Context. Two millisecond pulsars, PSR J1513$-$2550 and PSR J2017$-$1614, with spin periods of about 2.1 and 2.3 ms were recently discovered in the radio and $\gamma$-rays and classified as black widow pulsars in tight binary stellar systems with orbital periods of about 4.3 and 2.3 h. Aims. Our goals are to reveal fundamental parameters of both systems and their binary components using multi-wavelength observations. Methods. We carried out the first time-series multi-band optical photometry of the objects with the 2.1-metre telescope of the Observatorio Astron\'omico Nacional San Pedro M\'artir, the 6.5-metre \magel-1 telescope, and the 10.4-metre Gran Telescopio Canarias. To derive the parameters of both systems, we fitted the obtained light curves with a model assuming heating of the companion by the pulsar. We also analysed archival X-ray data obtained with the XMM-Newton observatory. Results. For the first time, we firmly identified J1513$-$2550 in the optical and both pulsars in X-rays. The optical light curves of both systems have a single peak per orbital period with peak-to-peak amplitude of $\gtrsim2$ magnitudes. The J2017$-$1614 light curves are symmetric, while J1513$-$2550 demonstrates strong asymmetry whose nature remains unclear. Conclusions. We constrained the orbital inclinations, pulsar masses, companion temperatures and masses, as well as the distances to both systems. We also conclude that J2017$-$1614 may contain a massive neutron star of 2.4$\pm$0.6 M$_{\odot}$. The presence of pre-main-sequence and low-mass stars, combined with the new data from Gaia DR3 and with 2MASS, significantly enhances the relevance of studying this cluster. We aim to accurately identify cluster members, determine fundamental parameters, assess mass segregation, and establish precise age and distance using Gaia DR3 and 2MASS data. We employed Bayesian analysis and machine learning techniques, including the Hierarchical Density-Based Spatial Clustering of Applications with Noise (HDBSCAN) for member identification, the No-U-Turn Sampler (NUTS) from PyMC for modeling, the Sagitta neural network for the identification and age estimation of pre-main sequence stars, and ASteCA for isochrone fitting. We identified 254 probable cluster members with a mode cluster age of $3.53^{+1.40}_{-1.00}$ Myr and a distance of $1.11\pm 0.06$ kpc. The core and tidal radius were determined to be $1.95 \pm 0.19$ and $40.4 \pm 14.3\,\mathrm{arcmin}$, respectively. The analysis revealed primordial mass segregation among binary stars, indicating that NGC 6383 is not fully relaxed. The color magnitude diagram (CMD) shows a well-defined main sequence and a population of pre-main sequence stars, suggesting recent star formation activity from approximately 1 to 6 Myr ago. The aim of this study is to explore the magnetic and flow properties of fully convective M dwarfs as a function of rotation period Prot and magnetic Reynolds ReM and Prandlt numbers PrM. We performed three-dimensional simulations of fully convective stars using a star-in-a-box setup. This setup allows global dynamo simulations in a sphere embedded in a Cartesian cube. The equations of non-ideal magnetohydrodynamics were solved with the Pencil Code. We used the stellar parameters of an M5 dwarf with 0.21M_odot at three rotation rates corresponding to rotation periods (Prot): 43, 61 and 90 days, and varied the magnetic Prandtl number in the range from 0.1 to 10. We found systematic differences in the behaviour of the large-scale magnetic field as functions of rotation and PrM. For the simulations with Prot = 43 days and PrM <= 2, we found cyclic large-scale magnetic fields. For PrM > 2 the cycles vanish and field shows irregular reversals. In simulations with Prot = 61 days for PrM <= 2 the cycles are less clear and the reversal are less periodic. In the higher-PrM cases, the axisymmetric mean field shows irregular variations. For the slowest rotation case with Prot = 90 days, the field has an important dipolar component for PrM <= 5. For the highest PrM the large-scale magnetic field is predominantly irregular at mid-latitudes, with quasi-stationary fields near the poles. Context: A detailed study of the close interacting binary V4142\,Sgr based on photometric and spectroscopic analysis is presented.This system belongs to the enigmatic class of Algol-like variables showing a long photometric cycle of unknown nature. Aims: Performing photometric data-mining and spectroscopic observations covering the orbital cycle, we obtain the orbital parameters and the stellar properties of the binary system, along with the physical properties of the accretion disk located around the hot star. Insights on the evolutive path of the system are obtained. Methods: The light curve was modeled through an inverse modeling method using a theoretical light curve of the binary system, considering the light curve contribution of both stars and the accretion disk of the hot star to obtain the fundamental parameters. To constrain the main stellar parameters the mass ratio was fixed, as well as the donor temperature using the obtained values from our spectroscopic analysis including deblending methods to isolate the spectral lines of the stellar components. The system parameters were compared with a grid of binary star evolutive models in order to get insights on the evolutionary history of the system. Results: The orbital period and the long cycle were re-calculated and found to be of $30.633 \pm 0.002 ~\mathrm{days}$ and $1201 \pm 14 ~\mathrm{days}$. The spectral analysis reveals H$\alpha$ double emission with a persistent $V \leq R$ asymmetry which is considered evidence of a possible wind emergin from the hotspot region...

Context. Gliese 832 (GJ 832) is an M2V star hosting a massive planet on a decade-long orbit, GJ 832b, discovered by radial velocity (RV). Later, a super Earth or mini-Neptune orbiting within the stellar habitable zone was reported (GJ 832c). The recently determined stellar rotation period (45.7 $\pm$ 9.3 days) is close to the orbital period of putative planet c (35.68 $\pm$ 0.03 days). Aims. We aim to confirm or dismiss the planetary nature of the RV signature attributed to GJ 832c, by adding 119 new RV data points, new photometric data, and an analysis of the spectroscopic stellar activity indicators. Additionally, we update the orbital parameters of the planetary system and search for additional signals. Methods. We performed a frequency content analysis of the RVs to search for periodic and stable signals. Radial velocity time series were modelled with Keplerians and Gaussian process (GP) regressions alongside activity indicators to subsequently compare them within a Bayesian framework. Results. We updated the stellar rotational period of GJ 832 from activity indicators, obtaining $37.5^{+1.4}_{-1.5}$ days, improving the precision by a factor of 6. The new photometric data are in agreement with this value. We detected an RV signal near 18 days (FAP < 4.6%), which is half of the stellar rotation period. Two Keplerians alone fail at modelling GJ 832b and a second planet with a 35-day orbital period. Moreover, the Bayesian evidence from the GP analysis of the RV data with simultaneous activity indices prefers a model without a second Keplerian, therefore negating the existence of planet c., Comment: A&A in press

Context. The eclipsing close binary UU Cas is an interacting massive double-periodic system with a gainer star partly hidden in an accretion disk. Aims. In order to study the physics of the accretion process in greater detail, along with the structure and dynamics of the circumstellar matter in the system, we supplement our previous results obtained from photometry with an analysis of the spectra of UU Cas. Methods. We collected all available spectra used in previous publications on UU Cas and we acquired new ones. The method of disentangling was applied to this set of spectra spanning the years 2008-2021. The orbital parameters were disentangled and a fit of the separated component spectra by synthetic ones has been used to determine the physical parameters of the component stars. We compared the results to models of the evolution of interacting binaries. Results. We found that in addition to the dominant role of the donor star and a weak contribution of the gainer, the line profiles are strongly influenced by the circumstellar matter. The absorption lines reveal a presence of a disk wind emanating above the orbital plane. The variability of H{\alpha} emission yields evidence of changes in the structure of the circumstellar matter on a timescale of several orbital periods.

