As espécies de peixes de água doce encontradas no estado de São Paulo distribuem-se entre quatro bacias hidrográficas principais: Alto Paraná, Paraíba do Sul, Ribeira de Iguape e um conjunto de pequenas drenagens costeiras que desembocam diretamente no oceano Atlântico. Como estas bacias drenam áreas com diferentes tipos de vegetação, solos, etc., cada uma tem uma composição de espécies diferente. No Alto Paraná, o grande Rio Paraná e alguns de seus maiores afluentes (Tietê, Paranapanema e Grande) possuem espécies de grande porte que sustentam a pesca comercial e de subsistência, mas 70 a 80% da ictiofauna é composta por espécies de pequeno porte de pequenos riachos, incluindo os de cabeceira, onde muitas são endêmicas. O inventário da ictiofauna foi incrementado através de três projetos de pesquisa apoiados pelo programa BIOTA/FAPESP, mas ainda resta muito trabalho de coleta e descrição de novas espécies de áreas pouco exploradas, como calhas de rios, regiões de cabeceiras, alagadiços em áreas marginais de reservatórios e lagos. A ictiofauna do Estado de São Paulo tem sofrido da ação deletéria de poluição, desmatamento, esgotos urbanos e construção de reservatórios para produção de energia elétrica, etc., de tal forma que atualmente 66 espécies são consideradas ameaçadas em vários níveis, de acordo com os critérios da "International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources" (IUCN). The fish species living in the freshwaters of the São Paulo state (393) are distributed among four major river basins: upper Paraná, Paraíba do Sul, Ribeira de Iguape and a set of small coastal drainages flowing directly into the Atlantic Ocean. Since these river basins drain areas with distinct vegetation types, soils, etc., each one has a different species composition. In the Upper Paraná the large Rio Paraná and some of its large tributaries (Tietê, Paranapanema, and Grande) contain large species that support commercial fisheries, however, 70 to 80% of the ichthyofauna is composed by small species found in small streams, including those in headwaters where many are endemic. The inventory of the ichthyofauna greatly benefited from three research projects supported by the BIOTA/FAPESP program, but much work remains to be done to collect and describe new species from areas such as deep channels, headwaters and marginal and swampy áreas around ponds and man-made lakes and reservoirs. The ichthyofauna of the São Paulo State has suffered from deforestation, sewage, damming of rivers for construction of power plants, urbanization, etc., so that 66 species are currently considered threatened at various levels according to the criteria of the International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources (IUCN).

O número de espécies de peixes marinhos listadas para a costa do estado de São Paulo é razoavelmente alto em comparação com outras áreas do Brasil com extensão semelhante, a maior parte representada por espécies demersais que resultaram de coletas realizadas ao longo da plataforma continental. Espécies de fundos rochosos e áreas de recifes e de regiões profundas do oceano são menos abundantes. Como o inventário ainda é incompleto e nenhum projeto foi realizado através do programa BIOTA/FAPESP, espera-se que grupos de pesquisa engajados no estudo de sistemática, biologia e outros aspectos relativos aos peixes marinhos sejam estimulados a contribuir para aumentar o conhecimento atual do grupo. The number of marine fish species listed for the coast of the São Paulo state is reasonably high in comparison with other Brazilian coastal regions of similar extension and mostly represented by demersal species that resulted from collecting efforts along the continental shelf. Species from rocky bottoms and reef areas as well as those from the deep sea are less abundant. Since the inventory is far from complete and no projects related to marine fishes have been carried out through the BIOTA/FAPESP program, it is expected that research groups involved in systematics, biology and other aspects related to the study of marine fishes be stimulated to contribute to increase of the knowledge of the group.

