Abstract

The socio-emotional wealth perspective is a framework widely used to examine managerial decisions, particularly within the field of family business. We evaluate, refine, and validate the FIBER 27-item scale developed by Berrone et al. (2012) as a psychometric instrument to measure the socioemotional wealth construct (SEW), defined as affective endowment embedded by family owners in their business. The findings suggest that SEW is a superordinate multidimensional construct that captures socioemotional utilities in family firms and their impact on financial performance.

Abstract

One of the most devastating complications of facial filler injection is sudden ischemic blindness. However, its mechanisms and predisposing factors are poorly understood. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prevalence of external carotid artery (ECA) to ophthalmic artery (OA) anterograde flow in patients with internal carotid artery (ICA) stenosis and in a control population without carotid disease. In this cross-sectional cohort study, two groups of patients who underwent catheter cerebral angiography over a 5-year period were identified: patients with symptomatic ICA stenosis and a control group of patients with refractory epistaxis undergoing embolization. Angiograms were reviewed by an interventional neuroradiologist. The primary outcome measure was the presence of ECA to OA flow, defined as choroidal blush before filling of the circle of Willis. Secondary outcome measures included the percentage and location of ICA stenosis and ECA anastomotic branches involved. The study included 149 patients with ICA stenosis and 69 control patients. ECA to OA flow was more prevalent in patients with ICA stenosis (34.9%) compared to controls (2.9%) (p <.001). Logistic regression demonstrated that for each 10% increase in ICA stenosis over 70%, there was 2.8 times increased risk of ECA to OA flow (p <.001). ECA to ICA anterograde flow can be demonstrated in approximately 3% of control patients and in over 1/3 of patients with symptomatic carotid stenosis. This provides a plausible pathway for small filler particles to pass with blood flow from the facial to the ophthalmic circulation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

BackgroundInformation on tuberculosis (TB) and coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is still limited. The aim of this study was to describe the features of the TB/COVID-19 co-infected individuals from a prospective, anonymised, multicountry register-based cohort with special focus on the determinants of mortality and other outcomes.MethodsWe enrolled all patients of any age with either active TB or previous TB and COVID-19. 172 centres from 34 countries provided individual data on 767 TB-COVID-19 co-infected patients, (>50% population-based).ResultsOf 767 patients, 553 (74.0%) out of 747 had TB before COVID-19 (including 234 out of 747 with previous TB), 71 (9.5%) out of 747 had COVID-19 first and 123 (16.5%) out of 747 had both diseases diagnosed within the same week (n=35 (4.6%) on the same day). 85 (11.08%) out of 767 patients died (41 (14.2%) out of 289 in Europe and 44 (9.2%) out of 478 outside Europe; p=0.03): 42 (49.4%) from COVID-19, 31 (36.5%) from COVID-19 and TB, one (1.2%) from TB and 11 from other causes. In the univariate analysis on mortality the following variables reached statistical significance: age, male gender, having more than one comorbidity, diabetes mellitus, cardiovascular disease, chronic respiratory disease, chronic renal disease, presence of key symptoms, invasive ventilation and hospitalisation due to COVID-19. The final multivariable logistic regression model included age, male gender and invasive ventilation as independent contributors to mortality.ConclusionThe data suggest that TB and COVID-19 are a “cursed duet” and need immediate attention. TB should be considered a risk factor for severe COVID disease and patients with TB should be prioritised for COVID-19 preventative efforts, including vaccination.

Abstract

We contend that the exclusive focus on the English language in scientific research might hinder effective communication between scientists and practitioners or policy makers whose mother tongue is non-English. This barrier in scientific knowledge and data transfer likely leads to significant knowledge gaps and may create biases when providing global patterns in many fields of science. To demonstrate this, we compiled data on the global economic costs of invasive alien species reported in 15 non-English languages. We compared it with equivalent data from English documents (i.e., the InvaCost database, the most up-to-date repository of invasion costs globally). The comparison of both databases (~7500 entries in total) revealed that non-English sources: (i) capture a greater amount of data than English sources alone (2500 vs. 2396 cost entries respectively); (ii) add 249 invasive species and 15 countries to those reported by English literature, and (iii) increase the global cost estimate of invasions by 16.6% (i.e., US$ 214 billion added to 1.288 trillion estimated from the English database). Additionally, 2712 cost entries — not directly comparable to the English database — were directly obtained from practitioners, revealing the value of communication between scientists and practitioners. Moreover, we demonstrated how gaps caused by overlooking non-English data resulted in significant biases in the distribution of costs across space, taxonomic groups, types of cost, and impacted sectors. Specifically, costs from Europe, at the local scale, and particularly pertaining to management, were largely under-represented in the English database. Thus, combining scientific data from English and non-English sources proves fundamental and enhances data completeness. Abstract

