Abstract This study presents the clinical profile of a 74-year-old male patient admitted to the hospital due to a 20-day history of coughing, chest tightness, and dyspnea. Upon admission, the patient presented with fever, tachycardia, and tachypnea. Clinical examination revealed evidence of lung infection, sepsis, and multi-organ dysfunction, alongside abnormal blood gas analysis and elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) levels. Pathogen testing confirmed Chlamydia psittaci (C. psittaci), infection. Throughout the treatment course, the patient developed concurrent fungal and viral infections, necessitating a comprehensive approach involving combined antibiotic and antifungal therapy. Despite encountering treatment-related complications, the patient demonstrated clinical improvement with aggressive management. This case underscores the importance of recognizing immune suppression subsequent to Chlamydia infection, emphasizing the critical role of early diagnosis, intervention, and standardized treatment protocols in enhancing patient prognosis.

Summary: Prioritizing electric power system decarbonization is crucial for meeting global carbon neutrality targets. However, the role of energy technology cost reduction driven by innovation in advancing carbon neutrality in the electric power system has not been well studied. To fill this gap, an integrated investment planning and operation model is developed to simulate the carbon neutral pathway in the electric power system over a 30-year period from 2020 to 2050. The learning curves with different learning rates are incorporated into the model to represent different energy technology innovation scenarios. According to our results, the advanced innovation scenario is projected to achieve carbon neutrality in the electric power system five years earlier compared with the conservative innovation scenario, with a cost savings of 465 billion CNY. In addition, both inter-regional and intra-regional collaboration facilitate the achievement of carbon neutrality in the electric power system at a reduced cost. Science for society: Reducing carbon emissions and achieving carbon neutrality is a critical global challenge. Previous studies have formulated pathways for energy transition in the electric power system to meet carbon reduction targets. However, many of them overlook the role of energy technology cost reduction driven by innovation in advancing carbon neutrality in the electric power system. In this study, an integrated investment planning and operation model is developed to simulate the transition pathway in the electric power system from 2020 to 2050 toward carbon neutrality under different innovation scenarios. Our results reveal that carbon neutrality can be achieved earlier and more cost effectively in the advanced energy technology innovation scenario. Furthermore, expanding both inter-regional and intra-regional transmission capacities can facilitate the achievement of carbon neutrality in the electric power system at a reduced cost.

A better understanding of the distribution of nonaqueous phase liquid (NAPL) plumes is of great importance to groundwater pollution remediation and control. However, the efficiency of surrogate models in simulating the transport is still not well addressed. Selecting a leakage problem as an example, 50 sets of random permeability distributions are generated using the Monte Carlo method, and a numerical model is used to obtain benchmark data of NAPL transport. Four machine learning methods are employed to simulate dense NAPL transport under point leakage sources across spatiotemporal scales. The validation of the models demonstrate that the random forest model can also effectively capture the spatial-temporal distribution of the plume in heterogeneous aquifers, with a maximum mean absolute error and root mean square error smaller than 5.55 × 10−4 and 5.88 × 10−5, respectively. Meanwhile, the multiple phase outcome from the random forest model fits well with the numerical results under the scenarios of linear leakage sources and light NAPL transport. The total time consumed in the computation is reduced by over 150 times after using the surrogate models. The results suggest that surrogate models can provide a promising way to understand NAPL transport in heterogeneous aquifers. HIGHLIGHTS Numerical solutions provided the NAPL transport benchmark dataset under different scenarios.; Four ML models were trained to capture DNAPL transport across the spatial-temporal scales.; The RF model had the best performance in reproducing multiphase transport in terms of both the accuracy and calculation efficiency.; Surrogate models provided promising applicability to quickly and effectively evaluate NAPL transport.;

Abstract Background The combination of the endocannabinoid system (ECS) and the type 2 cannabinoid receptor (CB2R) can activate various signal pathways, leading to distinct pathophysiological roles. This interaction has gained significant attention in recent research on fibrosis diseases. Focal adhesion kinase (FAK) plays a crucial role in regulating signals from growth factor receptors and Integrins. It is also involved in the transformation of fibroblasts into myofibroblasts. This study aims to investigate the impact of the CB2R agonist JWH133 on lung fibrosis and its potential to alleviate pulmonary fibrosis in mice through the FAK pathway. Methods The C57 mice were categorized into five groups: control, BLM, BLM + JWH133, BLM + JWH133 + NC, and BLM + JWH133 + FAK groups.JWH133 was administered to mice individually or in conjunction with the FAK vector. After 21 days, pathological changes in mouse lung tissues, inflammatory factor levels, hydroxyproline levels, and collagen contents were evaluated. Moreover, the levels of the FAK/ERK/S100A4 pathway-related proteins were measured. Results JWH133 treatment decreased inflammatory factor levels, attenuated pathological changes, and reduced extracellular matrix accumulation in the mouse model of bleomycin-induced pulmonary fibrosis; however, these effects were reversed by FAK. JWH133 attenuated fibrosis by regulating the FAK/ERK/S100A4 pathway. Conclusions The results presented in this study show that JWH133 exerts a protective effect against pulmonary fibrosis by inhibiting the FAK/ERK/S100A4 pathway.Therefore, JWH133 holds promise as a potential therapeutic target for pulmonary fibrosis.

BackgroundIdiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a chronic progressive interstitial lung disease. This study aimed to investigate the involvement of endoplasmic reticulum stress (ERS) in IPF and explore its correlation with immune infiltration.MethodsERS-related differentially expressed genes (ERSRDEGs) were identified by intersecting differentially expressed genes (DEGs) from three Gene Expression Omnibus datasets with ERS-related gene sets. Gene Set Variation Analysis and Gene Ontology were used to explore the potential biological mechanisms underlying ERS. A nomogram was developed using the risk signature derived from the ERSRDEGs to perform risk assessment. The diagnostic value of the risk signature was evaluated using receiver operating characteristics, calibration, and decision curve analyses. The ERS score of patients with IPF was measured using a single-sample Gene Set Enrichment Analysis (ssGSEA) algorithm. Subsequently, a prognostic model based on the ERS scores was established. The proportion of immune cell infiltration was assessed using the ssGSEA and CIBERSORT algorithms. Finally, the expression of ERSRDEGs was validated in vivo and in vitro via RT-qPCR.ResultsThis study developed an 8-ERSRDEGs signature. Based on the expression of these genes, we constructed a diagnostic nomogram model in which agouti-related neuropeptide had a significantly greater impact on the model. The area under the curve values for the predictive value of the ERSRDEGs signature were 0.975 and 1.000 for GSE70866 and GSE110147, respectively. We developed a prognostic model based on the ERS scores of patients with IPF. Furthermore, we classified patients with IPF into two subtypes based on their signatures. The RT-qPCR validation results supported the reliability of most of our conclusions.ConclusionWe developed and verified a risk model using eight ERSRDEGs. These eight genes can potentially affect the progression of IPF by regulating ERS and immune responses.

Abstract Amifostine is a normal cell protection agent, not only used in the adjuvant therapy of lung cancer, ovarian cancer, breast cancer, nasopharyngeal cancer, bone tumor, digestive tract tumor, blood system tumor and other cancers in order to reduce the toxicity of chemotherapy drugs, and recent studies have reported that the drug can also reduce lung tissue damage in patients with pulmonary fibrosis, but its mechanism of action is not yet fully understood. In this study, we explored the potential therapeutic effects and molecular mechanisms of AMI on bleomycin (BLM)-induced pulmonary fibrosis in mice. A mouse model of pulmonary fibrosis was established using BLM. We then assessed histopathological changes, inflammatory factors, oxidative indicators, apoptosis, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, extracellular matrix changes, and levels of phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt/mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) signaling pathway-related proteins in the BLM-treated mice to determine the effect of AMI treatment on these factors. BLM-treated mice had substantial lung inflammation and abnormal extracellular matrix deposition. Overall, treatment with AMI significantly improved BLM-induced lung injury and pulmonary fibrosis. More specifically, AMI alleviated BLM-induced oxidative stress, inflammation, alveolar cell apoptosis, epithelial-mesenchymal transition, and extracellular matrix deposition by regulating the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway. This finding that AMI can alleviate pulmonary fibrosis in a mouse model by inhibiting activation of the PI3K/Akt/mTOR signaling pathway lays a foundation for potential future clinical application of this agent in patients with pulmonary fibrosis.

General sign language recognition models are only designed for recognizing categories, i.e., such models do not discriminate standard and nonstandard sign language actions made by learners. It is inadequate to use in a sign language education software. To address this issue, this paper proposed a sign language category and standardization correctness discrimination model for sign language education. The proposed model is implemented with a hand detection and standard sign language discrimination method. For hand detection, the proposed method utilizes flow-guided features and acquires relevant proposals using stable and flow key frame detections. This model can resolve the inconsistency between the forward optical flow and the box center point offset. In addition, the proposed method employs an encoder-decoder model structure for sign language correctness discrimination. The encoder model combines 3D convolution and 2D deformable convolution results with residual structures, and it implements a sequence attention mechanism. A Sign Language Correctness Discrimination dataset (SLCD dataset) was also constructed in this study. In this dataset, each sign language video has two recognition labels, i.e., sign language category and standardization category. The semi-supervised learning method was employed to generate pseudo hand position labels. The hand detection model was getting sufficiently high hand detection result. The sign language correctness discrimination model was tested with hand patches or full images. SLCD dataset is available at https://dx.doi.org/10.21227/p9sn-dz70.

