Thyme and ivy leaves contain anti-inflammatory, mucolytic, and bronchospasmolytic properties, resulting in anti-cough benefits. There are no extensive studies conducted on the efficacy of thyme and ivy in children with acute cough. The purpose of the study was to investigate the efficiency and safety of thyme and ivy in reducing the severity of cough in children. This study was a randomized, controlled, double-blind clinical experiment on children aged 1 to 12-year old who had an acute cough with no identified etiology. One hundred and forty-two patients were randomly assigned to dextromethorphan or herbal groups, and frequency and severity were measured using a visual analog scale. After the initiation of therapy, recovery trends were assessed at 24, 48, and 96 hours. Eighty-three patients, including 43 patients in the dextromethorphan group and 40 in the herbal group, were followed for 96 hours. Cough severity was decreased by 80.7% in the dextromethorphan group and 87.4% in the herbal syrup group. In addition, there was a significant interaction effect of time and groups on changes in cough severity. In the groups of dextromethorphan and herbal after 96 hours of complete treatment, the efficacy was 72.1% and 75%, respectively, which showed the beneficial effects of both drugs. In children, a mixture of thyme and ivy extracts can help to reduce the severity and length of the cough. Introduction Wind Erosion is the natural process of transportation and deposition of soil by wind. It is a common phenomenon occurred mostly in dry, sandy soils or anywhere the soil is loose, dry, and finely granulated. Heavy metals are found in the environment and soils may become contaminated by accumulation of heavy metals through emissions from the rapidly expanding industrial areas, mine tailings, disposal of high metal wastes, leaded gasoline and paints, land application of fertilizers, animal manures, sewage sludge, pesticides, wastewater irrigation, coal combustion residues, spillage of petrochemicals, and atmospheric deposition. Soils are the major sink for heavy metals released into the environment by the aforementioned anthropogenic activities and their total concentration in soils persists for a long time after their introduction. The heavy metal contamination of soil and its potential risks to humans and the ecosystem is a significant concern. Windy deposition, which is the process of heavy metals being transported by erosive winds and deposited onto soil, is one of the sources of heavy metal contamination. Due to the geographical situation and climatic conditions such as arid soil, erosive winds are blown in periods of year in Tabas. Since wind are erosion is severe in this area, huge amounts of wind deposition accompanied with erosive winds entered into this town. Heavy metals through the windy deposition are suspended, translated and finally deposited in residential regions, which can create some problems for human health. Therefore, the knowledge of wind erosion and the human risk of these deposits is essential. The aim of this research was to determine the rate of wind erosion and the concentration of some heavy metals in these deposits. Materials and Methods For this purpose, the rate of suspended load was measured monthly from February 2021 to January 2022. Based on previous information from the erosive winds and storms, suspended depositions were gathered in some directions (north, northwest, northeast, west and southwest) of the Tabas entrance. In addition, the suspended load in the city center of Tabas was also measured. The cumulative load of suspended depositions was measured monthly and the concentration of some heavy metals such as manganese (Mn), iron (Fe), cupper (Cu), and zinc (Zn) were measured in these suspended particles. Soil digestion was made by Aqua regia (nitric acid and chloridric acid; ratio of 3:1), and after then atomic absorption was used to measure the total concentration of above heavy metals. Results and Discussion The results indicate that Tabas experiences significant wind deposition of suspended loads, with the highest rates entering from the northeast direction and the lowest rates from the southwest direction. This pattern aligns with the wind rose of Tabas, which illustrates the prevailing wind directions in the region. Additionally, substantial suspended loads are observed in the northwest and north directions. The variations in suspended load discharge reveal that the maximum discharge occurs in the city center of Tabas during the months of June and July 2021. This corresponds to the arid climate conditions of these months, where plant growth is limited, soil cohesion is low, and loose soil particles on the surface are susceptible to wind forces. As a result, these loose particles are easily detached by the wind, contributing to the high levels of suspended load. Regarding the spatial variation of heavy metals in suspended particles, the cumulative concentrations of Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn are found to be higher in the west, northwest, north, and west directions, respectively. This suggests that these heavy metals are transported and deposited in specific areas within Tabas due to the prevailing wind patterns. In terms of temporal variation, the highest concentrations of Mn and Fe in suspended particles are observed in April 2021, predominantly in the northeast and west directions, respectively. On the other hand, the highest concentrations of Cu and Zn are found in May 2021, with the southwest and northeast directions being the