Biological invasions continue to threaten the stability of ecosystems and societies that are dependent on their services. Whilst the ecological impacts of invasive alien species (IAS) have been widely reported in recent decades, there remains a paucity of information concerning their economic impacts. Europe has strong trade and transport links with the rest of the world, facilitating hundreds of IAS incursions, and largely centralised decision-making frameworks. The present study is the first comprehensive and detailed effort that quantifies the costs of IAS collectively across European countries and examines temporal trends in these data. In addition, the distributions of costs across countries, socioeconomic sectors and taxonomic groups are examined, as are socio-economic correlates of management and damage costs. Total costs of IAS in Europe summed to US$140.20 billion (or €116.61 billion) between 1960 and 2020, with the majority (60%) being damage-related and impacting multiple sectors. Costs were also geographically widespread but dominated by impacts in large western and central European countries, i.e. the UK, Spain, France, and Germany. Human population size, land area, GDP, and tourism were significant predictors of invasion costs, with management costs additionally predicted by numbers of introduced species, research effort and trade. Temporally, invasion costs have increased exponentially through time, with up to US$23.58 billion (€19.64 billion) in 2013, and US$139.56 billion (€116.24 billion) in impacts extrapolated in 2020. Importantly, although these costs are substantial, there remain knowledge gaps on several geographic and taxonomic scales, indicating that these costs are severely underestimated. We, thus, urge increased and improved cost reporting for economic impacts of IAS and coordinated international action to prevent further spread and mitigate impacts of IAS populations.

Abstract

Pechini method was used in order to obtain fine ceramic and single-phase powders for a lead-free ferroelectric system 0,97[(Bi1/2Na1/2)1-x(Bi1/2K1/2)xTiO3]-0,03[(Na1/2K1/2)NbO3] or BNKT-KNN (x = 0.00, 0.18, 0.21, 0.24, 0.27). This method allowed obtaining powders with 100 % perovskite phase, which was confirmed by X-ray diffraction, for this particular system in all the studied stoichiometries using temperature as low as 600 ºC. The effects on the bonds present in the structure due to variation of the stoichiometry, Na-K, were determined using infrared spectroscopy, FT-IR. Irregular nanoparticles were observed by scanning electron microscopy.El método Pechini fue utilizado para obtener polvos cerámicos finos y monofásicos del sistema ferroeléctrico libre de plomo 0,97[(Bi1/2Na1/2)1-x(Bi1/2K1/2)xTiO3]-0,03[(Na1/2K1/2)NbO3] ó BNKT-KNN (x = 0.00, 0.18, 0.21, 0.24, 0.27). Este método permitió la obtención de polvos con 100 % de fase perovskita, para el sistema de interés en todas las estequiometrias estudiadas, a una temperatura tan baja como 600 ºC, lo que fue confirmado por difracción de rayos X. Por medio de espectroscopia infrarroja, FT-IR, se pudo determinar cómo afecta la variación de la estequiometria, Na-K, los enlaces presentes en la estructura. Mediante microscopia electrónica de barrido se observaron partículas nanométricas irregulares.

Abstract

Background: Anastomotic leaks are associated with significant risk of morbidity, mortality and treatment costs after oesophagectomy. The aim of this study was to evaluate international variation in unit-level clinical practice and resource availability for the prevention and management of anastomotic leak following oesophagectomy.Method: The Oesophago-Gastric Anastomosis Audit (OGAA) is an international research collaboration focussed on improving the care and outcomes of patients undergoing oesophagectomy. Any unit performing oesophagectomy worldwide can register to participate in OGAA studies. An online unit survey was developed and disseminated to lead surgeons at each unit registered to participate in OGAA. High-income country (HIC) and low/middle-income country (LMIC) were defined according to the World Bank whilst unit volume were defined as < 20 versus 20-59 versus ≥60 cases/year in the unit.Results: Responses were received from 141 units, a 77% (141/182) response rate. Median annual oesophagectomy caseload was reported to be 26 (inter-quartile range 12-50). Only 48% (68/141) and 22% (31/141) of units had an Enhanced Recovery After Surgery (ERAS) program and ERAS nurse, respectively. HIC units had significantly higher rates of stapled anastomosis compared to LMIC units (66 vs 31%, p = 0.005). Routine post-operative contrast-swallow anastomotic assessment was performed in 52% (73/141) units. Stent placement and interventional radiology drainage for anastomotic leak management were more commonly available in HICs than LMICs (99 vs 59%, p < 0.001 and 99 vs 83%, p < 0.001).Conclusions: This international survey highlighted variation in surgical technique and management of anastomotic leak based on case volume and country income level. Further research is needed to understand the impact of this variation on patient outcomes.