Lacustrine sedimentary processes exhibit high sensitivity to paleoenvironmental changes, often manifesting as high-frequency sedimentary cycles that control the complex variations in sedimentary structure, mineral composition, and element distribution. However, the intricate co-variation mechanism among paleoclimate and paleowater properties at a high precision level (centimeter to meter scale) is still controversial. This study focuses on conducting a high-frequency cycle analysis of lacustrine mixed rocks from the Eocene Lower Ganchaigou Formation (LGCG) in the Qaidam Basin, employing petrology, mineralogy, organic geochemistry, and elemental geochemistry techniques. The lithological variation was characterized by the superposition of three lithofacies types from the bottom to the top with a single sequence: massive sandstone, laminated silty shale, and bedded calcareous dolostone. Geochemical data revealed cyclical variations in the paleoenvironment in the vertical profile, which conformed to the high-frequency lithofacies cycles. Based on the reconstruction of the lake level and paleowater properties, a synthesized paleoclimate–sedimentary model that comprised three consecutive periods within an individual sequence was established. From the bottom to the top of each cycle, the Eocene paleoenvironment varied from reduction and desalination to oxidation and salinization, which was controlled by a decline in the lake level resulting from a transformation of the paleoclimate from warm and humid to cold and arid. The variations in petrology and geochemistry observed in the Eocene Qaidam Basin play a crucial role in comprehending the sedimentary response to paleoenvironmental changes at high precision levels within lacustrine settings.

To deeply analyze the thalassochemical conditions and organic matter enrichment mechanism during the Early Cambrian (541-509 Ma)and actively evaluate the potential of shale gas resources of the Lower Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation(Fm) in the southwestern Sichuan Basin, based on the analysis of the petrology, organic geochemistry, element characteristics, pore structure and adsorption capacity of Qiongzhusi Formation, Well W-207, Weiyuan area, this study has discussed the Early Cambrian paleo-ocean environment, organic matter enrichment control factors and gas-bearing properties of shale gas in the upslope area of the Upper Yangtze Platform. Sedimentary cycle shows that multiple interactive conversioncycles of deep-water continental shelf and shallow-water continental shelf are developed during the fine-grained deposition period of Qiongzhusi Formation under the control of eustasy. In particular, the slope turbidite (fan) and gravity flow sediments indicate that shallow-water continental shelf facies are dominant, and the wells in the upslope of the Weiyuan area are not in deep-water for a long time, with the sedimentary thickness of organic-rich black shale limited. Organic geochemistry evidence indicates that the organic matter of Qiongzhusi Formation in Well W-207 is mainly Type-Ⅰ kerogen, with a high degree of thermal evolution, fewer residual hydrocarbons and a low hydrocarbon generation capacity. The redox parameters indicate that the marine environment on the upslope has a medium restrictive degree, and there is a certain degree of upwelling. The seawater has experienced the transformation process of "anoxic-oxidation-anoxic-secondary oxidation- oxidation". Therefore, the paleo-ocean productivity level in the upslope area is generally low, with an obvious downward trend from bottom to top. The pore structure and nitrogen adsorption curve show that the reservoirs of the Qiongzhusi Formation are mainly complex and irregular slit pores. The methane adsorption capacity is positively correlated with TOC but negatively correlated with temperature, indicating that the high-pressure and high-temperature conditions generally faced by the Qiongzhusi Fm are not suitable for methane adsorption. As a result, the geological conditions of shale gas for Qiongzhusi Fm in the upslope area are complex. With high exploration risk, this study suggests that the resource evaluation direction should change to the intracratonic sag (downslope area), which is characterized by deep-water continental shelf facies.