We present a detailed photometric and spectroscopic analysis of DD CMa, based on published survey photometry and new spectroscopic data. We find an improved orbital period of $P_\mathrm{o}= 2.0084530 \pm 0.0000006 ~\mathrm{d}$. Our spectra reveal H$\beta$ and H$\alpha$ absorptions with weak emission shoulders and we also find color excess in the WISE multiband photometry, interpreted as signatures of circumstellar matter. We model the $V$-band orbital light curve derived from the ASAS and ASAS-SN surveys, assuming a semidetached configuration and using the mass ratio and temperature of the hotter star derived from our spectroscopic analysis. Our model indicates that the system consists of a B 2.5 dwarf and a B 9 giant of radii 3.2 and 3.7 $\mathrm{R_{\odot}}$, respectively, orbiting in a circular orbit of radius 6.75 $\mathrm{R_{\odot}}$. We also found $M_{\mathrm{c}} = 1.7 \pm 0.1 ~\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, $T_{\mathrm{c}} = 11350 \pm 100 ~\mathrm{K}$ and $M_{\mathrm{h}} = 6.4 \pm 0.1 ~\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$, $T_{\mathrm{h}} = 20000 \pm 500 ~\mathrm{K}$, for the cooler and hotter star, respectively. We find broad single emission peaks in H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ after subtracting the synthetic stellar spectra. Our results are consistent with mass exchange between the stars, and suggest the existence of a stream of gas being accreted onto the early B-type star., Comment: 14 pages with 13 figures

We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of HD 50526, an ellipsoidal binary member of the group Double Periodic Variable stars. Performing data-mining in photometric surveys and conducting new spectroscopic observations with several spectrographs during 2008 to 2015, we obtained orbital and stellar parameters of the system. The radial velocities were analyzed with the genetic PIKAIA algorithm, whereas Doppler tomography maps for the H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ lines were constructed with the Total Variation Minimization code. An optimized simplex-algorithm was used to solve the inverse-problem adjusting the light curve with the best stellar parameters for the system. We find an orbital period of $6.701 \pm 0.001 ~\mathrm{d}$ and a long photometric cycle of $191 \pm 2 ~\mathrm{d}$. We detected the spectral features of the coldest star, and modeled it with a $\log{g} = 2.79 \pm 0.02 ~\mathrm{dex}$ giant of mass $1.13 \pm 0.02 ~\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$ and effective temperature $10500 \pm 125 ~\mathrm{K}$. In addition, we determine a mass ratio $q= 0.206 \pm 0.033$ and that the hot star is a B-type dwarf of mass $5.48 \pm 0.02 ~\mathrm{M_{\odot}}$. The $V$-band orbital light curve can be modeled including the presence of an accretion disk around the hotter star. This fills the Roche lobe of the hotter star, and has a radius $14.74 \pm 0.02 ~\mathrm{R_{\odot}}$ and temperature at the outer edge $9400 ~\mathrm{K}$. Two bright spots located in the disk account for the global morphology of the light curve. LTT 1445 is a hierarchical triple M-dwarf star system located at a distance of 6.86 parsecs. The primary star LTT 1445A (0.257 M_Sun) is known to host the transiting planet LTT 1445Ab with an orbital period of 5.4 days, making it the second closest known transiting exoplanet system, and the closest one for which the host is an M dwarf. Using TESS data, we present the discovery of a second planet in the LTT 1445 system, with an orbital period of 3.1 days. We combine radial velocity measurements obtained from the five spectrographs ESPRESSO, HARPS, HIRES, MAROON-X, and PFS to establish that the new world also orbits LTT 1445A. We determine the mass and radius of LTT 1445Ab to be 2.87+/-0.25 M_Earth and 1.304^{+0.067}_{-0.060} R_Earth, consistent with an Earth-like composition. For the newly discovered LTT 1445Ac, we measure a mass of 1.54^{+0.20}_{-0.19} M_Earth and a minimum radius of 1.15 R_Earth, but we cannot determine the radius directly as the signal-to-noise of our light curve permits both grazing and non-grazing configurations. Using MEarth photometry and ground-based spectroscopy, we establish that star C (0.161 M_Sun) is likely the source of the 1.4-day rotation period, and star B (0.215 M_Sun) has a likely rotation period of 6.7 days. We estimate a probable rotation period of 85 days for LTT 1445A. Thus, this triple M-dwarf system appears to be in a special evolutionary stage where the most massive M dwarf has spun down, the intermediate mass M dwarf is in the process of spinning down, while the least massive stellar component has not yet begun to spin down., Comment: Accepted to the Astronomical Journal. 4 tables, 10 figures; RV table available upon request

