With the expansion of the real estate sector and the rise of tourist resorts, many individuals now own multiple properties, resulting in a substantial number of homes remaining vacant for extended periods or being used seasonally. Despite being unheated, rooms in these vacant properties continue to transfer heat to adjacent heated rooms. While previous research has explored the heat transfer between non-heated and heated rooms based on their relative positioning, few studies have considered the dynamic aspects of this process. To fill this gap, we developed a scaled-down model to replicate real-world conditions and conducted experiments to track the dynamic temperature changes between non-heated and heated rooms in different configurations. The heat transfer mechanism was analyzed, and a theoretical model was constructed to quantify the dynamic heat exchange. This model accounts for variations in both convective and radiative heat transfer between rooms. Initial findings suggest that heat transfer to a non-heated room below a heated space can reach 28 % of the total heat supplied, while heat transfer to an upper adjacent room can account for 16 %. The peak heat transfer is observed after 5–10 h of heating. These results provide valuable insights for optimizing space heating, promoting energy-saving practices, and improving indoor heating efficiency, alongside offering actionable recommendations for behavioral energy conservation.

With the continuous development of urbanization in our country, the contradiction between the protection of traditional village heritage architecture and the development of modern urban lifestyle is becoming increasingly prominent. With the introduction of China's rural revitalization strategy, improving the rural living environment, promoting sustainable development, utilizing renewable energy for power supply, and achieving low-carbon architecture have become particularly important. This article investigates the relationship between solar energy system and site layout in illustrative historic buildings, and uses thermal-economic methods for feasibility analysis of such old building retrofitting program toward nearly zero energy construction. The preliminary results indicate that integrating solar panel roof with old building body for renewable energy exploitation can achieve good economic benefits while reducing carbon dioxide emissions. This work provides reference insights into the sustainable transformation of traditional rural heritage conservation buildings in our country and proposes feasible solutions to reconcile the contradiction between the preservation of traditional architectural heritage and sustainable modernization demands.

PurposeIn the realm of pain management, traditional Chinese medicine, specifically acupuncture, has garnered increasing attention. This meta-analysis pioneers the evaluation of acupuncture’s effectiveness in treating insomnia among hypertensive patients.MethodsWe conducted a comprehensive search across several databases—PubMed, Web of Science, Cochrane Library, WANFANG, China National Knowledge Infrastructure (CNKI), Sinomed, and the Chinese Journal of Science and Technology (VIP). Additionally, forward and backward articles of studies published from the inception of these databases until 10 September 2023, were reviewed. This systematic review and meta-analysis included all randomized controlled trials (RCTs) focusing on acupuncture for insomnia in hypertensive patients, without imposing language or date restrictions. We rigorously assessed all outcome measures reported in these trials. The evidence was synthesized by calculating the difference between mean differences (MD) in symptom change. The quality of the evidence was determined using the Cochrane Risk of Bias tool. This study is registered with PROSPERO under number CRD42023461760.ResultsOur analysis included 16 RCTs, comprising 1,309 patients. Heating ventilation and air conditioning system accounts for over one third of building energy usage, especially for public buildings due to large indoor heat source and high ventilation and thermal comfort requirement compared to residential buildings. Natural ventilation shows high application potentials in public buildings because of its high-efficient ventilation effect and energy saving potential for indoor heat dissipation. In this paper, the building design is conducted for a science museum and library with atrium-centered natural ventilation consideration. The floor layout, building orientation and internal structure are optimized to make full use of natural ventilation for space cooling under local climatic conditions. A natural ventilation model is established through building field tests to evaluate the air flow and thermal environment under indoor and outdoor pressure differences. The preliminary results show that Building A's courtyard exhibited overheating issues, likely attributed to outdoor solar radiation, whereas Building B's courtyard experienced localized cooling, possibly due to indoor air conditioning system controls. Addressing these concerns necessitates modifications in courtyard design and structure. Moreover, both courtyards displayed vertical temperature gradients, emphasizing the need for effective management of outdoor heat influx and enhancements in indoor ventilation and shading strategies. To mitigate these issues, the study proposed three distinct roof design models and more refined indoor air conditioning system control strategies. The optimization of architectural design can achieve a maximum energy-saving rate of 46.54 %. Furthermore, aligning functional zones with thermal comfort areas was recommended to enhance overall building thermal comfort. The findings and proposed solutions from this study are anticipated to contribute to the enhancement of thermal comfort, energy efficiency, and vertical temperature distribution in large public buildings, catering to user requirements while reducing energy consumption. This research holds significant implications for advancing sustainability and environmental preservation in the realm of architecture.

