Abstract

Sherpa is a general-purpose Monte Carlo event generator for the simulation of particle collisions in high-energy collider experiments. We summarise new developments, essential features, and ongoing improvements within the Sherpa 3 release series. Physics improvements include higher-order electroweak corrections, simulations of photoproduction and hard diffraction at NLO QCD, heavy-flavour matching in NLO multijet merging, spin-polarised cross section calculations, and a new model of colour reconnections. In addition, the modelling of hadronisation, the underlying event and QED effects in both production and decay has been improved, and the overall event generation efficiency has been enhanced., Comment: We proudly present the new major release of the Sherpa MC generator

2. Hard Diffraction in Sherpa

Abstract

We present the first complete simulation framework for the simulation of jet production in diffractive events at next-to leading order in QCD, matched to the parton shower. We validate the implementation in the SHERPA event generator with data from the H1 and ZEUS experiments for diffractive DIS and diffractive photoproduction. For the latter, we review different models aiming to explain the observed factorisation breaking and we argue that at NLO the direct component must also be suppressed. We provide predictions for diffractive jet production both in DIS and in photoproduction events for the upcoming EIC., Comment: 18 pages, 9 figures

3. Photoproduction in general-purpose event generators

Abstract

We present a comparison of three different general-purpose Monte Carlo event generators, Herwig, Pythia, and Sherpa, with respect to the simulation of photoproduction. We outline the default inputs, implementation differences and compare the results at different stages of the event generation. We find that, despite a similar starting point, the final cross sections do have some differences related to different non-perturbative inputs. We compare the simulations with experimental data for jet production in LEP and HERA and find that all generators provide a decent desription of the data within the considered uncertainties. We also present predictions for the upcoming EIC for jet observables and event shapes and conclude that accurate simulations will require further phenomenological advances., Comment: Submission to SciPost

6. Resolved Photons in Sherpa

Abstract

We present the first complete simulation framework, in the Sherpa event generator, for resolved photon interactions at next-to leading order accuracy. It includes photon spectra obtained through the equivalent-photon approximation, parton distribution functions to parametrize the hadronic structure of quasi-real photons, the matching of the parton shower to next-to leading order QCD calculations for resolved photon cross sections, and the modelling of multiple-parton interactions. We validate our framework against a wide range of photo-production data from LEP and HERA experiments, observing good overall agreement. We identify important future steps relevant for high-quality simulations at the planned Electron-Ion Collider.

7. Full event simulation of Photoproduction at NLO QCD in Sherpa

Abstract

Photoproduction is an important mode for the production of jets and electro-weak particles at lepton--lepton and lepton--hadron colliders and allows for interesting studies of exclusive production at hadron--hadron colliders. In this talk, I will review recent efforts of extending the Sherpa event generator to include the calculation of photoproduction cross sections for electron and proton beams, including the simulation of underlying events. The framework is validated using data of jet production at the HERA and LEP experiments and lepton production at the LHC. Abstract

We provide an overview of the status of Monte-Carlo event generators for high-energy particle physics. Guided by the experimental needs and requirements, we highlight areas of active development, and opportunities for future improvements. Particular emphasis is given to physics models and algorithms that are employed across a variety of experiments. These common themes in event generator development lead to a more comprehensive understanding of physics at the highest energies and intensities, and allow models to be tested against a wealth of data that have been accumulated over the past decades. A cohesive approach to event generator development will allow these models to be further improved and systematic uncertainties to be reduced, directly contributing to future experimental success. Event generators are part of a much larger ecosystem of computational tools. They typically involve a number of unknown model parameters that must be tuned to experimental data, while maintaining the integrity of the underlying physics models. Making both these data, and the analyses with which they have been obtained accessible to future users is an essential aspect of open science and data preservation. 11. A unified leptoquark model confronted with lepton non-universality in $B$-meson decays

