We report measurements of the mean settling velocities for suspensions of discs and rods in the stokes regime for a number of particle aspect ratios. All these shapes display "hindered settling", namely, a decrease in settling speed as the solid volume fraction is increased. A comparison of our data to spheres reveals that discs and rods show less hindering than spheres at the same relative interparticle distance. The data for all six of our particle shapes may be scaled to collapse on that of spheres, with a scaling factor that depends only on the volume of the particle relative to a sphere. Despite the orientational degrees of freedom available with nonspherical particles, it thus appears that the dominant contribution to the hindered settling emerges from terms that are simply proportional to the volume of the sedimenting particles.

Ensuring a smooth rate of efflux of particles from an outlet without unpredictable clogging events is crucial in processing powders and grains. We show by experiments and simulations that an obstacle placed near the outlet can greatly suppress clog formation in a 3-dimensional granular flow; this counterintuitive phenomenon had previously been demonstrated in 2-dimensional systems. Remarkably, clog suppression is very effective even when the obstacle cross-section is comparable to that of a single grain, and is only a small fraction of the outlet area. Data from two dissimilar obstacle shapes indicate that the underlying mechanism for clog suppression is geometric: while the magnitude of the effect can be affected by dynamical factors, the optimal location of the obstacle is determined entirely by a simple geometric rule. An optimally-placed obstacle arranges for the most-probable clogging arch to be at a perilous and unstable spot, where the local flow geometry is at a point of expansion and a slight perturbation leaves the arch without downstream support. This geometric principle does not rely on previously conjectured dynamical mechanisms and admits generalization to other agent-based and particulate systems.

We establish the existence of a cusp in the curvature of a solid sheet at its contact with a liquid subphase. We study two configurations in floating sheets where the solid-vapor-liquid contact line is a straight line and a circle, respectively. In the former case, a rectangular sheet is lifted at its edge, whereas in the latter a gas bubble is injected beneath a floating sheet. We show that in both geometries the derivative of the sheet's curvature is discontinuous. We demonstrate that the boundary condition at the contact is identical in these two geometries, even though the shape of the contact line and the stress distribution in the sheet are sharply different.

The shape assumed by a slender elastic structure is a function both of the geometry of the space in which it exists and the forces it experiences. We explore by experiments and theoretical analysis, the morphological phase-space of a filament confined to the surface of a spherical bubble. The morphology is controlled by varying bending stiffness and weight of the filament, and its length relative to the bubble radius. When the dominant considerations are geometry of confinement and elastic energy, the filament lies along a geodesic and when gravitational energy becomes significant, a bifurcation occurs, with a part of the filament occupying a longitude and the rest along a curve approximated by a latitude. Far beyond the transition, when the filament is much longer than the diameter, it coils around the selected latitudinal region. A simple model with filament shape as a composite of two arcs captures the transition well and for better quantitative agreement with the subcritical nature of bifurcation, we study the morphology by numerical energy minimization. Our analysis of filament's morphological space spanned by a geometric parameter, and one that compares elastic energy with body forces, may provide guidance for packing slender structures on complex surfaces.

We study the wetting of a thin elastic filament floating on a fluid surface by a droplet of another, immiscible fluid. This quasi-2D experimental system is the lower-dimensional counterpart of the wetting and wrapping of a droplet by an elastic sheet. The simplicity of this system allows us to study the phenomenology of partial wetting and wrapping of the droplet by measuring angles of contact as a function of the elasticity of the filament, the applied tension and the curvature of the droplet. We find that a purely geometric theory gives a good description of the mechanical equilibria in the system. The estimates of applied tension and tension in the filament obey an elastic version of the Young-Laplace-Dupr\'e relation. However, curvatures close to the contact line are not captured by the geometric theory, possibly because of 3D effects at the contact line. We also find that when a highly-bendable filament completely wraps the droplet, there is continuity of curvature at the droplet-filament interface, leading to seamless wrapping as observed in a 3D droplet.

