The occurrence of Cr-bearing oxide phases as inclusions in diamonds and in extraterrestrial materials has the potential to serve as an indicator of formation conditions. However, such an application requires detailed knowledge of phase stabilities and the influence that Cr may have on its stability. To this end, the incorporation of Cr in high-pressure post-spinel Fe–Mg oxide phases was experimentally investigated at pressures of 14–22 GPa and temperatures between 1100 and 1600 °C using a multi-anvil press. We find that neither the Fe3Cr2O6 nor the Mg3Cr2O6 endmember composition is stable over the expected range of pressure and temperature where Fe5O6 itself is known to be stable. Further experiments along the Fe32+Fe23+O6–Fe32+Cr2O6 binary indicate only small amounts of Cr substitution are possible: ∼ 0.12 cations Cr per formula unit or ∼ 6 mol % Fe32+Cr2O6 component. In contrast, complete solid solution is apparent across both the Fe22+(Cr,Fe3+)2O5 and the Mg2(Cr,Fe3+)2O5 binaries, and there are indications of complete solution in the entire (Mg,Fe2+)2(Cr,Fe3+)2O5 quaternary system. The O5-structured phase usually coexists with (Fe,Mg)O. At 16–20 GPa, a post-spinel phase with O4 stoichiometry was occasionally encountered, having either a modified Ca-ferrite- (mCF-FeCr2O4) or a Ca-titanate-type (CT-MgCr2O4) structure. In one high-temperature experiment at 1600 °C, an unquenchable Mg-rich phase with a reconstructed Mg4Fe23+O7 stoichiometry occurred together with Mg2(Cr,Fe3+)2O5. In one experiment at 1100 °C and 16 GPa with a bulk composition of Mg2(Cr0.6,Fe0.43+)2O5, an assemblage of O5 phase + eskolaite–hematite solid solution + periclase was obtained together with minor amounts of the CT-type phase and a β-(Cr,Fe)OOH phase. The occurrence of these two minor phases in this low-temperature experiment is an indicator of variable reaction kinetics amongst the starting materials, which caused chemical heterogeneities to develop at the onset of the experiment. The structural systematics of Fe22+(Cr,Fe3+)2O5 and (Fe2+,Mg)2(Cr,Fe3+)2O5 solid solutions were investigated. It is notable that the Fe3+ and Cr endmembers have somewhat different crystal structures, belonging to space groups Cmcm (no. 63) and Pbam (no. 55), respectively. The phase transition occurs around the midpoint of the Fe3+–Cr joins. In spite of complexities in the behavior of the unit-cell parameters, the variation in molar volume with composition deviates only slightly from linearity. Wüstite and periclase coexisting in our experiments reveal the incorporation of up to 9 wt % and 25 wt % Cr2O3, respectively. This is consistent with the minor Cr contents reported for some ferropericlase inclusions in natural diamond. The limited solubility of other cations in Fe5O6 limits the likelihood of it being an accessory phase in the Earth's deep upper mantle and transition zone, except in Fe-rich environments. In contrast, the O5 phase appears to be more flexible in accommodating a range of divalent and trivalent cations, suggesting that this phase is more likely to be stabilized, potentially where redox reactions related to diamond formation occur.

Quantification of trace element concentrations in human and animal tissues has acquired great importance in the last few years, considering the pivotal role of these elements in several physiological and pathological processes. Stem cell-based therapy implementation relies heavily on advancements in cell tracking. The present research has been designed to develop a gold nanorod (AuNR) labeling protocol applied to amniotic epithelial cells (AECs) leveraging the pro-regenerative properties of this placental stem cell source which is widely used for both human and veterinary biomedical regenerative applications, although not yet exploited with tracking technologies. Ovine AECs, in native or induced mesenchymal (mAECs) phenotypes via epithelial–mesenchymal transition (EMT), served as the model. Initially, various uptake methods validated on other sources of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) were assessed on mAECs before optimization for AECs. Furthermore, the protocol was implemented by adopting the biological strategy of MitoCeption to improve endocytosis. The results indicate that the most efficient, affordable, and easy protocol leading to internalization of AuNRs in living mAECs recognized the combination of the one-step uptake condition (cell in suspension), centrifugation-mediated internalization method (G-force) and MitoCeption (mitochondrial isolated from mAECs). This protocol produced labeled vital mAECs within minutes, suitable for preclinical and clinical trials. The optimized protocol has the potential to yield feasible labeled amniotic-derived cells for biomedical purposes: up to 10 million starting from a single amniotic membrane. Similar and even higher efficiency was found when the protocol was applied to ovine and human AECs, thereby demonstrating the transferability of the method to cells of different phenotypes and species-specificity, hence validating its great potential for the development of improved biomedical applications in cell-based therapy and diagnostic imaging. Consumers’ appreciation of wines is mainly driven by their aroma, which is the most important organoleptic characteristic and key attribute. The volatile bouquet derives from the grape berries and from the processing phases of vinification. In the present study, the volatile emission of six grapevine cultivars has been analysed through four phases of vinification: the headspaces of crushed grapes, fermented must, new wine (2 months old), and wine (7 months old) have been sampled and analysed. This showed the evolution of the volatile compounds based on the chemical and mechanical processes involved in the specific vinification phase. Chemometric tools (hierarchical cluster and principal component analyses) have revealed that samples gather in statistical groups based on the vinification phase they belong to, though they maintain an aroma composition that is typical of the grape berry of origin.

