We analysed the nuclear region of all 56 early-type galaxies from the DIVING$^\mathrm{3D}$ Project, which is a statistically complete sample of objects that contains all 170 galaxies of the Southern Hemisphere with B < 12.0 mag and galactic latitude |b| < 15$^{\circ}$. Observations were performed with the Integral Field Unit of the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph. Emission lines were detected in the nucleus of 86$\pm$5% of the objects. Diagnostic diagrams were used to classify 52$\pm$7% of the objects as LINERs or Seyferts, while the other 34$\pm$6% galaxies without H$\beta$ or [O III] lines in their spectra were classified as weak emission line objects. Transition Objects are not seen in the sample, possibly because the seeing-limited data cubes of the objects allow one to isolate the nuclei of the galaxies from their circumnuclear regions, avoiding contamination from H II regions. A broad line region is seen in 29$\pm$6% of the galaxies. Of the 48 galaxies with emission-line nuclei, 41 have signs of AGNs. Some objects have also indications of shocks in their nuclei. Lenticular galaxies are more likely to have emission lines than ellipticals. Also, more luminous objects have higher [N II]/H$\alpha$ ratios, which may be associated with the mass-metalicity relation of galaxies. A direct comparison of our results with the Palomar Survey indicates that the detection rates of emission lines and also of type 1 AGNs are higher in the DIVING$^\mathrm{3D}$ objects. The central regions of galaxies harbouring active galactic nuclei (AGNs) can be quite complex, especially at high activity, presenting, besides variability, a variety of phenomena related, e.g. to ionization/excitation mechanisms. A detailed study is necessary in order to understand better those objects. For that reason, we performed a multiwavelength analysis of the nuclear region of the nearby Seyfert galaxy NGC 7314, using an optical data cube obtained with the Integral Field Unit from the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph, together with Hubble Space Telescope images, X-ray data from the XMM-Newton and the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array and radio data from Atacama Large Millimeter/Submillimeter Array. The goals were to study the nuclear and circumnuclear emission, the emission of the AGN and the gas kinematics. The optical spectrum shows the emission of a Seyfert nucleus, with broad components in the H$\alpha$ and H$\beta$ emission lines, characterising a type 1 AGN, with a spectrum rich in coronal emission lines. The spatial morphology of the [OIII]$\lambda$5007 suggests the presence of an ionization cone, west of the nucleus, meanwhile the east cone seems to be obscured by dust. An extended [FeVII]$\lambda$6087 emission was also detected, which could be possibly explained by a scenario involving photoionization+shocks mechanisms. X-rays analyses showed that there are variations in the flux; however, we did not detect any variations in the column density along the line of sight. This work presents the first results of the Deep IFS View of Nuclei of Galaxies (DIVING$^\mathrm{3D}$) survey. We analysed the nuclear emission-line spectra of a sub-sample we call mini-DIVING$^\mathrm{3D}$, which includes all Southern galaxies with B < 11.2 and |b| > 15 degrees. We verified that $23\% \pm 4\%$ of the galaxies show nuclear emission-line properties characteristic of Low Ionization Nuclear Emission-Line Regions (LINERs). Diagnostic diagram analysis reveals an apparent dichotomy, not detected in previous studies, between objects classified as H II regions and as LINERs or Seyferts, with very few galaxies classified as transition objects. A possible explanation for this result is that at least part of the transition objects are composite systems, with a central LINER contaminated by the emission from circumnuclear H II regions. The higher spatial resolution of the DIVING$^\mathrm{3D}$ survey, in comparison with previous studies, allowed us to isolate the nuclear emission from circumnuclear contaminations, reducing the number of transition objects. We also propose an alternative scenario, in which the emission-line spectra of some transition objects are the result of shock heating by central outflows, together with photoionization by young stars. Clear evidence of active galactic nuclei (AGNs), in the optical and X-ray spectral bands, were detected in 69$\%$ of the LINERs in the mini-DIVING$^\mathrm{3D}$ sample. We present the Deep Integral Field Spectrograph View of Nuclei of Galaxies (DIVING$^{3D}$) survey, a seeing-limited optical 3D spectroscopy study of the central regions of all 170 galaxies in the Southern hemisphere with B < 12.0 and |b| > 15 degrees. Most of the observations were taken with the Integral Field Unit of the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph, at the Gemini South telescope, but some are also being taken with the Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope (SOAR) Integral Field Spectrograph. The DIVING$^{3D}$ survey was designed for the study of nuclear emission-line properties, circumnuclear (within scales of hundreds of pc) emission-line properties, stellar and gas kinematics and stellar archaeology. The detailed study of nuclear regions of galaxies is important because it can help understanding the active galactic nucleus (AGN) feedback mechanisms, the connections between the nuclei and their host galaxies, and ultimately the galaxy formation processes. We present the analysis of an optical data cube of the central region of the galaxy NGC 2442, obtained with the integral field unit (IFU) of the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS). We also performed a multiwavelength analysis, with Chandra data, XMM--Newton and NuSTAR spectra, and Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images. The analysis revealed that the nuclear emission is consistent with a Low Ionization Nuclear Emission-line Region (LINER) associated with a highly obscured compact hard X-ray source, indicating a Compton-thick AGN. The HST image in the F658N filter (H$\alpha$) reveals an arched structure corresponding to the walls of the ionization cone of the AGN. The gas kinematic pattern and the high gas velocity dispersion values in the same region of the ionization cone suggest an outflow emission. The stellar archaeology results indicate the presence of only old stellar populations ($\sim$ 10 Gyr), with high metallicity (z = 0.02 and 0.05), and the absence of recent star formation in the central region of NGC 2442, which is possibly a consequence of the AGN feedback, associated with the detected outflow, shutting off star formation. NGC 2442 is a late-type galaxy similar to the Milky Way, and comparisons show that the main difference between them is the presence of a low-luminosity AGN., Comment: 13 pages, 13 figures, 1 table, published in MNRAS

