The Wheatstone bridge experiment is a fundamental component of the undergraduate physics curriculum, traditionally taught as a hands-on activity to explore resistance measurement and circuit balancing. This study introduces a pedagogical approach that combines qualitative symmetry-based analysis with quantitative computer-based sensitivity simulations, enhancing students' understanding and engagement. A key focus is demonstrating how balanced configurations in the Wheatstone bridge affect circuit sensitivity, providing students with an intuitive grasp of the relationship between symmetry and measurement accuracy. Using simulations, we investigate the impact of internal resistances in the galvanometer and power supply, showing that lower resistances increase the circuit's sensitivity to minor resistance changes. Additionally, various resistor configurations are analyzed, highlighting the effect of careful adjustments in achieving maximal sensitivity. A Bayesian optimization-based software tool was developed to guide students in selecting optimal component values, thereby minimizing the need for manual adjustments while ensuring accurate measurements. This integrated approach bridges traditional experimentation with computational techniques, fostering critical thinking and preparing students for modern scientific practices. The study demonstrates that this enriched methodology significantly enhances the learning experience, equipping students with valuable skills in both experimental and computational aspects of physics.

Cellular activities are dynamic and intricate, playing a crucial role in advancing diagnostic and therapeutic techniques, yet they often require substantial resources for accurate tracking. Despite recent progress, the conventional multi-stage cell tracking approaches not only heavily rely on detection or segmentation results as a prerequisite for the tracking stage, demanding plenty of refined segmentation masks, but are also deteriorated by imbalanced and long sequence data, leading to under-learning in training and missing cells in inference procedures. To alleviate the above issues, this paper proposes the novel end-to-end CAP framework, which leverages the idea of regarding Cell as Point to achieve efficient and stable cell tracking in one stage. CAP abandons detection or segmentation stages and simplifies the process by exploiting the correlation among the trajectories of cell points to track cells jointly, thus reducing the label demand and complexity of the pipeline. With cell point trajectory and visibility to represent cell locations and lineage relationships, CAP leverages the key innovations of adaptive event-guided (AEG) sampling for addressing data imbalance in cell division events and the rolling-as-window (RAW) inference method to ensure continuous tracking of new cells in the long term. Eliminating the need for a prerequisite detection or segmentation stage, CAP demonstrates strong cell tracking performance while also being 10 to 55 times more efficient than existing methods. Learning models of dynamical systems with external inputs, that may be, for example, nonsmooth or piecewise, is crucial for studying complex phenomena and predicting future state evolution, which is essential for applications such as safety guarantees and decision-making. In this work, we introduce \emph{Input Concomitant Neural ODEs (ICODEs)}, which incorporate precise real-time input information into the learning process of the models, rather than treating the inputs as hidden parameters to be learned. The sufficient conditions to ensure the model's contraction property are provided to guarantee that system trajectories of the trained model converge to a fixed point, regardless of initial conditions across different training processes. We validate our method through experiments on several representative real dynamics: Single-link robot, DC-to-DC converter, motion dynamics of a rigid body, Rabinovich-Fabrikant equation, Glycolytic-glycogenolytic pathway model, and heat conduction equation. The experimental results demonstrate that our proposed ICODEs efficiently learn the ground truth systems, achieving superior prediction performance under both typical and atypical inputs. This work offers a valuable class of neural ODE models for understanding physical systems with explicit external input information, with potential promising applications in fields such as physics and robotics.

Multimodal Large Language Models (MLLMs) have made significant advancements, demonstrating powerful capabilities in processing and understanding multimodal data. Fine-tuning MLLMs with Federated Learning (FL) allows for expanding the training data scope by including private data sources, thereby enhancing their practical applicability in privacy-sensitive domains. However, current research remains in the early stage, particularly in addressing the \textbf{multimodal heterogeneities} in real-world applications. In this paper, we introduce a benchmark for evaluating various downstream tasks in the federated fine-tuning of MLLMs within multimodal heterogeneous scenarios, laying the groundwork for the research in the field. Our benchmark encompasses two datasets, five comparison baselines, and four multimodal scenarios, incorporating over ten types of modal heterogeneities. To address the challenges posed by modal heterogeneity, we develop a general FedMLLM framework that integrates four representative FL methods alongside two modality-agnostic strategies. Extensive experimental results show that our proposed FL paradigm improves the performance of MLLMs by broadening the range of training data and mitigating multimodal heterogeneity. Parton And-hadron China Institute of Atomic Energy (PACIAE) is a multipurpose Monte Carlo event generator developed to describe a wide range of high-energy collisions, including lepton-lepton, lepton-hadron, lepton-nucleus, hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions. It is built based on the PYTHIA program, and incorporates parton and hadron cascades to address the nuclear medium effects. PACIAE 4.0 is the new generation of PACIAE model surpassing the version 3.0. In PACIAE 4.0, the old fixed-format FORTRAN 77 code has been refactored and rewritten by the free-format modern Fortran and C++ languages. The C++-based PYTHIA 8.3 is interfaced in, while previous versions connected to the Fortran-based PYTHIA 6.4 only. Several improvements are also introduced, which enable PACIAE 4.0 to contain more physics and features to model the high-energy collisions. This is the first attempt to transition PACIAE from Fortran to C++.

