Based on a sample of approximately 500,000 hadronic Z0 decays accumulated between 1993 and 1998, the SLD experiment has set limits on 24 fully charged two-body and quasi two-body exclusive charmless hadronic decays of B+, B0, and B0_s mesons. The precise tracking capabilities of the SLD detector provided for the efficient reduction of combinatoric backgrounds, yielding the most precise available limits for ten of these modes., Comment: LaTex, 11 pages, 2 figures, uses RevTeX. This version contains minor changes suggested by Phys Rev D reviewers. Previous version was the original resubmission to Physical Review D, Rapid Communications, after rejection from Physical Review Letters. The previous version incorporated a number of changes suggested by Phys. Rev. Lett. referees, including additional clarifying text and figures, as well as a consideration of the possible effects of vector polarization in vector-vector decay modes

- Abstract
The parity violation parameters Ab and Ac of the Zbb ̄ and Zcc ̄ couplings have been measured directly, using the polar angle dependence of the Z0-pole polarized cross sections. Bottom and charmed hadrons were tagged via semileptonic decays. Both the muon and electron identification algorithms take advantage of new multivariate techniques, incorporating for the first time information from the SLD Čerenkov Ring Imaging Detector. Based on the 1993–1995 SLD sample of 150 000 Z0 decays produced with highly polarized electron beams, we measure Ab=0.910±0.068(stat)±0.037(syst), Ac=0.642±0.110(stat)±0.063(syst).

- Abstract
We present a direct measurement of the parity-violating asymmetry Ab in the Z0 to bb̄ coupling using a new technique to distinguish the b and b̄ quarks using charged kaons from B decays. The Z0 bosons are produced in e+ē collisions at the SLC with longitudinally polarized electrons. bb̄ events are selected using a secondary vertex mass tag and Ab is determined from the left-right forward-backward asymmetry. From the 1994–1995 data sample, selected from 100 000 hadronic Z0 decays, we obtain Ab = 0.855 ± 0.088stat ± 0.102syst.

- Abstract
We present a direct measurement of the parity-violation parameter Ab using a self-calibrating track-charge technique. In the SLAC Linear Collider Large Detector (SLD) experiment we observe hadronic decays of Z0 bosons produced in collisions between longitudinally polarized electrons and unpolarized positrons at the SLAC Linear Collider. A sample of bb events is selected using the topologically reconstructed mass of B hadrons. From our 1993–1995 sample of approximately 150 000 hadronic Z0 decays we obtain Ab = 0.911 ± 0.045(stat)±0.045(syst).

Physics - Abstract
The parity violation parameters Ab and Ac of the Zbb¯ and Zcc¯ couplings have been measured directly, using the polar angle dependence of the Z0-pole polarized cross sections.

Endothelial function after coronary angioplasty (PTCA) has been evaluated by quantitative coronary angiography in 18 patients with no evidence of significant restenosis at routine angiographic followup. Increasing doses of acetylcholine (Ach) were infused in the dilated coronary artery, followed by a 250 mu g bolus of nitroglycerin. Total PTCA segments examined were 21. The PTCA treated vessels showed abnormal response to Ach in all their segments. This vasoconstriction was more evident not only at the site of previous maximal stenosis but also in normal vascular sites stretched by the balloon. Vascular response to Ach suggests that endothelial function of neointima is impaired late after PTCA. >

It is not clear whether the ST-segment elevation in the infarct zone during an exercise stress test is caused by expansion of the necrotic area or by ischemia. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of restoring blood flow of the infarct-related coronary artery by successful coronary angioplasty in patients with silent exercise-induced ST-segment elevation in the leads corresponding to a recent ( >

In performing coronary angioplasty, the choice of the appropriate size of the balloon catheter is crucial for the success of the dilation. In case of significant tapering of the vessel to be dilated it has been suggested the use of tapered balloon to improve the results. In 187 lesions a significant anterograde taper was present in 179 and reverse taper was present in 8. The vessel taper affected the immediate results of angioplasty, performed by conventional cylindrical balloons: the stenosis was significantly lower in lesions with minor tapering (p=0.01). At follow-up, no correlation was observed between the degree of taper and the percentage of stenosis. >

To study the time-course of myocardial perfusion after coronary angioplasty, electrocardiogram (ECG)-gated coronary angiography was performed before, immediately after, and 24 hours after successful dilatation of 22 isolated left anterior descending coronary arteries. Minimal cross-sectional areas before, immediately after, and 24 hours after percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) were 0.59+or-0.46 mm/sup 2/, 3.05+or-1.17 mm/sup 2/, and 2.88+or-1.42 mm/sup 2/ respectively. At the same time, myocardial blood flow at maximal hyperemia, expressed as 1/mean transit time, improved in all patients (from 0.14+or-0.05 a/s to 0.20+or-0.07 a/s, p >