The inhibitory activity of lactic acid bacteria (LAB) toward advanced glycation end-products (AGEs) during vinegar fermentation was studied, and its relationships with the substrate consumption, antioxidant capacity, total phenolic content, total flavonoid compounds, α-glucosidase, and α-amylase activity inhibition were evaluated. The vinegar was made from rice powder flour by liquid-state fermentation (LSF). The selected LAB strains were separately co-cultivated with Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Acetobacter pasteurianus 1.41 in alcoholic and acetic acid fermentation, respectively. Among 3 strains, Lactobacillus fermentum showed the strongest inhibitory effect on the formation of total fluorescent AGEs and carboxymethyl lysine (CML)/carboxyethyl lysine (CEL) in the fermentation process. The corresponding mechanisms included the acceleration of substrate consumption, improvement of antioxidant activities, and inhibition of α-glucosidase and α-amylase. In addition, the fluorescent AGEs and the CML/CEL were negatively correlated with the antioxidant activities, while the α-glucosidase and α-amylase activities were positively correlated with the total phenols and total flavonoids. Moreover, the variety of main flavor compounds increased, including esters, alcohols, phenols and acids. The results of the study support the potential use of screened LAB strains to inhibit the formation of fluorescent AGEs, CML and CEL on fermented products and in the food processing industry, without associated risks to consumers.

Groundwater depletion is adversely affecting Beijing’s ecology and environment. However, the effective execution of the South-to-North Water Diversion Project’s middle route (SNDWP-MR) is anticipated to mitigate Beijing’s groundwater depletion. Here, we propose a robust hybrid statistical downscaling method aimed at enhancing the capability of the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) to detect the small-scale groundwater storage anomaly (GWSA) in Beijing. We used three deep learning (DL) methods to reconstruct the 0.5° × 0.5° terrestrial water storage anomaly (TWSA) between 2004 and 2021. Moreover, multiple processing strategies were used to downscale the GWSA to 0.25° from 2004 to 2021 by integrating wells and GRACE/GRACE follow-on data from the optimal DL model. Additionally, we analyzed the spatiotemporal evolution trends of GW in Beijing before and after the implementation of the SNDWP-MR. The results show that the long short-term memory model delivers optimal performance in the TWSA reconstruction of Beijing, with the correlation coefficient (CC), Nash–Sutcliffe coefficient (NSE), and root mean square error (RMSE) being 0.98, 0.96, and 10.19 mm, respectively. The GWSA before and after downscaling is basically consistent with wells data, but the CC and RMSE of downscaling the GWSA from 2004 to 2021 are improving by 34% and 31%, respectively. Before the SNDWP-MR (2004–2014), the trend of GWSA in Beijing was −17.68 ± 4.46 mm/y, with a human contribution of 69.30%. After SNDWP-MR (2015–2021), GWSA gradually increased by 10.00 mm per year, with the SNDWP-MR accounting for 18.30%. This study delivers a technical innovation reference for dynamically monitoring a small-scale GWSA from GRACE/GRACE-FO data.

As global warming intensifies, the damage caused by drought cannot be disregarded. Traditional drought monitoring is often carried out with monthly resolution, which fails to monitor the sub-monthly climatic event. The GRACE-based drought severity index (DSI) is a drought index based on terrestrial water storage anomalies (TWSA) observed by the gravity recovery and climate experiment (GRACE) satellite. DSI has the ability to monitor drought effectively, and it is in good consistency with other drought monitoring methods. However, the temporal resolution of DSI is limited by that of GRACE observations, so it is necessary to obtain TWSA with a higher temporal resolution to calculate DSI. We use a statistical method to reconstruct the TWSA, which adopts precipitation and temperature to obtain TWSA on a daily resolution. This statistical method needs to be combined with the time series decomposition method, and then the parameters are simulated by the Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) procedure. In this study, we use this TWSA reconstruction method to obtain high-quality TWSA at daily time resolution. The correlation coefficient between CSR–TWSA and the reconstructed TWSA is 0.97, the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency is 0.93, and the root mean square error is 16.57. The quality of the reconstructed daily TWSA is evaluated, and the DSI on a daily resolution is calculated to analyze the drought phenomenon in the Pearl River basin (PRB). The results show that the TWSA reconstructed by this method has high consistency with other daily publicly available TWSA products and TWSA provided by the Center for Space Research (CSR), which proves the feasibility of this method. The correlation between DSI based on reconstructed daily TWSA, SPI, and SPEI is greater than 0.65, which is feasible for drought monitoring. From 2003 to 2021, the DSI recorded six drought events in the PRB, and the recorded drought is more consistent with SPI-6 and SPEI-6. There was a drought event from 27 May 2011 to 12 October 2011, and this drought event had the lowest DSI minimum (minimum DSI = −1.76) recorded among the six drought events. The drought monitored by the DSI is in line with government announcements. This study provides a method to analyze drought events at a higher temporal resolution, and this method is also applicable in other areas.

