4. Vascular flora of semi-arid region, São José do Piauí, state of Piauí, Brazil

Abstract

The Caatinga biome is located in the semi-arid region of northeastern Brazil and covers about 37 % of Piauístate. The main objective of the present study was a characterization of the Caatinga flora of the farm of Morro do Baixio,in state of Piauí, Brazil (06°51’13” S; 41°28’15” W, at 400 to 540 m above sea level) in view of the fact that very few suchsurveys were conducted in the state. The flora of the farm was surveyed monthly, during a year, to gather herbs, epiphytes,parasites, sub shrubs, shrubs and trees. We encountered 136 species belonging to 46 families, including a new species ofBauhinia. The richest families were Caesalpiniaceae (15 spp.), Fabaceae (11 spp.), Bignoniaceae and Mimosaceae (both withnine spp.). We observed a higher frequency of typical species from sedimentary Caatinga. However, local conditions favorthe appearance of species that occur in Carrasco and Cerrado.

Abstract

Background. In recent years, the healthcare landscape has seen a paradigm shift towards patient‐centeredness in the provision of nursing care. The Primary Nursing Care Model has aroused interest as an approach that prioritizes the individualization and continuity of care, as well as the involvement of the patient in decision‐making about their health, which may impact professional satisfaction, as well as the quality and safety of nursing care. Aim. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of implementing the Primary Nursing Care Model in a hospital service. Methods. This study employed a quasi‐experimental, single‐group design with pre‐ and postintervention evaluations. It involved a convenience sample of 48 nurses from an internal medicine department. Data collection took place between June and November 2023. The intervention consisted of the implementation of the Primary Nursing Care Model. A questionnaire was used to characterize the sociodemographics of the participants, followed by instruments that made it possible to assess missed care, professional nursing practice environments, safety culture, job satisfaction for nurses, and the perception of activities that contribute to the quality of care. Results. The implementation of the Primary Nursing Care Model showed positive results compared to preimplementation. There were statistically significant differences when applying the Wilcoxon test, p < 0.005, with a reduction in missed care, an enhancement of the professional nursing practice environment and safety culture in nursing practice, as well as nurses' job satisfaction and enhanced perception of the activities that contribute to the quality of care. Conclusion. The implementation of the Primary Nursing Care Model in a hospital setting has demonstrated valuable contributions, underscoring its potential to improve the quality of nursing care and promote patient‐centered care approaches. Abstract

This review outlines the evolutionary journey from traditional two-dimensional (2D) cell culture to the revolutionary field of organ-on-a-chip technology. Organ-on-a-chip technology integrates microfluidic systems to mimic the complex physiological environments of human organs, surpassing the limitations of conventional 2D cultures. This evolution has opened new possibilities for understanding cell–cell interactions, cellular responses, drug screening, and disease modeling. However, the design and manufacture of microchips significantly influence their functionality, reliability, and applicability to different biomedical applications. Therefore, it is important to carefully consider design parameters, including the number of channels (single, double, or multi-channels), the channel shape, and the biological context. Simultaneously, the selection of appropriate materials compatible with the cells and fabrication methods optimize the chips’ capabilities for specific applications, mitigating some disadvantages associated with these systems. Furthermore, the success of organ-on-a-chip platforms greatly depends on the careful selection and utilization of cell resources. Advances in stem cell technology and tissue engineering have contributed to the availability of diverse cell sources, facilitating the development of more accurate and reliable organ-on-a-chip models. In conclusion, a holistic perspective of in vitro cellular modeling is provided, highlighting the integration of microfluidic technology and meticulous chip design, which play a pivotal role in replicating organ-specific microenvironments. At the same time, the sensible use of cell resources ensures the fidelity and applicability of these innovative platforms in several biomedical applications.

Abstract

Broadband single photons are usually considered not to couple efficiently to atomic gases because of the large mismatch in bandwidth. Contrary to this intuitive picture, here we demonstrate that the interaction of ultrashort single photons with a dense resonant atomic sample deeply modifies the temporal shape of their wavepacket mode without degrading their non-classical character, and effectively generates zero-area single-photon pulses. This is a clear signature of strong transient coupling between single broadband (THz-level) light quanta and atoms, with intriguing fundamental implications and possible new applications to the storage of quantum information., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We have investigated dissociative recombination (DR) of NH$^+$ with electrons using a merged beams configuration at the TSR heavy-ion storage ring located at the Max Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, Germany. We present our measured absolute merged beams recombination rate coefficient for collision energies from 0 to 12 eV. From these data we have extracted a cross section which we have transformed to a plasma rate coefficient for the collisional plasma temperature range from $T_{\rm pl} = 10$ to $18000$ K. We show that the NH$^+$ DR rate coefficient data in current astrochemical models are underestimated by up to a factor of $\sim 9$. Our new data will result in predicted NH$^+$ abundances lower than calculated by present models. Abstract

We report on an energy-sensitive imaging detector for studying the fragmentation of polyatomic molecules in the dissociative recombination of fast molecular ions with electrons. The system is based on a large area (10 cm x 10 cm) position-sensitive, double-sided Si-strip detector with 128 horizontal and 128 vertical strips, whose pulse height information is read out individually. The setup allows to uniquely identify fragment masses and is thus capable of measuring branching ratios between different fragmentation channels, kinetic energy releases, as well as breakup geometries, as a function of the relative ion-electron energy. The properties of the detection system, which has been installed at the TSR storage ring facility of the Max-Planck Institute for Nuclear Physics in Heidelberg, is illustrated by an investigation of the dissociative recombination of the deuterated triatomic hydrogen cation D2H+. A huge isotope effect is observed when comparing the relative branching ratio between the D2+H and the HD+D channel; the ratio 2B(D2+H)/B(HD+D), which is measured to be 1.27 +/- 0.05 at relative electron-ion energies around 0 eV, is found to increase to 3.7 +/- 0.5 at ~5 eV., Comment: 11 pages, 12 figures, submitted to Physical Review A