An array of spheres descending slowly through a viscous fluid always clumps [J.M. Crowley, J. Fluid Mech. {\bf 45}, 151 (1971)]. We show that anisotropic particle shape qualitatively transforms this iconic instability of collective sedimentation. In experiment and theory on disks, aligned facing their neighbours in a horizontal one-dimensional lattice and settling at Reynolds number $\sim 10^{-4}$ in a quasi-two-dimensional slab geometry, we find that for large enough lattice spacing the coupling of disk orientation and translation rescues the array from the clumping instability. Despite the absence of inertia the resulting dynamics displays the wavelike excitations of a mass-and-spring array, with a conserved "momentum" in the form of the collective tilt of the disks and an emergent spring stiffness from the viscous hydrodynamic interaction. However, the non-normal character of the dynamical matrix leads to algebraic growth of perturbations even in the linearly stable regime. Stability analysis demarcates a phase boundary in the plane of wavenumber and lattice spacing, separating the regimes of algebraically growing waves and clumping, in quantitative agreement with our experiments. The collective dynamics of objects moving through a viscous fluid is complex and counterintuitive. A key to understanding the role of nontrivial particle shape in this complexity is the interaction of a pair of sedimenting spheroids. We report experimental results on two discs settling at negligible Reynolds number ($\simeq 10^{-4}$), finding two classes of bound periodic orbits, each with transitions to scattering states. We account for these dynamics, at leading far-field order, through an effective Hamiltonian in which gravitational driving endows orientation with the properties of momentum. This leads to a precise correspondence with the Kepler problem of planetary motion for a wide range of initial conditions, and also to orbits with no Keplerian analogue. This notion of internal degrees of freedom manifesting themselves as an effective inertia is potentially a more general tool in Stokesian driven systems.

Granular materials are an important physical realization of active matter. In vibration-fluidized granular matter, both diffusion and self-propulsion derive from the same collisional forcing, unlike many other active systems where there is a clean separation between the origin of single-particle mobility and the coupling to noise. Here we present experimental studies of single-particle motion in a vibrated granular monolayer, along with theoretical analysis that compares grain motion at short and long time scales to the assumptions and predictions, respectively, of the active Brownian particle (ABP) model. The results demonstrate that despite the unique relation between noise and propulsion, granular media do show the generic features predicted by the ABP model and indicate that this is a valid framework to predict collective phenomena. Predicting the large-amplitude deformations of thin elastic sheets is difficult due to the complications of self-contact, geometric nonlinearities, and a multitude of low-lying energy states. We study a simple two-dimensional setting where an annular polymer sheet floating on an air-water interface is subjected to different tensions on the inner and outer rims. The sheet folds and wrinkles into many distinct morphologies that break axisymmetry. These states can be understood within a recent geometric approach for determining the gross shape of extremely bendable yet inextensible sheets by extremizing an appropriate area functional. Our analysis explains the remarkable feature that the observed buckling transitions between wrinkled and folded shapes are insensitive to the bending rigidity of the sheet., Comment: 5 pages, 5 figures

We study experimentally the collision between a sphere falling through a viscous fluid, and a solid plate below. It is known that there is a well-defined threshold Stokes number above which the sphere rebounds from such a collision. Our experiment tests for direct contact between the colliding bodies, and contrary to prior theoretical predictions, shows that solid-on-solid contact occurs even for Stokes numbers just above the threshold for rebounding. The dissipation is fluid-dominated, though details of the contact mechanics depend on the surface and bulk properties of the solids. Our experiments and a model calculation indicate that mechanical contact between the two colliding objects is generic and will occur for any realistic surface roughness., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

We perform experiments to investigate the relaxation of a highly deformed elastic filament at a liquid-air interface. The dynamics for filaments of differing length, diameter and elastic modulus collapse to a single curve when the time-dependence is scaled by a time scale $\tau = 8 \pi \mu L_o^4/B$. The relaxation, however, is completed in a very small fraction of the time $\tau$. Even though the time scale $\tau$ can be obtained by balancing the linear bending and viscous forces, it appears to control the highly nonlinear regime of our experiments. Nonlinear numerical simulations show that the force due to tension along the filament is comparable to the bending force, producing a net elastic restoring force that is much smaller than either term. We perform particle image velocimetry at the liquid-air interface to support the results of the numerics. Finally, we find that when the filament is initialized in asymmetric shapes, it rapidly goes to a shape with symmetric stresses. This symmetrisation process is entirely non-linear; we show that the symmetric curvature state minimizes energy at arbitrarily large deformation.

We study an experimental system of hard granular squares in two dimensions, energized by vibration. The interplay of order in the orientations and positions of anisotropic particles allows for a rich set of phases. We measure the structure and dynamics of steady states as a function of particle density. This allows us to identify a progression of phases in which a low density isotropic fluid gives way to a phase with tetratic orientational order, short-range translational correlations, and slowed rotational dynamics. In this range of density we also observe a coupling between the molecular orientational order and bond-orientational order. We report an experimental study of the development of orientational order in a crumpled sheet, with a particular focus on the role played by the geometry of confinement. Our experiments are performed on elastomeric sheets immersed in a fluid, so that the effects of plasticity and friction are suppressed. When the sheet is crumpled either axially or radially within a cylinder, we find that the sheet aligns with the flat or the curved wall, depending on the aspect ratio of the cylinder. Nematic correlations develop between the normals of the sheets at relatively low volume fractions and the crumpled object has large density fluctuations corresponding to the stacking of parallel sheets. The aligning effect of the wall breaks symmetry and selects the direction of ordering.

