1. An implicit staggered algorithm for CPFEM-based analysis of aluminum

Abstract

In this paper, we propose an implicit staggered algorithm for crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) which makes use of dynamic relaxation at the constitutive integration level. An uncoupled version of the constitutive system consists of a multi-surface flow law complemented by an evolution law for the hardening variables. Since a saturation law is adopted for hardening, a sequence of nonlinear iteration followed by a linear system is feasible. To tie the constitutive unknowns, the dynamic relaxation method is adopted. A Green-Naghdi plasticity model is adopted based on the Hencky strain calculated using a $[2/2]$ Pad\'e approximation. For the incompressible case, the approximation error is calculated exactly. A enhanced-assumed strain (EAS) element technology is adopted, which was found to be especially suited to localization problems such as the ones resulting from crystal plasticity plane slipping. Analysis of the results shows significant reduction of drift and well defined localization without spurious modes or hourglassing.

Abstract

The work presented in this paper regards the improvement of a housekeeping system for data acquisition of a suborbital vehicle (VIRIATO rocket or launcher). The specifications regarding the vehicle are presented and hardware is chosen accordingly, considering commercial off-the-shelf components. Mechanical and thermal simulations are performed regarding the designed system and a physical prototype is manufactured, assembled and programmed. Functional and field test results resorting to unmanned aerial vehicles, as well as the system's integration within VIRIATO project's mock-up vehicle, are presented. These tests demonstrate the viability of this system as an independent data acquisition system, and simulation results show that commercial off-the-shelf components have the capability of surviving expected launch environments. Abstract

In the area of aviation safety, the importance of human factors is indisputable. This research endeavors to assess the importance of human factors in predicting fatalities during aviation mishaps. Utilizing reports from the Aviation Safety Network Database, encompassing 1105 accidents and incidents spanning from 2007 to 2016, neural networks were trained to forecast the probability of fatalities. Our findings underscore that the human factors involved, by themselves, can yield strong predictions. As a term of comparison, other variables (type of occurrence, flight phase, and aircraft fate) were used as predictors, with poorer results; by combining these variables with human factors, the prediction is only marginally better, if at all, than that based on human factors alone. So, although these supplementary variables can marginally benefit the predictive results derived from human factors, their contribution remains minimal. Consequently, this study illuminates the paramount importance of human factors in influencing aviation fatalities, guiding stakeholders on the immediate interventions and investments which are most warranted to prevent them. Abstract

Rules and regulations for accident mitigation have been implemented between all players. It is necessary to use new technologies and resources for human factors to mitigate future accidents to decrease accidents. It has been verified that accidents by sabotage are currently non-existent and that most of the fatalities are during the flight and in the runway approach phase. Severe accidents with associated fatalities are a small number that tend to decrease over time. Human errors, although with all the mitigations over time, are still the most significant cause of accidents; although accidents have decreased, other factors may be related to this type of error, such as the lack of personnel for the operation of a flight. Accidents can also be related to other factors, such as economic factors. GDP growth is positively correlated with accidents, and inflation is negatively correlated. It is also found that the inflation factor is also related to the number of flights due to a lack of demand. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
