1. A Coalitional Game for Demand-Side Management in a Low-Voltage Resistive Micro-Grid with Multiple Electricity Retailers

Abstract

An existing challenge in power systems is the implementation of optimal demand management through dynamic pricing. This paper encompasses the design, analysis and implementation of a novel on-line pricing scheme based on coalitional game theory. The setting consists of a network with multiple energy retailers competing to attract consumers by announcing a price in a hierarchical leader-follower structure. The process of coalition formation under such a pricing scheme can be viewed as a game for which we show that a Stackelberg equilibrium exists, \ie given a price, consumers will respond by conforming to a reciprocal power consumption quantity. We propose a coalition formation algorithm and perform a game-theoretic stability analysis on the resulting coalitions. We integrate the pricing setting with a resistive micro-grid dynamic model. In this context we analyse the behaviour of the integrated system, bridging the gap between market and physical layers of the problem. Simulations provide a comparison of profits generated by the proposed scheme against a more traditional single retailer scheme, while simultaneously showing convergence towards a steady-state equilibrium. Additionally, we shed light into the system's physical response when subject to our proposed pricing scheme.

6. $2$-polarity and algorithmic aspects of polarity variants on cograph superclasses

Abstract

A graph $G$ is said to be an $(s, k)$-polar graph if its vertex set admits a partition $(A, B)$ such that $A$ and $B$ induce, respectively, a complete $s$-partite graph and the disjoint union of at most $k$ complete graphs. Polar graphs and monopolar graphs are defined as $(\infty, \infty)$- and $(1, \infty)$-polar graphs, respectively, and unipolar graphs are those graphs with a polar partition $(A, B)$ such that $A$ is a clique. The problems of deciding whether an arbitrary graph is a polar graph or a monopolar graph are known to be NP-complete. In contrast, deciding whether a graph is a unipolar graph can be done in polynomial time. In this work we prove that the three previous problems can be solved in linear time on the classes of $P_4$-sparse and $P_4$-extendible graphs, generalizing analogous results previously known for cographs. Additionally, we provide finite forbidden subgraph characterizations for $(2,2)$-polar graphs on $P_4$-sparse and $P_4$-extendible graphs, also generalizing analogous results recently obtained for the class of cographs., Comment: 30 pages, 14 figures

Abstract

It is known that every hereditary property can be characterized by finitely many minimal obstructions when restricted to either the class of cographs or the class of $P_4$-reducible graphs. In this work, we prove that also when restricted to the classes of $P_4$-sparse graphs and $P_4$-extendible graphs (both of which extend $P_4$-reducible graphs) every hereditary property can be characterized by finitely many minimal obstructions. We present complete lists of $P_4$-sparse and $P_4$-extendible minimal obstructions for polarity, monopolarity, unipolarity, and $(s,1)$-polarity, where $s$ is a positive integer. In parallel to the case of $P_4$-reducible graphs, all the $P_4$-sparse minimal obstructions for these hereditary properties are cographs., Comment: 29 pages, 8 figures

10. Stability analysis for the implementation of game theory-based on-line pricing schemes in micro-grids

Abstract

An existing challenge in power systems is the implementation of optimal demand management through dynamic pricing. This research project deals with on-line pricing schemes for electricity in micro-grid network systems and the ways in which their implementation affects the physical system's response. Two approaches were devised in this study: First, the ways in which micro-grid networks can be modelled as less prescriptive multi-agent consensus systems; examining their response under uncertainties and gaining insights on the relation between the network topology, the heterogeneous parameters of its components, and the system's response. Secondly, deriving game-theoretic novel pricing schemes and integrating them with the physical system model to perform a stability analysis. The proposed schemes consider the rational behaviour of the end-users and the entailing tension with the energy supplier(s); demonstrating the ways in which the decisions of the players involved influence the physical system. The study aims to clarify the interconnection between the market and physical layers of the problem, leading to a better future implementation of such schemes. The first part of this thesis studies networks of heterogeneous micro-grids, treating them as agents and modelling their dynamics as an averaging process that is subject to uncertain non-linear parameters. The second part introduces a pricing scheme based on the Stackelberg game with incentive strategies in a micro-grid, where the leader is the energy supplier, and the follower the consumer. The scheme is then improved and carried out in a droop-controlled low-voltage resistive AC micro-grid. The final part of this research is about the design of a scheme based on coalitional game theory, where there are multiple competing energy retailers attracting consumers. For all the propositions above, analysis and simulations that illustrate system stability, agent rationality, profit improvement, and the convergence to different equilibria in the physical and market responses are implemented.

