Abstract

This work presents numerical evidences that for discrete dynamical systems with one positive Lyapunov exponent the decay of the distance autocorrelation is always related to the Lyapunov exponent. Distinct decay laws for the distance autocorrelation are observed for different systems, namely exponential decays for the quadratic map, logarithmic for the H\'enon map and power-law for the conservative standard map. In all these cases the decay exponent is close to the positive Lyapunov exponent. For hyperbolic conservative systems, the power-law decay of the distance autocorrelation tends to be guided by the smallest Lyapunov exponent., Comment: 7 pages, 8 figures

Abstract

The aerobic endospore-forming bacteria (AEFB) comprise species of Bacillus and related genera and have long been regarded as prominent constituents of the soil bacterial community. The wide diversity of AEFB renders appropriate categorisation and generalisations a challenging task. We previously isolated 312 AEFB strains from Brazilian soils that we designated SDF (Solo do Distrito Federal) strains. To better understand the SDF diversity and explore their biotechnological potential, we addressed the biochemical and physiological profiles of these 312 environmental strains by performing 30 tests in this work. Of these, the 16S rRNA gene sequences segregated 238 SDF strains into four genera in the family Bacillaceae and two in the Paenibacillaceae. Bacillus spp. were the most prevalent, followed by species of Paenibacillus. We summarised the phenotypic test relationships among selected SDF strains using a Pearson correlation-based clustering represented in heatmaps. In practice, biochemical and physiological profiles are often less discriminatory than molecular data and may be unstable because of the loss of traits. Although these test reactions are not universally positive or negative within species, they may define biotypes and be efficient strain markers, enhancing the accuracy of unknown sample identification. It can also help select the most representative phenotypes of samples. Along with the other phenotypic and genotypic data, the present results are of great importance for the robust classification of the SDF strains within the scope of the polyphasic approach.

Abstract

Galaxy morphology offers significant insights into the evolutionary pathways and underlying physics of galaxies. As astronomical data grows with surveys such as Euclid and Vera C. Rubin , there is a need for tools to classify and analyze the vast numbers of galaxies that will be observed. In this work, we introduce a novel classification technique blending unsupervised clustering based on morphological metrics with the scalability of supervised Convolutional Neural Networks. We delve into a comparative analysis between the well-known CAS (Concentration, Asymmetry, and Smoothness) metrics and our newly proposed EGG (Entropy, Gini, and Gradient Pattern Analysis). Our choice of the EGG system stems from its separation-oriented metrics, maximizing morphological class contrast. We leverage relationships between metrics and morphological classes, leading to an internal agreement between unsupervised clustering and supervised classification. Applying our methodology to the Sloan Digital Sky Survey data, we obtain 95% of Overall Accuracy of purely unsupervised classification and when we replicate T-Type and visually classified galaxy catalogs with accuracy of 88% and 89% respectively, illustrating the method's practicality. Furthermore, the application to Hubble Space Telescope data heralds the potential for unsupervised exploration of a higher redshift range. A notable achievement is our 95% accuracy in unsupervised classification, a result that rivals when juxtaposed with Traditional Machine Learning and closely trails when compared to Deep Learning benchmarks.

