This work presents an overview of the integrated strategy developed, as part of the DEMO Key Design Integration Issue 1 (KDII1), to protect the EU-DEMO first wall (FW) from planned and unplanned plasma transients by employing discrete limiters. The present Breeding Blanket (BB) FW design, which aims at minimizing the loss of neutrons while travelling to the breeding zone, is able to withstand steady state heat fluxes up to ≈1-1.5 MW/m2 [1], which is not sufficient to guarantee its integrity for most plasma-FW direct contact. This is different from ITER, which has a FW designed for peak heat loads up to 4.6 MW/m2 [2], and it does not have the DEMO BB breeding related requirement. A series of documents was compiled in the DEMO Pre-Conceptual Design Phase, in support of the KDII1. The work presented here was presented at the 2020 DEMO Gate 1 (G1) review, and collects also the comments of the panel and the relative additional studies triggered by them. The design process, presented in this paper was adopted to systematically evaluate the impact of design changes, or new physics inputs, on the FW protection strategy and integration issues. It includes compiling the list of transients, and performing the relative plasma simulations, the design of discrete limiters and the evaluation of their capability to reduce the heat flux density on the FW, and finally a preliminary analysis of the heat loads effects on the Plasma Facing Components (PFC). All these aspects, together with preliminary limiter design, where considered since the beginning, in an integrated way.

The evaluation of the impact of plasma-facing components damage on subsequent plasma operation is an important issue for ITER. During the first phase of the operation of WEST, a few ITER-like divertor plasma-facing units (PFUs) have been installed on the lower divertor. One PFU was pre-damaged under electron beam gun thermal loading, before its installation in WEST, and the subsequent evolution of the damage was studied after the WEST plasma exposure. This paper presents the procedure followed to get the pre-damaged PFU. It consists of the characterization of the response of tungsten samples representative of WEST PFU under high heat flux (HHF) loading, the selection of damage (namely, small cracks, crack network, crack network, and W melt droplets). Finally, according to the WEST plasma loading conditions, the blocks with damage within the PFU and the position of the pre-damaged PFU on the WEST lower divertor are attributed. The first results obtained after an initial plasma exposure in WEST lead to the assessment, as expected with regard to the heat loading conditions, that no major surface aspect modification was found. This result emphasized the possibility of implementing as pre-damaged small droplets of melted tungsten in a high heat-loaded zone for a future WEST experimental campaign.

Tungsten (W) melting due to transient power loads, for example those delivered by edge localised modes (ELMs), is a major concern for next step fusion devices. A series of experiments has been performed on JET to investigate the dynamics of Type-I ELM-induced transient melting. Following initial exposures in 2013 of a W-lamella with sharp leading edge in the bulk W outer divertor, new experiments have been performed in 2016–2017 on a protruding W-lamella with a 15° slope, allowing direct and spatially resolved (0.85 mm/pixel) observation of the top surface using the IR thermography system viewing from the top of the poloidal cross-section. Thermal and IR analysis have already been conducted assuming the geometrical projection of the parallel heat flux on the W-lamellas, thus ignoring the gyro-radius orbit of plasma particles. Although it is well justified during L-mode or inter-ELM period, the hypothesis becomes questionable during ELM when the ion Larmor radius is larger. The goal of this paper is to extend the previous analysis based on the forward approach to the H-mode discharges and investigate in particular the gyro-radius effect during the Type-I ELMs, those used to achieve transient melting on the slope of the protruding W-lamella. Surface temperatures measured by the IR camera are compared with reconstructed synthetic data from 3D thermal modelling using heat loads derived from optical projection of the parallel heat flux (ignoring the gyro-radius orbit), 2D gyro-radius orbit and particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations describing the influence of finite Larmor-radius effects and electrical potential on the deposited power flux. Results show that the ELM power deposition behaves differently than the optical projection of the parallel heat flux, contrary to the L-mode observations, and may thus be due to the much larger gyro-orbits of the energetic ELM ions in comparison to L-mode or inter-ELM conditions. Plasma facing components (PFC) within a fusion device are subjected to a harsh operating environment such as high heat fluxes and exposure to high flux of hydrogen isotopes. This exposure can lead to a high fuel retention that can raise serious concern from safety point of view. One of the reason for the use of W as a material for construction of the first wall is aimed to reduce thefuel retention compared to carbon wall. Nitrogen seeding, used in the operation of fusion equipment, represents a method to cool the divertor plasma and to reduce the W source in the divertor during inter ELMs. The effects of light impurity seeding have been analyzed so far mainly with focus on plasma heat transport and energy confinement and less on the plasma-wall interaction. However an exposure of the PFC to a combination of hydrogen isotopes and nitrogen can lead to changes in properties of exposed surfaces or to unexpected material behavior.In the present work the influence of nitrogen on deuterium retention into the W coatings produced by high power impulse magnetron sputtering (HIPIMS) has been investigated.NRA (Nuclear Reaction Analysis), XRD (X-Ray Diffraction) measurements, XPS (X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy) and SEM (Scanning Electron Microscopy) investigations were used for assessment of the chemical composition, fuel retention and the structure of the coatings. The elemental depth profile has been evaluated by using GDOES (Glow Discharge Optical Emission Spectrometry) measurement. A deuterium content up to 16 at.% has been obtained within the W coatings containing 30 at.% of nitrogen. It has been noticed that the N addition leads to an increase of the deuterium content within the coatings compared with W coatings obtained just in deuterium environment.

A dedicated study on JET-ILW, deploying two types of ICRH antennas and spectroscopic observation spots at two outboard, beryllium limiters, has provided insight on long-range (up to 6m) RFenhanced plasma-surface interactions (RF-PSI) due to near-antenna electric fields. To aid in the interpretation of optical emission measurements of these effects, the antenna near-fields are computed using the TOPICA code, specifically run for the ITER-like antenna (ILA); similar modelling already existed for the standard JET antennas (A2). In the experiment, both antennas were operated in current drive mode, as RF-PSI tends to be higher in this phasing and at similar power (∼0.5 MW). When sweeping the edge magnetic field pitch angle, peaked RF-PSI effects, in the form of 2-4 fold increase in the local Be source,are consistently measured with the observation spots magnetically connect to regions of TOPICAL-calculated high near-fields, particularly at the near-antenna limiters. It is also found that similar RF-PSI effects are produced by the two types of antenna on similarly distant limiters. Although this mapping of calculated near-fields to enhanced RF-PSI gives only qualitative interpretion of the data, the present dataset is expected to provide a sound experimental basis for emerging RF sheath simulation model validation.

ERO is a Monte-Carlo code for modeling plasma-wall interaction and 3D plasma impurity transport for applications in fusion research. The code has undergone a significant upgrade (ERO2.0) which allows increasing the simulation volume in order to cover the entire plasma edge of a fusion device, allowing a more self-consistent treatment of impurity transport and comparison with a larger number and variety of experimental diagnostics. In this contribution, the physics-relevant technical innovations of the new code version are described and discussed. The new capabilities of the code are demonstrated by modeling of beryllium (Be) erosion of the main wall during JET limiter discharges. Results for erosion patterns along the limiter surfaces and global Be transport including incident particle distributions are presented. A novel synthetic diagnostic, which mimics experimental wide-angle 2D camera images, is presented and used for validating various aspects of the code, including erosion, magnetic shadowing, non-local impurity transport, and light emission simulation.
