Waring problem for homogeneus forms asks for additive decomposition of a form $f$ into powers of linear forms. A classical problem is to determine when such a decomposition is unique. In this note I refine the work in arXiv:math/0406288v1 and answer this question under a divisibility assumption. The paper explores the birational geometry of terminal quartic 3-folds. In doing this I develop a new approach to study maximal singularities with positive dimensional centers. The number of apparent double points of a smooth, irreducible projective variety $X$ of dimension $n$ in $\Proj^{2n+1}$ is the number of secant lines to $X$ passing through the general point of $\Proj^{2n+1}$. This classical notion dates back to Severi. In the present paper we classify smooth varieties of dimension at most three having one apparent double point. In this Lecture Notes we present, in a sufficiently self contained way, our contributions and interests in the field of Minimal Model Theory. We study Fano-Mori spaces, both from the biregular and the birational point of view. For the former we recall and develop Kawamata's Base Point Free technique and some of Mori's deformation arguments. For the latter we lean on Sarkisov and #-Minimal Model Programs. In writing these notes we want to give our point of view on this area of research. We are not trying to give a treatment of the whole subject. This is the unabridged web version of the paper that will be published on the American Journal of Mathematics. In this paper, we study the birational geometry of certain examples of mildly singular quartic 3-folds. A quartic 3-fold is an example of a Fano variety, that is, a variety $X$ with ample anticanonical sheaf $\O_X(-K_X)$. From the point of view of birational geometry they basically fall within two classes: either $X$ is ``close to being rational'', and then it has very many biregularly distinct birational models as a Fano 3-fold, or, at the other extreme, $X$ has a unique model and it is often even true that every birational selfmap of $X$ is biregular. We report ground state energies and structural properties for small helium clusters (4He) containing an H- impurity computed by means of variational and diffusion Monte Carlo methods. Except for 4He_2H- that has a noticeable contribution from collinear geometries where the H- impurity lies between the two 4He atoms, our results show that our 4He_NH- clusters have a compact 4He_N subsystem that binds the H- impurity on its surface. The results for $N\geq 3$ can be interpreted invoking the different features of the minima of the He-He and He-H- interaction potentials., Comment: 12 pages, 7 Ps figures

A complex manifold $X$ of dimension $n$ together with an ample vector bundle $E$ on it will be called a {\sf generalized polarized variety}. The adjoint bundle of the pair $(X,E)$ is the line bundle $K_X + det(E)$. We study the positivity (the nefness or ampleness) of the adjoint bundle in the case $r := rank (E) = (n-2)$. If $r\geq (n-1)$ this was previously done in a series of paper by Ye-Zhang, Fujita, Andreatta-Ballico-Wisniewski. If $K_X+detE$ is nef, then by the Kawamata-Shokurov base point free theorem, it supports a contraction; i.e. a map $\pi :X \longrightarrow W$ from $X$ onto a normal projective variety $W$ with connected fiber and such that $K_X + det(E) = \pi^*H$, for some ample line bundle $H$ on $W$. We describe those contractions for which $dimF \leq (r-1)$. We extend this result to the case in which $X$ has log terminal singualarities. In particular this gives the Mukai's conjecture1 for singular varieties. We consider also the case in which $dimF = r$ for every fibers and $\pi$ is birational.
