Abstract

Background and Objectives: The development and functioning of all living beings ends with the inevitable aging process, as a result of which the activity of all organs and the body as a whole is suppressed, which leads to imminent death. Protein glycation is considered to be one of the causes of aging. This process takes place throughout life, but it intensifies with age. Protein glycation is a reaction of covalent coupling of free amino groups of proteins and reducing carbohydrates, which proceeds without the participation of enzymes and leads to disruption of protein functions. This process is unregulated, as it occurs without the participation of biological catalysts. As a result of glycation of proteins in humans, inflammatory processes occur in the body and a number of diseases such as heart attack, stroke, atherosclerosis, cataract, glycemia, Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes mellitus, etc. develop. In the tasks of medical diagnostics, methods of monitoring the state of proteins in the human body are necessary. In this regard, the work is devoted to the study of the processes of interaction of human serum albumin globules (HSA) with globules of human glycated serum albumin (gHSA). Materials and Methods: In conducting a study of the spectral-kinetic characteristics of the eosin luminescent probe in solutions of glycated and non-glycated HSA, as well as in a mixture of glycated and non–glycated HSA, an exponential dependence of the second order was used to approximate the dependencies of DF (delayed fluorescence) and PHOS (phosphorescence), and an anisotropy equation was used to assume the formation of the gHSA-HSA complex. Results: It has been found that the intensity and kinetics of quenching of delayed fluorescence and phosphorescence of the eosin fluorescent probe associated with proteins are sensitive to the ratio of glycated and non-glycated proteins in solution. To explain the increase in the intensity and lifetime of eosin phosphorescence during the transition from a solution of HSA to a mixture of HSA and gHSA, it is assumed that the globules of HSA and gHSA form a complex of the composition of gHSA-HSA, as a result of diffusion encounters. The rotational mobility of this complex is much less than the separate globules of HSA and gHSA. The formation of the complex is confirmed by an increase in the anisotropy of delayed fluorescence and phosphorescence of eosin in a mixture of HSA and gHSA. Conclusion: The obtained results of the work can be used to diagnose the presence of a complex of glycated with non-glycated proteins in human blood plasma.

Abstract

We study a dynamic vector bin packing (DVBP) problem. We show hardness for shrinking arbitrary DVBP instances to size polynomial in the number of request types or in the maximal number of requests overlapping in time. We also present a simple polynomial-time data reduction algorithm that allows to recover $(1 + {\varepsilon})$-approximate solutions for arbitrary ${\varepsilon} > 0$. It shrinks instances from Microsoft Azure and Huawei Cloud by an order of magnitude for ${\varepsilon} = 0.02$., Comment: Version accepted to Operations Research Letters

Abstract

We propose a Quantization Guided Training (QGT) method to guide DNN training towards optimized low-bit-precision targets and reach extreme compression levels below 8-bit precision. Unlike standard quantization-aware training (QAT) approaches, QGT uses customized regularization to encourage weight values towards a distribution that maximizes accuracy while reducing quantization errors. One of the main benefits of this approach is the ability to identify compression bottlenecks. We validate QGT using state-of-the-art model architectures on vision datasets. We also demonstrate the effectiveness of QGT with an 81KB tiny model for person detection down to 2-bit precision (representing 17.7x size reduction), while maintaining an accuracy drop of only 3% compared to a floating-point baseline., Comment: TinyML Summit, March 2021

Abstract

Quantization for deep neural networks (DNN) have enabled developers to deploy models with less memory and more efficient low-power inference. However, not all DNN designs are friendly to quantization. For example, the popular Mobilenet architecture has been tuned to reduce parameter size and computational latency with separable depth-wise convolutions, but not all quantization algorithms work well and the accuracy can suffer against its float point versions. In this paper, we analyzed several root causes of quantization loss and proposed alternatives that do not rely on per-channel or training-aware approaches. Abstract

Backus (1962) developed his technique for homogenization of a layered structure solely within the context of linear elastic theory. In this paper we propose an extended use of Backus average for finitely deformed materials of a layered structure. We attempt to use two different approaches to account for large deformations. The first approach utilizes the connections between linear and nonlinear transverse elasticity. For the second approach we use a formulation based on prestress in the material. Abstract

We derive a general expression for the deformation-gradient tensor by invoking the standard definition of a gradient of a vector field in curvilinear coordinates. This expression shows the connection between the standard definition of a gradient of a vector field and the deformation gradient tensor in continuum mechanics. We illustrate its application in the context of problems discussed by Ogden [1997].

