CIBER (Center for Biomedical Network Research; Centro de Investigacion Biomedica En Red) is a public national consortium created in 2006 under the umbrella of the Spanish National Institute of Health Carlos III (ISCIII). This innovative research structure comprises 11 different specific areas dedicated to the main public health priorities in the National Health System. CIBERER, the thematic area of CIBER focused on rare diseases (RDs) currently consists of 75 research groups belonging to universities, research centers, and hospitals of the entire country. CIBERER's mission is to be a center prioritizing and favoring collaboration and cooperation between biomedical and clinical research groups, with special emphasis on the aspects of genetic, molecular, biochemical, and cellular research of RDs. This research is the basis for providing new tools for the diagnosis and therapy of low-prevalence diseases, in line with the International Rare Diseases Research Consortium (IRDiRC) objectives, thus favoring translational research between the scientific environment of the laboratory and the clinical setting of health centers. In this article, we intend to review CIBERER's 15-year journey and summarize the main results obtained in terms of internationalization, scientific production, contributions toward the discovery of new therapies and novel genes associated to diseases, cooperation with patients' associations and many other topics related to RD research.

This research evaluated the effects of coffee cultivation with two different water regimes associated or not with liming and the presence/absence of brachiaria as intercrop on the activities of the soil enzymes β-glucosidase, arylsulfatase and acid phosphatase. The study was carried out at the experimental farm of Embrapa Cerrados, using the cultivar IAC 144 (Coffea arabica L.), under a clayey dystrophic Cerrado Oxisol. Two water regimes (WR) were considered, WR1 with irrigation shifts throughout the year and WR3 with controlled water stress, for about 70 days, in the dry season. In each water regime, effects of lime application (with/without) and the presence/absence of brachiaria cultivated between the lines of coffee plants were evaluated. The activities of the enzymes β-glucosidase, arylsulfatase and acid phosphatase were evaluated during the rainy and dry seasons. Liming and intercropped brachiaria positively affected the activities of the three enzymes assessed in this study at varying degrees, depending on season and/or the WR. Our findings evidenced that intercropped brachiaria in coffee rows was the factor that most positively impacted soil enzymes activities. Made available in DSpace on 2021-11-22T15:01:57Z (GMT). As global biodiversity declines, there is an increasing need to create an educated and engaged society. Having people of all ages participate in measuring biodiversity where they live helps to create awareness. Recently, the use of environmental DNA (eDNA) for biodiversity surveys has gained momentum. Here, we explore whether sampling eDNA and sequencing it can be used as a means of rapidly surveying urban biodiversity for educational purposes. We sampled 2 × 1 L of water from each of 15 locations in the city of Trondheim, Norway, including a variety of freshwater, marine, and brackish habitats. DNA was extracted, amplified in triplicate targeting the barcoding fragment of COI gene, and sequenced. The obtained data were analyzed on the novel mBRAVE platform, an online open-access software and computing resource. The water samples were collected in 2 days by two people, and the laboratory analysis was completed in 5 days by one person. Overall, we detected the presence of 506 BINs identified as belonging to 435 taxa, representing at least 265 putative species. On average, only 5.4% of the taxa were shared among six replicates per site. Based on the observed diversity, three distinct clusters were detected and related to the geographic distribution of sites. There were some taxa shared between the habitats, with a substantial presence of terrestrial biota. Here we propose a new form of BioBlitz, where with noninvasive sampling effort combined with swift processing and straightforward online analyses, hundreds of species can be detected. Thus, using eDNA analysis of water is useful for rapid biodiversity surveys and valuable for educational purposes. We show that rapid eDNA surveys, combined with openly available services and software, can be used as an educational tool to raise awareness about the importance of biodiversity.

Resumo Neste estudo, analisamos a percepção de brasileiros e brasileiras sobre a COVID-19 em 12 cidades do país. Foram abordadas questões sobre a gravidade e os perigos da doença, fontes de informações e confiabilidade, checagem de informações, atitudes, precauções e prioridades para o enfrentamento e relações de confiança na ciência. Este estudo foi realizado no contexto de uma pesquisa mais ampla sobre como brasileiros e brasileiras veem a Fundação Oswaldo Cruz (Fiocruz). A survey foi aplicada no período de 18 de maio e 10 de junho de 2020 com 1.643 moradores com mais de 16 anos nas cidades brasileiras em que a Fiocruz possui unidade ou escritório técnico. Os resultados revelam que boa parte dos entrevistados reconhece a gravidade da pandemia, a importância de se informar corretamente, considera as medidas indicadas por autoridades de saúde válidas e confia em cientistas e instituições científicas como fontes de informação. Com o senso de urgência e a potencialização e vivência das incertezas acerca do presente e do futuro, o fortalecimento da confiança nas instituições se faz presente. Abstract In this study, the perception of Brazilians regarding COVID-19 in 12 cities in the country was analyzed. Issues about the severity and dangers of the disease, sources of information and reliability, checking information, attitudes, precautions, and priorities for coping and trusting relationships in science were addressed. This study was carried out in the context of broader research on how Brazilians perceive the Oswaldo Cruz Foundation (Fiocruz). The survey was applied between May 18 and June 10, 2020, with 1,643 residents over 16 years of age in Brazilian cities where Fiocruz has a technical unit or office. The results reveal that the majority of the interviewees appreciate the seriousness of the pandemic, the importance of being properly informed, considers the measures indicated by health authorities important and trusts scientists and scientific institutions as sources of information. With the sense of urgency and experience of uncertainties about the present and the future, the need for strengthening of trust in institutions is present.

A Tecnologia Embrapa de Bioanálise de Solo (BioAS) consiste na agregação de parâmetros relacionados ao fun- cionamento da ?maquinaria? biológica do solo às análises químicas tradicionais de rotina (pH, H + Al, P, Ca, K, Mg, etc.). Nos últimos 20 anos, o grupo de pesquisa com Bioin- dicadores de Qualidade de Solo da Embrapa dedicou-se à seleção de bioindicadores robustos, que permitissem que o agricultor brasileiro pudesse monitorar a saúde de seu solo, sabendo exatamente o que avaliar, porque avaliar, como avaliar, quando avaliar e, principalmente, como interpretar o que foi avaliado (MENDES et al., 2019a). Como resultado desses estudos, duas enzimas presentes no solo, a arilsulfa- tase e a β-glicosidase (associadas aos ciclos do enxofre e do carbono), foram selecionadas e tabelas de intepretação foram desenvolvidas.
