The aim of this study is to reveal high school teachers’ self-efficacy beliefs with an explanatory sequential design, which is one of the mixed method research designs. Quantitative data of the research were analysed by package program, and qualitative data were analysed by content analysis method. Three hundred and twenty-nine high school teachers participated in the quantitative part of the research and 15 high school teachers participated in the qualitative part of the study. In the quantitative section of the study, the “Teacher Self-Efficacy Belief Scale” was used and in the qualitative dimension an interview form consisting of four research questions were asked. As a result of the research, it was revealed that the factors affecting the academic self-efficacy beliefs of the participants were scientific research, postgraduate education, in-service training, following up-to-date resources, individual development and communication; the factors affecting professional self-efficacy beliefs were the use of different teaching principles and methods, in-service training, personal development, graduate education, communication, professional sharing and experience; the factors affecting social self-efficacy beliefs were social activities, school activities, communication, harmony and sharing; and the factors affecting intellectual self-efficacy beliefs were following periodicals, following the agenda, scientific-philosophical reading, activities and organisations, personal development and travel.

Central anticholinergic syndrome (CAS) presents with central and/or peripheral neurological symptoms after exposure to anticholinergic medication. Pain management is a challenge for patients who have CAS and concurrent cancer-related pain. We present a patient who became lethargic and unresponsive after receiving butorphanol, with persistent symptoms despite administration of an opioid antagonist. This case report is the first to suggest a causal relationship between opioids and CAS without the presence of confounding anticholinergic medications. CAS should be considered for patients who develop neurological symptoms after opioid exposure and have an incomplete response to an opioid antagonist. Objective: The aim of this study was to evaluate the ovarian serous surface epithelial tumors in terms of FGFR1 expression and to evaluate the differences in expression of serous cystadenomas, borderline serous tumor/atypical proliferative serous tumors, low-grade and high-grade serous carcinomas. Methods: A hundred patients diagnosed with serous cystadenomas, borderline serous tumor/atypical proliferative serous tumors (BST), low-grade (LGSOC) and high-grade serous ovarian carcinomas (HGSOC) between 2010-2020 in our pathology laboratory were included in the study. In these cases, real-time PCR and immunohistochemistry were performed on sections from paraffin blocks. Results: In our study, it was determined that FGFR1 gene expression was statistically significantly increased in HGSOC cases compared to the BST/ LGSOC group and the SC group. Although there was a difference between the BST/ LGSOC group and the SC group, no statistical significance was found. Conclusion: FGFR1 expression was significantly increased in HGSOC cases. This finding has led to the conclusion that angiogenesis inhibition by FGFR inhibition may be a treatment option in HGSOC cases.

Glutathione-related enzymes belong to the protection mechanism of the cells against harmful oxidative damage and chemicals. Glutathione S-transferase (GST) is frequently over-expressed in various cancer cells and is involved in drug resistance. Chlorophyllin is an antioxidant molecule interfering with the GST P1-1 activity. The purpose of this study is to evaluate the short- and long-term protective effects of chlorophyllin as an antioxidant molecule on DNA damage, antioxidant enzyme activities, trace elements, and minerals in chemically induced breast cancer model in vivo. In our study, N-methyl-N-nitrosourea (MNU) was used for inducing breast carcinogenesis in female Sprague-Dawley rats. A total of 36 rats were divided into groups as short term and long term. Each group was divided into four sub-groups as control group received physiological saline solution (n = 3), Chl group (n = 5) received chlorophyllin, MNU group (n = 5) was administered MNU, and Chl + MNU group (n = 5) was treated with both chlorophyllin and MNU. Results illustrated that chlorophyllin had a significant anti-genotoxic effect in the short term, and glutathione-related enzyme activities were protected by chlorophyllin treatment in MNU-induced breast cancer model. Additionally, MNU administration impaired mineral and trace element levels including Na, Mg, K, Fe, Zn, and Co in the liver, kidney, spleen, heart, and tumor tissues; however, adverse effects of MNU were recovered upon chlorophyllin treatment in the indicated tissues of the rats. In conclusion, chlorophyllin can be used as an antioxidant molecule to ameliorate adverse effects of MNU by enhancing antioxidant enzyme activities and regulating trace element and mineral balance in several organs and tumor tissue in the breast cancer model.

Background Xanthogranulomatous inflammation is characterized histologically by a collection of lipid-laden macrophages admixed with lymphocytes, plasma cells, neutrophils, and often multinucleated giant cells with or without cholesterol clefts. Aim To review the medical literature on xanthogranulomatous appendicitis (XGA). Methods We present a patient with XGA and review published articles on XGA accessed via the PubMed, MEDLINE, Google Scholar, and Google databases. Keywords used were "appendix vermiformis," "appendectomy," "acute appendicitis," and "XGA." The search included articles published before May 2020, and the publication language was not restricted. The search included letters to the editor, case reports, review articles, original articles, and meeting presentations. Articles or abstracts containing adequate information about age, sex, clinical presentation, white blood cells, initial diagnosis, surgical approach, histopathological and immunohistochemical features of appendectomy specimens were included in the study. Results A total of 29 articles involving 38 patients with XGA, were retrospectively analyzed. Twenty (52.6%) of the 38 patients, aged 3 to 78 years (median: 34; IQR: 31) were female, and the remaining 18 (47.4%) were male. Twenty-five patients were diagnosed with acute appendicitis, ruptured appendicitis, or subacute appendicitis, and the remaining 13 patients underwent surgery for tumoral lesions of the ileocecal region. Twenty-two of the patients underwent urgent or semi-urgent surgery, and the remaining 16 patients underwent interval appendectomy. Conclusion Xanthogranulomatous inflammation rarely affects the appendix vermiformis. It is associated with significant diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas due to its variable presentation. It is often associated with interval appendectomies, and a significant number of patients require bowel resection due to the common presentation of a tumoral lesion. XGA is usually identified retrospectively on surgical pathology and has no unique features in preoperative diagnostic studies.

Objectives The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and histopathological features of 42 patients with unusual infectious agents detected in their appendectomy specimens. Material and methods Between January 1999 and November 2018, 2.754 patients underwent emergency or incidental appendectomy in our clinic, and their pathology reports were retrospectively reviewed. Unusual infectious agents or eosinophilic infiltration of the appendix were reported in the initial pathological examinations of 57 patients. The pathological slides of these patients were re-examined by histopathologists. The examinations revealed that 15 of these patients had no microscopic findings suggestive of parasitic infections. The remaining 42 patients with unusual appendiceal infectious agents were included into the study. Results A total of 42 patients (25 females and 17 males) aged 18 to 75 years were included into this study. While 32 of these patients (76%) underwent emergency appendectomy with a presumed diagnosis of acute appendicitis (AAp), the remaining 10 patients underwent incidental appendectomy for various reasons. Twenty-two patients (52.4%) had histopathological changes consistent with AAp while 20 patients had no evidence of AAp. Histopathological examination revealed infection with Enterobius vermicularis in 38 of the patients, Taenia species in 2, and Ascaris lumbricoides and Actinomyces species in 1 patient each. A total of 24 patients were treated for infections with mebendazole (n = 20), albendazole (n =1), niclosamide (n = 2), and amoxicillin (n = 1). Conclusion Unusual infectious agents should be considered as factors potentially triggering AAp, especially in patients living in endemic areas. The appendiceal stump should be inspected for parasite residues.

Background/aims To determine the histopathological features of incidental appendectomy specimens obtained from living liver donors (LLDs) Materials and Methods: Between September 2005 and November 2018, 1910 LLDs underwent living donor hepatectomy at our institute. Incidental appendectomy together with living donor hepatectomy (LDH) was performed in 170 LLDs. The decision for incidental appendectomy was made by experienced gastrointestinal surgeons. Histopathological features of the appendectomy specimens were analyzed by two pathologists, and the following parameters were retrospectively evaluated: age, sex, appendix length (mm), appendix width (mm), presence of appendicitis, and unusual histopathological findings. Results Histopathological findings from 97 male and 73 female LLDs aged between 18 and 64 (median: 30) years were retrospectively examined. The length of the appendix vermiformis ranged from 25 to 120 (median: 70) mm, whereas its width ranged from 4 to 13 (median: 6) mm. The following histopathological findings were observed: normal appendix vermiformis (n=137), fibrous obliteration (n=13), acute appendicitis (n=5), enterobius vermicularis (n=4), lymphoid hyperplasia (n=4), low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasm (n=2), mucinous cystadenoma (n=1), grade 1 neuroendocrine tumor (n=1), hyperplastic polyp (n=1), enterobius vermicularis with fibrous obliteration (n=1), and acute appendicitis with eosinophilic infiltration (n=1). Conclusion This study showed that a careful inspection of the abdominal cavity was useful, and appendectomy should be performed when required. In addition, even if the macroscopic appearance of the appendectomy specimens is normal, histopathological evaluations facilitate an early diagnosis of numerous unusual appendiceal diseases.

The study was conducted to investigate the success and attitudes of the secondary school 7th grade students towards Turkish language lesson in terms of various variables. The study is a descriptive study and based on data collection. In this study, a 27-item attitude scale and a personal information protocol consisting of 5 questions were used. In addition, a pre-prepared multiple-choice Turkish course achievement test consisting of a total of 30 questions was applied. Students’ attitudes towards Turkish language lesson were measured and compared with success and other variables. The attitude scale, personal information protocol and achievement test were applied to 48 students in total. The population of the study consists of the students studying in Sarıkamış county of Kars province. The sample of the study consists of 7th grade students studying in Halit Paşa Secondary School and Şehit Taner Baran Regional Boarding Secondary School in Sarıkamış county of Kars province. The obtained data was interpreted by conducting t test, variance analysis with SPSS 20 package program. As a result of the findings, it was determined that there was a difference in the attitudes of the students in terms of gender and the number of the siblings. It was found out that the attitudes of the students towards Turkish language lesson did not differentiate in terms of mother educational background and interest in the lesson.

Organo-lead trihalide perovskites (OLTPs) form a highly interesting class of semiconductors, which might play an important role in future photovoltaics and optoelectronics. Particularly, formamidinium lead triiodide – methylammonium lead tribromide mixed perovskite (FAPbI3)0.9(MAPbBr3)0.1 is one of the most important representatives of this material class. In order to estimate the full optoelectronic potential of this perovskite system and thus to foster its future technological use, it is essential to investigate high-quality single crystals with the lowest structural as well as chemical defect density and with a stoichiometry relevant for their thin-film counterparts. However, the liquid growth of perovskite crystals without seed crystals is usually challenging and becomes even more demanding in the case of mixed cation–mixed halide single crystals, making it difficult to access their inherent properties. Here, we introduce a new efficient seed crystal free re-fill crystallization method (RFCM) based on inverse temperature crystallization (ITC) to grow large-sized single crystals. We performed qualitative and quantitative analyses, which confirmed the targeted elemental composition and the exact stoichiometry of the grown crystals. By means of polychromatic and monochromatic X-ray diffraction (XRD), we have demonstrated the high single crystal quality of the RFCM crystals, superior to crystals obtained by the seed crystal method. Steady-state photoluminescence (PL), absorption and temperature-dependent electrical measurements completed the investigation and enabled the determination of the optical band gap, relative permittivity and electrical conductivity of the grown single crystals. The conductivity clearly exhibits an ionic contribution and is therefore relevant for photovoltaic and optoelectronic implementation of this perovskite system.

Herein, we demonstrate a novel coating approach to fabricate CsPbBr3 perovskite nanoplatelet film with heat-free process via electrospraying from precursor solution. A detailed study is carried out to determine the effect of various parameters such as ligand concentration, electric field, flow rate, etc. on the optical properties. By controlling the volume ratios of the oleylamine (OAm) and oleic acid (OA), the coalescing and thickness of the resulting nanoplatelets can be readily tuned that results in control over emission in the range of 100 nm without any antisolvent crystallization or heating processes. The varying electrical field and flow rate was found as inefficient on the emission characteristics of the films. In addition, the crystal films were obtained under ambient conditions on the ITO coated glass surfaces as in the desired pattern. Nanophotonics based on high refractive index dielectrics relies on appreciable contrast between the indices of designed nanostructures and their immediate surrounding, which can be achieved by the growth of thin films on low-index substrates. Here we propose the use of high index amorphous gallium phosphide (a-GaP), fabricated by radio-frequency sputter deposition, on top of a low refractive index glass substrate and thoroughly examine its nanophotonic properties. Spectral ellipsometry of the amorphous material demonstrates the optical properties to be considerably close to crystalline gallium phosphide (c-GaP), with low-loss transparency for wavelengths longer than 650 nm. When nanostructured into nanopatches, the second harmonic (SH) response of an individual a-GaP patch is characterized to be more than two orders of magnitude larger than the as-deposited unstructured film, with an anapole-like resonant behavior. Numerical simulations are in good agreement with the experimental results over a large spectral and geometrical range. Furthermore, by studying individual a-GaP nanopatches through non-degenerate pump-probe spectroscopy with sub-10 fs pulses, we find a more than 5% ultrafast modulation of the reflectivity that is accompanied by a slower decaying free carrier contribution, caused by absorption. Our investigations reveal a potential for a-GaP as an adequate inexpensive and CMOS-compatible material for nonlinear nanophotonic applications as well as for photocatalysis. Fil: Tilmann, Benjamin. The prevalence of non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) continues to increase dramatically, and there is no approved medication for its treatment. Recently, we predicted the underlying molecular mechanisms involved in the progression of NAFLD using network analysis and identified metabolic cofactors that might be beneficial as supplements to decrease human liver fat. Here, we first assessed the tolerability of the combined metabolic cofactors including l-serine, N-acetyl-l-cysteine (NAC), nicotinamide riboside (NR), and l-carnitine by performing a 7-day rat toxicology study. Second, we performed a human calibration study by supplementing combined metabolic cofactors and a control study to study the kinetics of these metabolites in the plasma of healthy subjects with and without supplementation. We measured clinical parameters and observed no immediate side effects. Next, we generated plasma metabolomics and inflammatory protein markers data to reveal the acute changes associated with the supplementation of the metabolic cofactors. We also integrated metabolomics data using personalized genome-scale metabolic modeling and observed that such supplementation significantly affects the global human lipid, amino acid, and antioxidant metabolism. Finally, we predicted blood concentrations of these compounds during daily long-term supplementation by generating an ordinary differential equation model and liver concentrations of serine by generating a pharmacokinetic model and finally adjusted the doses of individual metabolic cofactors for future human clinical trials.

It has brought to the attention of the Editorial Office of Contemporary Educational Technology that the retracted article lacked several references which were included in in-text citations. Further communications revealed that the intensity and diversity of errors within the article were immense. The extent of these errors in article were beyond correction by an erratum and enough to raise significant questions about the credibility of the foundations of the article. Hence, due to apparent violation of ethical practices, above mentioned article is retracted by the editor of Contemporary Educational Technology. We apologize to our readers that this case was not detected during pre-publication.

Novel stable ultra-thin phases of europium oxide are investigated by means of state-of-the-art first principles calculations. Total energy calculations show that single layers of EuO2 and Eu(OH)2 can be stabilized in an octahedrally coordinated (1T) atomic structure. However, phonon calculations reveal that although both structures are energetically feasible, only the 1T-EuO2 phase has dynamical stability. The phonon spectrum of 1T-EuO2 displays three Raman active modes; a non-degenerate out-of-plane A 1 g mode at 353.5 cm - 1 and two doubly-degenerate in-plane E g modes at 304.3 cm - 1 . Furthermore, magnetic ground state and electronic band dispersion calculations show that the single layer EuO2 is a metal with net magnetic moment of 5 μ B per unitcell resulting in a half-metallic ferrimagnetic behavior. Moreover, robustness of the half-metallic ferrimagnetic characteristics of EuO2 is confirmed by the application of electric field and charging. Single layer 1T-EuO2, with its stable ultra-thin structure and half-metallic ferrimagnetic feature, is a promising novel material for nanoscale electronic and spintronic applications.

In this study, the effect of Mn doping on the structural and optical properties of cesium lead halide perovskite crystals are investigated from both experimental and theoretical points of view. It is found that adding MnCl2 during the synthesis not only leads to a Mn-driven structural phase transition from Cs4PbBr6 to CsPbCl3 but also triggers the Br- to Cl- halide exchange. On the other hand, it is observed that, under UV illumination, the color of Mn-doped crystals changes from orange to blue in approximately 195 h. While the intensity of Mn-originated photoluminescence emission exponentially decays in time, the intensity of CsPbCI3-originated emission remains unchanged. In addition, diffusive motion of Mn ions results in both a growing population of MnO2 at the surface and transition of the host into a cesium-rich Cs4PbCl6 phase.

The use of Augmented Reality Technologies, which has been developed in order to enrich the environment of education and training and provide permanent learning, has been increasing day by day. In this sense, it is important to analyze the use of augmented applications in education and training environments. In this study, We have aimed to determine students' academic success levels and their satisfactions through the use of augmented applications in Ottoman Turkish reading which students have difficulties learning. For this purpose, an experimental study has been conducted with 60 students, 30 from experimental and 30 from control group, studying in the department of Turkish studies in the faculty of Education Faculty of Agri Ibrahim Cecen University. The experimental and control groups have been chosen at random. The study has lasted totally 4 weeks- 1 weeks as pilot 3 weeks as application. The academic success test, that has been prepared to assess students' academic success, prepared by experts and covered 7 weeks, has been applied as the pre-test in the beginning and final test at the end of the process. Additionally, a semi structured interview has been carried out with randomly chosen students from the experimental group. The views of students about the use of augmented reality in Ottoman Turkish readings have been taken into consideration and the level of their satisfaction has been determined. After analysis of the obtained data, it has been understood that there is a meaningful difference between the average academic success grades of the experimental and control groups. The analysis of the findings, obtained by the semi-structured interview, are still continuing. According to the first findings, it has been observed that the use of augmented reality in education and training environment has positive contributions to student success and satisfaction.

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is one of the leading causes of cancer-related death primarily due to the lack of effective targeted therapies. Despite the distinct morphological and phenotypic patterns of HCC, treatment strategies are restricted to relatively homogeneous therapies, including multitargeted tyrosine kinase inhibitors and immune checkpoint inhibitors. Therefore, more effective therapy options are needed to target dysregulated metabolic and molecular pathways in HCC. Integrative genomic profiling of HCC patients provides insight into the most frequently mutated genes and molecular targets, including telomerase reverse transcriptase, the TP53 gene, and the Wnt/β-catenin signaling pathway oncogene (CTNNB1). Moreover, emerging techniques, such as genome-scale metabolic models may elucidate the underlying cancer-specific metabolism, which allows for the discovery of potential drug targets and identification of biomarkers. De novo lipogenesis has been revealed as consistently upregulated since it is required for cell proliferation in all HCC patients. The metabolic network-driven stratification of HCC patients in terms of redox responses, utilization of metabolites, and subtype-specific pathways may have clinical implications to drive the development of personalized medicine. In this review, the current and emerging therapeutic targets in light of molecular approaches and metabolic network-based strategies are summarized, prompting effective treatment of HCC patients.

The Turkish history has a very rich content in literary context as well as political and administrative achievements. The Turkish language, which dates back to B.C., has become one of the great languages that continues its existence until modern day, leaving priceless reference guide behind. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effects of lessons taught using activities designed with Augmented Reality Technology on the academic achievement and motivation of students in the teaching of the subjects of Yusuf Has Hacib, Kasgarli Mahmud, Kutadgu Bilig and Divanu Lugati’t-Turk which are among the cultural heritages called “Old Turkish Language Mementoes.” In this context, Augmented Reality environments were designed in relation to the mentioned works and authors and these designs were uploaded to AURASMA 3D application and made available for smart phones. Quantitative research model was adapted in the study and the quasi-experimental method with pre-test-post-test control group was used. At the end of the study whose procedures took 6 weeks in total with the involvement of 50 college students, it was determined that AR activities has a positive effect on the academic success of the students and increases the academic success of the students, and it creates a positive environment which motivates the students towards the lesson and learning.

This study was designed to investigate the relationship between language and children’s construction of the concept of objects, actions, and states. Participants of this study are 120 children whose ages range from 3 to 14 years. Ten children participated from each age group and 10 adults participated as normative group. Data were collected using 28 words which were identified and grouped according to the purpose of this study. Participants were asked the question “What is x?’ for each word in a reserved room. The audio recorded data were transcribed and coded. The data were analyzed primarily qualitatively but quantitatively as well to support qualitative findings. The findings reveal that younger children rely more on their perceptual experience and linguistic input while 7-year-olds and older ones rely more on instructional language in the construction of the concepts related to objects, actions and states. Adults differ from all age groups with their usage of metaphors to refer to objects. It has been noted that linguistic, perceptual and instructional experiences work in an interwoven way but each one seems to be dominant at certain ages.

Both linguistically and conceptually, the acquisition of time by children is pretty late when the process is compared with the acquisition and usage of linguistic elements denoting objects, states, actions and situations. This study investigated how children transform their Circadian time to Bergsonian time and how they encode Newtonian time linguistically. The study was carried out by the researcher’s longitudinal observation of his three daughters from the ages 2 to 10. In order to verify the idiosyncratic temporal production of the three children, cross-sectional data were also collected using a day organization test. The results show that, (a) children between the ages of 3 and 4 live more in deictic time in that they refer to momentarily completed events such as a parent’s or sibling’s coming home or doing something which is worth mentioning from point of view of the child (“Baba geldi” ‘Daddy is home.’ or “düştü” ‘(it) fell’). (b) Children live in the Circadian time until the ages of 8-11 in that they conceive of and state time with reference to zeitgebers such as sleep-wake or day-night cycles. They also live simultaneously in Bergsonian time in that they refer to temporal units (e.g. days) with reference to the closest temporal unit (e.g. Dünden sonra” ‘The day dfter yesterday’ to mean the day before yesterday and “Yarından sonra” ‘The day after tomorrow’. (d) They begin to adopt Newtonian time with reference to certain successive events such as “Two days earlier” and then refine their conceptualization of Newtonian time by referring to hours (but not minutes). (e) Children are pretty ahead of Newtonian time in the construction of complex temporal relations linguistically.

Objective: The aim of this study was to screen various extracts of plant of Gentian (Gentiana pyrenaica L.), Tarragon (Artemisia dracunculus L.), Persimmon (Diospyros kaki), Raspberry (Rubus ideaus) to display potent antimikrobial, antifungal and antioxidant activity in vitro, total phenolic and flavonoid contents in order to find possible sources for future novel antioxidants in food and pharmaceutical formulations. Material and Methods: The antioxidant properties of 12 different samples of medicinal and aromatic plants such as leaves, flowers and scapus were investigated by DPPH, FRAP and CUPRAC assays. Total phenolic, total flavonoid content and the antimicrobial properties of extracts from these plants were also determined. Antibacterial and antifungal activities were investigated by microdilution method and agar diffusion method respectively. Results: According to the determination of antioxidant results, dried leaves of Persimmon (Diospyros kaki) (obtained from Trabzon) plant had the best antioxidant activity that was carried out in all analyzes (except the analysis of total polyphenol). In accordance with analysis of total polyphenol, activity of purple flower of Gentian (Gentiana pyrenaica L.) plant was measured at 31,303±0,274 mg GAE /g dry sample and thus this plant had the highest total phenolic content. Antimicrobial activity tests were carried out using disc diffusion methods with 12 microbial species and most of them displayed good-moderate antimicrobial activity. Conclusion: Due to their antimicrobial, antifungal and antioxidant properties, the extracts some of these plants might be used as potential sources of natural antioxidant and antimicrobial agents.

Recent advances in colloidal synthesis methods have led to an increased research focus on halide perovskites. Due to the highly ionic crystal structure of perovskite materials, a stability issue pops up, especially against polar solvents such as water. In this study, we investigate water-driven structural evolution of ${\mathrm{CsPbBr}}_{3}$ by performing experiments and state-of-the-art first-principles calculations. It is seen that while an optical image shows the gradual degradation of the yellowish ${\mathrm{CsPbBr}}_{3}$ structure under daylight, UV illumination reveals that the degradation of crystals takes place in two steps: transition from a blue-emitting to green-emitting structure and and then a transition from a green-emitting phase to complete degradation. We found that as-synthesized ${\mathrm{CsPbBr}}_{3}$ nanowires (NWs) emit blue light under a 254 nm UV source. Before the degradation, first, ${\mathrm{CsPbBr}}_{3}$ NWs undergo a water-driven structural transition to form large bundles. It is also seen that formation of such bundles provides longer-term environmental stability. In addition theoretical calculations revealed the strength of the interaction of water molecules with ligands and surfaces of ${\mathrm{CsPbBr}}_{3}$ and provide an atomistic-level explanation to a transition from ligand-covered NWs to bundle formation. Further interaction of green-light--emitting bundles with water causes complete degradation of ${\mathrm{CsPbBr}}_{3}$ and the photoluminescence signal is entirely quenched. Moreover, Raman and x-ray-diffraction measurements revealed that completely degraded regions are decomposed to ${\mathrm{PbBr}}_{2}$ and CsBr precursors. We believe that the findings of this study may provide further insight into the degradation mechanism of ${\mathrm{CsPbBr}}_{3}$ perovskite by water.

OBJECTIVES The goal of this study was to compare the effects of 2 different regimens on blood glucose levels of living-donor liver transplant. MATERIALS AND METHODS The study participants were randomly allocated to the dextrose in water plus insulin infusion group (group 1, n = 60) or the dextrose in water infusion group (group 2, n = 60) using a sealed envelope technique. Blood glucose levels were measured 3 times during each phase. When the blood glucose level of a patient exceeded the target level, extra insulin was administered via a different intravenous route. The following patient and procedural characteristics were recorded: age, sex, height, weight, body mass index, end-stage liver disease, Model for End-Stage Liver Disease score, total anesthesia time, total surgical time, and number of patients who received an extra bolus of insulin. The following laboratory data were measured pre- and postoperatively: hemoglobin, hematocrit, platelet count, prothrombin time, international normalized ratio, potassium, creatinine, total bilirubin, and albumin. RESULTS No hypoglycemia was noted. The recipients exhibited statistically significant differences in blood glucose levels during the dissection and neohepatic phases. Blood glucose levels at every time point were significantly different compared with the first dissection time point in group 1. Excluding the first and second anhepatic time points, blood glucose levels were significantly different as compared with the first dissection time point in group 2 (P < .05). CONCLUSIONS We concluded that dextrose with water infusion alone may be more effective and result in safer blood glucose levels as compared with dextrose with water plus insulin infusion for living-donor liver transplant recipients. Exogenous continuous insulin administration may induce hyperglycemic attacks, especially during the neohepatic phase of living-donor liver transplant surgery. Further prospective studies that include homogeneous patient subgroups and diabetic recipients are needed to support the use of dextrose plus water infusion without insulin.

The safety of healthy volunteer donors is one of the most important issues in living-donor liver transplantation. Use of the Pringle maneuver during donor hepatectomy can result in liver ischemia-reperfusion (IR) injury. The objective of this study was to examine the effects of isoflurane and propofol on IR injury caused by the Pringle maneuver during donor hepatectomy.A total of 70 American Society of Anesthesiology I-II donors aged 18-65 years who underwent hepatectomy were included in the study. The patients were randomly divided into 2 groups: propofol and isoflurane. Plasma superoxide dismutase (SOD), malondialdehyde (MDA), total oxidative status (TOS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), and oxidative stress index (OSI) were measured before surgery (t0) and after surgery (t1).There were no statistically significant differences in demographic features, anesthesia, and times of surgery between the groups (P.05). Plasma TAC levels at t0 and t1 were significantly lower in the propofol group than in the isoflurane group (P.05). OSI at t1 was significantly higher in the propofol group than in the isoflurane group (P.05). MDA levels were significantly higher in the propofol group than in the isoflurane group at t0 (P.05). MDA levels level were significantly higher in the isoflurane group than in the propofol group at t1 (P.05).Propofol may have protective effects against IR injury caused by the Pringle maneuver during donor hepatectomy in living-donor transplantations. However, the effectiveness of propofol for clinical use needs to be investigated further.

Glutathione (GSH) and enzymes related to this antioxidant molecule are often overexpressed in tumor cells and may contribute to drug resistance. Blockade of glutathione transferases (GSTs) has been proposed to potentiate the efficacy of chemotherapeutic drugs in cancer. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of chlorophyllin that has antioxidant properties, and also interferes with the activity of GST P1-1, on breast cancers in vitro and in vivo. The in vivo studies were conducted using an N-methyl- N-nitrosourea (MNU)-induced chemical carcinogenesis model in laboratory rats. DNA damage, GST activity, and GSH levels were determined in liver and tumor tissues. Treatment with chlorophyllin increased the GSH levels in the liver and significantly decreased DNA damage in the blood, liver, and tumor tissues. Even though tumorigenesis was delayed in rats receiving chlorophyllin before MNU injections, once the tumors emerged, the progression of tumor appeared to be faster than in the animals that received the carcinogen only. Out of nine breast cell lines, GST P1-1 expression was detected in MCF-12A, MDA-MB-231, and HCC38. Concomitant incubation with chlorophyllin and docetaxel did not significantly affect cell proliferation and viability. Chlorophyllin displayed genoprotective effects that initially delayed tumorigenesis. However, once the tumors were established, it may act as a promoter that facilitates tumor growth, potentially by a mechanism independent of cell proliferation and viability. Our results underline the pros and cons of antioxidant treatment in cancer, even if it has a capacity to inhibit GST P1-1.

Bu çalışmada Giresun ilinde yetişen yaban mersininin (Vaccinium myrtillus L.) meyve ve yaprağı, hem yaş hem de kurutulmuş halinin dört farklı çözücüdeki ekstraktları (etanol, aseton, su ve dietil eter) ayrı ayrı incelenmiştir. Bitkisel ürünlerin antioksidan kapasitelerini değerlendirmek için çeşitli yöntemler kullanılmıştır. Bu yöntemler, FRAP (Fe3+ İndirgeme Antioksidan Gücü), DPPH? giderme ve toplam polifenol tayinini içermektedir. FRAP tayini yönünden, ekstraktların indirgeme güçlerinin aseton > etanol > su > dietil eter şeklinde sıralandığı görülmüştür. Serbest radikal giderme aktivitesi antioksidan sonuçlarına göre, kurutulmuş halde alınan örneklerin ekstraktları, yaş haline göre daha iyi düzeyde DPPH radikali giderme aktivitesi sergilemiştir ve en yüksek aktiviteyi çözücüsü etanol olan kuru yaprak ekstraktının gösterdiği bulunmuştur. Toplam fenolik madde miktarı tayinine göre ise, ekstraktlarda var olan fenolik madde içeriklerinin gallik asit eşdeğeri cinsinden 0.121±0.00-19.484±1.85 mg/g aralığında değiştiği ve en yüksek aktiviteyi yaban mersininin çözücüsü su olan kuru yaprak ekstraktının gösterdiği belirlenmiştir. Aynı zamanda bitki ekstrelerindeki antimikrobiyal aktivite, Agar disk difüzyon yöntemi kullanılarak tespit edilmiştir. Yaban mersini bitkisi ile hazırlanan ekstraktlar arasında, çözücüsü etanol ve aseton olan ekstrakların test mikroorganizmalarının çoğuna karşı iyi derecede aktivite gösterdiği bulunmuştur. In this study, both fresh and dried fruit, leaves extracts of bilberies (V. myrtillus L.) growed in Giresun have been investigated in four different solvents (ethanol, acetone, water and diethyl ether). Several methods have been utilized to evaluate the antioxidant capacity of plant materials. These methods include FRAP (ferric ion reducing antioxidant power), DPPH? (free radical) and analysis of total polyphenol. The reducing powers of extract have been acetone > ethanol > water > diethyl ether respectively. According to free radical scavenging activity results, the extracts obtained dried samples have had better DPPH radical scavenging results than fresh ones and the dried leaves extracts in ethanol have showed the highest activity. According to analysis of total phenol, the phenolic contents in extracts have been determined as gallic acid equivalent ranging from 0.121±0.00 to 19.484±1.85 mg/g and the dried bilberry leaves extracts in water have showed the highest activity. In addition, antimicrobial activities of plant extracts have been determined by the agar disk diffusion method. The extracts with ethanol and acetone among all bilberry extract have been showed a good degree of activity against most of tested microorganisms.

Herein, we report room temperature Cr-doping for all-inorganic perovskites that have attracted great attention in recent years due to their extraordinary optical properties, low cost, and ease of synthesis. Incorporation of Cr 3 + ions into the perovskite crystal lattices is achieved by following a facile route involving an antisolvent recrystallization method at room temperature. It is shown that both Cr-doping and formation of crystals in the CsPbBr x Cl 3 − x phase are provided by increasing the concentration of the CrCl 3 solution. It is also observed that the doping procedure leads to the emergence of three types of distinctive peaks in the PL spectrum originating from CsPbBr x Cl 3 − x domains (476–427 nm), Cr-strained host lattices (515 nm), and midgap states formed by Cr dopants (675–775 nm). It is also found that the Cr-doped perovskites emitting a dark violaceous color change their color to white with a high color rendering index (88) in 30-day time intervals. Schwannoma is benign nerve sheath tumor of Schwann cells. A 41-year-old female patient presented with pain and a complaint of inability to see. A mass revealed in left eye. Mass was histopathologically evaluated as schwannoma. This lesion in a rare location is presented with the literature.

ObjectiveThe aim of this study was to assess if perineural administration of dexmedetomidine combined with levobupivacaine increases the duration of the sensory and motor blockade of a sciatic peripheral nerve block in rats.MethodsForty male Sprague–Dawley rats were randomly divided into 5 experimental groups: Group 1, sham; Group 2, perineural levobupivacaine (0.2 mL of a 0.5% solution) and subcutaneous saline; Group 3, perineural levobupivacaine (0.2 mL of a 0.5% solution) plus dexmedetomidine (20 µg/kg dexmedetomidine) and subcutaneous saline; Group 4, perineural saline and subcutaneous dexmedetomidine; and Group 5, perineural saline and subcutaneous saline. Pain reflexes in response to a thermal stimulus were measured at 0 and 240 minutes after drug administration by using a hot-plate and tail-flick tests. Neurobehavioral status, including sensory and motor functions, was assessed by an investigator who was blinded to the experimental groups every 30 minutes until normal functioning resumed.ResultsThe sensory and motor blockades of the rats did not increase in the treatment with dexmedetomidine plus levobupivacaine when compared with the treatment with levobupivacaine alone at all the time points (P > 0.05). Compared with rats in Group 2, those in Group 3 showed significantly higher latency times at 30 and 60 minutes in the hot plate test (P < 0.01). At 30 and 60 minutes, the latency times of the rats in Group 3 were longer than those in Group 2 in the tail-flick test (P < 0.01). Furthermore, the durations of the complete sensory and motor blockade were similar when treatment with levobupivacaine plus dexmedetomidine was compared with treatment with levobupivacaine alone.ConclusionsA 20µg/kg dose of dexmedetomidine added to levobupivacaine did not increase the duration of the sensory and motor blockades in rats. However, treatment with dexmedetomidine plus levobupivacaine increased the quality of analgesia in rats.

We compared the effectiveness of three anaesthetic regimens (propofol alone, propofol with remifentanil and sevoflurane alone), with respect to seizure duration and seizure quality in patients undergoing electroconvulsive therapy. Thirty-nine patients underwent a total of 234 electroconvulsive therapy treatments in this prospective, observer blinded, crossover study. Each patient received either propofol 1 mg/kg alone (Group P), propofol 0.5 mg/kg and remifentanil 1 µg/kg (Group R), or sevoflurane alone 6% (Group S) for their initial electroconvulsive therapy session. The patients subsequently received an alternative regimen in their next session, such as from propofol 1 mg/kg alone to propofol 0.5 mg/kg and remifentanil 1 µg/kg, from propofol 0.5 mg/kg and remifentanil 1 µg/kg to sevoflurane alone 6%, or from sevoflurane alone 6% to a continuing alternation between drugs at each session, until their sixth session. Muscle paralysis was achieved with 1 mg/kg succinylcholine. Seizure duration, postictal suppression index, early and midictal amplitude were recorded. BACKGROUND: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) still leads to significant postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) and pain. Our aim was to evaluate the efficacy of dexamethasone or pheniramine hydrogen maleate, either alone or combined, in reducing the stress response and symptoms after LC. METHODS: Patients were randomly assigned to 1 of 4 groups, each consisting of 20 patients: control, dexamethasone (8 mg/2 mL), pheniramine hydrogen maleate (45.5 mg/2 mL), and the combined group. The drugs were given before anesthesia induction. RESULTS: C-reactive protein levels (CRP) and visual analog scale (VAS) scores were significantly less in the dexamethasone (P .003) and combined groups (P .001). Both dexamethasone (P .001) and pheniramine hydrogen maleate (P .005) significantly reduced PONV. CONCLUSIONS: Dexamethasone significantly reduced postoperative pain and the systemic acutephase response, whereas these effects were only partially attained with pheniramine hydrogen maleate. Both dexamethasone and pheniramine hydrogen maleate significantly reduced PONV. An additive effect seemed to occur if these drugs were used in combination. © 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Patients with dementia have a lower bispectral index score (BIS) when awake than age-matched healthy controls.The primary aim was to compare the BIS and the dose of propofol required for induction in patients suffering from cognitive impairment with that in those who had normal cognitive function. This study also evaluated the effects of cognitive impairment in the elderly on anaesthetic agent consumption during surgery and on emergence from anaesthesia.This randomised controlled study was carried out in a university hospital. Patients over 65 years of age, ASA I-II and scheduled for elective orthopaedic procedures were allocated to one of two groups.Patients (n = 92) were allocated according to their Mini Mental State Examination score: 25 or higher (group 1) or 21 or less (group 2). All patients received propofol 0.5 mg kg(-1) following the commencement of a remifentanil infusion at 0.5 μg kg(-1) min(-1). After incremental doses of propofol up to loss of consciousness, a propofol infusion was started at 75 μg kg(-1) min(-1). Propofol and remifentanil infusion doses were adjusted to keep the BIS value between 45 and 60 during surgery.MMSE score was evaluated 24 h before and after surgery. The anaesthetic consumption, mean arterial pressure, HR and BIS values of the patients were recorded.Before surgery, mean Mini Mental State Examination scores were 26.8 ± 1.6 and 16.6 ± 4.2 in group 1 and 2, respectively. These returned to baseline value 24 h after surgery in group 1 (26.6 ± 1.5) and group 2 (15.6 ± 4.3). Before induction, four of 45 patients (8.9%) in group 1 had a BIS value less than 93 compared with 13 of 47 (27.7%) in group 2 (P = 0.02). The mean BIS value was significantly lower in group 2 than in group 1 before induction, during loss of consciousness, 3 and 5 min after discontinuation of the anaesthetic agents and before extubation (P0.05). The induction dose of propofol was lower in group 2 than in group 1 (P = 0.02). The eye opening time was significantly longer in group 2 than in group 1 (P = 0.03).The baseline BIS value was lower in patients with cognitive impairment than in those with normal cognitive function. The former received less propofol during induction and eye opening time was longer. On the basis of our findings from the recovery period, we suggest that the recommended target BIS value for adequate anaesthesia in the general population is inappropriate for patients with cognitive impairment.