Background: Brucellosis is a neglected debilitating zoonosis widely recognized as an occupational health hazard. The seroprevalence of human anti-Brucella antibodies in high-risk populations, as well as their risk factors, have not been well-documented in Zambia. This study aimed at estimating the Brucella seroprevalence in herdsmen and abattoir workers and assess the associated risk factors.Methods: A cross-sectional seroepidemiological study was carried out between May and December 2020 among abattoir workers and herdsmen in Namwala, Monze and Choma districts of Southern Province in Zambia. Seroprevalence was assessed by indirect enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (i-ELISA) or competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (c-ELISA) while a questionnaire was administered to obtain epidemiological data.Results: A total of 153 individuals were recruited in the study. The overall Brucella seroprevalence was 20.3% (95% CI: 14.6–27.5). Seropositivity among herdsmen and abattoir workers was 14.4% (95% CI: 9.2–21.8) and 46.4%, (95% CI: 28.8–65.0), respectively. Comparable seropositive results among districts showed Namwala with 26.9%, which was the highest, seconded by Monze 19.0%, and the least was Choma with 11.36%, seropositivity. The multivariate logistic regression model showed that occupation, age category, and district of residence were predictors of being seropositive to Brucella spp. antibodies. The odds of abattoir workers being seropositive to Brucella antibodies were 8.6 (95% CI: 2.6–28.2) higher than that of herdsmen being the reference group. Hamatopeduncularia was erected with Hamatopeduncularis arii as the type species. This genus comprises monogenoidean species mostly found as ectoparasites of marine catfishes belonging to the Ariidae. There is a significant taxonomic ambiguity among Hamatopeduncularia species due to their morphological similarity, but so far only a few morphological studies have succeeded in addressing interspecific variation and relationships. Moreover, little molecular data is available for this genus. A multidisciplinary, integrated study consisting of morphological, morphometric and molecular analyses was conducted on different species of Hamatopeduncularia recovered from the gills of two marine catfishes, Arius jella Day and Plicofollis dussumieri (Valenciennes). Five species of Hamatopeduncularia, two of which represent new species, were investigated: H. arii, H. elongatum, H. thalassini, H. madhaviae sp. nov. and H. bifida sp. nov. Phylogenetic analysis was performed using the 18S rDNA sequence as a molecular marker. Abstract Background This paper describes the activities and the results obtained from a monitoring of contamination levels of some metals: lead (Pb), cadmium (Cd), mercury (Hg), total arsenic (Astot), vanadium (V), chromium (Cr), antimony (Sb), manganese (Mn) and aluminium (Al) in vegetable food cultivated or sold in local market, near Resit landfill in Giugliano (Campania region, Italy). This area, once well known like Campania felix for abundance and quality of food farming, supplies local, national and community markets. Unfortunately, in the last twenty years, this region has been involved in lots of illegal dumpings of hazardous and urban wastes, that have been periodically set to fire with possible health impact. For this reason it has been renamed as “Terra dei Fuochi” (“Land of Fires”). The aim of this study was the evaluation of the consumers exposure level to metals coming from the intake of likely contaminated vegetables and fruits. Results Vegetable and fruit samples was collected in November 2013 on fields and in February 2014 in local markets. One hundred and thirty-nine samples (peppers, eggplants, lettuces, strawberries and turnip greens) were analysed for metals: fifty-six samples from fields near Resit dump and eighty-three from local markets situated in neighboring provinces and in the southern Lazio. Metal concentrations in the investigated samples were determined by inductively coupled plasma – mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) or inductively coupled plasma – atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES) techniques applying validated and accredited analytical methods. Conclusions In all analysed matrices, the level of each investigated metal, highlighted a very low health risk for consumers. The metal contamination levels measured in this study do not show significant differences compared to relative background values.

Abstract Background The so-called “herbal highs” are substances derived from natural plants with effects on the central nervous system. Lisergamide, ergine or LSA is the basis of different types of drugs, which are in seeds of Ipomoea violacea, also known as Morning Glory, and other seeds. In our study we analysed the presence of lysergic acid amide (LSA) in seeds of Ipomoea violacea seized by the Italian Police, in others purchased through the Internet, and in other varieties of Ipomoea sold for ornamental purposes, to assess whether the actual consumption of ornamental seeds could contain hallucinogenic doses of LSA. Methods The analyses were conducted at the Laboratory of Forensic Toxicology of the Section of Legal Medicine of the University of Perugia, using GC/MSD system. For analysis, 300 mg of seeds (~8 seeds) from each specimen were chosen. Results Analysis revealed that 300 mg of Ipomoea violacea seeds resulting from police seizures, equivalent to approximately 8 seeds, contained a percentage of LSA equal to 0.062%. This finding is in agreement with what was indicated in literature, as the ingestion of 250 seeds would lead to a dose of approximately 6 mg of LSA, capable of provoking hallucinogenic effects. The analysis of 300 mg of Ipomoea Rubrocerulea seeds bought on the commercial marketdetected an average concentration of LSA of 0.011%. The Ipomoea mix contained a concentration of LSA about 10 times lower than that of seized Morning Glory seeds. Conclusion Seeds bought on the commercial market contained doses of LSA capable of provoking hallucinogenic effects. In the absence of data on the toxicity resulting from the ingestion of seeds for ornamental purposes, we believe that further research on the actual safety of ornamental seeds is necessary.