Abstract

The brain aging process triggers cognitive function impairment, such as memory loss and compromised quality of life. Cognitive impairment is based on bioenergetic status, with reduced glucose uptake and metabolism in aged brains. Anaplerotic substrates are reported to promote mitochondrial ATP generation, having been tested in clinical trials for the treatment of neurological disorders and metabolic diseases. Objectives and Methods: To assess whether the improvement in oxidative capacity ameliorates cognitive function in adults (12 weeks), and aged (22-month-old) C57/6BJ mice, they received (1) a ketogenic diet, (2) a ketogenic diet supplemented with the anaplerotic substance, triheptanoin, or (3) a control diet for 12 weeks. Spontaneous alternation and time spent in a previously closed arm in the Y-maze test and time interacting with an unknown object in the novel object recognition test (NORT) were used to evaluate working memory. Acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity in the prefrontal lobe, brain left hemisphere, and cerebellum was also evaluated. Glucose transporter 3 (GLUT3) expression in the prefrontal lobe was analyzed by western blotting. Results: The ketogenic diet (KD) reduced spontaneous alternation in aged mice, leading to lower AChE activity in the aged prefrontal lobe and cerebellum, and in the parieto-temporal-occipital lobe of adult mice. Furthermore, KD decreased GLUT3 protein expression in the frontal lobe of the adults. Discussion: Supplementation of KD with triheptanoin prevented memory impairment and showed similar values of AChE activity and GLUT3 expression compared to the controls. Our data suggest that triheptanoin has a potential role in the bioenergetic capacity of the brain, improving cognitive function. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Background: Urine output is widely used as one of the criteria for the diagnosis and staging of acute renal failure, but few studies have specifically assessed the role of oliguria as a marker of acute renal failure or outcomes in general intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Using a large multinational database, we therefore evaluated the occurrence of oliguria (defined as a urine output < 0.5 ml/kg/h) in acutely ill patients and its association with the need for renal replacement therapy (RRT) and outcome. Methods: International observational study. All adult (> 16 years) patients in the ICON audit who had a urine output measurement on the day of admission were included. To investigate the association between oliguria and mortality, we used a multilevel analysis. Results: Of the 8292 patients included, 2050 (24.7%) were oliguric during the first 24 h of admission. Patients with oliguria on admission who had at least one additional 24-h urine output recorded during their ICU stay (n = 1349) were divided into three groups: transient - oliguria resolved within 48 h after the admission day (n = 390 [28.9%]), prolonged - oliguria resolved > 48 h after the admission day (n = 141 [10.5%]), and permanent - oliguria persisting for the whole ICU stay or again present at the end of the ICU stay (n = 818 [60.6%]). ICU and hospital mortality rates were higher in patients with oliguria than in those without, except for patients with transient oliguria who had significantly lower mortality rates than non-oliguric patients. In multilevel analysis, the need for RRT was associated with a significantly higher risk of death (OR = 1.51 [95% CI 1.19-1.91], p = 0.001), but the presence of oliguria on admission was not (OR = 1.14 [95% CI 0.97-1.34], p = 0.103). Conclusions: Oliguria is common in ICU patients and may have a relatively benign nature if only transient. The duration of oliguria and need for RRT are associated with worse outcome.

Abstract

The aerobic endospore-forming bacteria (AEFB) comprise species of Bacillus and related genera, allocated in the phylum Firmicutes. Although Bacillus spp. are among the first bacteria to be characterised, the wide diversity renders appropriate categorisation and generalisations challenging tasks. To determine genetic diversity, analyses at the molecular level are the most accurate. However, gene expression, morphological, biochemical, and physiological aspects must also be considered. The metabolism of bacteria is adapted to their natural environment or host. Thus, metabolic outlines can be used for identifying AEFB, form the basis of the formal description of bacterial taxa, and are strongly recommended for taxonomic purposes. This work addressed the biochemical and physiological profiles of 312 environmental AEFB—designated as SDF (Solo do Distrito Federal)—by performing 30 tests. Out of it, 246 were classified by 16S rRNA gene sequences. We summarised the phenotypic test relationships among selected SDF strains using a Pearson correlation-based clustering represented in heatmaps. In practice, biochemical and physiological profiles are often less discriminatory than molecular data and may be unstable because of the loss of traits. Though these test reactions are not universally positive or negative within species, they may define biotypes and be efficient strain markers, enhancing the accuracy of unknown sample identification. It can be also helpful in selecting the best represent the phenotypes of samples. Along with the other phenotypic and genotypic data, the present results will be of great importance for the robust classification of the SDF strains within the scope of the polyphasic approach.
