6. Ibrutinib-Related Uveitis in Non-Hodgkin Lymphoma Patients: A Case Report and Literature Review.

Abstract

Purpose: To report two cases of ibrutinib-related uveitis and review the literature to date. Methods: We report two cases of ibrutinib-related uveitis using CARE guidelines and review the cases reported in the literature. Results: Case 1) A 55-year-old female with recurrent primary central nervous system lymphoma presented with bilateral decreased visual acuity, photophobia, and floaters that started one month after initiating oral treatment with ibrutinib. Chronic non-granulomatous bilateral anterior-intermediate uveitis with macular edema was identified. Secondary causes were ruled out, and a presumptive diagnosis of ibrutinib-related uveitis was made. Case 2) A 57-year-old female with Waldenström macroglobulinemia who was treated with ibrutinib for two years presented with bilateral blurred vision, photophobia, red eyes, and floaters. A diagnosis of non-granulomatous, noninfectious panuveitis with bilateral cystoid macular edema was made. Secondary causes were ruled out, and ibrutinib toxicity was the most likely cause. Conclusion: Ibrutinib-related uveitis is a novel and under-diagnosed clinical entity. The most frequent clinical presentation in the literature is bilateral, non-granulomatous, anterior, and intermediate uveitis. Macular edema is a frequent complication. Uveitis usually requires topical treatment and the suspension of ibrutinib. Switching to second-generation Bruton tyrosine kinase inhibitors is proposed as a potential therapeutic alternative. Abstract

We show that tunneling through quantum dots can be completely dominated by states quantized on stable bouncing-ball orbits. The fingerprints of bouncing-ball tunneling are sequences of Coulomb blockade peaks with strongly correlated peak height and asymmetric peak line shape. Our results are in agreement with the striking correlations of peak height and transmission phase found in recent interference experiments with quantum dots., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

11. Studies on the phenolic pungent principles in plants and cultures of Zingiber officinale Roscoe

Abstract

It was confirmed that the PPPs of ginger are present in the underground parts of the plant, chiefly in the rhizome, but these compounds also appear to a much lesser extent in the adventitious roots. The major constituents of this pungent fraction are a homologous series of [6]gingerol (4,8,10,12) and [6]shogaol (4,6,8). These secondary compounds occur together with flavonoid-like compounds and constituents of the essential oil of the spice in the yellow pigmented cells which are also storage locations for oil. It has been shown that a positive correlation exists between the number of these yellow cells and the amount of [6]gingerol. A range of culture systems was established in order to study the metabolism of these PPPs. Callus cultures, initiated from emerging axillary buds taken from the rhizome, displayed a number of coloured cells initially but the amount of PPPs per g fw declined sharply together with the number of coloured cells per section as the cultures aged. However, when the data were plotted in a per explant basis an increase was observed. Attempts to influence the production and accumulation of these secondary compounds in differentiating cultures (roots, shoots and plantlets) were partially successful. Generally, on a per g fw basis there was a similar response to that observed during callus induction in which there was a decrease in the amounts of PPPs and also in the number of yellow cells per section. Conversely when the amounts of PPPs were expressed per explant a clear increase was observed which was higher than that obtained during callus induction. Additionally, regenerated plants with mini-rhizomes contained higher amounts of these pungent principles suggesting that higher differentiated structures were necessary for a higher accumulation Studies with suspension cultures showed that in some instances the PPPs accumulated after the cessation of growth (20-30d) and were released into the medium; although in other cultures it was shown that these compounds were retained within the cells and appeared during the early stages of growth. Manipulation of the culture medium by the addition of glutamine did not prevent variation in culture pH, and failed to increase the amounts of [6]gingerol and related compounds. Increasing the concentration of sucrose in the culture medium depressed production of the PPPs. Attempts to boost production by the addition of sunflower oil to suspension cultures, to remove the PPPs from the medium, resulted in the appearance of detectable amounts of these compounds within the added sunflower oil. However, overall product yield was not increased. Conjugated forms of [6]gingerol and related compounds were produced in response to the addition of [6]gingerol to suspension cultures.

Abstract

Laboratory work assignments are very important for computer science learning. Over the last 12 years many students have been involved in solving such assignments in the authors' department, having reached a figure of more than 400 students doing the same assignment in the same year. This number of students has required teachers to pay special attention to conceivable plagiarism cases. A plagiarism detection tool has been developed as part of a full toolset for helping in the management of the laboratory work assignments. This tool defines and uses four similarity criteria to measure how similar two assignment implementations are. The paper describes the plagiarism detection tool and the experience of using it over the last 12 years in four different programming assignments, from microprogramming a CPU to system programming in C. Index Terms--Computer engineering learning, mass courses management, software plagiarism detection, string similarity measurement.

Abstract

The antiviral drug valacyclovir appears to be effective in reducing the risk of cytomegalovirus (CMV) disease in kidney transplant recipients. Cytomegalovirus can be transmitted by organ transplants and can cause the person to reject the organ. Researchers randomly assigned 618 kidney transplant recipients to take valacyclovir or a placebo every day for up to three months. About 200 of the patients did not have CMV but their donor did. Valacyclovir significantly reduced the frequency of CMV disease, from 45% in the placebo group to 3% in the valacyclovir group. Rejection occurred in half the placebo group but only one-fourth of the valacyclovir group.

Abstract

Conventional crossing of soft wheat cultivars resistant to imazamox and glufosinate resulted in two (Rados and Helter) lines resistant to both herbicides. Stacked traits conferring this dual herbicide resistance in these lines, compared with a susceptible (S) cultivar, were characterized.Rados and Helter lines were ∼ 18‐fold more resistant (R) to glufosinate, and between 15.1 and 19.8‐fold more resistant to imazamox than the S cultivar. Resistance to glufosinate and imazamox decreased up to 12% and 50%, respectively, when the herbicides were applied sequentially. The basal activities of the acetolactate and glutamine synthases were similar between R and S plants. Rados and Helter lines were 11.7‐ and 17.7‐fold more resistant to imazamox than the S cultivar, due to the Ser653–Asn mutation in their imi‐ALS genes. R lines, susceptible to glufosinate at the target site level, showed lower ammonia accumulation evidencing the activity of the phosphinothricin acetyl transferase. Absorption and translocation patterns for 14C‐imazamox and 14C‐glufosinate were similar between R and S cultivars and so do not contribute to resistance. Stacked traits conferring dual herbicide resistance to the lines Rados and Helter come from the resistant parents. These R lines are potential tools for weed management in wheat production, mainly via herbicide rotation.

Abstract

El patrimonio cultural edificado más que un obstáculo para el desarrollo de la ciudad se convierte en una inmensa oportunidad para reafirmar la identidad a partir de la memoria y en un promisorio campo de acción profesional. Afortunadamente el ‘proyecto'de intervención patrimonial ya no es una excepción en Bogotá. En momentos en que se habla de la crisis por la falta de tierra apta para construir de la necesidad de densificar el Centro y las áreas tradicionales para evitar la expansión exagerada así como de preservar la memoria y el medio ambiente urbano surgen múltiples alternativas para mejorar en todo sentido la ciudad existente. Restaurar reciclar adecuar y remodelar constituyen modalidades para intervenir inmuebles históricos lo mismo que edificar en contextos patrimoniales. En esencia se trata de construir sobre lo construido. Bogotá está en permanente construcción y muchos de esos proyectos tienen que ver con el patrimonio. Hasta hace poco tiempo los referentes de intervención patrimonial eran por lo general foráneos y para conocerlos debíamos recurrir principalmente a revistas internacionales. Así pensábamos que los ejemplos destacados estaban en Ámsterdam Barcelona o Nueva York quizás en Buenos Aires Sao Paulo o Ciudad de México. Sin embargo muchos de esos casos estaban literalmente a la vuelta de la esquina y mostrarlos es la intención de esta publicación que en formato revista quiere divulgar una serie de proyectos recientes en la capital que dan cuenta de las inmensas opciones de intervención del patrimonio edificado y su contexto inmediato con la finalidad de integrar inmuebles y áreas deterioradas o en desuso a las dinámicas de la ciudad presente y futura. Sin duda alguna el recorrido por las intervenciones presentadas en las páginas siguientes nos permite afi rmar que el patrimonio cultural construido en Bogotá está más vivo que nunca que el patrimonio bogotano tiene futuro.

