Appendix vermiformis is found in various anatomical localizations. Localization of the appendix vermiformis has been suggested to affect the clinical findings and outcomes of acute appendicitis. Aimed at investigating the effect of retrocecal localization of appendix vermiformis on the prognosis of acute appendicitis today. This study was started in August 2018 and finished in August 2021. Adult patients of both sexes who were operated in general surgery clinic with a pre-diagnosis of acute appendicitis were included in the study. Anatomic localization of appendix vermiformis were divided into two parts as retrocecal localizations and non-retrocecal localizations. The forms of appendicitis, postoperative complications, and length of hospitalization obtained from retrocecal and non-retrocecal localizations were compared and evaluated. A total of 776 patients were included in the study. Retrocecal localization was found in 15%, and non-retrocecal in 84.9% of the patients. The rate of acute appendicitis was 65.8% in retrocecal localization, 83.1% in non-retrocecal localization, perforated appendicitis at 31.6% in retrocecal localization and 11.2% in non-retrocecal localization. The perforated appendicitis rate was significantly higher in retrocecal localizations (p=.0001). Although postoperative complications were 5.1% in retrocecal appendicitis and 2.4% in non-retrocecal appendicitis, there was no significant difference between them in terms of postoperative complications (p=.105). The mean length of hospital stay was 2.4 days for appendicitis with retrocecal localization and 1.7 days for non-retrocecal localizations. The mean length of hospital stay was also significantly higher in retrocecal localizations (p=.0001). In conclusion, both perforated appendicitis rates and the mean length of hospital stay were higher in appendicitis with retrocecal localization. Therefore, appendicitis with retrocecal localization still negatively affects the prognosis of acute appendicitis today. [Med-Science 2022; 11(4.000): 1516-20]

This study has been planned to show disabled peoples problems in getting oral and dental health services and their ethical dilemmas they experienced after the first Covid-19 case announced on 11 March 2020 in Turkey and World Health Organisation declared this epidemic as pandemic. Study datas were obtained from a public oral and dental health center in Malatya, Turkey with ethics committee approval and institution permit. When the datas have been analyzed, it has been seen that disabled citizens couldn't get oral and dental health treatments and general anesthesia due to Covid-19 pandemic in 2021. It can be said that Covid-19 pandemic is a problematic period for disabled individuals for their oral and dental health services. [Med-Science 2022; 11(4.000): 1553-6]

Although overexpression and hyperactivity of protein kinases are causative for a wide range of human cancers, protein kinase inhibitors currently approved as cancer drugs address only a limited number of these enzymes. To identify new chemotypes addressing alternative protein kinases, the basic structure of a known PLK1/VEGF-R2 inhibitor class was formally dissected and reassembled. The resulting 7-(2-anilinopyrimidin-4-yl)-1-benzazepin-2-ones were synthesized and proved to be dual inhibitors of Aurora A kinase and VEGF receptor kinases. Crystal structures of two representatives of the new chemotype in complex with Aurora A showed the ligand orientation in the ATP binding pocket and provided the basis for rational structural modifications. Congeners with attached sulfamide substituents retained Aurora A inhibitory activity. In vitro screening of two members of the new kinase inhibitor family against the cancer cell line panel of the National Cancer Institute (NCI) showed antiproliferative activity in the single-digit micromolar concentration range in the majority of the cell lines.

Dural arteriovenous fistulas (DAVF) are frequent causes of pulsatile tinnitus. Color Doppler sonography may play a useful, complementary role to CTA/MRA and digital subtraction angiography (DSA) in the assessment of these anomalies’ characteristics, such as an ipsilateral increased flow volume and a low resistive index. In this article, we report a case of DAVF first detected with Color Doppler sonography that displayed an uncharacteristic venous drainage pattern.

The aim of this study is to determine the problems faced by individuals living with cancer (ILCs) in accessing health services during the COVID-19 pandemic in Turkey. This qualitative study’s sample consisted of 18 volunteer interviewees from 10 cancer-related patient associations in Turkey. Research data were collected by semi-structured interview method. Data collection and analysis were carried out simultaneously. In the sessions where all researchers participated together, the data were coded with a common view, and main and sub-themes were determined. In the analysis of the data the inductive thematic analysis method was applied. Information was gathered under two main themes: compliance with the measures taken and access to health services. Lack of information about nutrition, physical activity, psychological problems, caused by the lockdown and social distance measures taken within the scope of the pandemic should be accepted as problems within the scope of the right of individuals to access health, and additional programs should be prepared to minimize these. Cancer types should be considered in delaying diagnosis, treatment, and controls related to cancer, so that patients are not harmed at least or at all. It is important to ensure that patients do not hesitate to attend diagnosis, treatment, and controls with the anxiety of being infected with COVID-19, both in transportation to health facilities and in terms of preventing transmission in health facilities. © 2022, Universidad de Chile - Centro Interdisciplinario de Estudios en Bioetica. Portland cement fabrication is a significant factor that increases the amount of carbon dioxide released into nature. For this reason, it is very important to use natural and waste materials with pozzolanic properties instead of portland cement. In this article, the usability of diatomite rock, a natural pozzolanic material that can be substituted with portland cement, in the manufacture of self-compacting mortar was studied. In the experimental study, prismatic specimens with dimensions of 40 × 40 × 160 mm were used to examine the impact of ground diatomite on the early age mechanical properties of self-compacting mortar; it was produced by replacing 0%, 5%, 10%, 15%, 20% of diatomite with portland cement, respectively. The slump-flow test to obtain self-compacting mortar was conducted according to the European Federation of Specialized Construction Chemicals and Concrete Systems guidance. Specimens prepared using 0%, 5%, 10%, 15% and 20% diatomite were cured in water at 23±2 ̊C temperature for 3 days. 3-day (early age) flexural and compressive strength worths were gained for the samples whose curing period was completed. As a result of this experimental study, it was specified that the highest strengths were in the series containing 5% diatomite, exceeding the reference samples. Additionally, it has been determined that mechanical strength decreases when the diatomite ratio in mixtures is more than 5%.

