The realization of intelligent and green manufacturing represents two core challenges currently faced by manufacturing enterprises. The "Intelligent Manufacturing Pilot Demonstration List" issued by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) of the People's Republic of China provides a sample of firms that have undergone stringent selection processes, demonstrating secure and controllable technological capabilities, with no intellectual property disputes. Using data from manufacturing firms listed on the Shanghai and Shenzhen stock exchanges from 2011 to 2020, we identify those that implemented intelligent manufacturing based on the aforementioned pilot list from 2015 to 2019 as the treatment group and the remaining firms as the control group to investigate whether intelligent manufacturing increases the number of green patent applications. The findings indicate that the implementation of intelligent manufacturing significantly increases green patent applications by 3.676% through three main pathways: reducing the level of financing constraints, improving resource utilization efficiency, and increasing R&D investment. Heterogeneity analysis reveals that state-owned enterprises exhibit a significantly stronger promotion effect on green innovation post-implementation of intelligent manufacturing compared to non-state-owned enterprises, with enterprises in the western region demonstrating the most pronounced enhancement in green innovation. This paper focuses on the role of high-speed rail (HSR) in promoting talent mobility and explores its heterogeneous impact in the employment distribution of local and neighboring regions. This empirical study uses data from 249 prefecture-level cities across the country from 2005 to 2018, combined with geographic spatial vector data. The results show that HSR connection significantly increases local city employment by 5.99%. This result is robust to a series of robustness tests. Heterogeneity results indicate that HSR connection has a significant positive effect on employment in eastern China and large cities, indicating a significant labor inflow from less-developed areas to more-developed areas. Moreover, HSR has a spill-over effect for employment in cities without HSR stations but within a 70 km radius. This spill-over effect is more salient for cities of medium size and in southern China. The mechanism analysis shows that the positive impact of HSR connection on employment mainly stems from the entry of new firms especially those in high-tech industries. This study not only highlights the important role of high-speed rail in promoting labor mobility and employment distribution but also provides strong evidence and insights on how to meet the demand for professionals in closed-loop system innovation and circular economy practices. We investigate how highway connections influenced the entry of polluting firms based on panel data from 257 Chinese prefectures from 1998 to 2012. We also investigate the heterogeneity and influencing channels. We use the generalized difference-in-difference method as a tool in the empirical analysis. We have three main findings. First, highway connections increased the entry of polluting firms by 54.5 percent. Second, the heterogeneity analysis shows that this effect is mainly caused by prefectures on provincial borders, prefectures in central China, and prefectures with more than 1 million residents in urban districts. Third, highway connections reduced the concern about environmental protection by local governments of prefectures on provincial boundaries but increased concern about local governments of prefectures in interior regions. The concern about employment increased regardless of a prefecture's location in a province. These results indicate that less developed regions, i.e., those on provincial boundaries, valued the benefit of job creation for welfare improvement more than the harm of pollution. Hence, they intentionally reduced environmental regulation to induce polluting firms' entry. Green total factor productivity (GTFP) is an important indicator to measure sustainable development, since it considers both the desired and undesired output of the production process. To evaluate whether and how an environmental policy implemented by the central government of China that doubled the emission fee of industrial sulfur dioxide affected polluting firms' GTFP, and to evaluate the heterogeneity of its effects, the generalized difference-in-difference model was applied to firm-level production and pollution data. There are three main findings. First, this policy significantly increased polluting firms' GTFP in pilot provinces, and the magnitude of this impact is equivalent to the gap between the sample median and the 85th percentile of the sample GTFP distribution. Second, this positive impact is mainly caused by polluting firms in eastern pilot provinces and by foreign polluting firms. Third, the mechanism analysis shows that polluting firms in eastern pilot provinces significantly enhanced their innovation in green technology and increased their exports, and they increased the installation of pollution-reducing facilities per unit of output value. In a time varying difference-in-differences setting, we empirically test the impact of high-speed rail (HSR) connections on urban clusters in China. We construct an urban cluster centrality index to reflect changes in the economic positions of counties in clusters. The results show the following: (1) The HSR connection has a positive effect on urban cluster centrality, especially for counties with higher centrality. (2) The heterogeneity effect indicates that western counties centrality has greatly increased their urban cluster centrality compared to eastern areas. (3) Mechanism estimation indicates that the different result to western and eastern counties is due to the high skill labour transfer from eastern to western counties. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
