Abstract Stratified water columns are often found in lakes and oceans. Stratifications result from differences in density due to salt concentration, temperature, solid content and oxygenation. The stability of stratifications affects bioactivity, sedimentation, contaminant transport and environmental remediation. This study investigates the evolution of 6 stratified water columns created by differences in salinity, suspended minerals and the presence of a bottom heat source. We use acoustic wave reflection, photography, and both electrical conductivity and temperature profiles to track changes in stratification. Results show that multiple concurrent processes emerge across layers in otherwise quiescent water bodies. Dissimilar chemo-thermo conditions give rise to chemical and thermal diffusion, convection, and double-diffusion convection. When stratification involves suspended particles, interlayer processes include diffusiophoresis, flocculation/aggregation, sedimentation, osmosis, and chemo-consolidation; in this case, the specific surface and surface charge of suspended particles, and the salt concentration in contiguous layers determine aggregation-sedimentation-consolidation patterns. The interlayer transition zone acts as a high-pass filter that preferentially reflects low-frequency long-wavelength P-waves; invasive thermal and electrical conductivity probes provide complementary information and may identify stratification even when it is undetected by acoustic signals.

Driven by the rapid advancement and practical implementation of biomaterials, fabrication technologies, and artificial intelligence, artificial neuron devices and systems have emerged as a promising technology for interpreting and transmitting neurological signals. These systems are equipped with multi-modal bio-integrable sensing capabilities, and can facilitate the benefits of neurological monitoring and modulation through accurate physiological recognition. In this article, we provide an overview of recent progress in artificial neuron technology, with a particular focus on the high-tech applications made possible by innovations in material engineering, new designs and technologies, and potential application areas. As a rapidly expanding field, these advancements have a promising potential to revolutionize personalized healthcare, human enhancement, and a wide range of other applications, making artificial neuron devices the future of brain-machine interfaces.

BackgroundDysphagia is a common complication of stroke that can result in serious consequences. In recent years, more and more papers on post-stroke dysphagia have been published in various journals. However, there is still a lack of bibliometric analysis of post-stroke dysphagia. This study visually analyzes the global research situation of post-stroke dysphagia from 2013 to 2022, aiming to explore the current research status, frontier trends, and research hotspots in this field.MethodsArticles and reviews relevant to post-stroke dysphagia were obtained and retrieved from the Web of Science core collection database in the last 10 years (from 2013 to 2022). CiteSpace and Microsoft Excel 2019 were used for bibliographic analysis.ResultsA total of 1,447 articles were included in the analysis. The number of publications showed an overall upward trend, from 72 in 2013 to 262 in 2022. The most influential authors, institutions, journals, and countries were Hamdy S, University of London, Dysphagia, and the People's Republic of China. An analysis of keywords and the literature indicated that current studies in the field of post-stroke dysphagia focused on dysphagia and aspiration, dysphagia classification, dysphagia rehabilitation, and daily living.ConclusionThis bibliometric analysis reveals the latest advancements and emerging trends in the field of post-stroke dysphagia, spanning the years 2013 to 2022. It highlights the paramount importance of conducting large-scale randomized controlled trials examining the efficacy of dysphagia screening protocols and non-invasive intervention techniques in improving the quality of life for these patients. Such research efforts hold significant academic implications for the development of evidence-based treatment strategies in this field.

The finned-tube heat exchanger is the core part of an air conditioning system. Its heat exchange performance directly affects the energy consumption and efficiency of the air conditioner. The shortage and rising price of copper have led to increasing replacement of copper tubes with aluminum tubes in finned-tube heat exchangers. This paper studies two kinds of such heat exchangers, one consisting of copper tubes and aluminum fins and the other consisting of aluminum tubes and aluminum fins. The influences of the different base tube materials on heat transfer are compared and analyzed in terms of heat transfer strength and cost per unit heat transfer. The results show that the heat transfer and heat transfer coefficient increase with increasing inlet wind speed. Under different inlet wind speeds, the heat transfer and heat transfer coefficient of the finned-tube heat exchanger with aluminum tubes are 4%–12% and 7%%–9% lower than those of an identically structured heat exchanger with copper tubes, respectively. The aluminum-aluminum exchanger achieves 67% higher heat transfer than that of the copper-aluminum exchanger at only 8% of the cost. These results are significant for guiding the development and application of finned-tube heat exchangers.