Abstract

BackgroundAlthough Latinos, African-Americans, and American Indians/Alaska Natives comprise 34% of Americans, these under-represented minorities (URMs) account for only 7% of US medical-school faculty. Even when URMs become faculty, they face many substantial challenges to success. Little has been published, however, on keys to academic success for URM young faculty investigators.MethodsThe Research in Academic Pediatrics Initiative on Diversity (RAPID) goal is to enhance the professional advancement of URM junior faculty pursuing research careers in general academic pediatrics. One important RAPID component is the annual mentoring/career-development conference, which targets URM residents, fellows, and junior faculty, and has included 62 URM participants since its 2013 inception. A conference highlight is the panel discussion on keys to academic success for URM young investigators, conducted by the RAPID National Advisory Committee, a diverse group of leading senior researchers. The article aim was to provide a guide to academic success for URM young investigators using the 2018 RAPID Conference panel discussion. A modified Delphi technique was used to provide a systematic approach to obtaining answers to six key questions using an expert panel: the single most important key to success for URM young investigators; ensuring optimal mentorship; how to respond when patients/families say, "I don't want you to see my child because you are ____"; best strategies for maximizing funding success; how to balance serving on time-consuming committees with enough time to advance research/career objectives; and the single thing you wish someone had told you which would have substantially enhanced your success early on.Results/conclusionsThis is the first published practical guide on keys to academic success for URM young investigators. Identified keys to success included having multiple mentors, writing prolifically, being tenaciously persistent, having mentors who are invested in you, dealing with families who do not want you to care for their child because of your race/ethnicity by seeking to understand the reasons and debriefing with colleagues, seeking non-traditional funding streams, balancing committee work with having enough time to advance one's research and career by using these opportunities to generate scholarly products, and asking for all needed resources when negotiating for new jobs.

Abstract

Maize (Zea mays L.), which is considered an important cereal everywhere, is widely cultivated in different agroecological conditions. Throughout their phenological stages, maize crops are attacked by pests and diseases, and in Ecuador these phytosanitary problems are usually counteracted with applications of pesticides. However, knowledge of beneficial entomofauna is fundamental to guide pest management programs. As part of this objective, the Coccinellidae species present in maize fields in localities (Santa Ana, Colon, and Danzarin) in Manabí province were identified. In each zone, maize plants were sampled from 2018–2019. A total of 2,654 specimens belonging to 14 taxa were collected in this study, of which Cheilomenes sexmaculata, Cycloneda sanguinea, Hippodamia convergens, Hyperaspis arida, and Psyllobora confluens were found in all the studied areas. Hyperaspis arida and Diomus apollonia are reported for the first time in Ecuador.