New onset atrial fibrillation (NOAF) in the case of acute myocardial infarction appears to be associated with inflammation. However, its influence alongside other risk factors is currently unknown. In this study, the effect of inflammation in predicting NOAF independent of left atrial volume index (LAVi) was investigated with a new marker, the C-reactive protein/Albumin ratio (CAR). We included 945 ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients who underwent pPCI. Two groups were defined according to the presence of NOAF and the groups were compared for demographic, clinical and angiographic findings. Predictors of the NOAF were assessed by multivariable regression analysis. Fifty-five (5.8%) patients had NOAF after the procedures. CAR was substantially higher in patients with NOAF (5.9 [4.9] vs 0.46 [1] p4.2 were 64% and 81% (AUC: 0.86) respectively. In subgroup analysis, OR of CAR in LAVi ≥26.7 ml/m² was 19.5 and 22.1 in LAVi

Sterically hindered N-(o-aryl)-rhodanines (a) (N-(o-aryl)-2-thioxo-4-thiazolidinones) have been synthesized and the N-(o-tolyl) and N-(o-chlorophenyl) derivatives have been converted to their dioxo analogs (b) (N-(o-aryl)-2,4-thiazolidine- diones). The chirality of the compounds in their conformational ground states was proved by detection of the diastereotopic protons or methyl groups at C-5 of the heteroring using 1H and 13C NMR spectroscopy. In the presence of the optically active auxiliary (S)-(+)-1-(9-anthryl)-2,2,2-trifluoroethanol the enantiomers of the racemic mixtures formed diastereomeric association complexes via H-bonding.Key words: chirality, chiral auxiliary, rotational isomerism, N-(o-aryl)-rhodanines, N-(o-aryl)-2,4-thiazolidinediones, 1H and 13C NMR.

PubMedID: 8964264 To investigate the involvement of the visceral afferent nerves in diabetes mellitus, we enrolled 46 male patients in a study, examining the cerebral potentials evoked by stimulation of the vesico-urethral junction (VUJ CEP) and the pudendal (penile CEP) and posterior tibial nerves (tibial CEP). The age range was 23-67 (mean 45.8) years. The epithelial surface of the vesico-urethral junction was stimulated bipolarly with an electrode attached to a specially produced Foley catheter. Cerebral responses were recorded bipolarly at vertex. VUJ CEPs were absent (27 patients) or protracted and/or of low amplitude (4 patients) (total 31 patients; 67.8%). Penile CEP and/or tibial CEP could be obtained in all cases; however, protracted PI peak latencies were detected in 15 (32.8%). The abnormalities of VUJ CEP did not correlate with the presence of peripheral neuropathy, while the abnormalities of penile CEP and/or tibial CEP invariably coincided with the presence of peripheral neuropathy. Although neither age nor the duration of diabetes correlated with abnormal CEPs as determined by any of the tests, insulin dependence correlated with abnormal penile CEP and to a lesser extent with VUJ CEP. We conclude that VUJ CEP is informative in evaluating the physiological condition of visceral afferents, and can be used in diagnosis of the early involvement of visceral afferents in diabetes mellitus. © 1996 Elsevier Science Ireland Ltd. Primary intraventricular hemorrhage (PIVH), bleeding in the ventricular system without a recognizable parenchymal component, is a rare neurological disorder. The purpose of this study was to identify clinical features, risk factors, etiology and outcome of patients with PIVH.We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data, complementary examinations, outcome and computed tomography (CT) IVH score of 24 patients in our hospital from 2004 to 2008. We identified 24 patients with the inclusion criteria of non-traumatic PIVH. Their mean age was 60.6+/-17.4 years (range 38-79). Fourteen patients were male and 10 were female. The major symptoms included headache (n=24), loss of consciousness (n=6), confusion and disorientation (n=14), nausea/vomiting (n=10). Angiography revealed vascular malformations in five patients (21%). Other possible causative factors were hypertension in 12 patients (50%) and clotting disorder in one. The aetiology remained unknown in six patients. Most PIVH patients had associated hydrocephalus (58%) and 37% of the patients required ventricular drainage. In-hospital mortality was high (41%) and a FOUR scoreor=10, GCSor=8 and early hydrocephalus were independent predictors of mortality.Hypertension is the most common associated risk factor for PIVH followed by vascular malformation. Spontaneous resorption and rebleeding may be seen. The neurological status of the patients and an early developing hydrocephalus are the most important risk factors.

In this study gill-net selectivity for Alburnus chalcoides inhabiting the Almus Dam Lake was estimated. Experimental gill-net fishing was conducted using gill-net with 15 mm and 20 mm mesh-size, during October 2002 and September 2003. A total of 254 and 198 specimens of A. chalcoides were caught by gill-net with 15 mm and 198 with the 20 mm mesh-size, respectively. The total length of the fish ranged from 10.5 cm to 21.5 cm for 15 mm mesh-size and 13.6 cm to 25.6 cm for 20 mm mesh-size. Mean total lengths were calculated as 14.34 ± 1.52 cm and 17.85 ± 1.97 cm for 15 mm and 20 mm mesh-size, respectively. Selectivity analysis indicated an optimum length (100% probability of retention) of 14.77 cm for the 15 mm mesh size and 19.69 cm for the 20 mm mesh size gill-nets. Selectivity Factor was calculated as 0.9846. The vast majority (81%) of fish caught by 15 mm mesh size and 20 mm mesh size were mature. Therefore, both the 15 mm and 20 mm mesh size were suitable for the sustainable fisheries of A. chalcoides in the Almus Dam Lake.

In this study, relationship between strength (compressive strength, tensile strength) and elastic modulus of self-consolidating concrete (SCC) that included different types and dosages of mineral admixtures (fly ash (FA) and silica fume (SF)) as replacement of Portland cement was investigated. In order to evaluate the workability of the mixtures, slump-flow, t500, L-box and sieve segregation tests were carried out. In the following day of casting, the specimens were de-moulded and located in 20±2 ºC water and cured for 28 days. Compressive strength, splitting tensile strength and elastic modulus tests were performed using a total of 3 specimens for each concrete property. Compressive strength–tensile strength and compressive strength-elastic modulus formulas obtained from regression analysis using a numerous data were compared with the equations obtained in the previous studies. Consequently, it was found that compressive strength–tensile strength and compressive strength-elastic modulus formulas obtained from this study can be used correctly to estimate the tensile strength and the elastic modulus of self-consolidating concrete.

Eye movements let us fixate on and follow a moving visual target. These movements are performed by the ocular motor system that is divided according to anatomic location into infranuclear, nuclear, internuclear, and supranuclear components. It is important to distinguish supranuclear and internuclear from nuclear and infranuclear disturbances. Internuclear ophthalmoplegia is due to a lesion of the medial longitudinal fasciculus, caused by multiple sclerosis in younger patients, particularly when the ophthalmoplegia is bilateral, and usually of vascular origin in the elderly. Supranuclear disorders of eye movements are characterized by gaze palsies, tonic gaze deviation, saccadic and smooth pursuit disorders, vergence abnormalities, nystagmus, and ocular oscillations. Supranuclear disorders result from lesions above the level of the ocular motor nerve nuclei, and they account for almost 10% of all patients with disorders of eye movements. If oculocephalic maneuvers move the eyes appropriately, the lesion causing the gaze palsy is supranuc- lear; if oculocephalic maneuvers do not move the eyes, the lesion may be internuclear, nuclear, or infranuclear

Dwarf hygro (Hygrophila polysperma) is an ornamental aquatic plant that changes its leaf colours to pinkish in high light. It is listed as a medicinal plant in medicinal plant lists of Indian states of West Bengal and Karnataka. It is also used as a screening tool for toxicities and a bioindicator to detect and control algae. The study reported in vitro adventitious shoot regeneration from leaf explants cultured on MS medium containing 0.10–1.60 mg/L Kin/TDZ with or without 0.10 mg/L IBA and 500 mg/L Amoklavin to eradicate endogenic bacterial contamination. Direct adventitious shoot regeneration started within one week from both culture mediums followed by late callus induction which was more prominent on TDZ containing media compared to Kin containing media. Addition of 0.10 mg/L IBA with both Kin and TDZ increased shoot regeneration frequency, mean number of shoots per explant, and mean shoot length. Maximum number of 16.33 and 20.55 shoots per explant was obtained on MS medium containing 0.80+0.10 mg/L Kin-IBA and 0.10+0.10 mg/L TDZ-IBA, respectively. Regenerated shoots were rooted on MS medium containing 0.20–1.00 mg/L IBA followed by successfull acclimatization in aquariums. Regenerated plantlets were also tested in jars containing distilled water that showed the pH 6–9 for the best plant growth and development.
