Immersion minor is an important variant of graph minor, defined through an injective mapping from vertices in a smaller graph $H$ to vertices in a larger graph $G$ where adjacent elements of the former are connected in the latter by edge-disjoint paths. Here, we consider the immersion problem in the emerging field of hypergraphs. We first define hypergraph immersion by extending the injective mapping to hypergraphs. We then prove that finding a hypergraph immersion is fixed-parameter tractable, namely, there exists an $O(N^6)$ polynomial-time algorithm to determine whether a fixed hypergraph $H$ can be immersed in a hypergraph $G$ with $N$ vertices. Additionally, we present the dual hypergraph immersion problem and provide further characteristics of the algorithmic complexity.

Quantum networks (QNs) promise to enhance the performance of various quantum technologies in the near future by distributing entangled states over long distances. The first step towards this is to develop novel entanglement measures that are both informative and computationally tractable at large scales. While numerous such entanglement measures exist for discrete-variable (DV) systems, a comprehensive exploration for experimentally preferred continuous-variable (CV) systems is lacking. Here, we introduce a class of CV entanglement measures, among which we identify a non-convex entanglement monotone -- the ratio negativity, which possesses a simple, scalable form for characterizing the optimal entanglement swapping of pure Gaussian states. This characterization opens avenues for leveraging statistical physics tools to analyze swapping-protocol-based CV QNs.

Multipartite entanglement, linking multiple nodes simultaneously, is a higher-order correlation that offers advantages over pairwise connections in quantum networks (QNs). Creating reliable, large-scale multipartite entanglement requires entanglement routing, a process that combines local, short-distance connections into a long-distance connection, which can be considered as a transformation of network topology. Here, we address the question of whether a QN can be topologically transformed into another via entanglement routing. Our key result is an exact mapping from multipartite entanglement routing to Nash-Williams's graph immersion problem, extended to hypergraphs. This generalized hypergraph immersion problem introduces a partial order between QN topologies, permitting certain topological transformations while precluding others, offering discerning insights into the design and manipulation of higher-order network topologies in QNs., Comment: 11 pages, 6 figures, 1 table

In a quantum communication network, links represent entanglement between qubits located at different nodes. Even if two nodes are not directly linked by shared entanglement, communication channels can be established between them via quantum routing protocols. However, in contrast to classical communication networks, each communication event removes all participating links along the communication path, disrupting the quantum network. Here, we propose a simple model, where randomly selected pairs of nodes communicate through shortest paths. Each time such a path is used, all participating links are eliminated, leading to a correlated percolation process that we call ``path percolation.'' We study path percolation both numerically and analytically and present the phase diagram of the steady states as a function of the rate at which new links are being added to the quantum communication network. As a key result, the steady state is found to be independent from the initial network topology when new link are added randomly between disconnected components. Building large-scale quantum communication networks has its unique challenges. Here, we demonstrate that a network-wide synergistic usage of quantum memories distributed in a quantum communication network offers a fundamental advantage. We first map the problem of quantum communication with local usage of memories into a classical continuum percolation model. Then, we show that this mapping can be improved through a cooperation of entanglement distillation and relay protocols via remote access to distributed memories. This improved mapping, which we term $\alpha$-percolation, can be formulated in terms of graph-merging rules, analogous to the decimation rules of the renormalization group treatment of disordered quantum magnets. These rules can be performed in any order, yielding the same optimal result, which is characterized by the emergence of a ``positive feedback'' mechanism and the formation of spatially disconnected ``hopping'' communication components -- both marking significant improvements in quantum network connectivity., Comment: 6 pages, 3 figures

Quantum networks (QNs) exhibit stronger connectivity than predicted by classical percolation, yet the origin of this phenomenon remains unexplored. Here, we apply a statistical physics model -- concurrence percolation -- to uncover the origin of stronger connectivity on hierarchical scale-free networks, the ($U,V$) flowers. These networks allow full analytical control over path connectivity through two adjustable path-length parameters, $U \leq V$. This precise control enables us to determine critical exponents well beyond current simulation limits, revealing that classical and concurrence percolations, while both satisfying the hyperscaling relation, fall into distinct universality classes. This distinction arises from how they "superpose" parallel, non-shortest path contributions into overall connectivity. Concurrence percolation, unlike its classical counterpart, is sensitive to non-shortest paths and shows higher resilience to detours as these paths lengthen. This enhanced resilience is also observed in real-world hierarchical, scale-free Internet networks. Although the origin of the fat-tail characteristic of the degree distribution in complex networks has been extensively researched, the underlying cause of the degree distribution characteristic across the complete range of degrees remains obscure. Here, we propose an evolution model that incorporates only two factors: the node's weight, reflecting its innate attractiveness (nature), and the node's degree, reflecting the external influences (nurture). The proposed model provides a good fit for degree distributions and degree ratio distributions of numerous real-world networks and reproduces their evolution processes. Our results indicate that the nurture factor plays a dominant role in the evolution of social networks. In contrast, the nature factor plays a dominant role in the evolution of non-social networks, suggesting that whether nodes are people determines the dominant factor influencing the evolution of real-world networks., Comment: 8pages, 4 figures