We report detection of PSR B0656$+$14 with the Gran Telescopio Canarias in narrow optical $F657$, $F754$, $F802$, and $F902$ and near-infrared $JHK_s$ bands. The pulsar detection in the $K_s$ band extends its spectrum to 2.2 $\mu$m and confirms its flux increase towards the infrared. We also present a thorough analysis of the optical spectrum obtained by us with the VLT. For a consistency check, we revised the pulsar near-infrared and narrow-band photometry obtained with the \textit{HST}. We find no narrow spectral lines in the optical spectrum. We compile available near-infrared-optical-UV and archival 0.3-20keV X-ray data and perform a self-consistent analysis of the rotation phase-integrated spectrum of the pulsar using unified spectral models. The spectrum is best fitted by the four-component model including two blackbodies, describing the thermal emission from the neutron star surface and its hot polar cap, the broken power-law, originating from the pulsar magnetosphere, and an absorption line near $\sim$0.5 keV detected previously. The fit provides better constraints on the model parameters than using only a single spectral domain. The derived surface temperature is $T_{NS}^{\infty}=7.9(3)\times10^5$K. The intrinsic radius (7.8-9.9 km) of the emitting region is smaller than a typical neutron star radius (13km) and suggests a nonuniform temperature distribution over the star surface. In contrast, the derived radius of the hot polar cap is about twice as large as the `canonical' one. The spectrum of the nonthermal emission steepens from the optical to X-rays and has a break near 0.1 keV. We report on precise Doppler measurements of L231-32 (TOI-270), a nearby M dwarf ($d=22$ pc, $M_\star = 0.39$ M$_\odot$, $R_\star = 0.38$ R$_\odot$), which hosts three transiting planets that were recently discovered using data from the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS). The three planets are 1.2, 2.4, and 2.1 times the size of Earth and have orbital periods of 3.4, 5.7, and 11.4 days. We obtained 29 high-resolution optical spectra with the newly commissioned Echelle Spectrograph for Rocky Exoplanet and Stable Spectroscopic Observations (ESPRESSO) and 58 spectra using the High Accuracy Radial velocity Planet Searcher (HARPS). From these observations, we find the masses of the planets to be $1.58 \pm 0.26$, $6.15 \pm 0.37$, and $4.78 \pm 0.43$ M$_\oplus$, respectively. The combination of radius and mass measurements suggests that the innermost planet has a rocky composition similar to that of Earth, while the outer two planets have lower densities. Thus, the inner planet and the outer planets are on opposite sides of the `radius valley' -- a region in the radius-period diagram with relatively few members, which has been interpreted as a consequence of atmospheric photo-evaporation. We place these findings into the context of other small close-in planets orbiting M dwarf stars, and use support vector machines to determine the location and slope of the M dwarf ($T_\mathrm{eff} < 4000$ K) radius valley as a function of orbital period. We compare the location of the M dwarf radius valley to the radius valley observed for FGK stars, and find that its location is a good match to photo-evaporation and core-powered mass loss models. Finally, we show that planets below the M dwarf radius valley have compositions consistent with stripped rocky cores, whereas most planets above have a lower density consistent with the presence of a H-He atmosphere., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present the results of the study of the close binary UU Cassiopeiae based on previously published multi wavelength photometric and spectroscopic data. Based on eclipse timings of the last 117 years, we find an improved orbital period of $\rm P_{o} = 8.519296(8)$ d. In addition, we find a long cycle of length $T$ $\sim$ 270 d in the $I_c$-band data. There is no evidence for orbital period change during the last century, suggesting that the rate of mass loss from the system or mass exchange between the stars should be small. Sporadic and rapid brightness drops of up to $\Delta$$V$ = 0.3 mag are detected during the whole orbital cycle and infrared photometry clearly suggests the presence of circumstellar matter. We model the orbital light curve of 11 published datasets fixing the mass ratio and cool star temperature from previous spectroscopic work; $q$= 0.52 and $T_c$= 22 700 K. We find a system seen at angle 74 degrees with a stellar separation of 52 ${\rm R_{\odot}}$, a temperature for the hotter star $T_h$= 30 200 $K$ and stellar masses 17.4 and 9 ${\rm M_{\odot}}$ , radii 7.0 and 16.9 ${\rm R_{\odot}}$ and surface gravities log g = 3.98 and 2.94, for the hotter and cooler star, respectively. We find an accretion disk surrounding the more massive star, with a radius of 21 ${\rm R_{\odot}}$ and vertical thickness in its outer edge of 6.5 ${\rm R_{\odot}}$, mostly occulting the hotter star. Two active regions hotter than the surrounding disk are found, one located roughly in the expected position where the stream impacts the disk and the other one in the opposite side of the disk. The subtype of hot algol semidetached binaries dubbed Double Periodic Variables (DPVs) are characterized by a photometric cycle longer than the orbital one, whose nature has been related to a magnetic dynamo in the donor component controlling the mass transfer rate. We aim to understand the morphologic changes observed in the light curve of OGLE-BLG-ECL-157529 that are linked to the long cycle. In particular, we want to explain the changes in relative depth of primary and secondary eclipses. We analyze $I$ and $V$-band OGLE photometric times series spanning 18.5 years and model the orbital light curve. We find that OGLE-BLG-ECL-157529 is a new eclipsing Galactic DPV of orbital period 24\fd8, and that its long cycle length decreases in amplitude and length during the time baseline. We show that the changes of the orbital light curve can be reproduced considering an accretion disk of variable thickness and radius, surrounding the hottest stellar component. Our models indicate changes in the temperatures of hot spot and bright spot during the long cycle, and also in the position of the bright spot. We report the detection of a transiting super-Earth-sized planet (R=1.39+-0.09 Rearth) in a 1.4-day orbit around L 168-9 (TOI-134),a bright M1V dwarf (V=11, K=7.1) located at 25.15+-0.02 pc. The host star was observed in the first sector of the Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) mission and, for confirmation and planet mass measurement, was followed up with ground-based photometry, seeing-limited and high-resolution imaging, and precise radial velocity (PRV) observations using the HARPS and PFS spectrographs. Combining the TESS data and PRV observations, we find the mass of L168-9 b to be 4.60+-0.56 Mearth, and thus the bulk density to be 1.74+0.44-0.33 times larger than that of the Earth. The orbital eccentricity is smaller than 0.21 (95% confidence). This planet is a Level One Candidate for the TESS Mission's scientific objective - to measure the masses of 50 small planets - and is one of the most observationally accessible terrestrial planets for future atmospheric characterization., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables. We report the discovery of 3 new Double Periodic Variables based on the analysis of ASAS-SN light curves: GSD J11630570-510306, V593 Sco and TYC 6939-678-1. These systems have orbital periods between 10 and 20 days and long cycles between 300 and 600 days.

OGLE-LMC-DPV-065 is an interacting binary whose double-hump long photometric cycle remains hitherto unexplained. We analyze photometric time series available in archive datasets spanning 124 years and present the analysis of new high-resolution spectra. A refined orbital period is found of 10\fd0316267 $\pm$ 0\fd0000056 without any evidence of variability. In spite of this constancy, small but significant changes in timings of the secondary eclipse are detected. We show that the long period continuously decreases from 350 to 218 days during 13 years, then remains almost constant for about 10 years. Our study of radial velocities indicates a circular orbit for the binary and yields a mass ratio of 0.203 $\pm$ 0.001. From the analysis of the orbital light curve we find that the system contains 13.8 and 2.81 \msun\ stars of radii 8.8 and 12.6 \rsun\ and absolute bolometric magnitudes -6.4 and -3.0, respectively. The orbit semi-major axis is 49.9 \rsun\ and the stellar temperatures are 25460 K and 9825 K. We find evidence for an optically and geometrically thick disk around the hotter star. According to our model, the disk has a radius of 25 \rsun, central and outer vertical thickness of 1.6 \rsun\ and 3.5 \rsun, and temperature of 9380 K at its outer edge. Two shock regions located at roughly opposite parts of the outer disk rim can explain the light curves asymmetries. The system is a member of the double periodic variables and its relatively high-mass and long photometric cycle make it similar in some aspects to $\beta$ Lyrae., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS main journal

Temporal variation of millimeter lines is a new direction of research for evolved stars. It has the potential to probe the dynamical wind launching processes from time dimension. We report here the first ALMA (Atacama Large Millimeter Array) results that cover 817 days of an on-going monitoring of 1.1 mm lines in the archetypal carbon star IRC +10216. The monitoring is done with the compact 7-m array (ACA) and in infrared with a 1.25 m telescope in Crimea. A high sensitivity of the cumulative spectra covering a total of ~7.2 GHz between 250 - 270 GHz range has allowed us to detect about 148 known transitions of 20 molecules, together with more of their isotopologues, and 81 unidentified lines. An overview of the variabilities of all detected line features are presented in spectral plots. Although a handful of lines are found to be very possibly stable in time, most other lines are varying either roughly in phase or in anti-correlation with the near-infrared light. Several lines have their variations in the ALMA data coincident with existing single dish monitoring results, while several others do not, which requires an yet unknown mechanism in the circumstellar envelop to explain., Comment: 26 pages, 4 figures, 2 tables, accepted by ApJ