Abstract Background A considerable part of the global population is exposed to arsenic-contaminated drinking water which is the main source of inorganic arsenic(As) exposure in humans. Arsenic exposure interferes with the action of enzymes, essential cations, and transcriptional events in cells throughout the body, and a multitude of multisystemic non-cancer effects might ensue. The aim of our review was to evaluate the effects of arsenic contamination in drinking water on suicides rates. Methods A systematic literature search (English written literature) was conducted in electronic databases MEDLINE, SCOPUS. Evidences dating from 1999 till 2016 have been collected. A manual search of reference lists of included studies and review articles was successively performed. All references of the retrieved studies were also reviewed to avoid missing relevant publications. The key search terms included: “arsenic AND water AND suicide”. Results The literature search yielded 13 publications, but we identified 2 manuscripts available for this systematic review. The 2 studies included in the review, were published in 2015 and in 2017 and settled in Italy and Hungary. The levels of arsenic in the waters ranged from 0.016 μg/l to >50 μg/l. The findings of the two studies are conflicting, in fact Pompili et al. reported an apparently beneficial effect of arsenic on suicides rates, with an inverse correlation of arsenic concentration and local suicide rates, in contrast to a positive correlation with natural-cause mortality rates. Conclusions Our review led to conflicting results, so the diatribe about the real effects of arsenic intake of suicidal behaviors is still open. Therefore, we encourage other colleagues to conduct further studies in other locations in order to have more reliable results.

Brucellosis is an important zoonotic disease caused by members of the genus Brucella. Camel brucellosis has been reported in almost all camel-rearing countries in Africa and Asia. A cross-sectional study was conducted between February 2020 and February 2021 in Galkayo, Garowe, and Bosaso districts in the Puntland State of Somalia to investigate the seroprevalence and risk factors of brucellosis in camels. A competitive enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (c-ELISA) was used to detect anti-Brucella antibodies, while a structured questionnaire was used to collect epidemiological data. A total of 441 camel sera were screened against Brucella antibodies. Thirty-one (7%; 95% CI: 4.8–9.8%) samples were positive, and thirteen (54.2%; 95% CI: 32.8–74.4%) out of the twenty-four farms sampled had at least one seropositive animal. Galkayo district had the highest number of Brucella-seropositive camels (10.3%), followed by Bosaso district (8.6%), while Garowe district had the lowest number of seropositive camels (1.4%). The binary logistic regression model revealed that camels in Galkayo district (p = 0.015; OR: 9.428; 95% CI: 1.539–57.755), camels from large herd sizes of >50 animals (p = 0.019; OR: 5.822; 95% CI: 1.336–25.371), and those in contact with small ruminants (p = 0.011; OR: 10.941; 95% CI: 1.728–69.285) were significantly associated with seropositive cases of camel brucellosis in the Puntland State of Somalia. The present study shows that Brucella infections in camels are prevalent in the three districts covered by the study. This poses a public health risk, because milk from these camels is used for human consumption. Studies focusing on the isolation of Brucella strains in camels and investigating brucellosis in ruminants and humans are recommended in the study area. Validation of serological tests—including c-ELISA—for Brucella antibody detection in camels is also needed.

Presently, no device allows the status of foot ulcers to be continuously monitored when patients are not hospitalized. In this study, we describe a temperature and a pH sensor capable of monitoring diabetic foot and venous leg ulcers developed in the frame of the seventh framework program European Union project SWAN-iCare (smart wearable and autonomous negative pressure device for wound monitoring and therapy). Temperature is measured by exploiting the variations in the electrical resistance of a nanocomposite consisting of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and poly(styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene). The pH sensor used a graphene oxide (GO) layer that changes its electrical potential when pH changes. The temperature sensor has a sensitivity of ~85 Ω/°C in the range 25°C–50°C and a high repeatability (maximum standard deviation of 0.1% over seven repeated measurements). For a GO concentration of 4 mg/mL, the pH sensor has a sensitivity of ~42 mV/pH and high linearity (R2=0.99). Keywords: diabetic foot ulcer, wearable sensors, wound temperature, wound pH

Although its first definition dates back to more than a century ago, pH and its measurement are still studied for improving the performance of current sensors in everyday analysis. The gold standard is the glass electrode, but its intrinsic fragility and need of frequent calibration are pushing the research field towards alternative sensitive devices and materials. In this review, we describe the most recent optical, electrochemical, and transistor-based sensors to provide an overview on the status of the scientific efforts towards pH sensing.