This study aimed to address the issue of the low solubility in the model drug probenecid (PRO) and its impact on bioavailability. Two salts of probenecid (PRO), 4-aminopyridine (4AMP), and 4-dimethylaminopyridine (4DAP) were synthesized and characterized by PXRD, DSC, TGA, FTIR, and SEM. The crystal structures of the two salts were determined by SCXRD, demonstrating that the two salts exhibited different hydrogen bond networks, stacking modes, and molecular conformations of PRO. The solubility of PRO and its salts in a phosphate-buffered solution (pH = 6.8) at 37 °C was determined, the results showed that the solubility of PRO salts increased to 142.83 and 7.75 times of the raw drug, respectively. Accelerated stability experiments (40 °C, 75% RH) showed that the salts had good phase stability over 8 weeks. Subsequently, Hirshfeld surface (HS), atom in molecules (AIM), and independent gradient model (IGM) were employed for the assessment of intermolecular interactions. The analyses of salt-forming sites and principles were conducted using molecular electrostatic potential surfaces (MEPs) and pKa rules. The lattice energy (EL) and hydration-free energy (EHF) of PRO and its salts were calculated, and the relationships between these parameters and melting points and the solubility changes were analyzed.

The effectiveness of silicon (Si) and silicon-based materials in catalyzing photoelectrochemistry (PEC) CO2 reduction is limited by poor visible light absorption. In this study, we prepared two-dimensional (2D) silicon-based photonic crystals (SiPCs) with circular dielectric pillars arranged in a square array to amplify the absorption of light within the wavelength of approximately 450 nm. By investigating five sets of n + p SiPCs with varying dielectric pillar sizes and periodicity while maintaining consistent filling ratios, our findings showed improved photocurrent densities and a notable shift in product selectivity towards CH4 (around 25% Faradaic Efficiency). Additionally, we integrated platinum nanoparticles, which further enhanced the photocurrent without impacting the enhanced light absorption effect of SiPCs. These results not only validate the crucial role of SiPCs in enhancing light absorption and improving PEC performance but also suggest a promising approach towards efficient and selective PEC CO2 reduction.

Photoelectrochemical cells (PECs) are an important technology for converting solar energy, which has experienced rapid development in recent decades. Transparent conductive oxides (TCOs) are also gaining increasing attention due to their crucial role in PEC reactions. This review comprehensively delves into the significance of TCO materials in PEC devices. Starting from an in-depth analysis of various TCO materials, this review discusses the properties, fabrication techniques, and challenges associated with these TCO materials. Next, we highlight several cost-effective, simple, and environmentally friendly methods, such as element doping, plasma treatment, hot isostatic pressing, and carbon nanotube modification, to enhance the transparency and conductivity of TCO materials. Despite significant progress in the development of TCO materials for PEC applications, we at last point out that the future research should focus on enhancing transparency and conductivity, formulating advanced theories to understand structure–property relationships, and integrating multiple modification strategies to further improve the performance of TCO materials in PEC devices.

In this study, the standard tent used by the China International Medical Team (Sichuan) was used as the research object to study the internal temperature change in medical tents in a low-temperature environment relying on heating equipment. Method: Four temperature sensors were arranged along the horizontal direction at a 1.2 m height in the medical tent, and more sensors were installed at heights of 0.1, 0.2, 0.6, 1.2, 1.8, 2.4, and 2.5 m. A total of 11 temperature sensors were set. Temperature tests were conducted in January and February 2021 in Chengdu, Sichuan Province. During the test, the running time of the heating equipment was controlled in real time according to the temperature change trend. A Kolmogorov–Smirnov(K-S) test was used to verify the reliability of the experimental data. The temperature change trend was used to characterize the influence of the heating and cooling equipment on the temperature change inside the tent. Results: Due to the position angle of the heating equipment and the influence of the external environment, the spatial distribution of the ambient temperature inside the medical tent was obviously uneven. In winter, an electric heater with a heating power of about 2500 W can increase the internal temperature of the tent to 16.7 °C, significantly improving the internal thermal environment of the medical tent. The ambient temperature in the medical tent is positively correlated with the height and the installation position of the heating equipment. Conclusion: Medical tents can maintain the ambient temperature well to meet medical needs with the support of heating equipment with sufficient power. The temperature distribution law of medical tents in this experiment has good guiding significance for the placement angle of heating equipment and the configuration position of medical equipment and provides a reference for the development of thermal insulation materials for medical tents.