Abstract

This study examines the interconnection between beekeeping and modern productive systems, highlighting the economic relevance of this activity on a global and Latin American scale. Beekeeping, centered around honeybees, not only generates income but also plays a crucial role in biodiversity preservation and food security. In Latin America, beekeeping significantly contributes to employment, agricultural GDP, and income through the export of bee products. Despite its importance, it faces challenges such as habitat loss, pesticide exposure, and obstacles in international marketing. The theoretical framework addresses various economic perspectives, from division of labor to information economics, providing a comprehensive understanding of beekeeping complexity. Previous studies explore its impact in different geographical and socioeconomic contexts. The methodology relies on a detailed bibliographic review, analyzing existing literature on beekeeping interconnection. Results reveal deficiencies in beekeeping production in the Brazilian Amazon and unique experiences of beekeepers in family farming in Brazil and the Macizo Colombiano. The discussion highlights the need for further research, policies to stimulate bee product consumption, and a focus on hygiene-sanitation and financing areas. Beekeeping demonstrates a significant interconnection with productive systems, where efficient cost management and marketing strategies are key to improving profitability and competitiveness. In conclusion, the study advocates for a comprehensive understanding and a strategic approach to optimize the economic and sustainable potential of beekeeping., Este estudio examina la interconexión entre la apicultura y los sistemas productivos modernos, destacando la relevancia económica de esta actividad en el contexto global y latinoamericano. La apicultura, centrada en las abejas melíferas, no solo genera ingresos, sino que también desempeña un papel crucial en la preservación de la biodiversidad y la seguridad alimentaria. En Latinoamérica, la apicultura contribuye significativamente al empleo, al Producto Interno Bruto agrícola y a los ingresos a través de la exportación de productos apícolas. A pesar de su importancia, enfrenta desafíos como la pérdida de hábitat, exposición a pesticidas y obstáculos en la comercialización internacional. El marco teórico aborda diversas perspectivas económicas, desde la división del trabajo hasta la economía de la información, ofreciendo una comprensión integral de la complejidad de la apicultura. Estudios previos exploran su impacto en diferentes contextos geográficos y socioeconómicos. La metodología se basa en una revisión bibliográfica detallada, analizando la literatura existente sobre la interconexión apícola. Los resultados revelan deficiencias en la producción apícola en la Amazonía brasileña y experiencias singulares de apicultores en la agricultura familiar en Brasil y el Macizo Colombiano. La discusión destaca la necesidad de mayor investigación, políticas de estímulo al consumo de productos apícolas y enfoque en áreas higiénico-sanitarias y de financiamiento. The present investigation is based on the development of a manual for the proper storage of agrochemical products with inventory management, for this the classification is detailed according to the irrigation and management of pesticides, be they insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, as well as the storage according to the type of state, whether solid or liquid, and according to the color of the label (red, yellow, blue and green), which is ordered from the color that represents being toxic to the product that normally does not offer danger, also good storage practices according to its content and packaging capacity, which highlights the location, ventilation, signage, infrastructure, proper stacking of the product, biosafety standards according to the Agrocalidad regime. Furthermore, within this document you can find management of empty containers and waste management regulations in favor of the environment. The adequate storage of agrochemicals is essential for the development and sustainability of human life and habitat in general. The correct and precise use of an inventory will allow for better control of these agrochemical inputs that are of vital importance for the agro-productive market at the level. micro and macro., La presente investigación se basa en la elaboración de un manual para el almacenamiento adecuado de productos agroquímicos con el manejo de inventario, para ello se detalla la clasificación según los riegos y manejo de los plaguicidas, sean estos insecticidas, herbicidas, fungicidas, así mismo el almacenamiento de acuerdo al tipo de estado sea solidos o líquidos y de acuerdo al color de la etiqueta (rojo, amarillo, azul y verde) la misma que se encuentra ordenada del color que representa ser tóxico hasta  el producto que normalmente no ofrece peligro, también las buenas prácticas de almacenado según su contenido y capacidad de envase, en la que se resalta la ubicación, ventilación, señalización, infraestructura, apilamiento adecuado del producto,  normas de bioseguridad según régimen de Agrocalidad. Además, dentro de este documento se puede encontrar manejo de envases vacíos y normativas de manejos de residuos en favor del medio ambiente. El almacenamiento adecuado de agroquímicos es fundamental para el desarrollo y sostenibilidad de la vida humana y el hábitat en general, el correcto y preciso empleo de un inventario permitirá tener mejor control de estos insumos agroquímicos que son de vital importancia para el mercado agro productivo a nivel micro y macro.