For the object recognition in lightless environments, the authors propose the olfactory-tactile machine learning approach, inspired by the star-nose mole’s neural system. They show how bionic flexible sensor arrays allow for real-time acquisition of object’s form and odor when touching it.

Frequent and accurate object detection based on remote sensing images is an encouraging approach for monitoring dynamic of the interest object on earth surface. Transformer-based object detection was recently developed to cope with the tradeoff dilemma between large computation load and accuracy sacrifice confronted by region-proposal-based and regression-based object detection, and its self-attention mechanism can provide a global understanding that has potential ability for reasoning the location relationship within sparsely heterogeneously distributed geospatial objects. However, transformer-based object detection is essentially weak at modeling local feature hierarchy to compensate for the large scale variation of geospatial object, and it is extremely difficult to train due to the lack of inductive bias, resulting in a slow convergence. To overcome the problem, this article proposed a Dual network structure with InterweAved Global-local feature hierarchy based on the TRansformer architecture (DIAG-TR), to alleviate the incompatibility of global and local feature form, and hierarchically embed the local features into global representations. Besides, a learnable anchor box is incorporated into the positional query in the decoder part to provide a spatial prior, which can accelerate convergence. The proposed DIAG-TR is validated on the widely used optical remote sensing image DIOR dataset, and the results demonstrate that the global-local feature hierarchy contributes 3.4% mean average precision compared to the original transformer-based method, and the convergence time is shortened by 2.5-fold. State-of-the-art methods are also participated as benchmark for comparison, and DIAG-TR outperforms baseline method by 8.9%, which proves that DIAG-TR has great potential in earth observation community.

Hypertension is a complex disease which is mainly influenced by genetic factors. Recently, genome-wide association study (GWAS) found three novel endothelial dysfunction-related sites: Vascular endothelial growth factor A (VEGFA) rs9472135, Faciogenital dysplasia 5 (FGD5) rs11128722, Zinc Finger C3HC-type Containing 1 (ZC3HC1) rs11556924. Endothelial dysfunction is one of the early events in pathophysiology of essential hypertension. To investigate the association of endothelial dysfunction-related genes with essential hypertension, we conducted a case-control study of 431 patients with hypertension and 345 controls. The polymorphisms were detected using Taqman Probe. The alleles and genotypes of ZC3HC1 rs11556924 and VEGFA rs9472135 were not statistically different between the two groups, while the allele of FGD5 rs11128722 was different [P = 0.045, OR = 1.265, 95% CI = (1.009–1.586)], especially in the male [P = 0.035, OR = 1.496, 95% CI = (1.037–2.158)]. Analyzing the different of genotype distribution of 3 SNPs in the two groups under different genetic models, the genotypes of FGD5 rs11128722 showed difference in male under dominant model [P = 0.049, OR = 1.610, 95% CI = (1.018–2.544)]. The polymorphism of FGD5 rs11128722 had a significant difference in Body Mass Index (BMI) among different genotypes; In the additive genetic model, BMI of GA genotype was higher than that of GG (P = 0.038); GA + AA was higher than GG in the dominant genetic model (P = 0.011). In our study, we found that the polymorphisms of VEGFA rs9472135 and ZC3HC1 rs11556924 may not significantly associated with the risk of essential hypertension, and FGD5 rs11128722 may increase the risk of it, especially in elderly men.

