- Abstract
An often-overlooked question of the biodiversity crisis is how natural hazards contribute to species extinction risk. To address this issue, we explored how four natural hazards, earthquakes, hurricanes, tsunamis, and volcanoes, overlapped with the distribution ranges of amphibians, birds, mammals, and reptiles that have either narrow distributions or populations with few mature individuals. To assess which species are at risk from these natural hazards, we combined the frequency and magnitude of each natural hazard to estimate their impact. We considered species at risk if they overlapped with regions where any of the four natural hazards historically occurred (n = 3,722). Those species with at least a quarter of their range subjected to a high relative impact were considered at high risk (n = 2,001) of extinction due to natural hazards. In total, 834 reptiles, 617 amphibians, 302 birds, and 248 mammals were at high risk and they were mainly distributed on islands and in the tropics. Hurricanes (n = 983) and earthquakes (n = 868) affected most species, while tsunamis (n = 272), and volcanoes (n = 171) affected considerably fewer. The region with the highest number of species at high risk was the Pacific Ring of Fire, especially due to volcanoes, earthquakes, and tsunamis, while hurricane-related high-risk species were concentrated in the Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and northwestern Pacific Ocean. Our study provides important information regarding the species at risk due to natural hazards and can help guide conservation attention and efforts to safeguard their survival.

- Abstract
Information on tropical Asian vertebrates has traditionally been sparse, particularly when it comes to cryptic species inhabiting the dense forests of the region. Vertebrate populations are declining globally due to land-use change and hunting, the latter frequently referred as “defaunation.” This is especially true in tropical Asia where there is extensive land-use change and high human densities. Robust monitoring requires that large volumes of vertebrate population data be made available for use by the scientific and applied communities. Camera traps have emerged as an effective, non-invasive, widespread, and common approach to surveying vertebrates in their natural habitats. However, camera-derived datasets remain scattered across a wide array of sources, including published scientific literature, gray literature, and unpublished works, making it challenging for researchers to harness the full potential of cameras for ecology, conservation, and management. In response, we collated and standardized observations from 239 camera trap studies conducted in tropical Asia. There were 278,260 independent records of 371 distinct species, comprising 232 mammals, 132 birds, and seven reptiles. The total trapping effort accumulated in this data paper consisted of 876,606 trap nights, distributed among Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia, Bhutan, Thailand, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos, Vietnam, Nepal, and far eastern India. The relatively standardized deployment methods in the region provide a consistent, reliable, and rich count data set relative to other large-scale pressence-only data sets, such as the Global Biodiversity Information Facility (GBIF) or citizen science repositories (e.g., iNaturalist), and is thus most similar to eBird. To facilitate the use of these data, we also provide mammalian species trait information and 13 environmental covariates calculated at three spatial scales around the camera survey centroids (within 10-, 20-, and 30-km buffers). We will update the da

Despite recent popularization and widespread use in modern electronic devices, LiDAR technology remains expensive for research purposes, in part due to the very high performance offered by commercially available LiDAR scanners. However, such high performance is not always needed, and the expensive price ends up making LiDAR scanners inaccessible for research projects with reduced budget, such as those in developing countries. Here we designed and built a simple ground-based LiDAR scanner, with performance sufficient to fulfil the requirements for a variety of ecological research projects, while being cheap and easy to build. We managed to assemble a LiDAR scanner under 400 USD (as of 2021), and it is simple enough to be built by personnel with minimal engineering background. We also demonstrated the quality of the resulting point clouds by scanning a test site and producing some common LiDAR products. Although not adequate for mapping large area due to its limited range, our LiDAR design is open, customizable, and can produce adequate results while costing ~1% of "low-cost" scanners available in the market. As such, our LiDAR scanner opens a world of new opportunities, particularly for projects in developing countries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The persistence of seed-dispersing animals in degraded habitats could be critical for ensuring the long-term conservation value and restoration of forests. This is particularly important in Southeast Asia, where > 70% of the remaining forest areas are within 1 km of a forest edge, and many are degraded (e.g. logged). We synthesized information on the habitat associations of the binturong Arctictis binturong , a large, semi-arboreal, frugivorous civet and one of the most important seed dispersers in the region, especially for figs (Ficus spp). We adopted a multiscale approach by employing ensemble species distribution modelling from presence-only records, assessing landscape-scale variation in detection rates in published camera-trap studies and using hierarchical occupancy modelling to assess local (i.e. within-landscape) patterns observed from 20 new camera-trap surveys. Contrary to prior reports that binturongs are strongly associated with intact forests, the species was equally present in degraded forests and near forest edges where sufficient forest cover was maintained (> 40% forest cover within a 20-km radius). The species also tolerates moderate incursions of oil palm plantations (< 20% of the area within a 20-km radius covered by oil palm plantations). The relative resilience of binturongs to habitat degradation could be in part because of behavioural adaptations towards increased nocturnal activity. These results support the notion that key seed dispersers can persist and maintain their ecological function in degraded forests. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