New emerging flux (NEF) has long been considered a mechanism for solar eruptions, but detailed process remains an open question. In this work, we explore how NEF drives a coronal magnetic configuration to erupt. This configuration is created by two magnetic sources of strengths $M$ and $S$ embedded in the photosphere, one electric-current-carrying flux rope (FR) floating in the corona, and an electric current induced on the photospheric surface by the FR. The source $M$ is fixed accounting for the initial background field, and $S$ changes playing the role of NEF. We introduce the channel function $C$ to forecast the overall evolutionary behavior of the configuration. Location, polarity, and strength of NEF governs the evolutionary behavior of FR before eruption. In the case of $|S/M|<1$ with reconnection occur between new and old fields, the configuration in equilibrium evolves to the critical state, invoking the catastrophe. In this case, if polarities of the new and old fields are opposite, reconnection occurs as NEF is close to FR; and if polarities are the same, reconnection happens as NEF appears far from FR. With different combinations of the relative polarity and the location, the evolutionary behavior of the system gets complex, and the catastrophe may not occur. If $|S/M|>1$ and the two fields have opposite polarity, the catastrophe always takes place; but if the polarities are the same, catastrophe occurs only as NEF is located far from FR; otherwise, the evolution ends up either with failed eruption or without catastrophe at all., Comment: 18 pages, 7 figures, accepted by ApJL

In this paper, we model the minimum achievable throughput within a transmission block of restricted duration and aim to maximize it in movable antenna (MA)-enabled multiuser downlink communications. Particularly, we account for the antenna moving delay caused by mechanical movement, which has not been fully considered in previous studies, and reveal the trade-off between the delay and signal-to-interference-plus-noise ratio at users. To this end, we first consider a single-user setup to analyze the necessity of antenna movement. By quantizing the virtual angles of arrival, we derive the requisite region size for antenna moving, design the initial MA position, and elucidate the relationship between quantization resolution and moving region size. Furthermore, an efficient algorithm is developed to optimize MA position via successive convex approximation, which is subsequently extended to the general multiuser setup. Numerical results demonstrate that the proposed algorithms outperform fixed-position antenna schemes and existing ones without consideration of movement delay. Additionally, our algorithms exhibit excellent adaptability and stability across various transmission block durations and moving region sizes, and are robust to different antenna moving speeds. This allows the hardware cost of MA-aided systems to be reduced by employing low rotational speed motors.

Intelligent omni-surfaces (IOSs) with 360-degree electromagnetic radiation significantly improves the performance of wireless systems, while an adversarial IOS also poses a significant potential risk for physical layer security. In this paper, we propose a "DISCO" IOS (DIOS) based fully-passive jammer (FPJ) that can launch omnidirectional fully-passive jamming attacks. In the proposed DIOS-based FPJ, the interrelated refractive and reflective (R&R) coefficients of the adversarial IOS are randomly generated, acting like a "DISCO" that distributes wireless energy radiated by the base station. By introducing active channel aging (ACA) during channel coherence time, the DIOS-based FPJ can perform omnidirectional fully-passive jamming without neither jamming power nor channel knowledge of legitimate users (LUs). To characterize the impact of the DIOS-based PFJ, we derive the statistical characteristics of DIOS-jammed channels based on two widely-used IOS models, i.e., the constant-amplitude model and the variable-amplitude model. Consequently, the asymptotic analysis of the ergodic achievable sum rates under the DIOS-based omnidirectional fully-passive jamming is given based on the derived stochastic characteristics for both the two IOS models. Based on the derived analysis, the omnidirectional jamming impact of the proposed DIOS-based FPJ implemented by a constant-amplitude IOS does not depend on either the quantization number or the stochastic distribution of the DIOS coefficients, while the conclusion does not hold on when a variable-amplitude IOS is used. Numerical results based on one-bit quantization of the IOS phase shifts are provided to verify the effectiveness of the derived theoretical analysis. Numerical reasoning is pivotal in various artificial intelligence applications, such as natural language processing and recommender systems, where it involves using entities, relations, and attribute values (e.g., weight, length) to infer new factual relations (e.g., the Nile is longer than the Amazon). However, existing approaches encounter two critical challenges in modeling: (1) semantic relevance-the challenge of insufficiently capturing the necessary contextual interactions among entities, relations, and numerical attributes, often resulting in suboptimal inference; and (2) semantic ambiguity-the difficulty in accurately distinguishing ordinal relationships during numerical reasoning, which compromises the generation of high-quality samples and limits the effectiveness of contrastive learning. To address these challenges, we propose the novel Knowledge-Aware Attributes Embedding model (KAAE) for knowledge graph embeddings in numerical reasoning. Specifically, to overcome the challenge of semantic relevance, we introduce a Mixture-of-Experts-Knowledge-Aware (MoEKA) Encoder, designed to integrate the semantics of entities, relations, and numerical attributes into a joint semantic space. To tackle semantic ambiguity, we implement a new ordinal knowledge contrastive learning (OKCL) strategy that generates high-quality ordinal samples from the original data with the aid of ordinal relations, capturing fine-grained semantic nuances essential for accurate numerical reasoning. Experiments on three public benchmark datasets demonstrate the superior performance of KAAE across various attribute value distributions.

The driven dynamics of localization transitions in a non-Hermitian Disorder-Aubry-Andr\'{e} (DAA) model are thoroughly examined under both open boundary conditions (OBC) and periodic boundary conditions (PBC). Through an analysis of the static properties of observables, including the localization length ($\xi$), inverse participation ratio ($\rm IPR$), and energy gap ($\Delta E$), we found that the critical exponents examined under PBC are also applicable under OBC. The Kibble-Zurek scaling (KZS) for the driven dynamics in the non-Hermitian DAA systems is formulated and numerically verified for different quench directions. Notably, for the dynamical paths considered, boundary conditions had minimal impact on the evolution process. This study generalizes the application of the KZS to the dynamical localization transitions within systems featuring dual localization mechanisms.

