biomass ,heritability ,selection gain ,Pennisetum purpureum Schum ,Smith and Hazel index - Abstract
Pennisetum purpureum Schum. has been a key alternative as an energy source in Brazil because of its higher dry matter accumulation and fiber content. This research aimed to select superior individuals of P. purpureum for energy purposes using among-and-within family selection. The study was carried out in Campos dos Goytacazes- RJ (Brazil), using eight full-sib families. Plants were individually assessed during two pasture cuttings, one in 2014, and another in 2015. The dry matter production (DMP) was correlated with the number of tillers, stem diameter, plant height, and neutral detergent fiber content. Plant selection criteria in both cuts were through direct and indirect selections, and Smith and Hazel index. A joint analysis of variance showed significant differences for all five traits assessed in both cuts. The results achieved with Smith and Hazel index were promising for simultaneous selection of the evaluated traits, favoring selection of superior families and individuals them.

The elephant-grass undergoes successive cutting and periodical evaluations that it possible to identify clones with high stability for dry matter production, which can be used for energy production. The present study was carried out to evaluate stability dry matter yield for different parametric and non-parametric methods in elephant grass genotypes for biomass production undergoes successive cutting in the agroclimatic conditions of the Norte Fluminense (RJ, Brazil). The variable measured in the 40 genotypes was dry matter yield (DMY) at 2009, 2010 and 2011 in a field study designed as randomized block design with two replicates. Each sample was grown in different environment condition. The stability methods tested were the Yates and Cochran’s, Plaisted and Peterson’s, Wricke’s ecovalence, Annicchiarico’s, Lin and Binns’ and Kang and Phan’s. Results indicated that cutting (E) and genotypes (G) influenced significantly on the performance of dry matter yield. The non-parametric stability methods were effective for the evaluation of stability in dry matter yield. Genotypes Mercker, Pinda-México, Mercker 86-México, Guaçu/IZ, Mercker Pinda, P-241-Piracicaba and Cubano Pinda were stable stability dry matter yield. Hence, there are genotypes may be exploited in future breeding programmes in order to improve productivity of upland elephant grass over environment.

Red rice is known as a weed in rice fields blank. It is grown by small farmers in areas of the Northeast and N orthern Minas Gerais ( Brazil). Despite having such features as lar ge size, greater susceptibility to lodging, longer duration of seed dormancy after harvest have been observed genotypes of red rice with traits similar to white rice cultivars. Thus, the objectives were to compare the morphological and agronomics traits of rice genotypes of red with white rice recommended for cultivation i n flood irrigation and dry , quality and physiological dormancy in two periods of storage, and combined , determine the point of physiological maturity of seeds in irrigated crop. The experi ment was installed in the experimental field of Depart a ment o de Fitotecnia UFRRJ in 2009. To the evaluation of morphological and agronomics traits was used a randomized block design with five replications. In the case of quality and physiological dormancy was used factorial 4 (genotypes) x 3 (1 control and 2 treatments of dormancy) in randomized blocks with five replications. After A nalysis of variance at each time of storage was performed overall data analysis. Means were compared by Student Newman Keuls t est at 5% probability. To determine the physiological maturity point was used a randomized blocks in split plots. After analysis of variance was performed regression analysis for the traits of water content and dry matter. It was observed that the red rice genotypes had lower yield compared to white rice recommended for cultivation under flooded conditions. Already in upland conditions the genotype ?Vermelho Virg? nia showed higher productivity although not significant differences between treatments. In both culture conditions the red rice genotypes had lower length of caryopsis. In the case of genotype ?Vermelho Virginia?, the caryopsis was thicker and the plant was larger compared with the genotypes of white rice. The genotype ?Vermelho Pequeno? had lost dormancy after 30 days of storage while genotypes ?Vermelho Virginia?, ?EPAGRI109? and ?SCSBRS Tio Taka? showed the loss of dormancy only after 60 days of storage. It was found that the point of physiological maturity was reached at 25 days after the flower ing period when the seeds were the maximum accumulation of dry matter. The g enotypes ?Vermelho Virg? nia ? and ?Vermelho Pequeno? have potential to be used in breeding programs aimed at obtaining new cultivars.

Don) is distinguished because it is exclusive source of vincristine and vinblastine alkaloids, however they occur in low concentrations in the species. Such alkaloids are used in chemotherapy for the treatment of tumors, leukemias and lymphomas. Therefore, it is essential to develop a breeding program in search of superior genotypes for vincristine and vinblastine production. For this, it is necessary, initially, the study of the preferential reproduction mode of the species for the correct application of the breeding methods. Given the above, this research aimed to study the preferential mode of reproduction in 10 genotypes of periwinkle from the germplasm collection of the Federal Rural University of Rio de Janeiro, based on the pollen:ovule (P:O) ratio, histochemical pollen, emission and development of pollen tubes in vivo, pollen viability and receptivity of stigma. As well as to estimate genetic diversity using ISSR molecular markers (Inter Simple Sequence Repeats) among the analyzed genotypes. To estimate the ratio (P:O), anthers of each flower were excised, and pollen grains were counted under a microscope; ovaries of the same flowers were dissected, and the ovules were counted under stereomicroscope. In the histochemical analysis of pollen grains were used the dyes Sudan IV and the solution I2KI for the detection of lipid and starch, respectively. The emission and development of pollen tubes in vivo were evaluated in flower buds and flowers in anthesis, under fluorescence microscopy, using 0.1% aniline blue fluorochrome. For the pollen viability, in flower buds, the triple solution of Alexander was used and for the receptivity of the stigma was adopted the solution of alpha-naphthyl acetate, in closed flowers and anthesis. In the genotypic analysis, 15 ISSR primers were used. The phenetic matrix was estimated by dissimilarity index of Jaccard and the grouping of the genotypes was performed by UPGMA (Unweighted Pair Groups Method with Arithmetic Mean). The consistency of the clustering pattern was verified through the cophenetic correlation. The results of the ratio (P:O) indicated that eight of the 10 genotypes presented both facultative self-pollinated and facultative cross pollinated (mixed mating). However, two genotypes presented only one mode of reproduction, facultative cross pollinated, in UFRRJ VIN007, and facultative self-pollinated in UFRRJ VIN004. The receptive stigmas and the high pollen viability in flower buds established favorable conditions for the occurrence of cleistogamy. Based on the emission and development of pollen tubes in vivo, it was verified that of the eight genotypres with mixed reproduction mode, six of them had a strong tendency to allogamy and all were self-compatible. It was also verified the occurrence of cleistogamy in 50% of the genotypes. In the case of UFRRJ VIN004 such occurrence was accentuated, which reinforces its tendency to autogamy. However, it was observed that seven genotypes, including UFRRJ VIN007, showed a strong tendency to allogamy. In view of this, a great diversity of reproductive strategies can be observed in periwinkle, since both self-pollinated and allogamy may be present. The high genetic diversity obtained can be explained by the strong tendency to allogamy found in 70% of the analyzed genotypes A vinca (Catharanthus roseus [L.] G. Don) distingue-se por ser fonte exclusiva dos alcaloides vincristina e vimblastina, no entanto ocorrem em baixas concentra??es na esp?cie.