primary deposition areas for each metal, respectively. These findings highlight the spatial and temporal dynamics of suspended load and heavy metal deposition in Tabas, emphasizing the influence of wind patterns and climatic conditions on these processes. Understanding these variations is crucial for assessing the potential risks associated with heavy metal contamination and implementing appropriate mitigation measures in the region. Conclusion The results of this research showed that most contents of the suspended load are entered from the northeast direction into Tabas. In addition, the spatial variation of heavy metals indicated that the concentrations of studied heavy metals (Mn, Fe, Cu, and Zn) in suspended particles, especially in the western, northwestern, and northern in spring, are very high and they can cause carcinogenic effects on human life. COVID-19 is an emerging pandemic that caused a very widespread infection with more than 1000000 cases in Iran within a year. The main cause of mortality among patients with COVID-19 is pulmonary failure. In Iranian Traditional Medicine, essences have been used for curing pulmonary diseases. Pinen-Hydronoplacton-Ribonucleic acid (PHR) is an inhaler spray made of seven different plants, which all are used by humans and have desirable pharmacological features for treating pulmonary symptoms of COVID-19 patients. This study was conducted to assess the safety and effectiveness of PHR160 spray in improving pulmonary symptoms of COVID-19 patients. This was a single-centre, non-blinded randomized clinical trial with two parallel groups in two different wards of Baqiyatallah hospital, Tehran, Iran. Participants were 63 male patients diagnosed with COVID-19 pneumonia, divided into 2 groups of 32 in the intervention group and 31 in the control group. The intervention group received 5 days of PHR160 spray, 10 puffs each day, 300 micrograms in each puff in addition to the routine treatment. Oxygen saturation was measured by a pulse oximeter, every six hours and recorded daily. This study showed that administration of PhR 160 in patients of COVID-19 was safe, and it significantly increased the arterial oxygen saturation percentage in COVID-19 patients. In addition, it decreased hospitalization duration, dyspnea score, and cough score significantly in the patients. The statistical modelling test, with adjusting the age and respiratory rate for baseline and 4 days of the intervention, shows that the oxygen saturation percentage mean was significantly more in the intervention group by 5.14 units (p<0.001). A simple two-dimensional analytical model of laminar flame in aluminium dust clouds is developed for predicting temperature profiles, flame speed, and flammability limit. This study follows previous studies, in which the models were developed in one-dimensional and 2D in Cartesian coordinate forms, and considers cylindrical coordinates since a tubular space is where most of the experimental works on the subject of dust combustion have been carried out. This article aims mainly to study the effect of the heat loss that happens from the surrounding wall on important combustion parameters including the flame speed and lean flammability limit, with more accuracy. The equations are written in the fuel–lean condition and a tube with constant temperature boundary conditions is assumed as well. The zones constructing the structure of a flame include preheat, reaction, and post-flame zones, for which the equations are solved using the method of separation of variables. The model is used to generate a correlation for the variations of flame speeds in terms of particles’ diameter, equivalence ratio, and tube diameter. Background: Accidents are the leading cause of emergency room admissions and mortality for children below the age of 15. This study evaluate overall epidemiological information of pediatric trauma in children referred to Isfahan Alzahra Hospital. Materials and Methods: This cross-sectional study included 2300 children admitted to Alzahra Hospital emergency room during 2005-8. Data including age, sex, kind of trauma, site of injury, blood pressure and cause of death were recorded in prepared checklist by the study of hospital files. Results: Female to male ratio was 2:1 (66.7% versus 33.3). Most of the events (45%) happened at home and school. Fall (32%) followed by motor vehicle accidents (31.1%) were the most common mechanisms of trauma. The most common areas injured in pediatric multiple trauma victims were head (34.3%) and limbs (18.9%). Mortality rate was (4.1%). Conclusion: Falling down and traffic accidents are very common in pediatric emergencies. Training the parents to believe that their children are in need of protection and surveillance is the most effective program of decreasing trauma-induced mortality in children. The first commercial acoustic-telemetry system was introduced successfully in 2000 as part of a drillstem-testing system. However, duplicating the success of the acoustic telemetry to environmentally challenging logging-while-drilling (LWD) applications at high data throughput remains a formidable task. The primary limitation arises from normal drilling operations that produce inband acoustic noise at multiple sources at intensities comparable to the transmitter output. This noise, together with the signal attenuation along the drillstring, adversely affects the data throughput. To determine the communication capacity of the drillstring channel using acoustic waves, we examined the impact of channel characteristics, signal