The natural ventilation model is established through computational fluid dynamics (CFD) for airflow evaluation under indoor and outdoor pressure differences. The preliminary results show that such an atrium-centered architectural design could facilitate an average air exchange rate over 2 h−1 via the natural ventilation effect. Moreover, indoor thermal environment simulation results indicate that the exhaust air temperature can be about 5 °C higher than the indoor air mean temperature during the daytime, resulting in about 41.2% air conditioning energy saving ratio due to the free cooling effect of natural ventilation. This work can provide guidance and references for natural ventilation optimization design in public buildings.

The high power density and long cyclic stability of N-doped carbon make it an attractive material for supercapacitor electrodes. Nevertheless, its low energy density limits its practical application. To solve the above issues, Fe2O3 embedded in N-doped porous carbon (Fe2O3/N-PC) was designed by pyrolyzing Hemin/activated carbon (Hemin/AC) composites. A porous structure allows rapid diffusion of electrons and ions during charge–discharge due to its large surface area and conductive channels. The redox reactions of Fe2O3 particles and N heteroatoms contribute to pseudocapacitance, which greatly enhances the supercapacitive performance. Fe2O3/N-PC showed a superior capacitance of 290.3 F g−1 at 1 A g−1 with 93.1% capacity retention after 10,000 charge–discharge cycles. Eventually, a high energy density of 37.6 Wh kg−1 at a power density of 1.6 kW kg−1 could be delivered with a solid symmetric device.

Stroke-induced depression is a common complication and an important risk factor for disability. Besides psychiatric symptoms, depressed patients may also exhibit a variety of gastrointestinal symptoms, and even take gastrointestinal symptoms as the primary reason for medical treatment. It is well documented that stress may disrupt the balance of the gut microbiome in patients suffering from post-stroke depression (PSD), and that disruption of the gut microbiome is closely related to the severity of the condition in depressed patients. Therefore, maintaining the balance of intestinal microbiota can be the focus of research on the mechanism of acupuncture in the treatment of PSD. Furthermore, stroke can be effectively treated with acupuncture at all stages and it may act as a special microecological regulator by regulating intestinal microbiota as well. In this article, we reviewed the studies on changing intestinal microbiota after acupuncture treatment and examined the existing problems and development prospects of acupuncture, microbiome, and poststroke depression, in order to provide new ideas for future acupuncture research.

Natural convection in cavity plays a significant role in energy-related field, including the indoor heat transfer analysis in greenhouse with integrated PV roof. In this study, mathematical model is established for two-dimensional heat transfer analysis in greenhouse air cavity, with numerical simulation through computational fluid dynamics (CFD). Main natural convection impact factors, such as system configuration parameters (tilting angle and PV panel unit number) and fluid thermal–physical properties, are investigated with indoor temperature distribution and streamline comparison by finite-volume method (FVD). Preliminary results show that with rising Rayleigh number (Ra), natural convection is enhanced with growing Nusselt number (Nu). Moreover, panel slope tilting angle (θ) highly determines inside heat transfer subregions in terms of the vertical temperature gradient declines with rising θ, improving the temperature distribution uniformity inside. The solar greenhouse example illustrates that with the increasing numbers of panel group numbers (n), the air temperature gradient differences decrease, improving the temperature distribution uniformity inside, which is preferable to built environment accurate control for greenhouse in the practical engineering. This work can provide modeling method support and reference for natural heat convection applications.