The cameras equipped on mobile terminals employ different sensors in different photograph modes, and the transferability of raw domain denoising models between these sensors is significant but remains sufficient exploration. Industrial solutions either develop distinct training strategies and models for different sensors or ignore the differences between sensors and simply extend existing models to new sensors, which leads to tedious training or unsatisfactory performance. In this paper, we introduce a new benchmark, the Multi-Sensor SIDD (MSSIDD) dataset, which is the first raw-domain dataset designed to evaluate the sensor transferability of denoising models. The MSSIDD dataset consists of 60,000 raw images of six distinct sensors, derived through the degeneration of sRGB images via different camera sensor parameters. Furthermore, we propose a sensor consistency training framework that enables denoising models to learn the sensor-invariant features, thereby facilitating the generalization of the consistent model to unseen sensors. We evaluate previous arts on the newly proposed MSSIDD dataset, and the experimental results validate the effectiveness of our proposed method. Objective: Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a complex autoimmune disease characterized by unpredictable flares. This study aimed to develop a novel proteomics-based risk prediction model specifically for Asian SLE populations to enhance personalized disease management and early intervention. Methods: A longitudinal cohort study was conducted over 48 weeks, including 139 SLE patients monitored every 12 weeks. Patients were classified into flare (n = 53) and non-flare (n = 86) groups. Baseline plasma samples underwent data-independent acquisition (DIA) proteomics analysis, and phenome-wide Mendelian randomization (PheWAS) was performed to evaluate causal relationships between proteins and clinical predictors. Logistic regression (LR) and random forest (RF) models were used to integrate proteomic and clinical data for flare risk prediction. Results: Five proteins (SAA1, B4GALT5, GIT2, NAA15, and RPIA) were significantly associated with SLE Disease Activity Index-2K (SLEDAI-2K) scores and 1-year flare risk, implicating key pathways such as B-cell receptor signaling and platelet degranulation. SAA1 demonstrated causal effects on flare-related clinical markers, including hemoglobin and red blood cell counts. A combined model integrating clinical and proteomic data achieved the highest predictive accuracy (AUC = 0.769), surpassing individual models. SAA1 was highlighted as a priority biomarker for rapid flare discrimination. Conclusion: The integration of proteomic and clinical data significantly improves flare prediction in Asian SLE patients. The identification of key proteins and their causal relationships with flare-related clinical markers provides valuable insights for proactive SLE management and personalized therapeutic approaches.

Virtual reality (VR), while enhancing user experiences, introduces significant privacy risks. This paper reveals a novel vulnerability in VR systems that allows attackers to capture VR privacy through obstacles utilizing millimeter-wave (mmWave) signals without physical intrusion and virtual connection with the VR devices. We propose mmSpyVR, a novel attack on VR user's privacy via mmWave radar. The mmSpyVR framework encompasses two main parts: (i) A transfer learning-based feature extraction model to achieve VR feature extraction from mmWave signal. (ii) An attention-based VR privacy spying module to spy VR privacy information from the extracted feature. The mmSpyVR demonstrates the capability to extract critical VR privacy from the mmWave signals that have penetrated through obstacles. We evaluate mmSpyVR through IRB-approved user studies. Across 22 participants engaged in four experimental scenes utilizing VR devices from three different manufacturers, our system achieves an application recognition accuracy of 98.5\% and keystroke recognition accuracy of 92.6\%. This newly discovered vulnerability has implications across various domains, such as cybersecurity, privacy protection, and VR technology development. We offer theoretical and empirical insights into the impact of exogenous randomness on the effectiveness of random forests with tree-building rules independent of training data. We formally introduce the concept of exogenous randomness and identify two types of commonly existing randomness: Type I from feature subsampling, and Type II from tie-breaking in tree-building processes. We develop non-asymptotic expansions for the mean squared error (MSE) for both individual trees and forests and establish sufficient and necessary conditions for their consistency. In the special example of the linear regression model with independent features, our MSE expansions are more explicit, providing more understanding of the random forests' mechanisms. It also allows us to derive an upper bound on the MSE with explicit consistency rates for trees and forests. Guided by our theoretical findings, we conduct simulations to further explore how exogenous randomness enhances random forest performance. Our findings unveil that feature subsampling reduces both the bias and variance of random forests compared to individual trees, serving as an adaptive mechanism to balance bias and variance. Furthermore, our results reveal an intriguing phenomenon: the presence of noise features can act as a "blessing" in enhancing the performance of random forests thanks to feature subsampling., Comment: 103 pages, 10 figures

We present a novel approach for minimally invasive flexible needle manipulations by pairing a real-time finite element simulator with the cross-entropy method. Additionally, we demonstrate how a kinematic-driven bang-bang controller can complement the control framework for better tracking performance. We show how electromagnetic (EM) tracking can be readily incorporated into the framework to provide controller feedback. Federated learning (FL) has become a cornerstone in decentralized learning, where, in many scenarios, the incoming data distribution will change dynamically over time, introducing continuous learning (CL) problems. This continual federated learning (CFL) task presents unique challenges, particularly regarding catastrophic forgetting and non-IID input data. Existing solutions include using a replay buffer to store historical data or leveraging generative adversarial networks. Nevertheless, motivated by recent advancements in the diffusion model for generative tasks, this paper introduces DCFL, a novel framework tailored to address the challenges of CFL in dynamic distributed learning environments. Our approach harnesses the power of the conditional diffusion model to generate synthetic historical data at each local device during communication, effectively mitigating latent shifts in dynamic data distribution inputs. We provide the convergence bound for the proposed CFL framework and demonstrate its promising performance across multiple datasets, showcasing its effectiveness in tackling the complexities of CFL tasks.