FOREST degradation , *LOGGING , *TOP predators , *PREDATION , *HABITATS , *SEED dispersal - Abstract
Habitat loss and fragmentation profoundly impact Southeast Asian rainforest biodiversity and ecosystem functioning. While many larger herbivores are hunted and area‐demanding apex predators are lost from degraded forests (logged forests, forest fragments and forest edges), smaller herbivore species may be comparatively resilient or even benefit from a release from competition and predation in degraded forests. Mousedeer (or chevrotains) in the Tragulus genus are some of the world's smallest ungulates (1.5–4.5 kg) and are widespread in Southeast Asia. We evaluated mousedeer habitat associations at three spatial scales. At the regional scale, presence‐only species distribution modelling suggested mousedeer are negatively associated with aridity and elevation. At the landscape scale, variation capture rates among 186 published camera trapping studies suggested mousedeer are negatively associated with forest degradation and elevation. At the local scale (within landscapes), mousedeer abundance sampled with 1218 cameras at 10 landscapes and analysed with hierarchical abundance modelling suggested mousedeer are negatively associated with humans and elevation. Mousedeer diel activity patterns shifted towards increased nocturnality in degraded forests, possibly to avoid interactions with diurnal humans. Taken together, mousedeer prefer wet lowland forests and they persist – but decline – in degraded habitats and near humans. One exception was degraded forest fragments of Singapore where mousedeer are very abundant, likely due to the absence of hunting and predators. Our results emphasize that small herbivores persisting in fragmented rainforests decline relative to intact forests and thus are unlikely to be experiencing significant release from competition or predation. They also differ from small omnivorous generalists who experience beneficial foraging opportunities at edges. In degraded forests where larger wildlife has been lost, even low densities of small herbivores may perpetuate important ecological interactions such as herbivory, seed dispersal, or as prey for remaining predators. - Abstract
In many disturbed terrestrial landscapes, a subset of native generalist vertebrates thrives. The population trends of these disturbance-tolerant species may be driven by multiple factors, including habitat preferences, foraging opportunities (including crop raiding or human refuse), lower mortality when their predators are persecuted (the ‘human shield’ effect) and reduced competition due to declines of disturbance-sensitive species. A pronounced elevation in the abundance of disturbance-tolerant wildlife can drive numerous cascading impacts on food webs, biodiversity, vegetation structure and people in coupled human–natural systems. There is also concern for increased risk of zoonotic disease transfer to humans and domestic animals from wildlife species with high pathogen loads as their abundance and proximity to humans increases. Here we use field data from 58 landscapes to document a supra-regional phenomenon of the hyperabundance and community dominance of Southeast Asian wild pigs and macaques. These two groups were chosen as prime candidates capable of reaching hyperabundance as they are edge adapted, with gregarious social structure, omnivorous diets, rapid reproduction and high tolerance to human proximity. Compared to intact interior forests, population densities in degraded forests were 148% and 87% higher for wild boar and macaques, respectively. In landscapes with >60% oil palm coverage, wild boar and pig-tailed macaque estimated abundances were 337% and 447% higher than landscapes with 20% oil palm cover where two pig and two macaque species accounted for >80% of independent camera trap detections, leaving 1 kg considered. Establishing the population trends of pigs and macaques is imperative since they are linked to cascading impacts on the fauna and flora of local forest ecosystems, disease and human health, and economics (i.e., crop losses). The severity of potential negative cascading effects may motivate control efforts to achieve ecosystem integrity, human health and conservation objectives. Our review concludes that the rise of native generalists can be mediated by specific types of degradation, which influences the ecology and conservation of natural areas, creating both positive and detrimental impacts on intact ecosystems and human society.