Neural plasticity promotes the reorganization of language networks and is an essential recovery mechanism for poststroke aphasia (PSA). Neuroplasticity may be a pivotal bridge to elucidate the potential recovery mechanisms of acupuncture for aphasia. Therefore, understanding the neuroplasticity mechanism of acupuncture in PSA is crucial. However, the underlying therapeutic mechanism of neuroplasticity in PSA after acupuncture needs to be explored. Excitotoxicity after brain injury affects the activity of neurotransmitters and disrupts the transmission of normal neuron information. Thus, a helpful strategy of acupuncture might be to improve PSA by affecting the availability of these neurotransmitters and glutamate receptors at synapses. In addition, the regulation of neuroplasticity by acupuncture may also be related to the regulation of astrocytes. Considering the guiding significance of acupuncture for clinical treatment, it is necessary to carry out further study about the influence of acupuncture on the recovery of aphasia after stroke. This study summarizes the current research on the neural mechanism of acupuncture in treating PSA. It seeks to elucidate the potential effect of acupuncture on the recovery of PSA from the perspective of synaptic plasticity and integrity of gray and white matter.

ObjectiveTo evaluate the safety and effectiveness of Iodine-125 (125I) brachytherapy combined with pre-operative transarterial chemoembolization in patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer.MethodsIn this study, a total of thirty-seven individuals suffering from locally advanced head and neck cancer were involved. The patients were subjected to transarterial chemoembolization as well as implantation of 125I seeds under the guidance of CT and ultrasonography. Follow-up was conducted for 36 months to study the following parameters: the local control rate, survival rate, and clinical complications.ResultsIn total, thirty-six patients at the end of three months showed an objective response rate of 69.8% and disease control rate of 93.0%, respectively. The 1, 2, and 3-year cumulative overall survival rate was 89.2%, 73.0%, and 45.9%, respectively. The adverse events of the treatment included infection (n=1, Grade III), radiation brachial plexus injury (n=1, Grade III), leukopenia (n=1, Grade III), cerebrovascular embolism (n=1, Grade IV).ConclusionThe combination of 125I brachytherapy and pre-operative transarterial chemoembolization was safe and effective in patients with locally advanced head and neck cancer.

Metal nanoparticles have been extensively used as co-catalysts in photocatalytic systems in order to pursue improvements in both reaction kinetics and selectivity. In this work, PdAg dual-metallic nanoparticles synthesized by the co-reduction method were decorated on a well-established α-Fe2O3/CdS Z-scheme photoactive material as a co-catalyst to study their performance for promoting the photoreduction of CO2. Herein, α-Fe2O3 and CdS were in situ synthesized on fluorine-doped tin oxide (FTO) glass by hydrothermal and SILAR (successive ionic layer adsorption and reaction) methods, respectively. The direct Z-scheme charge transfer path between Fe2O3 and CdS and the effective electron migration toward the PdAg mainly contributed to the excellent photocatalytic CO2 reduction performance. The controllable work function based on Pd (5.12) and Ag (4.26) constructed an appropriate band alignment with α-Fe2O3/CdS and displayed favorable production for CH4 rather than CO. The optimum ratio of PdAg 1:2 performed a 48% enhancement than pure Pd for photoreduction of CO2. Meanwhile, the enhanced charge separation improved the photoelectrochemical performance and photocurrent generation, and reduced the electrical resistance between components. This work provided insights into the dual-metallic co-catalyst for boosting the activity and selectivity of photocatalytic CO2 reduction.

Background: Tumours are among the most lethal diseases that heavily endanger human health globally. Xuefu Zhuyu Decoction (XFZYD) is a prescription used to treat blood-activating stasis. Although XFZYD has been shown to suppress migration and invasion of tumour cells, the active ingredients, potential targets, and underlying mechanism remain largely elusive.Purpose: To identify the prospective ingredients and major targets of XFZYD against tumours, and evaluate the efficacy and potential molecular mechanisms of XFZYD extract on tumour growth and invasion.Methods: We predicted that XFZYD might act on 80 targets through 128 active components using the network pharmacology analysis method. In addition, we prepared an XFZYD aqueous extract and employed the RasV12/lgl−/−-induced Drosophila tumour model to carry out experimental verification.Results: XFZYD did not exhibit any side effects on development, viability, and fertility. Furthermore, XFZYD significantly impeded tumour size and invasion at moderate concentrations and suppressed the increased phosphorylation of JNK but strongly enhanced the expression of Caspase 3 in the RasV12/lgl−/− model. Finally, the mRNA level of the transcription complex AP-1 component c-FOS was remarkably reduced. In contrast, the transcription of three pro-apoptotic genes was significantly increased when XFZYD was used to treat the tumour model.Conclusion: The study findings suggest that XFZYD may promote tumour cell apoptosis by activating caspase signalling to control primary growth and hinder tumour cell invasion by suppressing JNK/AP-1 signalling activity, thus providing a potential therapeutic strategy for XFZYD in the clinical treatment of cancer and other related diseases.

