Background. Different species of Perkinsus spp. have been associated to mortality of commercial mollusks. Goals. The prevalence of Perkinsus sp. in the callista clam Megapitaria squalida was evaluated monthly (June 2015 to November 2016) to determine the relationship between the infection and size of clam. Methods. 5,000 clam seeds (5.73 mm height of the shell and 0.03 g of initial weight) were placed in a fishing refuge of Altata, Sinaloa. A total of 60 specimens were collected each month to evaluate their growth and parasite prevalence. The water physicochemical parameters (temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, depth, and transparency) and the length, height, and width of the shell and final weight of M. squalida were obtained. Results. Ray’s thioglycollate fluid medium test (MFTR) detected spherical cells (10X) of dark color indicating the presence of presumed hypnospores of Perkinsus sp. during the first 17 months of sampling. The mean infection intensity was grade 2 (mild), while the maximum prevalence was 43.33% in the months of November (2015) and March (2016), with an average of 21.05%. None of the Perkinsus sp sample (n = 112) positively detected by MFTR confirmed the presence of the protozoan. There was no correlation (p >0.05) between the prevalence of the pathogen with all the parameters studied. Conclusions. The results suggest that M. squalida is not susceptible to Perkinsus sp. The present represents the first report of Perkinsus sp. In the callista clam M. squalida.

The present study shows the human health risk of Cd, Cu, Hg and Zn by consumption of clams Megapitaria squalida from Northwest Mexico, collected in 2013. The mean concentration for each metal in the soft tissue was: Zn > Cu > Cd > Hg; and mean values of 68.89 ± 37.59—30.36 ± 27.19, 8.77 ± 1.35—6.80 ± 0.36, 4.47 ± 0.21—3.18 ± 0.63 and 0.99 ± 0.81—0.52 ± 0.16 µg/g, respectively. We studied the effects of chronic exposure to metals on energy reserves and reproduction in the clam Megapitaria squalida in two nearby populations exposed to different levels of pollution from mining operations in the Gulf of California, Mexico. Female M. squalida from San Lucas beach had good reproductive health status, whereas Santa Rosalia specimens consistently showed low energy reserves, massive oocyte resorption throughout the year, high frequencies of undifferentiated individuals, low proportions of ripe and spawning organisms, smaller and fewer oocytes per follicle, and significantly lower follicular areas. Ovarian levels of Co, Cu, Pb, Mn, and Zn were consistently higher in clams from Santa Rosalia. The poor reproductive health of clams inhabiting this site may be attributed to their long-term exposure to high Co, Cu, and Pb concentrations, as these have been shown to cause toxicity and reproductive impairments in other marine organisms.

Most fishing is inherently size‐selective, in that fishers preferentially select a subset of the population for harvest based on economic incentives associated with different‐sized fish. Size‐selective fishing influences the targeted population and fishery performance in multiple ways, including changing the reproductive capacity of the target population and altering fishery yield. Understanding how social–ecological variability, including size selectivity, affects target species populations is critical for fisheries management to optimize the benefits of fisheries and the ecological impacts on target populations. In this study, we used yield per recruit, spawning stock biomass per recruit, and length‐based spawning potential ratio models to explore how a range of size selectivity scenarios affect fishery and population productivity for Mexican chocolate clams, Megapitaria squalida, in Loreto, Baja California Sur, Mexico. We found that alternate slot limits result in trade‐offs between fishery yield and reproductive productivity of the target population. A more restrictive slot limit reduced the proportion of the population available to harvest, resulting in higher reproductive capacity of the population, compared to a less restrictive slot limit, conditional on the rate of fishing mortality. In the long run, a more restrictive slot limit will likely lead to a higher number of recruits, larger stock size, and higher long‐term fishery yield relative to a less restrictive scenario. Our findings highlight that how people fish matters, perhaps as much as the quantity of fish harvested; size‐selective fishing that aligns with the life history of target populations and stakeholders’ goals is critical to sustaining fisheries and the valuable food and livelihoods they provide.