We study the indentation of a thin elastic film floating at the surface of a liquid. We focus on the onset of radial wrinkles at a threshold indentation depth and the evolution of the wrinkle pattern as indentation progresses far beyond this threshold. Comparison between experiments on thin polymer films and theoretical calculations shows that the system very quickly reaches the Far from Threshold (FT) regime, in which wrinkles lead to the relaxation of azimuthal compression. Furthermore, when the indentation depth is sufficiently large that the wrinkles cover most of the film, we recognize a novel mechanical response in which the work of indentation is transmitted almost solely to the liquid, rather than to the floating film. We attribute this unique response to a nontrivial isometry attained by the deformed film, and discuss the scaling laws and the relevance of similar isometries to other systems in which a confined sheet is subjected to weak tensile loads., Comment: 5 pages, close to published version

When a thin sheet is crushed into a small three-dimensional volume, it invariably forms a structure with a low volume fraction but high resistance to further compression. Being a far-from-equilibrium process, forced crumpling is not necessarily amenable to a statistical description in which the parameters of the initially flat sheet and the final confinement fully specify the resulting crumpled state. Instead, the internal geometry and mechanical properties of the crumpled ball may reflect the history of its preparation. Our X-ray microtomography experiments reveal that the internal 3-dimensional geometry of a crumpled ball is in many respects isotropic and homogeneous. In these respects, crumpling recapitulates other classic nonequilibrium problems such as turbulence, where a system driven by long-wavelength, low-symmetry, forcing shows only rather subtle fingerprints of the forcing mechanism. However, we find local nematic ordering of the sheet into parallel stacks. The layering proceeds radially inwards from the outer surface. We have produced loose packings of cohesionless, frictional spheres by sequential deposition of highly-spherical, monodisperse particles through a fluid. By varying the properties of the fluid and the particles, we have identified the Stokes number (St) - rather than the buoyancy of the particles in the fluid - as the parameter controlling the approach to the loose packing limit. The loose packing limit is attained at a threshold value of St at which the kinetic energy of a particle impinging on the packing is fully dissipated by the fluid. Thus, for cohesionless particles, the dynamics of the deposition process, rather than the stability of the static packing, defines the random loose packing limit. We have made direct measurements of the interparticle friction in the fluid, and present an experimental measurement of the loose packing volume fraction, \phi_{RLP}, as a function of the friction coefficient \mu_s., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures

We report an experimental study of particle kinematics in a 3-dimensional system of inelastic spheres fluidized by intense vibration. The motion of particles in the interior of the medium is tracked by high speed video imaging, yielding a spatially-resolved measurement of the velocity distribution. The distribution is wider than a Gaussian and broadens continuously with increasing volume fraction. The deviations from a Gaussian distribution for this boundary-driven system are different in sign and larger in magnitude than predictions for homogeneously driven systems. We also find correlations between velocity components which grow with increasing volume fraction.

The mechanism by which a patterned state accommodates the breaking of translational symmetry by a phase boundary or a sample wall has been addressed in the context of Landau branching in type-I superconductors, refinement of magnetic domains, and compressed elastic sheets. We explore this issue by studying an ultrathin polymer sheet floating on the surface of a fluid, decorated with a pattern of parallel wrinkles. At the edge of the sheet, this corrugated profile meets the fluid meniscus. Rather than branching of wrinkles into generations of ever-smaller sharp folds, we discover a smooth cascade in which the coarse pattern in the bulk is matched to fine structure at the edge by the continuous introduction of discrete, higher wavenumber Fourier modes. The observed multiscale morphology is controlled by a dimensionless parameter that quantifies the relative strength of the edge forces and the rigidity of the bulk pattern., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

Two species of particles in a binary granular system typically do not have the same mean kinetic energy, in contrast to the equipartition of energy required in equilibrium. We investigate the role of the heating mechanism in determining the extent of this non-equipartition of kinetic energy. In most experiments, different species of particle are unequally heated at the boundaries. We show by event-driven simulations that this differential heating at the boundary influences the level of non-equipartition even in the bulk of the system. This conclusion is fortified by studying a numerical model and a solvable stochastic model without spatial degrees of freedom. In both cases, even in the limit where heating events are rare compared to collisions, the effect of the heating mechanism persists.

