formation process. A better understanding of this phenomenon is important in its own right as well as for many fundamental aspects of star formation. Jets and outflows associated with O-type protostars are rarely studied with observations reaching the close vicinity of the protostars. In this work, we report high-resolution ALMA and VLBA observations to reveal a clear and consistent picture of an outflow associated with an O-type protostar candidate in the G26.50+0.28 region. These observations reveal, for the first time, a collimated jet located in the middle of the outflow cavity. The jet is found to be perpendicular to an elongated disk/toroid and its velocity gradient. The collimated jet appears to show a small amplitude ($\alpha$$\approx$0$\,.\!\!^{\circ}$06) counterclockwise precession, when looking along the blueshifted jet axis from the strongest continuum source MM1, with a precession length of 0.22 pc. The inclination of the jet is likely to be very low ($\approx$8$^{\circ}$), which makes it a promising target to study its transverse morphologies and kinematics. However, no clear evidence of jet rotation is found in the ALMA and VLBA observations. The three-dimensional velocities of the water maser spots appear to show the same absolute speed with respect to different opening angles, suggesting the jet winds may be launched in a relatively small region. Aims: The study at hand aims to describe the distribution of atomic carbon, C0, throughout the envelope, in support of an improved understanding of its photo-chemistry. Additionally, we also briefly discuss the observation of [CII] emission towards the star. Methods: We obtain spectra of the [CI] $\mathrm{^3P_1} \rightarrow \mathrm{^3P_0}$ fine structure line at projected distances of up to 78" from the star. The line profiles are characterized by both direct fitting of Gaussian components, and by modeling the observed line of the [CI] triplet. We also report the detection of the $\mathrm{^2P_{3/2}} \rightarrow \mathrm{^2P_{1/2}}$ line from the C+ fine structure singlet at the central position and at 32" from the star. Results: The overall picture of the [CI] emission from IRC +10216 agrees with more limited previous studies. The satisfying agreement between the observed and modeled line profiles, with emission at the systemic velocity appearing beyond one beam from the star, rules out that the C0 is located in a thin shell. Given that the bond energy of CO falls only 0.1 eV below the ionization threshold of C0, the absence of observable [CII] emission from sightlines beyond a projected distance of $\sim 10^{17}$ cm from the star (adopting a distance of 130 pc) does not contradict a scenario where the bulk of C0 is located between that of CO and C+, as expected for an external FUV radiation field. This conjecture is also corroborated by a model in which the C0 shell is located farther outside, failing to reproduce the [CI] line profiles at intermediate sky-plane distances from the star. Comparing a photo-chemical model adopted from literature with the simplifying assumption of a constant C0 abundance with respect to the $\mathrm{H}_2$ density, we constrain the inner boundary of the [CI] emitting shell, located at $\sim 10^{16}$ cm from the star., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures, accepted for publication in A&A

While the abundance of elemental deuterium is relatively low (D/H ~ a few 1E-5), orders of magnitude higher D/H abundance ratios have been found for many interstellar molecules, enhanced by deuterium fractionation. In cold molecular clouds (T < 20K) deuterium fractionation is driven by the H2D+ ion, whereas at higher temperatures (T > 20-30K) gas-phase deuteration is controlled by reactions with CH2D+ and C2HD+. While the role of H2D+ in driving cold interstellar deuterium chemistry is well understood, thanks to observational constraints from direct measurements of H2D+, deuteration stemming from CH2D+ is far less understood, caused by the absence of direct observational constraints of its key ions. Therefore, making use of chemical surrogates is imperative for exploring deuterium chemistry at intermediate temperatures. Formed at an early stage of ion-molecule chemistry, directly from the dissociative recombination of CH3+ (CH2D+), CH (CD) is an ideal tracer for investigating deuterium substitution initiated by reactions with CH2D+. This paper reports the first detection of CD in the interstellar medium, carried out using the APEX 12m telescope toward the widely studied low-mass protostellar system IRAS 16293-2422. Gas-phase chemical models reproducing the observed CD/CH abundance ratio of 0.016 suggests that it reflects `warm deuterium chemistry' (which ensues in moderately warm conditions of the interstellar medium) and illustrates the potential use of the CD/CH ratio in constraining the gas temperatures of the envelope gas clouds it probes., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy & Astrophysics (14 pages, 11 figures and 7 tables including Appendix)