It is incontrovertible that the bioelectronic enabled bio‐integrated system is one of the most promising technologies in the upcoming decades. Driven by the great versatility of the emerging artificial intelligence, machine‐learning‐supported bio‐integrated intelligent sensing system (BISS) is capable of achieving data processing and intelligent recognition while conducting multimodal human‐centered sensing; such facilitated systems capitalize the benefits of both bioelectronics and supporting algorithm, enabling accurate physiological/somatosensory recognition at the cost of certain computing resources. Herein, an overview of recent progress in BISS is presented, with an emphasis on high‐tech applications enabled by innovations in combining flexible bioelectronic sensors with supporting algorithmic systems. The main applications can be divided into three categories, including implantable, skin‐mounted, and wearable BISS, which have different requirements for materials, fabrication methods, and algorithms, respectively. Advances in these areas open new avenues for employing BISS as future human–machine interfaces for personalized healthcare, human enhancement, as well as other broad applications.

The sensitivity and selectivity profiles of gas sensors are always changed by sensor drifting, sensor aging, and the surroundings (e.g., temperature and humidity changes), which lead to a serious decline in gas recognition accuracy or even invalidation. To address this issue, the practical solution is to retrain the network to maintain performance, leveraging its rapid, incremental online learning capacity. In this paper, we develop a bio-inspired spiking neural network (SNN) to recognize nine types of flammable and toxic gases, which supports few-shot class-incremental learning, and can be retrained quickly with a new gas at a low accuracy cost. Compared with gas recognition approaches such as support vector machine (SVM), k-nearest neighbor (KNN), principal component analysis (PCA) +SVM, PCA+KNN, and artificial neural network (ANN), our network achieves the highest accuracy of 98.75% in five-fold cross-validation for identifying nine types of gases, each with five different concentrations. In particular, the proposed network has a 5.09% higher accuracy than that of other gas recognition algorithms, which validates its robustness and effectiveness for real-life fire scenarios.

Abstract Progress toward intelligent human–robotic interactions requires monitoring sensors that are mechanically flexible, facile to implement, and able to harness recognition capability under harsh environments. Conventional sensing methods have been divided for human‐side collection or robot‐side feedback and are not designed with these criteria in mind. However, the iontronic polymer is an example of a general method that operates properly on both human skin (commonly known as skin electronics or iontronics) and the machine/robotic surface. Here, a unique iontronic composite (silk protein/glycerol/Ca(II) ion) and supportive molecular mechanism are developed to simultaneously achieve high conductivity (around 6 kΩ at 50 kHz), self‐healing (within minutes), strong stretchability (around 1000%), high strain sensitivity and transparency, and universal adhesiveness across a broad working temperature range (−40–120 °C). Those merits facilitate the development of iontronic sensing and the implementation of damage‐resilient robotic manipulation. Combined with a machine learning algorithm and specified data collection methods, the system is able to classify 1024 types of human and robot hand gestures under challenging scenarios and to offer excellent object recognition with an accuracy of 99.7%.

Abstract Background HOXD9, a Hox family member, is involved in cancer growth and metastasis. But, its regulation mechanism at the molecular level particularly in colorectal cancer (CRC), is mostly unknown. Methods The HOXD9 protein expression levels were analyzed using immunofluorescence, immunohistochemistry (IHC) assays, and western blot. The in vivo and in vitro roles of HOXD9 in CRC were determined using colony formation and EdU incorporation, CCK‐8, wound scratch and transwell invasion assay, and animal models. Results Expression of HOXD9 was higher in CRC than in matched healthy tissues. High expression of HOXD9 has significantly associated with the American Joint Committee on Cancer (AJCC) stages, tumor differentiation, lymph node metastasis, and other serious invasions, and it had a poor prognosis. In vitro, HOXD9 encouraged proliferation, movement and EMT processes in cells of CRC. Also, TGF‐β1 promoted the expression of HOXD9 and this effect was dependent on the dose and downregulation of HOXD9 repressed TGF‐β1 ‐induced EMT. In vivo, HOXD9 promoted the invasive and metastasis of CRC cells via orthotopic implantation. Conclusions The ectopic expression of HOXD9 promoted the invasion metastasis in cells of the colorectal tumor by induction of EMT in vitro and vivo.

