Abstract

Given the increasing pressure on water bodies, it is imperative to explore sustainable methodologies for wastewater treatment and reuse. The simultaneous presence of multiples contaminants in complex wastewater, such as the liquid effluents from biogas plants, can compromise biological treatment effectiveness for reclaiming water. Vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands were established as low-cost decentralized wastewater treatment technologies to treat the liquid fraction of digestate from municipal organic waste with metals, antibiotics, and antibiotic resistance genes, to allow its reuse in irrigation. Twelve lab-scale planted constructed wetlands were assembled with gravel, light expanded clay aggregate and sand, testing four different treating conditions (liquid digestate spiked with oxytetracycline, sulfadiazine, or ofloxacin, at 100 µg/L, or without dosing) during 3 months. Physicochemical parameters (pH, chemical oxygen demand (COD), nutrients, metals, and antibiotics), the microbial communities dynamics (through 16S high-throughput sequencing) and antibiotic resistance genes removal (qPCR) were monitored in influents and effluents. Systems removed 85.8%-96.9% of organic matter (as COD), over 98.1% of ammonium and phosphate ions, and 69.3%-99.4% of nitrate and nitrite ions, with no significant differences between the presence or absence of antibiotics. Removal of Fe, Mn, Zn, Cu, Pb and Cr exceeded 82% in all treatment cycles. The treatment also removed oxytetracycline, sulfadiazine and ofloxacin over 99%, and decreased intl1, tetA, tetW, sul1 and qnrS gene copies. Nonetheless, after 3 months of ofloxacin dosing, qnrS gene started being detected. Removal processes relied on high HRT (14 days) and various mechanisms including sorption, biodegradation, and precipitation. Microbial community diversity in liquid digestate changed significantly after treatment in constructed wetlands with a decrease in the initial Firmicutes dominance, but with no clear effect of antibiotics on the microbial community structure. Removals above 85% and 94% were observed for Streptococcus and Clostridium, respectively. Results suggest that vertical subsurface flow constructed wetlands were a suitable technology for treating the liquid digestate to reuse it in irrigation agricultural systems, contributing to the circular bioeconomy concept. However, a more profound understanding of effective wastewater treatment strategies is needed to avoid antibiotic resistance genes dissemination. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

39. Sketching and visual perception in conceptual design : case studies of novice and expert architecture students

Abstract

This research is concerned with conceptual sketches, visual perception and verbal description. Firstly, it focuses on the role of sketching in conceptual design and begins to question why conceptual sketches are considered a good medium for reflective conversation with one's own ideas and imagery. Secondly, it focuses exclusively on the mental process involved in the analysis and verbal description of conceptual sketches. The empirical study examines how novice and expert designers might perceive different things from the same conceptual sketch and thus use different verbal descriptions, and what this might reveal about their different approaches to design. For this reason some experiments on visual perception, conceptual sketches and verbal description were conducted with expert and novice architecture students. The main objective is to verify to what extent the use of formal references such as line, square or circle and symbolic references such as describing a circle as a sun or a long oval as a sausage, help to understand how designers might think with sketches, while searching for a specific design solution. It also investigates which of the two types of images (non-architectural and architectural sketches) present greater potential for allowing the use of formal and symbolic verbal references, and why. The results show that, on average, the expert group used more formal and symbolic verbal references per minute than novices while describing the same images. The results also show that the non-architectural sketch was judged as easier to describe than the architectural one and gave rise to the use of more symbolic references. This can be seen to confirm earlier work suggesting that we fmd symbolic descriptions easier and more powerful than formal ones. The results also suggest that the expert students were more able to employ symbolic references to architectural concepts than novice students. However, in many other respects there were few differences between the groups. This may in part be due to the limitations of the empirical methodology employed.

Abstract

This article aims to discuss how globalization is influencing the development and implementation of school curricula in different parts of the world. To achieve this objective, a literature review on the subject was carried out, with the aim of identifying the main international trends in education that are influencing school curricula, as well as the changes that are taking place in the way curricula are developed and implemented. The results indicate that globalization is leading to greater diversity and inclusion in school curricula, with a greater emphasis on topics such as human rights, sustainability, cultural and linguistic diversity. In addition, digital technologies are playing an increasingly important role in the design and implementation of school curricula. However, there are also challenges to be faced, such as the need to balance labor market demands with educational goals and the need to promote inclusion and equity in school curricula. We conclude that educators need to be aware of international trends in education and changes in the way curricula are developed and implemented in order to ensure that students are prepared to face the challenges of a globalized world. It is suggested that future research focus on exploring the implications of globalization on the school curriculum and educational practices, as well as on developing innovative approaches for designing and implementing more inclusive and relevant curricula for the globalized context. In order to assess C. difficile/AMR dissemination between humans, animals and the environment, studies were conducted on samples from 4 countries (2 HOALs Portugal, Austria, 1 agricultural facility Estonia, single compartments Ireland). The results obtained allowed to perform a classification of pig farm compartments according to their role in the epidemiology of C. difficile, which was identified in all the following ecosystems: pig barn (faeces), manure (pig), wild animals, soil (agricultural fields), river water, ground water, wastewater treatment plant and air. In addition, in each HOAL, a different toxigenic C. difficile RT (RT033, RT078 and RT049, respectively) was dominant, reflecting well-established transmission chains and a resilient source. Overall, the results obtained from the 3 HOALs/agricultural facility showing the presence of dominant clones in compartments associated with the pig production unit suggest a transmission chain involving these animals. They contribute to unveiling the role played by animal and environmental reservoirs within the C. difficile epidemiology.

Abstract

Human, animal, and environmental health are increasingly threatened by the emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance. Inappropriate use of antibiotic treatments commonly contributes to this threat, but it is also becoming apparent that multiple, interconnected environmental factors can play a significant role. Thus, a One Health approach is required for a comprehensive understanding of the environmental dimensions of antibiotic resistance and inform science-based decisions and actions. The broad and multidisciplinary nature of the problem poses several open questions drawing upon a wide heterogeneous range of studies.
