The magnetic characteristics of polycrystalline exchange-biased antiferromagnet/ferromagnet-bilayers are determined by a complex interplay of parameters, describing structural and magnetic properties of the material system, including in particular the grain volume distribution of the antiferromagnet. An ideal characterization of such systems would be a non-destructive determination of the relevant parameters for each individual grain. This is in most cases not feasible, since typical characterization methods do average over larger areas. Here, we show that it is however possible to determine averaged microscopic parameters from averaged macroscopic magnetic quantities measured by vectorial Kerr magnetometry in comparison to an elaborate model. In particular, we estimate the magnetically effective antiferromagnetic grain size distribution, being essential for the interface exchange coupling to the ferromagnetic layer. We found that the distribution of magnetically active grain sizes differs from the structural one, indicating that the antiferromagnetic order, relevant for the exchange bias, extends only over a part of the grains' structural volumes., Comment: 15 pages, 8 figures, 3 tables

Recent results showed that the ferrimagnetic compensation point and other characteristic features of Tb/Co ferrimagnetic multilayers can be tailored by He+ ion bombardment. With appropriate choices of the He+ ion dose, we prepared two types of lattices composed of squares with either Tb or Co domination. The magnetization reversal of the first lattice is similar to that seen in ferromagnetic heterostructures consisting of areas with different switching fields. However, in the second lattice, the creation of domains without accompanying domain walls is possible. These domain patterns are particularly stable because they simultaneously lower the demagnetizing energy and the energy associated with the presence of domain walls (exchange and anisotropy). For both lattices, studies of magnetization reversal show that this process takes place by the propagation of the domain walls. If they are not present at the onset, the reversal starts from the nucleation of reversed domains and it is followed by domain wall propagation. The magnetization reversal process does not depend significantly on the relative sign of the effective magnetization in areas separated by domain walls.

Single and double paramagnetic colloidal particles are placed above a magnetic square pattern and are driven with an external magnetic field processing around a high symmetry direction of the pattern. The external magnetic field and that of the pattern confine the colloids into lanes parallel to a lattice vector of the pattern. The precession of the external field causes traveling minima of the magnetic potential along the direction of the lanes. At sufficiently high frequencies of modulation, only the doublets respond to the external field and move in direction of the traveling minima along the lanes, while the single colloids cannot follow and remain static. We show how the doublets can induce a coordinated motion of the single colloids building colloidal trains made of a chain of several single colloids transported by doublets.

Controlled transport of surface-functionalized magnetic beads in a liquid medium is a central requirement for the handling of captured biomolecular targets in microfluidic lab-on-chip biosensors. Here, the influence of the physiological liquid medium on the transport characteristics of functionalized magnetic particles and on the functionality of the coupled protein is studied. These aspects are theoretically modeled and experimentally investigated for prototype superparamagnetic beads, surface-functionalized with green fluorescent protein immersed in buffer solution with different concentrations of a surfactant. The model reports on the tunability of the steady-state particle substrate separation distance to prevent their surface sticking via the choice of surfactant concentration. Experimental and theoretical average velocities are discussed for a ratchet-like particle motion induced by a dynamic external field superposed on a static locally varying magnetic field landscape. The developed model and experiment may serve as a basis for quantitative forecasts on the functionality of magnetic particle transport-based lab-on-chip devices.

Magnetic Janus particles MJPs , fabricated by covering a non amp; 8209;magnetic spherical particle with a hemispherical magnetic in amp; 8209;plane exchange amp; 8209;bias layer system cap, display an onion magnetization state for comparably large diameters of a few microns. In this work, the motion characteristics of these MJPs will be investigated when they are steered by a magnetic field landscape over prototypical parallel amp; 8209;stripe domains, dynamically varied by superposed external magnetic field pulse sequences, in an aqueous medium. We demonstrate, that due to the engineered magnetization state in the hemispherical cap, a comparably fast, directed particle transport and particle rotation can be induced. Additionally, by modifying the frequency of the applied pulse sequence and the strengths of the individual field components, we observe a possible separation between a combined or an individual occurrence of these two types of motion. Our findings bear importance for lab amp; 8209;on amp; 8209;a amp; 8209;chip systems, where particle immobilization on a surface via analyte bridges shall be used for low concentration analyte detection and a particle rotation over a defined position of a substrate may dramatically increase the immobilization and therefore analyte detection probability

For polycrystalline exchange-biased thin films the macroscopic magnetic properties evolve from a complex interplay of different individual magnetic anisotropies which are directly connected to the grain volume distribution and to the crystal and interface structure of the layer system. A quantitative comparison of models describing a macroscopically observed exchange bias by the contributing anisotropies has in most cases been hampered by neglecting their time dependence with respect to data acquisition and storage times. Using a recently developed model we are able to connect time-dependent parts of the prevailing anisotropies with parameters describing the polycrystalline structure of the layer system. The model will be compared to experiments on a prototypical IrMn/CoFe bilayer, where structural and magnetic parameters have been systematically altered by varying the deposition rate of the antiferromagnetic layer and the field-cooling temperature. The combination of angular-resolved measurements obtained by vectorial magneto-optic Kerr magnetometry and a systematic analysis of the polycrystalline structure enables the disentanglement of the different anisotropy contributions to the macroscopic exchange bias and coercive fields and serves as a verification of the utilized model.

We additionally show that these patterns display a particularly stable magnetic configuration due to a deep minimum in the energy of the system caused by flux closure and a corresponding reduction of the magnetostatic energy without an increase in energy by exchange and anisotropy terms across the walls. This occurs because light-ion bombardment affects an element's relative contribution to the properties of the ferrimagnet differently. Therefore, it is possible to control the relative contribution from each magnetic subsystem. The selection of material and the use of light-ion bombardment allow us to engineer domain patterns in continuous magnetic films, which open a way to fabricate them in a much smaller scale than currently possible. Our Letter emphasizes that the right criterion to determine the presence or absence of a domain wall is whether there is a rotation of the spin for each sublattice and that changes of the direction of effective magnetization alone do not constitute an appropriate criterion.

Magnetophoresis of micrometer sized superparamagnetic beads on sputtered Ir/Co(1.2 nm)/Ir multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy has been investigated. We show that domain walls motion in these layer systems is controlling the motion of the beads in an aqueous environment, where the domain wall motion is induced by varying perpendicular external magnetic fields of several kA/m. The magnetic fields of the Neel type walls, and forces calculated based on micromagnetic simulations of their structure, are consistent with viscous forces observed in the experiment. We show that the cylindrical domains can be used to efficiently gather originally scattered beads in a small area.

Hemispherical caps of in-plane exchange biased IrMn/CoFe layer systems have been fabricated on top of regularly arranged spherical silica particles by magnetron sputtering, creating magnetic Janus particles. In this thin film layer system cap, the magnetic shape anisotropy of the topographically non-flat hemispheres competes with the unidirectional anisotropy induced by the exchange bias. The magnetic properties of this non-trivial system have been investigated by longitudinal magneto-optical Kerr effect magnetometry, where a characterization method has been developed considering both the curved layer system and the signal contributions of flat parts of the sputtered thin film system. Both remagnetization curves, from Kerr magnetometry and the magnetic force microscopy images, reveal an onion state in the magnetic caps of the ensemble. Additional micromagnetic simulations show a stabilization of the onion state due to the introduced unidirectional anisotropy also in individual hollow hemispheres as compared to the vortex state exhibited by purely ferromagnetic caps.