Quantum networks have experienced rapid advancements in both theoretical and experimental domains over the last decade, making it increasingly important to understand their large-scale features from the viewpoint of statistical physics. This review paper discusses a fundamental question: how can entanglement be effectively and indirectly (e.g., through intermediate nodes) distributed between distant nodes in an imperfect quantum network, where the connections are only partially entangled and subject to quantum noise? We survey recent studies addressing this issue by drawing exact or approximate mappings to percolation theory, a branch of statistical physics centered on network connectivity. Notably, we show that the classical percolation frameworks do not uniquely define the network's indirect connectivity. This realization leads to the emergence of an alternative theory called ``concurrence percolation,'' which uncovers a previously unrecognized quantum advantage that emerges at large scales, suggesting that quantum networks are more resilient than initially assumed within classical percolation contexts, offering refreshing insights into future quantum network design.

References, the mechanism scientists rely on to signal previous knowledge, lately have turned into widely used and misused measures of scientific impact. Yet, when a discovery becomes common knowledge, citations suffer from obliteration by incorporation. This leads to the concept of hidden citation, representing a clear textual credit to a discovery without a reference to the publication embodying it. Here, we rely on unsupervised interpretable machine learning applied to the full text of each paper to systematically identify hidden citations. We find that for influential discoveries hidden citations outnumber citation counts, emerging regardless of publishing venue and discipline. We show that the prevalence of hidden citations is not driven by citation counts, but rather by the degree of the discourse on the topic within the text of the manuscripts, indicating that the more discussed is a discovery, the less visible it is to standard bibliometric analysis. Hidden citations indicate that bibliometric measures offer a limited perspective on quantifying the true impact of a discovery, raising the need to extract knowledge from the full text of the scientific corpus., Comment: 71 pages (main + SI)

Complex networks across various fields are often considered to be scale free -- a statistical property usually solely characterized by a power-law distribution of the nodes' degree $k$. However, this characterization is incomplete. In real-world networks, the distribution of the degree-degree distance $\eta$, a simple link-based metric of network connectivity similar to $k$, appears to exhibit a stronger power-law distribution than $k$. While offering an alternative characterization of scale-freeness, the discovery of $\eta$ raises a fundamental question: do the power laws of $k$ and $\eta$ represent the same scale-freeness? To address this question, here we investigate the exact asymptotic {relationship} between the distributions of $k$ and $\eta$, proving that every network with a power-law distribution of $k$ also has a power-law distribution of $\eta$, but \emph{not} vice versa. This prompts us to introduce two network models as counterexamples that have a power-law distribution of $\eta$ but not $k$, constructed using the preferential attachment and fitness mechanisms, respectively. Both models show promising accuracy by fitting only one model parameter each when modeling real-world networks. Our findings suggest that $\eta$ is a more suitable indicator of scale-freeness and can provide a deeper understanding of the universality and underlying mechanisms of scale-free networks.

One of the most effective strategies to mitigate the global spreading of a pandemic (e.g., COVID-19) is to shut down international airports. From a network theory perspective, this is since international airports and flights, essentially playing the roles of bridge nodes and bridge links between countries as individual communities, dominate the epidemic spreading characteristics in the whole multi-community system. Among all epidemic characteristics, the peak fraction of infected, $I_{\max}$, is a decisive factor in evaluating an epidemic strategy given limited capacity of medical resources, but is seldom considered in multi-community models. In this paper, we study a general two-community system interconnected by a fraction $r$ of bridge nodes and its dynamic properties, especially $I_{\max}$, under the evolution of the Susceptible-Infected-Recovered (SIR) model. Comparing the characteristic time scales of different parts of the system allows us to analytically derive the asymptotic behavior of $I_{\max}$ with $r$, as $r\rightarrow 0$, which follows different power-law relations in each regime of the phase diagram. We also detect crossovers when $I_{\max}$ changes from one power law to another, crossing different power-law regimes as driven by $r$. Constructing precise micro-nano metal patterns on complex three-dimensional (3D) plastic parts allows the fabrication of functional devices for advanced applications. However, this patterning is currently expensive and requires complex processes with long manufacturing lead time. The present work demonstrates a process for the fabrication of micro-nano 3D metal-plastic composite structures with arbitrarily complex shapes. In this approach, a light-cured resin is modified to prepare an active precursor capable of allowing subsequent electroless plating (ELP). A multi-material digital light processing 3D printer was newly developed to enable the fabrication of parts containing regions made of either standard resin or active precursor resin nested within each other. Selective 3D ELP processing of such parts provided various metal-plastic composite parts having complicated hollow micro-nano structures with specific topological relationships on a size scale as small as 40 um. Using this technique, 3D metal topologies that cannot be manufactured by traditional methods are possible, and metal patterns can be produced inside plastic parts as a means of further miniaturizing electronic devices. The proposed method can also generate metal coatings exhibiting improved adhesion of metal to plastic substrate. Based on this technique, several sensors composed of different functional nonmetallic materials and specific metal patterns were designed and fabricated. The present results demonstrate the viability of the proposed method and suggest potential applications in the fields of smart 3D micro-nano electronics, 3D wearable devices, micro/nano-sensors, and health care.