Southeast Asia is experiencing a biodiversity crisis driven by the synergistic forces of deforestation and poaching. The mainland serow (Capricornis sumatraensis) is a large rainforest goat threatened by habitat loss, hunting for bushmeat, and poaching for traditional medicine. Serow have been considered to be montane forest specialists and preferring limestone karsts, but this has never been rigorously evaluated. If the species is restricted to high elevations, climate change and the upward expansion of deforestation and agriculture would threaten the species, but less so if serows are more closely associated with landscape roughness (i.e., rough topography including at low elevations such as in karst landscapes). We collated and synthesised new and existing camera-trap data from 29 landscapes across Southeast Asia to determine the serow's habitat associations at regional, landscape, and local scales. Serow occurrence was negatively associated with oil palm plantation cover and positively associated with landscape roughness across all scales; elevation was not a top-performing variable in model selection. With just 16% of their forested range under some form of declared protection, climate change and expansion of oil palm plantations into higher elevations will further reduce habitat and facilitate poaching into the species' core habitat. However, the serow's preference for rough landscapes, where mechanised agriculture is infeasible, may be its saving grace. An improved understanding of megafauna habitat associations provides conservationists, enforcement agencies, and policymakers with practical and applicable guidance to ensure their persistence in Asia. The behavior of a given species defines the style and intensity of its interactions with the environment, with several species adjusting their behavioral strategies in response to the physical and biological circumstances. However, the decision-making process, intrinsic of any behavioral system, requires the organism to is able of obtain, interpret and process useful information. Due to the large scale and evolutive novelty of the anthropic disturbances, they are able to interfere in the cognitive processes of the species, disrupting the perception and evaluation of the information needed to efficient decision-making, and therefore, cause nonadaptative behaviors, increase in mortality and effects on species ecological interactions. This way, the objective of this study is to evaluate the occurrence of behavioral plasticity, in several model species, in response to environmental factors and anthropic activities. Two experimental chapters and one literature revision was performed. The first chapter was developed in Arizona, U.S.A., and evaluate the amount of food cached by the Mt. Graham red squirrel Tamiasciurus fremonti grahamensis in response to variables of climate, relief and vegetation. It was found that only the females did respond to relief and variations in relief and vegetation, but not climate, while males did not respond to any examined variable. The second chapter, developed in São Paulo, Brazil, evaluate the effect of general anthropic disturbances on dial activity of 17 forest dwelling mammal species. We detected 7 species becoming more nocturnal in response to anthropic disturbance, with a mean nocturnality increase of 20% in disturbed areas. Both diurnal and nocturnal species become more nocturnal, whereas the poached and persecuted species become more nocturnal than nonpoached species. The third chapter was designed as a comparison between the Mt. Graham red squirrel and a Brazilian squirrel, the Guerlinguetus brasiliensis, however, due to the scarcity of natural history information, we decided to map the actual state of knowledge availability about neotropical squirrels. This way, we found 155 publications, from 15 countries, with ecological data for 20 squirrel species, which interacted with 352 other species. We recorded an increase of squirrel population densities in fragmented forests. We also identified several areas of the taxa natural history which are virtually unknown, such the composition of diet of the Sciurillus and Microsciurus genera. CAPES: 168080/2014-1. Nossos resultados também ressaltam que a geometria do fragmento, uma variável negligenciada na maioria dos estudos, é importante para sistemas ecológicos Seed predation is an important kind of ecological process that affect the abundance, diversity and distribution of plant species. Since this ecological process depends on the presence, abundance and behavior of seed predators, what it is affected by the landscape characteristics, the process of seed predation becomes also affected by the landscape characteristics. Most of studies on seed predation in human-modified landscapes do not take into account the different scales in which this process operates. Here we evaluate how landscape structure affects seed predation in a palm (Syagrus romanzoffiana) that provide a keystone resource to the frugivory community in 13 landscapes that vary in forest cover, fragment number and size in the Brazilian Atlantic forest. We found that the overall seed predation is explained by the fragment size, shape and the distance to the edge. Seed predation by the dominant vertebrate seed predator (squirrels) is also related with the fragment size and shape, and they interact with the invertebrates in such way that the invertebrate seed predation is mainly explained by the squirrel predation and by the distance to the edge. In turn, seed predation by terrestrial rodents is correlated with the habitat amount in the landscape, preying upon more seeds in landscapes with less than 30% of habitat. Our results indicate that the Syagrus romanzoffiana seed predation is more affected by the fragment variables than by landscape ones, and that patch size, shape and edge effect are more important predictors of seed predation of this palm than habitat amount in the landscape. Our results also highlights that the fragment geometry, a neglected variable in most of studies, is importance to ecological systems

Our study provides important information regarding the species at risk due to natural hazards and can help guide conservation attention and efforts to safeguard their survival., Competing Interests: Competing interests statement:The authors declare no competing interest.

- Abstract
In many disturbed terrestrial landscapes, a subset of native generalist vertebrates thrives. The population trends of these disturbance-tolerant species may be driven by multiple factors, including habitat preferences, foraging opportunities (including crop raiding or human refuse), lower mortality when their predators are persecuted (the 'human shield' effect) and reduced competition due to declines of disturbance-sensitive species. A pronounced elevation in the abundance of disturbance-tolerant wildlife can drive numerous cascading impacts on food webs, biodiversity, vegetation structure and people in coupled human-natural systems. In landscapes with >60% oil palm coverage, wild boar and pig-tailed macaque estimated abundances were 337% and 447% higher than landscapes with <1% oil palm coverage, respectively, suggesting marked demographic benefits accrued by crop raiding on calorie-rich food subsidies. There was extreme community dominance in forest landscapes with >20% oil palm cover where two pig and two macaque species accounted for >80% of independent camera trap detections, leaving <20% for the other 85 mammal species >1 kg considered. Our review concludes that the rise of native generalists can be mediated by specific types of degradation, which influences the ecology and conservation of natural areas, creating both positive and detrimental impacts on intact ecosystems and human society., (© 2023 The Authors.