In informal landfills, leachate leaked into the underlying soil and groundwater has been gaining increasing attention. Recently, an informal low-permeability landfill site in northern China was investigated in detail, and it was found that the groundwater was contaminated by leachate. A groundwater flow and contamination transport model was developed using FEFLOW to forecast contaminant transport and evaluate feasible pollutant control schemes. In this model, good matches between the simulated and observed groundwater level and good matches between the simulated and observed concentration of ammonia nitrogen show that the established model can reproduce the process of groundwater movement effectively. Three kinds of schemes, including natural conditions, pollution source removal, and pump and treatment, were simulated, and the results were compared. The results showed that, under natural conditions, the pollution does not travel far horizontally and vertically. Removal of pollution sources has little effect on the concentration of ammonia nitrogen in groundwater over a period of 100 years. The pump and treatment system can effectively remove high concentrations of ammonia nitrogen in the groundwater of the landfill site, with a maximum decline of over 90%. Therefore, the pump and treatment method may be valid for short-term soil and groundwater remediation. Although the fatty liver has been linked to numerous impairments of energy homeostasis, the molecular mechanism responsible for fatty liver development remains largely unknown. In the present study, we show that fibroblast growth factors 9 (FGF9) expression is increased in the liver of diet-induced obese (DIO), db/db, and ob/ob mice relative to their respective controls. The long-term knockdown of hepatic FGF9 expression mediated by adeno-associated virus expressing FGF9-specific short hairpin RNA (AAV-shFGF9) aggravated the fatty liver phenotype of DIO mice. Consistently, downregulation of FGF9 expression mediated by adenovirus expressing FGF9-specific shRNA (Ad-shFGF9) in the primary hepatocyte promoted the cellular lipid accumulation, suggesting that FGF9 exerts its effects in an autocrine manner. In contrast, adenoviruses expressing FGF9 (Ad-FGF9) mediated FGF9 overexpression in the liver of DIO mice alleviated hepatic steatosis and improved the insulin sensitivity and glucose intolerance. Moreover, the liver-specific FGF9 transgenic mice phenocopied the Ad-FGF9-infected mice. Mechanistically, FGF9 inhibited the expression of genes involved in lipogenesis and increased the expression of genes involved in fatty acid oxidation, thereby reducing cellular lipid accumulation. Thus, targeting FGF9 might be exploited to treat nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) and metabolic syndrome.

For a more in-depth analysis on the marine chemical condition during the earliest Cambrian, mechanism of organic matter enrichment and exploration potential of shale gas resources, based on the petrology, organic geochemistry, and elemental characteristics of the W207 Well, this study discuss the Early Cambrian paleo-ocean environment and factors controlling of organic matter enrichment during the deposition of black strata Qiongzhusi Formation in the upslope areas, southwestern Sichuan Basin, Yangtze Block, China. The sedimentary cycles show that during the depositon of fine-grained Qiongzhusi Fm, interactive cycles of multiple deep-water and shallow-water shelf developed, and were controlled by the rise and fall in sea level. In particular, the slope turbidite (fan) and gravity flow sediments indicate that the shallow-water shelf facies were dominant in the upslope area (SW Sichuan Basin), where not in deep water for a long time, and the sedimentary thickness of the organic rich black shale was limited. Evidence from organic geochemistry indicates that the organic matter of the Qiongzhusi Fm from the W207 Well was mainly of type I kerogen, with a high degree of thermal evolution, little residual hydrocarbon, and low capacity for hydrocarbon generation. The redox parameters indicate that the marine environment on the upslope was medium restrictive, with some upwelling. The seawater had undergone a transformation according to anoxic–oxidic. Therefore, paleo-ocean productivity in the upslope area was generally low, and exhibited a prominent downward trend from bottom to top. Given its high risk of exploration, the authors suggest that the direction of shale gas resource evaluation should change to the intracratonic sag (downslope) area, which is characterized by deep-water shelf facies.

With the continuous advancement in technology, electronic products used in augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) have gradually entered the public eye. As a result, the power supplies of these electronic devices have attracted more attention from scientists. Compared to traditional power sources, triboelectric nanogenerators (TENGs) are gradually being used for energy harvesting in self-powered sensing technology such as wearable flexible electronics, including AR and VR devices due to their small size, high conversion efficiency, and low energy consumption. As a result, TENGs are the most popular power supplies for AR and VR products. This article first summarizes the working mode and basic theory of TENGs, then reviews the TENG modules used in AR and VR devices, and finally summarizes the material selection and design methods used for TENG preparation. The friction layer of the TENG can be made of a variety of materials such as polymers, metals, and inorganic materials, and among these, polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) are the most popular materials. To improve TENG performance, the friction layer material must be suitable. Therefore, for different application scenarios, the design methods of the TENG play an important role in its performance, and a reasonable selection of preparation materials and design methods can greatly improve the work efficiency of the TENG. Lastly, we summarize the current research status of nanogenerators, analyze and suggest future application fields, and summarize the main points of material selection.

