Purpose: The study investigates the moderating effect of personal resources, including optimism and resilience, on the link between fear of COVID-19 and perceptions of academic safety among university students in Ghana. Design/methodology/approach: A total of 618 students took part in the research by completing an online self-reported questionnaire. The respondents were chosen using a simple random sample method. The data was processed and analysed using IBM SPSS version 24 and SEM-PLS, respectively. Findings: Results reveal fear of COVID-19 positively influence students' perception of academic safety. Furthermore, both resilience and optimism mitigate the impact of fear of COVID-19 on students' perceptions of academic safety. Originality/value: This is the first study to examine personal resources as a moderator between fear of COVID-19 and students' perceptions of academic safety. Practical and theoretical implications are added to the text.

Purpose: The study examines a mediated, moderated process of students' intellectual engagement from optimism, academic self-efficacy and academic burnout. Design/methodology/approach: Five hundred and twenty-seven participants who completed a self-reported questionnaire were selected using a convenient sampling technique. PLSc was used to test the proposed hypotheses. Findings: Results showed that optimism positively affects students' intellectual engagement and academic self-efficacy. Additionally, academic self-efficacy correlates positively with students' intellectual engagement and further mediates the relationship between optimism and intellectual engagement. Finally, the moderation effect of academic burnout was positive and non-significant. Originality/value: This paper is among the first to have tested a model including optimism, academic self-efficacy, intellectual engagement and academic burnout in a university setup from a developing country perspective.

Purpose: The study examines a mediated mechanism for enhancing students' engagement i.e. peer, intellectual and academic engagement within a higher education setup via the interaction of hope and mindfulness. Design/methodology/approach: Data were conveniently collected using self-reported questionnaires from a sample of 542 students. PLSc-SEM was used to test the stated hypotheses. Findings: Results from the analysis showed hope and mindfulness positively predict student academic, peer and intellectual engagements. Furthermore, mindfulness positively mediates the effect of hope on academic, peer and intellectual engagements. Practical implications: This study demonstrates that management of higher institutions must develop effective and efficient policies targeted at enhancing students' hope and mindful awareness. Originality/value: This paper is the first to examine a model involving mindfulness, hope and peer, intellectual and academic engagement.

Purpose: The paper examined the mediating effect of meaningfulness of study on the relation between self-efficacy and academic programme satisfaction within higher education setup. Design/methodology/approach: A total of 376 randomly selected students took part in the study by completing a self-reported survey. Data were analysed using PLS-SEM. Findings: Results suggest self-efficacy and meaningfulness of studies positively predict student's satisfaction with academic programme. Besides, meaningfulness of study mediates the relation between self-efficacy and student's satisfaction of academic programme. Originality/value: This study is one of the first to provide empirical evidence of the influence of meaningfulness of studies on self-efficacy and student academic programme satisfaction in the higher education context.

Bullying in basic and secondary schools has received considerable research attention; empirical investigation of the phenomenon among university students has, however, been overlooked. There is a paucity of such studies in African universities. This study examined the prevalence and forms of bullying in a Ghanaian technical university, as well as victims' characteristics. Four hundred and eighty-eight students completed self-administered questionnaires. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and the Mann Whitney and Kruskal-Wallis tests. The prevalence of bullying was high. Verbal and sexual harassment were commonly reported. Vulnerability to bullying was high among female students. This study adds to the scanty literature on the phenomenon in university settings. University administrators must confront bullying by instituting and subjecting faculty to disciplinary procedures and must punish culprits to create a congenial and non-threatening environment for academic work in universities.

This prospective study was designed to investigate the relationship between self-efficacy, autonomous motivation and engagement within a higher education setup. A convenient sample of 512 students participated in the study through the completion of self-reported questionnaires. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics and PLS-SEM. Results from the analysis showed self-efficacy and autonomous motivation enhances peer and intellectual engagement. Additionally, autonomous motivation positively mediates the effect of self-efficacy on both peer and intellectual engagement. The findings of the study provide important implication for management of higher education students. Management of higher education institutions must develop effective and efficient policies that assist students to develop and manage their self-efficacy.

This study examined the moderating role of mindfulness and resilience on the effects of academic stress and career anxiety on the well-being of hospitality students and their career intentions. A sample of 269 students selected using a simple random sampling technique completed a self-reported questionnaire. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics and partial least squares structural equation modeling. The findings show a negative effect of academic stress and career anxiety on the career intentions of hospitality students. However, mindfulness increases hospitality students' intention to work in the industry. The resilience of students minimized the negative effects of academic stress on their hospitality career intentions while enhancing their well-being. The theoretical and empirical contributions of the study were highlighted and directions for future research were also indicated. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This paper investigates differences in the prevalence of self-reported examination cheating behaviours and perception of peer cheating between enrolled students and graduates. A convenience sample of 344 respondents selected from a Ghanaian polytechnic completed self-administered questionnaires. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square test of independence and Mann Whitney test. "Permitting another student to copy your answers during an exam" was the topmost exam cheating method among students. Graduates were more likely than enrolled students to self-report higher examination cheating behaviours. Enrolled students were less likely than graduates to perceive higher levels of peer cheating. Future studies should consider using graduates in students' cheating studies in order to validate the results of the study. This study extends the extant literature on academic dishonesty as it provides insight on self-reported cheating between students and graduates.

