X-ray analyzer-based imaging (ABI) is a powerful phase-sensitive technique that can provide a wide dynamic range of density and extract useful physical properties of the sample. It derives contrast from x-ray absorption, refraction, and scattering properties of the investigated sample. However, x-ray ABI setups can be susceptible to external vibrations, and mechanical imprecisions of system components, e.g., the precision of motor, which are unavoidable in practical experiments. Those factors will provoke deviations of analyzer angular positions and hence errors in the acquired image data. Consequently, those errors will introduce artefacts in the retrieved refraction and scattering images. These artefacts are disadvantageous for further image interpretation and tomographic reconstruction. For this purpose, this work aims to analyze image artefacts resulting from deviations of analyzer angular positions. Analytical expressions of the refraction and scattering image artefacts are derived theoretically and validated by synchrotron radiation experiments. The results show that for the refraction image, the artefact is independent of the sample’s absorption and scattering signals. By contrast, artefact of the scattering image is dependent on both the sample’s refraction and scattering signals, but not on absorption signal. Furthermore, the effect of deviations of analyzer angular positions on the accuracy of the retrieved images is investigated, which can be of use for optimization of data acquisition. This work offers the possibility to develop advanced multi-contrast image retrieval algorithms that suppress artefacts in the retrieved refraction and scattering images in x-ray analyzer-based imaging.

Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text, Adenoid cystic carcinoma (ACC) is one of the most frequent malignancies of salivary glands. The objective of this study was to identify key genes and potential mechanisms during ACC samples. The gene expression profiles of GSE88804 data set were downloaded from Gene Expression Omnibus. The GSE88804 data set contained 22 samples, including 15 ACC samples and 7 normal salivary gland tissues. The gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) pathway enrichment analyses were constructed, and protein–protein interaction network of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) was performed by Cytoscape. The top 10 hub genes were analyzed based on Gene Expression Profiling Interactive Analysis. Then, DEGs between ACC samples and normal salivary gland samples were analyzed by gene set enrichment analysis. Furthermore, miRTarBase and Cytoscape were used for visualization of miRNA-mRNA regulatory network. KEGG pathway analysis was undertaken using DIANA-miRPath v3.0. In total, 382 DEGs were identified, including 119 upregulated genes and 263 downregulated genes. GO analysis showed that DEGs were mainly enriched in extracellular matrix organization, extracellular matrix, and calcium ion binding. KEGG pathway analysis showed that DEGs were mainly enriched in p53 signaling pathway and salivary secretion. Expression analysis and survival analysis showed that ANLN, CCNB2, CDK1, CENPF, DTL, KIF11, and TOP2A are all highly expressed, which all may be related to poor overall survival. Predicted miRNAs of 7 hub DEGs mainly enriched in proteoglycans in cancer and pathways in cancer. This study indicated that identified DEGs and hub genes might promote our understanding of molecular mechanisms, which might be used as molecular targets or diagnostic biomarkers for ACC.

The functional characterization of non-coding microRNAs (miRNAs) has been shown to be associated with the pathophysiology of the disease, but it is still a challenging task to elucidate the pathogenesis of microRNAs and disease. In addition, the understanding of the role of miRNAs in the development of LSCC still needs further exploration.In this study, to identify miRNAs that play a key role in LSCC, we analyzed miRNA and mRNA sequence data from 162 LSCC samples from the TCGA database, and screened specific miRNAs and mRNAs by differential gene expression analysis. And then, construct a differentially expressed miRNAs and mRNAs interaction network.In our investigation, 23 miRNAs (P 0.01, log2FoldChange 2) and 331 mRNAs (P 0.01, log2FoldChange 4) were identified differentially expressed in LSCC and reduced the number of loosely linked miRNAs and mRNAs according to appropriate thresholds. Finally, 13 miRNAs and 35 mRNAs were enriched in a network.Our study provides the most comprehensive information on the expression of miRNAs in LSCC and identifies the known oncogenic miRNAs (such as miR-163a), as well as aberrant expression of novel miRNAs involved in cell regulation and metabolic defects that occur during development of LSCC.

