The Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Milky Way is fed by gas inflows from the Galactic disk along almost radial trajectories aligned with the major axis of the Galactic bar. However, despite being fundamental to all processes in the nucleus of the galaxy, these inflows have been studied significantly less than the CMZ itself. We present observations of various molecular lines between 215 and 230 GHz for 20 clouds with $|\ell| < 10^\circ$, which are candidates for clouds in the Galactic bar due to their warm temperatures and broad lines relative to typical Galactic disk clouds, using the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) Atacama Compact Array (ACA). We measure gas temperatures, shocks, star formation rates, turbulent Mach numbers, and masses for these clouds. Although some clouds may be in the Galactic disk despite their atypical properties, nine clouds are likely associated with regions in the Galactic bar, and in these clouds, turbulent pressure is suppressing star formation. In clouds with no detected star formation, turbulence is the dominant heating mechanism, whereas photo-electric processes heat the star-forming clouds. We find that the ammonia (NH3) and formaldehyde (H2CO) temperatures probe different gas components, and in general each transition appears to trace different molecular gas phases within the clouds. We also measure the CO-to-H2 X-factor in the bar to be an order of magnitude lower than the typical Galactic value. We use a neural network model and ALMA observations of HCN and HNC to constrain the physical conditions, most notably the cosmic-ray ionization rate (CRIR, zeta), in the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. Using output from the chemical code UCLCHEM, we train a neural network model to emulate UCLCHEM and derive HCN and HNC molecular abundances from a given set of physical conditions. We combine the neural network with radiative transfer modeling to generate modeled integrated intensities, which we compare to measurements of HCN and HNC from the ALMA Large Program ALCHEMI. Using a Bayesian nested sampling framework, we constrain the CRIR, molecular gas volume and column densities, kinetic temperature, and beam-filling factor across NGC 253's CMZ. The neural network model successfully recovers UCLCHEM molecular abundances with about 3 percent error and, when used with our Bayesian inference algorithm, increases the parameter inference speed tenfold. We create images of these physical parameters across NGC 253's CMZ at 50 pc resolution and find that the CRIR, in addition to the other gas parameters, is spatially variable with zeta a few times 10^{14} s^{-1} at greater than 100 pc from the nucleus, increasing to zeta greater than 10^{-13} s^{-1} at its center. These inferred CRIRs are consistent within 1 dex with theoretical predictions based on non-thermal emission. Additionally, the high CRIRs estimated in NGC 253's CMZ can be explained by the large number of cosmic-ray-producing sources as well as a potential suppression of cosmic-ray diffusion near their injection sites.

We present a near infrared (NIR) candidate star cluster catalog for the central kiloparsec of M82 based on new JWST NIRCam images. We identify star cluster candidates using the F250M filter, finding 1357 star cluster candidates with stellar masses $>10^4$ M$_\odot$. Compared to previous optical catalogs, nearly all (87%) of the candidates we identify are new. The star cluster candidates have a median intrinsic cluster radius of $\approx$1 pc and have stellar masses up to $10^6$ M$_\odot$. By comparing the color-color diagram to dust-free yggdrasil stellar population models, we estimate that the star cluster candidates have A$_{\rm V}\sim3-24$ mag, corresponding to A$_{\rm 2.5\mu m}\sim0.3-2.1$ mag. There is still appreciable dust extinction towards these clusters into the NIR. We measure the stellar masses of the star cluster candidates, assuming ages of 0 and 8 Myr. The slope of the resulting cluster mass function is $\beta=1.9\pm0.2$, in excellent agreement with studies of star clusters in other galaxies., Comment: Resubmitted to ApJL

In this paper we study the filamentary substructure of 3.3 $\mu$m PAH emission from JWST/NIRCam observations in the base of the M82 star-burst driven wind. We identify plume-like substructure within the PAH emission with widths of $\sim$50 pc. Several of the plumes extend to the edge of the field-of-view, and thus are at least 200-300 pc in length. In this region of the outflow, the vast majority ($\sim$70\%) of PAH emission is associated with the plumes. We show that those structures contain smaller scale "clouds" with widths that are $\sim$5-15 pc, and they are morphologically similar to the results of "cloud-crushing" simulations. We estimate the cloud-crushing time-scales of $\sim$0.5-3 Myr, depending on assumptions. We show this time scale is consistent with a picture in which these observed PAH clouds survived break-out from the disk rather than being destroyed by the hot wind. The PAH emission in both the midplane and the outflow is shown to tightly correlate with that of Pa$\alpha$ emission (from HST/NICMOS data), at the scale of both plumes and clouds, though the ratio of PAH-to-Pa$\alpha$ increases at further distances from the midplane. Finally, we show that the outflow PAH emission is suppressed in regions of the M82 wind that are bright in X-ray emission. Overall, our results are broadly consistent with a picture in which cold gas in galactic outflows is launched via hierarchically structured plumes, and those small scale clouds are more likely to survive the wind environment when collected into the larger plume structure., Comment: Submitted to MNRAS

The physical properties of galactic molecular outflows are important as they could constrain outflow formation mechanisms. We study the properties of the southwest (SW) outflow streamer including gas kinematics, optical depth, dense gas fraction, and shock strength in the central molecular zone of the starburst galaxy NGC 253. We image the molecular emission at a spatial resolution of $\sim$27 pc based on data from the ALCHEMI program. We trace the kinematics of molecular gas with CO(1-0) line. We constrain the optical depth of CO emission with CO/$^{13}$CO(1-0) ratio, the dense gas fraction with HCN/CO(1-0) ratio, as well as the shock strength with SiO(2-1)/$^{13}$CO(1-0) ratio. The CO/$^{13}$CO(1-0) integrated intensity ratio is $\sim$21 in the SW streamer region, which approximates the C/$^{13}$C isotopic abundance ratio. The higher integrated intensity ratio compared to the disk can be attributed to the optically thinner environment for CO(1-0) emission inside the SW streamer. The HCN/CO(1-0) and SiO(2-1)/$^{13}$CO(1-0) integrated intensity ratios both approach $\sim$0.2 in three giant molecular clouds (GMCs) at the base of the outflow streamers, which implies the higher dense gas fraction and enhanced strength of fast shocks in those GMCs than in the disk. The contours of those two integrated intensity ratios are extended towards the directions of outflow streamers, which connects the enhanced dense gas fraction and shock strength with molecular outflow. Moreover, the molecular gas with enhanced dense gas fraction and shock strength located at the base of the SW streamer shares the same velocity with the outflow. These phenomena suggest that the star formation inside the GMCs can trigger the shocks and further drive the molecular outflow., Comment: Accepted for publication in A&A, 14 pages, 11 figures

We present new observations of the central 1 kpc of the M 82 starburst obtained with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) near-infrared camera (NIRCam) instrument at a resolution ~0.05"-0.1" (~1-2 pc). The data comprises images in three mostly continuum filters (F140M, F250M, and F360M), and filters that contain [FeII] (F164N), H2 v=1-0 (F212N), and the 3.3 um PAH feature (F335M). We find prominent plumes of PAH emission extending outward from the central starburst region, together with a network of complex filamentary substructure and edge-brightened bubble-like features. The structure of the PAH emission closely resembles that of the ionized gas, as revealed in Paschen alpha and free-free radio emission. We discuss the origin of the structure, and suggest the PAHs are embedded in a combination of neutral, molecular, and photoionized gas., Comment: Submitted to The Astrophysical Journal