O gênero é corroborado como monofilético com base em 38 sinapomorfias, das quais 13 são exclusivas, 19 homoplásticas, e seis dependentes de otimização. Copella arnoldi é o taxon basal, espécie irmã do clado composto por todas as demais espécies do gênero. O clado que inclui Copella nattereri e C. stigmasemion é grupo irmão do clado (C. eigenmanni (Copella compta and C. vilmae)). Copella é grupo irmão de Pyrrhulina, e ambos são membros da subfamília Pyrrhulininae, caracterizados por apresentarem várias perdas ósseas e reduções relacionadas à complexidade da escultura dos seus esqueletos, principalmente em Copella e Pyrrhulina, quando comparados às espécies de Lebiasininae. Com base na análise filogenética e na observação da série ontogenética de vários representantes de Lebiasinidae, supõe-se que muitos traços morfológicos existentes em Pyrrhulininae tenham evoluído por meio do truncamento no desenvolvimento de characteres. A análise do material tipo de todas as espécies nominais e de uma grande quantidade de exemplares de Copella de diversas drenagens da América do Sul, indicou que seis de dez espécies nominais devem ser reconhecidas como válidas: Copella arnoldi, C. compta, C. eigenmanni, C. nattereri, C. stigmasemion, e C. vilmae. Copella arnoldi é sinônimo sênior de C. carsevennensis, C. eigenmanni arnoldi é sinônimo sênior de C. metae, C. nattereri é sinônimo sênior de C. callolepis e C. meinkeni, e C. stigmasemion, nova combinação, é sinônimo senior de C. nigrofasciata. Espécies de Copella ocorrem nas bacias dos rios Amazonas e Orinoco, e drenagens costeiras da Guiana, Guiana Francesa ... A hypothesis of the phylogenetic relationships of the genus Copella is proposed on the basis of the parsimony analysis of 120 morphological characters found in all the species of the genus recognized as valid in the taxonomic review, and 17 outgroup taxa, most of them members of the family Lebiasinidae. The genus is corroborated as monophyletic based on 38 synapomorphies, of which 13 are exclusive, 19 homoplastic, and six dependent of optimization. Copella arnoldi is the basal taxa, sister of a clade including the remaining species of the genus. The clade represented by Copella nattereri and C. stigmasemion is sister group of the clade (C. eigenmanni (Copella compta and C. vilmae)). Copella is sister of Pyrrhulina, and both are members of the subfamily Pyrrhulininae characterized by having several bony losses and reductions related to the complexity of the sculpturing of their skeleton, especially in Copella and Pyrrhulina, when compared to species of Lebisininae. Based on the results of the phylogenetic analysis and on the observation of the ontogenetic series of several representatives of Lebiasinidae, it is supposed that many morphological traits present in the Pyrrhulininae have evolved through developmental truncation of characters. Based on the analysis of the type material of all nominal species and of a large number of specimens of Copella from several drainages in South America, six out of ten nominal species are recognized as valid: Copella arnoldi, C. compta, C. eigenmanni, C. nattereri, C. stigmasemion, and C. vilmae. Copella arnoldi is considered senior synonym of C. carsevennensis, C. eigenmanni is a senior synonym of C. metae, C. nattereri is a senior synonym of C. callolepis and C. meinkeni, and C. stigmasemion, new combination, is a senior synonym of C. nigrofasciata. O status taxonômico de algumas espécies e gêneros dentro desta família ainda é confuso, devido a sua alta homogeneidade morfológica. Sete espécies são encontradas no Brasil, sendo M. liza e M. platanus encontradas em maior abundancia. M. liza está distribuída desde a Flórida até o Rio de Janeiro e M. platanus desde o Rio de Janeiro até a Argentina. Com o desenvolvimento desse trabalho, pretendeu-se testar a hipótese de que M. liza e M. platanus constituem uma única espécie e verificar se estas espécies são distintas de M. cephalus. Para tanto, empregamos as seqüências de seis genes mitocondriais: COI de 654 pb, 16S rRNA de 609pb, 12S rRNA de 423pb, ATPase 6 de 579pb, ATPase 8 de 117pb e Cytb de 975pb. Foram analisados 85 indivíduos de M. liza, M. curema, M. cephalus, M. trichodon, M. incilis , M. rubrioculus, M. hospes e M. sp. procedentes do Brasil, da Argentina, do Uruguai, da Venezuela e da Grécia (M. cephalus). Os resultados mostraram uma separação de todas as espécies, com um consistente índice de bootstrap (100%), os exemplares de M. liza e M. platanus formaram um só clado, com uma divergência genética de 0%, sugerindo que este clado constitui uma única espécie sem uma estruturação populacional evidente, indicando um alto grau de fluxo gênico mesmo com uma ampla distribuição no oceano Atlântico. Mugil cephalus e M. liza apresentaram uma distancia genética interespecífica de 