Background The effect of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) therapy in patients after planned extubation remains inconclusive. We aimed to perform a rigorous and comprehensive systematic meta-analysis to robustly quantify the benefits of HFNC for patients after planned extubation by investigating postextubation respiratory failure and other outcomes. Method We searched MEDLINE, EMBASE, Web of Science, and the Cochrane Library from inception to August 2018. Two researchers screened studies and collected the data independently. Randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and crossover studies were included. The main outcome was postextubation respiratory failure. Results Ten studies (seven RCTs and three crossover studies; HFNC group: 856 patients; Conventional oxygen therapy (COT) group: 852 patients) were included. Compared with COT, HFNC may significantly reduce postextubation respiratory failure (RR, 0.61; 95% CI, 0.41, 0.92; z = 2.38; P = 0.02) and respiratory rates (standardized mean differences (SMD), − 0.70; 95% CI, − 1.16, − 0.25; z = 3.03; P = 0.002) and increase PaO2 (SMD, 0.30; 95% CI, 0.04, 0.56; z = 2.23; P = 0.03). There were no significant differences in reintubation rate, length of ICU and hospital stay, comfort score, PaCO2, mortality in ICU and hospital, and severe adverse events between HFNC and COT group. Conclusions Our meta-analysis demonstrated that compared with COT, HFNC may significantly reduce postextubation respiratory failure and respiratory rates, increase PaO2, and be safely administered in patients after planned extubation. Further large-scale, multicenter studies are needed to confirm our results. Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text, Immune infiltration of nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is closely associated with the patients’ prognosis. However, previous studies have not interpreted the difference of infiltrating immune cells in NPC. We comprehensively analyzed the tumor-infiltrating immune cells present in NPC for the first time, which was based on a scientific deconvolution algorithm (CIBERSORT) and the gene expression data of GSE64634. The fractions of 22 immune cells were assessed to reveal the associations between normal samples and NPC samples. Profiles of immune infiltration vary significantly between normal samples and NPC samples, and the variation could characterize the individual differences. NPC samples contained a higher proportion for M1 macrophages, whereas memory B cells and CD4 memory resting T cells were relatively lower. Our data suggest that the differences in the infiltrating immune cells in NPC and these differences would probably facilitate patient consultation and individualized treatment.

The option of T1a glottic cancer treatments remarkably varied in different countries. This study aimed to construct predictive models to predict overall survival (OS) and cancer-specific survival (CSS) of patients with initially diagnosed T1a glottic cancer. And we used propensity score matching (PSM) to reassess the effect of treatments.Data of patients with initially diagnosed T1a glottic cancer were extracted from the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results database. Patients with complete information were randomly divided into the training and the validation cohorts (7:3). Cox regression was conducted to screen significant predictors of the OS and the CSS. PSM was performed to mimic randomized controlled trials. Survival analyses were performed by Kaplan-Meier survival methods, and log-rank tests were utilized.A total of 2342 patients met the inclusion criteria. Survival analyses showed that patients who underwent primary site surgery would have better OS and CSS. Univariate analyses and multivariate analyses proved that stage, N stage, primary site surgery, and chemotherapy significantly affected both the OS and the CSS. Predictive nomograms were established to predict patients' prognosis. Finally, the OS and the CSS for patients who underwent primary site surgery alone were significantly longer than those who underwent radiation alone before and after PSM.We constructed nomograms predicting the OS and the CSS of patients with initially diagnosed T1a glottic cancer. Compared to our previous studies, this study indicated that primary site surgery may be superior to radiation and chemotherapy. At present, chemotherapy should be not recommended for T1a glottic cancer patients.

Supplemental Digital Content is available in the text, Autophagy, a major cause of cancer-related death, is correlated with the pathogenesis of various diseases including cancers. Our study aimed to develop an autophagy-related model for predicting prognosis of patients with laryngeal cancer. We analyzed the correlation between expression profiles of autophagy-related genes (ARGs) and clinical outcomes in 111 laryngeal cancer patients from The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA). Afterward, gene functional enrichment analyses of gene ontology (GO) and Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes (KEGG) were performed to find the major biological attributes. Univariate Cox regression analyses and multivariate Cox regression analyses were performed to screen ARGs whose expression profiles were significantly associated with laryngeal cancer patients overall survival (OS). Furthermore, to provide the doctors and patients with a quantitative method to perform an individualized survival prediction, we constructed a prognostic nomogram. Thirty eight differentially expressed ARGs were screened out in laryngeal cancer patients through the TCGA database. Related functional enrichments may act as tumor-suppressive roles in the tumorigenesis of laryngeal cancer. Subsequently, 4 key prognostic ARGs (IKBKB, ST13, TSC2, and MAP2K7) were identified from all ARGs by the Cox regression model, which significantly correlated with OS in laryngeal cancer. Furthermore, the risk score was constructed, which significantly divided laryngeal cancer patients into high- and low-risk groups. Integrated with clinical characteristics, gender, N and the risk score are very likely associated with patients OS. A prognostic nomogram of ARGs was constructed using the Cox regression model. Our study could provide a valuable prognostic model for predicting the prognosis of laryngeal cancer patients and a new understanding of autophagy in laryngeal cancer.

BACKGROUND Nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) is a prevalent malignancy in Asia particularly southern China. Comparisons of outcomes of conformal radiotherapy (CRT) and intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) have been still debated. This meta-analysis was carried out to compare oncologic outcomes of CRT and IMRT in the treatment of NPC. METHODS A literature search was performed through PubMed, Embase, and the Cochrane library databases from their inceptions to November 10, 2018. Two authors assessed the included studies and extracted data independently. Relative studies that compared oncologic outcomes between CRT and IMRT for NPC were included. RESULTS A total of 13 eligible studies were included, which contained 1 RCT, 1 prospective study, and 11 retrospective studies.
