Abstract

EBEX is a NASA-funded balloon-borne experiment designed to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Observations will be made using 1432 transition edge sensor (TES) bolometric detectors read out with frequency multiplexed SQuIDs. EBEX will observe in three frequency bands centered at 150, 250, and 410 GHz, with 768, 384, and 280 detectors in each band, respectively. This broad frequency coverage is designed to provide valuable information about polarized foreground signals from dust. The polarized sky signals will be modulated with an achromatic half wave plate (AHWP) rotating on a superconducting magnetic bearing (SMB) and analyzed with a fixed wire grid polarizer. EBEX will observe a patch covering ~1% of the sky with 8' resolution, allowing for observation of the angular power spectrum from \ell = 20 to 1000. This will allow EBEX to search for both the primordial B-mode signal predicted by inflation and the anticipated lensing B-mode signal. Calculations to predict EBEX constraints on r using expected noise levels show that, for a likelihood centered around zero and with negligible foregrounds, 99% of the area falls below r = 0.035. This value increases by a factor of 1.6 after a process of foreground subtraction. This estimate does not include systematic uncertainties. An engineering flight was launched in June, 2009, from Ft. Sumner, NM, and the long duration science flight in Antarctica is planned for 2011. Abstract

We present measurements of the electrical and thermal properties of new arrays of bolometeric detectors that were fabricated as part of a program to develop bolometers optimized for the low photon background of the EBEX balloon-borne experiment. An array consists of 140 spider-web transition edge sensor bolometers microfabricated on a 4" diameter silicon wafer. The designed average thermal conductance of bolometers on a proto-type array is 32 pW/K, and measurements are in good agreement with this value. Abstract

We present the design and characterization of the polarbear experiment. polarbear will measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB) on angular scales ranging from the experiment's 3.5′ beam size to several degrees. The experiment utilizes a unique focal plane of 1,274 antenna-coupled, polarization sensitive TES bolometers cooled to 250 milliKelvin. Employing this focal plane along with stringent control over systematic errors, polarbear has the sensitivity to detect the expected small scale B-mode signal due to gravitational lensing and search for the large scale B-mode signal from inflationary gravitational waves. polarbear was assembled for an engineering run in the Inyo Mountains of California in 2010 and was deployed in late 2011 to the Atacama Desert in Chile. An overview of the instrument is presented along with characterization results from observations in Chile. © 2012 SPIE.

Abstract

A new Nb/Al-AlO(sub x)/Nb integrated circuit process with very small critical current spread was developed. It was designed to precisely control critical parameters for large scale integration. Several improvements such as the use of Electron Cyclotron Resonance Plasma Enhanced Chemical Vapor Deposition were made to reduce critical current and other parameter spreads. The new process is reviewed as well as its fabrication.

Abstract

Research was conducted to develope a high-J(sub c) circuit process up to 10 kA/cm2 with 1.5 microns x 1.5 microns junctions showing extremely tight critical current spreads. The high-J(sub c) process was used to fabricate an amplifier circuit. A nonplanarized junction process was used where the via for contact of a wiring layer to a junction can be larger than the junction. The digital amplifier circuit was shown to be operational to speeds of at least 10 GHz with bit-error rates at 5 GHz measured to be approximately 5 x 10 to the -12th power.

Abstract

SrVO3 is used as the buffer material in the fabrication of YBCO/metallic oxide/YBCO trilayers for high temperature superconducting SNS junctions. The junctions are prepared via pulsed layer ablation and subsequently subjected to x-ray diffraction analysis, electrical characterization and atomic force microscopic examination. Results show that the trilayers have very smooth surfaces. Measured data also indicate that SrVO3 has excellent electrical properties.

Abstract

This paper reports the fabrication and properties of small Nb-(a-Si)-Nb-(a-Si)-Nb Josephson tunnel junctions. The smallest junction area is about 0.3μm2. A thin a-Si film deposited by electron beam evaporation was oxidized and used for the tunnel barriers. TEM and XPS investigations indicate that the barrier layers consist of SiOx and Si. The junctions have been used for RF SQUID with an energy resolution of 1.9 × 10-28 J/Hz.

Abstract

Nb3Sn-Pb Josephson tunnel juntions were fabricated using Nb3Sn thin films formed by a simple coevaporation technique, while the tunnel barriers were formed by RF oxidation in an Ar and O2 gas mixture. The I-V characteristics were measured at 4.2K, in which a sharp current rise at the gap voltage of 4.35mV was observed. The ratio of the subgap resistance to the normal one is as high as 6. The Nb3Sn-Pb tunnel junction prepared are of good quality.

Abstract

EBEX (the E and B EXperiment) is a balloon-borne telescope designed to measure the polarisation of the cosmic microwave background radiation. During a two week long duration science flight over Antarctica, EBEX will operate 768, 384 and 280 spider-web transition edge sensor (TES) bolometers at 150, 250 and 410 GHz, respectively. The 10-hour EBEX engineering flight in June 2009 over New Mexico and Arizona provided the first usage of both a large array of TES bolometers and a Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID) based multiplexed readout in a space-like environment. This successful demonstration increases the technology readiness level of these bolometers and the associated readout system for future space missions. A total of 82, 49 and 82 TES detectors were operated during the engineering flight at 150, 250 and 410 GHz. The sensors were read out with a new SQUID-based digital frequency domain multiplexed readout system that was designed to meet the low power consumption and robust autonomous operation requirements presented by a balloon experiment. Here we describe the system and the remote, automated tuning of the bolometers and SQUIDs. We compare results from tuning at float to ground, and discuss bolometer performance during flight

Abstract

The E and B Experiment, EBEX, is a Cosmic Microwave Background polarization experiment designed to detector set upper limits on the signature of primordial gravity waves. Primordial gravity waves are predicted to beproduced by inflation, and a measurement of the power spectrum of these gravity waves is a measurement ofthe energy scale of inflation. EBEX has sufficient sensitivity to detect or set an upper limit at 95% confidenceon the energy scale of inflation of < 1.4 × 1016 GeV. This article reviews our strategy for achieving our sciencegoals and discusses the implementation of the instrument.

Abstract

EBEX is a NASA-funded balloon-borne experiment designed to measure the polarization of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). Observations will be made using 1432 transition edge sensor (TES) bolometric detectors read out with frequency multiplexed SQuIDs. EBEX will observe in three frequency bands centered at 150, 250, and 410 GHz, with 768, 384, and 280 detectors in each band, respectively. This broad frequency coverage is designed to provide valuable information about polarized foreground signals from dust. The polarized sky signals will be modulated with an achromatic half wave plate (AHWP) rotating on a superconducting magnetic bearing (SMB) and analyzed with a fixed wire grid polarizer. EBEX will observe a patch covering ~1% of the sky with 8' resolution, allowing for observation of the angular power spectrum from l = 20 to 1000. This will allow EBEX to search for both the primordial B-mode signal predicted by inflation and the anticipated lensing B-mode signal. Calculations to predict EBEX constraints on r using expected noise levels show that, for a likelihood centered around zero and with negligible foregrounds, 99% of the area falls below r = 0.035. This value increases by a factor of 1.6 after a process of foreground subtraction. This estimate does not include systematic uncertainties. An engineering flight was launched in June, 2009, from Ft. Sumner, NM, and the long duration science flight in Antarctica is planned for 2011. These proceedings describe the EBEX instrument and the North American engineering flight.
