Defect-enhanced energy storage Dielectric capacitors are vital components of electronics and power systems. The thin-film materials of which capacitors are composed are usually optimized by changing the material composition. However, Kim et al. found that postprocessing an already effective thin-film dielectric by high-energy ion bombardment further improved the material because of the introduction of specific types of defects that ultimately improved the energy storage performance. The hafnate perovskites PbHfO

Over the last 30 years, the study of ferroelectric oxides has been revolutionized by the implementation of epitaxial-thin-film-based studies, which have driven many advances in the understanding of ferroelectric physics and the realization of novel polar structures and functionalities. New questions have motivated the development of advanced synthesis, characterization, and simulations of epitaxial thin films and, in turn, have provided new insights and applications across the micro-, meso-, and macroscopic length scales. This review traces the evolution of ferroelectric thin-film research through the early days developing understanding of the roles of size and strain on ferroelectrics to the present day, where such understanding is used to create complex hierarchical domain structures, novel polar topologies, and controlled chemical and defect profiles. The extension of epitaxial techniques, coupled with advances in high-throughput simulations, now stands to accelerate the discovery and study of new ferroelectric materials. Coming hand-in-hand with these new materials is new understanding and control of ferroelectric functionalities. Today, researchers are actively working to apply these lessons in a number of applications, including novel memory and logic architectures, as well as a host of energy conversion devices.

The hafnate perovskites PbHfO3 (antiferroelectric) and SrHfO3 ("potential" ferroelectric) are studied as epitaxial thin films on SrTiO3 (001) substrates with the added opportunity of observing a morphotropic phase boundary (MPB) in the Pb1-x Srx HfO3 system. The resulting (240)-oriented PbHfO3 (Pba2) films exhibited antiferroelectric switching with a saturation polarization ≈53 µC cm-2 at 1.6 MV cm-1 , weak-field dielectric constant ≈186 at 298 K, and an antiferroelectric-to-paraelectric phase transition at ≈518 K. (002)-oriented SrHfO3 films exhibited neither ferroelectric behavior nor evidence of a polar P4mm phase . Instead, the SrHfO3 films exhibited a weak-field dielectric constant ≈25 at 298 K and no signs of a structural transition to a polar phase as a function of temperature (77-623 K) and electric field (-3 to 3 MV cm-1 ). Ferroelectrics and related materials (e.g., non-traditional ferroelectrics such as relaxors) have long been used in a range of applications, but with the advent of new ways of modeling, synthesizing, and characterizing these materials, continued access to astonishing breakthroughs in our fundamental understanding come each year. While we still rely on these materials in a range of applications, we continue to re-write what is possible to be done with them. In turn, assumptions that have underpinned the use and design of certain materials are progressively being revisited. Oxide-based thermoelectric materials have the advantages of high-temperature stability, low toxicity and low processing cost comparted to other metal-based systems. However, achieving ZT > 1 remain elusive especially for n-type bulk oxide thermoelectrics. Here, we report the experimental demonstration of ZT > 1 in n-type oxides by synthesizing composites of Nb-doped SrTiO3 (STN) with natural graphite. Introduction of conductive graphite inclusions in STN matrix has led to a surge in electrical conductivity due to 21-times increase in weighted mobility ( μ w ) of electrons resulting in high thermoelectric power factor ~5400 µW m K 2 , which is ~16-times higher than that of pure STN. Furthermore, we could restrain the increase in thermal conductivity by attaining enhanced Umklapp scattering along with phonon-glass-like temperature-independent phonon mean-free-path above Debye temperature. We have achieved the maximum ZT ~1.42 in STN+ 0.5 wt% G composite, which is 15-times enhancement compared to STN. Our proposed way of designing rare-earth-free composites with graphite can potentially open up the possibility of fabricating novel high-temperature thermoelectric generators.

Sintered porous balls were prepared from waste rice husk (RH) for thermal insulation purposes on the top of the ladles and tundishes in iron and steel industries. As the permanent insulating structure is not possible, temporary insulation is done by using agricultural wastes for economy that burn out and produce porous ash-based insulating layer. But the layer formed is non-uniform in thickness, causing non-uniform cooling pattern of the stored steel and variation in properties. Also burning of the wastes causes various occupational health hazards. Reduction in health risk with uniform insulating layer thickness could be achieved by using the temporary insulation as a sintered porous ball. Here we report the first ever studies on nanomechanical properties e.g., nanohardness and Young׳s modulus for human hair of Indian origin. Three types of hair samples e.g., virgin hair samples (VH), bleached hair samples (BH) and Fe-tannin complex colour treated hair samples (FT) with the treatment by a proprietary hair care product are used in the present work. The proprietary hair care product involves a Fe-salt based formulation. The hair samples are characterized by optical microscopy, atomic force microscopy, field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDAX) genesis line map, EDAX spot mapping, nanoindentation, tensile fracture, and X-ray diffraction techniques. The nanoindentation studies are conducted on the cross-sections of the VH, BH and FT hair samples. The results prove that the nanomechanical properties e.g., nanohardness and Young׳s modulus are sensitive to measurement location e.g., cortex or medulla and presence or absence of the chemical treatment. Additional results obtained from the tensile fracture experiments establish that the trends reflected from the evaluations of the nanomechanical properties are general enough to hold good. Based on these observations a schematic model is developed. The model explains the present results in a qualitative yet satisfactory manner.

Environmental friendly, non-toxic double perovskite BaxSr2-xTiCoO6 compositions with 0 ≤ x ≤ 0.2 were synthesized using solid-state reaction route for high temperature thermoelectric (TE) applications. XRD and SEM studies confirmed the presence of single-phase solid solution with highly dense microstructure for all the oxide compositions. Temperature dependent electrical conductivity measurement showed semiconductor to metal (M-S) transition in these double perovskites. Incorporation of barium in Sr2TiCoO6 pushed M-S transition to higher temperature making it a potential candidate for high temperature TE applications. Conductivity behaviors of these oxides were explained by small polaron model. Furthermore, these oxides exhibit a glass like behavior resulting in low thermal conductivity. Low temperature dielectric measurement revealed relaxor ferroelectric behavior in these oxides below room temperature.
