Background: Artificial intelligence (AI) deals with development of algorithms that seek to perceive one's environment and perform actions that maximize one's chance of successfully reaching one's predetermined goals., Objective: To provide an overview of the basic principles of AI and its main studies in the fields of glaucoma, retinopathy of prematurity, age-related macular degeneration and diabetic retinopathy. From this perspective, the limitations and potential challenges that have accompanied the implementation and development of this new technology within ophthalmology are presented., Design and Setting: Narrative review developed by a research group at the Universidade Federal de São Paulo (UNIFESP), São Paulo (SP), Brazil., Methods: We searched the literature on the main applications of AI within ophthalmology, using the keywords "artificial intelligence", "diabetic retinopathy", "macular degeneration age-related", "glaucoma" and "retinopathy of prematurity," covering the period from January 1, 2007, to May 3, 2021. We used the MEDLINE database (via PubMed) and the LILACS database (via Virtual Health Library) to identify relevant articles., Results: We retrieved 457 references, of which 47 were considered eligible for intensive review and critical analysis., Conclusion: Use of technology, as embodied in AI algorithms, is a way of providing an increasingly accurate service and enhancing scientific research. This forms a source of complement and innovation in relation to the daily skills of ophthalmologists. Thus, AI adds technology to human expertise.

Objective: To analyze the most common ophthalmologic disorders in pregnant women seen in a hospital in Munich in Germany using a big data analysis system, as well as to compare the results obtained with those from other epidemiological studies that used different data acquisition methods., Methods: We retrospectively analyzed electronic health records of pregnant women who were seen at the ophthalmology department from 2003 to 2019 at the Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München hospital. The main complaints that led to ophthalmic consultations during this period were evaluated, and also the variation in intraocular pressure of patients throughout gestational trimesters by analyzing data from the data warehouse system., Results: A total of 27,326 electronic health records were analyzed. Of participants, 149 (0.54%) required eye care during pregnancy. Their mean intraocular pressure was 17mmHg in the first trimester, 12mmHg in the second trimester, and 14mmHg in the third trimester. The most prevalent findings were dry eye (29.3%) and conjunctivitis (16%), and ametropia (16%). The most common posterior segment problem was diabetic retinopathy (4.6%). The lower mean intraocular pressure in the second and third trimester found in our study is in accordance with other studies that used other method for data acquisition., Conclusion: The most common ophthalmic conditions found in this study population were dry eye, conjunctivitis, and ametropia. The use of data warehouse proved to be useful for acquiring and analyzing data from many patients. This study results are comparable with other studies in published literature that adopted different methodology.

Background and Aim: To analyze the prevalence of ophthalmic manifestations in patients with celiac disease, Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis in Munich/Germany., Methods: A total of 272,873 patients of Ludwig Maximilians Universitat Ophthalmological Hospital with eye disease were evaluated between 2003 and 2019. The International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10) of celiac disease Crohn's disease, ulcerative colitis, and all medical records which had the diagnosis of these diseases were analyzed., Results: A total of 272,873 patients were analyzed, with a mean age of 53 years, with approximately 48% female patients, and 51% male patients. We selected 72 patients with celiac disease (68% women and 32% men), with a minimum age of 8 years, maximum of 103 years, and an average of 52 years. The most common diagnoses were dry eye (32%) and cataract (12%). The mean intraocular pressure of patients with celiac disease was 15 mmHg. During the same study period, 103 patients with Crohn's disease were analyzed, with an average intraocular pressure of 14 mmHg.The minimum age of the patients was 12 years and a maximum of 93 years with an average age of 55 years, with 57% of females and 43% of males. The most common diagnoses were cataract (22%) and dry eye (19%). During the same study period, 99 patients with ulcerative colitis were analyzed, with an average intraocular pressure of 14 mmHg.The minimum age of the patients was 6 years and a maximum of 96 years, with an average age of 61 years, with 36% of females and 64% of males. The most common diagnoses were cataract (29.2%) and dry eye (12%)., Conclusions: The main ophthalmological manifestations of patients requiring eye follow-up were dry eye and cataract for all the diseases analyzed, which can be considered as coincident complications. None of the three diseases had increased intraocular pressure. Thus, celiac disease presented a profile of ophthalmological manifestation similar to the other intestinal inflammatory diseases studied.

BACKGROUND Key genes control the infectivity of the Schistosoma haematobium causing schistosomiasis. A method for understanding the regulation of these genes might help in developing new disease strategies to control schistosomiasis, such as the silencing mediated by microRNAs (miRNAs). The miRNAs have been studied in schistosome species and they play important roles in the post-transcriptional regulation of genes, and in parasite-host interactions. However, genome-wide identification and characterisation of novel miRNAs and their pathway genes and their gene expression have not been explored deeply in the genome and transcriptome of S. haematobium. OBJECTIVES Identify and characterise mature and precursor miRNAs and their pathway genes in the S. haematobium genome. METHODS Computational prediction and characterisation of miRNAs and genes involved in miRNA pathway from S. haematobium genome on SchistoDB. Conserved domain analysis was performed using PFAM and CDD databases. A robust algorithm was applied to identify mature miRNAs and their precursors. The characterisation of the precursor miRNAs was performed using RNAfold, RNAalifold and Perl scripts. FINDINGS We identified and characterised 14 putative proteins involved in miRNA pathway including ARGONAUTE and DICER in S. haematobium. Besides that, 149 mature miRNAs and 131 precursor miRNAs were identified in the genome including novel miRNAs. MAIN CONCLUSIONS miRNA pathway occurs in the S. haematobium, including endogenous miRNAs and miRNA pathway components, suggesting a role of this type of non-coding RNAs in gene regulation in the parasite. The results found in this work will open up a new avenue for studying miRNAs in the S. haematobium biology in helping to understand the mechanism of gene silencing in the human parasite Schistosome.