DQ Velorum is a galactic double periodic variable (DPV), this system is a semi-detached binary comprised of a B-type gainer and an A-type donor star plus an extended accretion disc around the gainer. The system also presents an orbital period of $6.08337$~days and a long period of $189$~days whose origin is still under debate. Here we studied the possibility that this period may be driven by a magnetic dynamo investigating the entire evolution of the system. The model matches in a very good way the current state of the system and it can potentially be used to describe the evolution of DQ Velorum. It also predicts an increase of the dynamo number of the donor during epochs of high mass transfer in this system, and a theoretical long/orbital period ratio very close to the observed one at the present system age., Comment: 3 pages, 1 figure, conference proceeding

We present a simple model for the Double Periodic Variable (DPV) V495 Cen, which evolves as a binary system of intermediate mass, where the gainer cannot accrete at high rate, limited by the Eddington accretion rate, leading to the formation of an accretion disc. The theoretical model begins at the zero age main sequence considering the rotation for both stars. For this purpose we used the stellar evolution code MESA, developed to calculate the evolution of stars in a wide range of parameters. We started the model adjusting fundamental parameters published for this system through a chi-square optimization algorithm, and adopting an initial orbital period of 3.9 days and initial masses for the primary component $M_{i,d} = 3.40$ $M_{\odot}$ and $M_{i,g}= 3.18$ $M_{\odot}$ for the gainer, with a metallicity associated to this type of DPV of $Z = 0.02$. The method converged successfully for eight free degrees and 5% of confidence with a chi-square of $\Delta \chi^{2}_{0.95,8}= 0.212$. We describe each evolutionary stage of both components until that the donor reaches 20% core helium depletion as stop criterion. We offer a complementary analysis for understanding the mechanism of the magnetic dynamos inside the donor star using the Tayler-Spruit formalism. Currently, the theoretical model is consistent with the fundamental parameters published for V495 Cen and we discuss how our predictions can help to develop efficients theoretical models for DPV stars.

In this work we show a technique that allows for the musical interpretation of the brightness variations of stars. This method allows composers a lot of freedom to incorporate their own ideas into the score, based on the melodic line generated from the quantitative data obtained from the stars. We have performed a new search for DPVs of short period in the ASAS catalog (Pojmanski, G., 1997), focusing on those stars with orbital periods between 2 to 3 days which also show variations in their brightness. From a total of 244 objects, we have found another candidate to DPV, one whose mean brightness is gradually decreasing. By fitting a 3rd order polynomial to the mean magnitude and then moving it to zero for a second analysis, a gradual decrease over 2500 days was revealed. During the last 1000 days of this decrease, a 42% increase in the variation between the minimum and maximum values of the magnitude was observed. We determined the orbital period by using the PDM IRAF software (Stellingwerf 1978) and estimated the errors for the orbital period and long cycle by visual inspection of the light curves phased with trial periods near the minimum of the periodogram given by PDM., Comment: 3 pages, 4 figures

Observations of 48 red-clump stars were obtained in the H band with the PIONIER instrument installed at the Very Large Telescope Interferometer. Limb-darkened angular diameters were measured by fitting radial intensity profile I(r) to square visibility measurements. Half the angular diameters determined have formal errors better than 1.2%, while the overall accuracy is better than 2.7%. Average stellar atmospheric parameters (effective temperatures, metallicities and surface gravities) were determined from new spectroscopic observations and literature data and combined with precise Gaia parallaxes to derive a set of fundamental stellar properties. These intrinsic parameters were then fitted to existing isochrone models to infer masses and ages of the stars. The added value from interferometry imposes a better and independent constraint on the R-Teff plane. Our derived values are consistent with previous works, although there is a strong scatter in age between various models. This shows that atmospheric parameters, mainly metallicities and surface gravities, still suffer from a non-accurate determination, limiting constraints on input physics and parameters of stellar evolution models., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 12 pages

Although timing variations in close binary systems have been studied for a long time, their underlying causes are still unclear. A possible explanation is the so-called Applegate mechanism, where a strong, variable magnetic field can periodically change the gravitational quadrupole moment of a stellar component, thus causing observable period changes. One of the systems exhibiting such strong orbital variations is the RS CVn binary HR 1099, whose activity cycle has been studied by various authors via photospheric and chromospheric activity indicators, resulting in contradicting periods. We aim at independently determining the magnetic activity cycle of HR 1099 using archival X-ray data to allow for a comparison to orbital period variations. Archival X-ray data from 80 different observations of HR 1099 acquired with 12 different X-ray facilities and covering almost four decades were used to determine X-ray fluxes in the energy range of 2-10 keV via spectral fitting and flux conversion. Via the Lomb-Scargle periodogram we analyze the resulting long-term X-ray light curve to search for periodicities. We do not detect any statistically significant periodicities within the X-ray data. An analysis of optical data of HR 1099 shows that the derivation of such periods is strongly dependent on the time coverage of available data, since the observed optical variations strongly deviate from a pure sine wave. We argue that this offers an explanation as to why other authors derive such a wide range of activity cycle periods based on optical data. We conclude that our analysis constitutes the longest stellar X-ray activity light curve acquired to date, yet the still rather sparse sampling of the X-ray data, along with stochastic flaring activity, does not allow for the independent determination of an X-ray activity cycle., Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables accepted for publication in A&A

Double Periodic Variables (DPVs) are hot Algols showing a long photometric cycle of uncertain origin. We report the discovery of changes in the orbital light curve of OGLE-LMC-DPV-097 which depend on the phase of its long photometric cycle. During the ascending branch of the long-cycle the brightness at the first quadrature is larger than during the second quadrature, during the maximum of the long-cycle the brightness is basically the same at both quadratures, during the descending branch the brightness at the second quadrature is larger than during the first quadrature and during the minimum of the long-cycle the secondary minimum disappears. We model the light curve at different phases of the long-cycle and find that the data are consistent with changes in the properties of the accretion disk and two disk spots. The disk's size and temperature change with the long-cycle period. We find a smaller and hotter disk at minimum and larger and cooler disk at maximum. Double Periodic Variables (DPV) are among the new enigmas of semi-detached eclipsing binaries. These are intermediate-mass binaries characterized by a long photometric period lasting on average 33 times the orbital period. We present a spectroscopic and photometric study of the DPV V495 Cen based on new high-resolution spectra and the ASAS V-band light curve. We have determined an improved orbital period of $33.492 \pm 0.002$ d and a long period of 1283 d. We find a cool evolved star of $M_{2}=0.91\pm 0.2 M_{\odot}$, $T_{2}= 6000\pm 250 K$ and $R_{2}=19.3 \pm 0.5 R_{\odot}$ and a hot companion of $M_{1}= 5.76\pm 0.3 M_{\odot}$, $T_{1}=16960\pm 400 K$ and $R=4.5\pm0.2 R_{\odot}$. The mid-type B dwarf is surrounded by a concave and geometrically thick disc, of radial extension $R_{d}= 40.2\pm 1.3 R_{\odot}$ contributing $\sim$ 11 percent to the total luminosity of the system at the V band. The system is seen under inclination $84.\!\!^{\circ}8$ $\pm$ $0.\!\!^{\circ}6$ and it is at a distance $d= 2092 \pm 104.6$ pc. The light curve analysis suggests that the mass transfer stream impacts the external edge of the disc forming a hot region 11 % hotter than the surrounding disc material. The persistent $V