19,5%, sugerindo que são espécies diferentes, mesmo apresentando muitas semelhanças morfológicas. Nossos dados evidenciaram a presença de três linhagens diferentes dentro de M. curema formando assim um complexo de espécies que precisa ser resolvido. Concluímos que M. liza é uma única espécie semelhante morfologicamente a M. cephalus mas diferente geneticamente The family Mugilidae includes seventeen genera and more than 60 species worldwide distributed, except in the polar regions. The taxonomic status of some species and genera within this family is still confused, due to its high morphological uniformity. Seven species are found in Brazil being Mugil liza and M. platanus the most common species. M. liza is distributed from Florida to Rio de Janeiro and M. platanus from Rio de Janeiro to Argentina. With the development of this work, we sought to test the hypothesis that M. liza and M. platanus constitute a single species and to verify if these species are distinct from M. cephalus. For this, we used the sequences of six mitochondrial genes: COI of 654pb, 16S rRNA of 609pb, 12S rRNA of ATPase 8 of 579pb, ATPase 6 of 117pb and Cytb of 975pb. We analyzed 85 individuals of M. liza, M. curema, M. cephalus, M. trichodon, M. incilis, M. rubrioculus, M. hospes and M. sp. from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Venezuela and Greece (M. cephalus). The results showed a separation of all species, with a consistent bootstrap index (100%), specimens of M. liza and M. platanus formed one clade, with a divergence of 0%, suggesting that this clade represents a single species without a clear population structure, showing high degree of gene flow even with a wide distribution in the Atlantic Ocean. Demonstra-se que Rypticus macrostigmus Courtenay e R. brachyrhinus Courtenay são sinônimos júnior de Rypticus bornoi Beeb e Tee- Van e R. randalli Courtenay respectivamente. Entre os outros serranídeos da tribo Grammistini, a monofilia de Rypticus é sustentada por seis modificações na estrutura do esqueleto axial e pela redução no número de infraorbitais. Rypticus bistrispinus Mitchill e R. burnoi compartilham as parapófises co-ossificadas da última vértebra pré-caudal não bifurcadas distalmente. Um grupo consistindo de R. maculatus Holbrook, R. nigripinnis Gill, R. randalli, R. subbifrenatus Gill, R. saponaceus Bloch e Schneider, R. bicolor Valenciennes e R. courtenayi McCarthy é definido por reduções no número de supraneurais e espinhos pré-operculares. Rypticus nigripinnis, R. randalli, R. subbifrenatus, R. saponaceus, R. bicolor e R. courtenayi compartilham um padrão único de morfologia de poros da cabeça. Dentro deste grupo há duas linhagens distintas: uma (R. randalli + R. nigripinnis) é sustentada pela redução no número de espinhos operculares e outra (R. subbifrenatus R. saponaceus, R. bicolor+ R. courtenayi) é sustentada por um terceiro estado distinto de morfologia de poros. Rypticus saponaceus, R. bicolor e R. courtenayi formam um grupo definido por um padrão de colorido derivado e aumento no número de cecos pilóricos. Mais inclusivamente, jovens de R. bicolor e R. courtenayi compartilham três faixas longitudinais escuras partindo da órbita. São apresentados mapas nos quais amplia-se as distribuições geográficas conhecidas de algumas espécies. informações sobre habitat e hábitos de vida são apresentadas e discutidas. Among serranids of the tribe Grammistini, monophyly of the genus is supported by six modifications in axial squeleton structure and reduction in the number of infraorbitals. Rypticus bistrispinus Mitchill and R. bornoi share the co-ossified parapophyses on last precaudal vertebrae without distal bifurcation. A clade consisting of R. maculatus Holbrook, R. randalli, R. nigripinnis Gill, R. subbifrenatus Gill, R. saponaceus Bloch & Schneider, R. bicolor Valenciennes and R. courtenayi McCarthy is defined by reduction in number of supraneurals and preopercular spines. Rypticus nigripinnis, R. randalli, R. subbifrenatus, R. saponaceus, R. bicolor and R. courtenayi share a unique head pore morphology. Two lineages are recognized within this clade: one (R. randalli + R. nigripinnis) is defined by reduction in the number of opercular spines and the other (R. subbifrenatus + R. saponaceus - R. bicolor + R. courtenayi) by a third distinct state in head pore morphology. Rypticus saponaceus, R. bicolor and R. courtenayi share a derived color pattern and increase in number of pyloric cecae. More inclusively, youngs of R. bicolor and R. courtenayi share three dark stripes originating at the orbit. Distribution maps are presented, in which some species have their known range extended. Information about habitat and life habits are presented and discussed. Some cladogenetic events hypothesized based on morphology are corroborated by vicariant biogeography.