We present the analysis of an optical data cube of the central region of NGC 1448, obtained with the Multi Unit Spectroscopic Explorer (MUSE). Chandra X-ray data indicate that the active galactic nucleus (AGN) is not located at the apparent stellar nucleus of the galaxy, but at a projected distance of $1.75$ $\pm$ $0.22$ arcsec ($139 \pm 17$ pc). This is probably caused by the high interstellar extinction in the surroundings of the AGN, which corresponds to the true nucleus of the galaxy, as also proposed by previous studies. The morphology and classification of the optical line-emitting regions indicate two ionization cones, around an axis with a position angle of $PA_{cones}$ = -50{\deg} $\pm$ 7{\deg}, with emission-line spectra characteristic of Seyfert galaxies. The stellar and gas kinematics are consistent with a stellar and gas rotating disc around the nucleus, with a velocity amplitude of 125 km s$^{-1}$. Two probable outflows from the AGN were detected along the region of the two ionization cones. The AGN position does not coincide with the brightest line-emitting region at the centre of NGC 1448. That may be a consequence of the high obscuration from the AGN towards the observer (the AGN is actually Compton thick), mostly caused by a nearly edge-on torus. An additional hypothesis is that the AGN reduced its luminosity, during the last 440 yr, to nearly half of the value in the past. We present a study of the central 200 pc of the galaxy NGC 6951, SAB(rs)bc, an active twin of the Milky Way, at a distance of 24 Mpc. Its nucleus has been observed in the optical with the GMOS-IFU, showing an outflow, and with the HST/ACS, revealing two extended structures with similar orientation, suggesting the presence of a collimating and/or obscuring structure. In order to ascertain this hypothesis, adaptive optics assisted NIR integral field spectroscopic observations were obtained with the NIFS spectrograph in the Gemini North telescope. We detected a compact structure of H$_2$ molecular gas, interpreted as a nearly edge-on disc with diameter of $\sim$47 pc, PA=124$\deg$ and velocity range from -40 to +40 km s$^{-1}$. This disc is misaligned by 32$\deg$ with respect to the radio jet and the ionization cones seen in the optical. There are two regions of turbulent gas, with position angles similar to the jet/cones, seen both in molecular and ionized phases; these regions are connected to the edges of the molecular disc and coincide with a high ratio of [N II]/H$\alpha$=5, suggesting that these regions are shock excited, partially ionized or both. We explain these structures as a consequence of a "digging process" that the jet inflicts on the disc, ejecting the molecular gas towards the ionization cones. The dynamical mass within 17 pc is estimated as $6.3\times10^{6}$$M_{\odot}$. We report near-infrared integral field spectroscopic observations of the active galactic nucleus NGC 4151 with archive data from the NIFS-Gemini North Telescope. We have selected best-seeing observations ($\lesssim$0.3 arcsec) that, allied to our methodology of image processing techniques, show structures with spatial resolution comparable to those of the HST. The intricate outflow of NGC 4151 is revisited in light of the results found for NGC 1068, in a previous work, and a very similar dynamic is found: the low-velocity [Fe II] emission depicts the glowing walls of an hourglass structure, while the high-velocity gas fills its volume. From this finding, we show that the misalignment between the jet and the NLR is not a projection effect, as previously thought. A molecular outflow is detected for the first time in this galaxy and, just like in NGC 1068, the transition between the molecular and the ionized gas phases comes from the fragmentation of molecular cavity walls into bullets of ionized gas exposed to the central source. Furthermore, it is suggestive that the same geometrical dichotomy between the cones seen in NGC 1068 is found here, with one side, where the cavity is disrupted by the AGN, being more extended than the other. Finally, a new spatial correlation between the high-velocity [Fe II] and the soft X-ray emission of [Ne IX] is found, which is unexpected given the difference between their ionization potentials., Comment: 29 pages, 24 figures

In this work, we continue the study of the central region of NGC 613 by da Silva et al. (2020), by analysing the stellar and gas kinematics and the stellar archaeology in optical and near-infrared data cubes. The high spatial resolution of the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph (GMOS) data cube allowed the detection, using spectral synthesis methods, of an inner circumnuclear ring, with a radius of $\sim$ 1 arcsec, composed of $\sim$ 10$^9$-yr stellar populations. Such a ring is located between the nucleus and the circumnuclear ring composed by H II regions detected in previous works. Besides that, there is a stellar rotation around the nucleus and the rings follow the same direction of rotation with different velocities. The intensity-weighted average stellar velocity dispersion at the centre is 92 $\pm$ 3 km s$^{-1}$. Three distinct gas outflow components were detected. The direction of the outflow observed with the H $\alpha$ emission line is compatible with the direction of the previously observed radio jet. The direction of one of the outflows detected in the [O III]$\lambda$5007 emission coincides with the axis of the ionization cone. There is no difference regarding the stellar populations and the stellar kinematics along the double stellar emission, probably separated by a dust lane as mentioned in Paper I, confirming that they are part of the same structure., Comment: 17 pages, 17 figures