We present elemental abundance analysis of high-resolution spectra for five giant stars, deriving Fe, Mg, Al, C, N, O, Si and Ce abundances, and spatially located within the innermost regions of the bulge globular cluster NGC 6522, based on H-band spectra taken with the multi-object APOGEE-north spectrograph from the SDSS-IV Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE) survey. Of the five cluster candidates, two previously unremarked stars are confirmed to have second-generation (SG) abundance patterns, with the basic pattern of depletion in C and Mg simultaneous with enrichment in N and Al as seen in other SG globular cluster populations at similar metallicity. } In agreement with the most recent optical studies, the NGC 6522 stars analyzed exhibit (when available) only mild overabundances of the s-process element Ce, contradicting the idea of the NGC 6522 stars being formed from gas enriched by spinstars and indicating that other stellar sources such as massive AGB stars could be the primary intra-cluster medium polluters. We report the discovery of a possible symbiotic star, in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). The object under consideration here, designated as RP 870, was detected during the course of a comprehensive H$\alpha$ survey of the LMC by Reid & Parker (2012). The spectrum of RP 870 showed high ionization emission lines of He I, He II and [O III] and molecular absorption bands of TiO $\lambda$$\lambda$6180, 7100. The collective signatures of a hot component (high excitation/ionization lines) and of a cool component (TiO molecular bands) are seen in RP 870, from which we propose it as a symbiotic star. Since known symbiotic systems are rare in the LMC, possibly less than a dozen are known, we thought the present detection to be interesting enough to be reported., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures, accepted for publication in Research Notes of the AAS

We present a photometric and spectroscopic study of AzV322, an emission line object located in the Small Magellanic Cloud previously classified between O9 and B0. We analyze 17.5 years of $I$ and $V$ band OGLE-II, III and IV light curves and find four significant frequencies, viz. $f_1$= 0.386549 $\pm$ 0.000003, $f_2$= 0.101177 $\pm$ 0.000005, $f_3$= 0.487726 $\pm$ 0.000015 and $f_4$= 0.874302 $\pm$ 0.000020 c/d. The $f_1$ frequency (period 2.58700 $\pm$ 0.00002 days) provides the stronger periodogram peak and gives a single wave light curve of full amplitude 0.066 mag in the $I$-band. High-resolution optical spectroscopy confirms the early B-type spectral type and reveals prominent double peak Balmer, Paschen, OI 8446 and HeI 5875 emissions. The spectral energy distribution shows significant color excess towards long wavelengths possibly attributed to free-free emission in a disk-like envelope. Our analysis yields $T_{eff}$ = 23000 $\pm$ 1500 K, log g = 3.0 $\pm$ 0.5, $M$ = 16 $\pm$ 1 M$_{\odot}$, $R$ = 31.0 $\pm$ 1.1 R$_{\odot}$, and $L_{bol}$ = 10$^{4.87 \pm 0.06}$ $L_{\odot}$. AzV322 might be a member of the new class of slowly pulsating B supergiants introduced by Saio et al. (2006) and documented by Lefever, Puls & Aerts (2007), however its circumstellar disk make it an hitherto unique object. Furthermore, we notice that a O-C analysis for $f_1$ reveals quasi-cyclic changes for the times of maximum in a time scale of 20 years which might indicate a light-travel time effect in a very wide orbit binary with an undetected stellar component., Comment: To be published in MNRAS. 9 pages, 13 figures and 8 tables

We report the peculiar chemical abundance patterns of eleven atypical Milky Way (MW) field red giant stars observed by the Apache Point Observatory Galactic Evolution Experiment (APOGEE). These atypical giants exhibit strong Al and N enhancements accompanied by C and Mg depletions, strikingly similar to those observed in the so-called second-generation (SG) stars of globular clusters (GCs). Remarkably, we find low-Mg abundances ([Mg/Fe]$<$0.0) together with strong Al and N overabundances in the majority (5/7) of the metal-rich ([Fe/H]$\gtrsim - 1.0$) sample stars, which is at odds with actual observations of SG stars in Galactic CGs of similar metallicities. This chemical pattern is unique and unprecedented among MW stars, posing urgent questions about its origin. These atypical stars could be former SG stars of dissolved GCs formed with intrinsically lower abundances of Mg and enriched Al (subsequently self-polluted by massive AGB stars) or the result of exotic binary systems. We speculate that the stars Mg-deficiency as well as the orbital properties suggest that they could have an extragalactic origin. Massive stars play a significant role in the chemical and dynamical evolution of galaxies. However, much of their variability, particularly during their evolved supergiant stage, is poorly understood. To understand the variability of evolved massive stars in more detail, we present a study of the O9.2Ib supergiant $\zeta$ Ori Aa, the only currently confirmed supergiant to host a magnetic field. We have obtained two-color space-based BRIght Target Explorer photometry (BRITE) for $\zeta$ Ori Aa during two observing campaigns, as well as simultaneous ground-based, high-resolution optical CHIRON spectroscopy. We perform a detailed frequency analysis to detect and characterize the star's periodic variability. We detect two significant, independent frequencies, their higher harmonics, and combination frequencies: the stellar rotation period $P_{\mathrm{rot}} = 6.82\pm0.18$ d, most likely related to the presence of the stable magnetic poles, and a variation with a period of $10.0\pm0.3$ d attributed to circumstellar environment, also detected in the H$\alpha$ and several He I lines, yet absent in the purely photospheric lines. We confirm the variability with $P_{\mathrm{rot}}$/4, likely caused by surface inhomogeneities, being the possible photospheric drivers of the discrete absorption components. No stellar pulsations were detected in the data. The level of circumstellar activity clearly differs between the two BRITE observing campaigns. We demonstrate that $\zeta$ Ori Aa is a highly variable star with both periodic and non-periodic variations, as well as episodic events. The rotation period we determined agrees well with the spectropolarimetric value from the literature. We report the results of high-resolution ($R \sim 80,000$) spectroscopic observations of the emission-line object HD 85567, which has been classified as a FS CMa type object or a pre-main-sequence star. The main goal is to put more constraints on the object's fundamental parameters as well as on its nature and evolutionary state. Absorption lines in the spectrum of HD 85567 were found similar to those of mid B--type dwarfs and correspond to the following fundamental parameters: T$_{\rm eff} = 15000\pm500$ K, $v \sin i = 31\pm3$ km s$^{-1}$, $\log g \sim 4.0$. The interstellar extinction, A$_V$ $= 0.50\pm0.02$ mag, was measured using the strengths of some diffuse interstellar bands. We also obtained $UBV(RI)_{\rm c}$ images of a $10^{\prime} \times 10^{\prime}$ region around the object. Photometry of projectionally close stars was used to derive an interstellar extinction law in this direction and resulted in a distance of 1300$\pm$100 pc to the object and a luminosity of $\log$ (L/L$_\odot) = 3.3\pm0.2$. We found no significant radial velocity variations of the absorption lines in the spectra of HD 85567 obtained during two month-long periods of time in 2012 and 2015. Our analysis of the spectroscopic and photometric data available for the star led us to a conclusion that it cannot be a pre-main-sequence Herbig Ae/Be star. We argue that the circumstellar gas and dust were produced during the object's evolution as most likely a binary system, which contains an undetected secondary component and is unlikely to be a merger product., Comment: 12 pages, 13 figures, 8 tables, accepted for publication in ApJ