Vision Transformers (ViTs) have shown exceptional performance in vehicle re-identification (ReID) tasks. However, non-square aspect ratios of image or video inputs can negatively impact re-identification accuracy. To address this challenge, we propose a novel, human perception driven, and general ViT-based ReID framework that fuses models trained on various aspect ratios. Our key contributions are threefold: (i) We analyze the impact of aspect ratios on performance using the VeRi-776 and VehicleID datasets, providing guidance for input settings based on the distribution of original image aspect ratios. (ii) We introduce patch-wise mixup strategy during ViT patchification (guided by spatial attention scores) and implement uneven stride for better alignment with object aspect ratios. (iii) We propose a dynamic feature fusion ReID network to enhance model robustness. Our method outperforms state-of-the-art transformer-based approaches on both datasets, with only a minimal increase in inference time per image.

Shared energy storage systems (ESS) present a promising solution to the temporal imbalance between energy generation from renewable distributed generators (DGs) and the power demands of prosumers. However, as DG penetration rates rise, spatial energy imbalances become increasingly significant, necessitating the integration of peer-to-peer (P2P) energy trading within the shared ESS framework. Two key challenges emerge in this context: the absence of effective mechanisms and the greater difficulty for privacy protection due to increased data communication. This research proposes a capacity renting framework for shared ESS considering P2P energy trading of prosumers. In the proposed framework, prosumers can participate in P2P energy trading and rent capacities from shared ESS. A generalized Nash game is formulated to model the trading process and the competitive interactions among prosumers, and the variational equilibrium of the game is proved to be equivalent to the optimal solution of a quadratic programming (QP) problem. To address the privacy protection concern, the problem is solved using the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) with the Paillier cryptosystem. Finally, numerical simulations demonstrate the impact of P2P energy trading on the shared ESS framework and validate the effectiveness of the proposed privacy-preserving algorithm.

With the rise of social media and peer-to-peer networks, users increasingly rely on crowdsourced responses for information and assistance. However, the mechanisms used to rank and promote responses often prioritize and end up biasing in favor of timeliness over quality, which may result in suboptimal support for help-seekers. We analyze millions of responses to mental health-related posts, utilizing large language models (LLMs) to assess the multi-dimensional quality of content, including relevance, empathy, and cultural alignment, among other aspects. Our findings reveal a mismatch between content quality and attention allocation: earlier responses - despite being relatively lower in quality - receive disproportionately high fractions of upvotes and visibility due to platform ranking algorithms. We demonstrate that the quality of the top-ranked responses could be improved by up to 39 percent, and even the simplest re-ranking strategy could significantly improve the quality of top responses, highlighting the need for more nuanced ranking mechanisms that prioritize both timeliness and content quality, especially emotional engagement in online mental health communities., Comment: 9 pages, 6 figures

P\'olya in 1926 showed that the hypergeometric function $F(z)=\null_2F_1(a,b;c;z)$ has a totally monotone sequence as its coefficients; that is, $F$ is the generating function of a Hausdorff moment sequence, when $0\le a\le 1$ and $0\le b\le c.$ In this paper, we give a complete characterization of such hypergeometric functions $F$ in terms of complex parameters $a,b,c.$ To this end, we study the class of general properties of generating functions of Hausdorff moment sequences and, in particular, we provide a sufficient condition for the class by making use of a Phragm\`en-Lindel\"of type theorem. This paper proposes a new method for accurate and robust 6D pose estimation of novel objects, named GS2Pose. By introducing 3D Gaussian splatting, GS2Pose can utilize the reconstruction results without requiring a high-quality CAD model, which means it only requires segmented RGBD images as input. Specifically, GS2Pose employs a two-stage structure consisting of coarse estimation followed by refined estimation. In the coarse stage, a lightweight U-Net network with a polarization attention mechanism, called Pose-Net, is designed. By using the 3DGS model for supervised training, Pose-Net can generate NOCS images to compute a coarse pose. In the refinement stage, GS2Pose formulates a pose regression algorithm following the idea of reprojection or Bundle Adjustment (BA), referred to as GS-Refiner. By leveraging Lie algebra to extend 3DGS, GS-Refiner obtains a pose-differentiable rendering pipeline that refines the coarse pose by comparing the input images with the rendered images. GS-Refiner also selectively updates parameters in the 3DGS model to achieve environmental adaptation, thereby enhancing the algorithm's robustness and flexibility to illuminative variation, occlusion, and other challenging disruptive factors. GS2Pose was evaluated through experiments conducted on the LineMod dataset, where it was compared with similar algorithms, yielding highly competitive results. Pulsar Timing Arrays (PTAs) offer an independent method for searching for ultralight dark matter (ULDM), whose wavelike nature induces periodic oscillations in the arrival times of radio pulses. In addition to this gravitational effect, the direct coupling between ULDM and ordinary matter results in pulsar spin fluctuations and reference clock shifts, leading to observable effects in PTAs. The second data release from the European PTA (EPTA) indicates that ULDM cannot account for all dark matter in the mass range $m_{\phi} \in [10^{-24.0}, 10^{-23.3}] \text{ eV}$ based solely on gravitational effects. In this work, we derive constraints on the coupling coefficients by considering both gravitational and coupling effects. Our results demonstrate that EPTA provides stronger constraints on these couplings than previous PTA experiments, and it establishes similar or even tighter constraints compared to other precise experiments, such as atomic clock experiments., Comment: 7 pages, 1 figure and 1 table

