Abstract

Springtails (Collembola) inhabit soils from the Arctic to the Antarctic and comprise an estimated ~32% of all terrestrial arthropods on Earth. Here, we present a global, spatially-explicit database on springtail communities that includes 249,912 occurrences from 44,999 samples and 2,990 sites. These data are mainly raw sample-level records at the species level collected predominantly from private archives of the authors that were quality-controlled and taxonomically-standardised. Despite covering all continents, most of the sample-level data come from the European continent (82.5% of all samples) and represent four habitats: woodlands (57.4%), grasslands (14.0%), agrosystems (13.7%) and scrublands (9.0%). We included sampling by soil layers, and across seasons and years, representing temporal and spatial within-site variation in springtail communities. We also provided data use and sharing guidelines and R code to facilitate the use of the database by other researchers. This data paper describes a static version of the database at the publication date, but the database will be further expanded to include underrepresented regions and linked with trait data.

Abstract

Edaphic collembola are abundant in agricultural soils and can be used as bioindicators of the condition of the soils they inhabit. We study the composition, diversity, and phenology of the collembola community in a peach orchard (Prunus persica (L.) Bach) located in Zitácuaro, Michoacán, Mexico. We evaluated the effect of physical and chemical characteristics of the orchard's soil on the edaphic collembola community. Collembola were extracted by Berlese funnels from samples of leaf litter and soil obtained monthly, from September 1993 to August 1994. Fallen leaves were not removed from the ground for the duration of the study. Sixty-nine species were registered: 58 in leaf litter and 53 in soil. Collembola density varied from 248 to 15,889 ind m-2 in leaf litter and 419 to 7,286 ind m-2 in soil. The layer of fallen leaves exhibited the highest density, species richness and diversity of collembola. The edaphic variables that altered collembola density were organic matter content, cationic exchange capacity (CEC) and carbon-tonitrogen ratio. Richness was affected by organic matter and total nitrogen. Diversity was affected by pH, total nitrogen, calcium, and carbon-to-nitrogen ratio. The density of dominant species was negatively affected by phosphorus and calcium content, as well as CEC. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Soil life supports the functioning and biodiversity of terrestrial ecosystems. Springtails (Collembola) are among the most abundant soil arthropods regulating soil fertility and flow of energy through above- and belowground food webs. However, the global distribution of springtail diversity and density, and how these relate to energy fluxes remains unknown. Here, using a global dataset representing 2470 sites, we estimate the total soil springtail biomass at 27.5 megatons carbon, which is threefold higher than wild terrestrial vertebrates, and record peak densities up to 2 million individuals per square meter in the tundra. Despite a 20-fold biomass difference between the tundra and the tropics, springtail energy use (community metabolism) remains similar across the latitudinal gradient, owing to the changes in temperature with latitude. Neither springtail density nor community metabolism is predicted by local species richness, which is high in the tropics, but comparably high in some temperate forests and even tundra. Changes in springtail activity may emerge from latitudinal gradients in temperature, predation and resource limitation in soil communities. Contrasting relationships of biomass, diversity and activity of springtail communities with temperature suggest that climate warming will alter fundamental soil biodiversity metrics in different directions, potentially restructuring terrestrial food webs and affecting soil functioning.

A number of conservation and management actions have been implemented to control deforestation and the illegal pet trade in the Caldas department of Colombia in the range of the white-footed tamarin Oedipomidas leucopus1 (Vulnerable A4cd), and we have have monitored their population densities to evaluate the effectiveness of these interventions. Localities in different vegetation composition and management regimes were selected for population monitoring, using the estimated population of the silvery-brown tamarin as an indicator. In 2021, new population density estimates were obtained and compared with previous estimates from 2006–2008 and 2015. In this recent re-surveying, population densities found in the eastern Caldas region were between 18 and 129 individuals/km². No changes were found in four localities when compared to the previous surveys. In one locality there was an increase in population density from 76 to 129 ind/km². We were unable to survey one previously surveyed, so a new location was included. Our data suggest that measures to control the pet trade of this primate have been successful in this zone. We also evaluated population density differences in the distinct ecosystems: humid lowland forest; humid sub-Andean Forest, and humid lowland secondary vegetation. 32. Neotropical Cyphoderus(Collembola: Paronellidae), with Comments About Myrmecophily and the Description of New Species

Abstract

In this contribution, supplementary descriptions of Cyphoderus innominatusMills, 1938 and C. limboxiphius nitricolaRapoport & Izarra, 1962 are provided; and three new species are described: C. adversussp. nov., C. amazonicussp. nov., and C. parafolsomisp. nov.; chaetotaxy for all of them is included. The new species have a labial triangular field with a1–5, m, e, l1smooth chaetae, and l2as reduced spine, but C. adversussp. nov.is characterized by a trochateral organ with at least 9 spine-like chaetae; tenent hair capitate; colophore chaeta Dmic, lateral flap chaetae with uneven length; dens with De1–De6/Di1–Di6feathered chaetae; mucro only with a, while C. amazonicussp. nov.is differentiated by a trochateral organ with at least 16 spine-like chaetae; tenent hair acuminate; colophore chaeta Dmac, lateral flap chaetae small and subequal; dens with De1–De6/Di1–Di5feathered chaetae; mucro with aA. Cyphoderus parafolsomisp. nov.has trochateral organ with more than 14 spine-like chaetae; unguis with 1 unpaired internal tooth; tenent hair capitate; dens with De1–De6/Di1–Di5feathered chaetae; mucro with aA. A key for identification of the Neotropical species is provided. Also, the paper describes the information about the association of Cyphoderuswith different ant species, and a new taxonomic status for C. nitricola(Rapoport & Izarra, 1962) comb. nov.

Abstract

Livestock in semi-arid areas such as the province of Santa Elena has ancestral management with deficiencies in animal nutrition, which economically affects small farmers or livestock producers, especially in the dry season. This type of production is not considered a profitable business, but rather as a subsistence activity. Feeding problems and incipient handling of the animals prevent them from gaining weight for meat or producing more milk. The objective of this research was to predict the daily production of meat and milk in cattle from energy estimates of forage species using mathematical formulas, to estimate the necessary amount of fresh forage (kg) that is needed to cover the total energy requirements of the animal. The results of the bromatological analysis in the specific conditions of the province of Santa Elena determined the tree species Caesalpinia glabatra with the highest% of dry matter, Leucaena leucocephala and Moringa oleifera with the highest protein values. The energy value calculated for Moringa oleifera, Leucaena leucocephala and Caesalpinia glabatra presented moringa as the species that contributes the highest energy value to cattle. The energy estimates that fresh forage and dry matter produce in catle, for Moringa oleifera, the highest amount of kg/meat/day and the highest amount of l/milk/day. The Caesalpinia glabatra species proved to be the forage species with the highest yield and animal load in adult bovine units per hectare. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