attenuation, and noise in detail. On the basis of a communication model that incorporates the effects of both drillstring acoustic channel and noise, we extensively studied the capacity of the system using the waterfilling method. For this analysis, realistic downhole transmitter power output, experimentally measured noise at the surface, and measured attenuation of acoustic waves in the drillstring channel were used as input parameters. The results show that a typical drillstring channel has a potential capacity of up to several hundred bits per second under noisy drilling conditions. Implications of the channel capacity on acoustic-telemetry-system designs are discussed. A communication technique that comes close to realizing a high-rate telemetry system is introduced. Methods to optimize various aspects of the system such that maximum drillstring-channel utilization can be realized under drilling conditions are also discussed. Background : The diagnosis of Hirschsprung′s disease (HD) is based on the absence of ganglion cells. In hemotoxilin and eosin (H and E) as well as acetylcholine esterase staining there are limitations in the diagnosis of immature ganglion cells in neonates. Methods : In this prospective study, 54 biopsies taken from suspected HD patients (five mucosal specimens and 49 full thickness specimens) were studied. In the laboratory, after preparing sections of paraffin embedded tissues, H and E staining slides were compared with immunohistochemical (IHC) staining including: S100, NSE, CD117, CD56, Cathepsin D, Vimentin, BCL2, GFAP, Synaptophysin and chromogranin. Results : The study revealed 30 negative (absence of ganglion cells) cases (55.5%), 17 positive cases (31.04%) and seven suspected cases (12.9%) of ganglion cells on the H and E staining. On IHC staining with CD56 and Cathepsin D, all of the 17 positive cases detected through H and E, were confirmed for having ganglion cells and out of 30 cases reported negative on H and E staining, 28(93.3%) were reported negative and two (6.7%) positive by IHC staining. Of the seven suspected cases H and E staining), IHC staining detectedganglion cells only in five slides; two remained negative. Conclusions : IHC staining using CD56 and Cathepsin D improved the accuracy of diagnosis in HD when used in addition to H and E staining technique, especially for negative or suspicious slides.

We propose a new methodfor predicting movements in Forex market based on NARX neural network withtime shifting bagging techniqueand financial indicators, such as relative strength index and stochastic indicators. Neural networks have prominent learning ability but they often exhibit bad and unpredictable performance for noisy data. When compared with the static neural networks, our method significantly reducesthe error rate of the responseandimproves the performance of the prediction. We tested three different types ofarchitecture for predicting the response and determined the best network approach. We applied our method to prediction the hourly foreign exchange rates and found remarkable predictability in comprehensive experiments with 2 different foreign exchange rates (GBPUSD and EURUSD).

Background: To evaluate the demographic, clinical, and prognostic characteristics of patients diagnosed with COVID-19-associated mucormycosis (CAM) in Iranian patients., Methods: This prospective observational study was conducted in 8 tertiary referral ophthalmology centers in different provinces of Iran during the fifth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. All patients were subjected to complete history taking and comprehensive ophthalmological examination and underwent standard accepted treatment strategy based on the disease stage., Results: Two hundred seventy-four CAM patients (most were males (150, 54.7%)) with a mean age of 56.8 ± 12.44 years were enrolled. Patients with a history of cigarette smoking (Adjusted Odds Ratio (AOR) = 4.36), Intensive Care Unit admission (ICU) (AOR = 16.26), higher stage of CAM (AOR = 2.72), and receiving endoscopic debridement and transcutaneous retrobulbar amphotericin B (AOR = 3.30) had higher odds of mortality. History of taking systemic corticosteroids during COVID-19 was significantly associated with reduced odds of mortality (AOR = 0.16). Generalized Estimating Equations analysis showed that the visual acuity of deceased patients (LogMAR: 3.71, 95% CI: 3.04-4.38) was worse than that of patients who were discharged from the hospital (LogMAR: 2.42, 95% CI: 2.16-2.68) (P < 0.001)., Conclusions: This study highlights significant risk factors for mortality in patients with CAM, such as cigarette smoking, ICU admission, advanced CAM stages, receiving transcutaneous retrobulbar amphotericin B and worser visual acuity. Conversely, a history of systemic corticosteroid use during COVID-19 was linked to reduced mortality. Background and Aim: Earthquake is a natural disaster severely affecting the societies' health, hygiene, and welfare as such the most effective method to respond to its damages is to develop a readiness plan. This study aimed to discover thematic patterns and co-author relationships extracted from relevant publications to plan an earthquake response., Materials and Methods: This descriptive-analytical study adopted the scientometric approach and used word co-occurrence and social network analysis. The published articles indexed in PubMed were retrieved from 1970 to 2021 using a combination of keywords "earthquake and response." The data were analyzed in VOSviewer, UCINET, and NetDraw software., Results: The following six thematic clusters with a social map were extracted: Initial response of the healthcare system, response to probabilistic risks after the hazard, response to mental health and community resilience, response to public health, response to post-traumatic stress disorders, and staff's response to the needs assessment and continuity of diagnostic treatment services. Backgrounds: Due to the severity of the earthquake, it may need immediate treatment and transfer of the injured people to advanced medical centers, as well as dispatch of the expert team and specialized health equipment to the accident-affected area. Aerial emergency is an important responsibility of the health care system in this situation. The study aimed to extract the prehospital emergency challenges of Iran aerial operations emergency in response to the earthquake., Materials and Methods: The study was qualitative content analysis with conventional approach. Sampling was done in a purposive method and data were collected through semi-structured interview. The panel involved consists of 26 health professionals in medical emergencies. Recorded interviews were transcribed into written and then conventional content analysis was used to derive coding categories directly from the text data., Results: Content analysis is provided 97 initial codes, 20 subcategories and 4 main categories including challenges of "response assessment," "support," "pre-hospital staff-management," and "response operation," respectively., Conclusions: The results showed that the necessity to assess the affected area, staffing, and management actions, including integrated operations command and the development of a dedicated response plan, as well as the use of strategies inter-organizational coordination in the response phase to earthquake. Objective: This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness, safety, and document the reported adverse effect of a herbal-based laxative (Goleghand ® ) for the maintenance treatment of functional constipation in young children., Methods: We conducted a randomized clinical trial from April 2019 to September 2020. Children aged 2-15 years with functional constipation defined according to the Rome IV criteria were eligible for study inclusion. Eligible children were randomly allocated to receive polyethylene glycol (PEG) or Goleghand ® . The number and consistency of stools per day, painful defecation, abdominal pain, and fecal incontinence were reported weekly by parents. The statistical analyses were performed by determining means and standard deviations, t -test, Chi-square test, ANOVA repeated measures, and Fisher's exact test, with significance, accepted at the 5% level., Findings: Sixty patients have been enrolled in the study. Parental satisfaction scores did not change significantly in either group or over the follow-up period. Our results showed that the effect of time ( P < 0.001) and also the effect of group type ( P = 0.01) on the number of fecal defecations was significant. The mean number of defecations increased first and then decreased significantly over time, but this decrease was more significant in the PEG group than in the Goleghand ® group ( P = 0.001). Furthermore, the effect of time on the fecal consistency score was significant ( P = 0.047). The mean score of fecal consistency in both groups decreased over time., Conclusion: Goleghand ® was similar in efficacy to PEG for 8 weeks of pediatric functional constipation treatment in this randomized clinical trial. To protect anthocyanins of Iranian borage extract (IBE) by encapsulation, maltodextrin (MD)/modified maize starch (MMS) combinations were used at four ratios (MD/MMS: 1/0, 1/0.25, 1/0.5, 1/1, w/w%). The microencapsulated powders with different ratios of wall material presented encapsulation efficacy between 93.1 and 97.4%. FTIR confirmed the cross-linking interaction between extract and MD/MMS wall. Increased thermal stability of extract was also indicated by DSC analysis. The stability of microstructures and crude extract at two conditions (5 and 40 °C) was evaluated by UV and HPLC methods during 60 days. The results of stability showed that encapsulation by treatment 4 (MD/MMS 1:1) improved the stability of anthocyanins 43.8% compared to crude extract. Additionally, microcapsule created in this treatment provided great antioxidant stability. The release in the simulated gastrointestinal tract revealed that the anthocyanins were chiefly retained inside the microparticles in the stomach, and were released in the intestine. The results demonstrated that the microencapsulation with MD and MMS by the spray-drying method can improve the stability, antioxidant and functional characteristics of borage extract, which could be useful in the food and pharmaceutical industry., (Copyright © 2020 Elsevier B.V. Workplaces are susceptible places for exposure to the new coronavirus (Covid-19) infection due to gathering of many people. Hence, different instructions have been promoted by international organizations regarding high-risk employees and the necessity of implementing health policies to prevent exposure and infection in the workplace. Here we reviewed the required strategies to prevent and control COVID-19 in the workplace. In conclusion, considering the fast spreading and growing prevalence of the new corona virus disease in the world over, all managers, employers, and business owners should receive the necessary information and training on prevention and control strategies based on scientific guidelines and standards.