The instruments at the focus of the Euclid space observatory offer superb, diffraction-limited imaging over an unprecedented (from space) wide field of view of 0.57 deg$^2$. This exquisite image quality has the potential to produce high-precision astrometry for point sources once the undersampling of Euclid's cameras is taken into account by means of accurate, effective point spread function (ePSF) modelling. We present a complex, detailed workflow to simultaneously solve for the geometric distortion (GD) and model the undersampled ePSFs of the Euclid detectors. Our procedure was successfully developed and tested with data from the Early Release Observations (ERO) programme focused on the nearby globular cluster NGC 6397. Our final one-dimensional astrometric precision for a well-measured star just below saturation is 0.7 mas (0.007 pixel) for the Visible Instrument (VIS) and 3 mas (0.01 pixel) for the Near-Infrared Spectrometer and Photometer (NISP). Finally, we present a specific scientific application of this high-precision astrometry: the combination of Euclid and Gaia data to compute proper motions and study the internal kinematics of NGC 6397. Future work, when more data become available, will allow for a better characterisation of the ePSFs and GD corrections that are derived here, along with assessment of their temporal stability, and their dependencies on the spectral energy distribution of the sources as seen through the wide-band filters of Euclid., Comment: 23 pages, 21 figures. Neural ODEs (NODEs) are continuous-time neural networks (NNs) that can process data without the limitation of time intervals. They have advantages in learning and understanding the evolution of complex real dynamics. Many previous works have focused on NODEs in concise forms, while numerous physical systems taking straightforward forms, in fact, belong to their more complex quasi-classes, thus appealing to a class of general NODEs with high scalability and flexibility to model those systems. This, however, may result in intricate nonlinear properties. In this paper, we introduce ControlSynth Neural ODEs (CSODEs). We show that despite their highly nonlinear nature, convergence can be guaranteed via tractable linear inequalities. In the composition of CSODEs, we introduce an extra control term for learning the potential simultaneous capture of dynamics at different scales, which could be particularly useful for partial differential equation-formulated systems. Finally, we compare several representative NNs with CSODEs on important physical dynamics under the inductive biases of CSODEs, and illustrate that CSODEs have better learning and predictive abilities in these settings.

The passive and frequency-flat reflection of IRS, as well as the high-dimensional IRS-reflected channels, have posed significant challenges for efficient IRS channel estimation, especially in wideband communication systems with significant multi-path channel delay spread. To address these challenges, we propose a novel neural network (NN)-empowered framework for IRS channel autocorrelation matrix estimation in wideband orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) systems. This framework relies only on the easily accessible reference signal received power (RSRP) measurements at users in existing wideband communication systems, without requiring additional pilot transmission. Based on the estimates of channel autocorrelation matrix, the passive reflection of IRS is optimized to maximize the average user received signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) over all subcarriers in the OFDM system. Numerical results verify that the proposed algorithm significantly outperforms existing powermeasurement-based IRS reflection designs in wideband channels.

Automated detection of chemical plumes presents a segmentation challenge. The segmentation problem for gas plumes is difficult due to the diffusive nature of the cloud. The advantage of considering hyperspectral images in the gas plume detection problem over the conventional RGB imagery is the presence of non-visual data, allowing for a richer representation of information. In this paper we present an effective method of visualizing hyperspectral video sequences containing chemical plumes and investigate the effectiveness of segmentation techniques on these post-processed videos. Our approach uses a combination of dimension reduction and histogram equalization to prepare the hyperspectral videos for segmentation. First, Principal Components Analysis (PCA) is used to reduce the dimension of the entire video sequence. This is done by projecting each pixel onto the first few Principal Components resulting in a type of spectral filter. Next, a Midway method for histogram equalization is used. These methods redistribute the intensity values in order to reduce flicker between frames. This properly prepares these high-dimensional video sequences for more traditional segmentation techniques. We compare the ability of various clustering techniques to properly segment the chemical plume. These include K-means, spectral clustering, and the Ginzburg-Landau functional.

To ensure the thriving development of low-altitude economy, countering unauthorized unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) is an essential task. The existing widely deployed base stations hold great potential for joint communication and jamming. In light of this, this paper investigates the joint design of beamforming to simultaneously support communication with legitimate users and countermeasure against unauthorized UAVs based on dual-functional multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) cellular systems. We first formulate a joint communication and jamming (JCJ) problem, relaxing it through semi-definite relaxation (SDR) to obtain a tractable semi-definite programming (SDP) problem, with SDR providing an essential step toward simplifying the complex JCJ design. Although the solution to the relaxed SDP problem cannot directly solve the original problem, it offers valuable insights for further refinement. Therefore, we design a novel constraint specifically tailored to the structure of the SDP problem, ensuring that the solution adheres to the rank-1 constraint of the original problem. Recent advances in aligning large language models with human preferences have corroborated the growing importance of best-of-N distillation (BOND). However, the iterative BOND algorithm is prohibitively expensive in practice due to the sample and computation inefficiency. This paper addresses the problem by revealing a unified game-theoretic connection between iterative BOND and self-play alignment, which unifies seemingly disparate algorithmic paradigms. Based on the connection, we establish a novel framework, WIN rate Dominance (WIND), with a series of efficient algorithms for regularized win rate dominance optimization that approximates iterative BOND in the parameter space. We provides provable sample efficiency guarantee for one of the WIND variant with the square loss objective. The experimental results confirm that our algorithm not only accelerates the computation, but also achieves superior sample efficiency compared to existing methods.

