Abstract

Em projetos de obras hidráulicas, é necessária a estimativa da chuva intensa adequada à realidade técnico-financeira dos projetos, para posterior cálculo de vazões máximas. O uso da equação de chuvas intensas é a forma mais usual para estimativa da chuva de projeto. No entanto, há dificuldade em obtê-la para locais desprovidos de dados pluviométricos, o que pode ser superado mediante técnicas computacionais para a espacialização dos seus parâmetros. Para isto, pode-se trabalhar com procedimentos estatísticos para interpolação dos parâmetros com base em estações meteorológicas vizinhas ao local. Objetivou-se, neste trabalho, comparar os dois procedimentos estatísticos mais exatos, conforme já constatado em outras aplicações físicas, que são a krigagem (interpolador geoestatístico) e o inverso do quadrado da distância, para interpolação dos parâmetros da equação de chuvas intensas. Utilizaram-se 140 estações meteorológicas do estado de São Paulo, as quais dispõem da respectiva equação de chuvas intensas estimada com base em dados pluviométricos, consideradas como ideais. Destas, 126 foram utilizadas para estudo da dependência espacial dos parâmetros e 14 para comparação de erros nas estimativas da chuva intensa. Constatou-se que ambos os métodos apresentaram boa precisão, mas a krigagem produziu menores erros médios para 11 estações, verificando-se melhorias consideráveis em especial para tempos de retorno e tempos de duração da precipitação usuais em projetos em pequenas bacias hidrográficas, podendo-se sugerir este método como o mais adequado.

Abstract

To collect data for the study of charm particle decays, we built a high speed data acquisition system for use with the E791 magnetic spectrometer at Fermilab. The DA system read out 24000 channels in 50 uS. Events were accepted at the rate of 9000 per second. Eight large FIFOs were used to buffer event segments, which were then compressed and formatted by 54 processors housed in 6 VME crates. Data was written continuously to 42 Exabyte tape drives at the rate of 9.6 Mb/s. During the 1991 fixed target run at Fermilab, 20 billion physics events were recorded on 24000 8 mm tapes; this 50 Tb (Terabyte) data set is now being analyzed., Comment: 18 pages and 4 figures

24. Prevalence of musculoskeletal complaints and health-related quality of life in a Maroon and Kalinya Indigenous rural village in Suriname.

Abstract

PURPOSE: Musculoskeletal complaints (MSCs), a leading contributor to disability worldwide, have a major impact on health-related quality of life (HRQoL). Poor general health related to lifestyle factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption and physical inactivity can lead to a higher risk to suffer MSCs. For minority groups in Suriname such as the Maroons and the Indigenous peoples no research has been conducted regarding prevalence of MSCs, HRQoL and various lifestyle factors. The aims were to determine the prevalence of MSCs and HRQoL in two rural tribal villages in the forested interior of Suriname and to identify various lifestyle factors associated with HRQoL in these communities. METHOD: This was a cross-sectional community-based study using the Community Oriented Program for the Control of Rheumatic Diseases stage 1, phase 1 & 2 methodology in Goejaba, a Maroon village and Galibi, an Indigenous rural village. Sociodemographic data, self-reported comorbidities, past MSCs (for longer than seven days), lifestyle factors including smoking, alcohol use, body mass index (BMI) and physical activity (PA), and HRQoL (using the 36-item Short Form Survey (SF-36)) data were gathered among 153 Indigenous individuals in Galibi, and 516 Maroons in Goejaba. Regression models were constructed to explore associations between presence of MSCs, lifestyle factors and HRQoL. RESULTS: High prevalence rates for past MSCs were reported in Galibi (72.4%) and Goejaba (58.3%). In both communities, respondents with MSCs reported significantly worse HRQoL than persons without MSCs. MSCs and the presence of comorbidities had a strong negative association with HRQoL, whereas PA positively influenced the physical and mental health domains of the SF-36. Smoking, alcohol use and BMI showed no association with HRQoL. CONCLUSIONS: In this first study, a high prevalence for MSCs was reported in an Indigenous and Maroon rural community in Suriname. This book uses text and photographs to highlight a transdisciplinary research project (2018-2022) about artisanal and small-scale gold mining that involved transdisciplinary collaboration between academics, artists, and gold miners. With the title Exploring Transformations to Sustainability in Artisanal and Small-scale Gold Mining: Trans-regional and Multi-Actor Perspectives, or Gold Matters for short, the project examined whether and how societal transformations towards sustainable mining futures are possible in artisanal and small-scale gold mining. It brought together a multi-national team to conduct research in Brazil, Suriname, Ghana, Burkina Faso, Guinea Conakry, and Uganda.

