Anomalies in mood, thinking, work, bodily functions, emotions, social interactions, and general behavior are frequently related to mental disorders. A strong correlation has been found between affective disorders, mental illnesses, and physiological reactions from the brain, muscles, heart, eyes, and skin. Understanding multidisciplinary open research challenges, including the combination of behavioral sciences, computer science, machine learning, psychology, and sociology, could potentially reveal new interdisciplinary research domains. In the purview of previously stated arguments, this study intends to investigate the physiological and behavioral signals could be used for machine learning-based detection of mental disorders. Subsequently, identification of machine learning algorithms to exploit these modalities for detecting mental disorders were studied. This study presents a systematic literature review to promulgate state-of-the-art computational methods and technologies facilitating the automated detection of affective disorders. The relevant literature between 2010 and 2022 has been studied for this survey. Recommendations of Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) model were adopted for the identification, screening, validating, and inclusion of research literature. The study concluded the fact that self-diagnosis tools for detecting mental disorders, like questionnaires and rating scales, produce inconsistent results. Further, there are no standard baselines for mental disorders. This situation mandates a multi-faceted approach that may utilize physiological signals, behavioral patterns, and even data obtained from various online portals like social media to efficiently and effectively detect mental disorders' prevalence, type, and severity. Debates on the distinction between religious experience and mental disorder tend to assume, rather than argue for, the existence of unique types of experience: the religious and the psychopathological. This paper interrogates this approach to the problem. It deconstructs the distinction by examining what the distinction is about beyond the terms in which it is presented and whether it matters who is trying to make it. A key idea is that one's standpoint in the debate—that is, whether one adopts a religious or a secular standpoint—determines what they can say about the distinction. This leads to the central argument of the first part of the paper: The distinction between religious experience and mental disorder can only be invoked from a secular standpoint but can only be clarified from a religious standpoint. In other words, if you have the grounds to invoke it, you cannot have the tools to clarify it; and if you have the tools to clarify it, you do not have the grounds to invoke it. In the second part, the paper follows through the implications, from a secular standpoint, of accepting this argument. It appeals to the politics of difference and to mental health activism to argue against the binary view whereby mental distress is either illness and incapacity or a path to purpose and identity. Background and Objective: We examined the possibility that reactions to climate change take two forms: distress, which may be adaptive, and symptoms of mental disorders, which may not be. Design and Method: In a national sample of Polish adults (n = 1133), we measured climate change distress (experiencing unpleasant emotions and feelings due to climate change), climate-related symptoms of mental disorders (e.g., problems sleeping and problems working and planning), generalized anxiety, and depression. Results: Zero-inflated Poisson regression analyses of the occurrence of climate-related symptoms of mental disorders found two latent classes: People who experienced symptoms of the disorder and those who did not. For all eight symptoms, climate change distress predicted membership in the latent class of people who experienced a symptom, whereas how often people in the non-zero latent class experienced each symptom was positively related to generalized anxiety but was not related to distress or depression. Conclusions: These results suggest that reactions to climate change take two forms. Some people do not experience climate change-related symptoms of mental disorders, and some do. People who experience symptoms have higher levels of climate change distress, and the frequency with which they experience these symptoms is determined by their dispositional, generalized anxiety. This study explained Nice Girl syndrome in Elizabeth Gaskell's Ruth to prevent mental disorders. A mental disorder is a clinically significant disruption in cognition, emotion regulation, or behaviour. There are several mental disorders, including Nice Girl syndrome. Beverly Engel's Nice Girl syndrome was the study's grand theory. The Nice Girl Syndrome theory was used to analyze Elizabeth Gaskell's Ruth's female characters' thoughts and behaviour. This study revealed seven of ten signs of Nice Girl syndrome, such as "other people's feelings and needs