Magnetostrictive thin-film coated Surface Acoustic Wave (SAW) devices were promising for sensing magnetic field owing to their superior features as micro-size, fast response, and high sensitivity originated from the magnetostrictive effect. However, the magnetostriction nature in magnetostrictive thin-film causes significantly mechanical fatigue in service, deteriorating the sensor performances. In this work, the fatigue phenomenon in magnetostrictive coating was underlined by characterizing the prepared FeCo thin-film coated magnetic device cyclically. Obvious shedding was observed in FeCo coating after cyclic testing and the magnetic-sensitivity decreases significantly. One of the reasons is the weak adhesion of FeCo thin-film towards the substrate. As an available way allowing enhancement of adhesion, a Cr thin-film was employed as the transition-layer to weaken the mechanical fatigue. However, it accompanied by the issue of the reduced magnetostrictive coefficient and the obstruction in magnetostrain-tranfer to piezoelectric substrate. As a result, the slump in sensitivity was observed. To address such issues, a design of dotted-pattern with Cr transition layer was employed to build the SAW based magnetic-device. High magnetic-sensitivity and excellent long-term stability were achieved because of the release of coercive force in FeCo dots and enhancement of the FeCo adhesion to the substrate.

The revolutionary and pioneering advancements of silk materials in recent years have provided numerous opportunities for the great trend of sustainable green energy. Working as an eco‐friendly replacement for conventional energy harvester or storage device, silk‐based energy sources that get intensive attention are regarded as new solutions in flexible human‐integrated applications. Compared with other synthetic polymers, silk materials present outstanding biocompatibility, biodegradability, and many other attractive properties owing to the natural protein composition, various modification methods, large‐scale green production, and superior fabrication techniques. Herein, recent progress and ongoing challenges posed by the utilization and translation of silk materials in green energy application are discussed.

Abstract Background The transcription factor HOXD9 is one of the members of the HOX family, which plays an important role in neoplastic processes. However, the role of HOXD9 in the growth and metastasis of gastric cancer (GC) remains to be elucidated. Methods In vitro functional role of HOXD9 and RURY3 in GC cells was determined using the TMA-based immunohistochemistry, western blot, EdU incorporation, gelatin zymography, luciferase, chromatin Immunoprecipitation (ChIP) and cell invasion assays. In vivo tumor growth and metastasis were conducted in nude mice. Results HOXD9 is overexpressed in GC cells and tissues. The high expression of HOXD9 was correlated with poor survival in GC patients. Functionally, HOXD9 expression significantly promoted the proliferation, invasion and migration of GC cells. Mechanically, HOXD9 directly associated with the RUFY3 promoter to increase the transcriptional activity of RUFY3. Inhibition of RUFY3 attenuated the proliferation, migration and invasiveness of HOXD9-overexpressing GC cells in vitro and in vivo. Moreover, both HOXD9 and RUFY3 were highly expressed in cancer cells but not in normal gastric tissues, with their expressions being positively correlated. Conclusions The evidence presented here suggests that the HOXD9-RUFY3 axis promotes the development and progression of human GC.

Abstract Background The deubiquitinating enzyme ubiquitin-specific protease 3 (USP3) plays a crucial role in numerous biological processes. The aberrant expression of USP3 may have an important role in tumor development. However, the mechanism by which USP3 promotes gastric cancer (GC) metastasis remains largely unknown. Methods Effects of USP3 on the progression of GC in vivo and in vitro and the potential underlying mechanisms have been investigated utilizing proteomics, RT-PCR, western blotting, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence, cell invasion and migration assays and xenograft tumor models. Results USP3 expression was upregulated in GC compared with matched normal tissues and was predictive of poor survival. USP3 also promoted migration and epithelial-to-mesenchymal transition (EMT) in GC cells. Moreover, TGF-β1 induced USP3 expression, and USP3 knockdown inhibited TGF-β1-induced EMT. Furthermore, we utilized Isobaric Tag for Relative and Absolute Quantitation (iTRAQ) to identify differentially expressed proteins in USP3-overexpressing cells compared with control cells. Importantly, we found that SUZ12 is indispensable for USP3-mediated oncogenic activity in GC. We observed that USP3 interacted with and stabilized SUZ12 via deubiquitination. SUZ12 knockdown inhibited USP3-induced migration and invasion, as well as EMT in GC cells. Examination of clinical samples confirmed that USP3 expression was positively correlated with SUZ12 protein expression and that the levels of USP3 or SUZ12 protein were negatively correlated with the levels of E-cadherin protein. Conclusions These findings identify USP3 as a critical regulator. The USP3-SUZ12 axis might promote tumor progression and could be a potential therapeutic candidate for human GC.