The performance of distributing entanglement between two distant nodes in a large-scale quantum network (QN) of partially entangled bipartite pure states is generally benchmarked against the classical entanglement percolation (CEP) scheme. Improvements beyond CEP were only achieved by nonscalable strategies for restricted QN topologies. This paper explores and amplifies a new and more effective mapping of a QN, referred to as concurrence percolation theory (ConPT), that suggests using deterministic rather than probabilistic protocols for scalably improving on CEP across arbitrary QN topologies. More precisely, we implement ConPT via a deterministic entanglement transmission (DET) scheme that is fully analogous to resistor network analysis, with the corresponding series and parallel rules represented by deterministic entanglement swapping and concentration protocols, respectively. The main contribution of this paper is to establish a powerful mathematical framework, which is applicable to arbitrary d-dimensional information carriers (qudits), that provides different natural optimality metrics in terms of generalized k-concurrences (a family of fundamental entanglement measures) for different QN topology. In particular, we conclude that the introduced DET scheme (a) is optimal over the well-known nested repeater protocol for distilling entanglement from partially entangled qubits and (b) leads to higher success probabilities of obtaining a maximally entangled state than using CEP. Establishing long-distance quantum entanglement, i.e., entanglement transmission, in quantum networks (QN) is a key and timely challenge for developing efficient quantum communication. Traditional comprehension based on classical percolation assumes a necessary condition for successful entanglement transmission between any two infinitely distant nodes: they must be connected by at least a path of perfectly entangled states (singlets). Here, we relax this condition by explicitly showing that one can focus not on optimally converting singlets but on establishing concurrence -- a key measure of bipartite entanglement. We thereby introduce a new statistical theory, concurrence percolation theory (ConPT), remotely analogous to classical percolation but fundamentally different, built by generalizing bond percolation in terms of "sponge-crossing" paths instead of clusters. Inspired by resistance network analysis, we determine the path connectivity by series/parallel rules and approximate higher-order rules via star-mesh transforms. Interestingly, we find that the entanglement transmission threshold predicted by ConPT is lower than the known classical-percolation-based results and is readily achievable on any series-parallel networks such as the Bethe lattice. ConPT promotes our understanding of how well quantum communication can be further systematically improved versus classical statistical predictions under the limitation of QN locality -- a "quantum advantage" that is more general and efficient than expected. The Keldysh formalism is capable of describing driven-dissipative dynamics of open quantum systems as nonunitary effective field theories that are not necessarily thermodynamical, thus often exhibiting new physics. Here, we introduce a general Keldysh action that maximally obeys Weinbergian constraints, including locality, Poincar\'e invariance, and two "$CPT$" constraints: complete positivity and trace preserving as well as charge, parity, and time reversal symmetry. We find that the perturbative Lindblad term responsible for driven-dissipative dynamics introduced therein has the natural form of a double-trace deformation $\mathcal{O}^2$, which, in the large $N$ limit, possibly leads to a new nonthermal conformal fixed point. This fixed point is IR when $\Deltad/2$ given $d$ the dimensions of spacetime and $\Delta$ the scaling dimension of $\mathcal{O}$. Such a UV fixed point being not forbidden by Weinbergian constraints may suggest its existence and even completion of itself, in contrast to the common sense that dissipation effects are always IR relevant. This observation implies that driven-dissipative dynamics is much richer than thermodynamics, differing in not only its noncompliance with thermodynamic symmetry (e.g., the fluctuation-dissipation relation) but its UV/IR relevance as well. Chaotic time series forecasting has been far less understood despite its tremendous potential in theory and real-world applications. Traditional statistical/ML methods are inefficient to capture chaos in nonlinear dynamical systems, especially when the time difference $\Delta t$ between consecutive steps is so large that a trivial, ergodic local minimum would most likely be reached instead. Here, we introduce a new long-short-term-memory (LSTM)-based recurrent architecture by tensorizing the cell-state-to-state propagation therein, keeping the long-term memory feature of LSTM while simultaneously enhancing the learning of short-term nonlinear complexity. We stress that the global minima of chaos can be most efficiently reached by tensorization where all nonlinear terms, up to some polynomial order, are treated explicitly and weighted equally. The efficiency and generality of our architecture are systematically tested and confirmed by theoretical analysis and experimental results. In our design, we have explicitly used two different many-body entanglement structures---matrix product states (MPS) and the multiscale entanglement renormalization ansatz (MERA)---as physics-inspired tensor decomposition techniques, from which we find that MERA generally performs better than MPS, hence conjecturing that the learnability of chaos is determined not only by the number of free parameters but also the tensor complexity---recognized as how entanglement entropy scales with varying matricization of the tensor., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures
