8. Essential oil composition of Salvia rosmarinus Spenn. wild samples collected from six sites and different seasonal periods in Elba Island (Tuscan Archipelago, Italy).

Abstract

The hydrodistilled essential oils from eighteen samples of Salvia rosmarinus Spenn. collected in six localities of Elba Island (Tuscany, Italy) during three different seasonal periods were analyzed by GC-MS for the first time. Fifty-five components were identified, representing 96.8–99.6% of the total chemical composition. All the tested essential oils were characterized by a high content of monoterpenes (oxygenated 49.2–80.3%; hydrocarbons 18.7–48.3%). Among them, 1,8-cineole (26.4–49.1%), α-pinene (4.5–34.8%), camphor (1.1–18.8%) and borneol (1.7–16.2%) were the main constituents. The high amount of 1,8-cineole/α-pinene/camphor/borneol may suggest the presence of an intermediate rosemary chemotype. Statistical analysis was also performed on the essential oil (EO) composition evidenced an expected difference depending on the collection seasons, to the geographical areas and soil composition. A comparison with the essential oil composition from S. rosmarinus collected in all the other islands of Tuscan Archipelago (Italy) was also reported, together with a Multivariate Statistical Analysis. Presently, no device allows the status of foot ulcers to be continuously monitored when patients are not hospitalized. In this study, we describe a temperature and a pH sensor capable of monitoring diabetic foot and venous leg ulcers developed in the frame of the seventh framework program European Union project SWAN-iCare (smart wearable and autonomous negative pressure device for wound monitoring and therapy). Temperature is measured by exploiting the variations in the electrical resistance of a nanocomposite consisting of multiwalled carbon nanotubes and poly(styrene-b-(ethylene-co-butylene)-b-styrene). The pH sensor used a graphene oxide (GO) layer that changes its electrical potential when pH changes. The temperature sensor has a sensitivity of ~85 Ω/°C in the range 25°C–50°C and a high repeatability (maximum standard deviation of 0.1% over seven repeated measurements). For a GO concentration of 4 mg/mL, the pH sensor has a sensitivity of ~42 mV/pH and high linearity (R2=0.99). Keywords: diabetic foot ulcer, wearable sensors, wound temperature, wound pH

Abstract

A tetra-azido calix[4]arene derivative has reacted with ethynyl tetra-O-benzyl-C-galactoside in the presence of CuI and i-[Pr.sub.2]EtN in three different ionic liquids. The reactions are performed by thermal and microwave dielectric heating and the click CuAAC in ionic liquids is a complementary green method to that using water as a solvent.

The thermodynamic study of the copper(I)-catalyzed azide-alkyne click reaction in ionic liquids (ILs) is reported. The reaction involves cycloaddtion of a sugar azide with sugar acetylene in presence of 10 ILs as well as in standard molecular solvents (toluene and DMF) to yield 1,4-disubstituted triazole-linked C-disaccharide.

Abstract

The volatiles emitted in vivo by different organs (leaf, bud flower, flower, green and red fruits) of Ziziphus jujuba were analysed using HS-SPME-GC/MS. A total of 144 compounds were identified corresponding to 94.6-99.4% of the whole aroma profile of jujube samples. The main constituents detected were (E, E)-α-farnesene, (E)-β-ocimene, perillene, γ-terpinene, cis-sabinene-hydrate, trans-sabinene-hydrate and 4-terpineol. The SPME analyses of the collected samples showed different patterns of emission and can contribute to understand their ecological interactions and fruit production management. Abstract

Two analytical procedures are presented for the determination of the total content and unbound fraction of both warfarin and warfarin alcohols in human plasma. Chromatographic separation was carried out in isocratic conditions at 25. °C on a C-18 reversed-phase column with a mobile phase consisting of a 70% buffer phosphate 25. mM at pH. = 7, 25% methanol and 5% acetonitrile at a flow rate of 1.2. mL/min. Fluorescence detection was performed at 390. nm (excitation wavelength 310. nm). Neither method showed any detectable interference or matrix effect. Inter-day recovery of the total warfarin and warfarin alcohols at a concentration level of 1000. ng/mL was 89. ±. 3% and 73. ±. 3%, respectively, whereas for their unbound fraction (at a concentration level of 10. ng/mL) was 66. ±. 8% and 90. ±. 7%, respectively. The intra- and inter-day precision (assessed as relative standard deviation) was <10% for both methods. The limits of detection were 0.4 and 0.2. ng/mL for warfarin and warfarin alcohols, respectively. The methods were successfully applied to a pooled plasma sample obtained from 69 patients undergoing warfarin therapy. © 2013 Elsevier B.V