Interpretation of resolved polarized images of black holes by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) requires predictions of the polarized emission observable by an Earth-based instrument for a particular model of the black hole accretion system. Such predictions are generated by general relativistic radiative transfer (GRRT) codes, which integrate the equations of polarized radiative transfer in curved spacetime. A selection of ray-tracing GRRT codes used within the EHT collaboration is evaluated for accuracy and consistency in producing a selection of test images, demonstrating that the various methods and implementations of radiative transfer calculations are highly consistent. When imaging an analytic accretion model, we find that all codes produce images similar within a pixel-wise normalized mean squared error (NMSE) of 0.012 in the worst case. When imaging a snapshot from a cell-based magnetohydrodynamic simulation, we find all test images to be similar within NMSEs of 0.02, 0.04, 0.04, and 0.12 in Stokes I, Q, U , and V respectively. We additionally find the values of several image metrics relevant to published EHT results to be in agreement to much better precision than measurement uncertainties., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We report a trigonometric parallax measurement of 22 GHz water masers in the massive star-forming region G034.43+0.24 as part of the Bar and Spiral Structure Legacy (BeSSeL) Survey using the Very Long Baseline Array. The parallax is 0.330$\pm$50.018 mas, corresponding to a distance of $3.03^{+0.17}_{-0.16}$ kpc. This locates G034.43+0.24 near the inner edge of the Sagittarius spiral arm and at one end of a linear distribution of massive young stars which cross nearly the full width of the arm. The measured 3-dimensional motion of G034.43+0.24 indicates a near-circular Galactic orbit. The water masers display arc-like distributions, possibly bow shocks, associated with winds from one or more massive young stars.

Studying the physical and chemical processes leading to the formation of low-mass stars is crucial for understanding the origin of our Sun and the Solar System. In particular, analyzing the emission and absorption lines from molecules is a fundamental tool to obtain information on the kinematics and chemistry at the very early stages of star formation. In this work we aim to examine the spatial structures and molecular abundances of material surrounding the very well-known low-mass binary protostar IRAS 16293-2422 and the prestellar core 16293E, which are embedded in the Lynds 1689N dark cloud. We have used the LAsMA heterodyne array installed on the Atacama Pathfinder EXperiment (APEX) 12 meter submillimeter telescope to image a region of about 0.12x0.12pc$^2$ around IRAS 16293-2422 and 16293E and to study their molecular environment covering 45.6GHz in a frequency range from 277GHz to 375GHz. We have identified 144 transitions from 36 molecular species, including isotopologues. The maps reveal the envelope to have a complex morphology around the cloud cores and the emission peaks known as E1, E2, W1, W2, and HE2, including the outflow structure arising from IRAS 16293-2422. Using several transitions of para-H$_2$CO, we have derived new lower limits for the kinetic temperatures toward IRAS 16293-2422 and the surrounding emission peaks. Based on these temperatures, H$_2$ volume densities and column densities for all detected species were derived around the cloud cores and all emission peaks. Our new observations further confirm the scenario of an outflow arising from IRAS 16293-2422 interacting with the prestellar core 16293E. We observe a large-scale velocity gradient across the molecular cloud. Furthermore, we see clear chemical differences at the examined positions. The data suggests that emission peak W2 may be related to a colder dust source.

We present the first results from the Southern Hemisphere Parallax Interferometric Radio Astrometry Legacy Survey (\spirals): $10\mu$as-accurate parallaxes and proper motions for two southern hemisphere 6.7 GHz methanol masers obtained using the inverse MultiView calibration method. Using an array of radio telescopes in Australia and New Zealand, we measured the trigonometric parallax and proper motions for the masers associated with the star formation region G232.62+00.99 of $\pi = 0.610\pm0.011$~mas, $\mu_x=-2.266\pm0.021$~mas~y$^{-1}$ and $\mu_y=2.249\pm0.049$~mas~y$^{-1}$, which implies its distance to be $d=1.637\pm0.029$~kpc. These measurements represent an improvement in accuracy by more than a factor of 3 over the previous measurements obtained through Very Long Baseline Array observations of the 12~GHz methanol masers associated with this region. We also measure the trigonometric parallax and proper motion for G323.74--00.26 as $\pi = 0.364\pm0.009$~mas, $\mu_x=-3.239\pm0.025$~mas~y$^{-1}$ and $\mu_y=-3.976\pm0.039$~mas~y$^{-1}$, which implies a distance of $d=2.747\pm0.068$~kpc. These are the most accurate measurements of trigonometric parallax obtained for 6.7~GHz class II methanol masers to date. We confirm that G232.62+00.99 is in the Local arm and find that G323.74--00.26 is in the Scutum-Centaurus arm. Context: Supernovae (SNe) inject large amounts of energy and chemically enriched materials into their surrounding interstellar medium and, in some instances, into molecular clouds (MCs). The interaction of a supernova remnant (SNR) with a MC plays a crucial role in the evolution of the cloud's physical and chemical properties. Despite their importance, only a handful of studies have been made addressing the molecular richness in MCs impacted by SNRs. (Sub)millimter wavelength observations of SNR-MC can be used to build a census of their molecular richness, which in turn can motivate various chemical and physical models aimed at explaining the chemical evolution of the clouds. Aims: We carried out multi-molecule/multi-transition observations toward the region F abutting the SNR W28. We used the detected lines to constrain the physical conditions of this region. Methods: We used the APEX Telescope to observe molecular lines in the frequency from $213\rm{-}374\, \textrm{GHz}$. We used non-LTE RADEX modeling to interpret the observational data. Results: We detected emission from multiple molecular species, namely CH$_{3}$OH, H$_{2}$CO, SO, SiO, CN, CCH, NO, CS, HCO$^+$, HCN, HNC, N$_2$H$^+$, CO, and from isotopologues of some of them. We report the first detection of thermally excited (non-maser) CH$_{3}$OH emission toward a SNR. Employing non-LTE RADEX modeling of multiple H$_{2}$CO and CH$_{3}$OH lines, we constrain the kinetic temperature from 60 to 100$\,$K and the gas density from $9\times 10^{5}$ to $5\times 10^{6}\,\rm cm^{-3}$. We obtained an ortho-para ratio $\sim$2 for H$_{2}$CO, which indicates that formaldehyde is most likely formed on dust grain surfaces. Conclusions: Our results show that molecules as complex as H$_{2}$CO and CH$_{3}$OH can be detected in SNR-MC interactions. The 1.3deg (G1.3) and 1.6deg (G1.6) cloud complexes in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of our Galaxy have been proposed to possibly reside at the intersection region of the X1 and X2 orbits for several reasons. This includes the detection of co-spatial low- and high-velocity clouds, high velocity dispersion, high fractional molecular abundances of shock-tracing molecules, and kinetic temperatures that are higher than for usual CMZ clouds. We mapped both cloud complexes in molecular lines in the frequency range from 85 to 475GHz with the IRAM 30m and the APEX 12m telescopes. The kinematic structure of G1.3 reveals an `emission bridge' at intermediate velocities (~150km/s) connecting low-velocity (~100km/s) and high-velocity (~180km/s) gas and an overall fluffy shell-like structure. These may represent observational evidence of cloud-cloud interactions. Low- and high-velocity gas components in G1.6 do not show such evidence of interaction, suggesting that they are spatially separated. We selected three positions in each cloud complex for further analysis. Based on non-LTE modelling of an ensemble of CH3CN lines, we derived kinetic temperatures of 60-100K and H2 volume densities of 10$^4$-10$^5$cm-3 in both complexes. Molecular abundances relative to H2 suggest a similar chemistry of the two clouds, which is moreover similar to that of other GC clouds. We conclude that G1.3 may indeed exhibit signs of cloud-cloud interactions. We propose an interaction of gas that is accreted from the near-side dust lane to the CMZ, with gas pre-existing at this location. Low- and high-velocity components in G1.6 are rather coincidentally observed along the same line of sight. They may be associated with either overshot decelerated gas from the far-side dust line or actual CMZ gas and high-velocity gas moving on a dust lane. We present ALMA sub-kpc- to kpc-scale resolution observations of the [CII], CO(9-8), and OH$^{+}$\,($1_{1}$--$0_{1}$) lines along with their dust continuum emission toward the FIR luminous quasar SDSS J231038.88+185519.7 at $z = 6.0031$. The [CII] brightness follows a flat distribution with a Sersic index of 0.59. The CO(9-8) line and the dust continuum can be fit with an unresolved nuclear component and an extended Sersic component with a Sersic index of ~1. The dust temperature drops with distance from the center. The effective radius of the dust continuum is smaller than that of the line emission and the dust mass surface density, but is consistent with that of the star formation rate surface density. The OH$^{+}$\,($1_{1}$--$0_{1}$) line shows a P-Cygni profile with an absorption, which may indicate an outflow with a neutral gas mass of $(6.2\pm1.2)\times10^{8} M_{\odot}$ along the line of sight. We employed a 3D tilted ring model to fit the [CII] and CO(9-8) data cubes. The two lines are both rotation dominated and trace identical disk geometries and gas motions. We decompose the circular rotation curve measured from the kinematic model fit to the [CII] line into four matter components (black hole, stars, gas, and dark matter). The quasar-starburst system is dominated by baryonic matter inside the central few kiloparsecs. We constrain the black hole mass to be $2.97^{+0.51}_{-0.77}\times 10^{9}\,M_{\odot}$; this is the first time that the dynamical mass of a black hole has been measured at $z\sim6$. A massive stellar component (on the order of $10^{9}\,M_{\odot}$) may have already existed when the Universe was only ~0.93 Gyr old. The relations between the black hole mass and the baryonic mass of this quasar indicate that the central supermassive black hole may have formed before its host galaxy. [Abridged version. This White Paper summarises potential key science topics to be achieved with Thai National Radio Telescope (TNRT). The commissioning phase has started in mid 2022. The key science topics consist of "Pulsars and Fast Radio Bursts (FRBs)", "Star Forming Regions (SFRs)", "Galaxy and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGNs)", "Evolved Stars", "Radio Emission of Chemically Peculiar (CP) Stars", and "Geodesy", covering a wide range of observing frequencies in L/C/X/Ku/K/Q/W-bands (1-115 GHz). As a single-dish instrument, TNRT is a perfect tool to explore time domain astronomy with its agile observing systems and flexible operation. Due to its ideal geographical location, TNRT will significantly enhance Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) arrays, such as East Asian VLBI Network (EAVN), Australia Long Baseline Array (LBA), European VLBI Network (EVN), in particular via providing a unique coverage of the sky resulting in a better complete "uv" coverage, improving synthesized-beam and imaging quality with reducing side-lobes. We report measurements of the gravitationally lensed secondary image -- the first in an infinite series of so-called "photon rings" -- around the supermassive black hole M87* via simultaneous modeling and imaging of the 2017 Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) observations. The inferred ring size remains constant across the seven days of the 2017 EHT observing campaign and is consistent with theoretical expectations, providing clear evidence that such measurements probe spacetime and a striking confirmation of the models underlying the first set of EHT results. The residual diffuse emission evolves on timescales comparable to one week. We are able to detect with high significance a southwestern extension consistent with that expected from the base of a jet that is rapidly rotating in the clockwise direction. This result adds further support to the identification of the jet in M87* with a black hole spin-driven outflow, launched via the Blandford-Znajek process. We present three revised estimates for the mass of M87* based on identifying the modeled thin ring component with the bright ringlike features seen in simulated images, one of which is only weakly sensitive to the astrophysics of the emission region. All three estimates agree with each other and previously reported values. Our strongest mass constraint combines information from both the ring and the diffuse emission region, which together imply a mass-to-distance ratio of $4.20^{+0.12}_{-0.06}~\mu{\rm as}$ and a corresponding black hole mass of $(7.13\pm0.39)\times10^9M_\odot$, where the error on the latter is now dominated by the systematic uncertainty arising from the uncertain distance to M87*.

Context. HCN is the most abundant molecule after H$_{2}$ and CO in the circumstellar envelopes (CSEs) of carbon-rich asymptotic giant branch (AGB) stars. Its rotational lines within vibrationally excited states are exceptional tracers of the innermost region of C-rich CSEs. Aims. We aim to constrain the physical conditions of CSEs of C-rich stars using thermal lines of the HCN molecule. Additionally, we also search for new HCN masers and probe the temporal variations for HCN masers, which should shed light on their pumping mechanisms. Methods. We observed 16 C-rich AGB stars in various HCN rotational transitions within the ground and 12 vibrationally excited states with the APEX 12 m submillimeter telescope. Results. We detect 68 vibrationally excited HCN lines from 13 C-rich stars, including 39 thermal transitions and 29 maser lines, which suggests that vibrationally excited HCN lines are ubiquitous in C-rich stars. Population diagrams constructed, for two objects from the sample, for thermal transitions from different vibrationally excited states give excitation temperature around 800-900 K, confirming that they arise from the hot innermost regions of CSEs (i.e., r<20$R_{*}$). Among the detected masers, 23 are newly detected, and the results expand the total number of known HCN masers lines toward C-rich stars by 47%. In particular, the J=2-1 (0, 3$^{1e}$, 0), J=3-2 (0, 2, 0), J=4-3 (0, 1$^{1f}$, 0) masers are detected in an astronomical source for the first time. Our observations confirm temporal variations of the 2-1 (0, 1$^{1e}$, 0) maser on a timescale of a few years. Our analysis of the data suggests that all detected HCN masers are unsaturated. A gas kinetic temperature of ${\gtrsim}$700K and an H$_{2}$ number density of >10$^{8}$cm$^{-3}$ are required to excite the HCN masers. Using the high angular resolution provided by the ALMA interferometre we want to resolve the COM emission in the hot molecular core Sagittarius B2(N1) and thereby shed light on the desorption process of Complex Organic Molecules (COMs) in hot cores. We use data taken as part of the 3 mm spectral line survey Re-exploring Molecular Complexity with ALMA (ReMoCA) to investigate the morphology of COM emission in Sagittarius B2(N1). Spectra of ten COMs are modelled under the assumption of LTE and population diagrams are derived for positions at various distances to the south and west from the continuum peak. Based on this analysis, resolved COM rotation temperature and COM abundance profiles are derived. Based on the morphology, a rough separation into O- and N-bearing COMs can be done. Temperature profiles are in agreement with expectations of protostellar heating of an envelope with optically thick dust. Abundance profiles reflect a similar trend as seen in the morphology and, to a great extent, agree with results of astrochemical models that, besides the co-desorption with water, predict that O-bearing COMs are mainly formed on dust grain surfaces at low temperatures while at least some N-bearing COMs and CH$_3$CHO are substantially formed in the gas phase at higher temperatures. Our observational results, in comparison with model predictions, suggest that COMs that are exclusively or to a great extent formed on dust grains desorb thermally at ~100 K from the grain surface likely alongside water. Non-zero abundance values below ~100 K suggest that another desorption process is at work at these low temperatures: either non-thermal desorption or partial thermal desorption related to lower binding energies experienced by COMs in the outer, water-poor ice layers. The dynamics of ionized gas around the W33 Main ultracompact HII region is studied using observations of hydrogen radio recombination lines and a detailed multiwavelength characterization of the massive star-forming region W33 Main is performed. We used the Giant Meterwave Radio Telescope (GMRT) to observe the H167$\alpha$ recombination line at 1.4 GHz at an angular resolution of 10 arcsec, and Karl. G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) data acquired in the GLOSTAR survey to study the dynamics of ionized gas. We also observed the radio continuum at 1.4 GHz and 610 MHz with the GMRT and used GLOSTAR 4$-$8 GHz continuum data to characterize the nature of the radio emission. In addition, archival data from submillimeter to near-infrared wavelengths were used to study the dust