We present a set of treatment techniques for GMOS/IFU data cubes, including: correction of the differential atmospheric refraction; Butterworth spatial filtering, to remove high spatial-frequency noise; instrumental fingerprint removal; Richardson-Lucy deconvolution, to improve the spatial resolution of the observations. A comparison with HST images shows that the treatment techniques preserve the morphology of the spatial structures in the data cubes, without introducing distortions or ghost features. The treatment procedure applied to the data cube of the central region of the late-type galaxy NGC 2835 allowed the detection of a nuclear emitting region with emission-line ratios indicating a probable LINER, although the classifications of Transition Object or Seyfert galaxy cannot be discarded. Such a detection was not possible without the data treatment. This shows that the benefits provided by this treatment procedure are not merely cosmetic, but actually affect the quality of different types of analyses, like the determination of the fraction of galaxies, of different morphological types, with a central Seyfert/LINER/Transition object emission., Comment: 18 pages, 21 figures, 1 table, published in MNRAS

We analyze optical data cubes of the nuclear regions of two late-type galaxies, NGC 908 and NGC 1187, obtained with the Integral Field Unit of the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph. Both data cubes show stellar structures consistent with double nuclei. The morphology of the line-emitting areas in the central region of NGC 1187 is also of a double nucleus, while the spatial morphology of the line-emitting areas in the data cube of NGC 908 is consistent with a circumnuclear asymmetric ring. The emission-line ratios of the nuclear spectra (and, actually, along the entire field of view) of both galaxies are characteristic of H II regions. In particular, based on its emission-line properties, the circumnuclear ring in NGC 908 can be identified as a star-forming ring. The observed spatial morphology of the stellar emission and also the differences in the properties of the stellar populations detected in the stellar nuclei of NGC 908 suggest that the most likely scenario to explain the double stellar nucleus in this object involves a minor merger, probably with a high mass ratio. On the other hand, considering the similar properties of the stellar populations in the stellar nuclei of NGC 1187, together with the stellar and gas kinematic properties, we conclude that the most likely scenario to explain the double stellar and gas nucleus in this galaxy involves the stellar and gas kinematics, in the form of a circular nuclear disk subject to perturbations., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures, 2 tables, published in ApJ

NGC 6744 is the nearest and brightest south-hemisphere galaxy with a morphological type similar to that of the Milky Way. Using data obtained with the Integral Field Unit of the Gemini South Multi-Object Spectrograph, we found that this galaxy has a nucleus with LINER (Low Ionization Nuclear Emission Line Region) surrounded by three line emitting regions. The analysis of the Hubble Space Telescope archival images revealed that the nucleus is associated with a blue compact source, probably corresponding to the active galactic nucleus (AGN). The circumnuclear emission seems to be part of the extended narrow line region of the AGN. One of these regions, located $\sim$1" southeast of the nucleus, seems to be associated with the ionization cone of the AGN. The other two regions are located $\sim$1" south and $\sim$0.6" northeast of the nucleus and are not aligned with the gaseous rotating disk. Spectral synthesis shows evidence that this galaxy may have gone through a merger about one billion years ago. On the basis of the kinematic behavior, we found a gaseous rotating disk, not co-aligned with the stellar disk. Given the relative degree of ionization and luminosities of the nuclear and circumnuclear regions, we suggest that the AGN was more luminous in the past and that the current circumnuclear emissions are echoes of that phase., Comment: 16 pages, 11 figures, 3 tables, published in ApJ