Photocatalytic benzyl alcohol (BA) oxidation to value-added chemicals by semiconductors has attracted massive attentions due to its industrial interest. In this work, Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalysts composed of FAPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) and WO3 with different morphologies are prepared. Benefiting from the strong redox potential and morphological engineering, the Z-scheme heterojunction photocatalyst exhibits an outstanding performance of BA oxidation to benzaldehyde (BD) with 99% selectively. Remarkably, after manipulating the size of FAPbBr3 NCs to quantum dots (QDs), benzoic acid (BZ) as the main product (90% selectivity) of BA oxidation can be generated on the Z-scheme photocatalyst. As revealed by in-situ electronic paramagnetic resonance (EPR), a new radical will be generated over the FAPbBr3 QDs/WO3 which alters the product of benzyl alcohol oxidation form BD to BZ.

Abstract Background At present, the treatment of recurrent glioblastoma is extremely challenging. In this study, we used a novel three-dimensional non-coplanar template (3DNPT) combined with open MR to guide 125I seed implantation for recurrent glioblastoma. The aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility, accuracy, and effectiveness of this technique. Methods Twenty-four patients of recurrent glioblastoma underwent 3DNPT with open MR-guided 125I brachytherapy from August 2017 to January 2019. Preoperative treatment plan and 3DNPT were made according to enhanced isovoxel T1-weighted MR images. 125I seeds were implanted using 3DNPT and 1.0-T open MR imaging guidance. Dosimetry verification was performed after brachytherapy based on postoperative CT/MR fusion images. Preoperative and postoperative dosimetry parameters of D90, V100, V200, conformity index (CI), external index (EI) were compared. The objective response rate (ORR) at 6 months and 1-year survival rate were calculated. Median overall survival (OS) measured from the date of brachytherapy was estimated by Kaplan-Meier method. Results There were no significant differences between preoperative and postoperative dosimetry parameters of D90, V100, V200, CI, EI (P > 0.05). The ORR at 6 months was 75.0%. The 1-year survival rate was 58.3%. Median OS was 12.9 months. One case of small amount of epidural hemorrhage occurred during the procedure. There were 3 cases of symptomatic brain edema after brachytherapy treatment, including grade three toxicity in 1 case and grade two toxicity in 2 cases. The three patients were treated with corticosteroid for 2 to 4 weeks. The clinical symptoms related to brain edema were significantly alleviated thereafter. Conclusions 3DNPT combined with open MR-guided 125I brachytherapy for circumscribed recurrent glioblastoma is feasible, effective, and with low risk of complications. Postoperative dosimetry matched the preoperative treatment plan. The described method can be used as a novel implantation technique for 125I brachytherapy in the treatment of recurrent gliomas. Trial registration The study was approved by the Institutional Review Board of Shandong Provincial Hospital Affiliated to Shandong University (NSFC:NO.2017–058), registered 1st July 2017.