Molecular lines are powerful diagnostics of the physical and chemical properties of the interstellar medium (ISM). These ISM properties, which affect future star formation, are expected to differ in starburst galaxies from those of more quiescent galaxies. We investigate the ISM properties in the central molecular zone of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 using the ultra-wide millimeter spectral scan survey from the ALMA Large Program ALCHEMI. We present an atlas of velocity-integrated images at a 1".6 resolution of 148 unblended transitions from 44 species, including the first extragalactic detection of HCNH$^+$ and the first interferometric images of C$_3$H$^+$, NO, HCS$^+$. We conduct a principal component analysis (PCA) on these images to extract correlated chemical species and to identify key groups of diagnostic transitions. To the best of our knowledge, our dataset is currently the largest astronomical set of molecular lines to which PCA has been applied. The PCA can categorize transitions coming from different physical components in NGC 253 such as i) young starburst tracers characterized by high-excitation transitions of HC$_3$N and complex organic molecules (COMs) versus tracers of on-going star formation (radio recombination lines) and high-excitation transitions of CCH and CN tracing PDRs, ii) tracers of cloud-collision-induced shocks (low-excitation transitions of CH$_3$OH, HNCO, HOCO$^+$, and OCS) versus shocks from star-formation-induced outflows (high-excitation transitions of SiO), as well as iii) outflows showing emission from HOC$^+$, CCH, H$_3$O$^+$, CO isotopologues, HCN, HCO$^+$, CS, and CN. We present a spatially-resolved excitation analysis for the central molecular zone (CMZ) of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 using the data from the ALMA Large program ALCHEMI, whereby we explore parameters distinguishing NGC 253 from the quiescent Milky Way's Galactic Center (GC). Non-LTE analyses employing a hierarchical Bayesian framework are applied to Band 3-7 transitions from nine molecular species to delineate the position-position-velocity distributions of column density ($N_\mathrm{H_2}$), volume density ($n_\mathrm{H_2}$), and temperature ($T_\mathrm{kin}$) at 27 pc resolution. Two distinct components are detected: a low-density component with $(n_\mathrm{H_2},\ T_\mathrm{kin})\sim(10^{3.3}\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}, 85 K)$ and a high-density component with $(n_\mathrm{H_2},\ T_\mathrm{kin})\sim (10^{4.4}\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}, 110\ \mathrm{K})$, separated at $n_\mathrm{H_2}\sim10^{3.8}\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$. NGC 253 has $\sim10$ times the high-density gas mass and $\sim3$ times the dense-gas mass fraction of the GC. These properties are consistent with their HCN/CO ratio but cannot alone explain the factor of $\sim30$ difference in their star formation efficiencies (SFEs), contradicting the dense-gas mass to star formation rate scaling law. The $n_\mathrm{H_2}$ histogram toward NGC 253 exhibits a shallow declining slope up to $n_\mathrm{H_2}\sim10^6\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$, while that of the GC steeply drops in $n_\mathrm{H_2}\gtrsim10^{4.5}\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$ and vanishes at $10^5\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$. Their dense-gas mass fraction ratio becomes consistent with their SFEs when the threshold $n_\mathrm{H_2}$ for the dense gas is taken at $\sim 10^{4.2\mbox{-}4.6}\ \mathrm{cm}^{-3}$. The rich abundance of gas above this density range in the NGC 253 CMZ, or its scarcity in the GC, is likely to be the critical difference characterizing the contrasting star formation in the centers of the two galaxies., Comment: 49 pages, 27 figures, 7 tables, accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

The Milky Way is a barred spiral galaxy with "bar lanes" that bring gas towards the Galactic Center. Gas flowing along these bar lanes often overshoots, and instead of accreting onto the Central Molecular Zone, it collides with the bar lane on the opposite side of the Galaxy. We observed G5, a cloud which we believe is the site of one such collision, near the Galactic Center at (l,b) = (+5.4, -0.4) with the ALMA/ACA. We took measurements of the spectral lines $^{12}$CO J=2-1, $^{13}$CO J=2-1, C$^{18}$O J=2-1, H$_2$CO J=3$_{03}$-2$_{02}$, H$_{2}$CO J=3$_{22}$-2$_{21}$, CH$_{3}$OH J=4$_{22}$-3$_{12}$, OCS J=18-17 and SiO J=5-4. We observed a velocity bridge between two clouds at $\sim$50 km/s and $\sim$150 km/sin our position-velocity diagram, which is direct evidence of a cloud-cloud collision. We measured an average gas temperature of $\sim$60 K in G5 using H$_2$CO integrated intensity line ratios. We observed that the $^{12}$C/$^{13}$C ratio in G5 is consistent with optically thin, or at most marginally optically thick $^{12}$CO. We measured 1.5 x 10$^{19}$ cm$^{-2}$(K km/s)$^{-1}$ for the local X$_{CO}$, 10-20x less than the average Galactic value. G5 is strong direct observational evidence of gas overshooting the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) and colliding with a bar lane on the opposite side of the Galactic center., Comment: Accepted to ApJ. 27 pages, 19 figures

The inner 300-500 pc of the Milky Way has some of the most extreme gas conditions in our Galaxy. Physical properties of the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), including temperature, density, thermal pressure, and turbulent pressure, are key factors for characterizing gas energetics, kinematics, and evolution. The molecular gas in this region is more than an order of magnitude hotter than gas in the Galactic disk, but the mechanism responsible for heating the gas remains uncertain. We characterize the temperature for 16 regions, extending out to a projected radius of $\sim$450 pc. We observe \am\, J,K=(1,1)-(6,6) inversion transitions from SWAG (Survey of Water and Ammonia in the Galactic Center) using the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), and ammonia lines (J,K) = (8,8)-(14,14) using the 100\,m Green Bank Telescope. Using these two samples we create full Boltzmann plots for every source and fit two rotational temperature components to the data. For the cool component we detect rotational temperatures ranging from 20-80\,K, and for the hot component we detect temperature ranging from 210-580\,K. With this sample of 16 regions, we identify some of the most extreme molecular gas temperatures detected in the Galactic center thus far. We do not find a correlation between gas temperature and Galactocentric radius, and we confirm that these high temperatures are not exclusively associated with actively star-forming clouds. We also investigate temperature and line widths and find (1) no correlation between temperature and line width and (2) the lines are non-thermally broadened indicating that non-thermal motions are dominant over thermal., Comment: 39 pages, 42 figures, 7 tables