NGC 7582 is an SB(s)ab galaxy which displays evidences of simultaneous nuclear activity and star formation in its centre. Previous optical observations revealed, besides the H II regions, an ionization cone and a gas disc in its central part. Hubble Space Telescope (HST) images in both optical and infrared bands show the active galactic nuclei (AGNs) and a few compact structures that are possibly associated with young stellar clusters. In order to study in detail both the AGN and evidence for star formation, we analyse optical (Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph) and near-infrared (Spectrograph for Integral Field Observations in the Near Infrared) archival data cubes. We detected five nebulae with strong He II$\lambda$4686 emission in the same region where an outflow is detected in the [O III]$\lambda$5007 kinematic map. We interpreted this result as clouds that are exposed to high-energy photons emerging from the AGN throughout the ionization cone. We also detected Wolf$-$Rayet features which are related to emission of one of the compact clusters seen in the \textit{HST} image. Broad H$\alpha$ and Br$\gamma$ components are detected at the position of the nucleus. [Fe II]$\lambda$1.644 $\mu$m, H$_2\lambda$2.122 $\mu$m and Br$\gamma$ flux maps show two blobs, one north and the other south from the nucleus, that seem to be associated with five previously detected mid-infrared sources. Two of the five He II nebulae are partially ionized by photons from starbursts. However, we conclude that the main source of excitation of these blobs is the AGN jet/disc. NGC 4258 is an SABbc Seyfert galaxy, located at a distance of $7.2 \pm 0.3$ Mpc. This object is well known by its nearly edge-on molecular nuclear disc, located between 0.16 and 0.28 pc from the nucleus, whose H$_2$O maser emission allows a very precise measurement of the central supermassive black hole mass ($M_{\bullet}(maser) = 3.78 \pm 0.01 \times 10^7$ Mo). We analyse the emission line properties and the stellar kinematics in a data cube of the central region of NGC 4258, obtained, in the K band, with the Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph, at the Gemini-north telescope. The nuclear spectrum, after the starlight subtraction, shows only the H$_2 \lambda 2.1218$ $\mu$m and Br$\gamma$ emission lines, the latter having a broad component with FWHM$_{Br\gamma}(broad) = 1600 \pm 29$ km s$^{-1}$. The spatial morphology and kinematics of the H$_2 \lambda 2.1218$ $\mu$m line are consistent with a rotating molecular disc around the supermassive black hole, with an upper limit for its diameter of 15.7 pc. The inner radio jet in this object is, in projection, almost perpendicular to the H$_2$ emitting disc detected in this work, and also to the H$_2$O maser emitting disc. The main features of the maps of the stellar kinematic parameters are well reproduced by a model of a thin rotating stellar circular disc. The supermassive black hole mass provided by this dynamical modelling ($M_{\bullet}(disc) = 2.8 \pm 1.0 \times 10^7$ Mo) is compatible, at 1$\sigma$ level, with the precise measurement resulting from the H$_2$O maser emission., Comment: 15 pages, 10 figures, 1 table, published in MNRAS

We analysed the centre of NGC 1566, which hosts a well-studied active galactic nucleus (AGN), known for its variability. With the aid of techniques such as Principal Component Analysis Tomography, analysis of the emission-line spectra, channel maps, Penalized Pixel Fitting and spectral synthesis applied to the optical and near-infrared data cubes, besides the analysis of Hubble Space Telescope images, we found that: (1) the AGN has a Seyfert 1 emission, with a very strong featureless continuum that we described as a power law with spectral index of 1.7. However, this emission may come not only from the AGN [as its point spread function (PSF) is broader than the PSF of the broad-line region (BLR)], but from hot and young stars, the same ones that probably account for the observed sigma-drop. (2) There is a correlation between redshift and the full width at half-maximum of the BLR emission lines. With a simple model assuming gravitational redshift, we described it as an emitting ring with varying emitting radii and small inclination angles. (3) There is an H II region close to the AGN, which is composed of many substructures forming an apparent spiral with a velocity gradient. (4) We also detected a probable outflow coming from the AGN and it seems to contaminate the H II region emission. (5) We identified an H2 rotating disc with orientation approximately perpendicular to this outflow. This suggests that the rotating disc is an extension of an inner torus/disc structure, which collimates the outflow emission, according to the Unified Model., Comment: 29 pages, 34 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

NGC 1313 is a bulgeless nearby galaxy, classified as SB(s)d. Its proximity allows high spatial resolution observations. We performed the first detailed analysis of the emission-line properties in the nuclear region of NGC 1313, using an optical data cube obtained with the Gemini Multi-object Spectrograph. We detected four main emitting areas, three of them (regions 1, 2 and 3) having spectra typical of H II regions. Region 1 is located very close to the stellar nucleus and shows broad spectral features characteristic of Wolf-Rayet stars. Our analysis revealed the presence of one or two WC4-5 stars in this region, which is compatible with results obtained by previous studies. Region 4 shows spectral features (as a strong H$\alpha$ emission line, with a broad component) typical of a massive emission-line star, such as a luminous blue variable, a B[e] supergiant or a B hypergiant. The radial velocity map of the ionized gas shows a pattern consistent with rotation. A significant drop in the values of the gas velocity dispersion was detected very close to region 1, which suggests that the young stars there were formed from this cold gas, possibly keeping low values of velocity dispersion. Therefore, although detailed measurements of the stellar kinematics were not possible (due to the weak stellar absorption spectrum of this galaxy), we predict that NGC 1313 may also show a drop in the values of the stellar velocity dispersion in its nuclear region., Comment: 14 pages, 10 figures, 1 table, published in MNRAS