The gonadal health status of the chocolate clam Megapitaria squalida collected from the Santa Rosalía mining port and San Lucas beach (reference site), Gulf of California, Mexico, was assessed through histological analysis of the reproductive tissue, from which the histopathological alteration index (HAI) was determined. In addition, copper and iron accumulation in tissue was revealed using histochemical techniques. Our results showed a large presence of copper (30%) and iron (45%) only in the gonad tissue of clams from Santa Rosalía, in which histopathological alterations observed were inflammatory responses, degenerative-progressive processes, cell death, and response to infectious agents. The HAI was significantly higher in Santa Rosalía specimens (mean ± SE, 72.18 ± 6.12) than in San Lucas clams (4.60 ± 1.07). At San Lucas beach, a higher prevalence of histopathological alterations occurred in clams in the spent stage (43.2%) and in autumn (18.4%) and winter (17.8%) in concordance with the normal reproductive rest period, whereas at Santa Rosalía a higher prevalence occurred in clams at the ripe stage (76.9%) and in spring (83.7%). In conclusion, our results showed the deteriorated health condition of gonads in M. squalida from the Santa Rosalía mining port, which suggests there is a relationship with chronic exposure to local high levels of heavy metals. The high prevalence and intensity of histopathological alterations in the gonad suggest a strong adverse effect on gametogenesis, gamete quality, and, ultimately, in the reproductive potential of M. squalida at this site.

We evaluated the total Hg concentration in different tissues of squalid callista Megapitaria squalida in order to measure Hg distribution in tissue and to estimate human health risk. Samples were obtained by free diving in the SW Gulf of California, Mexico. Concentrations are given on a wet weight basis. A total of 89 squalid callista specimens were obtained, presenting an average Hg concentration of 0.07 ± 0.04 µg g−1. There were no significant differences (p > 0.05) in Hg concentration between tissues (visceral mass = 0.09 ± 0.08 µg g−1; mantle = 0.06 ± 0.07 µg g−1; muscle = 0.06 ± 0.04 µg g−1). The low Hg values found in squalid callista and its low risk quotient (HQ = 0.03) suggest that the consumption of squalid callista does not represent a human health risk. However, HQ calculated using MeHg was > 1, it which could indicate a potential risk related to consumption of clams.

In northwestern Mexico (Gulf of California and Pacific Coast), a fishery on the squalid callista Megapitaria squalida (Sowerby, 1835) was established four decades ago, but little is known about its growth. The objective of this study was to assess individual growth parameters by testing the best growth model fitted to M. squalida. Four growth models were tested, von Bertalanffy, Logistic, Gompertz, and Schnute. The best model was selected based on the Akaike information criterion (AIC) and Bayesian information criterion (BIC). The maximum log-likelihood algorithm was used to parametrize the models considering a multiplicative error structure. According to AIC and BIC, the Logistic model was hierarchically ordered in first place, but the Gompertz, von Bertalanffy, and Schnute models received strong support from the data with AIC and BIC. Objective. To detect the presence of presumptive hypnospores of the protozoan Perkinsus sp. in a wild population of the Mexican chocolata clam Megapitaria squalida in the southeastern Gulf of California, using Ray´s fluid thioglycollate medium (RFTM). Material and methods. Thirty specimens with size between 56.17 and 69.04 mm were captured each month, during an annual cycle. Infection prevalence and intensity and water parameters were recorded monthly from September 2012 to September 2013. Results. Perkinsus sp. was detected in tissue samples from the Mexican chocolate clam using the RFTM test by the presence of dark round corpuscles that represent parasite´s hypnospores. Monthly samplings revealed a prevalence of 0-43.33% and an infection intensity ranging from 1 to 4 (no infection = 0 hypnospores/entire preparation, to moderate = 34 hypnospores/entire preparation). Conclusions. Perkinsus sp. is reported for the first time in a wild population of M. squalida in the southesternmost Gulf of California. The results indicate that this protozoan is dispersed intraspecifically and would now, potentially, parasiting a new host in the region., Objetivo. Detectar la presencia de presuntas hipnosporas del protozoario Perkinsus sp. en una población silvestre de la almeja chocolata mexicana (Megapitaria squalida) del sureste del Golfo de California, usando el medio fluido de tioglicolato de Ray (RFTM). Materiales y métodos. Cada mes durante un ciclo anual, se capturaron 30 especímenes con una longitud entre 56.17 y 69.04 mm. La prevalencia e intensidad de la infección y los parámetros del agua se registraron mensualmente desde septiembre 2012 a septiembre 2013. Resultados. Se detectó la presencia de presuntas hipnosporas de Perkinsus sp. en muestras de tejido de la almeja chocolata mexicana usando la prueba RFTM, por la presencia de corpúsculos redondos y oscuros que representan hipnosporas del parásito. Los muestreos mensuales revelaron un rango de prevalencia e intensidad de la infección de 0-43.33% y 1-4 (infección negativa = 0 hipnosporas/preparación, a moderada = 34 hipnosporas/preparación), respectivamente. Conclusiones. Perkinsus sp. es reportado por primera vez en una población silvestre de M. squalida en la parte más al sureste del Golfo de California. Los resultados indican que el parásito está disperso intraespecíficamente y, potencialmente, parasitaría un nuevo huésped en la región.