Background. Aphasia is a common symptom in stroke patients, presenting with the impairment of spontaneous speech, repetition, naming, auditory comprehension, reading, and writing function. Multiple rehabilitation methods have been suggested for the recovery of poststroke aphasia, including medication treatment, behavioral therapy, and stimulation approach. Acupuncture has been proven to have a beneficial effect on improving speech functions in repetition, oral speech, reading, comprehension, and writing ability. Neuroimaging technology provides a visualized way to explore cerebral neural activity, which helps reveal the therapeutic effect of acupuncture therapy. In this systematic review, we aim to reveal and summarize the neuroimaging mechanism of acupuncture therapy on poststroke aphasia to provide the foundation for further study. Methods. Seven electronic databases were searched including PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials, China National Knowledge Infrastructure, the Wanfang databases, and the Chinese Scientific Journal Database. After screening the studies according to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, we summarized the neuroimaging mechanism of acupuncture on poststroke aphasia, as well as the utilization of acupuncture therapy and the methodological characteristics. Result. After searching, 885 articles were retrieved. After removing the literature studies, animal studies, and case reports, 16 studies were included in the final analysis. For the acupuncture type, 10 studies used manual acupuncture and 5 studies used electroacupuncture, while body acupuncture (10 studies), scalp acupuncture (7 studies), and tongue acupuncture (8 studies) were applied for poststroke aphasia patients. Based on blood oxygen level-dependent (BOLD) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) technologies, 4 neuroimaging analysis methods were used including amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation (ALFF), regional homogeneity (ReHo), seed-based analysis, and independent component analysis (ICA). Two studies reported the instant acupuncture effect, and 14 studies reported the constant acupuncture’s effect on poststroke aphasia patients. 5 studies analyzed the correlation between the neuroimaging outcomes and the clinical language scales. Conclusion. In this systematic review, we found that the mechanism of acupuncture’s effect might be associated with the activation and functional connectivity of language-related brain areas, such as brain areas around Broca’s area and Wernicke’s area in the left inferior temporal gyrus, supramarginal gyrus, middle frontal gyrus, and inferior frontal gyrus. However, these studies were still in the preliminary stage. Multicenter randomized controlled trials (RCT) with large sample sizes were needed to verify current evidence, as well as to explore deeply the neuroimaging mechanisms of acupuncture’s effects.

With the rapid development of photocatalysis field, photocatalysts have received increasing attention due to their important role in environmental pollution and energy crisis. As a nonmetallic polymeric material, graphite carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is rich in sources and its preparation is simple, and thus has been widely used as a visible-light-responsive photocatalyst. In this review, we have summarized the recent progress related to the design, modification, and construction of g-C3N4 based photocatalysts with excellent photocatalytic performances. First, we have described the basic structure and properties of g-C3N4. Thereafter, we have pointed out that the defects of pristine g-C3N4 and illustrated the general design principles for all of modified strategies. Subsequently, we have discussed various strategies to optimize the photocatalytic properties of g-C3N4 in detail, including constructing Z-scheme heterojunctions based on g-C3N4, morphological controlling, metal deposition, ion doping, dye sensitization, quantum dots modification, and acid treatment. Particularly, we have comprehensively explicated the critical factors governing the performance of the photocatalyst and the enhanced photocatalytic mechanisms of each modification strategy with examples. Finally, we have indicated the challenges of photocatalysis technology using g-C3N4 and proposed the opportunities for further development.

On the same micro-LED display panel, LED pixels are always operated with high and low biased voltages simultaneously to show different brightness and colors. Thus, it is vitally important to understand the effect of the heat transmission between LEDs under high and low biased voltages. In this work, we design two different LED groups: Group A is two LEDs bonded together for heat transmission and Group B is two LEDs separated from each other. Then, the two LEDs are operated at one fixed and one tuned biased voltage respectively in each group in a vacuum chamber and the efficiency of the two groups is studied both experimentally and numerically. Here, our experimental results demonstrate that Group A exhibits a maximum improvement of 15.36% in optical output power compared with Group B. The underlying reason is that the wall-plug efficiency of the LED with a voltage lower than photon voltage (V < ℏω/q) is surprisingly enhanced by elevated temperature owing to the heat transmission by the LED under a high biased voltage in Group A. Our further study shows that in such a low voltage region the improvement in the efficiency is attributed to the enhanced carrier concentrations with elevated temperature. On the other hand, the LED in Group A under a high biased voltage further raises the overall efficiency by alleviating the thermal droop due to reduced temperature. Device temperature measurement and numerical calculation of radiative recombination under different temperatures further support the superior performance of Group A LEDs. Our research results can act as the research prototype to design the high-efficient LED arrays for better energy recycling and thermal control.