We analyze HCN and HNC emission in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 to investigate its effectiveness in tracing heating processes associated with star formation. This study uses multiple HCN and HNC rotational transitions observed using ALMA via the ALCHEMI Large Program. To understand the conditions and associated heating mechanisms within NGC 253's dense gas, we employ Bayesian nested sampling techniques applied to chemical and radiative transfer models which are constrained using our HCN and HNC measurements. We find that the volume density $n_{\text{H}_{2}}$ and cosmic ray ionization rate (CRIR) $\zeta$ are enhanced by about an order of magnitude in the galaxy's central regions as compared to those further from the nucleus. In NGC 253's central GMCs, where observed HCN/HNC abundance ratios are lowest, $n \sim 10^{5.5}$ cm$^{-3}$ and $\zeta \sim 10^{-12}$ s$^{-1}$ (greater than $10^4$ times the average Galactic rate). We find a positive correlation in the association of both density and CRIR with the number of star formation-related heating sources (supernova remnants, HII regions, and super hot cores) located in each GMC, as well as a correlation between CRIRs and supernova rates. Additionally, we see an anticorrelation between the HCN/HNC ratio and CRIR, indicating that this ratio will be lower in regions where $\zeta$ is higher. Though previous studies suggested HCN and HNC may reveal strong mechanical heating processes in NGC 253's CMZ, we find cosmic ray heating dominates the heating budget, and mechanical heating does not play a significant role in the HCN and HNC chemistry., Comment: 33 pages, 23 figures, accepted for publication by the Astrophysical Journal

We present ALMA data on the 3mm continuum emission, CO isotopologues (12CO, 13CO, C18O), and high-density molecular tracers (HCN, HCO+, HNC, HNCO, CS, CN, and CH3OH) in NGC4526. These data enable a detailed study of the physical properties of the molecular gas in a longtime resident of the Virgo Cluster; comparisons to more commonly-studied spiral galaxies offer intriguing hints into the processing of molecular gas in the cluster environment. Many molecular line ratios in NGC4526, along with our inferred abundances and CO/H2 conversion factors, are similar to those found in nearby spirals. One striking exception is the very low observed 12CO/13CO(1-0) line ratio, $3.4\pm0.3$, which is unusually low for spirals though not for Virgo Cluster early-type galaxies. We carry out radiative transfer modeling of the CO isotopologues with some archival (2-1) data, and we use Bayesian analysis with Markov chain Monte Carlo techniques to infer the physical properties of the CO-emitting gas. We find surprisingly low [12CO/13CO] abundance ratios of $7.8^{+2.7}_{-1.5}$ and $6.5^{+3.0}_{-1.3}$ at radii of 0.4 kpc and 1 kpc. The emission from the high-density tracers HCN, HCO+, HNC, CS and CN is also relatively bright, and CN is unusually optically thick in the inner parts of NGC4526. These features hint that processing in the cluster environment may have removed much of the galaxy's relatively diffuse, optically thinner molecular gas along with its atomic gas. Angular momentum transfer to the surrounding intracluster medium may also have caused contraction of the disk, magnifying radial gradients such as we find in [13CO/C18O]. More detailed chemical evolution modeling would be interesting in order to explore whether the unusual [12CO/13CO] abundance ratio is entirely an environmental effect or whether it also reflects the relatively old stellar population in this early-type galaxy., Comment: Version 2 is accepted in ApJ

The complex physical, kinematic, and chemical properties of galaxy centres make them interesting environments to examine with molecular line emission. We present new $2-4$" (${\sim}75{-}150$ pc at $7.7$ Mpc) observations at 2 and 3 mm covering the central $50$" (${\sim}1.9$ kpc) of the nearby double-barred spiral galaxy NGC 6946 obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer. We detect spectral lines from ten molecules: CO, HCN, HCO$^+$, HNC, CS, HC$_3$N, N$_2$H$^+$, C$_2$H, CH$_3$OH, and H$_2$CO. We complemented these with published 1mm CO observations and 33 GHz continuum observations to explore the star formation rate surface density ${\Sigma_{\mathrm{SFR}}}$ on 150 pc scales. In this paper, we analyse regions associated with the inner bar of NGC 6946 $-$ the nuclear region (NUC), the northern (NBE), and southern inner bar end (SBE) and we focus on short-spacing corrected bulk (CO) and dense gas tracers (HCN, HCO$^+$, and HNC). We find that HCO$^+$ correlates best with ${\Sigma_{\mathrm{SFR}}}$, but the dense gas fraction ($f_{\mathrm{dense}}$) and star formation efficiency of the dense gas (${\mathrm{SFE_{dense}}}$) fits show different behaviours than expected from large-scale disc observations.The SBE has a higher ${\Sigma_{\mathrm{SFR}}}$, $f_{\mathrm{dense}}$, and shocked gas fraction than the NBE. We examine line ratio diagnostics and find a higher CO(2-1)/CO(1-0) ratio towards NBE than for the NUC. Moreover, comparison with existing extragalactic datasets suggests that using the HCN/HNC ratio to probe kinetic temperatures is not suitable on kiloparsec and sub-kiloparsec scales in extragalactic regions. We present the ALMA detection of molecular outflowing gas in the central regions of NGC4945, one of the nearest starbursts and also one of the nearest hosts of an active galactic nucleus (AGN). We detect four outflow plumes in CO (3-2) at ~0.3" resolution that appear to correspond to molecular gas located near the edges of the known ionized outflow cone and its (unobserved) counterpart behind the disk. The fastest and brightest of these plumes has emission reaching observed line-of-sight projected velocities of over 450 km/s beyond systemic, equivalent to an estimated physical outflow velocity v>600 km/s for the fastest emission. Most of these plumes have corresponding emission in HCN or HCO+ (4-3). We discuss a kinematic model for the outflow emission where the molecular gas has the geometry of the ionized gas cone and shares the rotation velocity of the galaxy when ejected. We use this model to explain the velocities we observe, constrain the physical speed of the ejected material, and account for the fraction of outflowing gas that is not detected due to confusion with the galaxy disk. We estimate a total molecular mass outflow rate dMmol/dt~20 Msun/yr flowing through a surface within 100 pc of the disk midplane, likely driven by a combination of the central starburst and AGN., Comment: 20 pages, 12 figures, accepted by The Astrophysical Journal on September 28, 2021

Molecular abundances are sensitive to UV-photon flux and cosmic-ray ionization rate. In starburst environments, the effects of high-energy photons and particles are expected to be stronger. We examine these astrochemical signatures through multiple transitions of HCO$^+$ and its metastable isomer HOC$^+$ in the center of the starburst galaxy NGC 253 using data from the ALMA large program ALCHEMI. The distribution of the HOC$^+$(1-0) integrated intensity shows its association with "superbubbles", cavities created either by supernovae or expanding HII regions. The observed HCO$^+$/HOC$^+$ abundance ratios are $\sim 10-150$, and the fractional abundance of HOC$^+$ relative to H$_2$ is $\sim 1.5\times 10^{-11} - 6\times 10^{-10}$, which implies that the HOC$^+$ abundance in the center of NGC 253 is significantly higher than in quiescent spiral-arm dark clouds in the Galaxy and the Galactic center clouds. Comparison with chemical models implies either an interstellar radiation field of $G_0\gtrsim 10^3$ if the maximum visual extinction is $\gtrsim 5$, or a cosmic-ray ionization rate of $\zeta \gtrsim 10^{-14}$ s$^{-1}$ (3-4 orders of magnitude higher than that within clouds in the Galactic spiral-arms) to reproduce the observed results. From the difference in formation routes of HOC$^+$, we propose that a low-excitation line of HOC$^+$ traces cosmic-ray dominated regions, while high-excitation lines trace photodissociation regions. Our results suggest that the interstellar medium in the center of NGC 253 is significantly affected by energy input from UV-photons and cosmic rays, sources of energy feedback., Comment: 57 pages, 32 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