34. Bifurcation of thick-walled electroelastic cylindrical and spherical shells at finite deformation

Abstract

In this dissertation we consider some boundary value and stability problems for electro-active soft rubberlike materials which withstand finite deformations elastically. In the beginning we consider in detail the problem of finite deformation of a pressurized electroelastic circular cylindrical tube with closed ends with compliant electrodes at its curved boundaries. Expressions for the dependence of the pressure and reduced axial load on the deformation and a potential difference between the electrodes, or uniform surface charge distributions, are obtained in respect of a general isotropic electroelastic energy function. To illustrate the behaviour of the tube specific forms of energy functions accounting for different mechanical properties coupled with a deformation independent quadratic dependence on the electric field are used for numerical purposes, for a given potential difference and separately for a given charge distribution. Numerical dependences of the non-dimensional pressure and reduced axial load on the deformation are obtained for the considered energy functions. Results are then given for the thin-walled approximation as a limiting case of a thick-walled cylindrical tube without restriction on the energy function. The theory provides a general basis for the detailed analysis of the electroelastic response of tubular dielectric elastomer actuators, which is illustrated for a fixed axial load in the absence of internal pressure and fixed internal pressure in the absence of an applied axial load. Using the theory of small incremental electroelastic deformations superimposed on an electroelastic finitely deformed body, we then look for solutions of underlying configurations which are different from perfect cylindrical shape of the tube. First, we consider prismatic bifurcations. We obtain the solutions which show that for neo-Hookean electroelastic material prismatic modes of bifurcation become possible under inflation. This result is different from the pure mechanical case considered previously in Haughton and Ogden (1979), because in Haughton and Ogden (1979) prismatic bifurcation modes were found only for an externally pressurised tube. Second, we consider axisymmetric bifurcations, and we obtain results for neo-Hookean and Mooney-Rivlin electroelastic energy functions. Our solutions show that in the presence of an electric field the electroelastic tube become more unstable: axisymmetric bifurcations become possible at lower values of circumferential stretches as compared with the values of circumferential stretches found for analogous problems solved for electromechanically indifferent materials, or equivalently, when electric field is not present. Within similar lines we consider the bifurcation of a thick-walled electroelastic spherical shell with compliant electrodes at its curved boundaries under internal and external pressure. The solutions obtained for neo-Hookean electroelastic energy function show that in some cases axisymmetric modes of bifurcation become possible under inflation in the presence of electric field.

Abstract

Freezing and thawing processes can change the structure of frozen soil and reduce the mechanical properties, thus affecting the stability of engineering infrastructures built in frozen soil. Due to the different settings of freeze-thaw cycles, a large number of experimental results cannot be effectively compared and analyzed. In addition, estimating the soil mechanical characteristics under freeze-thaw action has also become a research difficulty. In this paper, based on the frozen soil genetic creep theory, a spherical indenter is developed, and a freeze-thaw cycle–physical time analogy method is proposed. Using the number of cycles (numbers of freeze-thaw cycles) and the duration time (physical time–minutes), we can obtain the long-term strength curve family of the frozen soil and mapping the curve family into the same stress space to achieve the normalized strength curve, and thus we can predict the long-term deformation and shear strength. Finally, two soil samples are selected for testing, and the relevant equations for predicting the long-term shear strength are obtained. This method has important theoretical significance for the comparative study on the mechanical behavior of frozen soils under freeze-thaw actions. It also has value for engineering practice and stability analysis of infrastructures built in cold regions.

46. Classification of KdV vessels with constant parameters and two dimensional outer space

Abstract

In this article we classify vessels producing solutions of some completely integrable PDEs, presenting a \textit{unified} approach for them. The classification includes such important examples as Korteweg-de Vries (KdV) and evolutionary Non Linear Schr\" odingier (ENLS) equations. In fact, employing basic matrix algebra techniques it is shown that there are exactly two canonical forms of such vessels, so that each canonical form generalize either KdV or ENLS equations. Particularly, Dirac canonical systems, whose evolution was recently inserted into the vessel theory, are shown to be equivalent to the ENLS equation in the sense of vessels. This work is important as a first step to classification of completely integrable PDEs, which are solvable by the theory of vessels. We note that a recent paper of the author, published in Journal of Mathematical Physics, showed that initial value problem with analytic initial potential for the KdV equation has at least a "narrowing" in time solution. The presented classification, inherits this idea and a similar theorem can be easily proved for the presented PDEs. Finally, the the resuts of the work serve as a basis for the investigation of the following problems: 1. hierarchy of the generalized KdV, ENLS equations (by generalizing the vessel equations), 2. new completely integrable PDEs (by changing the dimension of the outer space), 3. addressing the question of integrability of a given arbitrary PDE (the future classification will create a list of solvable by vessels equations, which may eventually include many existing classes of PDEs).

Analytic coefficients fits into this setting, significantly expanding the class of functions for which the inverse scattering exist. Abstract

We present a theory of Sturm-Liouville non-symmetric vessels, realizing an inverse scattering theory for the Sturm-Liouville operator with analytic potentials on the line. This construction is equivalent to the construction of a matrix spectral measure for the Sturm-Liouville operator, defined with an analytic potential on the line. Evolving such vessels we generate KdV vessels, realizing solutions of the KdV equation. As a consequence, we prove the following theorem: Suppose that q(x) is an analytic function on R. There exists a KdV vessel, which exists on a subset O of the plane. For each real x there exists positive T_x such that $\{x\}\times [-T_x,T_x]$ is in O. The potential q(x) is realized by the vessel for t=0. Since we also show that if q(x,t) is a solution of the KdV equation on a strip $R\times[0,T]$, then there exists a vessel, realizing it, the theory of vessels becomes a universal tool to study this problem. Finally, we notice that the idea of the proof applies to a similar existence of a solution for evolutionary NLS and Boussinesq equations, since both of these equations possess vessel constructions.

Abstract

In this work we present a solution of the Boussinesq equation. The derived formulas include solitons, Schwartz class solutions and solutions, possessing singularities on a closed set Z of the (x,t) domain, obtained from the zeros of the tau function. The idea for solving the Boussinesq equation is identical to the (unified) idea of solving the KdV and the evolutionary NLS equations: we use a theory of evolutionary vessels. But a more powerful theory of non-symmetric evolutionary vessels is presented, inserting flexibility into the construction and allowing to deal with complex-valued solutions. A powerful scattering theory of Deift-Tomei-Trubowitz for a three dimensional operator, which is used to solve the Boussinesq equation, fits into our setting only in a particular case. On the other hand, we create a much wider class of solutions of the Boussinesq equation with singularities on a closed set $Z$.