Coronary artery stents have emerged as the most promising device for coronary interventions. The outcome of coronary stenting depends on postprocedural lumen diameter. The aim of the study was to compare two angiographic methods for the quantitation of minimal luminal diameter (MLD) before and after implant of 126 coronary stents. Before angioplasty, the MLD measured by the two techniques correlated (r=0.706) and the mean difference was -0.47/spl plusmn/0.43 mm). After stent implant, the correlation coefficient increased to 0.782 and the mean difference decreases to -0.21/spl plusmn/0.50 mm. Thus both methods are appropriate to measure MLD in coronary segments, but the correlation is higher when the vascular conduit is remodelled by an endovascular prosthesis.

We present an improved comparison of the strong coupling of the gluon to light (q_l=u+d+s), c, and b quarks, determined from multijet rates in flavor-tagged samples of hadronic Z0 decays recorded with the SLC Large Detector at the SLAC Linear Collider between 1993 and 1995. Flavor separation among primary q_l q_l-bar, c c-bar, and b b-bar final states was made on the basis of the reconstructed mass of long-lived heavy-hadron decay vertices, yielding tags with high purity and low bias against >= 3-jet final states. We find alpha_s^c/alpha_s^uds = 1.036+-0.043 (stat) +0.041-0.045 (syst) +0.020-0.018 (theory) and alpha_s^b/alpha_s^uds = 1.004+-0.018 (stat) +0.026-0.031 (syst) +0.018-0.029 (theory)., 38 pages latex including 8 embedded eps figures

The formation of an aneurysm (An) of the left ventricle (LV) is a not infrequent complication of a myocardial infarction, with an incidence between 3% and 38% (average 15%) [1–3]. LV An is identified on contrast cineangiography as a thinned and dilated portion with akinetic or dyskinetic contraction pattern [4,5]. Early diagnosis is important for the management of this disease, since surgical treatment of postinfarction LV An is now a well-established procedure [3,4,6–9]. However, the effect of scar resection on functional recovery of cardiac performance and on long-term survival is still controversial. Among the surgical techniques aimed to improve results, Jatene [10] recently proposed a method of reconstruction in order to (1) restore the normal size and shape of the LV cavity, (2) reduce the workload of the residual myocardium, and (3) improve the function of tissue adjacent to resected scar.