We present a supermassive black hole (SMBH) mass measurement in the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC7469 using Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of the atomic-${\rm [CI]}$(1-0) and molecular-$^{12}$CO(1-0) emission lines at the spatial resolution of $\approx0.3$" (or $\approx$ 100 pc). These emissions reveal that NGC7469 hosts a circumnuclear gas disc (CND) with a ring-like structure and a two-arm/bi-symmetric spiral pattern within it, surrounded by a starbursting ring. The CND has a relatively low $\sigma/V\approx0.35$ ($r\sim0.5$") and $\sim0.19$ ($r>0.5"$), suggesting that the gas is dynamically settled and suitable for dynamically deriving the mass of its central source. As is expected from X-ray dominated region (XDR) effects that dramatically increase an atomic carbon abundance by dissociating CO molecules, we suggest that the atomic [CI](1-0) emission is a better probe of SMBH masses than CO emission in AGNs. Our dynamical model using the ${\rm [CI]}$(1-0) kinematics yields a $M_{\rm BH}=1.78^{+2.69}_{-1.10}\times10^7$M$_\odot$ and $M/L_{\rm F547M}=2.25^{+0.40}_{-0.43}$ (M$_\odot$/L$_\odot$). The model using the CO(1-0) kinematics also gives a consistent $M_{\rm BH}$ with a larger uncertainty, up to an order of magnitude, i.e.\ $M_{\rm BH}=1.60^{+11.52}_{-1.45}\times10^7$M$_\odot$. This newly dynamical $M_{\rm BH}$ is $\approx$ 2 times higher than the mass determined from the reverberation mapped (RM) method using emissions arising in the unresolved broad-line region (BLR). Given this new $M_{\rm BH}$, we are able to constrain the specific RM dimensionless scaling factor of $f=7.2^{+4.2}_{-3.4}$ for the AGN BLR in NGC7469. The gas within the unresolved BLR thus has a Keplerian virial velocity component and the inclination of $i\approx11.0^\circ$$_{-2.5}^{+2.2}$, confirming its face-on orientation in a Seyfert 1 AGN by assuming a geometrically thin BLR model., Comment: 22 pages, 16 figures, 7 tables. We present ALMA observations of CO isotopologues and high-density molecular tracers (HCN, HCO+, CN, etc.) in NGC 7465, an unusually gas-rich early-type galaxy that acquired its cold gas recently. In the inner 300 pc, the molecular gas kinematics are misaligned with respect to all other galaxy components; as the gas works its way inward it is torqued into polar orbits about the stellar kinematically-decoupled core (KDC), indicating that the stellar KDC is not related to the current gas accretion event. The galaxy also exhibits unusually high 12CO/13CO line ratios in its nucleus but typical 13CO/C18O ratios. Our calculations show that this result does not necessarily indicate an unusual [12CO/13CO] abundance ratio but rather that 12CO (1-0) is optically thin due to high temperatures and/or large linewidths associated with the inner decoupled, misaligned molecular structure. Line ratios of the higher-density tracers suggest that the densest phase of molecular gas in NGC 7465 has a lower density than is typical for nearby galaxies, possibly as a result of the recent gas accretion. All of the observed molecular properties of NGC 7465 are consistent with it having acquired its molecular (and atomic) gas from a spiral galaxy. Further detailed studies of the CO isotopologues in other early-type galaxies would be valuable for investigating the histories of those that may have acquired their gas from dwarfs. Young massive clusters play an important role in the evolution of their host galaxies, and feedback from the high-mass stars in these clusters can have profound effects on the surrounding interstellar medium. The nuclear starburst in the nearby galaxy NGC253 at a distance of 3.5 Mpc is a key laboratory in which to study star formation in an extreme environment. Previous high resolution (1.9 pc) dust continuum observations from ALMA discovered 14 compact, massive super star clusters (SSCs) still in formation. We present here ALMA data at 350 GHz with 28 milliarcsecond (0.5 pc) resolution. We detect blueshifted absorption and redshifted emission (P-Cygni profiles) towards three of these SSCs in multiple lines, including CS 7$-$6 and H$^{13}$CN 4$-$3, which represents direct evidence for previously unobserved outflows. The mass contained in these outflows is a significant fraction of the cluster gas masses, which suggests we are witnessing a short but important phase. Further evidence of this is the finding of a molecular shell around the only SSC visible at near-IR wavelengths. We model the P-Cygni line profiles to constrain the outflow geometry, finding that the outflows must be nearly spherical. Through a comparison of the outflow properties with predictions from simulations, we find that none of the available mechanisms completely explains the observations, although dust-reprocessed radiation pressure and O star stellar winds are the most likely candidates. NGC 4945 is a nearby (3.8 Mpc) galaxy hosting a nuclear starburst and Seyfert Type 2 AGN. We use the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to image the 93 GHz (3.2 mm) free-free continuum and hydrogen recombination line emission (H40$\alpha$ and H42$\alpha$) at 2.2 pc (0.12'') resolution. Our observations reveal 27 bright, compact sources with FWHM sizes of 1.4 - 4.0 pc, which we identify as candidate super star clusters. Recombination line emission, tracing the ionizing photon rate of the candidate clusters, is detected in 15 sources, 6 of which have a significant synchrotron component to the 93 GHz continuum. Adopting an age of ~5 Myr, the stellar masses implied by the ionizing photon luminosities are $\log_{10}$($M_{\star}$/M$_{\odot}$) $\approx$ 4.7 - 6.1. We fit a slope to the cluster mass distribution and find $\beta = -1.8 \pm 0.4$. The gas masses associated with these clusters, derived from the dust continuum at 350 GHz, are typically an order of magnitude lower than the stellar mass. These candidate clusters appear to have already converted a large fraction of their dense natal material into stars and, given their small free-fall times of ~0.05 Myr, are surviving an early volatile phase. We identify a point-like source in 93 GHz continuum emission which is presumed to be the AGN. We do not detect recombination line emission from the AGN and place an upper limit on the ionizing photons which leak into the starburst region of $Q_0 < 10^{52}$ s$^{-1}$., Comment: accepted for publication in ApJ. 27 pages, 11 figures, 6 tables

We compare molecular gas properties in the starbursting center of NGC253 and the Milky Way Galactic Center (GC) on scales of ~1-100 pc using dendograms and resolution-, area- and noise-matched datasets in CO (1-0) and CO (3-2). We find that the size-line width relations in NGC253 and the GC have similar slope, but NGC253 has larger line widths by factors of ~2-3. The $\sigma^2/R$ dependency on column density shows that, in the GC, on scales of 10-100 pc the kinematics of gas over $N>3\times10^{21}$ cm$^{-2}$ are compatible with gravitationally bound structures. In NGC253 this is only the case for column densities $N>3\times10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$. The increased line widths in NGC253 originate in the lower column density gas. This high-velocity dispersion, not gravitationally self-bound gas is likely in transient structures created by the combination of high average densities and feedback in the starburst. The high densities turns the gas molecular throughout the volume of the starburst, and the injection of energy and momentum by feedback significantly increases the velocity dispersion at a given spatial scale over what is observed in the GC., Comment: 13 pages, 3 figures, 4 tables; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