Conversion of hazardous compounds to value-added chemicals using clean energy possesses massive industrial interest. This applies especially to the hazardous compounds that are frequently released in daily life. In this work, a S-scheme photocatalyst is optimized by rational loading of carbon quantum dots (CQDs) during the synthetic process. As a bridge, the presence of CQDs between TiO2 and CdIn2S4 improves the electron extraction from TiO2 and supports the charge transport in S-scheme. Thanks to this, the TiO2/CQDs/CdIn2S4 presents outstanding photoactivity in converting the polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) released by cigarette to value-added benzaldehyde. The optimized photocatalyst performs 87.79% conversion rate and 72.76% selectivity in 1 h reaction under a simulated solar source, as confirmed by FT-IR and GC-MS. A combination of experiments and theoretical calculations are conducted to demonstrate the role of CQDs in TiO2/CQDs/CdIn2S4 toward photocatalysis.

The recent technological trends toward miniaturization in lighting and display devices are accelerating the requirement for high-performance and small-scale GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs). In this work, the effect of mesa size-reduction in the InGaN/GaN LEDs is systematically investigated in two lateral dimensions (x- and y-directions: parallel to and perpendicular to the line where p-n directions are) both experimentally and numerically. The role of the lateral size-reduction in the x- and y-directions in improving LED performance is separately identified through experimental and modeling investigations. The narrowed dimension in the x-direction is found to cause and dominate the alleviated current crowding phenomenon, while the size-reduction in the y-direction has a minor influence on that. The size-reduction in the y-orientation induces an increased ratio of perimeter-to-area in miniaturized LED devices, which leads to improved thermal dissipation and light extraction through the sidewalls. The grown and fabricated LED devices with varied dimensions further support this explanation. Then the effect of size-reduction on the LED performance is summarized. Moreover, three-micro-walls LED architecture is proposed and demonstrated to further promote light extraction and reduce the generation of the Joule heat. The findings in this work provide instructive guidelines and insights on device miniaturization, especially for micro-LED devices.

Abstract Both the variety and uniqueness of organic semiconductors has contributed to the rapid development of environmental engineering applications and renewable fuel production, typified by the photodegradation of organic pollutants or water splitting. This paper presents a rare example of an aggregation‐induced emission luminogen as a highly efficient photocatalyst for pollutant decomposition in an environmentally relevant application. Under irradiation, the tetraphenylethene‐based AIEgen (TPE‐Ca) exhibited high photo‐degradation efficiency of up to 98.7% of Rhodamine B (RhB) in aqueous solution. The possible photocatalytic mechanism was studied by electron paramagnetic resonance and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy spectra, electrochemistry, thermal imaging technology, ultra‐performance liquid chromatography and high‐definition mass spectrometry, as well as by density functional theory calculations. Among the many diverse AIEgens, this is the first AIEgen to be developed as a photocatalyst for the degradation of organic pollutants. This research will open up new avenues for AIEgens research, particularly for applications of environmental relevance.

Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in tobacco tar are regarded as a significant threat to human health. PAHs are formed due to the incomplete combustion of organics in tobacco and cigarette paper. Herein, for the first time, we extended the application of CsPbBr3 quantum dots (CsPbBr3) to the photocatalytic degradation of tobacco tar, which was collected from used cigarette filters. To optimize the photoactivity, CsPbBr3 was coupled with Bi2WO6 for the construction of a type-II photocatalyst. The photocatalytic performance of the CsPbBr3/Bi2WO6 composite was evaluated by the degradation rate of PAHs from tobacco tar under simulated solar irradiation. The results revealed that CsPbBr3/Bi2WO6 possesses a large specific surface area, outstanding absorption ability, good light absorption and rapid charge separation. As a result, in addition to good stability, the composite photocatalyst performed remarkably well in degrading PAHs (over 96% were removed in 50 mins of irradiation by AM 1.5 G). This study sheds light on promising novel applications of halide perovskite.

The outstanding optoelectronic performance and facile synthetic approach of metal halide perovskites has inspired additional applications well beyond efficient solar cells and light emitting diodes (LEDs). Herein, we present an alternative option available for the optimisation of selective and efficient oxidation of benzylic alcohols through photocatalysis. The materials engineering of hybrids based on formamidine lead bromide (FAPbBr3) and graphic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is achieved via facile anti-solvent approach. The photocatalytic performance of the hybrids is highly reliant on weight ratio between FAPbBr3 and g-C3N4. Besides, the presence of g-C3N4 dramatically enhances the long-term stability of the hybrids, compared to metal oxides hybrids. Detailed optical, electrical and thermal studies reveal the proposed novel photocatalytic and stability behaviours arising in FAPbBr3 and g-C3N4 hybrid materials.