A wide variety of data can be represented using third-order tensors, spanning applications in chemometrics, psychometrics, and image processing. However, traditional data-driven frameworks are not naturally equipped to process tensors without first unfolding or flattening the data, which can result in a loss of crucial higher-order structural information. In this article, we introduce a novel framework for the data-driven analysis of T-product-based dynamical systems (TPDSs), where the system evolution is governed by the T-product between a third-order dynamic tensor and a third-order state tensor. In particular, we examine the data informativity of TPDSs concerning system identification, stability, controllability, and stabilizability and illustrate significant computational improvements over traditional approaches by leveraging the unique properties of the T-product. We consider the adaptive-rank integration of general time-dependent advection-diffusion partial differential equations (PDEs) with spatially variable coefficients. We employ a standard finite-difference method for spatial discretization coupled with diagonally implicit Runge-Kutta schemes for temporal discretization. The fully discretized scheme can be written as a generalized Sylvester equation, which we solve with an adaptive-rank algorithm structured around three key strategies: (i) constructing dimension-wise subspaces based on an extended Krylov strategy, (ii) developing an effective Averaged-Coefficient Sylvester (ACS) preconditioner to invert the reduced system for the coefficient matrix efficiently, and (iii) efficiently computing the residual of the equation without explicitly reverting to the full-rank form. The proposed approach features a computational complexity of O(Nr2 + r3), where r represents the rank during the Krylov iteration and N is the resolution in one dimension, commensurate with the constant-coefficient case [El Kahza et al, J. Comput. Phys., 518 (2024)]. We present numerical examples that illustrate the computational efficacy and complexity of our algorithm.

The task of macro- and micro-expression spotting aims to precisely localize and categorize temporal expression instances within untrimmed videos. Given the sparse distribution and varying durations of expressions, existing anchor-based methods often represent instances by encoding their deviations from predefined anchors. Additionally, these methods typically slice the untrimmed videos into fixed-length sliding windows. However, anchor-based encoding often fails to capture all training intervals, and slicing the original video as sliding windows can result in valuable training intervals being discarded. To overcome these limitations, we introduce PESFormer, a simple yet effective model based on the vision transformer architecture to achieve point-to-interval expression spotting. PESFormer employs a direct timestamp encoding (DTE) approach to replace anchors, enabling binary classification of each timestamp instead of optimizing entire ground truths. Thus, all training intervals are retained in the form of discrete timestamps. To maximize the utilization of training intervals, we enhance the preprocessing process by replacing the short videos produced through the sliding window method.Instead, we implement a strategy that involves zero-padding the untrimmed training videos to create uniform, longer videos of a predetermined duration. This operation efficiently preserves the original training intervals and eliminates video slice enhancement.Extensive qualitative and quantitative evaluations on three datasets -- CAS(ME)^2, CAS(ME)^3 and SAMM-LV -- demonstrate that our PESFormer outperforms existing techniques, achieving the best performance.

Detecting the presence of multiple incoherent sources is a fundamental and challenging task for quantum imaging, especially within sub-Rayleigh region. In this paper, the discrimination of one-versus-two point-like incoherent sources in symmetric and asymmetric scenarios is studied. We calculate the quantum lower bounds on error probabilities of making a decision after one-shot and multi-shot tests. The results are compared with the error probability of prior-based direct guess, and the minimal number of tests required to make a decision outperforming direct guess is discussed. We also show the asymptotic quantum lower bound for a large number of tests. For practical purposes, we propose a specific strategy along with decision rule of which can work without any prior knowledge. With respect to each of two scenarios, the error probability can approach the quantum lower bound in one-shot test as well as multi-shot test. In addition, the potential challenges and solutions in a realistic scenario are analyzed. Our results may contribute to real-world quantum imaging such as microscopy and astronomy.

In this work, we propose a geometric nonlinear current response induced by magnetic resonance in magnetic Weyl semimetals. This phenomenon is in analog to the quantized circular photogalvanic effect previously proposed for Weyl semimetal phases of chiral crystals. However, the nonlinear current response in our case can occur in magnetic Weyl semimetals where time-reversal symmetry, instead of inversion symmetry, is broken. The occurrence of this phenomenon relies on the special coupling between Weyl electrons and magnetic fluctuations induced by magnetic resonance. To further support our analytical solution, we perform numerical studies on a model Hamiltonian describing the Weyl semimetal phase in a topological insulator system with ferromagnetism.

Peridynamics (PD) is widely used to simulate structural failure. However, PD models are time-consuming. To improve the computational efficiency, we developed an adaptive coupling model between PD and classical continuum mechanics (PD-CCM) based on the Morphing method [1], driven by the broken bond or strength criteria. We derived the dynamic equation of the coupled models from the Lagrangian equation and then the discretized finite element formulation. An adaptive coupling strategy was introduced by determining the key position using the broken bond or strength criteria. The PD subdomain was expanded by altering the value of the Morphing function around the key position. Additionally, the PD subdomain was meshed by discrete elements (DEs) (i.e., nodes were not shared between elements), allowing the crack to propagate freely along the boundary of the DE. The remaining subdomains were meshed by continuous elements (CEs). Following the PD subdomain expansion, the CEs were converted into DEs, and new nodes were inserted. The displacement vector and mass matrix were reconfigured to ensure calculation consistency throughout the solving process. Furthermore, the relationship between the expansion radius of the PD subdomain and the speed of crack propagation was also discussed. Optical metasurfaces provide novel solutions to label-free biochemical sensing by localizing light resonantly beyond the diffraction limit, thereby selectively enhancing light-matter interactions for improved analytical performance. However, high-Q resonances in metasurfaces are usually achieved in the reflection mode, which impedes metasurface integration into compact imaging systems. Here, we demonstrate a novel metasurface platform for advanced biochemical sensing based on the physics of the bound states in the continuum (BIC) and electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT) modes, which arise when two interfering resonances from a periodic pattern of tilted elliptic holes overlap both spectrally and spatially, creating a narrow transparency window in the mid-infrared spectrum. We experimentally measure these resonant peaks observed in transmission mode (Q~734 at ~8.8 um) in free-standing silicon membranes and confirm their tunability through geometric scaling. We also demonstrate the strong coupling of the BIC-EIT modes with a thinly coated PMMA film on the metasurface, characterized by a large Rabi splitting (32 cm-1) and biosensing of protein monolayers in transmission mode. Our new photonic platform can facilitate the integration of metasurface biochemical sensors into compact and monolithic optical systems while being compatible with scalable manufacturing, thereby clearing the way for on-site biochemical sensing in everyday applications.