The study of stellar kinematic properties may provide hints on the formation and evolution of elliptical and lenticular galaxies. Although most previous studies have focused on the large scale of these galaxies, their central regions (scales of $\sim$ 100 pc) may contain important clues about their structure, such as kinematically decoupled cores. This is the fourth paper on a sample of 10 massive ($\sigma$ $>$ 200 km s$^{-1}$) and nearby ($d$ $<$ 31 Mpc) early-type galaxies, observed with the integral field unit of the Gemini South Multi Object Spectrograph. Here, we analyse the properties of the stellar kinematics in the circumnuclear region. We fitted the line-of-sight velocity distribution with a Gauss-Hermite function. In seven galaxies of the sample, we detected a rotation pattern in their radial velocity maps that are anti-correlated with $h_3$. We interpret this as stellar structures in rotation embedded in the bulges of the objects. Comparing the stellar kinematic results with the PCA Tomography results and also with the gas kinematic results of IC 5181, it seems that this object may have a non-axisymmetric potential at its centre. The velocity dispersion maps of four objects have a nuclear peak, which must correspond, in part, to unresolved stellar rotation. In NGC 1404, we detected a kinematic decoupled core with an extension of $\sim$ 200 pc. This galaxy also has a $\sigma$-drop in the centre, which may be related to both stellar components in counterrotation or with a kinematically cold star-forming region., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, 2 tables, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We analyze an optical data cube of the nuclear region of NGC 3621, taken with the integral field unit of the Gemini Multi-object Spectrograph. We found that the previously detected central line emission in this galaxy actually comes from a blob, located at a projected distance of 2.14" +/- 0.08" (70.1 +/- 2.6 pc) from the stellar nucleus. Only diffuse emission was detected in the rest of the field of view, with a deficit of emission at the position of the stellar nucleus. Diagnostic diagram analysis reveals that the off-centered emitting blob has a Seyfert 2 spectrum. We propose that the line-emitting blob may be a "fossil" emission-line region or a light "echo" from an active galactic nucleus (AGN), which was significantly brighter in the past. Our estimates indicate that the bolometric luminosity of the AGN must have decreased by a factor of ~13 - 500 during the last ~230 years. A second scenario to explain the morphology of the line-emitting areas in the nuclear region of NGC 3621 involves no decrease of the AGN bolometric luminosity and establishes that the AGN is highly obscured toward the observer but not toward the line-emitting blob. The third scenario proposed here assumes that the off-centered line-emitting blob is a recoiling supermassive black hole, after the coalescence of two black holes. Finally, an additional hypothesis is that the central X-ray source is not an AGN, but an X-ray binary. We analyze the molecular H$_2$ emission and the stellar kinematics in a data cube of the nuclear region of M104, the Sombrero galaxy, obtained with NIFS on the Gemini-north telescope. After a careful subtraction of the stellar continuum, the only emission line we detected in the data cube was H$_2 \lambda 21218$. An analysis of this emission revealed the existence of a rotating molecular torus/disk, aproximately co-planar with a dusty structure detected by us in a previous work. We interpret these two structures as being associated with the same obscuring torus/disk. The kinematic maps provided by the Penalized Pixel Fitting method revealed that the stellar kinematics in the nuclear region of M104 appears to be the result of the superposition of a "cold" rotating disk and a "hot" bulge. Using a model of a thin eccentric disk, we reproduced the main properties of the maps of the stellar radial velocity and of the stellar velocity dispersion, specially within a distance of 0.2" from the kinematic axis (in regions at larger distances, the limitations of a model of a thin rotating disk become more visible). The general behavior of the $h_3$ map, which is significantly noisier than the other maps, was also reproduced by our model (although the discrepancies, in this case, are considerably higher). With our model, we obtained a mass of (9.0 +/- 2.0) x 10^8 Mo for the supermassive black hole of M104, which is compatible, at $1\sigma$ or $2\sigma$ levels, with the values obtained by previous studies., Comment: 11 pages, 5 figures, 1 table, published online in ApJ

Many Early-type galaxies (ETG) have ionized gas emission in their centres that extends to scales of ~ 1kpc. The majority of such objects are classified as LINERs, but the nature of their ionizing source is still not clear. The kinematics associated with these gaseous structures usually shows deviations from a pure rotational motion due to non-gravitational effects or to non-axisymmetric potentials. This is the third of a series of papers that describes a sample of 10 nearby and massive ETG observed with the Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph in Integral Field mode installed on the Gemini-South telescope. In paper II, we performed spectral synthesis to subtract the stellar components from the data cubes of the sample galaxies in order to study their nuclear spectra. Here, we analyse the circumnuclear gas emission (scales of ~ 100 pc) of the sample galaxies. Circumnuclear gas emission was detected in seven galaxies, all of them classified as LINERs. Pure gaseous discs are found in three galaxies. In two objects, gaseous discs are probably present, but their kinematics are affected by non-Keplerian motions. In IC 5181, we detected a spiral structure of gas that may be caused either by a non-axisymmetric potential or by an outflow together with a gaseous disc. In NGC 3136, an ionization bicone is present in addition to five compact structures with LINER-like emission. In galaxies with a gaseous disc, we found that ionizing photons emitted by an AGN are not enough to explain the observed Ha flux along this structure. On the other hand, the Ha flux distribution and equivalent width along the direction perpendicular the gaseous disc suggest the presence of low-velocity ionized gas emission which seem to be related to the nuclear activity. We propose a scenario for LINER-like circumnuclear regions where a low-velocity ionization cone is formed by a collimating agent aligned with the gaseous disc., Comment: 33 pages, 14 figures, 8 tables. In this second paper of a series, we present a treatment procedure for data cubes obtained with the Spectrograph for Integral Field Observations in the Near Infrared of the Very Large Telescope. We verified that the treatment procedure improves significantly the quality of the images of the data cubes, allowing a more detailed analysis. The images of the Br$\gamma$ and H$_2 \lambda 21218$ emission lines from the treated data cube of the nuclear region of NGC 5643 reveal the existence of ionized and molecular-gas clouds around the nucleus, which cannot be seen clearly in the images from the non-treated data cube of this galaxy. The ionized-gas clouds represent the narrow-line region, in the form of a bicone. We observe a good correspondence between the positions of the ionized-gas clouds in the Br$\gamma$ image and in an [O III] image, obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, of the nuclear region of this galaxy convolved with an estimate of the point-spread function of the data cube of NGC 5643. The morphologies of the ionized and molecular gas seem to be compatible with the existence of a molecular torus/disc that collimates the active galactic nucleus (AGN) emission. The molecular gas may also flow along this torus/disc, feeding the AGN. NGC 3115 is an S0 galaxy that has always been considered to have a pure absorption-line spectrum. Some recent studies have detected a compact radio-emitting nucleus in this object, coinciding with the photometric center and with a candidate for the X-ray nucleus. This is evidence of the existence of a low-luminosity active galactic nucleus (AGN) in the galaxy, although no emission line has ever been observed. We report the detection of an emission-line spectrum of a type 1 AGN in NGC 3115, with an H$\alpha$ luminosity of $L_{H\alpha} = (4.2 \pm 0.4) \times 10^{37}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Our analysis revealed that this AGN is located at a projected distance of $\sim 0.29" \pm 0.05"$ (corresponding to $\sim 14.3 \pm 2.5$ pc) from the stellar bulge center, which is coincident with the kinematic center of this object's stellar velocity map. The black hole corresponding to the observed off-centered AGN may form a binary system with a black hole located at the stellar bulge center. However, it is also possible that the displaced black hole is the merged remnant of the binary system coalescence, after the "kick" caused by the asymmetric emission of gravitational waves. We propose that certain features in the stellar velocity dispersion map are the result of perturbations caused by the off-centered AGN., Comment: 14 pages, 5 figures