This work focuses on the development of a novel organic–inorganic photoactive material composited by aggregation-induced emission luminogens (AIE) and CdS. Tetraphenylethene-based AIE (TPE-Ca) is synthesized on CdS to form CdS/TPE-Ca electrode, due to its suitable band structure and potential capability of renewable energy production. The CdS/TPE-Ca electrode presents over three-fold improved photocurrent density and dramatically reduced interfacial resistance, compared with the pure CdS electrode. In addition, the engineering of the band alignment allows the holes to accumulate on the valance band of TPE-Ca, which would partially prevent the CdS from photo-corrosion, thus improving the stability of the sacrificial-free electrolyte photoelectrochemical cell.

Incident angle variation of light from the sun is a critical factor for the practical utilizations of solar energy devices. These devices typically receive the zenith of photon density under a solar elevation angle of 90°, and dramatic deletion of light density along with the decrease of solar elevation angle. Photonic crystals (PCs) with long range ordered arrays possess the controllable position of the photonic stop band (PSB) reliant on several factors, including incident angles, based on the Bragg–Snell law. The multiple scattering, refraction and inhibition of charge carrier recombination within the PSB suggests the potential capability for improving the efficiency of photoactive materials. In this work, we focus on the multiple scattering and refraction effects of PCs. A photoelectrode based on photonic crystal fluorine-doped tin oxide (PC FTO) film was fabricated, which allows the embedded photoactive materials (CdS nanoparticles) to benefit from the features of PCs under variable incidence, especially under lower incidence. The photoelectrode thus has enhanced overall photoelectrochemical (PEC) efficiency in different seasons, even if the increased surface area factor is deducted.

In addition to the most common applications of macroporous film: Supplying a large surface area, PC-FTO (macroporous fluorine-doped tin oxide with photonic crystal structure) can be employed as a template to control the morphologies of WO3 for exposing a more active facet, and enhance the overall photo-electron conversion efficiency for the embedded photoactive materials under changing illumination incidence through refracting and scattering. The optical features of PC-FTO film was demonstrated by DRUVS (diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectra). Plate-like WO3 were directly synthesized inside the PC-FTO film as a control group photoanode, Ag2S quantum dots were subsequently decorated on WO3 to tune the light absorption range. The impact of photonic crystal film on the photoactivity of Ag2S/WO3 was demonstrated by using the photoelectrochemical current density as a function of the incidence of the simulated light source.

Recently, all-inorganic perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) have attracted both academic and industrial interest thanks to their outstanding properties, such as high efficiency, bright luminance, excellent color purity, low cost and potentially good operational stability. Apart from the design and treatment of all-inorganic emitters, the device engineering is another significant factor to guarantee the high performance. In this review, we have summarized the state-of-the-art concepts for device engineering in all-inorganic PeLEDs, where the charge injection, transport, balance and leakage play a critical role in the performance. First, we have described the fundamental concepts of all-inorganic PeLEDs. Then, we have introduced the enhancement of device engineering in all-inorganic PeLEDs. Particularly, we have comprehensively highlighted the emergence of all-inorganic PeLEDs, strategies to improve the hole injection, approaches to enhance the electron injection, schemes to increase the charge balance and methods to decrease the charge leakage. Finally, we have clarified the issues and ways to further enhance the performance of all-inorganic PeLEDs.

This work focuses on the crystal size dependence of photoactive materials and light absorption enhancement of the addition of carbon dots (CDs). mac-FTO (macroporous fluorine-doped tin oxide) films with an inverse opal structure are exploited to supply enhanced load sites and to induce morphology control for the embedded photoactive materials. The Bi2WO6@mac-FTO photoelectrode is prepared directly inside a mac-FTO film using a simple in situ synthesis method, and the application of CDs to the Bi2WO6@mac-FTO is achieved through an impregnation assembly for the manipulation of light absorption. The surface morphology, chemical composition, light absorption characteristics and photocurrent density of the photoelectrode are analyzed in detail by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), UV−vis diffuse reflectance spectra (DRS), Energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and linear sweep voltammetry (LSV).