Automated Machine Learning (AutoML) approaches encompass traditional methods that optimize fixed pipelines for model selection and ensembling, as well as newer LLM-based frameworks that autonomously build pipelines. While LLM-based agents have shown promise in automating machine learning tasks, they often generate low-diversity and suboptimal code, even after multiple iterations. To overcome these limitations, we introduce Tree-Search Enhanced LLM Agents (SELA), an innovative agent-based system that leverages Monte Carlo Tree Search (MCTS) to optimize the AutoML process. By representing pipeline configurations as trees, our framework enables agents to conduct experiments intelligently and iteratively refine their strategies, facilitating a more effective exploration of the machine learning solution space. This novel approach allows SELA to discover optimal pathways based on experimental feedback, improving the overall quality of the solutions. In an extensive evaluation across 20 machine learning datasets, we compare the performance of traditional and agent-based AutoML methods, demonstrating that SELA achieves a win rate of 65% to 80% against each baseline across all datasets. The codebook-based analog beamforming is appealing for future terahertz (THz) communications since it can generate high-gain directional beams with low-cost phase shifters via low-complexity beam training. However, conventional beamforming codebook design based on array response vectors for narrowband communications may suffer from severe performance loss in wideband systems due to the ``beam squint" effect over frequency. To tackle this issue, we propose in this paper a new codebook design method for analog beamforming in wideband THz systems. In particular, to characterize the analog beamforming performance in wideband systems, we propose a new metric termed wideband beam gain, which is given by the minimum beamforming gain over the entire frequency band given a target angle. Based on this metric, a wideband analog beamforming codebook design problem is formulated for optimally balancing the beamforming gains in both the spatial and frequency domains, and the performance loss of conventional narrowband beamforming in wideband systems is analyzed. To solve the new wideband beamforming codebook design problem, we divide the spatial domain into orthogonal angular zones each associated with one beam, thereby decoupling the codebook design into a zone division sub-problem and a set of beamforming optimization sub-problems each for one zone. For the zone division sub-problem, we propose a bisection method to obtain the optimal boundaries for separating adjacent zones. While for each of the per-zone-based beamforming optimization sub-problems, we further propose an efficient augmented Lagrange method (ALM) to solve it. Numerical results demonstrate the performance superiority of our proposed codebook design for wideband analog beamforming to the narrowband beamforming codebook and also validate our performance analysis., Comment: 14 pages, 8 figures. Deep Reinforcement Learning (DRL) algorithms have achieved great success in solving many challenging tasks while their black-box nature hinders interpretability and real-world applicability, making it difficult for human experts to interpret and understand DRL policies. Existing works on interpretable reinforcement learning have shown promise in extracting decision tree (DT) based policies from DRL policies with most focus on the single-agent settings while prior attempts to introduce DT policies in multi-agent scenarios mainly focus on heuristic designs which do not provide any quantitative guarantees on the expected return. In this paper, we establish an upper bound on the return gap between the oracle expert policy and an optimal decision tree policy. This enables us to recast the DT extraction problem into a novel non-euclidean clustering problem over the local observation and action values space of each agent, with action values as cluster labels and the upper bound on the return gap as clustering loss. Both the algorithm and the upper bound are extended to multi-agent decentralized DT extractions by an iteratively-grow-DT procedure guided by an action-value function conditioned on the current DTs of other agents. Further, we propose the Return-Gap-Minimization Decision Tree (RGMDT) algorithm, which is a surprisingly simple design and is integrated with reinforcement learning through the utilization of a novel Regularized Information Maximization loss. Evaluations on tasks like D4RL show that RGMDT significantly outperforms heuristic DT-based baselines and can achieve nearly optimal returns under given DT complexity constraints (e.g., maximum number of DT nodes).

3D semantic occupancy prediction is an essential part of autonomous driving, focusing on capturing the geometric details of scenes. Off-road environments are rich in geometric information, therefore it is suitable for 3D semantic occupancy prediction tasks to reconstruct such scenes. However, most of researches concentrate on on-road environments, and few methods are designed for off-road 3D semantic occupancy prediction due to the lack of relevant datasets and benchmarks. In response to this gap, we introduce WildOcc, to our knowledge, the first benchmark to provide dense occupancy annotations for off-road 3D semantic occupancy prediction tasks. A ground truth generation pipeline is proposed in this paper, which employs a coarse-to-fine reconstruction to achieve a more realistic result. Moreover, we introduce a multi-modal 3D semantic occupancy prediction framework, which fuses spatio-temporal information from multi-frame images and point clouds at voxel level. In addition, a cross-modality distillation function is introduced, which transfers geometric knowledge from point clouds to image features.