emission and identify YSOs in the W33 Main star-forming region. The radio recombination lines were detected at good signal to noise in the GLOSTAR data, while the H167$\alpha$ radio recombination line was marginally detected with the GMRT. The spectral index of radio emission in the region determined from GMRT and GLOSTAR shows the emission to be thermal in the entire region. Along with W33 Main, an arc-shaped diffuse continuum source, G12.81$-$0.22, was detected with the GMRT data. The GLOSTAR recombination line data reveal a velocity gradient across W33 Main and G12.81$-$0.22. The electron temperature is found to be 6343 K and 4843 K in W33 Main and G12.81$-$0.22, respectively. The physical properties of the W33 Main molecular clump were derived by modeling the dust emission using data from the ATLASGAL and Hi-GAL surveys and they are consistent with the region being a relatively evolved site of massive star formation. The gas dynamics and physical properties of G12.81$-$0.22 are consistent with the HII region being in an evolved phase and its expansion on account of the pressure difference is slowing down.

The nature and origin of the molecular gas component located in the circumstellar vicinity of $\eta$ Carinae are still far from being completely understood. Here, we present Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array (ALMA) CO(3$-$2) observations with a high angular resolution ($\sim$0.15$''$), and a great sensitivity that are employed to reveal the origin of this component in $\eta$ Carinae. These observations reveal much higher velocity ($-$300 to $+$270 km s$^{-1}$) blue and redshifted molecular thermal emission than previously reported, which we associate with the lobes of the Homunculus Nebula, and that delineates very well the innermost contours of the red- and blue-shifted lobes likely due by limb brightening. The inner contour of the redshifted emission was proposed to be a {\it disrupted torus}, but here we revealed that it is at least part of the molecular emission originated from the lobes and/or the expanding equatorial skirt. On the other hand, closer to systemic velocities ($\pm$100 km s$^{-1}$), the CO molecular gas traces an inner butterfly-shaped structure that is also revealed at NIR and MIR wavelengths as the region in which the shielded dust resides. (Abridged) In this paper, we investigate the physical conditions of [CI]-traced gas in high-mass star-forming regions by analyzing APEX [CI] 492 GHz single-pointing observations of the ATLASGAL Top100 sources along with other multi-wavelength data. Our 98 sources are clearly detected in [CI] 492 GHz emission, and the observed integrated intensities and line widths tend to increase toward evolved stages of star formation. In addition to these "main" components that are associated with the Top100 sample, 41 emission and two absorption features are identified by their velocities toward 28 and two lines of sight respectively as "secondary" components. The secondary components have systematically smaller integrated intensities and line widths than the main components. We found that [CI] 492 GHz and 13CO(2-1) are well correlated with the 13CO(2-1)-to-[CI] 492 GHz integrated intensity ratio varying from 0.2 to 5.3. In addition, we derived the H2-to-[CI] conversion factor, X(CI), by dividing 870 micron-based H2 column densities by the observed [CI] 492 GHz integrated intensities and found that X(CI) ranges from 2.3e20 to 1.3e22 with a median of 1.7e21. In contrast to the strong correlation with 13CO(2-1), [CI] 492 GHz has a scattered relation with the 870 micron-traced molecular gas. Finally, we performed LTE and non-LTE analyses of the [CI] 492 GHz and 809 GHz data for a subset of the Top100 sample and inferred that [CI] emission likely originates from warm (kinetic temperature > 60 K), optically thin (opacity < 0.5), and highly pressurized (thermal pressure ~ e5 to e8 K/cm3) regions., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

