1. A Novel Approach for Rapid Dewatering of Water-Based Ink Wastewater Sludge under Low Temperature and Its Mechanism

Abstract

Enhanced dewatering remains a major challenge in sludge disposal. In this paper, a thermal solidification treatment under low temperatures was first and successfully employed to improve the dewaterability of sludge from water-based ink wastewater. A total of 95.1% of dewatering ratio, 36.6% of moisture content, and 91.9% of sludge volume reduction could be acquired at 75 °C and 30 min setting time by the reported approach. The DSC results indicated that a large amount of bound water trapped in sludge could be released into the bulk solution to become free water after thermal solidification treatment. The bound water content of sludge can be reduced from 3.40 to 0.20 g g−1 dry solid. The reported thermal solidification treatment is a thermophysical process that does not involve the solubilization of solid substrates and does not cause an increase in the COD value of dehydrated water. The obtained sludge after cooling was a clot of compacted cake with a uniform coralline-like structure. The softening and shrinking of acrylic resin within the sludge during heating contributed to the formation of compacted cake and thus enhanced the dewaterability. This study offers an economical and efficient treatment of sludge for the water-based ink printing industry.

Abstract

The Internet economy is flourishing, and the form of consumption has shifted from offline brick-and-mortar shopping to online consumption. At the same time, COVID-19 led to many offline stores being constrained in many ways, accelerating the conversion of shopping. The purpose of the study is to enable users to effectively use mobile products and optimize their service experience during furniture consumption. This study compares the relevant theories and the current state of research. Through qualitative and quantitative methods, user needs are investigated and data analysis is conducted to summarize interface improvement suggestions. The high-fidelity prototype design was conducted, and the interactive prototype was delivered to users for testing to verify the effect and feasibility of interface optimization and to propose improvement suggestions for the mobile terminal of furnishings.

3. Distribution Characteristics of Petroleum in Water Quality of Hangzhou Bay

Abstract

Based on the water quality monitoring data of 12 voyages in Hangzhou Bay from 2017 to 2019, the distribution characteristics of petroleum in the water quality survey project were analyzed. It was found that the content range of petroleum in the waters of Hangzhou Bay were 0.008~0.042 mg/L, 0.011~0.046 mg/L, 0.007~0.094 mg/L respectively, from 2017 to 2019, and the annual average content were 0.023 mg/L, 0.023 mg/L and 0.016 mg/L, all met the Class I sea water quality standard. In terms of seasonal change, the petroleum indicators in water quality were not obvious due to the influence of physical factors such as tidal current, sediment content and wind force, and they all belonged to fluctuations at low contents. In terms of interannual changes, the petroleum pollutants content were generally the same in 2017 and 2018, compared with the first two years, there was a significant decrease in 2019, with a certain downward trend. In terms of plane distribution, it mainly presented multipoint source distribution, and high value areas mainly appeared in coastal waters of Jiaxing and the south coast of Hangzhou Bay. Through correlation analysis and research, it was found that the content of petroleum was significantly negatively correlated with the suspended solids. The suspended solids in seawater had adsorption effect on petroleum pollutants, Thus the greater the mass of suspended solids in seawater, the lower the content of petroleum.