Although it is well known that massive galaxies have central black holes, most of them accreting at low Eddington ratios, many important questions still remain open. Among them, are the nature of the ionizing source, the characteristics and frequencies of the broad line region and of the dusty torus. We report observations of 10 early-type galactic nuclei, observed with the IFU/GMOS spectrograph on the Gemini South telescope, analysed with standard techniques for spectral treatment and compared with results obtained with principal component analysis Tomography (Paper I). We performed spectral synthesis of each spaxel of the data cubes and subtracted the stellar component from the original cube, leaving a data cube with emission lines only. The emission lines were decomposed in multi-Gaussian components. We show here that, for eight galaxies previously known to have emission lines, the narrow line region can be decomposed in two components with distinct line widths. In addition to this, broad H$\alpha$ emission was detected in six galaxies. The two galaxies not previously known to have emission lines show weak H$\alpha$+[N II] lines. All 10 galaxies may be classified as low-ionization nuclear emission regions in diagnostic diagrams and seven of them have bona fide active galactic nuclei with luminosities between 10$^{40}$ and 10$^{43}$ erg s$^{-1}$. Most massive galaxies show emission lines that can be characterized as LINERs. To what extent this emission is related to AGNs or to stellar processes is still an open question. In this paper, we analysed a sample of such galaxies to study the central region in terms of nuclear and circumnuclear emission lines, as well as the stellar component properties. For this reason, we selected 10 massive ($\sigma$ > 200 km/s) nearby (d < 31 Mpc) galaxies and observed them with the IFU/GMOS (integral field unit/Gemini Multi-Object Spectrograph) spectrograph on the Gemini South Telescope. The data were analysed with principal component analysis (PCA) Tomography to assess the main properties of the objects. Two spectral regions were analysed: a yellow region (5100-5800 A), adequate to show the properties of the stellar component, and a red region (6250-6800 A), adequate to analyse the gaseous component. We found that all objects previously known to present emission lines have a central AGN-type emitting source. They also show gaseous and stellar kinematics typical of discs. Such discs may be co-aligned (NGC 1380 and ESO 208 G-21), in counter-rotation (IC 1459 and NGC 7097) or misaligned (IC 5181 and NGC 4546). We also found one object with a gaseous disc but no stellar disc (NGC 2663), one with a stellar disc but no gaseous disc (NGC 1404), one with neither stellar nor gaseous disc (NGC 1399) and one with probably ionization cones (NGC 3136). PCA Tomography is an efficient method for detecting both the central AGN and gaseous and stellar discs. In the two cases (NGC 1399 and NGC 1404) in which no lines were previously reported, we found no evidence of either nuclear or circumnuclear emission, using PCA Tomography only., Comment: 26 pages, 17 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a detailed procedure for treating data cubes obtained with the Near-Infrared Integral Field Spectrograph (NIFS) of the Gemini North telescope. This process includes the following steps: correction of the differential atmospheric refraction, spatial re-sampling, Butterworth spatial filtering, 'instrumental fingerprint' removal and Richardson-Lucy deconvolution. The clearer contours of the structures obtained with the spatial re-sampling, the high spatial-frequency noise removed with the Butterworth spatial filtering, the removed 'instrumental fingerprints' (which take the form of vertical stripes along the images) and the improvement of the spatial resolution obtained with the Richardson-Lucy deconvolution result in images with a considerably higher quality. An image of the Br{\gamma} emission line from the treated data cube of NGC 4151 allows the detection of individual ionized-gas clouds (almost undetectable without the treatment procedure) of the narrow-line region of this galaxy, which are also seen in an [O III] image obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. The radial velocities determined for each one of these clouds seem to be compatible with models of biconical outflows proposed by previous studies. The central parsec of the Milky Way is a very special region of our Galaxy; it contains the supermassive black hole associated with Sgr A* as well as a significant number of early-type stars and a complex structure of streamers of neutral and ionized gas, within two parsecs from the centre, representing a unique laboratory. We report the identification of a high velocity compact nebular filament 2.2 arcsec south of Sgr A*. The structure extends over ~1 arcsec and presents a strong velocity gradient of ~200 km s^{-1} arcsec^{-1}. The peak of maximum emission, seen in [Fe III] and He I lines, is located at d{\alpha} = +0.20 +/- 0.06 arcsec and d{\delta} = -2.20 +/- 0.06 arcsec with respect to Sgr A*. This position is near the star IRS 33N. The velocity at the emission peak is Vr = -267 km s^{-1}. The filament has a position angle of PA = 115{\degr} +/- 10{\degr}, similar to that of the Bar and of the Eastern Arm at that position. The peak position is located 0.7 arcsec north of the binary X-ray and radio transient CXOGX J174540.0-290031, a low-mass X-ray binary with an orbital period of 7.9 hr. The [Fe III] line emission is strong in the filament and its vicinity. These lines are probably produced by shock heating but we cannot exclude some X-ray photoionization from the low-mass X-ray binary. Although we cannot rule out the idea of a compact nebular jet, we interpret this filament as a possible shock between the Northern and the Eastern Arm or between the Northern Arm and the mini-spiral "Bar"., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, published online in MNRAS