In order to study the impact resistance of civil air defense engineering shear wall, the impact resistance of civil air defense engineering shear wall was studied by combining finite element numerical simulation with pendulum impact test. The effects of impact height, pendulum mass, and impact times on the impact resistance of civil air defense engineering shear walls were analyzed. It was shown that when the impact height increased from 0.4 m to 2.5 m, the failure mode of civil air defense engineering shear wall tended to be local impact failure, and the horizontal displacement in the middle of the wall span increased. The concrete crushing occurred in the impact area of the back of the civil air defense engineering shear wall. The increase in the impact height is a negative factor for the impact resistance of the civil air defense engineering shear wall. With the increase of pendulum weight, the number of concrete horizontal cracks in the back of the civil air defense engineering shear wall increased, while the number of vertical cracks decreased, but the impact surface was destroyed. Through multiple impact tests on the civil air defense engineering shear wall, the civil air defense engineering shear wall had accumulated damage. The longitudinally loaded steel on the back reached the ultimate strength, and there are large cracks at the bottom and even collapses. The increase of impact times has a great influence on the impact resistance of the civil air defense engineering shear wall. Through the analysis of the factors affecting the impact resistance of civil air defense engineering shear wall, it provides guidance for civil air defense engineering shear wall to resist impact load.

In order to study the distributions of the biomarker of the continental source rocks in the Sichuan Basin, 71 source rock samples were collected from the Upper Triassic-Lower Jurassic strata in different regions. The n- alkanes, isoprenoids, terpane, sterane, sesquiterpenes, caranes and aromatics in the extracts were analyzed in detail. GC-MS analysis has been conducted to analyze the biomarker of the continental source rocks. The results of GC-MS analysis indicate that the Upper Triassic source rocks are high in the content of extended tricyclic terpanes, pristane, phytane, gammacerane, C 28 regular sterane and carotene. However, they are low in content of rearranged compounds. The ratio of Pr/Ph is less than 1, with the characteristics of tricyclic terpane C 21 > C 23 . The Lower Jurassic source rocks are extremely low in content (even zero) of extended tricyclic terpanes, pristane, phytane, gammacerane, C 28 regular sterane and carotene, and high in content of rearranged compounds. The ratio of Pr/Ph is more than 1, with tricyclic terpane C 21 > C 23 . These characteristics are still preserved after maturation. Moreover, during the sedimentation of the source rocks of T 3 x 2 –T 3 x 3 members, the supply of continental plants was low (TAR C 29 , 1-MP/9-MP C 29 , 1-MP/9-MP

Groundwater inflow to an underground mine will seriously affect its mining plan and engineering geology safety. Groundwater models are powerful tools commonly used in the mines to develop dewatering strategies. Many mines in the Kolwezi area have been present since the 1950s, and groundwater flow patterns have been significantly influenced by mining activities. A mining plan is developed for an underground mine with overturned syncline strata in Kolwezi, Congo. Previous groundwater models using layered homogeneous media lowered model accuracies. A new three-dimensional groundwater model using FEFLOW, consisting of a combined regionally and locally geology models integrating 16 hydrogeological cross-sections and borehole logging data, are formulated to predict the underground dewatering in the study area. A 31-days pumping tests with 3 pumping wells and 28 observation wells are carried out to estimate the hydrogeological properties. The simulated water level data match the observed data rather well. Under 8 scenarios of possible well designs, the model predicts a possible dewatering capacity greater 23,900 m3/d at the initial stage of mining. The concept of the model and its application can be a reference for other mines with complex geology for mining safety in the region of interest.

