Constructing metal-semiconductor interfaces by loading metal atoms onto two-dimensional material to build atomically dispersed single-atom catalysts (SACs) has emerged as a new frontier for improving atom utilization and designing multifunctional electrocatalysts. Nowadays, studies on black phosphorus nanosheets in electrocatalysis have received much attention and the successful preparation of metal nanoparticle/black phosphorus (BP) hybrid electrocatalysts indicates BP nanosheets can serve as a potential support platform for SACs. Herein, by using large-scale ab initio calculations, we explored a large composition space of SACs with transition metal atoms supported on BP monolayer (M-BP) and built a comprehensive picture of activity trend, stability, and electronic origin towards oxygen reduction and evolution reaction (ORR and OER) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). The results show that the catalytic activity can be widely tuned by reasonable regulation of metal atoms. Ni-, Pd-, and Pt-BP could effectively balance the binding strength of the target intermediates, thus achieving efficient bifunctional activity for OER and ORR. Favorable bifunctional catalytic performance for OER and HER can be realized on Rh-BP. Especially, Pt-BP exhibits promising trifunctional activity towards OER, ORR, and HER. Multiple-level corrections among overpotential, Gibbs free energy, orbital population, and d-band center reveal that the trend and origin of catalytic activity are intrinsically determined by the d-band center of metal sites. The thermodynamic and dynamic stability simulations demonstrate that the active metal centers are firmly anchored on BP substrate with intact M-P bonds. From spintronics to data storage technology, two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic materials show great promise for various applications. This work reports a series of stable ferromagnetic transition metal boride FenB2+2n (n = 1, 2), where robust long-range ferromagnetic exchange coupling and large perpendicular magnetic anisotropy energy (MAE) allow the ferromagnetic transition temperature (Tc) of the FenB2+2n monolayer to reach above room temperature. The metallic FenB2+2n exhibits n- and p-type Dirac transport in both spin channels with a high Fermi velocity. Furthermore, the application of biaxial compressive strain and electron doping can greatly increase the ferromagnetic coupling and MAE of FeB4 monolayers. On this basis, the FeB2C2 alloy with a high concentration of carbon substitution has been designed, which allows the nonvolatile integration of in-plane compressive strain and electron doping. As expected, this substitution doping resulted in a significant increase in the Tc and MAE of the system. Our findings provide perspectives for the study of 2D magnetic materials. Co-pyrolysis technology is considered to be one of the most promising methods for the sustainable utilization of biomass wastes, as it can realize waste reduction and convert wastes into high-value-added products with little impact on the environment. The evaluation of thermal characteristics and product properties is necessary for understanding this technique. In this paper, thermal characteristics and kinetic and thermodynamic analysis during the co-pyrolysis of mushroom residue (MR) with pine sawdust (PS) or wheat straw (WS) were investigated in a TGA. The carbon structure and surface textures of co-pyrolytic char were explored using Raman spectroscopy and a scanning electron microscope. As the PS or WS mass ratio increased, the devolatilization index increased obviously, indicating that volatile release was promoted and concentrated. Weak interactions were observed between 250 and 400 °C during the co-pyrolysis process, which primarily affected the mass transfer, resulting in a change in the thermal decomposition temperatures and rates. The interactions had no prominent influence on the volatiles' yields. The non-additive performance of average activation energies for the blends was observed due to the interactions, and the lowest average activation energy was obtained when the PS or WS mass ratio was 50%. The lower average pre-exponential factor of the blends indicated the reduced complicacy of the pyrolysis reaction. The relatively small deviation between the activation energy and enthalpy change (4.94–5.18 kJ·mol−1) signified the energy sensitivity of product formation. PS promoted the formation of small aromatic rings (<6 fused rings) in co-pyrolytic chars, whereas WS favored the production of larger rings (≥6 fused rings). The surface textures of the co-pyrolytic chars became porous, and the greater fractal dimensions of the surface morphology for the co-pyrolytic chars indicated that the char surface became irregular and rough. Two-dimensional (2D) ferromagnetic materials with Curie temperature (Tc) above room temperature have great potential ranging from spintronics to information processing and storage. Here, we computationally design a series of 1T′α-VXY (X = S, Se, Te; Y = Cl, Br, I) monolayers with the X and Y atoms arranged alternately in the 2D plane. VXY monolayers are ferromagnetic semiconductors with Tc much higher than room temperature. Furthermore, the symmetry breaking of VXY bilayers leads to sliding ferroelectricity with large reversible out-of-plane electric polarization and moderate interlayer sliding barriers. We further show that half-metal-to-semiconductor nonvolatile field-effect switching can be achieved in multiferroic van der Waals heterostructures composed of VXY and In2S3 ferroelectric substrates due to the synergistic effect between the polarization field-induced band edge shifting and the selective charge transfer at the interface. These findings reveal a promising role of 2D Janus 1T′α-VXY in spintronics, ferroelectric, and multiferroic device applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Exceptional points are complex branching singularities of non-Hermitian bands that have lately attracted considerable interest, particularly in non-Hermitian photonics. In this article, we review some recent developments in non-Hermitian photonic platforms such as waveguides, photonic crystals, Fabry–Pérot resonators, and plasmonic systems and suggest how optical non-linearities and exceptional bound states can further inspire the development of non-Hermitian photonics in the near future.