We used the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) to map $^{12}$CO($J$ = 1-0), $^{12}$CO($J$ = 2-1), $^{12}$CO($J$ = 3-2), $^{13}$CO($J$ = 2-1), and [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$) emission lines around the type 1 active galactic nucleus (AGN) of NGC 7469 ($z = 0.0164$) at $\sim 100$ pc resolutions. The CO lines are bright both in the circumnuclear disk (central $\sim 300$ pc) and the surrounding starburst (SB) ring ($\sim 1$ kpc diameter), with two bright peaks on either side of the AGN. By contrast, the [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$) line is strongly peaked on the AGN. Consequently, the brightness temperature ratio of [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$) to $^{13}$CO(2-1) is $\sim 20$ at the AGN, as compared to $\sim 2$ in the SB ring. Our local thermodynamic equilibrium (LTE) and non-LTE models indicate that the enhanced line ratios (or CI enhancement) are due to an elevated C$^0$/CO abundance ratio ($\sim 3-10$) and temperature ($\sim 100-500$ K) around the AGN as compared to the SB ring (abundance ratio $\sim 1$, temperature $\lesssim 100$ K), which accords with the picture of the X-ray-dominated Region (XDR). Based on dynamical modelings, we also provide CO(1-0)-to- and [CI]($^3P_1$-$^3P_0$)-to-molecular mass conversion factors at the central $\sim 100$ pc of this AGN as $\alpha_{\rm CO} = 4.1$ and $\alpha_{\rm CI} = 4.4~M_\odot$ (K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2$)$^{-1}$, respectively. Our results suggest that the CI enhancement is potentially a good marker of AGNs that could be used in a new submillimeter diagnostic method toward dusty environments., Comment: 25 pages, 12 figures, 8 tables. We present submillimeter spectra of the (proto-)super star cluster (SSC) candidates in the starbursting center of the nearby galaxy NGC 253 identified by Leroy et al. (2018). The 2.5pc resolution of our ALMA cycle 3 observations approach the size of the SSCs and allows the study of physical and chemical properties of the molecular gas in these sources. In the 14 SSC sources and in the frequency ranges 342.0-345.8 GHz and 353.9-357.7 GHz we detect 55 lines belonging to 19 different chemical species. The SSCs differ significantly in chemical complexity, with the richest clusters showing 19 species and the least complex showing 4 species. We detect HCN isotopologues and isomers (H$^{13}$CN, HC$^{15}$N, H$^{15}$NC), abundant HC$_3$N, SO and S$^{18}$O, SO$_2$, and H$_2$CS. The gas ratios CO/HCN, CO/HCO$^+$ are low, ~1-10, implying high dense gas fractions in the SSCs. Line ratio analyses suggests chemistry consistent with photon-dominated regions and mechanical heating. None of the SSCs near the galaxy center show line ratios that imply an X-ray dominated region, suggesting that heating by any (still unknown) AGN does not play a major role. The gas temperatures are high in most sources, with an average rotational temperature of ~130 K in SO$_2$. The widespread existence of vibrationally excited HCN and HC$_3$N transitions implies strong IR radiation fields, potentially trapped by a greenhouse effect due to high continuum opacities., Comment: 20 pages, 4 figures, 6 tables; accepted for publication in the Astrophysical Journal

Centimeter-wave transitions are important counterparts to the rotational mm-wave transitions usually observed to study gas in star-forming regions. However, given their relative weakness, these transitions have historically been neglected. We present Australia Telescope Compact Array 4cm- and 15mm-band spectral line observations of nine nearby star-forming galaxies in the H75 array configuration. Thirteen different molecular lines are detected across the sample from OH, NH$_3$, H$_2$O, H$_2$CO, and c-C$_3$H$_2$, as well as 18 radio recombination lines (RRLs) in NGC 253. Excited OH $^2\Pi_{3/2}$ absorption is detected towards NGC 253 (J=5/2), NGC 4945 (J=9/2), and Circinus (J=9/2); the latter two represent only the third and fourth extragalactic J=9/2 detections. These lines in Circinus suggest rotation temperatures in excess of 2000 K, and thus it is likely that the populations of OH rotational states are not governed by a Boltzmann distribution. Circinus's OH lines are blueshifted from the systemic velocity by ~35 km s$^{-1}$, while NGC 4945's are redshifted by ~100 km s$^{-1}$. NGC 4945's OH absorption likely indicates infall onto the nucleus. The NH$_3$ (1,1) through (6,6) lines in NGC 4945 display a superposition of emission and absorption similar to that seen in other dense gas tracers. Strong (3,3) emission points towards maser activity. The relative NH$_3$ absorption strengths in NGC 4945 show similar anomalies as in previous studies of Arp 220 (weak (1,1) and strong (5,5) absorption). A trend towards higher LTE electron temperatures with increasing RRL frequency is present in NGC 253, likely indicative of stimulated emission within the nuclear region., Comment: 30 pages, 12 figures

We present 0.15'' (~2.5pc) resolution ALMA CO(3-2) observations of the starbursting center in NGC253. Together with archival ALMA CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) data we decompose the emission into a disk and non-disk component. We find ~7-16% of the CO luminosity to be associated with the non-disk component ($1.2-4.2 \times 10^7$ K km s$^{-1}$ pc$^2$). The total molecular gas mass in the center of NGC253 is $\sim 3.6 \times 10^8$ M$_\odot$ with $\sim 0.5 \times 10^8$ M$_\odot$ (~15%) in the non-disk component. These measurements are consistent across independent mass estimates through three CO transitions. The high-resolution CO(3-2) observations allow us to identify the molecular outflow within the non-disk gas. Using a starburst conversion factor, we estimate the deprojected molecular mass outflow rate, kinetic energy and momentum in the starburst of NGC253. The deprojected molecular mass outflow rate is in the range ~14-39 M$_\odot$ yr$^{-1}$ with an uncertainty of 0.4dex. The large spread arises due to different interpretations of the kinematics of the observed gas while the errors are due to unknown geometry. The majority of this outflow rate is contributed by distinct outflows perpendicular to the disk, with a significant contribution by diffuse molecular gas. This results in a mass loading factor $\eta = \dot{M}_\mathrm{out} / \dot{M}_\mathrm{SFR}$ in the range $\eta \sim 8-20$ for gas ejected out to ~300pc. We find the kinetic energy of the outflow to be $\sim 2.5-4.5 \times 10^{54}$ erg and ~0.8dex typical error which is ~0.1% of the total or ~8% of the kinetic energy supplied by the starburst. The outflow momentum is $4.8-8.7 \times 10^8$ M$_\odot$ km s$^{-1}$ (~0.5dex error) or ~2.5-4% of the kinetic momentum released into the ISM by feedback. We test models of starburst driven outflows using observations of the 22.2 GHz H$_2$O and 36.2 GHz class I CH$_3$OH maser lines. We have observed the starburst galaxy NGC 253 using the Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array. We present evidence for entrainment of star-forming dense-molecular gas in the outflow of NGC 253. We also show that H$_2$O masers are associated with forming super star clusters and not with supernova remnants. We detect four new 36 GHz CH$_3$OH masers in the central kpc and show possible evidence for a star-formation origin of two class I CH$_3$OH masers. Such high resolution observations are essential for understanding the origin of these masers.