Abstract

This research article focuses on the characterization of Arabica coffee oil extracted using the Soxhlet method in which the composition, physical properties and potential applications of the oil obtained will be explored. From this process a product is obtained: coffee oil. For this process, properly dried and roasted coffee beans are used. This research seeks to understand the properties and potential applications of coffee oil, being a product derived from the beans of the coffea arabica plant. These results will provide valuable information about the quality and characteristics of said oil, which may be relevant for its use in the food, cosmetic or pharmaceutical industry. The study analyzes the quality of the oil in terms of fatty acid and antioxidant content. The results show the unique characteristics of Arabica coffee oil and its potential use in the food, cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries., El presente artículo de investigación se centra en la caracterización del aceite de café arábiga extraído mediante el método Soxhlet en el cual se explorará la composición, las propiedades físicas y las aplicaciones potenciales del aceite obtenido. De este proceso se obtienen un producto: el aceite de café. Para este proceso se utiliza granos de café secados y tostado adecuadamente, Esta investigación busca comprender las propiedades y aplicaciones potenciales del aceite de café siendo un producto derivado de los granos de la planta coffea arábiga. Dichos resultados proporcionarán información valiosa sobre la calidad y las características de dicho aceite, que pueden ser relevantes para su uso en la industria alimentaria, cosmética o farmacéutica. El estudio analiza la calidad del aceite en términos de contenido de ácidos grasos y antioxidantes. The following work presents the process of extracting annatto oil using the Soxhlet method. In this process, a product is obtained: annatto oil. Dried annatto seeds are used for this process. This research seeks to understand the properties and potential applications of annatto oil, a product derived from the seeds of the Bixa Orellana plant. The results will provide valuable information on the quality and characteristics of the oil, which may be relevant for its use in the food, cosmetic or pharmaceutical industry. When extracting the oil, a significant part of the content, which varies depending on the extraction method used. This is how a fixed oil with a high volatile load is obtained, which has favorable organoleptic characteristics. The main objective is to understand the properties of annatto oil. 32. Agronomic evaluation of guayusa (Ilex guayusa L.) cultivation in the Quinindé.

Abstract

The main objective of this study is to analyze the agronomic performance of the guayusa crop (Ilex guayusa Loes.) during its nursery stage in the Quinindé canton. To achieve this goal, measurements of key parameters,  leaf count, and average seedling size, were carried out through asexual reproduction methods, specifically layering and suckers. These data provided valuable information to determine the viability of guayusa planting in this region, considering its specific characteristics. Exhaustive investigations were carried out on the use, planting and adaptability of guayusa in areas with climatic conditions similar to those of the Quinindé canton. In this way, the results obtained revealed that the seedlings obtained by layering presented an average height of 13.04 cm at the beginning of the first month, increasing significantly to 28.32 cm at the end of the sixth month. In terms of number of leaves, an average of 7.4 leaves was recorded in the first month, rising to 18.16 leaves at the end of the sixth month. On the other hand, the seedlings generated from suckers exhibited an initial height of 18.92 cm in the first month, experiencing substantial growth until reaching 41.92 cm in the sixth month. Regarding the number of leaves, an average of 7.4 leaves was observed at the beginning of the first month, increasing to 14.2 leaves at the end of the sixth month. The results obtained suggest the feasibility of planting guayusa in the studied region., Este estudio tiene como objetivo primordial analizar el desempeño agronómico del cultivo de guayusa (Ilex guayusa Loes.) durante su etapa de vivero en el cantón Quinindé. Para alcanzar esta meta, se llevó a cabo mediciones de parámetros clave, el recuento de hojas y el tamaño promedio de las plántulas a través de métodos de reproducción asexual, específicamente acodos y chupones. Estos datos proporciono información valiosa para determinar la viabilidad de la siembra de guayusa en esta región, considerando sus características específicas. Se llevó a cabo investigaciones exhaustivas acerca del uso, la siembra y la adaptabilidad de la guayusa en áreas con condiciones climáticas análogas a las del cantón Quinindé. De esta forma los resultados obtenidos revelaron que las plántulas obtenidas mediante acodos presento una altura promedio de 13.04 cm al inicio del primer mes, aumentando significativamente a 28.32 cm al concluir el sexto mes. En términos de número de hojas, se registró un promedio de 7.4 hojas en el primer mes, elevándose a 18.16 hojas al finalizar el estudio. Por otro lado, las plántulas generadas a partir de chupones exhibieron una altura inicial de 18.92 cm en el primer mes, experimentando un crecimiento substancial hasta alcanzar 41.92 cm en el sexto mes. En relación al número de hojas, se observó un promedio de 7.4 hojas al inicio del primer mes, incrementándose a 14.2 hojas al culminar el sexto mes. Los resultados obtenidos sugieren la factibilidad de la siembra de guayusa en la región estudiada.