4. Analysis of Factors Influencing Outcomes in Preterm Infants With Necrotizing Enterocolitis

Abstract

BackgroundTo explore the surgical outcomes between patients with perforated and non-perforated neonatal necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) and identify indications for surgical intervention.MethodsThe surgical outcomes of 271 children with NEC admitted to the Seventh Medical Center of Chinese PLA General Hospital between August 2009 and August 2020 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients were divided into the non-perforated and perforated groups. The preoperative factors, including gestational age, birth weight, intrauterine infection, cholestasis, platelet change, white blood cell count, and C-reactive protein level were compared between the two groups, along with postoperative factors including infection status, complications, enteral and parenteral nutrition time, ICU time, ventilator use time, and intestinal necrosis length. Bell staging was performed for the two groups and the mortality of different Bell stages was explored. The risk of death and predisposing factors of patients with NEC were analyzed.ResultsIn total, 271 children undergoing surgery were included in this study. A total of 188 children were observed without perforation, including 57 deaths (30.3%), and 83 children with perforation, including 24 deaths (28.9%). Preoperative cholestasis and time from NEC diagnosis to surgery were significantly different between the two groups (P < 0.05). Postoperative factors, including parenteral nutrition time (32 [3–94] days vs. 23 [1–53] days), enteral nutrition time (27 [0–86] days vs. 18 [0–81] days), NICU time (44 [5–125] days vs. 29 [1–92] days), and length of intestinal necrosis (15 [0–92] cm vs. 10 [2–70] cm), were significant. The mortality rate of patients with Bell stage IIIA was higher than that of patients with Bell stage IIIB. A total of 81 patients had 30-day postoperative mortality (57 non-perforated cases). Multivariate Cox regression analysis showed that non-perforation was a poor prognostic factor for survival outcome (hazard ratio 2.288, 95% confidence interval [1.329-3.940], P = 0.003).ConclusionsPreterm infants in the non-perforated group had more serious complications and had a longer recovery time after surgery. Bell staging is not accurate in diagnosing severe NEC that needs surgical intervention.

Abstract

Summary Vertical hydraulic fracturing is widely used to develop low-permeability gas reservoirs. Uneven distribution of formation permeability and stress leads to multiple-wing hydraulic fractures with different lengths, which results in the wellbore not being the center of the circular stimulated reservoir volume (SRV) region. Therefore, to simulate the wellbore pressure of this phenomenon, a semianalytical model of the off-center multiwing fractured well in radial composite gas reservoirs is presented and the corresponding solution method is shown. The model is verified with the numerical solution, and eight flow regimes can be distinguished under the ideal case, which includes bilinear flow, fracture interference, linear flow, radial flow of inner region, transition flow of inner region, and radial flow of inner region. Compared with the previous model in which the well is at the center of radial composite gas reservoirs, in this paper we present an obvious “step” after the inner region radial flow regime, which is related to the off-center distance and radius of the inner region. In addition, the effects of some important parameters (such as off-center distance, permeability mobility, inner region radius, and fracture distribution) on typical curves are discussed. Finally, field well testing data are used to verify the accuracy of the model.

Abstract

The inferior mechanical properties and the difficulty in repairing damaged substrates and lubricant films of slippery liquid-infused porous surfaces significantly hampered their practical applications. To solve this problem, we fabricated a polysiloxane-polyurea slippery elastomer with lubricant self-replenishing and matrix self-healing properties by encapsulating silicone oil into the thermoplastic elastomers. By optimizing the chemical compositions and molecular interactions, the obtained slippery elastomer exhibits unique mechanical properties with a maximum breaking strength of 0.12 MPa, elongation of 1600%, and self-healing efficiency of 98%. Moreover, the lubricant stored in the capsule of the slippery elastomer can be controlled released under mechanical stimulation, further realizing surfaces' self-lubricating and liquid manipulation switching between slippery and pinning states. Furthermore, the textile-reinforced slippery elastomer with superior mechanical strength also exhibited liquid repellency, anti-biofouling, and drag reduction properties. Therefore, this textile-reinforced omniphobic surface with high mechanical property, matrix self-healing, and lubricant self-replenishing property shows a broad application prospect in surface protection, underwater antifouling, and drag reduction.

Abstract

The development of robust, stain-resistant, and self-healing liquid-repellent surfaces is a common aspiration of both consumer and industrial applications, but the existing methods suffer from limitations, such as complicated procedures, weak mechanical durability and substrate dependency. In this work, a lubricant-grafted slippery surface (LGSS) was prepared by grafting vinyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (Vi-PDMS) onto various substrates coated with sulfhydryl-modified hollow mesoporous silica (SH-HMS) through a thiol-ene click reaction. The uniform and intact lubricant layer can effectively decrease the absorption of the polysaccharide and protein, exhibiting superior antifouling properties. Notably, the hollow structure of SH-HMS could significantly increase the oil grafting capacity of the slippery surface from 0.013 g/cm2 to 0.027 g/cm2 compared with the surface constructed by solid silica. By virtue of the strong covalent bond forces between the lubricant oil and surfaces, the obtained LGSS exhibited robust liquid repellency when subjected to high/low temperature, ultraviolet irradiation and water impact. Moreover, the liquid-repellent LGSS exhibited good self-repairing performance owing to the directional migration of the Vi-PDMS chain segment from the hollow capsule to the surface through the mesoporous channels under heating treatment. Therefore, such a newly developed strategy for constructing liquid-repellent coatings on various substrates with self-repairing properties has the potential to promote the advancement of interfacial antifouling materials and exhibit tremendous potential for consumer and industrial applications.

Abstract

Here, a robust omniphobic slippery surface with excellent transparency was fabricated on ultrasmooth glass by thiol-ene click chemistry without pretextured rough structure. The original glass after alkaline hydrothermal treatment could form massive hydroxyl group, which acted as the reactive sites could occur dehydration condensation reaction with the 3-mercaptopropyltrimethoxysilane. Then, the vinyl-terminated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) covalently grafted onto the mercapto-modified glass via the facile and efficient thiol-ene click chemistry. The prepared surface exhibited superior transparency, omniphobicity and anti-fouling property. Moreover, the tethered PDMS monolayer displayed durable liquid-repellent property after long-term storage in high/low temperature, UV irradiation, water impaction and mechanical abrasion tests. Thus, such covalent grafting strategy for constructing omniphobic and transparent coatings without the assistant of the textured rough structure could promote the advancement of interfacial antiwetting materials. A highly transparent omniphobic coating was prepared by covalently grafting of vinyl-terminated PDMS onto the mercapto-modified surface via a thiol-ene click reaction. This PDMS-silicone oil-grafted surface exhibited high transparency and performed good antifouling property and liquid repellency even to the ethanol. Furthermore, the covalent grafting strategy endows the lubricating layer with excellent stability and mechanical durability to various external destructions.

Abstract

To determine which method of Positive End-expiratory Pressure (PEEP) titration is more useful, and to establish an evidence base for the clinical impact of Electrical Impedance Tomography (EIT) based individual PEEP setting which appears to be a promising method to optimize PEEP in Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS) patients.A systematic review and meta-analysis.4 databases (PUBMED, EMBASE, Web Of Science, and the Cochrane Library) from 1980 to December 2020 were performed.Randomized clinical trials patients with ARDS.PaOThe quality of the studies was assessed with the Cochrane risk and bias tool.8 trials, including a total of 222 participants, were eligible for analysis. Meta-analysis demonstrates a significantly EIT-based individual PEEP setting for patients receiving higher PaOThe benefits of PEEP titration with EIT on clinical outcomes of ARDS in placebo-controlled trials probably result from the visible regional ventilation of EIT. These findings offer clinicians and stakeholders a comprehensive assessment and high-quality evidence for the safety and efficacy of the EIT-based individual PEEP setting as a superior option for patients who undergo ARDS.

17. Facile fabrication of biomimetic slippery lubricant-infused transparent and multifunctional omniphobic surfaces

Abstract

Omniphobic coatings which can efficiently diminish the interfacial reactions between the underlying substrates and foreign liquids present broad technological impacts and enormous potential applications, whereas the current prepared superamphiphobic surfaces are constrained to their weak robustness owing to the vulnerability of the sophisticated hierarchical structures. Herein, we employed oxidative polymerization method to graft polyaniline (PANI) nanofibers on arbitrarily shaped surfaces that further modified with perfluoroalkylthiol and infiltrated with perfluoropolyether lubricant, constructing a slippery lubricant-infused porous surfaces (SLIPS). With the enlargement of the polymerization time, the coverage degree of PANI coating on the glass surface gradually increased and their transmittance reduced simultaneously. Meanwhile, the influences of the structure geometry and surface chemistry on the slippery behavior of foreign liquids on the SLIPS were investigated, further verifying that the synergetic effect of the adequate texture roughness and matched surface chemistry is the prerequisite for preparing steady and defect-free lubricant layer. Moreover, the prepared SLIPS could be applied in various promising applications such as anti-fogging, anti-fingerprint, three-dimensional droplet manipulation and crude-oil lossless transportation. More importantly, the lubricant layer remained stable on the surfaces after long-term storage in high/low temperature, water immersion and ultraviolet irradiation, and displayed superior mechanical resistance to water impact, sandpaper abrasions and knife scratches. Therefore, this strategy for fabricating nepenthes-inspired lubricant-infused surfaces is expected to further promote the cognition and manufacture of multifunctional omniphobic materials.