LACIDIPINE , *CALCIUM antagonists , *CORONARY disease , *ANGINA pectoris - Abstract
Background: The calcium antagonist lacidipine has been shown to be highly vasoselective and to improve myocardial perfusion in hypertensive patients. However, its effects on coronary artery vasomotility and on post-stenotic coronary flow reserve in patients with atherosclerotic heart disease are unknown. Objectives: This study was designed to investigate the acute direct effects of repeated infusions of lacidipine on epicardial coronary artery vasomotion and on post-stenotic coronary artery blood flow in patients with stable angina pectoris and angiographic evidence of coronary heart disease. Methods: In 8 patients with stable angina and moderate to severe stenosis of the left coronary artery, measurements of epicardial dimensions (quantitative angiography) and of coronary blood flow (Doppler guidewire) distal to a stenosis were performed at baseline and after 3 repeated intracoronary boluses of 12µg of lacidipine. Results were compared with those obtained after 10mg of intracoronary papaverine. Results: The intracoronary administration of lacidipine was well tolerated, without any adverse effects. Lacidipine significantly increased the minimal luminal diameter of the lesion (peak relative increase of 43.7%), without significant changes in heart rate and systolic aortic pressure. Intracoronary lacidipine caused a dose-dependent increase in coronary flow reserve. Maximal vasodilatory effects were equivalent to those obtained with intracoronary papaverine. Conclusions: These results suggest that lacidipine acts directly as a potent vasodilator in stenotic epicardial vessels and improves myocardial perfusion distal to a moderately severe stenosis in patients with stable angina. - Abstract
The feasibility and safety of percutaneous versus surgical intra-aortic balloon pumping (IABP) in the elderly were evaluated in 45 patients who were over 65 years of age (range 65–79). All the patients required counterpulsation for complicated acute myocardial infarction. IABP insertion was attempted by the surgical technique in 22 patients, while the percutaneous approach was performed in 23. A consistent improvement in the incidence rale of successful insertion was attained with the use of the percutaneous technique as compared with the surgical one (91.3% v. 59.1%, P<005). Furthermore, no major complication was observed with the percutaneous catheter, while a 9.1% (2/22) incidence rate of serious complications was reported with the surgical technique. Thus, percutaneous IABP substantially decreased the unsuccessful insertions and the risk of severe complications in old patients, despite presumably severe aorto-iliac disease. No specifically age-related technical problem seems, therefore, to limit the applicability of intra-aortic counterpulsation to elderly patients, when percutaneous IABP is employed. - Abstract
The effectiveness of intraaortic balloon counterpulsation (IABP) in the elderly was evaluated in a group of 63 patients with acute myocardial infarction (AMI) complicated by refractory left ventricular failure (LVF, = 16), cardiogenic shock (CS, = 32) or acute ventricular septal defect (VSD, = 15). The mean age was 61 years (range: 32–78 years); 35 patients were under and 28 over the age of 65. Failures of insertion of the IABP catheter were significantly more frequent in the elderly (37.5 v. 11.4%, <0.05). The rate of major complications, which was 12.7% in the whole series, did not significantly differ between the two age groups. Patients with medical indications for IABP (LVF, CS) had an overall in-hospital mortality of 68.8%: no difference was observed between young (67.7%) and elderly (70.6%) patients. In elderly patients with VSD, IABP was ineffective even when reparative surgery could be performed. Haemodynamic effects of IABP were evaluated in 32 medical patients who survived the 4th hour of treatment. All haemodynamic parameters improved in the early phase of pumping (within 4h) except cardiac index and total systemic resistance, which were significantly modified after 12 and 24 h of treatment, respectively. An early improvement in stroke index proved to be predictive of survival. No haemodynamic difference was found between the age groups either in the early or in the late phase of cardiocirculatory mechanical assistance. Fifteen patients (10 CS, 3 LVF, 2 VSD) were discharged from the hospital and 14 were long-term survivors (more than 60 days). It was concluded that age cannot be considered as a contraindication to IABP during complicated AMI, since the only difference between the two age groups consisted in a higher rate of failure in introducing the catheter in the elderly. We present a direct measurement of the parity-violation parameter Ab, using a self-calibrating track-charge technique. In the SLAC Linear Collider Large Detector (SLD) experiment we observe hadronic decays of Z0 bosons produced in collisions between longitudinally polarized electrons and unpolarized positrons at the SLAC Linear Collider. A sample of bb̄ events is selected using the topologically reconstructed mass of B hadrons. From our 1993-1995 sample of approximately 150000 hadronic Z0 decays, we obtain Ab = 0.911 ± 0.045(stat) ± 0.045(syst).

We present a direct measurement of the_parity-violating asymmetry Ab, in the Z0 to bb̄ coupling using a new technique to distinguish the b and b̄ quarks using charged kaons from B decays. The Z0 bosons are produced in e+e- collisions at the SLC with longitudinally polarized electrons, bb̄ events are selected using a secondary vertex mass tag and Ab is determined from the left-right forward-backward asymmetry. From the 1994-1995 data sample, selected from 100000 hadronic Z0 decays, we obtain Ab = 0.855 ± 0.088stal ± 0.102syst. © 1999 The American Physical Society.

High Energy Physics::Experiment - Abstract
The structure of e+e-→bb̄g events was studied using Z0 decays recorded in the SLC Large Detector experiment at SLAC. Three-jet final states were selected and the charge-coupled device-based vertex detector was used to identify two of the jets as b or b. Distributions of the gluon energy and polar angle were measured over the full kinematic range for the first time, and compared with perturbative QCD predictions. The energy distribution is potentially sensitive to an anomalous b chromomagnetic moment κ. We measured κ to be consistent with zero and set the first limits on its value: -0.17

We have measured the differential production cross sections as a function of scaled momentum xp=2p/Ec.m. of the identified hadron species π+, K+, K0, K*0, φ, p, Λ0, and of the corresponding antihadron species in inclusive hadronic Z0 decays, as well as separately for Z0 decays into light (u, d, s), c and b flavors. Clear flavor dependences are observed, consistent with expectations based upon previously measured production and decay properties of heavy hadrons. These results were used to test the QCD predictions of Gribov and Lipatov, the predictions of QCD in the modified leading logarithm approximation with the ansatz of local parton-hadron duality, and the predictions of three fragmentation models. The ratios of production of different hadron species were also measured as a function of xp and were used to study the suppression of strange meson, strange and non-strange baryon, and vector meson production in the jet fragmentation process. The light-flavor results provide improved tests of the above predictions, as they remove the contribution of heavy hadron production and decay from that of the rest of the fragmentation process. In addition we have compared hadron and antihadron production as a function of xp in light quark (as opposed to antiquark) jets. Differences are observed at high xp, providing direct evidence that higher-momentum hadrons are more likely to contain a primary quark or antiquark. The differences for pseudoscalar and vector kaons provide new measurements of strangeness suppression for high-xp fragmentation products. ©1999 The American Physical Society.