Background/Aims: The CCDC43 gene is conserved in human, rhesus monkey, mouse and zebrafish. Bioinformatics studies have demonstrated the abnormal expression of CCDC43 gene in colorectal cancer (CRC). However, the role and molecular mechanism of CCDC43 in CRC remain unknown. Methods: The functional role of CCDC43 and FOXK1 in epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) was determined using immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry, western blot, EdU incorporation, luciferase, chromatin Immunoprecipitation (ChIP) and cell invasion assays. Results: The CCDC43 gene was overexpressed in human CRC. High expression of CCDC43 protein was associated with tumor progression and poor prognosis in patients with CRC. Moreover, the induction of EMT by CCDC43 occurred through TGF-β signaling. Furthermore, a positive correlation between the expression patterns of CCDC43 and FOXK1 was observed in CRC cells. Promoter assays demonstrated that FOXK1 directly bound and activated the human CCDC43 gene promoter. In addition, CCDC43 was necessary for FOXK1- mediated EMT and metastasis in vitro and vivo. Taken together, this work identified that CCDC43 promoted EMT and was a direct transcriptional target of FOXK1 in CRC cells. Conclusion: FOXK1-CCDC43 axis might be helpful to develop the drugs for the treatment of CRC.

Diabetes has been a disease of public health concern for a number of decades. It was in the 1930s when scientists made an interesting discovery that the disease is actually divided into two types as some patients were insensitive to insulin treatment then. Type 2 Diabetes which happens to be the non-insulin dependent one is the most common form of the disease and is caused by the interaction between genetic and non-genetic factors. Despite conflicting results, numerous studies have identified genetic and non-genetic factors associated with this common type of diabetes. This review has summarized literature on some genes and non-genetic factors which have been identified to be associated with Type 2 diabetes. It has sourced literature from PubMed, Web of Science and Medline without any limitation to regions, publication types, or languages. The paper has started with the introduction, the play of non-genetic factors, the impact of genes in general, and ended with the interaction between some genes and environmental factors.

Background/Aims: Metastasis is the primary cause of colorectal cancer (CRC)-related death. However, the molecular mechanisms underlying metastasis in CRC remain unclear. Methods: We evaluated mRNA and protein expression levels by quantitative real-time reverse transcription PCR, western blotting, immunofluorescence, tissue microarrays, and immunohistochemistry assays. We also assessed the migration and invasion abilities of CRC cells in vitro by wound healing assays, invasion and migration assays, western blot analysis, and immunofluorescence. Tumor metastasis was evaluated in nude mice in vivo. Results: A positive correlation was observed between the expression patterns of Forkhead box k1 (FOXK1) and Snail in CRC. Luciferase reporter and chromatin immunoprecipitation assays demonstrated that Snail directly bound to and activated the human FOXK1 gene promoter. Moreover, the Snail-FOXK1 axis promote epithelial mesenchymal transition (EMT)-mediated CRC cell invasion and metastasis. FOXK1 and Snail expression levels were correlated with tumor progression and served as significant predictors of overall survival in patients with CRC. Furthermore, overexpression of FOXK1 induced the EMT by upregulating the expression of cysteine-rich angiogenic inducer 61 (Cyr61). Luciferase assays showed that Cyr61 was a direct transcriptional target of FOXK1. Down regulation of Cyr61 decreased FOXK1-enhanced “CRC cell” migration, invasion, and metastasis. Additionally, FOXK1 expression was positively correlated with Cyr61 expression and was associated with poor prognosis. Conclusions: The Snail/FOXK1/Cyr61 signaling axis regulates the EMT and metastasis of CRC.