Abstract

Education is an integral part of the new technologies and that is so that an increasing number of universities worldwide are demanding electronic literacy as one of the requirements in their entrance and graduation exams, considering that it is an essential objective to prepare future professionals for the digital era in the workplace. Thus, in recent years the concept and application of computational thinking has taken great relevance, since as part of its methodology is the use of simulation software as support for learning and problem solving, such computer packages that detect, analyze, understand, correlate and experience in the world virtual solutions that may have problems to solve a real problem, as in the case of electronics in circuit design and programming, curricular contents can be complex and extensive due to the great number of developments and innovations that have emerged in recent decades., La educación es parte integrante de las nuevas tecnologías y eso es tan así que un número cada vez mayor de universidades en todo el mundo está exigiendo la alfabetización electrónica como uno de los requisitos en sus exámenes de acceso y de graduación, por considerar que es un objetivo esencial preparar a los futuros profesionales para la era digital en los centros de trabajo. Es así que en los últimos años ha tomado gran relevancia el concepto y aplicación del pensamiento computacional, ya que como parte de su metodología se encuentra la utilización de software de simulación como apoyo para el aprendizaje y solución de problemas, dichos paquetes informáticos permiten explorar, analizar, comprender, correlacionar y experimentar en el mundo virtual soluciones que posteriormente pueden aplicarse para resolver un problema real, como en el caso de la electrónica en el diseño y programación de circuitos, cuyos contenidos curriculares pueden ser complejos y extensos debido a la gran cantidad de desarrollos e innovaciones que han surgido en las últimas décadas.

Abstract

Background: Equine breeding systems are not frequently studied in their general operation. The objective of the work was to fully characterize equine farms in the province of Azuay, Ecuador. Methods: 45 equine breeding units were sampled, of more than five animals and with more than two years of establishment, of a total of 63 that are registered by the authorized state agency of the province of Azuay. The information considered area, pasture, animal, zootechnical, reproductive, health and expense variables. The analyzes provided the basic statisticians, the main components with Varimax rotation and the analysis of k-means type conglomerates and the statisticians of each conglomerate. Results: The first component explained more than a third of the total variation and related the determinant variables in infrastructure, total area, pasture and the area of facilities. The second component is correlated with the number of births and the repetition of jealousy. The third component is correlated with care and greater welfare for the animals. Two conglomerates were found, differentiated essentially by their areas, number of animals, availability of resources and reproductive behavior. Conclusions: Nowadays, the equine systems of the province of Azuay have in the improvement of the grasslands, the care of the animals and the reproductive behavior the main factors to attend to improve their functioning.

Abstract

Antecedentes: Los sistemas de crianza equina no son frecuentemente estudiados en su funcionamiento general. El objetivo del trabajo fue caracterizar integralmente las granjas equinas de la provincia del Azuay, Ecuador. Métodos: Se muestrearon 45 unidades de crianza equina, de más de cinco animales y con más de dos años de establecidas, de un total de 63 que están registradas por la agencia estatal autorizada de la provincia del Azuay. La información consideró variables de área, pastos, animales, zootécnicas, de reproducción, de salud y de gastos. Los análisis brindaron los estadígrafos básicos, los componentes principales con rotación Varimax y el análisis de conglomerados del tipo k-medias y los estadígrafos de cada conglomerado. Resultados: El primer componente explicó más de la tercera parte de la variación total y relacionó las variables determinantes en infraestructura, área total, la de pastos y el área de instalaciones. El segundo componente está correlacionado con el número de partos y la repetición de celos. El tercer componente está correlacionado con el cuidado y un mayor bienestar para los animales. Se encontraron dos conglomerados, diferenciados esencialmente por sus áreas, número de animales, disponibilidad de recursos y comportamiento reproductivo. Conclusiones: En la actualidad los sistemas equinos de la provincia del Azuay tienen en la mejora de los pastizales, el cuidado de los animales y el comportamiento reproductivo los principales factores a atender para mejorar su funcionamiento.
