Abstract

Changes in sedimentation and morphology of the tidal delta and adjacent beaches of the Oualidia lagoon were studied using bathymetric data and aerial photographs. This lagoon has been classified as a RAMSAR site since 2005, offering great ecological and socio-economic value for the local population. However, in recent decades, the Oualidia lagoon has suffered from several types of degradation, including the water and sediment containmentphenomenon. The present study evaluates the evolution of the morphological and sedimentary change of the downstream area of this lagoon on a 10-year time scale between 2006 and 2016. Bathymetric data and aerial photos showed good agreement and provided a large number of interesting results in terms of sedimentary and morphological changes in the downstream area of the lagoon. Thus, the notable changes mainly concern three morphological units of the lagoon, namely the tidal delta, the adjacent beaches and the main channel. These changes are related to natural (hydrodynamics, waves, currents...) and anthropogenic (dikes, sediment traps...) factors. 37. GIS-based landslide susceptibility mapping in the Safi region, West Morocco.

Abstract

This study aims to establish susceptibility maps for the Moroccan Safi region, which is affected by karstification processes. This process is the predisposing factor for various landslide types such as debris flows and rock falls. In the first phase of this study, a landslide inventory was prepared by geomorphological approach based on visual interpretation of aerial photographs combined with direct observations in the field. The obtained inventory included 234 landslides: 14 rock slides and 75 debris flows in Brown Clay Formation, 74 rock falls in sandstone and 71 rock topples in Dridrat Limestone Formations. The inventory map showed that landslide phenomena occur mainly in the northwest and along the active coastal cliffs in the south of Safi. In the second phase, four landslide susceptibility maps were realized using the bivariate statistical method of Geographical Information System (GIS) matrix method (GMM). The established landslide susceptibility maps were validated by the degree of fit method. Obtained results showed that landslide phenomenon occurs mainly in the northwest and along the coastal cliffs in the south of the study area. Moreover, very high and high susceptibility levels were limited to the area including industrial and touristic activities as well as historical monuments. Overall, landslides were associated to karstification, lithology, karstic rocks and karstic spring presence, which are considered as predisposing and causal factors. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

International audience; The metal content in surface sediments (0-2 cm, 26 samples), in a sediment core (120, 1 cm slices), taken from Moulay Bousselham (Morocco) was investigated. Concentrations of Al, Fe, Mn, Pb, Zn, Cu, Ni, Cr, Cd, As, and Hg were evaluated in surface and cored sediments of Moulay Bousselham lagoon. Significantly high concentrations in lg g-1 dw of Pb (31.7-6.2), Zn (758.9-167), Cu (310.7- 22), Ni (96-10.5), Cr (113-18.9), Cd (0.84-0.02), As (1-0.1), and Hg (0.61-0.02) were found in sediment samples from Moulay Bousselham lagoon. Calculated enrichment factors [EFMe = (Me/Al)sample/(Me/Al)background], using Al as a normalizer, and correlation matrices showed that metal pollution in Merja Zerga of Moulay Bousselham lagoon was the product of anthropogenic sources, while the metal content in Merja Kehla was of natural origins. The results suggest that a major change in the sedimentary regime of the lagoon, associated with internal trapping and re-distribution of heavy metal, has been occurring in the past few decades. The cause would appear to be the construction of a Nador Canal at the lagoon. Probable effects concentrations (PEC) were often exceeded for heavy metals in the lagoon sediments, especially for Zn, Cu, Ni, and Cr, and four stations, stations MZ-11, MZ-12, MZ-13, MZ-14, MZ-16, and MZ-17, had multiple metals at presumptively toxic levels. These comparisons suggest that sediment metal levels in the river are clearly high and probably pose an environmental risk at some stations. The levels of most of the metals were not greatly enriched, a consideration that is of the utmost importance when contamination issues are at stake. Metal concentrations found in Moulay Bousselham lagoon were comparable to aquatic systems classified as contaminated from other regions of the world.

Abstract

The unconfined aquifer of coastal Chaouia is an example of groundwater resources subjected to intensive withdrawals in Morocco. In this study, we focus on the salinization of groundwater in coastal aquifers, by physic-chemical analysis of 39 groundwater samples collected from wells during May 2011. The hydrochemical results show two facies types, the first is chloride-sodium, caracterizing the wells in the coastal fringe; the second is chloride bicarbonate-calcium characterizing waters exploited in marly limestone of the Cretaceous. The marine influence (aerosols and seawater intrusion), aquifer rock dissolution/precipitation and infiltration of irrigation water are among the causes of the increase in the salinity of groundwater, in addition to the excessive exploitation of groundwater in the study area.EDITEUR Z.W. Abstract

This study focuses on the application of the new method, GALDIT, for the cartography of aquifer vulnerability due to seawater intrusion in the area of Chaouia coast (Morocco) which is characterized by intense agricultural activity and low depth of the groundwater. The method was developed by Chachadi and Lobo-Ferreira in 2001 after that modified in 2005 and is specific for coastal aquifers. The computing of the GALDIT index (GI) is based on six parameters: Groundwater occurrence (aquifer type); Aquifer hydraulic conductivity; Depth to groundwater level above the sea; Distance from the shore (distance inland perpendicular from shoreline); Impact of existing status of seawater intrusion in the area; and Thickness of the aquifer. This GALDIT is the indicator scores and summing them and dividing by the total weight for determining the relative role of each one. The results of this study show a vulnerability of the aquifer to the seawater intrusion with a high risk in the fringe littoral areas and areas in proximity to the estuary of Oum Er-Rbia River and can reach 3 km towards land.