La almeja chocolate Megapitaria squalida es un recurso pesquero con creciente importancia en el noroeste de México al registrarse un incremento en los volúmenes de captura. Sin embargo, esta pesquería ha observado variaciones importantes en las capturas que podrían estar relacionadas con factores ambientales. Se obtuvieron datos mensuales de producción de M. squalida durante 2002- 2005 y se estimaron series de tiempo de temperatura superficial del mar en la Bahía de La Paz B.C.S. a partir de imágenes mensuales derivadas del sensor MODIS-Aqua. Los resultados indican una relación positiva significativa entre la temperatura superficial del mar y los volúmenes de captura, razón por la cual nuestro trabajo tiene como objetivo estudiar las relaciones entre capturas de Megapitaria squalida (Bivalvia: Veneridae) y la temperatura superficial del mar en La Bahía de la Paz, Baja California Sur, México.Megapitaria squalida (Bivalvia: Veneridae) fishery landings and temperature relationship in Bahía de la Paz, México. The clam Megapitaria squalida is a fishing resource with increasing importance in Northwestern Mexico. Nevertheless, this fishery has shown important variations that could be related to environmental factors. To assess this, monthly landings of M. squalida were analyzed during 2002-2005 for Bahía de La Paz, B.C.S., and were related with monthly time series of sea surface temperature, derived from MODIS-Aqua Sensor. The results showed a positive and significant relationship between sea surface temperature and clam landings. Through histological analyses, this investigation reveals an unusual high incidence of hermaphroditism in Megapitaria squalida, a gonochoric species. A total of 684 specimens were sampled at monthly intervals from February 2007 to January 2008 at Bahia de La Paz and Bahia Magdalena, Baja California Sur, Mexico. Microscopic examination showed that 21.8% of specimens from Bahia de La Paz and 23.5% from Bahia Magdalena were hermaphroditic; in both areas, hermaphroditism was found throughout the year, although in variable proportions. In general, a significantly higher number of females relative to males (chi-square, P < 0.05) were observed in both areas. Our findings indicate that this unusual incidence of hermaphroditism was likely caused by the low population density resulting from overfishing.