A surface acoustic wave (SAW) temperature sensor with high accuracy was developed and wirelessly characterized in this work. The sensing chip with reflective delay line pattern was simulated using typical coupling of modes (COM) model and prepared by the standard photolithographic technique. Sharp reflection peaks with high signal-to-noise (SNR) were observed from the developed sensing chip operating at 433 MHz. Referring to the frequency-stepped continuous wave (FSCW)-based transceiver, planar antennas, and the developed SAW chip, the wireless and passive temperature sensor system was built. Adaptive Least Mean Square (LMS) algorithm was used for the first time in the SAW sensor signal processing to significantly improve the system SNR, and the corresponding phase fluctuation is down to only 3°. High temperature sensitivity of 36.5 °C and very high accuracy of ±0.2 °C in the range of −30 °C∼100 °C were achieved successfully by wireless measurement.

A surface acoustic wave (SAW) device with an aluminum nitride (AlN) composite structure of Al2O3/IDTs/AlN/Metal/Si was proposed for sensing at extreme high-temperature in this work. Optimization allowing determination of optimal design parameters for SAW devices was conducted using the typical coupling of modes (COM) model. The SAW propagation characteristics in the layered structure were investigated theoretically by employing the finite element method (FEM). Multiple acoustic-wave modes that occurred in the AlN composite structure was analyzed, and the corresponding suppression of spurious mode was proposed. The COM simulation parameters corresponding to the effective acoustic-wave mode were extracted, and the optimized parameters of the one–port SAW resonator with a high-quality factor were determined.

Research has shown that SAW (surface acoustic wave) devices with an LGS/Pt (langasite La3Ga5SiO14/platinum) structure are useful in high-temperature sensor applications. Extreme high temperature brings great acoustic attenuation because of the thermal radiation loss, which requires that the sensing device offer a sufficiently high quality factor (Q) and a low loss. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the performance of the quality factor as much as possible so as to better meet the application of high-temperature sensors. Based on these reasons, the main work of this paper was to extract accurate simulation parameters to optimize the Pt/LGS device and obtain Q-value device parameters. Optimization of SAW devices with LGS/Pt structure for sensing extreme high temperature was addressed by employing a typical coupling of modes (COM) model in this work. Using the short pulse method, the reflection coefficient of Pt electrodes on LGS substrate was extracted accurately by characterizing the prepared SAW device with strategic design. Other relevant parameters for COM simulation were determined by finite element analysis. To determine the optimal design parameters, the COM simulation was conducted on the SAW sensing device with a one-port resonator pattern for sensing extreme temperature, which allows for a larger Q-value and low insertion loss. Experimental results validate the theoretical simulation. In addition, the corresponding high-temperature characteristics of the prepared sensing device were investigated.

A Pd-Ni alloy thin-film coated surface acoustic wave (SAW) device is proposed for sensing hydrogen. The Pd-Ni thin-film was sputtered onto the SAW propagation path of a SAW device with a delay line pattern to build the chip-sized hydrogen sensor. The prepared sensor chip was characterized by employing a differential oscillation loop. The effect of the Pd-Ni film thickness on sensing performance was also evaluated, and optimal parameters were determined, allowing for fast response and high sensitivity. Excellent working stability (detection error of 3.7% in half a year), high sensitivity (21.3 kHz/%), and fast response (less than 10 s) were achieved from the 40 nm Pd-Ni alloy thin-film coated sensing device.

A high-overtone bulk acoustic resonator (HBAR) consisting of a piezoelectric film with two electrodes on a substrate exhibits a high quality factor (Q) and multi-mode resonance spectrum. By analyzing the influences of each layer’s material and structure (thickness) parameters on the effective electromechanical coupling coefficient (Keff2), the resonance spectrum characteristics of Keff2 have been investigated systematically, and the optimal design of HBAR has been provided. Besides, a device, corresponding to one of the theoretical cases studied, is fabricated and evaluated. The experimental results are basically consistent with the theoretical results. Finally, the effects of Keff2 on the function of the crystal oscillators constructed with HBARs are proposed. The crystal oscillators can operate in more modes and have a larger frequency hopping bandwidth by using the HBARs with a larger Keff2·Q.