We use ALMA and IRAM 30-m telescope data to investigate the relationship between the spectroscopically-traced dense gas fraction and the cloud-scale (120 pc) molecular gas surface density in five nearby, star-forming galaxies. We estimate the dense gas mass fraction at 650 pc and 2800 pc scales using the ratio of HCN (1-0) to CO (1-0) emission. We then use high resolution (120 pc) CO (2-1) maps to calculate the mass-weighted average molecular gas surface density within 650 pc or 2770 pc beam where the dense gas fraction is estimated. On average, the dense gas fraction correlates with the mass-weighted average molecular gas surface density. Thus, parts of a galaxy with higher mean cloud-scale gas surface density also appear to have a larger fraction of dense gas. The normalization and slope of the correlation do vary from galaxy to galaxy and with the size of the regions studied. This correlation is consistent with a scenario where the large-scale environment sets the gas volume density distribution, and this distribution manifests in both the cloud-scale surface density and the dense gas mass fraction., Comment: 11 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in The Astrophysical Journal Letters

Outflows from AGB stars enrich the Galactic environment with metals and inject mechanical energy into the ISM. Radio spectroscopy can recover both properties through observations of molecular lines. We present results from SWAG: "Survey of Water and Ammonia in the Galactic Center". The survey covers the entire Central Molecular Zone (CMZ), the inner 3.35deg x 0.9deg (~480 x 130pc) of the Milky Way that contains ~5x10^7 Mo of molecular gas. Although our survey primarily targets the CMZ, we observe across the entire sightline through the Milky Way. AGB stars are revealed by their signature of double peaked 22 GHz water maser lines. They are distinguished by their spectral signatures and their luminosities, which reach up to 10^-7 Lo. Higher luminosities are usually associated with Young Stellar Objects located in CMZ star forming regions. We present Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) observations of 12CO(1-0) and 12CO(2-1) in the central 40" (680 pc) of the nuclear starburst galaxy NGC 253, including its molecular outflow. We measure the ratio of brightness temperature for CO(2-1)/CO(1-0), r_21, in the central starburst and outflow-related features. We discuss how r_21 can be used to constrain the optical depth of the CO emission, which impacts the inferred mass of the outflow and consequently the molecular mass outflow rate. We find r_21 less than or equal to 1 throughout, consistent with a majority of the CO emission being optically-thick in the outflow, as it is in the starburst. This suggests that the molecular outflow mass is 3-6 times larger than the lower limit reported for optically thin CO emission from warm molecular gas. The implied molecular mass outflow rate is 25-50 solar masses per year, assuming that conversion factor for the outflowing gas is similar to our best estimates for the bulk of the starburst. This is a factor of 9-19 times larger than the star formation rate in NGC 253. NGC 253 hosts the nearest nuclear starburst. Previous observations show a region rich in molecular gas, with dense clouds associated with recent star formation. We used ALMA to image the 350 GHz dust continuum and molecular line emission from this region at 2 pc resolution. Our observations reveal ~14 bright, compact (~2-3 pc FWHM) knots of dust emission. Most of these sources are likely to be forming super star clusters (SSCs) based on their inferred dynamical and gas masses, association with 36 GHz radio continuum emission, and coincidence with line emission tracing dense, excited gas. One source coincides with a known SSC, but the rest remain invisible in Hubble near-infrared (IR) imaging. Our observations imply that gas still constitutes a large fraction of the overall mass in these sources. Their high brightness temperature at 350 GHz also implies a large optical depth near the peak of the IR spectral energy distribution. As a result, these sources may have large IR photospheres and the IR radiation force likely exceeds L/c. Still, their moderate observed velocity dispersions suggest that feedback from radiation, winds, and supernovae are not yet disrupting most sources. This mode of star formation appears to produce a large fraction of stars in the burst. We argue for a scenario in which this phase lasts ~1 Myr, after which the clusters shed their natal cocoons but continue to produce ionizing photons. We use new ALMA observations to investigate the connection between dense gas fraction, star formation rate, and local environment across the inner region of four local galaxies showing a wide range of molecular gas depletion times. We map HCN (1-0), HCO$^+$ (1-0), CS (2-1), $^{13}$CO (1-0), and C$^{18}$O (1-0) across the inner few kpc of each target. We combine these data with short spacing information from the IRAM large program EMPIRE, archival CO maps, tracers of stellar structure and recent star formation, and recent HCN surveys by Bigiel et al. and Usero et al. We test the degree to which changes in the dense gas fraction drive changes in the SFR. $I_{HCN}/I_{CO}$ (tracing the dense gas fraction) correlates strongly with $I_{CO}$ (tracing molecular gas surface density), stellar surface density, and dynamical equilibrium pressure, $P_{DE}$. Therefore, $I_{HCN}/I_{CO}$ becomes very low and HCN becomes very faint at large galactocentric radii, where ratios as low as $I_{HCN}/I_{CO} \sim 0.01$ become common. The apparent ability of dense gas to form stars, $\Sigma_{SFR}/\Sigma_{dense}$ (where $\Sigma_{dense}$ is traced by the HCN intensity and the star formation rate is traced by a combination of H$\alpha$ and 24$\mu$m emission), also depends on environment. $\Sigma_{SFR}/\Sigma_{dense}$ decreases in regions of high gas surface density, high stellar surface density, and high $P_{DE}$. Statistically, these correlations between environment and both $\Sigma_{SFR}/\Sigma_{dense}$ and $I_{HCN}/I_{CO}$ are stronger than that between apparent dense gas fraction ($I_{HCN}/I_{CO}$) and the apparent molecular gas star formation efficiency $\Sigma_{SFR}/\Sigma_{mol}$. Centaurus A, with its gas-rich elliptical host galaxy, NGC 5128, is the nearest radio galaxy at a distance of 3.8 Mpc. Its proximity allows us to study the interaction between an active galactic nucleus, radio jets, and molecular gas in great detail. We present ALMA observations of low J transitions of three CO isotopologues, HCN, HCO$^{+}$, HNC, CN, and CCH toward the inner projected 500 pc of NGC 5128. Our observations resolve physical sizes down to 40 pc. By observing multiple chemical probes, we determine the physical and chemical conditions of the nuclear interstellar medium of NGC 5128. This region contains molecular arms associated with the dust lanes and a circumnuclear disk (CND) interior to the molecular arms. The CND is approximately 400 pc by 200 pc and appears to be chemically distinct from the molecular arms. It is dominated by dense gas tracers while the molecular arms are dominated by $^{12}$CO and its rare isotopologues. The CND has a higher temperature, elevated CN/HCN and HCN/HNC intensity ratios, and much weaker $^{13}$CO and C$^{18}$O emission than the molecular arms. This suggests an influence from the AGN on the CND molecular gas. There is also absorption against the AGN with a low velocity complex near the systemic velocity and a high velocity complex shifted by about 60 km s$^{-1}$. We find similar chemical properties between the CND in emission and both the low and high velocity absorption complexes implying that both likely originate from the CND. If the HV complex does originate in the CND, then that gas would correspond to gas falling toward the supermassive black hole.