The annual reproductive cycle of the squalid callista Megapitaria squalida living in the Ojo de Liebre lagoon was analyzed from January to December 2001. The reproductive activity was analyzed qualitatively (through histological analysis), defining five gonad development stages (undifferentiated, developing, ripe, spawning and spent). A quantitative analysis was also conducted (through the gonadic index and oocyte diameter) to correlate the reproductive activity with water temperature and salinity. Male and female gonads developed and spawned in parallel through time. M. squalida displays a clearly seasonal reproductive cycle in the Ojo de Liebre lagoon, with a long reproductive activity period (January to August) that coincides with the rise in temperature, plus a well defined inactivity period (September to December) with 100% of undifferentiated or spent organisms and the onset of which coincides with the temperature decrease. The "chocolate clam" Megapitaria squalida, is widely consumed by the population of several localities along the Pacific coast. Clams collected from seven stations in Bahía de la Paz, a bay within the Gulf of California, before and after the summer rainy season were analyzed for Pb, Ni, Cd, Mn, Zn, Cu, and Fe. The location of the sampling sites significantly affected the concentration of metals in clam tissues, but not in relation to the proximity to alleged contaminated sites. Clams from a site close to a phosphate mine had the highest levels of Pb, but only in April, and the highest concentrations of Cd were recorded in clams collected in areas with no anthropogenic activities. Clams from sites considered clean had higher levels of Cd, Fe, Zn, and Mn. The mean concentrations (microg/g dry weight) ranged from 0.1 to 7.8 for Pb, from 1.9 to 8.8 for Ni, from 1.5 to 11.1 for Cd, from 2.5 to 14.1 for Mn, from 47.2 to 64.6 for Zn, from 5.4 to 18.7 for Cu, and from 154 to 558 for Fe. Collecting clams in sites apparently pristine is no guarantee that metals will be in low concentrations.

Bivalves reproductive cycle varies according to the particular environmental conditions where they are found, and these reproductive details represent basic information for their capture, management and conservation strategies. With this objective, the reproductive cycle of the clam Megapitaria squalida, inhabiting the Southeast of the Gulf of California (Altata Bay, Sinaloa, Mexico), was studied using histology and changes in the number and size of oocytes, from June 2013 to June 2014. Histological analysis of the gonads showed spawning activity throughout the year, with two peaks. The first was registered in October and it was accompanied by the highest decrease of weight; the second was in February with the highest percentage of spawning population; besides, a resting period was observed in December. The sex-ratio (female:male) of the clam population was 1.08:1 (χ2 = 5.72, d.f. = 1, P < 0.05). Mean oocyte size and number were different (P < 0.05) among all sampling months and fluctuated from 34.6 ± 5.8 µm in June 2014, to 41.9 ± 6.8 µm in February 2014, and from 443.8 ± 424.5 in February 2014, to 1 214.4 ± 267.6 counted in April, respectively. With these results we suggest a protection season from October to November, when the most intense release of gametes occur in this population. Rev. Biol. Trop. 65 (3): 881-889. Se estudió el ciclo reproductivo de la almeja Megapitaria squalida utilizando cortes histológicos de la gónada y cambios en el número y tamaño de los oocitos, en el sur del Golfo de California (Bahía Altata, Sinaloa, México), desde junio 2013 a junio 2014. El análisis histológico de las gónadas, mostró eventos de desove todo el año con dos picos: el primero fue registrado en octubre acompañado con un fuerte decremento en peso de los animales; el segundo en febrero caracterizado por un alto porcentaje de desove en la población. Se observó un periodo de reposo en diciembre. La proporción sexual (hembras:machos) de la población de almejas fue 1.08:1 (χ2 = 5.72, g.l. = 1, P < 0.05). El número y tamaño promedio de los oocitos mostró diferencias (P < 0.05) entre los muestreos mensuales, y fluctuaron de 34.6 ± 5.8 µm en junio 2014 a 41.9 ± 6.8 µm en febrero 2014, y de 443.8 ± 424.5 en febrero 2014, a 1 214.4 ± 267.6 en abril 2014. Se propone una temporada de veda desde octubre a noviembre, ya que en estos meses la liberación de gametos por la población fue más intensa.