We report the discovery of 24 spectroscopic binary companions to giant stars. We fully constrain the orbital solution for 6 of these systems. We cannot unambiguously derive the orbital elements for the remaining stars because the phase coverage is incomplete. Of these stars, 6 present radial velocity trends that are compatible with long-period brown dwarf companions.The orbital solutions of the 24 binary systems indicate that these giant binary systems have a wide range in orbital periods, eccentricities, and companion masses. For the binaries with restricted orbital solutions, we find a range of orbital periods of between $\sim$ 97-1600 days and eccentricities of between $\sim$ 0.1-0.4. In addition, we studied the metallicity distribution of single and binary giant stars. We computed the metallicity of a total of 395 evolved stars, 59 of wich are in binary systems. We find a flat distribution for these binary stars and therefore conclude that stellar binary systems, and potentially brown dwarfs, have a different formation mechanism than planets.This result is confirmed by recent works showing that extrasolar planets orbiting giants are more frequent around metal-rich stars. Finally, we investigate the eccentricity as a function of the orbital period. We analyzed a total of 130 spectroscopic binaries, including those presented here and systems from the literature. We find that most of the binary stars with periods $\lesssim$ 30 days have circular orbits, while at longer orbital periods we observe a wide spread in their eccentricities.

HD170582 is an interacting binary of the Double Periodic Variable (DPV) type, showing ellipsoidal variability with a period of 16.87 days along with a long photometric cycle of 587 days. It was recently studied by Mennickent et al. (2015), who found a slightly evolved B-type star surrounded by a luminous accretion disc fed by a Roche-lobe overflowing A-type giant. Here we extend their analysis presenting new spectroscopic data and studying the Balmer emission lines. We find orbitally modulated double-peak Halpha and Hbeta emissions whose strength also vary in the long-term. In addition, Doppler maps of the emission lines reveal sites of enhanced line emission in the 1st and 4th velocity quadrants, the first one consistent with the position of one of the bright zones detected by the light curve analysis. We find a difference between Doppler maps at high and low stage of the long cycle; evidence that the emission is optically thicker at high state in the stream-disc impact region, possibly reflecting a larger mass transfer rate. We compare the system parameters with a grid of synthetic binary evolutionary tracks and find the best fitting model. The system is found to be semi-detached, in a conservative Case-B mass transfer stage, with age 7.68E7 yr and mass transfer rate 1.6E-6 Msun/yr. We report on detection, from observations obtained with the APOGEE spectroscopic survey, of a metal-poor ([Fe/H] $= -1.3$ dex) field giant star with an extreme Mg-Al abundance ratio ([Mg/Fe] $= -0.31$ dex; [Al/Fe] $= 1.49$ dex). Such low Mg/Al ratios are seen only among the second-generation population of globular clusters, and are not present among Galactic disk field stars. The light element abundances of this star, 2M16011638-1201525, suggest that it could have been born in a globular cluster. We explore several origin scenarios, in particular studying the orbit of the star to check the probability of it being kinematically related to known globular clusters. We performed simple orbital integrations assuming the estimated distance of 2M16011638-1201525 and the available six-dimensional phase-space coordinates of 63 globular clusters, looking for close encounters in the past with a minimum distance approach within the tidal radius of each cluster. We found a very low probability that 2M16011638-1201525 was ejected from most globular clusters; however, we note that the best progenitor candidate to host this star is globular cluster $\omega$ Centauri (NGC 5139). Our dynamical investigation demonstrates that 2M16011638-1201525 reaches a distance $|Z_{max}| < 3 $ kpc from the Galactic plane and a minimum and maximum approach to the Galactic center of $R_{min}<0.62$ kpc and $R_{max}<7.26$ kpc in an eccentric ($e\sim0.53$) and retrograde orbit. Since the extreme chemical anomaly of 2M16011638-1201525 has also been observed in halo field stars, this object could also be considered a halo contaminant, likely been ejected into the Milky Way disk from the halo. We conclude that, 2M16011638-20152 is also kinematically consistent with the disk but chemically consistent with halo field stars., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ

We investigate the luminous star ELHC 10 located in the bar of the Large Magellanic Cloud, concluding that it is a SB1 long-period eclipsing binary where the main eclipse is produced by an opaque structure hiding the secondary star. For the more luminous component we determine an effective temperature of 6500 $\pm$ 250 $K$, log\,g = 1.0 $\pm$ 0.5 and luminosity 5970 L$_{\sun}$. From the radial velocities of their photospheric lines we calculate a mass function of 7.37 $\pm$ 0.55 M$_{\sun}$. Besides Balmer and forbidden N II emission, we find splitting of metallic lines, characterized by strong discrete absorption components (DACs), alternatively seen at the blue and red side of the photospheric spectrum. These observations hardly can be interpreted in terms of an structured atmosphere but might reflect mass streams in an interacting binary. The primary shows signatures of s-process nucleosynthesis and might be a low-mass post-AGB star with a rare evolutionary past if the binary is semi-detached. The peak separation and constancy of radial velocity in H$\alpha$ suggest that most of the Balmer emission comes from a circumbinary disc., Comment: 16 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

PSR J1357$-$6429 is a young radio pulsar that was detected in X-rays and $\gamma$-rays. We present the high spatial resolution near-infrared imaging of the pulsar field in $J$, $H$ and $K_s$ bands obtained with the VLT/NaCo using the Adaptive Optic system. We found a faint source at the most precise pulsar radio position which we propose as the pulsar near-infrared counterpart candidate. It is confidently detected in the $J$ and $K_s$ bands, with $J$ = 23.51$\pm$0.24 and $K_s$ = 21.82$\pm$0.25. There is a hint of the source in the $H$ band with an upper limit $H$ $>$ 22.8. The dereddened source fluxes are compatible with the extrapolation of the pulsar X-ray spectrum towards the near-infrared. If the candidate is the true counterpart, by this property PSR J1357$-$6429 would be similar to the nearby middle-age pulsar PSR B0656+14. In this case, both pulsars demonstrate an unusually high near-infrared efficiency relative to the X-ray efficiency as compared to other pulsars detected in both ranges., Comment: 6 pages, 4 figures, 3 tables