Background and Objectives: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia (BPH) is a common urological disorder as men get older. BPH can cause uncomfortable urinary tract symptoms. Given the high incidence of the disease, further research is an undeniable necessity for its better management. In this research, the efficacy of Urtica Dioica root extract (UDE) on clinical and biochemical parameters were evaluated in this type of patients., Materials and Methods: Participants were 60 men with BPH that randomly allocated to two equal groups (Intervention = 30 and Comparison = 30). Block balanced Randomization method was performed using a computer by a trained nurse. Intervention and comparison groups received 450 mg day-1 UDE and placebo as tablets for 12 weeks, respectively. The main outcome was changes in International Prostate Symptoms Score (IPSS) from baseline to end of treatment. Data were collected by completing a standard questionnaire and performing relevant tests based on common laboratory methods., Results: UDE had an intermediate effect on IPSS, a small effect on serum high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP), intermediate to large effect on malondialdehyde (MDA) levels and intermediate effect on superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity. The magnitude of the effects of UDE on other parameters was overall negligible compared to the comparison and not significant. No side effects were seen in these patients following tablet usage., Conclusion: UDE consumption for 12 weeks among BPH patients had clinically significant effects on IPSS, serum hs-CRP, MDA and SOD activity.

Current and future prospects for successfully rebuilding global fisheries remain debated due to uncertain stock status, variable management success, and disruptive environmental change. While scientists routinely account for some of this uncertainty in population models, the mechanisms by which this translates into decision-making and policy are problematic and can lead to unintentional overexploitation. Here, we explicitly track the role of measurement uncertainty and environmental variation in the decision-making process for setting catch quotas. Analyzing 109 well-sampled stocks from all oceans, we show that current practices may attain 55% recovery on average, while richer decision methods borrowed from robotics yield 85% recovery of global stocks by midcentury, higher economic returns, and greater robustness to environmental surprises. These results challenge the consensus that global fisheries can be rebuilt by existing approaches alone, while also underscoring that rebuilding stocks may still be achieved by improved decision-making tools that optimally manage this uncertainty.

Ecological management and decision-making typically focus on uncertainty about the future, but surprisingly little is known about how to account for uncertainty of the present: that is, the realities of having only partial or imperfect measurements. Our primary paradigms for handling decisions under uncertainty-the precautionary principle and optimal control-have so far given contradictory results. This paradox is best illustrated in the example of fisheries management, where many ideas that guide thinking about ecological decision-making were first developed. We find that simplistic optimal control approaches have repeatedly concluded that a manager should increase catch quotas when faced with greater uncertainty about the fish biomass. Current best practices take a more precautionary approach, decreasing catch quotas by a fixed amount to account for uncertainty. Using comparisons to both simulated and historical catch data, we find that neither approach is sufficient to avoid stock collapses under moderate observational uncertainty. Using partially observed Markov decision process (POMDP) methods, we demonstrate how this paradox arises from flaws in the standard theory, which contributes to overexploitation of fisheries and increased probability of economic and ecological collapse. In contrast, we find that POMDP-based management avoids such overexploitation while also generating higher economic value. These results have significant implications for how we handle uncertainty in both fisheries and ecological management more generally.