We present an analysis of a data cube of the central region of M104, the Sombrero galaxy, obtained with the GMOS-IFU of the Gemini-South telescope, and report the discovery of collimation and scattering of the active galactic nucleus (AGN) emission in the circumnuclear region of this galaxy. Analysis with PCA Tomography and spectral synthesis revealed the existence of collimation and scattering of the AGN featureless continuum and also of a broad component of the H{\alpha} emission line. The collimation and scattering of this broad H{\alpha} component was also revealed by fitting the [NII] {\lambda}{\lambda}6548,6583 and H{\alpha} emission lines as a sum of Gaussian functions. The spectral synthesis, together with a V-I image obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope, showed the existence of circumnuclear dust, which may cause the light scattering. We also identify a dusty feature that may be interpreted as a torus/disk structure. The existence of two opposite regions with featureless continuum (P.A. = -18{\deg} +/- 13{\deg} and P.A. = 162{\deg} +/- 13{\deg}) along a direction perpendicular to the torus/disk (P.A. = 72{\deg} +/- 14{\deg}) suggests that this structure is approximately edge-on and collimates the AGN emission. The edge-on torus/disk also hides the broad-line region. The proposed scenario is compatible with the Unified Model and explains why only a weak broad component of the H{\alpha} emission line is visible and also why many previous studies detected no broad H\alpha. The technique used here proved to be an efficient method not only for detecting scattered light but also for testing the Unified Model in low luminosity AGNs., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

Due to its proximity, the mass of the supermassive black hole in the nucleus of Andromeda galaxy (M31), the most massive black hole in the Local Group of galaxies, has been measured by several methods involving the kinematics of a stellar disk that surrounds it. We report here the discovery of an eccentric Halpha emitting disk around the black hole at the center of M31 and show how modeling this disk can provide an independent determination of the mass of the black hole. Our model implies a mass of 5.0_{-1.0}^{+0.8} x 10^7 Mo for the central black hole, consistent with the average of determinations by methods involving stellar dynamics, and compatible (at 1-sigma level) with measurements obtained from the most detailed models of the stellar disk around the central black hole. This value is also consistent with the M-sigma relation. In order to make a comparison, we applied our simulation on the stellar kinematics in the nucleus of M31 and concluded that the parameters obtained for the stellar disk are not formally compatible with the parameters obtained for the Halpha emitting disk. This result suggests that the stellar and the Halpha emitting disks are intrinsically different from each other. A plausible explanation is that the Halpha emission is associated with a gaseous disk. This hypothesis is supported by the detection of traces of weaker nebular lines in the nuclear region of M31. Three-dimensional (3D) spectroscopy techniques are becoming more and more popular, producing an increasing number of large data cubes. The challenge of extracting information from these cubes requires the development of new techniques for data processing and analysis. We apply the recently developed technique of Principal Component Analysis (PCA) Tomography to a data cube from the center of the elliptical galaxy NGC 7097 and show that this technique is effective in decomposing the data into physically interpretable information. We find that the first five principal components of our data are associated with distinct physical characteristics. In particular, we detect a LINER with a weak broad component in the Balmer lines. Two images of the LINER are present in our data, one seen through a disk of gas and dust, and the other after scattering by free electrons and/or dust particles in the ionization cone. Furthermore, we extract the spectrum of the LINER, decontaminated from stellar and extended nebular emission, using only the technique of PCA Tomography. Context. Close binary supersoft X-ray sources (CBSS) are binary systems that contain a white dwarf with stable nuclear burning on its surface. These sources, first discovered in the Magellanic Clouds, have high accretion rates and near-Eddington luminosities (10^37 - 10^38 erg/s) with high temperatures (T = 2 - 7 x 10^5 K). Aims. The total number of known objects in the MC is still small and, in our galaxy, even smaller. We observed the field of the unidentified transient supersoft X-ray source RX J0527.8-6954 in order to identify its optical counterpart. Methods. The observation was made with the IFU-GMOS on the Gemini South telescope with the purpose of identifying stars with possible He II or Balmer emission or else of observing nebular extended jets or ionization cones, features that may be expected in CBSS. Results. The X-ray source is identified with a B5e V star that is associated with subarcsecond extended Halpha emission, possibly bipolar. Conclusions. If the primary star is a white dwarf, as suggested by the supersoft X-ray spectrum, the expected orbital period exceeds 21 h; therefore, we believe that the 9.4 h period found so far is not associated to this system., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures, A&A, in press