The Galactic Center contains large amounts of molecular and ionized gas as well as a plethora of energetic objects. Water masers are an extinction-insensitive probe for star formation and thus ideal for studies of star formation stages in this highly obscured region. With the Australia Telescope Compact Array, we observed 22 GHz water masers in the entire Central Molecular Zone with sub-parsec resolution as part of the large SWAG survey: ``Survey of Water and Ammonia in the Galactic Center''. We detect of order 600 22 GHz masers with isotropic luminosities down to ~10^-7 Lo. Masers with luminosities of >~10^-6 Lo are likely associated with young stellar objects. They appear to be close to molecular gas streamers and may be due to star formation events that are triggered at pericenter passages near Sgr A*. We report ALMA observations of $^{12}$CO(3-2) and $^{13}$CO(3-2) in the gas-poor dwarf galaxy NGC 5253. These 0.3"(5.5 pc) resolution images reveal small, dense molecular gas clouds that are located in kinematically distinct, extended filaments. Some of the filaments appear to be falling into the galaxy and may be fueling its current star formation. The most intense CO(3-2) emission comes from the central $\sim$100 pc region centered on the luminous radio-infrared HII region known as the supernebula. The CO(3-2) clumps within the starburst region are anti-correlated with H$\alpha$ on $\sim$5 pc scales, but are well-correlated with radio free-free emission. Cloud D1, which enshrouds the supernebula, has a high $^{12}$CO/$^{13}$CO ratio, as does another cloud within the central 100 pc starburst region, possibly because the clouds are hot. CO(3-2) emission alone does not allow determination of cloud masses as molecular gas temperature and column density are degenerate at the observed brightness, unless combined with other lines such as $^{13}$CO., Comment: 7 pages, 5 figures, Accepted to ApJ

The Survey of Water and Ammonia in the Galactic Center (SWAG) covers the Central Molecular Zone (CMZ) of the Milky Way at frequencies between 21.2 and 25.4 GHz obtained at the Australia Telescope Compact Array at $\sim 0.9$ pc spatial and $\sim 2.0$ km s$^{-1}$ spectral resolution. In this paper, we present data on the inner $\sim 250$ pc ($1.4^\circ$) between Sgr C and Sgr B2. We focus on the hyperfine structure of the metastable ammonia inversion lines (J,K) = (1,1) - (6,6) to derive column density, kinematics, opacity and kinetic gas temperature. In the CMZ molecular clouds, we find typical line widths of $8-16$ km s$^{-1}$ and extended regions of optically thick ($\tau > 1$) emission. Two components in kinetic temperature are detected at $25-50$ K and $60-100$ K, both being significantly hotter than dust temperatures throughout the CMZ. We discuss the physical state of the CMZ gas as traced by ammonia in the context of the orbital model by Kruijssen et al. (2015) that interprets the observed distribution as a stream of molecular clouds following an open eccentric orbit. This allows us to statistically investigate the time dependencies of gas temperature, column density and line width. We find heating rates between $\sim 50$ and $\sim 100$ K Myr$^{-1}$ along the stream orbit. No strong signs of time dependence are found for column density or line width. These quantities are likely dominated by cloud-to-cloud variations. We present Karl G Jansky Very Large Array molecular line observations of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253, from SWAN: "Survey of Water and Ammonia in Nearby galaxies". SWAN is a molecular line survey at centimeter wavelengths designed to reveal the physical conditions of star forming gas over a range of star forming galaxies. NGC 253 has been observed in four 1GHz bands from 21 to 36 GHz at 6" ($\sim100$pc) spatial and 3.5 km s$^{-1}$ spectral resolution. In total we detect 19 transitions from seven molecular and atomic species. We have targeted the metastable inversion transitions of ammonia (NH$_{3}$) from (1,1) to (5,5) and the (9,9) line, the 22.2 GHz water (H$_2$O) ($6_{16}-5_{23}$) maser, and the 36.1 GHz methanol (CH$_3$OH) ($4_{-1}-3_{0}$) maser. Utilizing NH$_{3}$ as a thermometer, we present evidence for uniform heating over the central kpc of NGC 253. The molecular gas is best described by a two kinetic temperature model with a warm 130K and a cooler 57K component. A comparison of these observations with previous ALMA results suggests that the molecular gas is not heated in photon dominated regions or shocks. It is possible that the gas is heated by turbulence or cosmic rays. In the galaxy center we find evidence for NH$_{3}$(3,3) masers. Furthermore we present velocities and luminosities of three water maser features related to the nuclear starburst. We partially resolve CH$_3$OH masers seen at the edges of the bright molecular emission, which coincides with expanding molecular superbubbles. We present a detailed study of a molecular outflow feature in the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 253 using ALMA. We find that this feature is clearly associated with the edge of NGC 253's prominent ionized outflow, has a projected length of ~300 pc, with a width of ~50 pc and a velocity dispersion of ~40 km s^-1, consistent with an ejection from the disk about 1 Myr ago. The kinematics of the molecular gas in this feature can be interpreted (albeit not uniquely) as accelerating at a rate of 1 km s^-1 pc^-1. In this scenario, the gas is approaching escape velocity at the last measured point. Strikingly, bright tracers of dense molecular gas (HCN, CN, HCO+, CS) are also detected in the molecular outflow: We measure an HCN(1-0)/CO(1-0) line ratio of ~1/10 in the outflow, similar to that in the central starburst region of NGC 253 and other starburst galaxies. By contrast, the HCN/CO line ratio in the NGC 253 disk is significantly lower (~1/30), similar to other nearby galaxy disks. This strongly suggests that the streamer gas originates from the starburst, and that its physical state does not change significantly over timescales of ~1 Myr during its entrainment in the outflow. Simple calculations indicate that radiation pressure is not the main mechanism for driving the outflow. We present subarcsecond images of submillimeter CO and continuum emission from a local galaxy forming massive star clusters: the blue compact dwarf galaxy II Zw 40. At $\sim$0.4" resolution (20 pc), the CO(3-2), CO(1-0), 3mm and 870${\mu}$m continuum maps illustrate star formation on the scales of individual molecular clouds. Dust contributes about a third of the 870${\mu}$m continuum emission, with free-free accounting for the rest. On these scales, there is not a good correspondence between gas, dust, and free-free emission. Dust continuum is enhanced toward the star-forming region as compared to the CO emission. We suggest that an unexpectedly low and spatially variable gas-to-dust ratio is the result of massive clusters of the starburst., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures

SWAG ("Survey of Water and Ammonia in the Galactic Center") is a multi-line interferometric survey toward the Center of the Milky Way conducted with the Australia Telescope Compact Array. The survey region spans the entire ~400pc Central Molecular Zone and comprises ~42 spectral lines at pc spatial and sub-km/s spectral resolution. In addition, we deeply map continuum intensity, spectral index, and polarization at the frequencies where synchrotron, free-free, and thermal dust sources emit. The observed spectral lines include many transitions of ammonia, which we use to construct maps of molecular gas temperature, opacity and gas formation temperature (see poster by Nico Krieger et al., this volume). Water masers pinpoint the sites of active star formation and other lines are good tracers for density, radiation field, shocks, and ionization. We present ALMA observations of the inner 1' (1.2 kpc) of the Circinus galaxy, the nearest Seyfert. We target CO (1-0) in the region associated with a well-known multiphase outflow driven by the central active galactic nucleus (AGN). While the geometry of Circinus and its outflow make disentangling the latter difficult, we see indications of outflowing molecular gas at velocities consistent with the ionized outflow. We constrain the mass of the outflowing molecular gas to be 1.5e5 -5.1e6 solar masses, yielding a molecular outflow rate of 0.35-12.3 solar masses per year. The values within this range are comparable to the star formation rate in Circinus, indicating that the outflow indeed regulates star formation to some degree. The molecular outflow in Circinus is considerably lower in mass and energetics than previously-studied AGN-driven outflows, especially given its high ratio of AGN luminosity to bolometric luminosity. The molecular outflow in Circinus is, however, consistent with some trends put forth in Cicone et al. (2014), including a linear relation between kinetic power and AGN luminosity, as well as its momentum rate vs. bolometric luminosity (although the latter places Circinus among the starburst galaxies in that sample). We observe Arp 220, the nearest Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxy (ULIRG), over 4 GHz in the K and Ka bands. We provide constraints for the kinematics,morphology, and identify molecular species on scales resolving both nuclei (0.6" or 230 pc). We detect multiple molecular species, including hydroxyl in both cores. We tentatively detect H2O at 21.84 GHz in both nuclei, indicating the likely presence of maser emission. The observed frequency range also contains metastable ammonia transitions from (J,K) = (1,1) to (5,5), as well as the (9,9) inversion line, which, together are a well-known thermometer of dense molecular gas. Furthermore, the non-metastable (4,2) and (10,9) and possibly the (3,1) lines are also detected. We apply a standard temperature analysis to Arp 220. However, the analysis is complicated in that standard LTE assumptions do not hold. There are indications that a substantial fraction of ammonia could be in the non-metastable transitions as opposed to only the metastable ones. Thus, the non-metastable transitions could be essential to constraining the temperature. Compiling data from literature and the ALMA archive, we show enhanced HCN(4-3)/HCO$^+$(4-3) and/or HCN(4-3)/CS(7-6) integrated intensity ratios in circumnuclear molecular gas around active galactic nuclei (AGNs) compared to those in starburst (SB) galaxies (submillimeter HCN-enhancement). The number of sample galaxies is significantly increased from our previous work. We expect this feature could potentially be an extinction-free energy diagnostic tool of nuclear regions of galaxies. Non-LTE radiative transfer modelings of the above molecular emission lines involving both collisional and radiative excitation, as well as a photon trapping effect were conducted to investigate the cause of the high line ratios in AGNs. As a result, we found that enhanced abundance ratios of HCN-to-HCO$^+$ and HCN-to-CS in AGNs as compared to SB galaxies by a factor of a few to even $>$ 10 is a plausible explanation for the submillimeter HCN-enhancement. However, a counter argument of a systematically higher gas density in AGNs than in SB galaxies can also be a plausible scenario. Although we could not fully discriminate these two scenarios at this moment due to insufficient amount of multi-transition, multi-species data, the former scenario equivalently claims for abnormal chemical composition in AGNs. Regarding the actual mechanism to realize the composition, we suggest it is difficult with conventional gas phase X-ray dominated region (XDR) ionization models to reproduce the observed high line ratios. We might have to take into account other mechanisms such as neutral-neutral reactions that are efficiently activated at high temperature environments and/or mechanically heated regions to further understand the high line ratios in AGNs., Comment: 24 pages, 12 figures, accepted for publication in ApJ

This white paper discusses how a "next-generation" Very Large Array (ngVLA) operating in the frequency range 1-116 GHz could be a groundbreaking tool to study the detailed astrophysics of the "matter cycle" in the Milky Way and other galaxies. If optimized for high brightness sensitivity, the ngVLA would bring detailed microwave spectroscopy and modeling of the full radio spectral energy distribution into regular use as survey tools at resolutions of 0.1- 1 arcseconds. This wavelength range includes powerful diagnostics of density, excitation, and chemistry in the cold ISM, as well as multiple tracers of the rate of recent star formation, the magnetic field, shocks, and properties of the ionized ISM. We highlight design considerations that would make this facility revolutionary in this area, the foremost of which is a large amount of collecting area on ~km-length baselines. We also emphasize the strong case for harnessing the large proposed collecting area of the ngVLA for very long baseline applications as part of the core design. This would allow measurements of the three dimensional space motions of galaxies to beyond the Local Group and mapping of the Milky Way out to the far side of the disk. Finally, we discuss the gains from the proposed combination of very high resolution and sensitivity to thermal emission, which include observing the feeding of black holes and resolving forming protoclusters., Comment: 40 pages. We report Karl G. Jansky Very Large Array (VLA) and Atacama Large Millimeter Array (ALMA) spectroscopy in the redshifted molecular oxygen (O$_2$) 56.265~GHz and 424.763~GHz transitions from the $z=0.88582$ gravitational lens towards PKS\,1830$-$21. The ALMA non-detection of O$_2$ 424.763~GHz absorption yields the $3\sigma$ upper limit $N({\rm O}_2) \leq 5.8 \times 10^{17}$~cm$^{-2}$ on the O$_2$ column density, assuming that the O$_2$ level populations are thermalized at the gas kinetic temperature of 80~K. The VLA spectrum shows absorption by the CH$_3$CHO 56.185~GHz and 56.265~GHz lines, with the latter strongly blended with the O$_2$ 56.265~GHz line. Since the two CH$_3$CHO lines have the same equilibrium strength, we used the known CH$_3$CHO 56.185~GHz line profile to subtract out the CH$_3$CHO 56.265~GHz feature from the VLA spectrum, and then carried out a search for O$_2$ 56.265~GHz absorption in the residual spectrum. The non-detection of redshifted O$_2$ 56.265~GHz absorption in the CH$_3$CHO-subtracted VLA spectrum yields $N({\rm O}_2) \leq 2.3 \times 10^{17}$~cm$^{-2}$. Our $3\sigma$ limits on the O$_2$ abundance relative to H$_2$ are then $X({\rm O}_2) \leq 9.1 \times 10^{-6}$ (VLA) and $X({\rm O}_2) \leq 2.3 \times 10^{-5}$ (ALMA). These are $5-15$ times lower than the best previous constraint on the O$_2$ abundance in an external galaxy. The low O$_2$ abundance in the $z= 0.88582$ absorber may arise due to its high neutral carbon abundance and the fact that its molecular clouds appear to be diffuse or translucent clouds with low number density and high kinetic temperature., Comment: 5 pages, 3 figures; accepted for publication in Astrophysical Journal Letters