We present a catalog of radio sources of the M 17 region based on deep X band radio observations centered at 10 GHz obtained with the Jansky Very Large Array in the A configuration. We detect a total of 194 radio sources, 12 of them extended and 182 compact. We find that a significant fraction (at least 40% in our catalog) have suspected gyrosynchrotron emission associated with stellar coronal emission. By comparing the radio luminosities of our sources with their X ray counterparts, when available, we find that they are underluminous in X rays with respect to the G\"udel Benz relation, but a correlation with a similar slope is obtained provided that only sources with evident non thermal nature are selected from the sample compiled for the Orion Nebula Cluster (ONC) and M 17. The comparison of M 17 with the ONC and NGC 6334D-F leads to a similar luminosity function for the three regions, at least for the more luminous sources. However, the radio sources in M 17 are three times more numerous compared to the other regions at a given luminosity and their spatial distribution differs from that of Orion. Moreover, an arc-shaped structure of 40$"$ in extent is observed in our map, identified previously as an ionizing front, with the cometary Hyper Compact source UC1 at its focus. The High Energy Stereoscopic System (H.E.S.S.) observatory has carried a deep survey of the Galactic plane, in the course of which the existence of a significant number of ($\sim$ 78) TeV $\gamma$-ray sources was confirmed, many of which remain unidentified. HESS J1828-099 is a point-like (Gaussian stand. dev. $<$ 0.07$^{\circ}$) unidentified source among the 17 confirmed point-like sources in the H.E.S.S. Galactic Plane Survey (HGPS) catalog. This source is also unique because it does not seem to have any apparent association with any object detected at other wavelengths. We investigate the nature and association of HESS J1828-099 with multi-wavelength observational data. A high mass X-Ray binary (HMXB) - comprising of pulsar XTE J1829-098 and a companion Be star - has been observed earlier in the X-ray and infrared bands, 14$'$ away from HESS J1828-099. With 12 years of $\textit{Fermi}$-LAT $\gamma$-ray data, we explore the possibility of 4FGL J1830.2-1005 being the GeV counterpart of HESS J1828-099. Within the RXTE confidence region, a steep spectrum ($\alpha_{radio}$ = - 0.746 $\pm$ 0.284), plausible counterpart is detected in data from existing radio frequency surveys. In this letter, we probe for the first time using multi-wavelength data, whether HESS J1828-099, 4FGL J1830.2-1005 and the HMXB system have a common origin. Detecting molecular line emission from classical nova remnants has the potential of revealing information on the composition of the ejecta, in particular, it can deliver accurate isotopic ratios in the matter processed by a thermonuclear runaway. We conducted searches toward more than 100 classical novae for emission in lines of the CO or HCN molecules using single-dish telescopes and interferometric arrays at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths. The survey demonstrates that classical novae, young or old, are not strong sources of molecular emission at submillimeter and millimeter wavelengths. Additionally, we mapped CO emission around Nova Persei 1901 (GK Per), earlier claimed to be circumstellar in origin. Our measurements indicate that the observed emission is from the interstellar medium. Although no molecular emission at millimeter and submillimeter wavelengths has been found in classical novae, it is still likely that some will be detected with high-sensitivity interferometers such as ALMA., Comment: comments welcome, submitted to A&A

Along several sight lines within the Milky Way ArH+ has been ubiquitously detected with only one detection in extragalactic environments, namely along two sight lines in the red shift z=0.89 absorber towards the lensed blazar PKS 1830-211. Being formed in predominantly atomic gas by reactions between Ar+, which were initially ionised by cosmic rays and molecular hydrogen, ArH+ has been shown to be an excellent tracer of atomic gas as well as the impinging cosmic-ray ionisation rates. In this work, we attempt to extend the observations of ArH+in extragalactic sources to examine its use as a tracer of the atomic interstellar medium (ISM) in these galaxies. We report the detection of ArH+ towards two luminous nearby galaxies, NGC 253 and NGC 4945, and the non-detection towards Arp 220 observed using the SEPIA660 receiver on the APEX 12 m telescope. In addition, the two sidebands of this receiver allowed us to observe the NKaKc=1_1,0-1_0,1 transitions of another atomic gas tracer p-H2O+ at 607.227 GHz with the ArH+ line, simultaneously. We modelled the optically thin spectra of both species and compared their observed line profiles with that of other well-known atomic gas tracers such as OH+ and o-H2O+ and diffuse and dense molecular gas tracers HF and CO, respectively. By further assuming that the observed absorption from the ArH+, OH+, and H2O+ molecules are affected by the same flux of cosmic rays, we investigate the properties of the different cloud layers based on a steady-state analysis of the chemistry of these three species., Comment: Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics 16 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables

We present Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) S- (2--4 GHz), C- (4--8 GHz), and X-band (8--12 GHz) continuum observations toward seven radio-loud quasars at $z>5$. This sample has previously been found to exhibit spectral peaks at observed-frame frequencies above $\sim$1 GHz. We also present upgraded Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (uGMRT) band-2 (200 MHz), band-3 (400 MHz), and band-4 (650 MHz) radio continuum observations toward eight radio-loud quasars at $z>5$, selected from our previous GMRT survey, in order to sample their low-frequency synchrotron emission. Combined with archival radio continuum observations, all ten targets show evidence for spectral turnover. The turnover frequencies are $\sim$1--50 GHz in the rest frame, making these targets gigahertz-peaked-spectrum (GPS) or high-frequency-peaker (HFP) candidates. For the nine well-constrained targets with observations on both sides of the spectral turnover, we fit the entire radio spectrum with absorption models associated with synchrotron self-absorption and free-free absorption (FFA). Our results show that FFA in an external inhomogeneous medium can accurately describe the observed spectra for all nine targets, which may indicate an FFA origin for the radio spectral turnover in our sample. As for the complex spectrum of J114657.79+403708.6 at $z=5.00$ with two spectral peaks, it may be caused by multiple components (i.e., core-jet) and FFA by the high-density medium in the nuclear region. However, we cannot rule out the spectral turnover origin of variability. Based on our radio spectral modeling, we calculate the radio loudness $R_{2500\rm\, \AA}$ for our sample, which ranges from 12$^{+1}_{-1}$ to 674$^{+61}_{-51}$., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A

OB star clusters originate from parsec-scale massive molecular clumps. We aim to understand the evolution of temperature and density structures on the intermediate-scale ($\lesssim$0.1-1 pc) extended gas of massive clumps. We performed $\sim$0.1 pc resolution observations (SMA+APEX) of multiple molecular line tracers (e.g., CH$_{3}$CCH, H$_{2}$CS, CH$_{3}$CN, CH$_{3}$OH) which cover a wide range of excitation conditions, towards a sample of eight massive clumps. Based on various radiative transfer models, we constrain the gas temperature and density structures and establish an evolutionary picture, aided by a spatially-dependent virial analysis and abundance ratios of multiple species. We determine temperature radial profiles varying between 30-200 K over a continuous scale, from the center of the clumps out to 0.3-0.4 pc radii. The clumps' radial gas density profiles, described by radial power-laws with slopes between -0.6 and $\sim$-1.5, are steeper for more evolved sources, as suggested by results based on both dust continuum, representing the bulk of the gas ($\sim$10$^{4}$ cm$^{-3}$), and CH$_{3}$OH lines probing the dense gas ($\gtrsim$10$^{6}$-10$^{8}$ cm$^{-3}$) regime. The density contrast between the dense gas and the bulk gas increases with evolution, and may be indicative of spatially and temporally varying star formation efficiencies. The radial profiles of the virial parameter show a global variation towards a sub-virial state as the clump evolves. The line-widths decline with increasing radius around the central core region and increase in the outer envelope, with a slope shallower than the case of the supersonic turbulence ($\,\propto\,$$r^{0.5}$) and the subsonic Kolmogorov scaling ($\,\propto\,$$r^{0.33}$). In the context of clump evolution, we also find that the abundance ratios of [CCH]/[CH$_{3}$OH] and [CH$_{3}$CN]/[CH$_{3}$OH] show correlations with clump $L/M$., Comment: Accepted by A&A; 46 pages, 33 figures incl. appendices; abstract abridged to meet arxiv requirements
