Item does not contain fulltext, Background: The impact of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) on parenting and the parent-child relationship has been well-documented in the scientific literature. However, some conceptual and methodological challenges within this research field remain. Procedure: We reflect on a number of challenges that we identified while examining the literature in preparation of an individual participant data meta-analysis on the relationships between PTSD and parenting. Findings: We address 1) the presence of 'trauma-islands'; 2) the need for transdiagnostic theoretical frameworks for mechanisms between PTSD and parenting; 3) the lack of developmental perspectives; 4) the overuse of self-reported retrospective measures; 5) the need to study more diverse samples and cultural contexts; and 6) the lack of research on resilience and post-traumatic growth in parenting. Based on these reflections, we offer suggestions on strategies for responding to these challenges through: 1) welcoming open science; 2) working towards shared theoretical frameworks; 3) doing more longitudinal research 4) expanding the methodological palette; 5) centering lived experience; and 6) taking systemic inequality into account. Conclusion: With this commentary, we aim to open a discussion on next steps towards a more comprehensive understanding of the association between PTSD and parenting, and inspire collaborative research.

Er zijn veel situaties waarin de oordelen van professionals van elkaar verschillen. Als dat ongewenst is, spreken we van ruis (in het Engels: noise): variabiliteit waar die ongewenst is. Met een noise audit wordt de omvang van ruis vastgesteld. Bij WMCN-Kust worden met enige regelmaat waterstandsverwachtingen gemaakt voor locaties langs de Nederlandse kust. In het maken van die verwachtingen speelt het oordeel van de getijhydrologen een belangrijke rol. Er is dan ook het vermoeden dat deze waterstandsverwachtingen onderhevig zijn aan ruis. Om die reden is besloten, een noise audit uit te voeren. Voorliggend document beschrijft het doel, de opzet en de resultaten van de noise audit die is uitgevoerd bij en voor de crisisadviesgroep WMCN-Kust.

Increasing evidence shows that personality pathology starts to develop from (late) childhood onwards. The current study extends previous research by examining maladaptive personality change using both a variable-centered approach (i.e., mean-level changes) and a person-centered approach (i.e., latent profile transitions). Data were used from a 3-wave longitudinal study on Dutch youth (at T1: N = 492, mean age = 10.1). Maladaptive personality traits (i.e., Emotional Instability, Disagreeableness, Introversion, and Compulsivity) were assessed yearly using the Dimensional Personality Symptom Item Pool (DIPSI). A Factor of Curves model indicated presence of a higher-order developmental factor, reflecting low initial levels and small decreases over time, which explained change in all DIPSI traits. Latent profile analyses revealed three quantitatively different maladaptive personality trait profiles. Latent Transition Analysis demonstrated substantial stability in profiles over time. Small groups showed a transition toward another (often more adaptive) profile. Although a person-centered approach may have some merit when aiming to detect high-risk subgroups, the current results suggest that a variable-centered approach—and a Factor of Curves model capturing shared underlying developmental processes in particular—is favorable over a person-centered approach.

In dit rapport wordt besproken hoe Mentoring Urban Talent bij kan dragen aan het schoolsucces van leerlingen in de derde klas van het vwo en gymnasium in Rotterdam en Amsterdam. In Mentoring Urban Talent werden studentmentoren aan leerlingen gekoppeld, waarmee beoogden bij te dragen aan de sociaal-emotionele, cognitieve en identiteitsontwikkeling van leerlingen. Met kwantitatieve en kwalitatieve methoden onderzochten we de effecten van mentoring op gevoel van verbondenheid met school, motivatie, netwerk oriëntatie (houding t.o.v. (academisch) hulp vragen) en geloof in eigen kunnen. Trends in de data lijken te wijzen op een bufferend effect van mentoring. Ook uit de interviews blijkt dat mentees ervaren dat mentoring bijdraagt aan hun schoolsucces, voornamelijk door het vergroten van hun motivatie. Suggesties voor vervolgonderzoek betreffen de uitvoer van het programma en het in meer detail onderzoeken van de bijdrage van overeenkomsten tussen mentor en mentee voor de verschillende uitkomsten.

