In an increasing number of fields of research it is important to be able to record very transient optical phenomena. Modern ultrafast cameras, called streak' cameras, are able to record -- in the range from X-rays to infra-red -- events which last only a few picoseconds ([10.sup.-12]S). This article reviews the principles and design of such cameras, with special reference to one optimized for X-ray detection.