The lagoonal system Altata-Ensenada del Pabellón supports important traditional fisheries and mollusc cultures and receives urban and agricultural effluents. The annual mean Cd contents of the oyster and mussel Crassostrea gigas and Mytella strigata of the inner mangrove swamps were higher than that of the clam Megapitaria squalida, which lives in areas under marine influence. Crassostrea corteziensis had the highest Cu and Zn contents, showing that it is a strong accumulator of both metals and especially of Zn, and there were no significant differences in the Pb content of the three species.

"La almeja chocolata Megapitaria squalida representa una de las pesquerías de bivalvos más importantes en Baja California Sur. Sin embargo, poco se sabe sobre el estado actual de esta pesquería. Con el objetivo de obtener una perspectiva del desarrollo de la pesquería, se analizaron las tendencias espacio-temporales de las capturas, utilizando los registros de producción mensual y por localidad de 1999 a 2006. Los resultados muestran seis regiones de pesca importantes: Bahía de La Paz, Laguna Ojo de Liebre, Bahía Magdalena, Laguna San Ignacio, Bahía de Loreto y la costa de Santa Rosalía. En las tres primeras se obtuvieron 96% de las capturas totales. Se observó un incremento en la producción de 1992 (315 t) a 2002 (1,128 t) debido al aumento en la Laguna Ojo de Liebre y Bahía de La Paz, sin embargo es notable la disminución de las capturas en Bahía Magdalena desde el 2001 (457 t) al 2006 (73 t). A partir de 2002 se observó una disminución general de las capturas. Se concluye que la pesquería en Bahía de La Paz y Laguna Ojo de Liebre se encuentra en su máxima capacidad, en Bahía Magdalena hay indicios de sobreexplotación, mientras que en Laguna San Ignacio, Bahía de Loreto y Santa Rosalía podría haber potencial de desarrollo. Se recomienda profundizar en la evaluación del recurso, debido a que las tendencias de disminución de las capturas observadas en los últimos años, pueden estar indicando una excesiva presión de pesca."