Abstract

The anomalies in the $B$-meson sector, in particular $R_{K^{(*)}}$ and $R_{D^{(*)}}$, are often interpreted as hints for physics beyond the Standard Model. To this end, leptoquarks or a heavy $Z'$ represent the most popular SM extensions which can explain the observations. However, adding these fields by hand is not very satisfactory as it does not address the big questions like a possible embedding into a unified gauge theory. On the other hand, light leptoquarks within a unified framework are challenging due to additional constraints such as lepton flavor violation. The existing accounts typically deal with this issue by providing estimates on the relevant couplings. In this letter we consider a complete model based on the $SU(4)_{\rm C}\otimes SU(2)_{\rm L}\otimes U(1)_{\rm R}$ gauge symmetry, a subgroup of $SO(10)$, featuring both scalar and vector leptoquarks. We demonstrate that this setup has, in principle, all the potential to accommodate $R_{K^{(*)}}$ and $R_{D^{(*)}}$ while respecting bounds from other sectors usually checked in this context. However, it turns out that $K_L \to e^{\pm} \mu^{\mp}$ severely constraints not only the vector but also the scalar leptoquarks and, consequently, also the room for any sizeable deviations of $R_{K^{(*)}}$ from 1. We briefly comment on the options for extending the model in order to conform this constraint. Abstract

We provide an overview of the status of Monte-Carlo event generators for high-energy particle physics. Guided by the experimental needs and requirements, we highlight areas of active development, and opportunities for future improvements. Particular emphasis is given to physics models and algorithms that are employed across a variety of experiments. These common themes in event generator development lead to a more comprehensive understanding of physics at the highest energies and intensities, and allow models to be tested against a wealth of data that have been accumulated over the past decades. A cohesive approach to event generator development will allow these models to be further improved and systematic uncertainties to be reduced, directly contributing to future experimental success. Event generators are part of a much larger ecosystem of computational tools. They typically involve a number of unknown model parameters that must be tuned to experimental data, while maintaining the integrity of the underlying physics models. Making both these data, and the analyses with which they have been obtained accessible to future users is an essential aspect of open science and data preservation. It ensures the consistency of physics models across a variety of experiments.

Abstract

Globally, mental health conditions pose a substantial burden of disease. Despite the availability of evidence-based pharmacological and psychological treatments, the symptoms of a substantial subgroup of patients do not respond to these interventions, and only a minority of patients have access to them. This study aimed to assess the efficacy of ImPuls, a 6-month transdiagnostic group exercise intervention, plus treatment-as-usual, compared with treatment-as-usual alone in outpatients with various mental disorders.

15. Is higher physical activity behaviour associated with less subsequent use of any psychotropic medication: Results of a random-effects meta-analysis of prospective cohort studies.

Abstract

Physical activity is associated with lower risk of incident depression and anxiety disorders. However, there is no meta-analytic evidence on the associations between physical activity levels and the incident use of psychotropic medications. PubMed, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, PsycINFO, and Cochrane were searched up until March 2024 to identify prospective cohort studies in the general population without age restrictions, with any sample size, and with at least one year of follow-up. Risk of bias was assessed using the Newcastle-Ottawa Scale and a random-effects meta-analysis of adjusted relative risks was performed. Three studies comprising 40,111 participants and 322,521 person-years were included (mean age 53.8, range 18–90 years; 54% women). Relative to people reporting no physical activity, those accumulating any volume of physical activity had 15.0% (95% CI: 0.76, 0.96) lower risk of any subsequent medication use. Heterogeneity was moderate and not significant (I 2 = 33.6%). The current meta-analysis demonstrated that people with higher physical activity levels are at lower risk of subsequent use of psychotropic medication. However, the evidence is based on a small number of studies (n = 3), highlighting the need for high-quality longitudinal studies. • Physical activity lowers the risk of future psychotropic medication use by 15%. • Results support preventive effects of physical activity on anxiety and depression. The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA's) spontaneous adverse drug reaction (ADR) reporting system functions to collect worldwide voluntarily/spontaneously reported medical events that occur in association with the use of a pharmaceutical product from physicians, pharmacists, patients, etc. While publicity surrounding a drug has frequently been considered to directly affect the number of medical events or adverse reactions reported, the effect has usually not been documented. The Upjohn Company prospectively studied the impact of the media on the reporting of Halcion® Tablets (triazolam) medical events during the first quarter of 1989. A survey of the number of medical event reports received before and after the product was discussed on a national television program revealed that reports increased dramatically (nearly doubled) as a direct and indirect effect of the program