W Serpentids and Double Periodic Variables (DPVs) are candidates for close interacting binaries in a non-conservative evolutionary stage; while W Serpentids are defined by high-excitation ultraviolet emission lines present during most orbital phases, and by usually showing variable orbital periods, DPVs are characterized by a long photometric cycle lasting roughly 33 times the (practically constant) orbital period. We report the discovery of 7 new Galactic DPVs, increasing the number of known DPVs in our Galaxy by 50%. We find that DPVs are tangential-impact systems, i.e. their primaries have radii barely larger than the critical Lubow-Shu radius. These systems are expected to show transient discs, but we find that they host stable discs with radii smaller than the tidal radius. Among tangential-impact systems including DPVs and semi-detached Algols, only DPVs have primaries with masses between 7 and 10 $M_{\odot}$. We find that DPVs are in a Case-B mass transfer stage with donor masses between 1 and 2 M$_{\odot}$ and with primaries resembling Be stars. W Serpentids are impact and non-impact systems, their discs extend until the last non-intersecting orbit and show a larger range of stellar mass and mass ratio than DPVs. Infrared photometry reveals significant color excesses in many DPVs and W Serpentids, usually larger for the latter ones, suggesting variable amounts of circumstellar matter., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 12 tables. We present a spectroscopic and photometric study of the Double Period Variable HD170582. Based on the study of the ASAS V-band light curve we determine an improved orbital period of 16.87177 $\pm$ 0.02084 days and a long period of 587 days. We disentangled the light curve into an orbital part, determining ephemerides and revealing orbital ellipsoidal variability with unequal maxima, and a long cycle, showing quasi-sinusoidal changes with amplitude $\Delta V$= 0.1 mag. Assuming synchronous rotation for the cool stellar component and semi-detached configuration we find a cool evolved star of $M_{2}$ = 1.9 $\pm$ 0.1 $M_{\odot}$, $T_{2}$ = 8000 $\pm$ 100 $K$ and $R_{2}$ = 15.6 $\pm$ 0.2 $R_{\odot}$, and an early B-type dwarf of $M_{1}$ = 9.0 $\pm$ 0.2 $M_{\odot}$. The B-type star is surrounded by a geometrically and optically thick accretion disc of radial extension 20.8 $\pm$ 0.3 $R_{\odot}$ contributing about 35% to the system luminosity at the $V$ band. Two extended regions located at opposite sides of the disc rim, and hotter than the disc by 67% and 46%, fit the light curve asymmetries. The system is seen under inclination 67.4 $\pm$ 0.4 degree and it is found at a distance of 238 $\pm$ 10 pc. Specially interesting is the double line nature of HeI 5875; two absorption components move in anti-phase during the orbital cycle; they can be associated with the shock regions revealed by the photometry. The radial velocity of one of the HeI 5875 components closely follows the donor radial velocity, suggesting that the line is formed in a wind emerging near the stream-disc interacting region., Comment: 16 pages, 11 tables and 11 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a study of the evolutionary stage of the interacting binary and Double Periodic Variable AU Monocerotis. A multi-parametric Chi2 minimization is made between the observed parameters and those predicted by the grid of non-conservative and conservative evolutionary models by Van Rensbergen et al., finding the model that best represents the current stellar and system parameters. According to this model, the system started with initial masses 4 M_sun and 3.6 M_sun and orbital period 3.0 days, 196 million years ago, and at present undergoes a Case-B mass-exchange episode. This evolutionary stage is consistent with the reported existence of a circumprimary accretion disk. However, the implied high mass transfer rate contrasts with the absence of significant orbital period change if the mass exchange is conservative. We show that this can occur if the system has recently entered in a non-conservative stage of mass transfer and the efficiency of mass and angular momentum loss satisfy certain conditions., Comment: 21 pages, 5 figures, 2 tables

To progress in the comprehension of the double periodic variable (DPV) phenomenon, we analyse a series of optical spectra of the DPV system DQ Velorum during much of its long-term cycle. In addition, we investigate the evolutionary history of DQ Vel using theoretical evolutionary models to obtain the best representation for the current observed stellar and orbital parameters of the binary. We investigate the evolution of DQ Vel through theoretical evolutionary models to estimate the age and the mass transfer rate which are compared with those of its twin V393 Scorpii. Donor subtracted spectra covering around 60% of the long-term cycle, allow us to investigate time-modulated spectral variations of the gainer star plus the disc. We compare the observed stellar parameters of the system with a grid of theoretical evolutionary tracks computed under a conservative and a non-conservative evolution regime. We have found that the EW of Balmer and helium lines in the donor subtracted spectra are modulated with the long-term cycle. We observe a strenghtening in the EWs in all analysed spectral features at the minimum of the long-term cycle which might be related to an extra line emission during the maximum of the long-term variability. Difference spectra obtained at the secondary eclipse support this scenario. We have found that a non-conservative evolutionary model is a better representation for the current observed properties of the system. The best evolutionary model suggests that DQ Vel has an age of 7.40 x 10^{7} yr and is currently in a low mass transfer rate (-9.8x10^{-9} Msun/yr) stage, after a mass transfer burst episode. Comparing the evolutionary stages of DQ Vel and V393 Sco we observed that the former is an older system with a lower mass transfer rate. Near-IR data of Classical Novae contain useful information about the ejected gas mass and the thermal emission by dust formed during eruption, and provide independent methods to classify the objects according to the colour of their progenitors, and the fading rate and features seen after eruption. The VISTA Variables in the Via Lactea survey (VVV) is a near-IR ESO Public Survey mapping the MW bulge and southern plane. Data taken during 2010-2011 covered the entire area in the JHKs bands plus some epochs in Ks-band of the ongoing VVV variability campaign. We used the novae list provided by VSX/AAVSO catalogue to search for all objects within the VVV area. We used the VVV data to create a near-IR catalogue of the known Galactic novae in the 562 sq.deg. area covered by VVV. The VVV near-IR catalogue of novae contains JHKs photometry of 93 objects completed as of December 2012. We also checked in the ongoing VVV variability campaign for the light-curves of novae that erupted in the last years. VVV images can also be used to discover and study novae by searching for the expanding shell. Since objects are seen at different distances and reddening levels, the colour-magnitude and colour-colour diagrams show the novae spread in magnitude as well as in colour. Dereddened colours and reddening-free indices were used with caution and cannot be a good approach in all cases since the distance and spectral features prevent more conclusive results for some extreme objects. Light-curves for some recent novae are presented. Thanks to its high spatial resolution in the near-IR, and large Ks-range, the VVV survey can be a major contributor for the search and study of novae in the most crowded and high-extinction regions of the Milky Way. We modeled the V-band light curve of beta Lyrae with two stellar components plus an optically thick accretion disc around the gainer assuming a semidetached configuration. We present the results of this calculation, giving physical parameters for the stars and the disc, along with general system dimensions. We discuss the evolutionary stage of the system finding the best match with one of the evolutionary models of Van Rensbergen et al. According to this model, the system is found at age 2.30E7 years, in the phase of rapid mass transfer, the second one in the life of this binary, in a Case-B mass-exchange stage with dM/dt = 1.58E-5 Msun/year. This result, along with the reported rate of orbital period change and observational evidence of mass loss, suggests that the mass transfer in beta Lyrae, is quasi-conservative. The best model indicates that beta Lyrae finished a relatively large mass loss episode 31400 years ago. The light curve model that best fit the observations has inclination angle i = 81 degree, M1 = 13.2 Msun, M2 = 3.0 Msun, R1 = 6.0 Rsun and R2 = 15.2 Rsun. The disc contributes 22% to the total V-band light curve at quadrature, has a radius of 28.3 Rsun and the outer edge thickness is 11.2 Rsun. The light curve model is significantly better with two bright regions in the disc rim with temperatures 10% and 20% higher than the disc outer edge temperature. To add to the growing collection of well-studied double periodic variables (DPVs) we have carried out the first spectroscopic and photometric analysis of the eclipsing binary DQ Velorum to obtain its main physical stellar and orbital parameters. Combining spectroscopic and photometric observations that cover several orbital cycles allows us to estimate the stellar properties of the binary components and the orbital parameters. We also searched for circumstellar material around the more massive star. We separated DQ Velorum composite spectra and measured radial velocities with an iterative method for double spectroscopic binaries. We obtained the radial velocity curves and calculated the spectroscopic mass ratio. We compared our single-lined spectra with a grid of synthetic spectra and estimated the temperature of the stars. We modeled the V-band light curve with a fitting method based on the simplex algorithm, which includes an accretion disc. To constrain the main stellar parameters we fixed the mass ratio and donor temperature to the values obtained by our spectroscopic analysis. We obtain donor and gainer masses, the radii, and temperatures for the stellar components. We find that DQ Vel is a semi-detached system consisting of a B3V gainer and an A1III donor star plus an extended accretion disc around the gainer. The disc is filling 89% of the gainer Roche lobe and it has a concave shape that is thicker at its edge than at its centre. We find a significant sub-orbital frequency of 0.19 d^{-1} in the residuals of the V-band light curve, which we interpret as a pulsation of an slowly pulsating B-type (SPB) of a gainer star. We have started a project to investigate the connection of post-novae with the population of cataclysmic variables. Our first steps in this concern improving the sample of known post-novae and their properties. Here we present the recovery and/or confirmation of the old novae MT Cen, V812 Cen, V655 CrA, IL Nor, V2109 Oph, V909 Sgr, V2572 Sgr, and V728 Sco. Principal photometric and spectroscopic properties of these systems are discussed. We find that V909 Sgr is a probable magnetic CV, and that V728 Sco is a high-inclination system. We furthermore suggest that the two candidate novae V734 Sco and V1310 Sgr have been misclassified and instead are Mira variables., Comment: 11 pages, 7 figures (some of them in lower resolution), to be published in MNRAS