Abstract

Phenotypic variability is a successful strategy in lichens for colonizing different habitats. Vagrancy has been reported as a specific adaptation for lichens living in steppe habitats around the world. Among the facultatively vagrant species, the cosmopolitan Cetraria aculeata apparently forms extremely modified vagrant thalli in steppe habitats of Central Spain. The aim of this study was to investigate whether these changes are phenotypic plasticity (a single genotype producing different phenotypes), by characterizing the anatomical and ultrastructural changes observed in vagrant morphs, and measuring differences in ecophysiological performance. Methods Specimens of vagrant and attached populations of C. aculeata were collected on the steppes of Central Spain. The fungal internal transcribed spacer (ITS), glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPD) and the large sub-unit of the mitochondrial ribosomal DNA (mtLSUm), and the algal ITS and actin were studied within a population genetics framework. Semi-thin and ultrathin sections were analysed by means of optical, scanning electron and transmission electron microscopy. Gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence were used to compare the physiological performance of both morphs. Key Results and Conclusions Vagrant and attached morphs share multilocus haplotypes which may indicate that they belong to the same species in spite of their completely different anatomy. However, differentiation tests suggested that vagrant specimens do not represent a random sub-set of the surrounding population. The morphological differences were related to anatomical and ultrastructural differences. Large intercalary growth rates of thalli after the loss of the basal–apical thallus polarity may be the cause of the increased growth shown by vagrant specimens. The anatomical and morphological changes lead to greater duration of ecophysiological activity in vagrant specimens. Abstract

The MAPK signaling pathway with BRAF mutations has been shown to drive the pathogenesis of 40–60% of melanomas. Inhibitors of this pathway's BRAF and MEK components are currently used to treat these malignancies. However, responses to these treatments are not always successful. Therefore, identifying noninvasive biomarkers to predict treatment responses is essential for personalized medicine in melanoma. Using noninvasive 1H magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H MRS), we previously showed that BRAF inhibition reduces lactate and alanine tumor levels in the early stages of effective therapy and could be considered as metabolic imaging biomarkers for drug response. The present work demonstrates that these metabolic changes observed by 1H MRS and those assessed by 31P MRS are also found in preclinical human melanoma models treated with MEK inhibitors. Apart from 1H and 31P MRS, additional supporting in vitro biochemical analyses are described. Our results indicate significant early metabolic correlations with response levels to MEK inhibition in the melanoma models and are consistent with our previous study of BRAF inhibition. Given these results, our study supports the potential clinical utility of noninvasive MRS to objectively image metabolic biomarkers for the early prediction of melanoma's response to MEK inhibition. Abstract