Purpose: Academic misconduct has become an albatross on the management of higher education institutions with long-term ramification on developmental agenda of countries. The purpose of this paper is to examine the association between religiousness of students and examination cheating tendencies. Further, this paper explored the cheating methods, reasons for cheating and the relationship between perception of peer cheating and examination cheating propensity among students in Ghana. Design/methodology/approach: A cross-sectional research design was adopted for the study using questionnaires to collect data from 355 students in a three-year higher national diploma awarding technical university in Ghana. Descriptive statistics, Mann Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis tests were the main data analytical tools. Findings: Results of the study revealed that "fear of failure" was the leading reason driving students' examination cheating behaviours. Perception of peer cheating was related to levels of self-reported cheating whereas religious inclination of students was uncorrelated with the self-reported cheating behaviour of students. Practical implications: The findings of the study provide implication for management of higher education institutions. The academic counselling unit of higher education institutions should work to dispel students' overly sensitivity to end-of-semester examinations. Teachings of religious groups should highlight examination cheating as constituting violations of religious values and norms. Originality/value: This paper is one of the pioneers of examination cheating and religiosity relationship in Ghana's higher education settings. This study makes an additional contribution to the literature on the religiosity examination cheating nexus.

This paper applies bibliometric and integrative review approaches to examine the pattern of growth, conceptual and social structure of hospitality and tourism internship research using 167 articles retrieved from Scopus database published between 1986 and 2020. The contribution of journals, scholars, institutions, and countries in the production of hospitality and tourism internship research was assessed. Descriptive statistics of the bibliographic data was conducted using "Bibliometrix" tool whiles VOSviewer software was used for network analysis. Findings indicate that hospitality and tourism internship research is about three decades old however, the knowledge domain remains underdeveloped. Busby G, University of Queensland and the USA are the most productive author, institution and country, respectively in hospitality and internship research. Research efforts have focused on internships and students' attitudes toward hospitality work, benefits of internships to students, industry and institutions, and internship satisfaction. Purpose: The study aims to examine the moderating influence of perceived co-worker support in the nexus between compulsory citizenship behaviour, job involvement and social loafing amongst university interns. Design/methodology/approach: Four hundred and sixty-two) respondents took part in the study by completing a self-reported questionnaire distributed via online WhatsApp platform. The respondents were selected using multistage sampling technique. The data were processed and analysed using IBM SPSS version 24 and PLS-SEM, respectively. Findings: Results reveal interns' experience of compulsory citizenship behaviour positively influences their social loafing and negatively influences their job involvement. Furthermore, the support received from co-workers' reduces the negative influence of compulsory citizenship behaviour on interns' (1) social loafing and (2) job involvement. Research limitations: The study's main limitations have been identified as the type of organisation in which the internship was completed and the number of years of internship experience. Future research may seek to address this problem by obtaining data from a cohort that is categorised based on the nature of the organisation and duration of the internship. Practical implications: Perceived co-worker support has been found to reduce the negative effects of interns' compulsory citizenship behaviour on their job outcomes. It is recommended that organisations establish a supportive work environment to assist interns. This can be achieved through various means, such as engaging in team-building activities and assigning mentors, among other strategies. Originality/value: One of the first to have examined a model linking compulsory citizenship behaviour, job involvement, social loafing and perceived co-worker support amongst interns in a higher education environment. The study examined online learning anxiety and the consequences of COVID-19 induced parental job losses on the social support systems of hospitality and tourism students. An online questionnaire survey was used to collect data from 434 hospitality and tourism students across tertiary institutions in Ghana. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, independent samples t-test, and one-way analysis of variance. The results showed that students were most anxious about online learning, particularly the challenges of internet usage while family assistance was most available during the COVID-19 pandemic followed by support from people deemed special. Students who had their guardians losing their jobs during the pandemic were more nervous with online learning and reported lower levels of social support from family, friends, special relations, and the university. In this study, a bibliometric review of festival research is conducted to provide a valuable overview of the current state of the field, and in so doing, lays out a roadmap for future research. Based on hospitality-, tourism-, and leisure-related journals indexed in Scopus database, performance, relational and intellectual structure of festival scholarship are undertaken using Biblioshiny and VosViewer software to generate descriptive statistics and social networks structures of 955 articles. For almost five decades of research effort, the last five years have been the most productive period although citation structure has been relatively low. A greater proportion of the articles were published in Event Management with Saayman M, USA and North-West University being the most prolific author, country and institution, respectively. A co-citation network analysis unearthed four major themes: (1) festival impacts, sustainability, and management; (2) festival quality, satisfaction, and behavioral intentions; (3) festival authenticity, experiences, and revisit intentions; and (4) motivation and segmentation. The novel coronavirus (COVID-19) has inflicted unprecedented damage on the hospitality and tourism industry. However, the mental health fallout of COVID-19 on hotel employees is yet to receive empirical attention. This study, therefore, examines the consequences of COVID-19 on the psychological well-being and financial anxiety of hotel employees. An online survey distributed via a social networking site generated 173 responses, which were analyzed using descriptive statistics and PLS-SEM. The results of the study indicated that COVID-19 risk perception intensified financial anxiety among hotel employees while reducing their social functioning capability. Financial anxiety elicits psychological distress among hotel workers while weakening their social functioning. The relationship between COVID-19 risk perception and psychological distress was mediated by financial anxiety. Implications for hotel practitioners and policymakers are discussed.