Abstract

Measuring optic nerve sheath diameter (ONSD), an indicator to predict intracranial hypertension, is noninvasive and convenient, but the reliability of ONSD needs to be improved. Instead of using ONSD alone, this study aimed to evaluate the reliability of the ratio of ONSD to eyeball transverse diameter (ONSD/ETD) in predicting intracranial hypertension in traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. We performed a prospective study on patients admitted to the Surgery Intensive Care Unit. The included 52 adults underwent craniotomy for TBI between March 2017 and September 2018. The ONSD and ETD of each eyeball were measured by ultrasound and computed tomography (CT) scan within 24 h after a fiber optic probe was placed into lateral ventricle. Intracranial pressure (ICP) > 20 mmHg was regarded as intracranial hypertension. The correlations between invasive ICP and ultrasound-ONSD/ETD ratio, ultrasound-ONSD, CT-ONSD/ETD ratio, and CT-ONSD were each analyzed separately. Ultrasound measurement was successfully performed in 94% (n = 49) of cases, and ultrasound and CT measurement were performed in 48% (n = 25) of cases. The correlation efficiencies between ultrasound-ONSD/ETD ratio, ultrasound-ONSD, CT-ONSD/ETD ratio, and ICP were 0.613, 0.498, and 0.688, respectively (P

Here we found that DNA damage, a common denominator and major cause of aging, promoted susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2 infection in cells and intestinal organoids. SARS-CoV-2 entry was facilitated by DNA damage caused by either telomere attrition or extrinsic genotoxic stress and hampered by inhibition of DNA damage response. Mechanistic analysis revealed that the DNA damage response increased expression of ACE2, the receptor of SARS-CoV-2, by activation of transcription factor c-Jun in vitro and in vivo. Knockdown of c-Jun significantly reduced cell susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2. To explore the clinical clues of contribution of DNA damage in SARS-CoV-2 infection, we analyzed the expression of ACE2, γH2Ax and p-c-Jun in old and young human and mouse tissues. Expression of ACE2 was elevated in older human and mouse tissues and positively correlated with γH2Ax and p-c-Jun. Finally, targeting DNA damage by increasing the DNA repair capacity, alleviated cell susceptibility to SARS-CoV-2. Our data provide insight into the age-associated differences in SARS-CoV-2 infection and a novel target for anti-viral intervention.

Abstract

Summary Background Congenital anomalies are the fifth leading cause of mortality in children younger than 5 years globally. Many gastrointestinal congenital anomalies are fatal without timely access to neonatal surgical care, but few studies have been done on these conditions in low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs). We compared outcomes of the seven most common gastrointestinal congenital anomalies in low-income, middle-income, and high-income countries globally, and identified factors associated with mortality. Methods We did a multicentre, international prospective cohort study of patients younger than 16 years, presenting to hospital for the first time with oesophageal atresia, congenital diaphragmatic hernia, intestinal atresia, gastroschisis, exomphalos, anorectal malformation, and Hirschsprung's disease. Recruitment was of consecutive patients for a minimum of 1 month between October, 2018, and April, 2019. We collected data on patient demographics, clinical status, interventions, and outcomes using the REDCap platform. Patients were followed up for 30 days after primary intervention, or 30 days after admission if they did not receive an intervention. The primary outcome was all-cause, in-hospital mortality for all conditions combined and each condition individually, stratified by country income status. We did a complete case analysis. Findings We included 3849 patients with 3975 study conditions (560 with oesophageal atresia, 448 with congenital diaphragmatic hernia, 681 with intestinal atresia, 453 with gastroschisis, 325 with exomphalos, 991 with anorectal malformation, and 517 with Hirschsprung's disease) from 264 hospitals (89 in high-income countries, 166 in middle-income countries, and nine in low-income countries) in 74 countries. Of the 3849 patients, 2231 (58·0%) were male. Median gestational age at birth was 38 weeks (IQR 36–39) and median bodyweight at presentation was 2·8 kg (2·3–3·3). Abstract