Background and objectives: Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive brain degeneration and is associated with a high prevalence of sleep disorders. Amyloid β peptide-42/40 (Aβ42/40) and Tau-pT181 are the core biomarkers in cerebrospinal fluid and blood. Accumulated data from studies in mouse models and humans demonstrated an aberrant elevation of these biomarkers due to sleep disturbance, especially sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). However, it is not clear if sleep quality improvement reduces the blood levels of Ab42/40 ratio and Tau-pT181 in Alzheimer’s disease patients. Materials and Methods: In this prospective study, a longitudinal analysis was conducted on 64 patients with mild–moderate cognition impairment (MCI) due to Alzheimer’s disease accompanied by SDB. Another 33 MCI cases without sleep-disordered breathing were included as the control group. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) score system. Neuropsychological assessments were conducted using the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Geriatric Depression Scale (GDS), Clinical Dementia Rating (CDR), 24-h Hamilton Rating Scale for Depression (HRSD-24), and Hamilton Anxiety Rating Scale (HAMA) scoring systems. Aβ42, Aβ40, and Tau-pT181 protein levels in blood specimens were measured using ELISA assays. All patients received donepezil treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. SDB was managed with continuous pressure ventilation. Results: A significant correlation was found among PSQI, HRSD-24, HAMA, Aβ42/40 ratio, and Tau-pT181 level in all cases. In addition, a very strong and negative correlation was discovered between education level and dementia onset age. Compared to patients without SDB (33 non-SD cases), patients with SDB (64 SD cases) showed a significantly lower HRSD-24 score and a higher Aβ42/40 ratio Tau-pT181 level. Sleep treatment for patients with SDB significantly improved all neuropsychological scores, Aβ42/40 ratio, and Tau-pT181 levels. However, 11 patients did not completely recover from a sleep disorder (PSQI > 5 post-treatment). In this subgroup of patients, although HAMA score and Tau-pT181 levels were significantly reduced, MoCA and HRSD-24 scores, as well as Aβ42/40 ratio, were not significantly improved. ROC analysis found that the blood Aβ42/40 ratio held the highest significance in predicting sleep disorder occurrence. Conclusions: This is the first clinical study on sleep quality improvement in Alzheimer’s disease patients. Sleep quality score was associated with patient depression and anxiety scores, as well as Aβ42/40 ratio and Tau-pT181 levels. A complete recovery is critical for fully improving all neuropsychological assessments, Aβ42/40 ratio, and Tau-pT181 levels. Blood Aβ42/40 ratio is a feasible prognostic factor for predicting sleep quality.

This paper formulates a two-stage stochastic programming model for energy and reserve joint dispatch considering wind power uncertainty and the participation of incentive-based demand response (IBDR). The model consists two stages, the first stage is to determine the day-ahead energy dispatch and the reserve capacity need, the second stage is to determine the deployment of reserves to accommodate the realisation of wind power uncertainty in real time. The IBDR program and the thermal power units provide reserve together to cope with the uncertainty of wind power. The IBDR model considers the maximum response times of a DR agent during a day to assure the reliability of using electricity for end users. To reduce the computation burden caused by wind power scenarios, the inactive constraints identification method is utilised to eliminate redundant transmission line constraints before solving the original model. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed model and the solving method are tested on the modified IEEE 118-bus test system with 50 DR agents.

Terrestrial water storage (TWS) is a key element in the global and continental water cycle. Since 2002, the Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment (GRACE) has provided a highly valuable dataset, which allows the study of TWS over larger river basins worldwide. However, the lifetime of GRACE is too short to demonstrate long-term variability in TWS. In the Beishan area of northwestern China, which is selected as the most prospective site for high-level radioactive waste (HLRW) disposal, the assessment of long-term TWS changes is crucial to understand disposal safety. Monthly and annual TWS changes during the past 35 years are reconstructed using GRACE data, other remote sensing products, and the water balance method. Hydrological flux outputs from multisource remote sensing products are analyzed and compared to select appropriate data sources. The results show that a decreasing trend is found for GRACE-filtered and Center for Space Research (CSR) mascon solutions from 2003 to 2015, with slopes of −2.30 ± 0.52 and −1.52 ± 0.24 mm/year, respectively. TWS variations independently computed from the water balance method also show a similar decreasing trend with the GRACE observations, with a slope of −0.94 mm/year over the same period. Overall, the TWS anomalies in the Beishan area change seasonally within 10 mm and have been decreasing since 1980, keeping a desirable dry condition as a HLRW disposal site.

To utilize the rapidly refreshed operating data of power systems fully and effectively, an integrated scheme for inter-area oscillatory stability assessment (OSA) is proposed in this paper using a compositive feature selection unit and random bits forest (RBF) algorithm. This scheme consists of offline, update, and online stages, and it can provide fast and accurate estimation of the oscillatory stability margin (OSM) by using the real-time system operating data. In this scheme, a compositive feature selection unit is specially designed to realize efficient feature selection, which can significantly reduce the data dimensionality, effectively alleviate feature redundancy, and provide accurate correlation information to system operators. Then, the feature set consisting of the selected pivotal features is used for the RBF training to build the mapping relationships between the OSM and the system operating variables. Moreover, to enhance the robustness of the scheme in the face of variable operating conditions, an update stage is developed. The effectiveness of the integrated scheme is verified on the IEEE 39-bus system and a larger 1648-bus system. Tests of estimation accuracy, data processing speed, and the impact of missing data and noise data on this scheme are implemented. Comparisons with other methods reveal the superiority of the integrated scheme. In addition, the robustness of the scheme to variations in system topology, distribution among generators and loads, and peak and minimum load is studied.