are more important than her own", "she believes that she will be treated nice and fair as long as she is nice and fair", "other people thought about herself is more important than her self-esteem, health, and safety", "she will be accepted and loved if she is good and perfect", "she believes that she does not have the right to stand up for herself or act on her behalf", "she believed that anger is a destructive emotion and should not be expressed directly to those with whom she was angry", and "she believes that it is better to avoid conflict at all costs". Background and Hypothesis Schizophrenia is a mental disorder usually presented in adulthood that affects roughly 0.3 percent of the population. The disease contributes to more than 13 million years lived with disability the global burden of disease. The current study aimed to provide new insights into the quality of care in Schizophrenia via the implementation of the newly introduced quality of care index (QCI) into the existing data. Study Design The data from the global burden of disease database was used for schizophrenia. Two secondary indices were calculated from the available indices and used in a principal component analysis to develop a proxy of QCI for each country. The QCI was then compared between different sociodemographic index (SDI) and ages. To assess the disparity in QCI between the sexes, the gender disparity ratio (GDR) was also calculated and analyzed in different ages and SDIs. Study Results The global QCI proxy score has improved between 1990 and 2019 by roughly 13.5%. Concerning the gender disparity, along with a rise in overall GDR the number of countries having a GDR score of around one has decreased which indicates an increase in gender disparity regarding quality of care of schizophrenia. Bhutan and Singapore had 2 of the highest QCIs in 2019 while also showing GDR scores close to one. Conclusions While the overall conditions in the quality of care have improved, significant disparities and differences still exist between different countries, genders, and ages in the quality of care regarding schizophrenia. This paper will investigate justice requirements that a pluralist stance on concepts of mental disorder should meet for use on a global scale. This is important given that different concepts of mental disorder are connected to particular interventions which may be more or less successful in specific contexts. While taking a broadly normative view on mental disorders, I will describe relevant concepts in a more fine grained manner, referring to their connections to particular approaches to biology, the self, or community. Drawing on research on epistemic injustice, I highlight the requirement that the set of multiple concepts be sufficiently flexible to enable the participation of those possessing relevant local knowledge. Using insights from health justice, I point out that the set of concepts should be conducive to distributive and procedural justice with regard to mental health and should support interventions on social determinants of health. These requirements apply to two dimensions of pluralism: regarding what concepts to include and how to relate them to one another. I conclude by explaining how an ontology of partial overlaps connected to a concept of health as metaphysically social can help address the challenges arising particularly regarding the latter dimension. Background: Mental illness is one of the most severe, chronic, and disabling public health problems that affects patients’ Quality of life (QoL). Improving the QoL for people with mental illness is one of the most critical steps in stopping disease progression and avoiding complications of mental illness. Therefore, we aimed to assess the QoL and its determinants in patients with mental illness in outpatient clinics in Northwest Ethiopia in 2023. Methods: A facility-based cross-sectional study was conducted among people with mental illness in an outpatient clinic in Ethiopia. The sampling interval was decided by dividing the total study participants who had a follow-up appointment during the data collection period (2400), by the total sample size 638, with the starting point selected by lottery method. The intervieweradministered WHOQOL BREF-26 tool was used to measure the quality of life (QoL) of people with mental illness. The domains of QoL were identified, and indirect and direct effects of variables were calculated using structural equation modelling with SPSS-28 and Amos-28 software. A p-value of < 0.05 and a 95% CI were used to evaluate statistical significance. Results: A total of 636 (99.7%) participants agreed to participate and completed the data collection. The mean score of overall QoL of people with mental illness in the outpatient clinic was 49.6 ± 10 Sd. The highest QoL was found in the physical health domain (50.67 ± 9.5 Sd), and the lowest mean QoL was found in the psychological health domain (48.41 ± 10 Sd). Rural residence, drug nonadherence, suicidal ideation, not getting counselling, moderate or