Mennickent et al.and Sabogal et al.identified a large number of Classical Be (CBe) candidates in the L&SMC based on their photometric variability using the OGLEII database. They classified these stars into four different groups based on the appearance of their variability. We studied the infrared properties of the sample as well as the spectroscopic properties of a subsample. We cross-correlated the optical sample with the IRSF catalog to obtain the J, H, Ks magnitudes of all the four types of stars in the L&SMC. Spectra of 120 stars belonging to the types 1, 2 and 3 were analysed to study their spectral properties. Among the four types, the type 4 stars is the dominant group. The NIR colour-colour diagrams suggest that the type 4 stars in the LMC have a subclass, which is not found in our Galaxy or in the SMC. The main type 4 sample which is \sim 49% of the total sample has NIR properties similar to the Galactic CBe stars and the SMC type 4 stars. Though the new subclass of type 4 stars have high E(B - V) \sim 0.75, they are not located close to regions with high reddening. The type 3 stars (\sim 6% & 7.3% in the L&SMC) are found to have large H{\alpha} EW in the SMC and some are found to have large NIR excess. This small fraction of stars are unlikely to be CBe stars. The type 2 stars are found in larger fraction in the SMC, when compared to the LMC. The spectroscopic and the NIR properties suggest that these could be CBe stars. The spectroscopic sample of type 1 stars which show H{\alpha} in emission and confirmed as CBe stars are more abundant in the SMC by a factor of 2.6. If the effect of metallicity is to cause more CBe stars in the SMC, when compared to the LMC, then type 1, type 2 and type 4 stars follow this rule, with an enhancement of 2.6, 2.4 and 1.3 respectively., Comment: 14 figures, 12 tables, Accepted for Publication in MNRAS

(Abridged) PSR J1357-6429 is a Vela-like radio pulsar that has been recently detected in X-rays and gamma-rays. It powers a compact tail-like X-ray pulsar wind nebula and X-ray-radio plerion associated with an extended TeV source HESS J1356-645. We present our deep optical observations with the Very Large Telescope to search for an optical counterpart of the pulsar and its nebula. We detect a point-like source in V, R, and I bands whose position is within the 1-sigma error circle of the X-ray position of the pulsar, and whose colours are distinct from those of ordinary stars. We consider it as a candidate optical counterpart of the pulsar. If it is indeed the counterpart, its 5-sigma offset from the radio pulsar position, measured about 9 yr earlier, implies that the transverse velocity of the pulsar is in the range of 1600--2000 km s^{-1} at the distance of 2--2.5 kpc, making it the fastest moving pulsar known. The direction of the estimated proper motion coincides with the extension of the pulsar's X-ray tail, suggesting that this is a jet. The tentative optical luminosity and efficiency of the pulsar are similar to those of the Vela pulsar, which also supports the optical identification. However, the candidate undergoes an unusually steep dereddened flux increase towards the infrared with a spectral index of about 5, that is not typical of optical pulsars. It implies a strong double-knee spectral break in the pulsar emission between the optical and X-rays. The reasons for the spectral steepness are unclear. It may be caused by a nebula knot projected onto the jet and strongly overlapping with the pulsar, as observed for the Crab, where the knot has a significantly steeper spectrum than the pulsar. We find no other signs of the pulsar nebula in the optical. V393 Scorpii is a bright Galactic Double Periodic Variable showing a long photometric cycle of approx. 253 days. We present new VIJK photometric time series for V393 Scorpii along with the analysis of ASAS V-band photometry. We disentangled all light curves into the orbital and long cycle components. The ASAS V-band orbital light curve was modeled with two stellar components plus a circumprimary optically thick disc assuming a semidetached configuration. We present the results of this calculation, giving physical parameters for the stars and the disc, along with general system dimensions. Our results are in close agreement with those previously found by Mennickent et al. (2010) from IR spectroscopy and the modeling of the spectral energy distribution. The stability of the orbital light curve suggests that the stellar + disc configuration remains stable during the long cycle. Therefore, the long cycle should be produced by an additional variable and not-eclipsed emitting structure. We discuss the evolutionary stage of the system finding the best match with one of the evolutionary models of van Rensbergen et al. (2008). According to these models, the system is found to be after an episode of fast mass exchange that transferred 4 M_sun from the donor to the gainer in a period of 400.000 years. We argue that a significant fraction of this mass has not been accreted by the gainer but remains in an optically thick massive (about 2 M_sun) disc-like surrounding pseudo-photosphere whose luminosity is not driven by viscosity but probably by reprocessed stellar radiation.