Abstract

Introduction: The oral health (OH) of care-dependent older people is generally poor. Since caregivers are mainly responsible for older people's daily care, they can be considered important intermediaries to improve their OH by performing regular OH assessments. The interRAI instruments are introduced in 37 countries to assess care needs and facilitate care planning across different health care settings. The oral health section (OHS) within the interRAI instrument used in long-term care facilities was optimized for the Belgian context to identify residents who need assistance with daily oral care and/or need to be referred to a dentist. This Delphi study evaluated whether the OHS is also relevant and useful in other countries and modified the OHS accordingly until an international consensus was reached. Participants were experts in OH for older people. During 2 rounds of online questionnaires, experts rated the content, assessment process, triggering of Clinical Assessment Protocols, and accompanying guidelines and instruction videos of the optimized OHS. Based on the experts' comments and suggestions collected during the first round, the OHS was adjusted and presented to the experts in the second round for re-evaluation. The first and second questionnaires were completed by 48 and 42 oral health experts from 29 and 27 countries where the interRAI instruments are introduced, respectively. Five experts from 5 countries where interRAI is not introduced also participated in both rounds. After the second round, a consensus of over 86% was reached on all criteria. International consensus on the OHS was reached, considering national and cultural differences that may affect OH. The next step in this research is to evaluate the assessment process to identify potential barriers and facilitators to achieving reliable OH assessments internationally. Abstract

Background: In allergic rhinitis, a relevant outcome providing information on the effectiveness of interventions is needed. In MASK-air (Mobile Airways Sentinel Network), a visual analogue scale (VAS) for work is used as a relevant outcome. This study aimed to assess the performance of the work VAS work by comparing VAS work with other VAS measurements and symptom-medication scores obtained concurrently. Methods: All consecutive MASK-air users in 23 countries from 1 June 2016 to 31 October 2018 were included (14 189 users; 205 904 days). Geolocalized users self-assessed daily symptom control using the touchscreen functionality on their smart phone to click on VAS scores (ranging from 0 to 100) for overall symptoms (global), nose, eyes, asthma and work. Two symptom-medication scores were used: the modified EAACI CSMS score and the MASK control score for rhinitis. To assess data quality, the intra-individual response variability (IRV) index was calculated. Results: A strong correlation was observed between VAS work and other VAS. The highest levels for correlation with VAS work and variance explained in VAS work were found with VAS global, followed by VAS nose, eye and asthma. In comparison with VAS global, the mCSMS and MASK control score showed a lower correlation with VAS work. Results are unlikely to be explained by a low quality of data arising from repeated VAS measures. Conclusions: VAS work correlates with other outcomes (VAS global, nose, eye and asthma) but less well with a symptom-medication score. Abstract

AIMS: Mobile Airways Sentinel NetworK (MASK) belongs to the Fondation Partenariale MACVIA-LR of Montpellier, France and aims to provide an active and healthy life to rhinitis sufferers and to those with asthma multimorbidity across the life cycle, whatever their gender or socio-economic status, in order to reduce health and social inequities incurred by the disease and to improve the digital transformation of health and care. The ultimate goal is to change the management strategy in chronic diseases. METHODS: MASK implements ICT technologies for individualized and predictive medicine to develop novel care pathways by a multi-disciplinary group centred around the patients. STAKEHOLDERS: Include patients, health care professionals (pharmacists and physicians), authorities, patient's associations, private and public sectors. RESULTS: MASK is deployed in 23 countries and 17 languages. 26,000 users have registered. EU GRANTS 2018: MASK is participating in EU projects (POLLAR: impact of air POLLution in Asthma and Rhinitis, EIT Health, DigitalHealthEurope, Euriphi and Vigour). LESSONS LEARNT: (i) Adherence to treatment is the major problem of allergic disease, (ii) Self-management strategies should be considerably expanded (behavioural), (iii) Change management is essential in allergic diseases, (iv) Education strategies should be reconsidered using a patient-centred approach and (v) Lessons learnt for allergic diseases can be expanded to chronic diseases. ispartof: CLINICAL AND TRANSLATIONAL ALLERGY vol:9 issue:1 ispartof: location:England status: published