Coherently moving flocks of birds, beasts or bacteria are examples of living matter with spontaneous orientational order. How do these systems differ from thermal equilibrium systems with such liquid-crystalline order? Working with a fluidized monolayer of macroscopic rods in the nematic liquid crystalline phase, we find giant number fluctuations consistent with a standard deviation growing linearly with the mean, in contrast to any situation where the Central Limit Theorem applies. These fluctuations are long-lived, decaying only as a logarithmic function of time. This shows that flocking, coherent motion and large-scale inhomogeneity can appear in a system in which particles do not communicate except by contact., Comment: This is the author's version of the work. We report measurements in a 2-dimensional, gravity-driven, collisional, granular flow of the normal force delivered to the wall and of particle velocity at several points in the flow. The wall force and the flow velocity are negatively correlated. This correlation falls off only slowly with distance transverse to the flow, but dies away on the scale of a few particle diameters upstream or downstream. The data support a picture of short-lived chains of frequently colliding particles that extend transverse to the flow direction, making transient load-bearing bridges that cause bulk fluctuations in the flow velocity. The time-dependence of these spatial correlation functions indicate that while the force-bearing structures are local in space, their influence extends far upstream in the flow, albeit with a time-lag. We study experimentally the nonequilibrium phase behaviour of a horizontal monolayer of macroscopic rods. The motion of the rods in two dimensions is driven by vibrations in the vertical direction. Aside from the control variables of packing fraction and aspect ratio that are typically explored in molecular liquid crystalline systems, due to the macroscopic size of the particles we are also able to investigate the effect of the precise shape of the particle on the steady states of this driven system. We find that the shape plays an important role in determining the nature of the orientational ordering at high packing fraction. Cylindrical particles show substantial tetratic correlations over a range of aspect ratios where spherocylinders have previously been shown by Bates et al (JCP 112, 10034 (2000)) to undergo transitions between isotropic and nematic phases. Particles that are thinner at the ends (rolling pins or bails) show nematic ordering over the same range of aspect ratios, with a well-established nematic phase at large aspect ratio and a defect-ridden nematic state with large-scale swirling motion at small aspect ratios. We assess the relative importance of spatial congestion and lowered temperature in the slowing dynamics of supercooled glycerol near the glass transition. We independently vary both volume, V, and temperature, T, by applying high pressure and monitor the dynamics by measuring the dielectric susceptibility. Our results demonstrate that both variables are control variables of comparable importance. However, a generalization of the concept of fragility of a glass-former shows that the dynamics are quantitatively more sensitive to fractional changes in V than T. We identify a connection between the fragility and a recently proposed density-temperature scaling which indicates that this conclusion holds for other liquids and polymers., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, submitted for publication

We study the statistics of the power flux into a collection of inelastic beads maintained in a fluidized steady-state by external mechanical driving. The power shows large fluctuations, including frequent large negative fluctuations, about its average value. The relative probabilities of positive and negative fluctuations in the power flux are in close accord with the Fluctuation Theorem of Gallavotti and Cohen, even at time scales shorter than those required by the theorem. We have studied the coefficient of restitution, $\eta$, in normal collisions of a non-rotating sphere on a massive plate for a range of material parameters, impact velocity and sphere size. The measured coefficient of restitution does not monotonically vary with velocity. This effect is due to dynamics that occur during the finite duration of impact: the contact time varies as a function of velocity is comparable to the time-scales of the vibrational modes of the plate. The measured effect is robust and is expected to be ubiquitous in fluidized granular media. We report the characteristics of the temporal fluctuations in the local force delivered to the wall of a 2D hopper by a granular medium flowing through it. The forces are predominantly impulsive at all flow rates for which the flow does not permanently jam. The average impulse delivered to the wall is much larger than the momentum acquired by a single particle under gravity between collisions, reflecting the fact that momentum is transferred to the walls from the bulk of the flow by collisions. At values larger than the average impulse, the probability distribution of impulses is broad and decays exponentially on the scale of the average impulse, just as it does in static granular media. At small impulse values, the probability distribution evolves continuously with flow velocity but does not show a clear signature of the transition from purely collisional flow to intermittently jamming flows. However, the time interval between collisions tends to a power law distribution, $P(\tau)\sim \tau^{-3/2}$, thus showing a clear dynamical signature of the approach to jamming., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We report experiments on the equipartition of kinetic energy between grains made of two different materials in a mixture of grains vibrated in 2 dimensions. In general, the two types of grains do not attain the same granular temperature, Tg = 1/2m v^2. However, the ratio of the two temperatures is constant in the bulk of the system and independent of the vibration velocity. The ratio depends strongly on the ratio of mass densities of the grains, but is not sensitive to the inelasticity of grains. Also, this ratio is insensitive to compositional variables of the mixture such as the number fraction of each component and the total number density.