ImportanceMedical errors and adverse events (AEs) are common among hospitalized children. While clinician reports are the foundation of operational hospital safety surveillance and a key component of multifaceted research surveillance, patient and family reports are not routinely gathered. We hypothesized that a novel family-reporting mechanism would improve incident detection.ObjectiveTo compare error and AE rates (1) gathered systematically with vs without family reporting, (2) reported by families vs clinicians, and (3) reported by families vs hospital incident reports.Design, setting, and participantsWe conducted a prospective cohort study including the parents/caregivers of 989 hospitalized patients 17 years and younger (total 3902 patient-days) and their clinicians from December 2014 to July 2015 in 4 US pediatric centers. Clinician abstractors identified potential errors and AEs by reviewing medical records, hospital incident reports, and clinician reports as well as weekly and discharge Family Safety Interviews (FSIs). Two physicians reviewed and independently categorized all incidents, rating severity and preventability (agreement, 68%-90%; κ, 0.50-0.68). Discordant categorizations were reconciled. Rates were generated using Poisson regression estimated via generalized estimating equations to account for repeated measures on the same patient.Main outcomes and measuresError and AE rates.ResultsOverall, 746 parents/caregivers consented for the study. Of these, 717 completed FSIs. Their median (interquartile range) age was 32.5 (26-40) years; 380 (53.0%) were nonwhite, 566 (78.9%) were female, 603 (84.1%) were English speaking, and 380 (53.0%) had attended college. Of 717 parents/caregivers completing FSIs, 185 (25.8%) reported a total of 255 incidents, which were classified as 132 safety concerns (51.8%), 102 nonsafety-related quality concerns (40.0%), and 21 other concerns (8.2%). These included 22 preventable AEs (8.6%), 17 nonharmful medical errors (6.7%), and 11 nonpreventable AEs (4.3%) on the study unit. In total, 179 errors and 113 AEs were identified from all sources. Family reports included 8 otherwise unidentified AEs, including 7 preventable AEs. Error rates with family reporting (45.9 per 1000 patient-days) were 1.2-fold (95% CI, 1.1-1.2) higher than rates without family reporting (39.7 per 1000 patient-days). Adverse event rates with family reporting (28.7 per 1000 patient-days) were 1.1-fold (95% CI, 1.0-1.2; P = .006) higher than rates without (26.1 per 1000 patient-days). Families and clinicians reported similar rates of errors (10.0 vs 12.8 per 1000 patient-days; relative rate, 0.8; 95% CI, .5-1.2) and AEs (8.5 vs 6.2 per 1000 patient-days; relative rate, 1.4; 95% CI, 0.8-2.2). Family-reported error rates were 5.0-fold (95% CI, 1.9-13.0) higher and AE rates 2.9-fold (95% CI, 1.2-6.7) higher than hospital incident report rates.Conclusions and relevanceFamilies provide unique information about hospital safety and should be included in hospital safety surveillance in order to facilitate better design and assessment of interventions to improve safety.

Abstract

BackgroundThe number of racial/ethnic minority children will exceed the number of white children in the USA by 2018. Although 38% of Americans are minorities, only 12% of pediatricians, 5% of medical-school faculty, and 3% of medical-school professors are minorities. Furthermore, only 5% of all R01 applications for National Institutes of Health grants are from African-American, Latino, and American Indian investigators. Prompted by the persistent lack of diversity in the pediatric and biomedical research workforces, the Academic Pediatric Association Research in Academic Pediatrics Initiative on Diversity (RAPID) was initiated in 2012. RAPID targets applicants who are members of an underrepresented minority group (URM), disabled, or from a socially, culturally, economically, or educationally disadvantaged background. The program, which consists of both a research project and career and leadership development activities, includes an annual career-development and leadership conference which is open to any resident, fellow, or junior faculty member from an URM, disabled, or disadvantaged background who is interested in a career in academic general pediatrics.MethodsAs part of the annual RAPID conference, a Hot Topic Session is held in which the young investigators spend several hours developing a list of hot topics on the most useful faculty and career-development issues. These hot topics are then posed in the form of six "burning questions" to the RAPID National Advisory Committee (comprised of accomplished, nationally recognized senior investigators who are seasoned mentors), the RAPID Director and Co-Director, and the keynote speaker.Results/conclusionsThe six compelling questions posed by the 10 young investigators-along with the responses of the senior conference leadership-provide a unique resource and "survival guide" for ensuring the academic success and optimal career development of young investigators in academic pediatrics from diverse backgrounds. A rich conversation ensued on the topics addressed, consisting of negotiating for protected research time, career trajectories as academic institutions move away from an emphasis on tenure-track positions, how "non-academic" products fit into career development, racism and discrimination in academic medicine and how to address them, coping with isolation as a minority faculty member, and how best to mentor the next generation of academic physicians.