Red rice has greater added value and, consequently, greater market value when compared to white rice, mainly due to its functional characteristics, such as high antioxidant content. A red rice cultivar capable of presenting great productivity, together with the high market value of this product, suggests that this crop may appear as an alternative production for producers who do not have large areas and who need to add value to their production, seeking to increase their productivity income. Research on the cultivation of red rice is still scarce, there is a need to expand the study of the adaptability and stability of the existing red rice strains in order to launch new cultivars, in order to make possible the recommendation of this cultivation for different regions and different production systems. The objective of this study was to morphologically describe two cultivars of red rice and to evaluate their respective agronomic behaviors, comparing them to two cultivars of white rice, in three locations and two consecutive years, in the state of Rio de Janeiro. The experiments were carried out during the agricultural years of 2016/2017 and 2017/2018 in the municipalities of Campos dos Goytacazes, Serop?dica and Pinheiral, and were conducted in a rainfed system, with supplementary irrigation, and under organic production management. The morphological characteristics were evaluated: flag feaf angle, leaf color, stem length, presence of edges, panicle length, apiculus color, glumelle color, grain length and grain shape; and the following agronomic characteristics: viable panicles per square meter, panicle spikelets, spikelet fertility, 100 spikelet weight, yield, stem length, panicle length, plant height, cultural cycle and mean flowering; in addition, the classification of the grain and the milling yield and whole grains were evaluated. The experimental design was a randomized block design, with four treatments and five replications. The treatments were registered cultivars of white rice, BRS Esmeralda and IAC 201 and the traditional cultivars of red rice, ENA-AR1601 and Virginia. The data were submitted to analysis of variance, individual for each location and year, the means were compared by the Tukey test (p

No. of bitstreams: 1 2018 - Diogo de Vilela Marinho.pdf: 2358203 bytes, checksum: b2a8654ec9f74b03c3ea93f839a00809 (MD5) Previous issue date: 2018-12-13 Conselho Nacional de Desenvolvimento Cient?fico e Tecnol?gico, CNPq, Brasil. Breeding programs are of great importance for modern agriculture and for the sustainable increase of agricultural production. However, in the case of cherry tomatoes (Solanum lycopersicum var. Cerasiforme), there is still a lack of data and studies in the literature that are sufficient to satisfactorily subsidize breeding or genetic studies on this crop. The present study had as objectives: to study the heritability of agronomic characteristics in populations P1, P2, F1, F2, F3 and F4 of Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme obtained with the crossing of cultivars ENAS 1125 X PERINHA ?GUA BRANCA of Cherry Tomato; to estimate genetic parameters for agronomic and productive characteristics to guide the best choice in breeding methods to obtain pure lines with market potential. The experiments were conducted under field conditions between November 2016 and September 2018, at the Vegetation House in the Large Crops Sector of the Agronomy Institute and at the Experimental Field of the Institute of Agronomy - Department of Plant Science - UFRRJ. The design, in both experiments, was in randomized blocks (DBC), following the recommendation of the literature to conduct the culture. The characteristics evaluated in the first experiment were: average weight of the fruits (grams), average weight of the bunches (grams), total production per plant (kg), number of fruits (units) and soluble solids content (?Brix). It was found complete dominance only in the characteristic soluble solids content, absence of dominance for number of fruits and over-dominance for average fruit weight, total production per plant and average weight of the bunches. The heritability estimates in the broad sense presented 58% for average fruit weight, 66% for total production per plant, 33% for average weight of bunches, 67% for fruit number and 75% for soluble solids content. The heritabilities in the restricted sense were estimated in 23% for average fruit weight, 3% for total production per plant, 2% for average weight of bunches, 0% for fruit number and 53% for soluble solids content. In the second experiment, the average weight of fruits (grams), total production per plant (kg) and number of fruits (units) were evaluated. Estimates of heritability in the approximate restricted sense presented values of 14% for total number of fruits, 30% for total production and 40% for average fruit weight. Thus, the characteristics of average fruit weight, total yield per plant and average weight of the bunches showed that they are inheritable characteristics and indicated for the breeding of the cultivars ENAS 1125 X PERINHA ?GUA BRANCA of cherry tomatoes. This study was financed in part by the Coordena??o de Aperfei?oamento de Pessoal de N?vel Superior - Brasil (CAPES) - Finance Code 001.