The population dynamics of an intertidal population of Megapitaria squalida was studied from September 2002 to February 2003 in Bahía Magdalena, Mexico. To obtain information about the artisanal and recreational fishery of M. squalida, local fishermen at different parts of the bay were interviewed. Clam densities were determined at one unexploited and two exploited sites along perpendicular transects from the shore line. Average clam density was 2.01±1.41 ind/m², densities did not differ significantly between the three sampling sites. The length-total mass relation was Mtot = 0.0001*SL3.1644 (r2 = 0.9804, n = 92) and the length-tissue mass relation was Mtis = 0.0002*SL2.7144 (r² = 0.945, n = 92). Von Bertalanffy-growth parameters were determined using marked individuals. Strong interindividual and also seasonal differences in growth were observed. Average annual values were: K = 0.655, L∞ = 83 mm. Since M. squalida can reach a shell length of more than 135 mm in deeper waters, it is necessary to consider intertidal and subtidal populations separately. Average total mortality (Z) was 1.61 y-1. No fishing mortality was calculated because total mortality Z at the unexploited control site was higher than Z at the exploited sites. It appears that M. squalida migrates into deeper water with increasing shell length, as average shell length increased at lower tidal levels and marked specimens showed a clear migration towards deeper waters. La densidad se determinó en un sitio no explotado y dos sitios explotados utilizando transectos perpendiculares desde la línea costera. También se entrevistó a pescadores locales de diferentes partes de la bahía para obtener información acerca de la pesquería artesanal y recreacional de M. Squalida. La densidad promedio estimada fue de 2.01±1.41 ind/m², sin diferencias significativas entre sitios. La relación de masa y longitud total fue de Mtot = 0.0001*SL3.1644 (r² = 0.9804, n = 92) y la relación de masa y longitud de tejido fue de Mtis = 0.0002*SL2.7144 (r² = 0.945, n = 92). Los parámetros de crecimiento Von Bertalanffy se determinaron utilizando marcadores individuales. Hay grandes diferencias en crecimiento tanto interindividuales como estacionales. Los valores anuales promedio fueron: K = 0.655, L∞ = 83 mm. Debido a que la longitud de la concha puede superar los 135 mm en aguas profundas, es necesario considerar las poblaciones intermareal e inframareal de manera separada. Occurrence and toxic profiles of paralytic shellfish toxins (PST) in the chocolata clam Megapitaria squalida were investigated. From December 2001 to December 2002, 25 clams were obtained monthly from Bahía de La Paz, Gulf of California. Additionally, net (20 µm) and bottle phytoplankton samples were also collected to identify toxic species. Toxins were analyzed by HPLC with post-column oxidation and fluorescence detection. Toxicity in the clam was low and varied from 0.14 to 5.46 µg/STXeq/100 g. Toxicity was detected in December, March, April, June, and August. Toxin profile was composed mainly by STX, GTX2, GTX3, dcGTX2, dcGTX3, C2, dcSTX and B1. Gymnodinium catenatum was the only PST-producing dinoflagellate identified in the phytoplankton samples throughout the study period. G. catenatum was observed mainly in net samples from December 2001 to December 2002; however, in bottle samples, G. catenatum was only observed in five months. Highest abundance (2 600 cells l-1 ) was observed in March and the lowest (160 cells l-1 ) in June. G. catenatum mainly formed two-cell chains and rarely four or eight. The presence of PST in net phytoplankton samples support the fact that G. catenatum is the main source of PST in the clams. This study represents the first report of PST toxins in the chocolata clam from Bahía de La PazSe investigó la ocurrencia así como los perfiles de toxinas paralíticas (PST) en la almeja chocolata Megapitaria squalida (Sowerby, 1835), de la cual se recolectaron mensualmente 25 ejemplares de diciembre del 2001 a diciembre del 2000 en La Bahía de La Paz, Golfo de California. Simultáneamente, se obtuvieron muestras de fitoplancton de botella y de red (20 µM) para identificar especies tóxicas, así como para detectar la presencia de toxinas paralíticas. Las toxinas se analizaron por HPLC con una oxidación post-columna y detección fluorescente. La toxicidad en las almejas fue baja y varió de 0.14 a 5.46 µg/STXeq/100 g y se detectó en diciembre, marzo, abril, junio y agosto. El perfil de toxinas estuvo compuesto principalmente por STX, GTX2, GTX3, dcGTX2, dcGTX3, C2, dcSTX y B1, siendo similar al perfil observado en las muestras de red. Gymnodinium catenatum fue la única especie productora de toxinas paralíticas identificada en las muestras de fitoplancton a través de todo el período del estudio. G. catenatum se observó principalmente en muestras de red correspondientes a diciembre 2001-diciembre 2002; sin embargo, en muestras de botella, G. Catenatum solo fue observado en cinco meses. La abundancia más alta (2 600 céls l-1 ) se encontró en marzo y la más baja (160 céls l-1 ) en junio. G. catenatum se presentó formando cadenas de dos células y raramente de cuatro u ocho. La presencia de toxinas en las muestras de red donde esta especie es frecuente, apoya la idea de que G. catenatum sea la fuente principal de PST en las almejas. Para determinar el crecimiento de la almeja chocolataMegapitaria squalida en Bahía Concepción, Baja California Sur, México, entre abril de 1988 y octubre de 1989 se realizaron diez campañas bimestrales de observaci6n y recolecta de individuos. Se marcaron y midieron 137 individuos en las localidades de Punta Arenas y El Remate. Se estimaron los incrementos en longitud para calcular los parámetros de la ecuaci6n de crecimiento de von Bertalanffy, encontrando diferencias significativas en el crecimiento en las dos localidades (P. Arenas, k=O.152, Loo=86.2; El Remate, k = 0.551, Loo= 80.9). En las valvas se analizaron marcas translúcidas visibles a simple vista, que aparentemente se forman anualmente, y marcas visibles solo al microscopio y con un pulido previo, que pueden formarse diariamente y muestran que el crecimiento varia estacionalmente.