severe subjective severity, family does not participate in patient care and a family history of mental illness had an indirect negative effect on QoL. Alcohol use and psychological health domain had direct positive effect on QoL. Furthermore, objective severity of illness, having low self-esteem, and having history of mental illness in the family had both direct and indirect effect on QoL. Furthermore, sociodemographic factors (rural residence, illiterate educational status, not married marital status), social support-related factors (poor self-esteem, family not participating in patient care), substance use factors (alcohol use, tobacco use) and clinical factors (high objective and subjective severity of illness, not getting counselling, suicidal ideation, higher number of episodes, comorbid illness, family history of mental illness, poor drug adherence) directly and indirectly affected QoL. Conclusions: In this study, the QoL of people with mental illness was poor, with the psychological health domain the most affected. Sociodemographic factors, social support-related factors, drug use factors, and clinical factors, directly and indirectly affected QoL through the mediator variables of physical health domains, psychological health domains, social relation health domains, and environmental health domains. In order to improve the QoL of people with mental illnesses, we recommend that emphasis be given to addressing the QoL of those with mental illness, including the development of policy and practice responses that address the above identified factors. Media portrayal of mental disorders has a significant impact on awareness and stigma. Given the high prevalence of depression and anxiety as mental disorders, it is crucial to understand how they are represented. This scoping review aimed to map the existing literature on the portrayal of depression and anxiety in mainstream and social media. A comprehensive search was conducted in PubMed and PsychInfo, resulting in the inclusion of 20 records that predominantly examined social media and newspapers. Findings indicate that social media discussions on depression were mostly supportive and non‐stigmatising. Public figures and role models played a significant role in encouraging open communication. Research on newspapers and other media forms yielded mixed results yet leaning towards positive portrayals. Limited studies explored anxiety portrayal. While acknowledging potential limitations in generalisability, this review emphasises the importance of accurately depicting mental health in media, particularly on social media platforms, while highlighting the need for broader investigations into anxiety representation. People living with mental illness experience poorer oral health outcomes compared to the general population, yet little is known about their oral health knowledge, attitudes, and practices. The aim of this mixed-methods systematic review was to synthesise evidence regarding oral health knowledge, attitudes, and practices of people living with mental illness to inform preventative strategies and interventions. Database searches were conducted in PubMed, MEDLINE, PsycINFO, CINAHL, ProQuest, and Scopus with no limitations placed on the year of study. All studies available in the English language, that explored the oral health knowledge, attitudes, and/or practices of people with a mental illness were included. Articles were excluded if they primarily pertained to intellectual disability, behavioural and psychological symptoms of dementia, drug and alcohol or substance use, or eating disorders. A thematic synthesis was undertaken of 36 studies (26 high-moderate quality), resulting in 3 themes and 9 sub-themes. Study participants ranged from n = 7 to n = 1095 and aged between 15–83 years with most having a diagnosis of schizophrenia, schizoaffective, or bipolar affective disorder. People diagnosed with a mental illness were found to have limited oral health knowledge, particularly regarding the effects of psychotropic medication. Various barriers to oral health care were identified, including high dental costs, the negative impact of mental illness, dental fears, lack of priority, and poor communication with dental and health care providers. Study participants often displayed a reduced frequency of tooth brushing and dental visits. The findings highlight the potential for mental health care providers, oral health and dental professionals, mental health consumers, and carers to work together more closely to improve oral health outcomes for people with mental illness. Background: Mental disorders are a significant contributor to disease burden. However, there is a large treatment gap for common mental disorders worldwide. This systematic review summarizes the factors associated with mental health service use. Methods: PubMed, Scopus, and the Web of Science were searched for articles describing the predictors of and barriers to mental health service use among people with mental disorders from January 2012 to August 2023. The