Due to the rapid development of phasor measurement units (PMUs) and the wide area of interconnection of modern power systems, the security of power systems is confronted with severe challenges. A novel framework based on data for static voltage stability margin (VSM) assessment of power systems is presented. The proposed framework can select the key operation variables as input features for the assessment based on partial mutual information (PMI). Before the feature selection procedure is completed by PMI, a feature preprocessing approach is applied to remove redundant and irrelevant features to improve computational efficiency. Using the selected key variables, a voltage stability assessment (VSA) model based on iterated random forest (IRF) can rapidly provide the relative VSM results. The proposed framework is examined on the IEEE 30-bus system and a practical 1648-bus system, and a desirable assessment performance is demonstrated. In addition, the robustness and computational speed of the proposed framework are also verified. Some impact factors for power system operation are studied in a robustness examination, such as topology change, variation of peak/minimum load, and variation of generator/load power distribution.

Overexploitation of groundwater resources has caused groundwater-related problems all over the world. Effective groundwater governance is a favorable guarantee for its protection and sustainable utilization. Accurate prediction of groundwater level (GWL) or depth to groundwater (GWD) plays an important role in groundwater resource management. Due to the limitations and complexity of numerical models, this study aims to develop surrogate models that can dually control the GWL (or GWD) and groundwater quantity (GWQ) in each district of the Beijing Plain, China, using the methods of multiple linear regression (MLR) and back propagation artificial neural network (BP-ANN). This study used 180 monthly GWD data records, including the first 168 data records for model development (training) and the remaining 12 data records for model verification. The results indicate that the Nash–Sutcliffe efficiency coefficient (NSE) and correlation coefficient (R) for both the MLR and BP-ANN models are high in most districts and that the MLR models are more appropriate in this study. Fifteen scenarios under different conditions of groundwater use and precipitation are designed to demonstrate the applicability of the developed model in groundwater management. The surrogate models are effective tools that can be used by decision-makers for groundwater management.

This study designed and implemented a personal learning environment platform for spoken English teaching in a junior high school in China to improve students' spoken English narrative competence. Altogether, 83 junior high school year one students took part in this study. The participants were divided into experimental and control classes for the two-month-long experiment. The personal learning environment-based spoken English platform was implemented in the experimental class, while the control class used traditional face-to-face instruction. Pre- and post-spoken English tests and semistructured interviews were used in the study. The data analysis revealed that PLEs has the potential to boost students' learning motivation and enthusiasm and improve their spoken English narrative performance as well. This study advanced practical research of PLEs in junior high school and enhanced the theoretical research in spoken English teaching.

The advent of the peer-to-peer energy trading has dramatically altered the conventional dynamics of distribution networks. Prosumers, managing independently and engaging in peer-to-peer (P2P) energy exchanges, introduce critical challenges for the economical and secure operations of these networks. This research presents a hierarchical framework designed to manage P2P energy interactions between prosumers and to facilitate flexible operation within the distribution network at the substation level. The upper layer of the model aims to stabilize market prices within the distribution framework, while the lower layer establishes a P2P energy trading platform that upholds fairness and safeguards the privacy of the prosumer participants. A fixed-point mapping approach is utilized to assess the interactions between market stabilization efforts and prosumer bidding strategies within this framework. Through simulations, we illustrate the logical soundness and effectiveness of our proposed model and approach. The findings indicate that the proposed model and the energy trading framework could substantially improve the overall welfare of all stakeholders involved. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Antibacterial isothiazolinones are refractory organic pollutants towards biodegradation, existing in reverse osmosis concentrated water and other relevant industrial wastewater, which need to be decomposed before getting discharged into a water body. Herein, we synthesized Gd-doped flower-like hierarchical BiOCl (PGE-BiOCl) with promoted visible light response using a facile solvothermal method. The pseudo-first-order rate constant of 1,2-benzisothiazolinone-3-one (BIT) degradation was enhanced 6.49-fold by PGE-BiOCl (k = 0.610 h-1) compared to BiOCl (k = 0.094 h-1) under simulated visible light. It is mainly due to the synergistic effect of abundant Ovs, highly exposed (110) dominant crystal planes, and Gd doping of PGE-BiOCl. The scavenger experiments and EPR characterizations indicated that O2•- was the dominant radical in the degradation system. The DFT calculation further confirmed the existence of O 2p orbitals near the Fermi level, which may narrow the band gap of BiOCl and improve the charge carrier separation efficiency. This work offered a promising approach for the preparation of an effective solar light-driven photocatalyst for the degradation of refractory organic pollutants in water. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