The purpose of this study was to explore the interactive effect of self-efficacy and pair programming experience to the final learning results in introductory programming courses. We developed a 2x2 fractional design to explore their roles and relationships. Data was collected by distributing questionnaires to students have learnt or are learning CS367 at UW-Madison. They were asked to evaluate their self-efficacy levels and pair programming experience. After that, they needed to complete a quiz of 11 Java knowledge quiz indicating their learning results. We present results from 36 participants which show that students with high self-efficacy levels tended to earn a higher score in the Java knowledge quiz. However, pair programming experience shows no significant effects on learning results.Our finding suggests that high self-efficacy levels have a positive impact on students' performance in introductory programming courses.

Topological defects are discontinuities of a system protected by global properties, with wide applications in mathematics and physics. While previous experimental studies mostly focused on their classical properties, it has been predicted that topological defects can exhibit quantum superposition. Despite the fundamental interest and potential applications in understanding symmetry-breaking dynamics of quantum phase transitions, its experimental realization still remains a challenge. Here, we report the observation of quantum superposition of topological defects in a trapped-ion quantum simulator. By engineering long-range spin-spin interactions, we observe a spin kink splitting into a superposition of kinks at different positions, creating a ``Schrodinger kink'' that manifests non-locality and quantum interference. Furthermore, by preparing superposition states of neighboring kinks with different phases, we observe the propagation of the wave packet in different directions, thus unambiguously verifying the quantum coherence in the superposition states. Reward models have been increasingly critical for improving the reasoning capability of LLMs. Existing research has shown that a well-trained reward model can substantially improve model performances at inference time via search. However, the potential of reward models during RL training time still remains largely under-explored. It is currently unclear whether these reward models can provide additional training signals to enhance the reasoning capabilities of LLMs in RL training that uses sparse success rewards, which verify the correctness of solutions. In this work, we evaluate popular reward models for RL training, including the Outcome-supervised Reward Model (ORM) and the Process-supervised Reward Model (PRM), and train a collection of LLMs for math problems using RL by combining these learned rewards with success rewards. Surprisingly, even though these learned reward models have strong inference-time performances, they may NOT help or even hurt RL training, producing worse performances than LLMs trained with the success reward only. Our analysis reveals that an LLM can receive high rewards from some of these reward models by repeating correct but unnecessary reasoning steps, leading to a severe reward hacking issue. Therefore, we introduce two novel reward refinement techniques, including Clipping and Delta. The key idea is to ensure the accumulative reward of any reasoning trajectory is upper-bounded to keep a learned reward model effective without being exploited. We evaluate our techniques with multiple reward models over a set of 1.5B and 7B LLMs on MATH and GSM8K benchmarks and demonstrate that with a carefully designed reward function, RL training without any additional supervised tuning can improve all the evaluated LLMs, including the state-of-the-art 7B LLM Qwen2.5-Math-7B-Instruct on MATH and GSM8K benchmarks.

This paper introduces a novel method for reconstructing cone beam computed tomography (CBCT) images for arbitrary orbits using a differentiable shift-variant filtered backprojection (FBP) neural network. Traditional CBCT reconstruction methods for arbitrary orbits, like iterative reconstruction algorithms, are computationally expensive and memory-intensive. The proposed method addresses these challenges by employing a shift-variant FBP algorithm optimized for arbitrary trajectories through a deep learning approach that adapts to a specific orbit geometry. This approach overcomes the limitations of existing techniques by integrating known operators into the learning model, minimizing the number of parameters, and improving the interpretability of the model. The proposed method is a significant advancement in interventional medical imaging, particularly for robotic C-arm CT systems, enabling faster and more accurate CBCT reconstructions with customized orbits. Especially this method can also be used for the analytical reconstruction of non-continuous orbits like circular plus arc. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method significantly accelerates the reconstruction process compared to conventional iterative algorithms. It achieves comparable or superior image quality, as evidenced by metrics such as the mean squared error (MSE), the peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR), and the structural similarity index measure (SSIM). The validation experiments show that the method can handle data from different trajectories, demonstrating its flexibility and robustness across different scan geometries. Our method demonstrates a significant improvement, particularly for the sinusoidal trajectory, achieving a 38.6% reduction in MSE, a 7.7% increase in PSNR, and a 5.0% improvement in SSIM. Furthermore, the computation time for reconstruction was reduced by more than 97%.

Practitioners have consistently observed three puzzling phenomena in transformer-based large language models (LLMs): attention sinks, value-state drains, and residual-state peaks, collectively referred to as extreme-token phenomena. These phenomena are characterized by certain so-called "sink tokens" receiving disproportionately high attention weights, exhibiting significantly smaller value states, and having much larger residual-state norms than those of other tokens. These extreme tokens give rise to various challenges in LLM inference, quantization, and interpretability. We elucidate the mechanisms behind extreme-token phenomena. First, we show that these phenomena arise in very simple architectures -- transformers with one to three layers -- trained on a toy model, the Bigram-Backcopy (BB) task. In this setting, we identify an active-dormant mechanism, where attention heads become sinks for specific input domains while remaining non-sinks for others. Our theoretical analysis of the training dynamics reveals that these phenomena are driven by a mutual reinforcement mechanism. Building on these insights, we propose strategies to mitigate extreme-token phenomena during pretraining, including replacing softmax with ReLU and Adam with SGD. Next, we extend our analysis to pretrained LLMs, including Llama and OLMo, showing that many attention heads exhibit a similar active-dormant mechanism as in the BB task, and that the mutual reinforcement mechanism also governs the emergence of extreme-token phenomena during LLM pretraining. Our results reveal that many of the static and dynamic properties of extreme-token phenomena predicted by the BB task align with observations in pretrained LLMs.