Objectives: This study was designed to determine the incidence of velopharyngeal insufficiency (VPI), oronasal fistula development and facial grimace in patients seen by Isfahan Cleft Care Team (ICCT) after primary Sommerlad intravelar veloplasty (SIVV). Furthermore the association of gender, cleft type and age at primary surgery with the incidence of hypernasality and fistula is determined., Methods: A group of 40 patients with history of cleft palate with or without cleft lip were identified from the records of ICCT between 2011 and 2014. The main outcome measures were the incidence of hypernasality and fistula after primary palate repair with SIVV. Speech recordings were analyzed by consensus by two speech therapists according to the Cleft Audit Protocol for Speech- Augmented (CAPS-A), (Kappa = 82.4). Deciding whether or not to have a fistula was based on the oral examination videos., Results: Severe and moderate hypernasality was observed in 42.5% of patients. Normal resonance and mild/borderline hypernasality was observed in 37.5% and 20% of patients, respectively. The frequency of fistulas was 7.5%. There was a significant association between hypernasality with cleft type and the age at primary surgery (p < 0.05)., Conclusion: Significant progress has been made in the outcomes of the primary palate surgeries with the SIVV technique compared to the previous study in the ICCT., (Copyright © 2019 Elsevier B.V. Objective: We aimed to detect and report the frequency of occurrence of drug-related problems (DRPs) in a Middle Eastern University Children's Hospital (Isfahan, Iran) and classify them in terms of their nature and cause to clarify the responsibility of clinical pharmacists for the safe utilization of medications in hospitalized children., Methods: In this cross-sectional study which was carried out in Imam Hossein Children's University Hospital affiliated with Isfahan University of Medical Sciences (Isfahan, Iran) from September 2017 to May 2018, DRPs during the hospitalization of pediatric patients in three medical wards, the pediatric intensive care unit, and two neonatal intensive care units were detected and identified concurrently with the treatment process using Pharmaceutical Care Network of Europe data gathering form for DRPs v. 8.01. All cases were verified and validated in a professional focus group before documentation., Findings: We detected 427 DRPs in 201 out of 250 randomly included hospitalized children in which 86% of them were directly reported by the hospital's clinical pharmacist. The highest frequency of DRPs (47.3%) was observed in the age range of 1 month-2 years. Safety of treatment was the most frequently reported as the nature of the problem (43.5%), followed by effectiveness issues (36.8%). The most frequent cause of DRPs was dose selection issues (34.2%), followed by drug-type selection (25.5%), and unavailability of appropriate dosage forms (13.6%). Background and Objective: Hypertension is a long-term medical condition in which the blood pressure is gradually elevated. In this project, the effects of olive leaf extract (OLE) were evaluated on metabolic response, liver and kidney functions and also biomarkers of inflammation in hypertensive patients., Materials and Methods: In this randomized double-blind placebo controlled clinical trial, 60 hypertensive patients, aged 30-60 years old had participated. Patients were randomly assigned into two groups to receive either OLE or placebo tablets for 12 weeks. At the beginning and end of the intervention, metabolic parameters and biomarkers of liver, kidney and inflammation were measured in sera of the participants using available laboratory methods., Results: Compared with the placebo, changes in parameters associated with glucose metabolism were not statistically significant (p>0.05). The OLE tablets did not have significant effect on liver enzymes, total protein, albumin, urea and creatinine (p>0.05), but significantly decreased interleukin-6, interleukin-8 and tumor necrosis factor alpha as inflammatory biomarkers (p<0.05) in OLE group compared to the placebo group., Conclusion: The results concluded that inflammation as a major cause of hypertension was significantly decreased in patients using OLE tablets.

Background: Although evidence suggests that empathic behaviour is an essential component in nursing care that affects the psychological distress experienced by cancer patients, it remains a neglected issue in nursing in Iran., Methods: This study was conducted on 33 participants selected through purposive sampling. Purpose The purpose of this paper is to explore oncology nurses' barriers to empathy-based care perceptions. Design/methodology/approach The authors used a descriptive qualitative method. In total, 18 oncology nurses were selected via purposive sampling. Data were collected through in-depth interviews and qualitative content analysis using an inductive approach. Findings Three main categories emerged from the data analysis: barriers related to nursing including: lacking compassion; disinterest in oncology nursing and self-criticism; psychological distress; barriers related to healthcare: job strain; task-centeredness; no formal training; poor manager support; nurse-patient gender imbalance; and barriers related to cancer care including: difficulty maintaining empathy with cancer patients; and inappropriate cancer patient Practical implications Oncology nurses provided insights into barriers to empathy-based care and the challenges they encountered while caring for cancer patients. Understanding these barriers is the first step to overcoming obstacles and creating an open and caring environment to provide an empathic care culture. Originality/value Given that oncology nurses experience several emotions, positive coping strategies for these distresses should be adopted. Healthcare systems should change cancer-caring culture from task-centered to patient-centered care. Compassion and empathy should become patient care values.