initial search yielded 3230 articles, 2366 remained after removing duplicates, and 237 studies remained after the title and abstract screening. In total, 40 studies met the inclusion and exclusion criteria. Results: Middle-aged participants, females, Caucasian ethnicity, and higher household income were more likely to access mental health services. The use of services was also associated with the severity of mental symptoms. The association between employment, marital status, and mental health services was inconclusive due to limited studies. High financial costs, lack of transportation, and scarcity of mental health services were structural factors found to be associated with lower rates of mental health service use. Attitudinal barriers, mental health stigma, and cultural beliefs also contributed to the lower rates of mental health service use. Conclusion: This systematic review found that several socio-demographic characteristics were strongly associated with using mental health services. Policymakers and those providing mental health services can use this information to better understand and respond to inequalities in mental health service use and improve access to mental health treatment. Aims Methods Results Conclusion Estimates of the occurrence of bipolar disorder among adolescents vary from country to country and from time to time. Long delays from first symptoms to diagnosis of bipolar disorder have been suggested. Studies among adults suggest increased mortality, particularly due to suicide and cardiovascular diseases. We set out to study the prognosis of adolescent onset bipolar disorder in terms of rehospitalizations, diagnostic stability, and mortality.The study comprised a register‐based follow‐up of all adolescents admitted to psychiatric inpatient care for the first time in their lives at age 13–17 during the period 1980–2010. They were followed up in the National Care Register for Health Care and Causes of death registers until 31 December 2014.Incidence of bipolar disorder among 13‐ to 17‐year‐old adolescents over the whole study period was 2.8 per 100, 000 same aged adolescents, and across decades, the incidence increased six‐fold. Patients with bipolar disorder during their first‐ever inpatient treatment were rehospitalized more often than those treated for other reasons. Conversion from bipolar disorder to other diagnoses was far more common than the opposite. Mortality did not differ between those firstdiagnosed with bipolar disorder and those treated for other reasons.The incidence of adolescent onset bipolar disorder has increased across decades. The present study does not call for attention to delayed diagnosis of bipolar disorder. Adolescent onset bipolar disorders are severe disorders that often require rehospitalization, but diagnostic stability is modest. Mortality is comparable to that in other equally serious disorders. Different care networks in Spain evaluate the co-occurrence of substance use disorders (SUD) and other mental disorders (OMDs). This study aimed to explore the differences in prevalence, sociodemographic and clinical profile, pharmacological treatment, and gender perspective of the co-occurrence of SUD and OMD between specific addiction treatment networks and mental health networks. This is an observational, cross-multicenter study with a randomized sample of patients under treatment for SUD or OMDs in different autonomous communities of Spain (N = 1783). Sixty-seven health professionals completed an ad hoc online questionnaire, collecting sociodemographic variables with patients diagnosed with SUD and OMDs, and their pharmacological treatments. The findings revealed a high prevalence of OMD in patients treated for SUD (71%) and those for OMD diagnosed with SUD (59%). Specific relationships between the SUDs and OMDs were identified. In networks treating SUDs, the increase in treatment for OMDs was widespread. However, the addition of SUD treatments in mental health networks was less frequent than expected. In addition, an elevated benzodiazepine prescription was detected in both settings. Some possible gender biases in treatments were found. This study provides preliminary information on the coexistence in routine clinical practice of addictive disorders and other mental disorders in Spain. The results revealed that the treatments provided are inefficient for SUDs in patients treated in mental health settings. Furthermore, a high prescription of anxiolytics and differences by sex are shown. These findings may contribute to adapting the treatment response with greater precision and effectiveness. The aim of this study was to compare the metacognition characteristics and social functionality of patients with different mental disorders. The sample of the study consists of 280 patients with mental disorders. Healthy individuals in the control group consisted of 50 individuals who were not diagnosed with any mental disorder. The sample consisted of 330 individuals. Personal information form, Metacognition Questionnaire-30 (MCQ-30), and Social Functioning Scale (SFS) were used to collect the data. Considering the lowest and highest scores that can be obtained from the MCQ-30 and SFS scales, it was found that all patients with mental disorders have a pathological metacognitive impairment above the average in terms of the middle score on the MCQ-30 and social functioning below average in terms of the middle score on the SFS. Pathological metacognitive impairment was found to be the highest in depression patients and the lowest in schizophrenia/psychosis patients. There was difference between the groups in terms of pathological metacognitive impairment (p < 0.05). The group with the most impaired social functioning was schizophrenia/psychosis, and difference was found between the different mental disorders (p < 0.05). It was found that there was a negative relationship between the pathological metacognitive impairment and the social functioning of the patients with anxiety disorders and control group (p = 0.001). No significant relationship was found between metacognitive impairment and social functionality of patients with other mental disorders (p > 0.05). Numerous studies have evidenced that neuropsychiatric disorders (mental illness and emotional disturbances) with aggression (or violence) pose a significant challenge to public health and contribute to a substantial economic burden worldwide. Especially, social disorganization (or social inequality) associated with childhood adversity has long-lasting effects on mental health, increasing the risk of developing neuropsychiatric disorders. Intestinal bacteria, functionally as an endocrine organ and a second brain, release various immunomodulators and bioactive compounds directly or indirectly regulating a host's physiological and behavioral homeostasis. Under various social challenges, stress-induced dysbiosis increases gut permeability causes serial reactions: releasing neurotoxic compounds, leading to neuroinflammation and neuronal injury, and eventually neuropsychiatric disorders associated with aggressive, violent, or impulsive behavior in humans and various animals via a complex bidirectional communication of the microbiota–gut–brain (MGB) axis. The dysregulation of the MGB axis has also been recognized as one of the reasons for the prevalence of social stress-induced injurious behaviors (feather pecking, aggression, and cannibalistic pecking) in chickens. However, existing knowledge of preventing and treating these disorders in both humans and chickens is not well understood. In previous studies, we developed a non-mammal model in an abnormal behavioral investigation by rationalizing the effects of gut microbiota on injurious behaviors in chickens. Based on our earlier success, the perspective article outlines the possibility of reducing stress-induced injurious behaviors in chickens through modifying gut microbiota via cecal microbiota transplantation, with the potential for providing a biotherapeutic rationale for preventing injurious behaviors among individuals with mental disorders via restoring gut microbiota diversity and function. In France, Mental Disorders (MD) are the second most common medical cause of unfitness-for-work notices. The main objective is to describe the MD causing permanent medically unfitness at the workstation. A cross-sectional multicenter survey was conducted among employees followed by 323 physicians from occupational health services of the South of France in 2017. The MD responsible for unfitness for the job were coded according to the ICD-10 nomenclature and their occupational origin was estimated by each physician. On 359,966 employees screened, 2,788 were unfitted. Among the 2,779 unfitness cases which were analysed, 985 were unfitted for MD. The incidence rate of unfitness for MD was 2.78 unfit per 1,000 employees followed. Representing 36.8% (985 cases) of all grounds for unfitness, MD were estimated to be work-related in 614 (63.6%) of cases. The main MD were 449 (45.6%) cases of major depressive episodes, 227 (23.0%) anxiety disorders and 131 (13.3%) recurrent depressive disorders. Their occupational origin was mentioned in 296 (67.3%), 168 (74.7%), 62 (49.6%) cases and the link with a Burnout (BO) in 166 (38.3%), 61 (27.9%) and 41 (34.2%) cases respectively among 364 all pathologies reported to a BO. Unfitness for MD was more common among women (ORa = 1.79 95% CI [1.50–2.13]), working in trade, transport, accommodation and catering (ORa = 1.47 95% CI [1.04–2.09]) and increase with age (ORa = 4.24 95% CI [2.73–6.60] for over 55). This paper addresses the Harmful Dysfunction Analysis of mental disorder. We argue that some mental conditions meet both of its criteria--the dysfunction criterion and the harm criterion-- and yet should not count as mental disorders because of their value. We contend that the harm criterion, by taking harm as a proxy for disvalue, is an inadequate normative criterion in these cases. Therefore, further ethical considerations should be included as a normative criterion.