Water-droplet adhesions of the coatings constructed by all-polymer multiscale hierarchical particles (MHPs) were finely adjusted within the range from highly adhesive to self-cleanable. The MHPs were synthesized via thermal-induced polymerization of the reactants absorbed into self-made hollow reactors and in situ capping of nanocomplexes onto the reactors' shell simultaneously. The dynamic wettability of the prepared MHPs was tuned between water-droplet sliding and water-droplet adhering by simply controlling the type of capped nanocomplexes. Water-adhesive force changed in the range from 31.28 to 89.34 μN. In addition, the raspberry-like particles (MHPs without nanocomplex capping) were used to construct superhydrophobic rose-petal-like surface with a high water-adhesive force, which can be applied in microdroplet transportation without loss. The MHPs with appropriate nanocomplex capping were used to fabricate superhydrophobic lotus-leaf-like fabric, exhibiting excellent antifouling property and superior mechanical stability. We believe that the prepared superhydrophobic MHPs with diverse water-adhesive forces are promising in potential academic research and industrial applications.

Abstract

Zn modified ZSM-5 zeolite supported Ni bifunctional catalysts were prepared by in-situ hydrothermal synthesis (Zn-Ni-ZSM-5), co-impregnation method (Zn-Ni/ZSM-5) as well as combining in-situ hydrothermal synthesis of Zn-ZSM-5 and sequential impregnation of Ni (Ni/Zn-ZSM-5) and used for the selective converting olefin to aromatics applicable for FCC gasoline hydro-upgrading. The Lewis (L) acid sites generated by ZnOH+ species and hydrogenation active sites from Ni0 species were varied with preparation method, in which their locations at the external surface or micropores of zeolite changed the acid properties of catalysts. Comparing to the Zn-Ni/ZSM-5 from the co-impregnation method, direct in-situ hydrothermal method could incorporate Zn and Ni species within zeolite, which makes the strong interaction between the metal species and the framework Al to form medium-strong L acids (ZnOH+/NiOH+). This leads to the decrease of ratio of Bronsted acid sites to L acid sites (B/L) from 0.40 to 0.12 and the difficulty in reducing of Ni cations to Ni0 from 57% to 30% Ni0 percent. Ni/Zn-ZSM-5 sample prepared by incorporating Zn species into micropores and sequential depositing Ni species at the external surface of zeolite possesses a low B/L ratio similar to Zn-Ni-ZSM-5 (0.20 versus 0.12) but a much higher Ni0 percent (52% versus 30%). Zn-Ni-ZSM-5 shows closer intimacy between Zn and Ni species comparing to Zn-Ni/ZSM-5 and Ni/Zn-ZSM-5. For the 1-hexene aromatization, the formed iso-alkene at acid sites was quickly saturated to iso-alkanes by the adjacent Ni0 particles over Ni-Zn-ZSM-5 catalyst in hydrogen steam. However, the location of aromatization active sites (ZnOH+, L acid sites) in micropores and hydrogenation active sites (Ni0 species) on external surface of Ni/Zn-ZSM-5 makes the tandem conversion of n-alkene → iso-alkene → aromatics, rather than the n-alkene → iso-alkene → iso-alkane. Thus, Zn-Ni-ZSM-5 with close intimacy of ZnOH+ and Ni0 particles shows a high iso-alkane selectivity (27.9% iC4+), while Ni/Zn-ZSM-5 exhibits a high aromatics selectivity (39.6 %) in the conversion of 1-hexene in hydrogen steam. Similar results have also found in the conversion of n-heptane. Here, the control of the intimacy of Zn and Ni in ZSM-5 zeolites has been realized to be a good protocol to adjust the selective conversion of olefins/alkanes to aromatics versus iso-alkanes.

Abstract

To evaluate whether plasma white blood cell count (WBC), platelet count (PLT), and C-reactive protein level (CRP) can be used to differentiate surgical necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) from medical NEC. Preterm infants admitted between January 1, 2011 and July 31, 2015 were stratified by the need of surgery as surgical NEC (n = 41) and medical NEC (n = 43). The values of WBC, PLT and CRP were collected at time before NEC occurred (T0), at onset of NEC (T1) and when surgical assessment was required (T2). Patients admitted between August 1, 2015 and March 1, 2018 (n = 53) were collected for further verification. Variables identified in logistic regression analysis predicting surgical NEC were WBC and PLT at T2 (WBC2 and PLT2). The predictive probability of surgery (P) could be calculated by the equation $$\ln (P/(1 - P))=2.801 - 0.207{\text{WB}}{{\text{C}}_{\text{2}}} - 0.008{\text{PL}}{{\text{T}}_{\text{2}}}$$ . The area under curve of P was 0.84 and the ideal cutoff value was 0.55, with sensitivity and specificity of 85 and 81%, respectively. This cutoff value got an sensitivity of 80% and specificity of 79% in the verification group. Combination of WBC and PLT can effectively differentiate surgical NEC from medical NEC infants when surgical assessment was required.

Abstract

Recently, slippery liquid-infused surfaces (SLIPSs) have been demonstrated for widespread applications due to their excellent omniphobic properties. However, the complex construction process and the instability of the lubricant layer of SLIPSs constrain its practical applications. Herein, self-adhesive organic–inorganic hybrid microspheres (Poly@V-SiO2) with controlled particle sizes and adjusted chemical constituents were prepared via the sol–gel method and radical polymerization processes. The obtained Poly@V-SiO2 microspheres showed superhydrophobicity without post-modification. Moreover, the Poly@V-SiO2 with epoxy groups could self-assembled on the hydroxylated substrates via the epoxy-hydroxyl ring-opening reaction. Furthermore, the lubricant-grafted slippery surface (LGSS) was obtained by the reaction of the remaining epoxy groups of Poly@V-SiO2 and the amino terminated polydimethylsiloxane. The LGSS exhibited outstanding liquid repellency to water and organic solvents and demonstrated excellent anti-biofouling properties. Besides, the LGSS performed sailing velocity boost by nearly 1.8 times in both water and blended oil with drag reduction rates of almost 80%. More importantly, the covalently-grafted lubricant oil demonstrated excellent long-term stability under extreme operating conditions such as high/low temperature, ultraviolet irradiation, high-speed shear, and water impact. Therefore, the robust anti-fouling LGSS can be considered a promising material in daily life and industrial applications.

Abstract

The aim of this study was to identify image-based morphological parameters that correlated with the formation of internal carotid artery-posterior communicating artery (ICA-PcomA) aneurysms. Morphological parameters obtained from 3-dimensional digital subtraction angiography (3D-DSA) were evaluated from nine patients with ICA-PcomA aneurysms, including the diameter of the ICA (Dica) and PcomA (Dpcom), the angle between the ICA and the origin of the PcomA (Apcom), and the angle between the ophthalmic and communicating segments of the ICA (Aica). Measurements were performed on both sides of each patient. Parameters were analyzed with a paired-samples t-test for significance. In additional, receiver operating characteristic (ROC) analysis was performed on the significant parameter. Statistically significant differences were found between the aneurysmal (45.28±29.07°) and control sides (79.22±17.83°) for Apcom (p=0.020). In the ROC analysis, the area under the curve value of Apcom was 0.852, and the threshold for optimal sensitivity and specificity was 52.25°. Therefore, the Apcom parameter was correlated with the formation of an ICA-PcomA aneurysm, and seems to be a promising morphological parameter for risk assessment of aneurysm formation.

Abstract

Spark plasma sintering (SPS) is a newly developed technique that enables poorly sinterable aluminum nitride (AlN) powder to be fully densified. It is addressed that pure AlN sintered by SPS has relatively low thermal conductivity. In this work, SPS of AlN ceramic was carried out with Y2O3, Sm2O3 and Li2O as sintering aids. Effects of additives on AlN densification, microstructure and properties were investigated. Addition of sintering aids accelerated the densification, lowered AlN sintering temperature and was advantageous to improve properties of AlN ceramic. Thermal conductivity and strength were found to be greatly improved with the present of Sm2O3 as sintering additive, with a thermal conductivity value about 131 Wm−1K−1 and bending strength about 330 MPa for the 2 wt% Sm2O3-doped AlN sample SPS at 1,780 °C for 5 min. XRD measurement revealed that additives had no obvious effect on the AlN lattice parameters. Observation by SEM showed that AlN ceramics prepared by SPS method manifested quite homogeneous microstructure. However, AlN grain sizes and shapes, location of secondary phases varied with the additives. The thermal conductivity of AlN ceramics was mainly affected by the additives through their effects on the growth of AlN grain and the location of liquid phases.