In het huidige rapport wordt het probleem van het relatief grote percentage leerlingen met een lage sociaaleconomische status en/of migratie achtergrond dat in de derde of vierde klas afstroomt naar een lager onderwijstype onderzocht. Het rapport is onderdeel van het Mentoring Urban Talent onderzoeksproject. Behalve een onderzoek naar afstroomcijfers in Rotterdam en Amsterdam, en de betekenis van deze afstroom voor de leerlingen zelf, onderzoekt Mentoring Urban Talent de effecten van een mentoring traject. In dit mentoring traject zijn studenten van de Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam en de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam gekoppeld aan leerlingen van vijf verschillende scholen in de beide steden. Het proces en de effecten van het mentoring project zijn onderzocht in een studie met een quasi-experimentele opzet waarin kwalitatieve en kwantitatieve methoden zijn gecombineerd. De uitkomsten van deze studie zijn opgenomen in rapport 2 over de mentees, en rapport 3 over de mentoren. In het huidige rapport over afstroom ligt de focus in het eerste deel op de cijfers en in het tweede deel komt de betekenis van de afstroom voor leerlingen aan bod. Mentoring Urban Talent is een mentorprogramma gericht op Amsterdamse en Rotterdamse scholieren om afstroom van het vwo of gymnasium te voorkomen, en doorstroom te bevorderen door middel van ondersteuning en begeleiding door een mentor. Mentoren waren studenten van de Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam en Erasmus Universiteit Rotterdam die zich vrijwillig hadden opgegeven en voor een periode van 20 weken wekelijks met de leerling afspraken. Het programma was gestructureerd, waarbij leerlingen stapsgewijs toegerust werden in studievaardigheden en emotionele ondersteuning en loopbaanbegeleiding ontvingen van hun mentor. Studentmentoren konden daarbij vanuit hun eigen ervaring leerlingen kennis laten maken met de universiteit en obstakels in leren en ontwikkeling bespreken. Onderzoek naar dit programma richt zich in de eerste plaats op de effecten voor de leerlingen met een mentor (zgn. mentees), maar ook voor de studentmentoren zijn er mogelijk positieve effecten van de deelname aan het programma. Research on samples of people that are traditionally seen as hard-to-reach are rare within personality psychology. In Karakter, we assessed a sample of Syrian origin young adults who recently resettled in the Netherlands (initial N = 168) four times over a 13-month period to examine experiences of adversity, emotions, and positive personality change. Here, we provide a detailed narrative of the research process, beginning with a description of how we incorporated open science practices in Karakter. We then turn to a discussion of the changes, challenges, and opportunities we encountered in the research. In doing so, we discuss conceptual and methodological considerations when examining personality change. We close with suggestions for researchers who are interested in conducting similar studies with populations that are underrecruited in the future

Central nervous system (CNS) tumor with BCOR internal tandem duplication (BCOR-ITD) have recently been introduced in the 5th edition of the WHO classification of CNS tumors, however, their molecular makeup and clinical characteristics remain widely enigmatic. This is further complicated by the recent discovery of tumors characterized by gene fusions involving BCOR or its homologue BCORL1. We identified a cohort of 206 BCOR altered CNS tumors via DNA methylation profiling and conducted in-depth molecular and clinical characterization in an international effort. By performing t-SNE clustering analysis we found that BCOR-fusion tumors form a distinct cluster (n=61), adjacent to BCOR-ITD cases (n=145). The identified fusion partners of BCOR(L1) included EP300 (n=20), CREBBP (n=5), and NUTM2HP (n=1). Notably, three cases within the BCOR-ITD cluster harbored a c-terminal intragenic deletion within BCOR. With respect to clinical characteristics gender ratio was balanced in BCOR-fusion cases (m/f, 1.1), whereas predominance of male patients was observed in the BCOR-ITD group (m/f, 1.5). Moreover, age at diagnosis of BCOR-fusion patients was higher as compared to BCOR-ITD cases (15 vs 4.5 years). Interestingly, BCOR-fusion tumors were exclusively found in the supratentorial region being originally diagnosed as ependymomas or gliomas whereas BCOR-ITD emerged across the entire CNS with diverse original diagnoses. 8% of BCOR-ITD and none of BCOR-fusion cases were disseminated at diagnosis. In line with this observation, 40% of first relapses within the BCOR-ITD group were metastatic which was less frequent in BCOR-fusion tumors. Survival estimates demonstrated no differences, generally showing short median PFS (BCOR-fusion, 2 years, n=15; BCOR-ITD, 1.8 years, n=55) and intermediate OS rates (BCOR-fusion, 6.8 years, n=18; BCOR-ITD 6.3 years, n=60). Objective: Post-traumatic growth typically refers to enduring positive psychological change experienced as a result of adversity, trauma, or highly challenging life circumstances. Critics have challenged insights from much of the prior research on this topic, pinpointing its significant methodological limitations. In response to these critiques, we propose that post-traumatic growth can be more accurately captured in terms of personality change—an approach that affords a more rigorous examination of the phenomenon. Method: We outline a set of conceptual and methodological questions and considerations for future work on the topic of post-traumatic growth. Results: We provide a series of recommendations for researchers from across the disciplines of clinical/counseling, developmental, health, personality, and social psychology and beyond, who are interested in improving the quality of research examining resilience and growth in the context of adversity. Conclusion: We are hopeful that these recommendations will pave the way for a more accurate understanding of the ubiquity, durability, and causal processes underlying post-traumatic growth.