To extract information from them can be quite complex, and hence the development of new methods of data analysis is desirable. We briefly describe a method of analysis of data cubes (data from single field observations, containing two spatial and one spectral dimension) that uses Principal Component Analysis (PCA) to express the data in the form of reduced dimensionality, facilitating efficient information extraction from very large data sets. We applied the method, for illustration purpose, to the central region of the low ionization nuclear emission region (LINER) galaxy NGC 4736, and demonstrate that it has a type 1 active nucleus, not known before. NGC 7582 was identified as a Starburst galaxy in the optical \cite[(Veron et al. 1981)]{Veron et al.(1981)} but its X-Ray emission is typical of a Seyfert 1 galaxy \cite[(Ward et al. 1978)]{Ward et al.(1978)}. We analyzed a datacube of this object obtained with the GMOS-IFU on the Gemini-South telescope. After a subtraction of the stellar component using the {\sc starlight} code \cite[(Cid Fernandes et al. 2005)]{Cid Fernandes et al. (2005)}, we looked for optical signatures of the AGN. We detected a broad $H\alpha$ component (figure \ref{fig1}) in the source where \cite[Bianchi et al.(2007)]{Bianchi et al.(2007)} identified the AGN in an HST optical image. We also found a broad $H\beta$ feature (figure \ref{fig2}), but its emission reveals a extended source. We suggest that it is the light of the AGN scattered in the ionization cone. We propose that NGC 7582 is a Seyfert 1 galaxy. NGC 7582 is defined as a Starburst/AGN galaxy, since its optical and X-Ray spectra reveal both characteristics. In this work, we show the results of a stellar population modeling in a datacube taken with the Gemini South telescope. We found that $\sim$ 90% of the light in the field of view is emitted by stars that are less than 1 billion years old. A strong burst occurred about $\sim$ 6 million years ago and has nearly solar metallicity. Stellar archeology of nearby LINER galaxies may reveal if there is a stellar young population that may be responsible for the LINER phenomenon. Emission line ratios have been essential for determining physical parameters such as gas temperature and density in astrophysical gaseous nebulae. With the advent of panoramic spectroscopic devices, images of regions with emission lines related to these physical parameters can, in principle, also be produced. We show that, with observations from modern instruments, it is possible to transform images taken from density sensitive forbidden lines into images of emission from high and low-density clouds by applying a transformation matrix. In order to achieve this, images of the pairs of density sensitive lines as well as the adjacent continuum have to be observed and combined. We have computed the critical densities for a series of pairs of lines in the infrared, optical, ultraviolet and X-rays bands, and calculated the pair line intensity ratios in the high and low-density limit using a 4 and 5 level atom approximation. In order to illustrate the method we applied it to GMOS-IFU data of two galactic nuclei. We conclude that this method provides new information of astrophysical interest, especially for mapping low and high-density clouds; for this reason we call it "the ld/hd imaging method"., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication on MNRAS

Astronomy has evolved almost exclusively by the use of spectroscopic and imaging techniques, operated separately. With the development of modern technologies it is possible to obtain datacubes in which one combines both techniques simultaneously, producing images with spectral resolution. To extract information from them can be quite complex, and hence the development of new methods of data analysis is desirable. We present a method of analysis of datacube (data from single field observations, containing two spatial and one spectral dimension) that uses PCA (Principal Component Analysis) to express the data in the form of reduced dimensionality, facilitating efficient information extraction from very large data sets. PCA transforms the system of correlated coordinates into a system of uncorrelated coordinates ordered by principal components of decreasing variance. The new coordinates are referred to as eigenvectors, and the projections of the data onto these coordinates produce images we will call tomograms. The association of the tomograms (images) to eigenvectors (spectra) is important for the interpretation of both. The eigenvectors are mutually orthogonal and this information is fundamental for their handling and interpretation. When the datacube shows objects that present uncorrelated physical phenomena, the eigenvector's orthogonality may be instrumental in separating and identifying them. By handling eigenvectors and tomograms one can enhance features, extract noise, compress data, extract spectra, etc. We applied the method, for illustration purpose only, to the central region of the LINER galaxy NGC 4736, and demonstrate that it has a type 1 active nucleus, not known before.
